Abstract:Two new species of Hesionidae, Parahesione pulvinata sp. nov. and Parahesione apiculata sp. nov. are described based on materials collected at tidal flats in Okinawa (Japan) from burrows of the ghost shrimps Neocallichirus jousseaumei and Glypturus armatus. The two new species are characterized by having eight enlarged cirri, dorsal cirrophores with dorsal foliose lobe and biramous parapodia, and by lacking median antenna. Parahesione apiculata sp. nov. has digitate lobes on the posterior margin of the dorsal foliose lobe (absent in P. pulvinata sp. nov.). The two new species were never found outside the ghost shrimp burrows, suggesting they are obligate symbionts. Phylogenetic analyses based on four concatenated genes suggest that the symbiotic lifestyle has evolved several times in Hesionidae.

Abstract:The present paper describes two new genera and species of the parasitic copepod family Chondracanthidae Milne Edwards, 1840 based on specimens collected from two species of deep-sea fishes at a depth of 212 m off Suruga Bay, Japan. Avatar nishidai gen. et sp. nov. is described from the host fish Chaunax abei Le Danois, 1978 (Chaunacidae). Kokeshioides surugaensis gen. et sp. nov. is described from the host fish Setarches longimanus (Alcock, 1894) (Setarchidae).

Abstract:Marine microturbellarians are an assemblage of meiofaunal flatworms abundant in sediments and on seaweeds around the world. The diversity and distribution of these animals in Japan are poorly understood. Here, we provide an overview of all recorded species in Japan and characterize two new species of the rhabdocoel genus Reinhardorhynchus based on morphological features and a molecular phylogeny inferred from 18S and 28S rDNA sequences. Reinhardorhynchus ryukyuensis sp. nov. can be distinguished from other species in the genus by the lack of an armed cirrus and by the presence of two larger opposing hooks and five smaller interconnected hooks in its male copulatory organ. Reinhardorhynchus sagamianus sp. nov. differs from its congeners because its male copulatory organ combines a bipartite cirrus armed with a belt of overlapping scale-like spines, an unarmed accessory cirrus, and two large distal accessory hooks. Our molecular phylogenetic analyses show that R. ryukyuensis sp. nov. and R. sagamianus sp. nov. form a clade with all the other species of Reinhardorhynchus for which DNA sequence data are available. Within this clade, R. sagamianus sp. nov. is in a clade that also includes R. riegeri and R. anamariae . The discovery of these new species highlights the importance of uncovering and documenting the hidden biodiversity along Japan’s coastal margin.

Abstract:We describe here a new species of Amphictene (Annelida, Polychaeta, Pectinariidae) from a depth of 1160 m off Kushiro, East Hokkaido, Japan. Amphictene hokkaido sp. nov. is characterized by the presence of following characters: a pair of ventral lappets in segment 1; ventro-median lobes in segments 2–4; anterior conical or rounded lappets on ventro-lateral lobe of segment 2; dorso-lateral pads in segments 3 and 4; 17 segments with chaetae on notopodia, 13 segments with uncini on neuropodia; notopodia in segment 21 with notopodial lappets beneath chaetal tuft; neuropodial uncini with 4–5 main teeth and subrostral process on basal prow; 7–9 pairs of scaphal hooks; scaphe with anterior median lobe and four pairs of lateral lobes; anal lobe with an anal cirrus and a row of postero-ventral minute cirri. We provide a diagnostic key to species of the genus.

Abstract:Schizorhynchia is a group of free-living interstitial flatworms within Kalyptorhynchia, characterized by possessing a split proboscis. To date, only seven species of Schizorhynchia have been recorded from Japan. Here, we describe two new species of schizorhynchs, Proschizorhynchella quadricaudata sp. nov. and Cheliplana izuensis sp. nov., based on specimens collected from the intertidal zone of Japanese waters. We also explored the phylogenetic position of the new taxa based on partial sequences of the nuclear 18S rRNA and 28S rRNA genes. Proschizorhynchella quadricaudata sp. nov. is characterized by (i) proboscis lips with a row of glands; (ii) a simple cone-shaped stylet; and (iii) a caudal end with four finger-shaped projections. Cheliplana izuensis sp. nov. can be distinguished from its congeners by (i) two strong hooks with bifurcate tips, encircling the distal part of the spiny cirrus; (ii) the fact that the proximal 20% of the cirrus length is unarmed; (iii) proboscis' sidepieces lacking needles; (iv) paired seminal vesicles; and (v) the presence of a vagina. The phylogenetic analyses support the position of P. quadricaudata sp. nov. within Schizorhynchidae and the position of C. izuensis sp. nov. in a clade containing all species of Cheliplana within Cheliplanidae.

Abstract:Acoetid polychaetes were collected from shallow waters off Kochi Prefecture and Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. The specimens could be assigned to the genus Polyodontes Blainville, 1828, but are different from all the known species of the genus by the following characters: ommatophores with short neck; palps with minute papillae; parapodia without branchiae; the acicular neurochaetae always lacking aristae and having hairs only on a small area of their subdistal end; and antennae with brown dots. They are herein morphologically described as a new species and a partial 658-bp COI sequence as a DNA barcode is provided for future taxonomic studies.

Abstract:We describe Pericelis nivea sp. nov. from sunken wood collected 330 m deep, off the coast of Owase, Japan. This is the first record of Pericelis from the bathyal zone. Unlike other congeners, P. nivea sp. nov. is characterized by the absence of eyespots. We provide a partial sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene as a DNA barcode for the new species. Phylogenetic analyses based on concatenated sequences of nuclear 18S and 28S ribosomal DNA showed that P. nivea sp. nov. was nested in the clade of Pericelis with high support; however, the relationship between P. nivea sp. nov. and other Pericelis species was unclear.

Abstract:A new species of podocerid amphipod, Podocerus jinbe, is named and described. This new species was collected from the gill rakers of the whale shark Rhincodon typus Smith, 1828 from off Yomitan Village, Okinawa Island, Japan. This is the first record of an amphipod associated with the whale shark. Podocerus jinbe sp. nov. is morphologically similar to P. zeylanicus (Walker, 1904), but differs from the latter by its larger body size, shorter peduncular article 1 of antenna 1, longer flagellar article 1 of antenna 1, subrectangular propodus of male gnathopod 1, anteriorly concave basis of male gnathopod 2, narrow merus of female gnathopod 2, greater number of robust setae on rami of uropods 1 and 2, and greater number of long robust setae on the telson apical lobe. Additionally, a partial DNA sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) of this species was determined for future studies.
Two New Species of Microloxoconcha (Crustacea: Ostracoda) from the Sublittoral Zone in Western Japan

Abstract:In the present study, we describe two new marine species, Microloxoconcha toyoshioae n. sp. and M. sublittoralis n. sp., collected from the sandy bottom in the western part of Japan, from the depths of approximately 20 to 30 m and 50 m, respectively. This represents the first record of this genus from such depths, since all 10 previously described species are known from the beach interstitial waters. We suspect the two new species are most probably also inhabiting spaces between sand grains since they have very small body and have been collected with other common interstitial ostracods belonging to Cobanocythere Hartmann, 1959; Parvocythere Hartmann, 1959; Paracobanocythere Gottwald, 1983; Parapolycope Klie, 1936; and Psammocythere Klie, 1936. Owing to their small body and fragile carapace, previous studies might have overlooked the existence of interstitial ostracods from habitats other than beach interstitial. In addition, a key to all species of the genus Microloxoconcha is provided.

Abstract:A new genus and species of copepod, Mihbaicolasakamakii n. g., n. sp., belonging to the siphonostomatoid family Hatschekiidae, is described based on the females collected from inside the tissue of the branchiostegal membrane in three species of the groupers, Epinephelusfasciatus (Forsskål) (type-host), E.merra Bloch and Cephalopholis leopardus (Lacépède), collected off Okinawa-jima Island and Iriomote-jima Island, Ryukyu Archipelago, North Pacific Ocean. The new genus can be distinguished from other hatschekiid genera by a combination of the following characters in the female: the head is composed of the cephalosome and the pedigerous somite; the cephalothorax is expanded into a pair of posteroventral lobes carrying leg 1; legs 1 and 2 are biramous and composed of the protopod and both rami are 2-segmented; leg 3 is absent; and leg 4 is represented by a rounded lobe with a chitinous pointed apical process.

Abstract:Three new species of ascothoracidan crustaceans, Dendrogaster danni sp. nov., Dendrogaster tanabensis sp. nov., and Dendrogaster jinshomaruae sp. nov. are described from the sea around the Kii Peninsula on the Pacific coast of central Japan. They are found in the coelomic cavities of the sea stars, Neoferdina japonica Oguro & Misaki, 1986., Henricia sp., and Coronaster volsellatus (Sladen, 1889), respectively. Morphological examinations and DNA barcoding analyses of these new species are reported in this study. The emergence of Dendrogaster from their host sea stars is also noted. These findings represent the 11th to 13th species of Dendrogaster that infest Japanese sea stars.

Abstract:Five species of sea stars of the families Ophidiasteridae and Goniasteridae including two new species, Bathyferdina caelator sp. nov. and Fromia labeosa sp. nov., were collected by dredging from the mesophotic zone of the Ogasawara Islands, Japan. Bathyferdina caelator is distinguished from B. aireyae Mah, 2017 by the presence of glassy bosses (crystal bodies) on actinal and adambulacral plates and the absence of them on marginal plates. Fromia labeosa has large, elliptical pedicellariae on the actinal plate and is further distinguished from its congeners based on characters of the abactinal and superomarginal plates, granules, actinal papulae, furrow spines, and the subambulacral spines. We also provide descriptions for three mesophotic species, Fromia eusticha Fisher, 1913, Ogmaster capella (Müller and Troschel, 1842), and Tamaria tenella (Fisher, 1906), which are poorly studied in Japanese waters.

Abstract:The familial affiliation of the so-far-monotypic palaeacanthocephalan genus Pseudocavisoma Golvan & Houin, 1964 has solely been based on morphological characteristics, lacking nucleotide sequence data. In this paper, we assess the phylogenetic position of the genus with a dataset consisting of partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, and the nuclear 18S and 28S rRNA genes for 37 species of palaeacanthocephalans available in public databases along with the ones determined from the new species Pseudocavisoma setoense sp. nov. , herein established with specimens collected from the intestine of the pearl-spot chromis Chromis notata (Temminck & Schlegel, 1843) obtained in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. Our results suggested that Pseudocavisoma should be placed in Micracanthorhynchinidae Yamaguti, 1963, rather than in Cavisomatidae Meyer, 1932 as had been considered by previous authors. Because Micracanthorhynchinidae has been regarded synonymous with Rhadinorhynchidae Lühe, 1912 since 1985, we re-validate the former taxon while providing an amended diagnosis for it. Pseudocavisoma setoense sp. nov. can be distinguished from the sole congener Pseudocavisoma chromitidis (Cable & Quick, 1954) by the distributional pattern and the size of spines on the trunk. We provide a partial morphological redescription of the latter species based on syntypes of Cavisoma chromitidis Cable & Quick, 1954. We also provide an amended diagnosis for Pseudocavisoma to accommodate P. setoense sp. nov.

Abstract:Polychaetes are typically found in marine environments with limited species adapting to semi-terrestrial habitats. The genus Stygocapitella comprises interstitial polychaetes dwelling in sandy beach areas around or above the high-water line. Based on molecular data, previous studies suggested the presence of multiple cryptic species in some different localities in the world lumped together as Stygocapitella subterranea . In Japan, reports on Stygocapitella were scarce, with only one species having been documented 40 years ago at Ishikari Beach in Hokkaido by the name of S. subterranea . We revisited these earlier findings and uncovered the presence of two distinct species in Stygocapitella . One of these species is herein named Stygocapitella itoi sp. nov., while the other corresponds to S. budaevae , originally described from the Russian Far East. Stygocapitella itoi sp. nov. possesses a chaetal pattern similar to that of S. australis , S. furcata and S. pacifica but can be distinguished from the congeners by two characters: a slightly forked pygidium and forked chaetae consisting of two teeth and two outer prongs. Our multi-locus phylogenetic analysis showed close relationships across the Pacific Ocean in two separated lineages in the genus, suggesting ancient dispersal or allopatric speciation after vicariance events.

The Vetigastropoda (Mollusca) of Walters Shoal, with descriptions of two new genera and thirty new species

Abstract:The vetigastropod material collected on Walters Shoal during Cruise MD208 of the Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos programme is documented. In total, 50 species were obtained, 30 of which are new and apparently endemic to the seamount. Of the other 20 species, eight are regionally endemic to the south-western Indian Ocean, 11 are more widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific and one is possibly of deep-water Atlantic origin. The primary affinities of the fauna are with warm temperate South Africa and the tropical western Indian Ocean, but one species is potentially a seamount endemic of southern affinity. A new pseudococculinid genus living on decomposing bird feathers is described, a biogenic substrate association previously unknown in the Mollusca. The following new genera are described: Imbricoscelis gen. nov. and Pterodacna gen. nov. The following new synonyms are proposed: Carinastele wareni Vilvens, 2014 is a synonym of Bruceina cognata (Marshall, 1988); Fluxinella stellaris Bozzetti, 2008 is a synonym of Agagus stellamaris Herbert, 1991.

Abstract:The genera Parahelice K. Sakai, Türkay & Yang, 2006, and Pseudohelice K. Sakai, Türkay & Yang, 2006, are widely distributed in estuarine, mudflats, or mangroves in the Indo-West Pacific, and species of them are often sympatric. Species identification of the two genera is generally difficult, mainly due to the similar morphology and large intraspecific variation. Our study is the first report of the two genera from Vanuatu, including one new species, Parahelice ngankeeae sp. nov., as well as Par. pilimana (A. Milne-Edwards, 1873) and Pseudohelice subquadrata (Dana, 1851). These species can be distinguished from similar species by the characters of the suborbital cristae, the male chelipedal manus, and the first gonopods. The new species is also supported by the molecular results from the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI).

Abstract:Two new species of the axiid shrimp genus Eiconaxius Bate, 1888, are described from seamounts in the Nishi-Shichito Ridge, northwestern Pacific off Japan, during recent cruises of R/V Kaimei of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, exploring the marine protected area (MPA). Eiconaxius latirostrum sp. nov. is described on the basis of three specimens from Shoho Seamount at depths of 402–456 m; and E. kaimei sp. nov. is described on the basis of a single ovigerous female from An'ei Seamount at a depth of 888 m. The status of the two new taxa was assessed by phylogenetic analyses employing two mitochondrial markers (16S rRNA and COI genes) and morphological comparison. Specimens of the two new species lived in colonies of unidentified farreid sponges. This study contributes to documenting the benthic invertebrate fauna of the Japanese MPA as a baseline data for conservation.

Abstract:Cymothoidae are parasitic isopods that infest fishes inhabiting marine, brackish, and fresh-water environments. The systematics, distribution, and host specificity of cymothoids is often unknown. In this study, morphological observations and molecular analysis using the COI and 16S rRNA genes were conducted on a juvenile individual of Cymothoa indica infesting the wide-banded hardyhead silverside, Atherinomorus lacunosus, and an ovigerous female of Mothocya collettei infesting the hound needlefish, Tylosurus crocodilus, both collected from Okinawa Island, Japan. This is the first time that these two species of cymothoid have been collected in the Ryukyu Islands, and the juvenile C. indica in particular represents a new northern range limit for its species. That specimen was identified using molecular analysis and showed almost identical morphology to previously reported juveniles, but it differed in the numbers of robust setae on pereopods 6 and 7. The ovigerous female of M. collettei showed a high morphological similarity to M. collettei but had some morphological traits consistent with Mothocya affinis. DNA analysis indicated that these two nominal species of Mothocya are very closely related, and morphological and molecular studies using larger populations of both are needed.

Abstract:Two new species of copepods of the genus Elaphoidella Chappuis, 1929 were discovered in a cave and a spring in northeastern Thailand. The first species, E. phuphamanensis sp. nov., belongs to species-group VII sensu Lang. It is most similar to E. turgisetosa Petkovski, 1980 in the armament of the male third exopod of the fourth swimming leg and the shape and armament of the fifth swimming leg in both sexes. However, it is easily distinguished from other congeners by the segmentation of the first swimming leg, the endopod of the fourth swimming leg, and the armature of the third exopod of swimming legs 2–4 in both sexes. The second species, E. propecabezasi sp. nov., is located in species-group I sensu Lang, where the male does not have a transformed seta on the third exopod of the fourth swimming leg and the female fifth swimming leg has four baseoendopodal robust setae, unequal in length. It is most similar to E. cabezasi Petkovski, 1982 and E. paraaffinis Watiroyram, Sanoamuang and Brancelj, 2017 in having the same armature formula as endopods 1–2 of female swimming legs 1–4. However, the ornamentation of the anal operculum, the shape of the caudal ramus, and the armature of the fifth swimming leg in both sexes distinguish them from each other. A rare gynandromorphic specimen of E. propecabezasi sp. nov. was recorded, and a revised key to Elaphoidella species in Southeast Asia is provided.
