Abstract:Epichlorohydrin-modified chitosan-Schiff base composite (CS/24Cl/ECH) prepared via the one-pot reaction as characterized by Fourier transform Infra-Red spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM). Its removal ability of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution was investigated. The adsorption of Pb(II) ions carried out at different initial pH, dose of CS/24-Cl/ECH, contact time and co-existing ions. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) ions was 170 mg/g. Finally, based on the absorption results, the adsorption of Pb(II) ions was fitted by single-layer Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetics model. The absorption mechanism of Pb(II) ions was controlled by chemical coordination Pb(II) ions with the active sites on the surface of CS/24Cl/ECH composite. Also, CS/24Cl/ECH showed excellent recyclable efficiency up to 5 cycle and potential sorbent for other heavy metal ions.

Abstract:The increasing heavy metal pollution caused by industrial wastewater has posed serious environmental concerns, and the removal of heavy metals such as silver becomes an urgent issue to be solved currently. In this research, novel functionalized chitosan beads were prepared by grafting of triethylenetetramine onto chitosan beads. Compared to unmodified chitosan, the triethylenetetramine-modified chitosan (CS-TA) exhibited both higher adsorption capacity and better selectivity for Ag(I) adsorption due to the introduction of amino/amine groups which has a high affinity for Ag(I). The influences of pH, sorbent dose, contact time Ag(I) concentration, and co-existed ions on Ag(I) adsorption were investigated. The adsorption kinetics could be fitted by pseudo-second-order model, whereas the adsorption isotherms could be described by the Langmuir model, indicating that chemisorption is the main mechanism for Ag(I) adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 419.8 mg/g at pH 5.0 and 298 K. The thermodynamic parameters suggest that the Ag(I) adsorption is endothermic and spontaneous. This work demonstrated that CS-TA exhibited superior performance for Ag(I) removal from aqueous solution due to its good hydrophilicity, high adsorption capacity, and fast kinetic rate, thus it could be potentially applied in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this work, new pendant N,N-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde-functionalized chitosan Schiff base composite (CS@MABA) was prepared from the simple and convenient condensation reaction between chitosan (CS) and N,N-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde (MABA) in ethanol-glacial acetic acid (1:1 v/v) and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The as-prepared composite CS@MABA was applied for the removal of Pb(II) ions, due to the presence of imine, hydroxyl and phenyl groups, and the effects of important parameters such as solution pH, contact time and sorbent dosage on the removal percentage and adsorption capacity were investigated and discussed. The optimum conditions were found to be at pH 5, adsorbent dosage of 0.1 g, Pb(II) concentration of 50 mg/L and contact time of 60 min. The maximum Pb(II) removal percentage was found to be 94.28 % with the high adsorption capacity of 165 mg/g. The adsorption capacity of CS@MABA is remain 87 % after 5 adsorption-desorption cycles. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm studies indicated that the Pb(II) removal by CS@MABA follows a pseudo-first order and Langmuir models, respectively. Compared to similar compounds, the synthesized CS@MABA composite has shown a relatively high yield for removing Pb(II) ions. According to these results, the CS@MABA suggested for the sorption of other heavy metals.

Abstract:By using a one-step hydrothermal process in an acidic environment, an unique Ag-MOF/chitosan composite sponge (Ag-MOF/CSC composite sponge) was effectively created. Chitosan synthesis has been studied for more than half a century, but its Use for adsorption of heavy metals (HM) is presently being researched. As Particularly with regard to adsorbents constructed of metal organic framework, to increase an adsorbent material's adsorption capacity, its composition is commonly changed. Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) adsorption and elimination were examined in this study in relation to the composite Ag-MOF/CSC sponge. Following thorough analysis including measurements of the surface area using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and SEM and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) (BET).The Ag-MOF/CSC composite sponge exhibits an impressive large surface area of 1496.58 square meters per gram, besides having the best capacity for adsorption (qmax) for various ions: 1.80, 1.49 and 1.72 mmol per gram for Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II), respectively. Consider the factors that influence the adsorption characteristics, such as temperature, pH, metal concentration, and adsorbent dosage. The kinetic isotherm and the adsorption isotherm were fitted using the pseudo-second-order equation and the Langmuir equation, respectively. It was shown that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous in accordance with adsorption thermodynamics. With rise in temperature, more metal were absorbed. With good efficiency, no change in chemical composition, and similar XRD and XPS data before and after reuse, the Ag-MOF/CSC composite sponge was repurposed six times. Investigate the mechanism of interaction between the heavy metals and the Ag-MOF/CSC composite sponge. Utilizing Box-Behnken design, the adsorption outcomes were optimized (BBD).

Adsorption of Platinum(iv) and Palladium(ii) from Aqueous Solution by Thiourea-Modified Chitosan Microspheres.

Abstract:The chitosan microparticles were prepared using the inverse phase emulsion dispersion method and modified with thiourea (TCS). TCS was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, sulfur elemental analysis, specific surface area and pore diameter. The effects of various parameters, such as pH, contact time, initial concentration and temperature, on the adsorption of Pt(IV) and Pd(II) by TCS were investigated. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity was found at pH 2.0 for both Pt(IV) and Pd(II). TCS can selectively adsorb Pt(IV) and Pd(II) from binary mixtures with Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Ca(II), and Mg(II). The adsorption reaction followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics, indicating the main adsorption mechanism of chemical adsorption. The isotherm adsorption equilibrium was well described by Langmuir isotherms with the maximum adsorption capacity of 129.9mg/g for Pt(IV) and 112.4mg/g for Pd(II). The adsorption capacity of both Pt(IV) and Pd(II) decreased with temperature increasing. The negative values of enthalpy (ΔH°) and Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) indicate that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous in nature. The adsorbent was stable without loss of the adsorption capacity up to at least 5 cycles and the desorption efficiencies were above 95% when 0.5M EDTA–0.5M H2SO4 eluent was used. The results also showed that the preconcentration factor for Pt(IV) and Pd(II) was 196 and 172, respectively, and the recovery was found to be more than 97% for both precious metal ions.
Adsorption Performances and Mechanisms of the Newly Synthesized N,N '-Di (carboxymethyl) Dithiocarbamate Chelating Resin Toward Divalent Heavy Metal Ions from Aqueous Media

Abstract:N,N′-di (carboxymethyl) dithiocarbamate chelating resin (PSDC) was synthesized by anchoring the chelating agent of N,N′-di (carboxymethyl) dithiocarbamate to the chloromethylated PS-DVB (Cl-PS-DVB) matrix, as a new adsorbent for removing divalent heavy metal ions from waste-stream. The physicochemical structures of Cl-PS-DVB and PSDC were elaborately characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), elemental analysis (EA), and were further morphologically characterized using BET and BJH methods. The adsorption performances of PSDC towards heavy metals such as Cu(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) were systematically investigated, based upon which the adsorption mechanisms were deeply exploited. For the above target, the classic batch adsorption experiments were conducted to explore the kinetics and isotherms of the removal processes with pH-value, initial concentration, temperature, and contact time as the controlling parameters. The kinetic and isotherm data could be well elucidated with Lagergren-second-order equation and Langmuir model respectively. The strong affinity of PSDC toward these target soft acids could be well demonstrated with the electrostatic attraction and chelating interaction caused by IDA moiety and sulphur which were namely soft bases on the concept of hard and soft acids and bases (HASB). Thermodynamic parameters, involving ΔHo, ΔSo and ΔGo were also calculated from graphical interpretation of the experimental data. The standard heats of adsorption (ΔHo) were found to be endothermic and the entropy change values (ΔSo) were calculated to be positive for the adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) ions onto the tested adsorbents. Negative values of ΔGo indicated that adsorption processes for all tested metal ions onto PSDC were spontaneous.
Insights into the Synergistic Removal of Copper(II), Cadmium(II), and Chromium(III) Ions Using Modified Chitosan Based on Schiff Bases- g-poly(acrylonitrile)

Abstract:Chitosan has received broad consideration as an adsorbent for all pollutants because of its low cost and great adsorption potential. However, its shortcomings, including sensitivity to pH, poor thermal stability, and poor mechanical strength, limit its use. The functional groups of chitosan can be modified to enhance its performance by the grafting technique and Schiff base modification. The grafting process used acrylonitrile (Ch-g-PAN) as a monomer and potassium persulfate as an initiator. After that, the modification via preparation of the Schiff base reaction using salicylaldehyde (Ch-g-Sch I) and P-anisaldehyde (Ch-g-Sch II) was carried out. The synthesized copolymers were detailed and characterized through several spectroscopic and microscopic techniques including infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. In addition, Ch-g-Sch I and Ch-g-Sch II were applied in the removal of different metal ions such as Cu2+, Cd2+, and Cr3+. The maximum adsorption capacity of Ch-g-Sch I for Cd2+ was 183.7 mg g-1 in 24 h, while in the case of Ch-g-Sch II, the maximum adsorption capacity for Cd2+ was improved to 322.9 mg g-1 for the same time. Moreover, adsorption thermodynamic analysis displays that the all ion adsorption process was not random and the pseudo-second-order model fitted with experimental results. Finally, Ch-g-Sch I and Ch-g-Sch II were applied as designs for industrial wastewater treatment with significant efficiency.
Adsorption of Hg(II) from aqueous solution by ethylenediamine-modified magnetic crosslinking chitosan microspheres

Abstract:In this work, we examined the effects of various parameters, such as pH, contact time, initial concentration, and temperature, on the adsorption of Hg(II) by ethylenediamine-modified magnetic crosslinking chitosan microspheres (EMCR). EMCR had the diameter size range of 80–250μm, average pore size of 826nm, BET surface area of 68.6m2/g, and saturated magnetization of 15.4emu/g. The maximum uptake of Hg(II) was recorded at pH 5. At pH 3, Hg(II) could be selectively separated from Cd(II), Pb(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), Ca(II), and Mg(II). Equilibrium data were fitted well with Langmuir isotherms with the maximum adsorption capacity of 2.69mmol/g for Hg(II). Both kinetics and thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption process were obtained. The data indicated that adsorption process was exothermic spontaneous reaction and kinetically proceeded according to pseudo-second-order model. The metal ion-loaded EMCR were regenerated with an efficiency of more than 90% using 0.02–0.1M thiourea.
A novel chitosan-based hydrogel microspheres for efficient heavy metal-ion adsorption

Abstract:Pb (II) and Cu (II) are the most critical metal ion pollutants commonly found in wastewater, and prolonged exposure to these metal ions can pose serious risks to human health. Therefore, the removal of these pollutants from wastewater is of particular importance. In this study, soy hull nanocellulose/sodium alginate/chitosan (SHNC/SA/CS) hydrogel microspheres were prepared using the ion crosslinking method, and they were used to adsorb Pb (II) and Cu (II) present in wastewater. The SHNC/SA/CS hydrogel microspheres exhibited excellent toughness (18.67 MPa) and hydrophilicity (21.43° ± 0.65°), which improved their reuse rate. Furthermore, hydroxyl, carboxyl and amino groups served as excellent chelating groups and considerably improved the adsorption efficiency of the SHNC/SA/CS hydrogel microspheres. The SHNC/SA/CS hydrogel microspheres exhibited an ultrahigh adsorption rate and an outstanding adsorption capacity for Pb (II) and Cu (II), with an equilibrium adsorption period of 50 min. The equilibrium adsorption capacities for Pb (II) and Cu (II) reached 116.62 and 94.32 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the SHNC/SA/CS hydrogel microspheres maintained a removal rate of up to 80 % for Pb (II) and Cu (II) after 10 adsorption–desorption cycles, demonstrating their potential for reuse. The SHNC/SA/CS hydrogel microspheres demonstrated an adsorption performance superior to that reported for CS-based adsorption materials. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the adsorption mechanisms of SHNC/SA/CS hydrogel microspheres for Pb (II) and Cu (II) included ion exchange, pore filling, complexation and electrostatic attraction. Moreover, a synergistic coordination effect existed between carboxyl and amino groups.

Abstract:The utilization of advanced adsorbents for the removal of heavy metal ion pollution from organic dyes and industrial wastewater has garnered significant research interest. In this study, a novel composite gel consisting of chitosan modified diatomite (DE/CS), sodium alginate (SA), and polyethyleneimine (PEI) (DE/CS-PEI@SA) was synthesized using the ion crosslinking method. The composite gels were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry/thermal gravimetric analysis (DSC/TGA), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller systems (BET). Their adsorption properties and mechanisms towards copper Cu(II) and lead Pb(II) ions were investigated using infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive spectroscopy, (EDS) and Zeta potential analyses. The DE/CS-PEI@SA composite gels exhibited numerous uniform folds on its surface, boasting a specific surface area (18.96 m 2 /g) and a pore size ranging from 1.5 to 80.0 nm, demonstrating robust thermal stability pre- and post- adsorption. Notably, the composite gels demonstrated impressive adsorption capacities for Cu(II) (174.39 mg/g) and Pb(II) (295.04 mg/g), respectively. The incorporation of DE/CS and PEI into the composite gel contributed to a complex pore structure with numerous accessible sites. The adsorption behavior of the composite gel was effectively described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. The primary adsorption mechanism was characterized by single-molecule chemisorption, which encompassed coordination adsorption, ion exchange, and electrostatic attraction. Furthermore, the composite gel demonstrated significant efficiency in adsorption, cost-effectiveness, and ease of separation, making it a promising candidate for wastewater treatment applications.

Synthesis of hyperbranched polyamine dendrimer/chitosan/silica composite for efficient adsorption of Hg(II)

Abstract:The pollution of water system with Hg(II) exerts hazardous effect to ecosystem and public health. Adsorption is considered to be a promising strategy to remove Hg(II) from aqueous solution. Herein, hyperbranched polyamine dendrimer/chitosan/silica composite (SiO2-FP) was synthesized for the adsorption of aqueous Hg(II). The adsorption performance of SiO2-FP was comprehensively determined by considering various influencing factors. SiO2-FP displays good adsorption performance for Hg(II) with the adsorption capacity of 0.79 mmol·g-1, which is higher than the corresponding chitosan functionalized silica (SiO2-CTS) by 46.30 %. The optimal solution pH for the adsorption of Hg(II) is 6. Adsorption kinetic indicates the adsorption for Hg(II) can reach equilibrium at 250 min. Adsorption kinetic process can be well fitted by pseudo-second-order (PSO). Adsorption isotherm reveals the adsorption for Hg(II) can be promoted by increasing initial Hg(II) concentration and adsorption temperature. The adsorption isotherm indicates the adsorption process can be described by Langmuir model and the adsorption is a spontaneous, endothermic and entropy-increased process. SiO2-FP displays excellent adsorption selectivity and can 100 % adsorb Hg(II) with the coexisting of Ni(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), Mn(II), and Co(II). Adsorption mechanism demonstrates -NH-, -NH2, CN, CONH, -OH, and CO participated in the adsorption. SiO2-FP exhibits good regeneration property and the regeneration rate can maintain approximately 90 % after five adsorption-desorption cycles.
Preparation of Iron Oxide Adsorbent Modified by Chitosan Biomaterials and Its Adoption in the Adsorption of Heavy Metals

Abstract:Heavy metals in water leads to many ecological and environmental problems. All kinds of new magnetic adsorbents are used to adsorb the heavy metals in the aqueous solution, which has the advantages of high efficiency, low consumption, simplicity, convenience, and industrialization. Firstly, Fe 3 O 4 is dissolved, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) and anhydrous sodium acetate are added. The dissolved product is placed in the reaction kettle lined with Teflon and reacts at a high temperature to obtain the Fe 3 O 4 magnetic microspheres. The product is dissolved again. After the ultrasonic water bath, 1 mL tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) is added drop by drop to obtain the SiO 2 /Fe 3 O 4 magnetic microspheres by the ultrasonic and water-bath stirring. The magnetic microspheres are dissolved in 10 mL 3% chitosan solution. Chitosan/SiO 2 /Fe 3 O 4 (CSF) magnetic adsorbent is obtained after ultrasonic agitation, and chitosan-biomodified iron oxide adsorbent (EDCSF) is obtained by the ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) modification. After the adsorbent is obtained, the biomaterial is characterized, and its performance of adsorbing heavy metals in water is tested as an adsorbent. In the experiment, the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is used to verify that EDTA successfully modifies the surface of the CSF magnetic adsorbent. Through the morphology analysis and nitrogen adsorption–desorption test, EDTA cross-linked with the amino group of chitosan through carbodiimide can cause a decrease in the related physical indexes of the material. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and hysteresis loop tests show that although the magnetism of CSF and EDCSF decreases, the solid–liquid separation is achieved in a relatively short time under the action of magnets. In the adsorption test, EDCSF shows an ideal adsorption performance for Cu(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) in aqueous solution. With pH = 4.7 and at normal temperature, the maximum saturated adsorption capacity of EDCSF for Cu(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) is 0.696 mmol/g, 0.586 mmol/g, and 0.562 mmol/g, respectively.

Abstract:In order to accelerate the kinetics and improve the utilization of the surface active groups of chitosan (CS) for heavy metal ion removal, sub-micron-sized polystyrene supported chitosan thin-film was synthesized by the electrostatic assembly method. Glutaraldehyde was used as cross-linking agent. Chitosan thin-film was well coated onto the surface of the polystyrene (PS) beads characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). Their adsorption toward Cu(II) ions was investigated as a function of solution pH, degree of cross-linking, equilibrium Cu(II) ions concentration and contact time. The maximum adsorptive capacity of PS-CS was 99.8 mg/g in the adsorption isotherm study. More attractively, the adsorption equilibrium was achieved in 10 min, which showed superior properties among similar adsorbents. Continuous adsorption-desorption cyclic results demonstrated that Cu(II)-loaded PS-CS can be effectively regenerated by a hydrochloric acid solution (HCl), and the regenerated composite beads could be employed for repeated use without significant capacity loss, indicating the good stability of the adsorbents. The XPS analysis confirmed that the adsorption process was due to surface complexes with atoms of chitosan. Generally, PS beads could be employed as a promising host to fabricate efficient composites that originated from chitosan or other bio-sorbents for environmental remediation.
Preparation of Chitosan-Graft-Polyacrylamide Magnetic Composite Microspheres for Enhanced Selective Removal of Mercury Ions from Water

Abstract:A novel magnetic composite microsphere based on polyacrylamide (PAM)-grafted chitosan and silica-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (CS-PAM-MCM) was successfully synthesized by a simple method. The molecular structure, surface morphology, and magnetic characteristics of the composite microsphere were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The prepared CS-PAM-MCM was applied as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of copper(II), lead(II), and mercury(II) ions from aqueous solutions in respective single, binary, and ternary metal systems. Compared with chitosan magnetic composite microsphere (CS-MCM) without modification, CS-PAM-MCM showed improved adsorption capacity for each metal ion and highly selective adsorption for Hg from Pb and Cu. This improvement is attributed to the formation of stronger interactions between Hg and the amide groups of PAM branches for chelating effects. The adsorption isotherms of Hg/Cu and Hg/Pb binary metal systems onto CS-PAM-MCM are both well-described by extended and modified Langmuir models, indicating that the removal of the three aforementioned metal ions may follow a similar adsorption manner; that is, through a homogeneous monolayer chemisorption process. Furthermore, these magnetic adsorbents could be easily regenerated in EDTA aqueous solution and reused virtually without any adsorption capacity loss.
Removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous media using epichlorohydrin crosslinked chitosan Schiff's base@Fe3O4 (ECCSB@Fe3O4)

Abstract:Lead is one of the highly toxic metals reaching the water bodies from industries and discarded domestic wastes. Chitosan and its derivatives can be used to modify magnetic materials to promote the adsorption properties of the magnetic materials for the removal of metal ions. The obtained ECCSB@Fe3O4 was characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM and VSM analysis. The effect of solution pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial metal ion concentration and temperature effect was studied. The results of the batch sorption kinetic experiments were substituted into the pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion models. The R2 and SSE results show that pseudo-second order equation describes the sorption process very well. Adsorption process revealed that the initial uptake of Pb(II) was rapid and equilibrium was achieved within 105 min. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models were applied to represent adsorption isotherm data. The equilibrium data were well fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model by revealing the maximum sorption capacity value 86.20 mg/g of ECCSB@Fe3O4. Different thermodynamic parameters, namely, changes in standard Gibbs energy, enthalpy, and entropy, were also evaluated from the temperature dependence, and the results suggest that the adsorption reaction is spontaneous and endothermic in nature.
Efficient removal of Cu(II) from an aqueous solution using a novel chitosan assisted EDTA-intercalated hydrotalcite-like compound composite: Preparation, characterization, and adsorption mechanism

Abstract:Adsorption is recognized as one of the most promising methods for heavy metal removal from contaminated water. However, the adsorption efficiency often decreases because of easy aggregation and an inevitable certain loss of adsorbents during the adsorption process. Herein, a highly efficient chitosan (CS) assisted ethylenediaminetetraacetate-intercalated Mg-Al hydrotalcite-like compound (EDTA-HTlc) composite absorbent (CS-EDTA-HTlc) was synthesized by using a simple ion-exchange/chemical crosslinking process to remove Cu(II), used as a template heavy metal, from an aqueous solution. Characterization by FESEM, PXRD, FTIR, TG-DTG, BET specific surface area, and pore volume revealed that CS-EDTA-HTlc had a high specific surface area and many different functional groups (such as carboxyl, hydroxyl, and amino) with strong complexing ability. The adsorption capacity of CS-EDTA-HTlc for Cu(II) was investigated by varying experimental conditions such as adsorbent dosage, initial solution pH, adsorption time, initial Cu(II) concentration, and temperature. The adsorption equilibrium was reached within 120 min. The Cu(II) removal efficiency came 98% with the initial Cu(II) concentration of 200 mg·L-1 and the adsorbent dosage of 1.0 g·L-1. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms data of Cu(II) on CS-EDTA-HTlc were well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation and the Freundlich model, respectively. The adsorption was a spontaneous exothermic process, and the possible adsorption mechanisms analyzed by the XPS and PXRD spectra involved the complexation of Cu(II) ions by carboxyl/hydroxyl/amino groups and the isomorphic substitution of Mg(II) in brucite-like layers. The results suggest that CS-EDTA-HTlc has potential applications in natural Cu(II) contaminated wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this current work, the magnetic composite microspheres (MCM), consisting of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) blended chitosan (CS), were prepared successfully by a simple method, co-precipitation of the compounds in alkaline solution. SEM, FTIR and TG techniques have been applied to investigate the structures of the MCM materials. The vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM) measurement illustrated a paramagnetic property as well as a fast magnetic response, which indicated the significant separability of the MCM in the aqueous suspensions. Then, the MCM materials were employed as absorbents for removal of copper(II) (Cu(II)) ions from aqueous solutions. The fundamental adsorption behaviors of MCM were studied also. Experimental results revealed that the CS/PAA-MCM had greater adsorption capacity than CS-MCM, and PAA played an important role for the adsorption of Cu(II) ions. Moreover, the adsorption isotherms were all well described by the Langmuir model, while the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second order equation. Furthermore, the adsorbent could be easily regenerated at lower pH and reused almost without any loss of adsorption capacity. On the contrary, the Cu(II) ions loaded CS-MCM and CS/PAA-MCM were stable enough at pH higher than 4.0, and both exhibited efficient phosphate removal with maximal uptakes around 63.0 and 108.0mgPg−1, respectively.

Abstract:Chitosan bead grafted by third-generation dendrimers (CB-G3) with a diameter of 1.40 mm was synthesized to investigate their performance in recovering Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) ions in aqueous media. The prepared adsorbents were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, elemental analysis, TGA, and SEM, and the effects of pH, contact time, concentration, and temperature were examined. The results showed that the adsorbents were successfully fabricated. The optimum pH value was 5, and the increased generation number contributed to adsorption capacity improvement, indicating that electrostatic interactions between amine groups and metal ions are the governing mechanism of adsorption by the CB-G3. The kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics of Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) adsorption onto the CB-G3 were investigated. The adsorption processes can be described using pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities were 105.62, 88.82, and 97.87 mg·g<sup>-1</sup> for Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) at 30 °C within 210 min, respectively. Electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds are the main mechanisms between metal ions and N atoms. Therefore, the CB-G3 is a promising candidate for Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) adsorption owing to its splendid ability in easy separation, good adsorptivity, and reusability for efficiently adsorbing Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) ions.

Abstract:Novel adsorbents were synthesized by functionalizing chitosan-silica hybrid materials with (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) EDTA ligands. The synthesized adsorbents were found to combine the advantages of both silica gel (high surface area, porosity, rigid structure) and chitosan (surface functionality). The Adsorption potential of hybrid materials was investigated using Co(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) as target metals by varying experimental conditions such as pH, contact time, and initial metal concentration. The kinetic results revealed that the pore diffusion process played a key role in adsorption kinetics, which might be attributed to the porous structure of synthesized adsorbents. The obtained maximum adsorption capacities of the hybrid materials for the metal ions ranged from 0.25 to 0.63 mmol/g under the studied experimental conditions. The adsorbent with the highest chitosan content showed the best adsorption efficiency. Bi-Langmuir and Sips isotherm model fitting to experimental data suggested the surface heterogeneity of the prepared adsorbents. In multimetal solutions, the hybrid adsorbents showed the highest affinity toward Pb(II).

Abstract:Lead (II) is one of the most important metal ion pollutants commonly found in industrial wastewater. It is harmful to the animal kingdom, and prolonged exposure can cause severe health trouble including cancer. Therefore, its removal to a permissible level is necessary for an eco-friendly and sustainable environment. The use of low-cost chitosan-based composite material as an adsorbent can be a promising approach for Pb(II) decontamination. In this study, a novel chitosan/fluorapatite (Cs-Fap) composite has been prepared from chitosan (Cs) and fluorapatite (Fap) for the efficient removal of Pb(II) from water. Exploration of the effect of contact time, solution pH, initial Pb(II) concentration, adsorbent dosage, and the temperature was performed to understand the uptake process. Pb(II) adsorption performance was compared among Cs, Fap, and Cs-Fap composite. Pb(II) adsorption was fast and approached equilibrium in 20 min. Maximum Pb(II) accumulation was achieved at pH 4.0 for an optimum dose of 2g/L. Pb(II) adsorption kinetics data followed a pseudo-second-order (PSO) model, while equilibrium isotherm data was best described by the Langmuir equation nicely. The maximum uptake capacity (mg/g) follows the order: Cs-Fap (60.24) > Fap (48.31) > Cs (43.29) at pH 4.0. The thermodynamic analysis revealed (ΔG < 0, ΔS > 0, and ΔH > 0) that the uptake process was feasible, endothermic, and spontaneous. The proposed mechanism of Pb(II) uptake involved physisorption, ion-exchange, electrostatic attraction, surface complexation, and precipitation. The Cs-Fap composite showed an excellent regeneration capacity up to four subsequent cycles. The results of this study showed that the Cs-Fap composite is promising for Pb(II) uptake, and it can be utilized as an adsorbent for the uptake of other metal ions from real environmental samples.
