Abstract:Liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) has been used for the successful fabrication of nanosheets from a large number of van der Waals materials. While this allows to study fundamental changes of material properties' associated with reduced dimensions, it also changes the chemistry of many materials due to a significant increase of the effective surface area, often accompanied with enhanced reactivity and accelerated oxidation. To prevent material decomposition, LPE and processing in inert atmosphere have been developed, which enables the preparation of pristine nanomaterials, and to systematically study compositional changes over time for different storage conditions. Here, we demonstrate the inert exfoliation of the oxidation-sensitive van der Waals crystal, CrTe$_3$. The pristine nanomaterial was purified and size-selected by centrifugation, nanosheet dimensions in the fractions quantified by atomic force microscopy and studied by Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and photo spectroscopic measurements. We find a dependence of the relative intensities of the CrTe$_3$ Raman modes on the propagation direction of the incident light, which prevents a correlation of the Raman spectral profile to the nanosheet dimensions. XPS and EDX reveal that the contribution of surface oxides to the spectra is reduced after exfoliation compared to the bulk material. Further, the decomposition mechanism of the nanosheets was studied by time-dependent extinction measurements after water titration experiments to initially dry solvents, which suggest that water plays a significant role in the material decomposition.

Abstract:2D Cr2S3 prepared by liquid phase exfoliation forms a heterojunction with titanium dioxide for photoelectrochemical water splitting. 2D Cr2S3 is obtained from bulk Cr2S3 by liquid phase stripping in NMP. The results show that 2D Cr2S3 can form an S‐scheme heterojunction with TiO2 giving a PEC water decomposition efficiency of the heterojunction of H2: 124.3 and O2: 62.2 μmol cm−2 h−1. Exfoliation of 2D non‐Van der Waals (non‐vdW) semiconductor nanoplates (NPs) from inorganic analogs presents many challenges ahead for further exploring of their advanced applications on account of the strong bonding energies. In this study, the exfoliation of ultrathin 2D non‐vdW chromium sulfide (2D Cr2S3) by means of a combined facile liquid‐phase exfoliation (LPE) method is successfully demonstrated. The morphology and structure of the 2D Cr2S3 material are systematically examined. Magnetic studies show an obvious temperature‐dependent uncompensated antiferromagnetic behavior of 2D Cr2S3. The material is further loaded on TiO2 nanorod arrays to form an S‐scheme heterojunction. Experimental measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the formed TiO2@Cr2S3 S‐scheme heterojunction facilitates the separation and transmission of photo‐induced electron/hole pairs, resulting in a significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity in the visible region.

Abstract:Two dimensional van der Waals layered CrXTe3 (X = Si, Ge) crystals have attracted great attention recently due to the observation of fascinating long range magnetic order. However, the detailed environmental stability of surface chemical reactivity of CrXTe3 has not been explored yet. Herein, we have studied the ambient air oxidation of exfoliated few-layer CrXTe3 (X = Si, Ge) nanosheets using optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy and Raman spectra. The optical contrast decreases, and surface roughness and thickness increase with exposure time for few-layer CrXTe3. The stability of CrGeTe3 flakes is superior to that of CrSiTe3. CrSiTe3 nanosheets degrade almost immediately after exposure to air, while CrGeTe3 above 11 nm can be air stable for 24 h. Under high power laser excitation or exposure to the air for sufficient time, it is found that amorphous Te and TeO(x )are formed initially and continually converted to TeO2, resulting in the degradation of CrXTe3. Our results shed light on environmental effects on the surface evolution of CrXTe3 and highlight the need for developing suitable protecting strategies in future CrXTe3-based devices.

Abstract:Magnetic two-dimensional (2D) materials are a unique class of quantum materials that can exhibit interesting magnetic phenomena, such as layer-dependent magnetism. The most significant barrier to 2D magnet discovery and study lies in our ability to exfoliate materials down to the monolayer limit. Therefore designing exfoliation methods that produce clean, monolayer sheets is crucial for the growth of 2D material research. In this work, we develop a facile chemical exfoliation method using lithium naphthalenide for obtaining 2D nanosheets of magnetic van der Waals material CrOCl. Using our optimized method, we obtain freestanding monolayers of CrOCl, with the thinnest measured height to date. We also provide magnetic characterization of bulk, intercalated intermediate, and nanosheet pellet CrOCl, showing that exfoliated nanosheets of CrOCl exhibit magnetic order. The results of this study highlight the tunability of the chemical exfoliation method, along with providing a simple method for obtaining 2D CrOCl.

Abstract:Exfoliation of two-dimensional (2D) materials into mono- or few layers is of significance for both fundamental studies and potential applications. In this report, for the first time surface tension components were directly probed and matched to predict solvents with effective liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) capability for 2D materials such as graphene, h-BN, WS2, MoS2, MoSe2, Bi2Se3, TaS2, and SnS2. Exfoliation efficiency is enhanced when the ratios of the surface tension components of the applied solvent is close to that of the 2D material in question. We enlarged the library of low-toxic and common solvents for LPE. Our study provides distinctive insight into LPE and has pioneered a rational strategy for LPE of 2D materials with high yield.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides have been identified and drawn much attention over the last few years for their unique structural and electronic properties. However, their rise begins only after these materials are successfully isolated from their layered assemblies or adhesive substrates into individual monolayers. Mechanical exfoliation and transfer are the most successful techniques to obtain high-quality single- or few-layer nanocrystals from their native multi-layer structures or their substrate for growth, which involves interfacial peeling and intralayer tearing processes that are controlled by material properties, geometry and the kinetics of exfoliation. This procedure is rationalized in this work through theoretical analysis and atomistic simulations. We propose a criterion to assess the feasibility for the exfoliation of two-dimensional sheets from an adhesive substrate without fracturing itself, and explore the effects of material and interface properties, as well as the geometrical, kinetic factors on the peeling behaviors and the torn morphology. This multi-scale approach elucidates the microscopic mechanism of the mechanical processes, offering predictive models and tools for the design of experimental procedures to obtain single- or few-layer two-dimensional materials and structures.

Abstract:An X-ray analysis of exfoliated MoS2, produced by means of microwave-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) from bulk powder in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) or acetonitrile (ACN) + 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solvents, has revealed distinct structural differences between the bulk powder and the microwave-exfoliated samples. Specifically, we performed X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements to identify the elements of our exfoliated sample deposited on a Si substrate by drop-casting, as well as their chemical state and its structural crystalline phase. In the exfoliated sample, the peaks pattern only partially resemble the theoretical Miller indices for MoS2. In contrast, the bulk powder's spectrum shows the characteristic peaks of the 2H polytype of MoS2, but with some broadening. Notable is the retention of partial crystallinity in the post-exfoliation phases, specifically in the normal-to-plane orientation, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of microwave-assisted techniques in producing 2D MoS2 and attaining desirable properties for the material. XPS measurements confirm the success of the exfoliation procedure and that the exfoliated sample retains its original structure. The exfoliation process has been optimized to maintain the structural integrity of MoS2 while enhancing its surface area and electrochemical performance, thereby making it a promising material for advanced electronic and optoelectronic applications ranging from energy storage to sensing devices under ambient conditions.

Abstract:To determine the tolerable upper intake levels of vitamin B(1) and vitamin B(2) in humans, we investigated the effects of excess thiamin or riboflavin administration on body weight gain, food intake, tissue weights, and urinary excretion of B-group vitamins in weaning rats. The weaning rats were freely fed ordinary diet containing 0.0006% thiamin-HCl or the same diet with 0.006%, 0.03%, 0.18% or 1.0% thiamin-HCl for 30 days, or the diet containing 0.0006% riboflavin or the same diet with 0.1%, 0.5 or 1.0% riboflavin for 22 days. Mild diarrhea was seen only in the rats fed with 1.0% thiamin-HCl diet. Excess thiamin-HCl or riboflavin did not affect body weight gains, food intake or tissue weights. The urinary excretions of water-soluble vitamins also did not differ among the diets. These results clearly showed that feeding a diet containing up to 1.0% thiamin-HCl or 1.0% riboflavin did not induce apparent adverse effects, and the no-observed-adverse-effect-levels (NOAELs) for thiamin-HCl and riboflavin in rats might be 1.0% in diet, corresponding to 900 mg/kg body weight/day.

Abstract:While liquid exfoliation is a powerful technique to produce defect-free nanosheets in large quantities, its usefulness is limited by broad nanosheet thickness distributions and low monolayer contents. Here we demonstrate liquid processing techniques, based on iterative centrifugation cascades, which can be designed to achieve either highly efficient nanosheet size-selection and/or monolayer enrichment. The resultant size-selected dispersions were used to establish quantitative metrics to determine monolayer volume fraction, as well as mean nanosheet size and thickness, from standard spectroscopic measurements. Such metrics allowed us to design and optimize centrifugation cascades to enrich liquid exfoliated WS2 dispersions up to monolayer contents of 75%. Monolayer-rich dispersions show relatively bright photoluminescence with narrow line widths (<35 meV) indicating the high quality of the nanosheets. The enriched dispersions display extinction spectra with distinct features, which also allow the direct estimation of monolayer contents.
Liquid-Phase Exfoliation of 3D Metal-Organic Frameworks into Nanosheets

Abstract:Traditionally, the acquisition of 2D materials involved the exfoliation of layered crystals. However, the anisotropic bonding arrangements within 3D crystals indicate they are mechanically reminiscent of 2D counterparts and could also be exfoliated into nanosheets. This report delineates the preparation of 2D nanosheets from six representative 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through liquid-phase exfoliation. Notably, the cleavage planes of exfoliated nanosheets align perpendicular to the direction of the minimum elastic modulus (Emin) within the pristine 3D frameworks. The findings suggest that the in-plane and out-of-plane bonding forces of the exfoliated nanosheets can be correlated with the maximum elastic modulus (Emax) and Emin of the 3D frameworks, respectively. Emax influences the ease of cleaving adjacent layers, while Emin governs the ability to resist cracking of layers. Hence, a combination of large Emax and small Emin indicates an efficient exfoliation process, and vice versa. The ratio of Emax/Emin, denoted as Amax/min, is adopted as a universal index to quantify the ease of mechanical exfoliation for 3D MOFs. This ratio, readily accessible through mechanical experiments and computation, serves as a valuable metric for selecting appropriate exfoliation methods to produce surfactant-free 2D nanosheets from various 3D materials.

Abstract:Weak interlayer van der Waals interactions in bulk crystals facilitate their mechanical exfoliation to monolayer and few-layer two-dimensional (2D) materials, which exhibit striking physical phenomena absent in their bulk form. Here we study a 2D form of a mineral franckeite and show that phase segregation into discrete layers at the sub-nanometre scale facilitates its layered structure and basal cleavage. This behaviour is likely to be common in a wider family of complex crystals and could be exploited for a single-step synthesis of van der Waals heterostructures, as an alternative to stacking of 2D materials. Mechanical exfoliation allowed us to produce crystals down to a single unit cell thickness and rationalise its basal cleavage by atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). We demonstrate p-type electrical conductivity and remarkable electrochemical properties in exfoliated crystals, which shows promise for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Αfter the impressive evolution of graphene and its derivatives, a large number of two dimensional (2D) materials with important optical and electrical properties have been successfully fabricated. Liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) of layered and non‐layered materials has become a widely applied method for the preparation of 2D nanostructures with an extensive variety of applications. However, in most cases organic solvents are used as liquid phase which are often toxic and environmentally unfriendly and lead to low yields. In this work, we present water as a suitable liquid phase and dispersion medium for the exfoliation of layered and non‐layered monoelemental solids from IVA, VA and VIA groups of the periodic table, such as silicon, tin, bismuth and tellurium. The 2D nanostructures, silicene, stanene, bismuthene and tellurene are therefore prepared by a completely sustainable and environmentally friendly method. The prepared Xenes, as they are called, are fully characterized by microscopic and spectroscopic techniques.

Abstract:The device conceptualization and proof-of-concept testing of two-dimensional (2D) materials are performed with their pristine forms that are obtained through the micromechanical cleaving of bulk natural crystals, i.e., the so-called Scotch tape method. However, obtaining large 2D sheets is very difficult and time consuming. We developed a systematic exfoliation technique for producing sub-millimeter-sized (the largest lateral dimension ever reported) pristine 2D sheets with high throughput. It requires the treatment of both the bulk crystal and receiving substrate. Contrary to the conventional Scotch tape technique that involves the repeated folding and unfolding of an adhesive tape, the flake is stamped onto an adhesive tape to preserve the lateral size of the bulk crystal, to improve the surface flatness, and to reduce the amount of residue on the surface of the samples. When applied to graphene, the method produced monolayer and few layer graphene samples that were several hundreds of microns in length. Surprisingly, the biggest monolayer graphene sample of 367 μm in length was easily produced. The technique was also applied to produce pristine MoS2 and phosphorene sheets of about 45 μm and 95 μm in length, respectively.

Abstract:Electrochemical molecular intercalation of layered semiconducting crystals with organic cations followed by ultrasonic exfoliation has proven to be an effective approach to producing a rich family of organic/inorganic hybrid superlattices and high-quality, solution-processable 2D semiconductors. A traditional method for exfoliating 2D crystals relies on the intercalation of inorganic alkali metal cations. The organic cations (e.g., alkyl chain–substituted quaternary ammonium cations) are much larger than their inorganic counterparts, and the bulky molecular structure endows distinct intercalation and exfoliation chemistry, as well as molecular tunability. By using this protocol, many layered 2D crystals (including graphene, black phosphorus and versatile metal chalcogenides) can be electrochemically intercalated with organic quaternary alkylammonium cations. Subsequent solution-phase exfoliation of the intercalated compounds is realized by regular bath sonication for a short period (5–30 min) to produce free-standing, thin 2D nanosheets. It is also possible to graft additional ligands on the nanosheet surface. The thickness of the exfoliated nanosheets can be measured by using atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Modifying the chemical structure and geometrical configuration of alkylammonium cations results in different exfoliation behavior and a family of versatile organic/inorganic hybrid superlattices with tunable physical/chemical properties. The whole protocol takes ~6 h for the successful production of stable, ultrathin 2D nanosheet dispersion in solution and another 11 h for depositing thin films and transferring them onto an arbitrary surface. This protocol does not require expertise beyond basic electrochemistry knowledge and conventional colloidal nanocrystal synthesis and processing.

Abstract:In the realm of materials science and nanotechnology, the pursuit of the scalable preparation of high-quality monolayers of two-dimensional (2D) materials is a significant challenge. Despite the widespread interest sparked by the unique quantum mechanical effects in these materials, achieving scalable and controlled syntheses remains hindered by a lack of suitable techniques. This work presents a facile exfoliation approach that successfully yields bulk-crystal-sized 2D monolayers, approaching 100% under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions. The process was demonstrated by exfoliating MoS2 on Au and Ag substrates. Raman spectroscopy reveals a strong dispersive interaction at the metal/MoS2 interface, inducing a high strain field on the topmost layer of the bulk crystal. This strain field’s inhomogeneous distribution reduces interlayer van der Waals interactions, enhancing the selectivity of monolayer exfoliation. Abstract:Multinary layered 2D nanomaterials can exhibit distinct physicochemical properties and innovative applications as compared to binary 2D nanomaterials due to their unique crystal structures. However, it still remains a challenge for the high-yield preparation of high-quality multinary 2D nanosheets. Here, the high-yield and large-scale production of two quaternary metal thiophosphate nanosheets are reported, i.e., Ni3Cr2P2S9 and Ni3Cr2P2Se9, via the liquid exfoliation of their layered bulk crystals. The exfoliated single-crystalline Ni3Cr2P2S9 nanosheets, with a lateral size ranging from a few hundred nanometers to a few micrometers and thickness of 1.4 +/- 0.2 nm, can be easily used to prepare flexible thin films via a simple vacuum filtration process. As a proof-of-concept application, the fabricated thin film is used as a supercapacitor electrode with good specific capacitance. These high-yield, large-scale, solution-processable quaternary metal thiophosphate nanosheets could also be promising in other applications like biosensors, cancer therapies, and flexible electronics.
