Abstract:We propose an entirely new human hand / robot hand interaction system designed with a focus on high speed. The speed of this system, from input via a high-speed vision system to output by a high-speed multifingered robot hand, exceeds the visual recognition speed of humans. Therefore, the motion of the interaction system cannot be recognized by the human eye. As an application, we created a system called ``Rock-Paper-Scissors robot system with 100% winning rate', based on this interaction system. This system always beats human players in the Rock-Paper-Scissors game due to the high speed of our interaction system.We also discuss the future possibilities of this system.

Abstract:Five species of sea stars of the families Ophidiasteridae and Goniasteridae including two new species, Bathyferdina caelator sp. nov. and Fromia labeosa sp. nov., were collected by dredging from the mesophotic zone of the Ogasawara Islands, Japan. Bathyferdina caelator is distinguished from B. aireyae Mah, 2017 by the presence of glassy bosses (crystal bodies) on actinal and adambulacral plates and the absence of them on marginal plates. Fromia labeosa has large, elliptical pedicellariae on the actinal plate and is further distinguished from its congeners based on characters of the abactinal and superomarginal plates, granules, actinal papulae, furrow spines, and the subambulacral spines. We also provide descriptions for three mesophotic species, Fromia eusticha Fisher, 1913, Ogmaster capella (Müller and Troschel, 1842), and Tamaria tenella (Fisher, 1906), which are poorly studied in Japanese waters.

Abstract:Two new species of the axiid shrimp genus Eiconaxius Bate, 1888, are described from seamounts in the Nishi-Shichito Ridge, northwestern Pacific off Japan, during recent cruises of R/V Kaimei of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, exploring the marine protected area (MPA). Eiconaxius latirostrum sp. nov. is described on the basis of three specimens from Shoho Seamount at depths of 402–456 m; and E. kaimei sp. nov. is described on the basis of a single ovigerous female from An'ei Seamount at a depth of 888 m. The status of the two new taxa was assessed by phylogenetic analyses employing two mitochondrial markers (16S rRNA and COI genes) and morphological comparison. Specimens of the two new species lived in colonies of unidentified farreid sponges. This study contributes to documenting the benthic invertebrate fauna of the Japanese MPA as a baseline data for conservation.

Abstract:Marine microturbellarians are an assemblage of meiofaunal flatworms abundant in sediments and on seaweeds around the world. The diversity and distribution of these animals in Japan are poorly understood. Here, we provide an overview of all recorded species in Japan and characterize two new species of the rhabdocoel genus Reinhardorhynchus based on morphological features and a molecular phylogeny inferred from 18S and 28S rDNA sequences. Reinhardorhynchus ryukyuensis sp. nov. can be distinguished from other species in the genus by the lack of an armed cirrus and by the presence of two larger opposing hooks and five smaller interconnected hooks in its male copulatory organ. Reinhardorhynchus sagamianus sp. nov. differs from its congeners because its male copulatory organ combines a bipartite cirrus armed with a belt of overlapping scale-like spines, an unarmed accessory cirrus, and two large distal accessory hooks. Our molecular phylogenetic analyses show that R. ryukyuensis sp. nov. and R. sagamianus sp. nov. form a clade with all the other species of Reinhardorhynchus for which DNA sequence data are available. Within this clade, R. sagamianus sp. nov. is in a clade that also includes R. riegeri and R. anamariae . The discovery of these new species highlights the importance of uncovering and documenting the hidden biodiversity along Japan’s coastal margin.

Abstract:Shane T. Ahyong and Peter K.L. Ng (2017) Cymonomid crabs are small cryptic deep-water brachyurans occurring worldwide. Six species have been reported from East Asia: one from both Taiwan and Japan (C. andamanicus Alcock, 1905) and five from Japan only (C. curvirostris Sakai, 1965, C. japonicus Balss, 1922, C. sagamiensis Sakai, 1983, C. soela Ahyong and Brown, 2003, C. umitakae Takeda, 1981). Cymonomus curvirostris, C. japonicus, C. sagamiensis and C. umitakae were described from Japanese waters, but C. andamanicus and C. soela have much more distant type localities - the Andaman Sea and southeastern Australia, respectively. We review all previous records of Cymonomus from East Asia, describe two new species, and clarify the status of records of C. andamanicus and C. soela from the region. Records of C. andamanicus and C. soela from East Asia are referable to two new species occurring in both Taiwan and Japan. The identities of C. japonicus and C. sagamiensis are fuxed by neotype selection; C. sagamiensis is made a junior objective synonym of C. umitakae. Six species of Cymonomus are now recorded from Japan, of which two also occur off Taiwan. We also report on cymonomids collected by Taiwanese research vessels in the South China Sea (Dongsha and Macclesfield Bank) of which four species were collected, including C. hakuhoae Takeda and Moosa, 1990, not previously found in Japan or Taiwan. A key to the species of Cymonomus from East Asia and the South China Sea is included.

Abstract:New and rare crab species of the family Pilumnidae, Actumnus ngankeeae sp. nov. and Pilumnus swajayai Ng & Rahayu, 2021, are reported from Japan. Actumnus ngankeeae from the Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands is characterized by the following features: the carapace is transversely ovate and strongly convex longitudinally and transversely; the dorsal surface is uniformly covered with small granules and sparse short setae, with the regions defined by narrow furrows; the anterolateral margin is narrowly crested along its whole length and separated into four convex lobes by three V-shaped notches. Both chelipeds are stout, with short, strongly curved fingers. Its specific affinity to A. obesus Dana, 1852, is briefly discussed. Pilumnus swajayai from the Ryukyu Islands is wholly covered with tomentum; the carapace anterolateral margin is armed with three sharp teeth directed obliquely forwards, the second of which is the largest; the subhepatic tooth is distinct, but smaller than the carapace anterolateral teeth; the hepatic region is armed with a dentiform lobe; both chelipeds are armed with scattered conical granules on the carpi and palms; and the ambulatory legs are armed with some spinules on the dorsal margins of the carpi and propodi. The generic affiliation to Pilumnus is acceded to the original description after discussion on the related genera. The present record of P. swajayai from the Ryukyu Islands is the second since the original description from Indonesian waters.

Abstract:Alpheus euphrosyne De Man, 1897 and A. microrhynchus De Man, 1897, two taxonomically challenging snapping shrimps without extant original type material, are rediagnosed based on recently collected and older museum material and adhering closely to their original descriptions. Two male specimens from Java and Kalimantan are designated as neotypes for A. euphrosyne and A. microrhynchus, respectively. Alpheus tirmiziae Kazmi, 1974 is placed in the synonymy of A. euphrosyne. The distributional range of A. euphrosyne extends from the South China Sea through the Sunda Shelf to the northern Arabian Sea. Alpheus eurydactylus De Man, 1920 is removed from the synonymy of A. euphrosyne and redescribed based on De Man's type material from Java and new material from South-East Asia, Indonesia and northern Australia. Alpheus richardsoni Yaldwyn, 1971, previously often regarded as a subspecies of A. euphrosyne, is confirmed as a valid species morphologically and ecologically distinct from A. euphrosyne. In addition, A. richardsoni is geographically separated from A. euphrosyne, being confined to subtropical and temperate waters of Australia and New Zealand. Alpheus microrhynchus appears to be geographically restricted to South-East Asia, with confirmed records from Thailand, peninsular Malaysia and Borneo, where it occurs in transitional freshwater to brackish water habitats. Alpheus cyanoteles Yeo & Ng, 1996 is currently seen as the only true freshwater snapping shrimp. This unique species is morphologically almost identical with A. microrhynchus and is presently known only from a few localities in southern Thailand, peninsular Malaysia and western Borneo (Sarawak). Three species that were previously confused with A. euphrosyne, A. euphrosyne euphrosyne or A. euphrosyne richardsoni, are described as new to science: A. nomurai sp. nov. from Japan, Korea and Taiwan; A. takla sp. nov. from South-East Asia, Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Australia; and A. mangalis sp. nov. from Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, northern Australia, Taiwan and possibly New Caledonia. Alpheus takla sp. nov. may represent the largest presently known snapping shrimp, with the total body length reaching 90 mm and the length of the major chela reaching 52 mm; this species, locally known as takla, is consumed in some parts of the Philippines. The taxonomic identity of the material from the western and northern Indian Ocean previously reported as A. euphrosyne euphrosyne remains uncertain. Alpheus malabaricus songkla Banner & Banner, 1966 is tentatively elevated to species rank, as Alpheus songkla stat. nov. This taxon remains problematic, mainly because the original type material from Songkhla Lake, Thailand, is composed exclusively of females; its status is discussed based on the reexamination of type specimens and material tentatively identified as A. cf. songkla, which appears to have some affinities with both A. songkla and A. eurydactylus. In addition, taxonomic, biogeographic and/or ecological remarks are provided for five further species, which in the past were compared with A. euphrosyne, A. richardsoni and A. microrhynchus or are morphologically similar to them. These species are: A. paludicola Kemp, 1915 from India; A. nipa Banner & Banner, 1985 from Indonesia; A. bunburius Banner & Banner, 1982 from western Australia; A. pontederiae de Rochebrune, 1883 from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean; and A. firmus Kim & Abele, 1988 from the tropical eastern Pacific. The heterogeneity of the Panamanian and Mexican material currently assigned to A. firmus is discussed in more detail.
Glypturus ferox , a new species of ghost shrimp (Decapoda: Axiidea: Callichiridae) from the Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan

Abstract:The callichirid ghost shrimp genus Glypturus Stimpson, 1866 was represented until now by four extant species world-wide. Only G. armatus A. Milne-Edwards, 1870 is known from the western Pacific. In this study, we describe G. ferox n. sp. based on seven specimens collected from the Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. All specimens of the new species were collected in inner reef lagoons by suction pump. The new species is easily distinguished from all other congeners, including fossil taxa, by having a row of spines on the lower margin of the major cheliped palm. Molecular phylogenetic analysis using the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene suggests that G. ferox n. sp. is sister to G. armatus ; the genetic divergence between the two species is high. An identification key to extant species of Glypturus is provided. A brief overview on Japanese species of Callichiridae is also provided. Glypturus ferox n. sp. is the nineth species of the family known from Japanese waters with certainty.

Abstract:A new genus and species of copepod, Mihbaicolasakamakii n. g., n. sp., belonging to the siphonostomatoid family Hatschekiidae, is described based on the females collected from inside the tissue of the branchiostegal membrane in three species of the groupers, Epinephelusfasciatus (Forsskål) (type-host), E.merra Bloch and Cephalopholis leopardus (Lacépède), collected off Okinawa-jima Island and Iriomote-jima Island, Ryukyu Archipelago, North Pacific Ocean. The new genus can be distinguished from other hatschekiid genera by a combination of the following characters in the female: the head is composed of the cephalosome and the pedigerous somite; the cephalothorax is expanded into a pair of posteroventral lobes carrying leg 1; legs 1 and 2 are biramous and composed of the protopod and both rami are 2-segmented; leg 3 is absent; and leg 4 is represented by a rounded lobe with a chitinous pointed apical process.

Molecular rearrangements of (-)-modhephene and (-)-isocomene to a (-)-triquinane.

Abstract:The preparation and further rearrangement of (-)-modhephene (1) to a (-)-triquinane 5 has been assessed through acid catalysis. The rearrangement involved protonation, 1,2 sigma-bond and methyl shifts, and deprotonation. Monitored experiments by 1H NMR spectroscopy suggested the intermediate (-)-isocomene (3), which was further evidenced when a sample of natural (-)-3 undergoes acid-catalyzed conversion to the (-)-triquinane 5. In addition, deuterated (-)-modhephene (1-d) labeled stereospecifically at the 14beta geminal methyl group at C4 was synthesized, through the corresponding chiral deuterated primary alcohol, in 5 steps, starting from natural (-)-14-hydroxymodhephene (8), and rearranged under acid catalysis to elucidate the stereochemical factors that control the methyl shift at this position. The final deuterium-labeled (-)-triquinane, 5-d, obtained from [14-(2)H1]-1-d was established to have deuterium in the methyl group at C5 by 13C NMR spectroscopy. This stereoselective methyl migration is in accordance with the molecular orbital demand formulated by the quantum chemical calculations performed in the present study.
Two New Species of Microloxoconcha (Crustacea: Ostracoda) from the Sublittoral Zone in Western Japan

Abstract:In the present study, we describe two new marine species, Microloxoconcha toyoshioae n. sp. and M. sublittoralis n. sp., collected from the sandy bottom in the western part of Japan, from the depths of approximately 20 to 30 m and 50 m, respectively. This represents the first record of this genus from such depths, since all 10 previously described species are known from the beach interstitial waters. We suspect the two new species are most probably also inhabiting spaces between sand grains since they have very small body and have been collected with other common interstitial ostracods belonging to Cobanocythere Hartmann, 1959; Parvocythere Hartmann, 1959; Paracobanocythere Gottwald, 1983; Parapolycope Klie, 1936; and Psammocythere Klie, 1936. Owing to their small body and fragile carapace, previous studies might have overlooked the existence of interstitial ostracods from habitats other than beach interstitial. In addition, a key to all species of the genus Microloxoconcha is provided.

Abstract:Specimens of squat lobsters belonging to the family Munididae Ahyong et al., 2010 , representing the genera Garymunida Macpherson & Baba, 2022, Trapezionida Macpherson & Baba, 2022 and Typhlonida Macpherson & Baba, 2022, were collected during several cruises around New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea, Southwest Pacific. The integrative study of these specimens revealed the presence of one new species in Garymunida , five in Trapezionida and one in Typhlonida . We describe and illustrate these new species, providing some new data on the taxonomy of several rare or scarcely studied species of Trapezionida . Molecular data from different markers (mitochondrial and nuclear) was also included, based on data availability, to support the taxonomic status of different species. Finally, a key to species for each genus is also provided.

Abstract:Examination of material from various Japanese localities clarified that the estuarine crab Ptychognathus glaber Stimpson, 1858 is possibly restricted to the Ogasawara Islands, Japan. Specimens from the Ryukyu Islands, thought to represent P. glaber, actually represent P. lipkei N.K. Ng, 2010 instead, previously known only from Cebu, the Philippines. Ptychognathus glaber is redescribed in detail, and differentiating characters between it and P. lipkei are reassessed. Previous literature records of P. glaber are reviewed in the light of our findings. Genetic analysis using partial sequences of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene suggests that P. glaber is genetically closer to P. ishii Sakai, 1939 than to P. lipkei, and thus P. ishii is also compared morphologically with P. glaber.

Abstract:A new species, Chimaera stellata , is described on the basis of a specimen collected from the Okinawa Trough. The new species is most similar to Chimaera owstoni Tanaka 1905, which is redescribed, but can be distinguished from the latter by the following combination of characters: body stocky (vs. body slender); height of head posterior to eye 24.9% of body length (BDL) (vs. 19.5–22.5% BDL); dorsal spine weakly curved (vs. strongly curved); second dorsal-fin base 72.4% BDL (vs. 73.6% BDL or more); pectoral fin teardrop shaped, not elongate, anterior margin 35.3% BDL (vs. 37.1% BDL or more), not reaching pelvic-fin origin when laid backward (vs. pectoral fin sickle-shaped, extending beyond pelvic-fin insertion); anal fin somewhat square, distal margin pale gray (vs. anal fin with rounded distal margin, uniformly blackish); dorsal and ventral caudal fins maximum height 3.8% and 4.8% BDL, respectively (vs. 3.1% BDL or less and 4.0% BDL or less, respectively); body color walnut brown with lighter dot-like spots, ventral surface darkish (vs. body color dark brown with lighter dot-like and elongate spots, ventral surface white). Sequence variations on the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I region of the mitochondrial DNA confirmed the distinction of each species.

Abstract:The monotypic polynoid genus Arctonoella Buzhinskaja, 1967 comprises solely the type species A. sinagawaensis (Izuka, 1912), which was originally described from Tokyo Bay (central Japan), and subsequently recorded from China and the Russian Far East. The six specimens we collected together with the burrowing filter-feeding spoon worm Urechis unicinctus (Drasche, 1880) from three intertidal-flat sites in the Seto Inland Sea represent a new report for the western Japan, and the second for the country. Our morphological observations reveal that the shape of the cephalic peaks in the frontal prostomial margin is variable even within a local population, although this character has been considered as diagnostic for Arctonoella. This genus is closely related with Hesperonoe Chamberlin, 1919, both morphologically and phylogenetically. Hesperonoe urechis Marin and Antokhina, 2020, collected inside a burrow of U. unicinctus in the Russian Far East, is hereby deemed a junior synonym of A. sinagawaensis. This species morphologically resembles Hesperonoe adventor (Skogsberg in Fisher and MacGinitie, 1928), which inhabits spoon worm (Urechis caupo Fisher and MacGinitie, 1928 and Echiurus echiurus alaskanus Fisher, 1946) burrows along the northeastern Pacific coast of America. Therefore, we conclude that the Arctonoella-Hesperonoe species complex requires to be reviewed to determine the proper generic arrangement. Additionally, we revise the available data on the symbiotic fauna living inside the burrows of U. unicinctus and U. caupo.

Abstract:Ptychognathus Stimpson, 1858 is a speciose genus in the family Varunidae, widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific. Although species of Ptychognathus are common in estuaries with low salinity, some species are difficult to be identified correctly because of their small body size and similar morphology. This study describes one new species, Ptychognathus amikee sp. nov., from Vanuatu based on the morphological differences and the genetic data from mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI). Abstract:The vetigastropod material collected on Walters Shoal during Cruise MD208 of the Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos programme is documented. In total, 50 species were obtained, 30 of which are new and apparently endemic to the seamount. Of the other 20 species, eight are regionally endemic to the south-western Indian Ocean, 11 are more widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific and one is possibly of deep-water Atlantic origin. The primary affinities of the fauna are with warm temperate South Africa and the tropical western Indian Ocean, but one species is potentially a seamount endemic of southern affinity. A new pseudococculinid genus living on decomposing bird feathers is described, a biogenic substrate association previously unknown in the Mollusca. The following new species are described: Akritogyra crenulata sp. nov., Bathymophila williamsae sp. nov., Benthobrookula araneum sp. nov., Be. galeneae sp. nov., Be. laticostata sp. nov., Be. scalaroides sp. nov., Be. semisculpta sp. nov., Bruceina areneformis sp. nov., Calliostoma pantopunctatum sp. nov., Cantrainea herosae sp. nov., Carinastele achrosta sp. nov., Cornisepta marshalli sp. nov., Emarginula lentiginosa sp. nov., E. nodulicostata sp. nov., E. retrogyra sp. nov., E. salebrosa sp. nov., Fluxinella dufresneae sp. nov., Gibbula roseosticta sp. nov., Hadroconus scobina sp. nov., Kaiparathina monticola sp. nov., Lissotesta wareni sp. nov., Microcollonia miniata sp. nov., Mikro crassus sp. nov., Parviturbo cicatricosus sp. nov., Phragmomphalina candida sp. nov., Pterodacna boucheti gen. et sp. nov., Solariella asaphea sp. nov., Spinicalliotropis lepidota sp. nov., Stomatella multilirata sp. nov. and Trenchia mcleani sp. nov. The following new combinations are proposed: Brookula coronis Barnard, 1963 is transferred to Imbricoscelis gen. nov., Cantharidus nolfi Poppe, Tagaro & H. Dekker, 2006 is transferred to Kaiparathina Laws, 1941 and Solariella incisura Melvill, 1909 is transferred to Phragmomphalina Herbert & Williams, 2020. The following new synonyms are proposed: Carinastele wareni Vilvens, 2014 is a synonym of Bruceina cognata (Marshall, 1988); Fluxinella stellaris Bozzetti, 2008 is a synonym of Agagus stellamaris Herbert, 1991.
