Abstract:The removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater still faces many challenges. This study reports on chitosan-induced synthesis of few-layer MoS2/Fe-doped biochar (Mo-Fe0.5-CS) with dual applications in Cr(VI) removal. Using chitosan as a soft template, the MoS2 in the composite had only about 3 layers with an interlayer spacing greater than that of pure MoS2, while Fe was embedded in the carbon skeleton in the form of 6-coordination with O/N. The Mo-Fe0.5-CS composite showed high affinity for Cr(VI), with rapid adsorption reaching 100% removal within 15 min for a single solution of Cr(VI). It follows the Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity of up to 180 mg/g. Furthermore, the Mo-Fe0.5-CS composite demonstrated catalytic activity for Fenton -like reactions, which allowed for the simultaneous removal of organic pollutants and Cr(VI). In a mixture so-lution of Cr(VI) and Acid Red 73 (AR73), the removal efficiencies using Mo-Fe0.5-CS and H2O2 in 30 min were 99.7% and 96.6%, respectively. The MoS2 acted as a cocatalyst to improve the reduction of Fe(III), and the catalysis of Cr(VI) also contributed to the removal of AR73 to a certain extent. Even at pH 10, the system was effective due to the 1O2 produced in the reaction and the acidic microenvironment constructed by unsaturated S atoms. These findings provide insights into the effective removal and utilization of Cr(VI) in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:A novel magnetic nanoadsorbent was prepared by the covalent binding of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) onto the surface of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles, which was developed using a coprecipitating method. This nanoadsorbent was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), etc. Moreover, the adsorption performance of the nanoadsorbent toward Zn2+ ions was investigated. The results showed that the mean diameter of the magnetic nanoadsorbent was 18 nm and the amount of CMC was about 5%. The nanoadsorbent showed high efficiency for the removal of Zn2+ ions. The adsorption rate was so rapid that the equilibrium was achieved within 2 min. The isotherm adsorption data obeyed the Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 20.4 mg·g−1 and an adsorption equilibrium constant of 0.0314 L·mg−1. The thermodynamic calculations indicated that the adsorption process was exothermic and that the enthalpy change was −5.68 kJ·mol−1.

Abstract:In this study, despite the high adsorption ability, efficient catalytic activity of a chitosan-metal complex has been developed through the chelation of chitosan polymer with bimetals Cu(II) and Fe(III). The removal of C. I. Reactive Black 5 (RB 5) by the chitosan-Cu-Fe complex/H2O2 system was studied in the pH range from 4 to 12. The maximal dye removal rate was achieved at an optimal concentration of Cu and Fe in the chitosan-Cu-Fe matrix, demonstrating the combination of sorptive enrichment and catalytic degradation. The results indicated that TOC removal and discoloration of the dye achieved 89.9% and 96.5% in a short reaction time. The pH sensitivity of the chitosan complex, the effect of the coexisting ions and the adsorption of other anionic dyes were also studied. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were analyzed to study the structure of the chitosan bi-metal complex and a possible mechanism was proposed.

Abstract:Chemical modification of chitosan was successfully carried out using three derivatives namely: 3 hydroxybenzaldehyde, 2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, and 3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde by a condensation reaction. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods were performed for characterization of the chitosan-derived Schiff base adsorbent materials. The efficiency of the prepared adsorbents in removing cobalt and nickel ions from aqueous solution was explored, and experimental data were analyzed using isothermal and kinetic models. The BET surface area of chemically modified chitosan was greatly enhanced 125.83 m2 g-1 with mesoporous characteristics. The maximum uptake was recorded at pH 5-6, while the maximum removal capacity was 243.90 mg g-1 for cobalt ions whereas 166.67 mg g 1 was achieved for nickel ions. The kinetic data were better fitted using pseudo-second-order.
Concentration-dependant selective removal of Cr(III), Pb(II) and Zn(II) from aqueous mixtures using 5-methyl-2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde Schiff base-immobilised SBA-15

Abstract:Abstract5-Methyl-2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde (MTC)-derived Schiff base was immobilised over SBA-15 (TS-SBA-15) via a two-step modification procedure. Initially, (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) was heterogenised over SBA-15 (NH2-SBA-15), and the Schiff base formation was followed by a reaction with MTC in hot methanol. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy showed that the SBA-15, NH2-SBA-15 and TS-SBA-15 materials had mesoscopically ordered, hexagonal symmetry and well-defined morphologies. 29Si magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) spectroscopy revealed a change in the silicon environment during modification. The N2 sorption experiments showed that the material has a large surface area (623 m2 g−1), acceptable pore diameter (6.5 nm) and reasonable pore volume (1.23 cm3 g−1) to accommodate the guest molecules inside the pore channels. Organic functionalisation was determined successfully by Fourier transform infrared and 13C cross-polarisation magic-angle spinning NMR spectroscopy. The optimal condition for the removal of Cr(III), Pb(II) and Zn(II) from water was explored by varying the parameters, such as pH, stirring time, initial concentration and amount of adsorbent. The results suggested that TS-SBA-15 can achieve the adsorption maximum within 6 h at pH 6.5. The adsorbent exhibited moderate-to-good adsorption ability towards the three metal ions under these experimental conditions. The selective adsorption performance of TS-SBA-15 from binary mixture was examined by keeping equal concentrations of metal ions in the mixture. TS-SBA-15 was more selective towards Cr(III) ions from both the binary and ternary mixtures at pH 6.5. The effect of the metal ion concentration over mole adsorption selectivity in the ternary mixture was examined by doubling the concentration of at least one metal ion in the mixture. The result was compared with the ternary mixture containing equal concentrations of metal ions. The reusability test showed that TS-SBA-15 can be recycled for at least six consecutive cycles without losing its adsorption ability.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:In recent years, to create an unpolluted environment and social well-being, considerable focus was placed on minimising heavy metal ions that are harmful, from wastewater. Therefore, a novel hybrid material called COS-SA-SB (chitosan oligosaccharides salicylaldehyde Schiff base) was developed in this study through a condensation reaction between salicylaldehyde and chitosan oligosaccharide. This Schiff base material was investigated for its use in removing heavy metals copper and chromium from water by batch adsorption method. Characterisation of the prepared chitosan oligosaccharide salicylaldehyde Schiff base using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffractogram (XRD) studies revealed that the chitosan oligosaccharide-salicylaldehyde Schiff base has been successfully formed by the new -imine band found at 1647.21 cm −1 in the FTIR spectrum which is indicative of the Schiff base formation by the reaction between –CHO of salicylaldehyde and –NH 2 of COS. Based on batch adsorption isotherm and kinetic investigations for the removal of copper and chromium (Cu(II) and Cr(VI)) ions from aqueous solution, the reaction follows the Freundlich adsorption isotherm with C max (maximum metal ions adsorbed per gram of the adsorbent) value 110 mg/g and also the pseudo-second-order kinetics mechanism. This leads to the conclusion that the adsorption follows a multilayer mechanism utilising all possible surfaces for adsorption by physical mode of interaction. Based on the adsorption data and isotherm results, it can be concluded that the developed chitosan oligosaccharide-salicylaldehyde Schiff base should be an efficient material for the removal of toxic heavy metals copper(II) and chromium(VI) through the adsorption process from aqueous solution.

Abstract:Unlike the removal of chromium (Cr) ions, the efficient treatment of Cr complexes with organic ligands is a challenging issue in wastewater treatment. The generation and accumulation of highly toxic Cr(VI) species should be minimized. In this study, well-dispersed Cu2O and Fe3O4 nanoparticles inlaid in chitosan beads were prepared. This catalyst demonstrated dual functions, i.e., catalytic oxidation of Cr(III)-organic complexes and efficient inhibition of Cr(VI) accumulation in the presence of H2O2. More than 85% of the Cr(III)-organic complexes were removed in a wide pH range and a negligible amount of Cr(VI) remained in solution in the presence of 20 mmol/L H2O2. The synergistic effect of Cu2O, Fe3O4, and the chitosan matrix was the key factor for the ligand disruption and Cr removal. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis were used to determine the underlying mechanism. The results showed that the generated Cu+ species of Cu2O transferred electrons to accelerate the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle during the Fenton reaction, which favored the production of center dot OH radicals. The generated Cr(VI) in the Fenton-like reaction was efficiently adsorbed by chitosan and reduced to Cr(III) by chitosan and Cu2O. The reduced Cr(III) was then incorporated into the surface structure of Fe3O4 and generated a stable complex oxides of Fe and Cr(III). Overall, this paper demonstrated a new method for the treatment of Cr(III)-organic complexes from wastewater.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination has increased over the globe, causing significant environmental issues owing to direct and indirect releases into water bodies. As a result, metal removal from water entities must be addressed soon. Various adsorbents such as MOFs and chitosan have demonstrated promising results in water treatment. The present study prepared a composite material (chitosan-UiO-66-glycidyl methacrylate MOF) by a microwave-assisted method. The structure and morphology of the chitosan-MOF composite were studied using FE-SEM, EDX, XRD, BET, FT-IR, and TGA techniques. In addition, the adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution onto the chitosan-MOF composite was analyzed in a batch study concerning pH, contact time, initial metal ion concentration, and adsorbent dosage. The composite has a large surface area of 867 m 2 /g with a total pore volume of 0.51 cm 3 /g and thermal stability of up to 400 . Following an analysis of the adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics, the Langmuir model showed an excellent fit with the adsorption data ( R 2 = 0.99) and chi-squared ( X 2 = 3.609). The adsorption process was a spontaneous exothermic reaction and the pseudo-second-order rate equation fitted the kinetic profile well. Moreover, the composite is recyclable, retaining 83.45% of its removal effectiveness after 5 consecutive cycles, demonstrating it as a sustainable adsorbent for metal recovery. This study introduces a novel synthesized composite with enhanced recyclability and a higher potential for eliminating pollutants from industrial wastewater.

Adsorption of Platinum(iv) and Palladium(ii) from Aqueous Solution by Thiourea-Modified Chitosan Microspheres.

Abstract:The chitosan microparticles were prepared using the inverse phase emulsion dispersion method and modified with thiourea (TCS). TCS was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, sulfur elemental analysis, specific surface area and pore diameter. The effects of various parameters, such as pH, contact time, initial concentration and temperature, on the adsorption of Pt(IV) and Pd(II) by TCS were investigated. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity was found at pH 2.0 for both Pt(IV) and Pd(II). TCS can selectively adsorb Pt(IV) and Pd(II) from binary mixtures with Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Ca(II), and Mg(II). The adsorption reaction followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics, indicating the main adsorption mechanism of chemical adsorption. The isotherm adsorption equilibrium was well described by Langmuir isotherms with the maximum adsorption capacity of 129.9mg/g for Pt(IV) and 112.4mg/g for Pd(II). The adsorption capacity of both Pt(IV) and Pd(II) decreased with temperature increasing. The negative values of enthalpy (ΔH°) and Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) indicate that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous in nature. The adsorbent was stable without loss of the adsorption capacity up to at least 5 cycles and the desorption efficiencies were above 95% when 0.5M EDTA–0.5M H2SO4 eluent was used. The results also showed that the preconcentration factor for Pt(IV) and Pd(II) was 196 and 172, respectively, and the recovery was found to be more than 97% for both precious metal ions.

Abstract:The Schiff base chelating ligands; (E)-2-(3,3-dimethoxy-2-oxa-7,10-diaza-3-silaundec-10-en-11-yl)phenol (L1), (E)-N-(2-((pyridine-2ylmethylene)amino)ethyl)-3-(trimethoxysilyl)propan-1-amine (L2) and (E)-N-(2-((thiophen-2-ylmethylene)amino)ethyl)-3-(trimethoxysilyl)propan-1-amine (L3) were immobilized on Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and utilized in the extraction of Cr(VI), Cd(II) and Pb(II) metal cations from aqueous solutions. The compounds synthesized, denoted as L1@ Fe 3 O 4 , L2@Fe 3 O 4 , and L3@Fe 3 O 4 , were characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, TEM-SEM, VSM, and BET/BHJ techniques for analysis of functional groups, surface morphology, magnetic properties, and degree of porosity of the adsorbents, respectively. BET/BHJ technique confirmed the mesoporous nature of the compounds as their pore diameters ranged between 15 and 17 nm. The initial optimization conditions of pH, adsorbent dosage, initial metal concentration, and contact time on adsorption were studied using L1@ Fe 3 O 4 . The optimum efficiencies recorded were 68% and 46% for Cr(VI) and Cd(II), respectively, obtained at pH 3, and a metal concentration of 20 ppm while an efficiency of 99% was recorded for Pb(II) cations at pH 7 and a metal concentration of 100 ppm. Compounds L2@Fe 3 O 4 and L3@ Fe 3 O 4 were also used in the extraction of metal cations from aqueous solution and gave efficiencies of 22%, 56%, and 78% for L2@ Fe 3 O 4 and 19%, 90%, and 59% using L3@ Fe 3 O 4 for Cr(VI), Cd(II), and Pb(II), respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities of L1@ Fe 3 O 4 for Cr(VI), Cd(II), and Pb(II) cations were obtained from the Langmuir isotherm as 32.84, 41.77, and 450.45 mg/g, respectively. The experimental data was analyzed using pseudo -first-order, pseudo -second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich kinetic models. Both linear and non-linear forms of kinetic isotherms; Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, and Temkin were utilized to investigate the nature of adsorption on L1@Fe 3 O 4 . The mechanistic studies deduced that the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo -second-order kinetic model better described the adsorption process both yielding high correlation coefficient values ( R 2 > 0.98).

Abstract:By using a one-step hydrothermal process in an acidic environment, an unique Ag-MOF/chitosan composite sponge (Ag-MOF/CSC composite sponge) was effectively created. Chitosan synthesis has been studied for more than half a century, but its Use for adsorption of heavy metals (HM) is presently being researched. As Particularly with regard to adsorbents constructed of metal organic framework, to increase an adsorbent material's adsorption capacity, its composition is commonly changed. Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) adsorption and elimination were examined in this study in relation to the composite Ag-MOF/CSC sponge. Following thorough analysis including measurements of the surface area using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and SEM and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) (BET).The Ag-MOF/CSC composite sponge exhibits an impressive large surface area of 1496.58 square meters per gram, besides having the best capacity for adsorption (qmax) for various ions: 1.80, 1.49 and 1.72 mmol per gram for Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II), respectively. Consider the factors that influence the adsorption characteristics, such as temperature, pH, metal concentration, and adsorbent dosage. The kinetic isotherm and the adsorption isotherm were fitted using the pseudo-second-order equation and the Langmuir equation, respectively. It was shown that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous in accordance with adsorption thermodynamics. With rise in temperature, more metal were absorbed. With good efficiency, no change in chemical composition, and similar XRD and XPS data before and after reuse, the Ag-MOF/CSC composite sponge was repurposed six times. Investigate the mechanism of interaction between the heavy metals and the Ag-MOF/CSC composite sponge. Utilizing Box-Behnken design, the adsorption outcomes were optimized (BBD).

Insights into the Synergistic Removal of Copper(II), Cadmium(II), and Chromium(III) Ions Using Modified Chitosan Based on Schiff Bases- g-poly(acrylonitrile)

Abstract:Chitosan has received broad consideration as an adsorbent for all pollutants because of its low cost and great adsorption potential. However, its shortcomings, including sensitivity to pH, poor thermal stability, and poor mechanical strength, limit its use. The functional groups of chitosan can be modified to enhance its performance by the grafting technique and Schiff base modification. The grafting process used acrylonitrile (Ch-g-PAN) as a monomer and potassium persulfate as an initiator. After that, the modification via preparation of the Schiff base reaction using salicylaldehyde (Ch-g-Sch I) and P-anisaldehyde (Ch-g-Sch II) was carried out. The synthesized copolymers were detailed and characterized through several spectroscopic and microscopic techniques including infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. In addition, Ch-g-Sch I and Ch-g-Sch II were applied in the removal of different metal ions such as Cu2+, Cd2+, and Cr3+. The maximum adsorption capacity of Ch-g-Sch I for Cd2+ was 183.7 mg g-1 in 24 h, while in the case of Ch-g-Sch II, the maximum adsorption capacity for Cd2+ was improved to 322.9 mg g-1 for the same time. Moreover, adsorption thermodynamic analysis displays that the all ion adsorption process was not random and the pseudo-second-order model fitted with experimental results. Finally, Ch-g-Sch I and Ch-g-Sch II were applied as designs for industrial wastewater treatment with significant efficiency.

Abstract:Cross-linked magnetic chitosan–diacetylmonoxime Schiff’s base resin (CSMO) was prepared for adsorption of metal ions. CSMO obtained was investigated by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM), FTIR, 1H NMR, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXRD), magnetic properties and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The adsorption properties of cross-linked magnetic CSMO resin toward Cu2+, Co2+ and Ni2+ ions were evaluated. Various factors affecting the uptake behavior such as contact time, temperature, pH and initial concentration of the metal ions were investigated. The kinetics was evaluated utilizing the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order. The equilibrium data were analyzed using the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Tempkin isotherm models. The adsorption kinetics followed the mechanism of the pseudo-second-order equation for all systems studied, evidencing chemical sorption as the rate-limiting step of adsorption mechanism and not involving a mass transfer in solution. The best interpretation for the equilibrium data was given by Langmuir isotherm, and the maximum adsorption capacities were 95±4, 60±1.5, and 47±1.5mg/g for Cu2+, Co2+ and Ni2+ ions, respectively. Cross-linked magnetic CSMO displayed higher adsorption capacity for Cu2+ in all pH ranges studied. The adsorption capacity of the metal ions decreased with increasing temperature. The metal ion-loaded cross-linked magnetic CSMO were regenerated with an efficiency of greater than 84% using 0.01–0.1M ethylendiamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA).
Efficient removal of chromate from wastewater using a one-pot synthesis of chitosan cross-linked ceria incorporated hydrous copper oxide bio-polymeric composite

Abstract:Remediating hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from contaminated water systems is a significant concern due to its harmful effects on human health, aquatic life, and plants. To tackle this issue, scientists have created a chitosan cross-linked hydrous ceria incorporated cupric oxide bio-polymeric composite (CHCCO) by combining chitosan biopolymer with corresponding metal ions using glutaraldehyde as a cross-linker. The composite was characterized using advanced analytical instruments such as FTIR, p-XRD, SEM, XPS, etc. The synthesized composite (CHCCO) was then tested for its efficiency in removing Cr(VI) from synthetic Cr(VI) aqueous samples. The parameters examined included pH, material dose, contact time, concentration, temperature, and co-existing ions. The experimental data showed that the kinetics and equilibrium data fit well with the pseudo-second-order and the Freundlich isotherm models, respectively. Thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that the investigated surface adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Except for the SO42- ion, no other species imparts adverse influence significantly on the reaction. The CHCCO bio-composite surfaces were refreshed using a dilute NaOH (1.0 M) solution and effectively recycled five times for Cr(VI) adsorption, indicating no significant surface activity deterioration. This study highlights the high effectiveness of CHCCO bio-polymeric composites in Cr(VI) remediation and the potential for this technology as an easy-to-use technique for environmental restoration.
The role of chitosan grafted copolymer/zeolite Schiff base nanofiber in adsorption of copper and zinc cations from aqueous media

Abstract:The objective of this research was to develop and assess chitosan-grafted copolymer/HZSM5 zeolite Schiff base nanofibers for Cu2+ and Zn2+ adsorption from aqueous media. Nanofibers were prepared via electrospinning and characterized using XRD, FTIR, 1H NMR, FESEM, TGA, BET, and XPS. The study evaluated the effect of unmodified HZSM5 and Schiff base functionalization on adsorption capacities. Incorporating 10.0 wt% zeolite Schiff base as the optimum content into the chitosan-grafted copolymer significantly enhanced adsorption, achieving increases of 98.2 % for Zn2+ and 42.2 % for Cu2+. Specifically, Zn2+ adsorption increased from 27.6 to 54.7 mg/g, and Cu2+ from 67.1 to 95.4 mg/g. Factors such as temperature, pH, adsorption time, and initial cation concentration were analyzed. Kinetic studies revealed a double-exponential model, and isotherm analysis indicated a good fit with the Redlich-Peterson model, showing maximum monolayer capacities of 310.1 mg/g for Cu2+ and 97.8 mg/g for Zn2+ (pH 6.0, 240 min, 45 °C). The adsorption thermodynamics indicated a spontaneous and endothermic adsorption. Reusability tests showed minimal capacity loss (4.91 % for Cu2+ and 5.59 % for Zn2+) after five cycles. The nanofiber displayed greater selectivity for Cu2+ over Zn2+ in multi-ion systems and real electroplating wastewater, highlighting its potential for targeted heavy metal removal.

Abstract:Nano-sized iron sulfide (FeS) plays a vital role in heavy metal removal; However, FeS nanoparticles are easily agglomerated, oxidized, and deactivated due to their poor stability. In order to solve these problems, this work synthesized chitosan-coated zirconium–iron sulfide composite (CS@Zr-FeS) by the coprecipitation method using FeS, zirconia sol (ZrO2), and chitosan (CS) as the raw materials and tested it for enhancing the performance of molybdenum(VI) removal. The obtained CS@Zr-FeS exhibited a higher specific surface area (85.43 m2/g) than FeS (47.92 m2/g), with the maximum molybdenum(VI) adsorption capacity of 120.80 mg/g. The adsorption of molybdenum(VI) onto CS@Zr-FeS followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption process was partially inhibited by the competing anions (e.g., PO4 3− and HCO3 −) and humic acids but was not influenced by dissolved oxygen. Moreover, the obtained CS@Zr-FeS had high stability. Spectroscopy analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that hydrogen bonding and surface complexation were the primary mechanisms for molybdenum(VI) removal. These results imply that the CS@Zr-FeS composite exhibits a higher potential for molybdenum(VI) removal from the aquatic solutions than the pristine FeS nanoparticles.

Abstract:In this study, magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles were synthesized simultaneously with mesoporous silica (MCM-41), followed by the attachment of mesoporous titanium dioxide (mTiO 2 ) to obtain Fe 3 O 4 @MCM-41@mTiO 2 . 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) was used as a precursor for the functionalization of thiol over magnetic mesoporous titania-silica is referred to as Fe 3 O 4 @MCM-41@mTiO 2 @SH. Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), zeta potentials analysis, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis were used to characterize the adsorbents. Parameters that influence adsorption, such as pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, adsorbate concentration, and thermodynamics, were examined for the removal of copper ions from aqueous solutions. pH 6.5 was determined to be the optimal condition for the experiments. The Sips isotherm and pseudo-second-order model exhibited the highest degree of fit for both adsorbents Fe 3 O 4 @MCM-41@mTiO 2 and Fe 3 O 4 @MCM-41@mTiO 2 @SH, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of Fe 3 O 4 @MCM-41@mTiO 2 @SH was 30.08 mg/g which was reported higher than another adsorbent, and further investigation was carried out for Fe 3 O 4 @MCM-41@mTiO 2 @SH like, thermodynamic analysis and recyclability. The thermodynamics demonstrated that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic, and the positive ΔS° also increased the disorder or randomness of the system. Fe 3 O 4 @MCM-41@mTiO 2 @SH also has the potential to be recycled up to five times for copper ions, with approximately 70% removal efficiency from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:This study focused on the development of a sustainable and low-cost adsorbent derived from the chitosan-biochar composite for the removal of Zn 2+ from an aqueous solution. Biochar was prepared from cotton stalk residue by pyrolysis at 600 °C for 2 h, modified with FeCl 3, and composed with chitosan in various ratios (1:3, 1:1, 3:1), leading to the formation of an efficient, thermally stable, and rich with functional groups chitosan-biochar composite denoted as CHB-Fe-CS. Functional groups (hydroxyl, carboxyl, and amine) were identified as key contributors to the adsorption mechanism. Langmuir isotherm (R 2 = 0.99) and Pseudo-Second order (R 2 = 0.99) were best fitted models with the experimental results indicating chemisorption-driven monolayer adsorption. The results revealed CHB-Fe-CS (3:1) composite obtained the highest adsorption capacity of 117.50 mg/g for Zn 2+ under optimal conditions viz., 180 min batch time, 500 mg/l metal concentration, 4 g/l adsorbent dosage, 40 °C solution temperature, and 5.0 pH. Regeneration of the used adsorbent was performed using 0.2 mol/l HCl and obtained desorption efficiency of 67.48% and 51.48% after the 4th and 8th cycles. The adsorption mechanisms were dominated by ion exchange, surface complexation, and electrostatic attraction compared to intra-particle diffusion and physisorption. The CHB-Fe-CS demonstrated an economical, environment friendly, and good performing adsorbent for water decontamination.
