Abstract:ABSTRACT: Toxic metals contamination of soil has become a serious problem in recent years. In this study, Chinese cabbage (a relatively high-accumulator of cadmium (Cd)) and cabbage (a relatively low-accumulator of Cd) were cultured in monoculture and in intercropping in the Cd-contaminated soil, to evaluate the effect of intercropping on the alteration of Cd extraction. Both the pot experiments and field experiments indicated that intercropping increased the Cd extraction by Chinese cabbage and decreased the Cd extraction by cabbage. Thus, Cd extraction was advanced while safe production was obtained. Further pot experiment was conducted to investigate the alterations of soil Cd fractions, soil pH, and soil enzyme activities to reveal their possible relationship with Cd extraction between different planting patterns. Results revealed that three individual Chinese cabbages in one intercropping pot played the same effect on alteration of these factors as six individual Chinese cabbages in one monoculture pot. The intercropping increased Cd extraction by Chinese cabbage and decreased Cd extraction by cabbage, probably by influencing mechanisms such as soil enzyme activities (especially the urease activity) in the cultivation system. Effect of intercropping on Cd accumulation is an important issue in cultivation of vegetables in potentially contaminated land.

Abstract:Soil contamination by multimetals is widespread. Hyperaccumulator–crop intercropping has been confirmed to be an effective method for arsenic (As)- or cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil that can achieve soil cleanup and agricultural production. However, the influencing factors and response of hyperaccumulator–crop intercropping to multimetal-contaminated soil are still unclear. In this study, intercropping of the As hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata and maize was conducted on two typical types of multimetal-contaminated soil, namely, Soil A contaminated by As, Cd, and lead (Pb) and Soil B contaminated by As, Cd, and chromium (Cr). Intercropping reduced As, Cd, and Pb in the maize grains by 60 %, 66.7 %, and 20.4 %, respectively. The concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, and Cr in P. vittata increased by 314 %, 300 %, 447.3 %, and 232.6 %, respectively, relative to their concentrations in the monoculture plants. Two soils with different levels of contamination showed that higher heavy metal content might diminish the ability of intercropping to reduce soil heavy metal risk. No notable difference in soil microbial diversity was found between the intercropped and monocultured plants. The composition of microbial communities of intercropping groups were more similar to those of monoculture P. vittata on two different soils (Soils A and B). An imbalance between the amount of As taken up by the plants and the reduction in As in the soil was observed, and this imbalance may be related to watering, As leaching, and heterogeneity of soil As distribution. Reducing the risk resulting from As leaching and enhancing the efficiency of phytoextraction should be emphasized in remediation practices.

Abstract:Intercropping with hyperaccumulators is believed to be an important and efficient way to achieve simultaneous safe agricultural production and phytoremediation of polluted soils. However, some studies have suggested that this technique might facilitate the uptake of heavy metals by crops. To investigate the effects of intercropping on the heavy metal contents of plants and soil, data from 135 global studies were collected and analyzed by meta-analysis. The results showed that intercropping could significantly reduce the contents of heavy metals in the main plants and soils. Plant species was the main factor that affected plant and soil metal contents in the intercropping system, and the heavy metal content could be significantly reduced when members of the Poaceae and Crassulaceae were used as main plants or when legumes were used as intercropped plants. Among all the intercropped plants, the best one for removing heavy metals from the soil was a Crassulaceae hyperaccumulator. These results not only highlight the main factors affecting intercropping systems but also provide reliable reference information for the practice of safe agricultural production coupled with phytoremediation of heavy metal-contaminated farmland.

Abstract:Soil pollution with heavy metals has become a common problem in agricultural ecosystems and poses a threat to food safety and human health. Intercropping is now considered a promising alternative to address this issue. However, our understandings about the influences of intercropping systems on rhizosphere microbiota composition and their association with plant performance are still limited. In this study, rhizobox microcosm experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of cropping regimes (i.e. monoculture and intercropping) on the rhizosphere bacterial microbiota and their linkages with the phytoextraction of cadmium (Cd) by Zhongyouza 19 (Brassica napus L.), Xikou Huazi (Brassica juncea L.) and Sedum alfredii using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Cadmium accumulation in shoots of B. napus and B. juncea grown under intercropping were enhanced by 370% and 27.8% respectively, as compared to monoculture. Soil compartmentation as a major determinant explained 57.6% of the rhizosphere bacterial microbiota variation, whereas plant species and cropping regime accounted for 26.4% of the variation. The overall abundance of the taxa was Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, Verrucomicrobia, and Actinobacteria. Intercropping significantly enriched amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) abundance belonging to Actinobacteria, Bacilli, Deltaproteobacteria while depleting that of Acidobacteria in rhizosphere. Intercropping with S. alfredii influenced more on microbial composition of B. napus rhizosphere. The change in rhizosphere bacterial communities was related to metal availability, soil properties, and plant parameters. The enriched families of Pedosphaeraceae, Ruminococcaceae, Chitinophagaceae, Gemmatimonadaceae, Nitrosomonadaceae, and Parachlamydiaceae were positively correlated with metal concentration in plants. These results indicate that S. alfredii and oilseed rape intercropping could be a promising approach for enhancing the remediation of Cd contaminated soil. Understanding the complex plant-microbe-metal interactions of intercropping system could facilitate the development of remediation strategy for phytoremediation of contaminated soils and sustainable agricultural production.
Biomass, activity and structure of rhizosphere soil microbial community under different metallophytes in a mining site

Abstract:Background and aims Microbial properties are often used to assess the recovery of soil health during phytoremediation. A field survey was conducted to test the effects of different plant metallophytes (excluder and hyperaccumulator) on soil microbial characteristics. Methods Microbial properties in the rhizosphere of four metallophytes ( Sedum alfredii , Rubus hunanensis, Lysimachia christinae and Clinopodium gracile ) growing naturally on highly Cd-, Zn- and Pb-contaminated soils were investigated. Microbial biomass carbon, basal respiration, enzyme activities and phospholipid fatty acids were analyzed to study microbial community function and composition. Results The total microbial biomass, bacterial, actinomycete, fungal, and protozoan PLFAs, basal respiration and enzyme activities in the rhizosphere of metallophytes were significantly higher than in bulk soil. Moreover, the largest increases were found in the rhizosphere of the hyperaccumulator S. alfredii . The microbial community composition in the rhizosphere of S. alfredii was significantly different from the other 3 plants. Redundancy analysis showed that soil physico-chemical properties such as metal concentrations, labile carbon and pH explained most of the variation in microbial community biomass, activity and structure. Conclusions Metallophytes using different strategies to adapt to metal-rich soils induced different effects on soil microbial properties, which were also influenced by physico-chemical characteristics.

Abstract:A field experiment was conducted to assess the effect of crop and planting pattern on levels of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and copper (Cu) in crops grown in soil contaminated by electronic waste. The crops were maize (Zea mays L. var. Shentian-1), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. var. Zhongshu-4), cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. Jingfeng-1), and pakchoi (Brassica chinensis (L.) Makino. var. Youdonger-Hangzhou). The planting patterns were crop monoculture, crop co-planted with a legume, and crop co-planted with another crop. Metal concentrations in the edible parts of the crops varied with types of metals and crops. Pb concentration was higher in leafy vegetables (cabbage and pakchoi) than in maize or tomato, Cd concentration was higher in tomato and pakchoi than in maize or cabbage, and Cu concentration was higher in maize and pakchoi than in tomato or cabbage. Metal concentrations in the edible part were also influenced by planting pattern. Relative to monoculture, co-planting and especially co-planting with Japanese clover tended to decrease Pb accumulation and increase Cd accumulation. According to the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) standard of the National Standard Agency in China, only maize (under all planting patterns) could be safely consumed. Because co-planting tended to increase Cd accumulation even in maize, however, the results suggest that maize monoculture is the optimal crop and planting pattern for this kind of contaminated soil.
Distance-dependent Varieties of Microbial Community Structure and Metabolic Functions in the Rhizosphere of Sedum Alfredii Hance During Phytoextraction of a Cadmium-Contaminated Soil

Abstract:The recovery of microbial community and activities is crucial to the remediation of contaminated soils. Distance-dependent variations of microbial community composition and metabolic characteristics in the rhizospheric soil of hyperaccumulator during phytoextraction are poorly understood. A 12-month phytoextraction experiment with Sedum alfredii in a Cd-contaminated soil was conducted. A pre-stratified rhizobox was used for separating sub-layer rhizospheric (0–2, 2–4, 4–6, 6–8, 8–10 mm from the root mat)/bulk soils. Soil microbial structure and function were analyzed by phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) and MicroResp™ methods. The concentrations of total and specified PLFA biomarkers and the utilization rates for the 14 substrates (organic carbon) in the 0–2-mm sub-layer rhizospheric soil were significantly increased, as well as decreased with the increase in the distance from the root mat. Microbial structure measured by the ratios of different groups of PLFAs such as fungal/bacterial, monounsaturated/saturated, ratios of Gram-positive to Gram-negative (GP/GN) bacterial, and cyclopropyl/monoenoic precursors and 19:0 cyclo/18:1ω7c were significantly changed in the 0–2-mm soil. The PLFA contents and substrate utilization rates were negatively correlated with pH and total, acid-soluble, and reducible fractions of Cd, while positively correlated with labile carbon. The dynamics of microbial community were likely due to root exudates and Cd uptake by S. alfredii. This study revealed the stimulations and gradient changes of rhizosphere microbial community through phytoextraction, as reduced Cd concentration, pH, and increased labile carbons are due to the microbial community responses.

Abstract:Phytoremediation is the use of living green plants for in situ risk reduction and/or removal of contaminants from contaminated soil. Phytoremediation is an energy efficient, aesthically pleasing method of remediating sites with low to moderate levels of contamination. Phytoremediation in the actual application process, there is a longer time to repair, the repair efficiency is not high. Intercropping is the practice of growing two or more crops in proximity. A new approach, intercropping system was introduced to phytoremediation pollutants from contaminated soil. The paper makes a review on current research and development on intereropping system in soil. Hyper accumulator intercropping systems play a role in the following areas: affect the root exudates and the activity of heavy metals on soil. Abstract:The microbial biomass, activity and substrate utilization pattern of seven Chinese paddy soils with different heavy metal concentrations in the vicinity of a Cu–Zn smelter was investigated. Microbial biomass and basal respiration were negatively affected by the elevated metal levels. Two important biological parameters, namely, the microbial biomass-C (Cmic)/organic C (Corg) ratio and metabolic quotient were closely correlated to heavy metal stress. There was a significant decrease in the Cmic/Corg ratio and an increase in the metabolic quotient with increasing metal concentration. Multivariate analysis of sole carbon source utilization pattern demonstrated that heavy metal pollution had a significant impact on microbial community structure and there was a threshold metal concentration for substrate utilization pattern. However, the average well colour development (AWCD) of the carbon sources in Biolog plates did not vary in a consistent manner with the microbial biomass or heavy metal concentration.
Phytoremediation and environmental effects of three Amaranthaceae plants in contaminated soil under intercropping systems

Abstract:Intercropping is a widely used agricultural system; however, the effect of intercropping between accumulator plants on phytoextraction in heavy metal-contaminated soils remains unknown. Here, a field experiment was conducted to investigate the phytoextraction efficiency and related environmental effects of three Amaranthaceae plants ( Amaranthus hypochondriacus , Celosia argentea , and Pfaffia glomerata ) using mono- and intercropping models. In monocropping, the total biomass of A. hypochondriacus was only 51.2 % of that of C. argentea . Compared with monocropping, intercropping reduced the fresh weight per plant of A. hypochondriacus by 53.0 % (intercropping with C. argentea ) and 40.5 % (intercropping with P. glomerata ) but increased the biomass per plant of C. argentea and P. glomerata by 128.2 and 14.2 %, respectively. The Cd uptake of the three plants in the monocropping models showed the following trend: C. argentea > P. glomerata > A. hypochondriacus . Interplanting A. hypochondriacus and C. argentea further increased the phytoextraction efficiency by 361.2 % (compared with A. hypochondriacus monocropping) and 52.0 % (compared with C. argentea monocropping). Soil exchangeable Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, K, and P, soil N-NO 3 − and N-NH 4 + , soil common bacteria and arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) fungi, and soil total organic carbon (TOC) play key roles in Cd and Pb uptake by the three accumulator plants ( p < 0.05). The biomass of common bacteria, Gm + , Gm − bacteria, fungi, AM fungi, and actinomycetes increased with the three accumulators planted in the mono- and intercropping models. Compared with C. argentea monocropping, the biomass of soil microbes in the rhizosphere soil was obviously increased in the intercropping A. hypochondriacus and C. argentea models. These results suggest that interplanting A. hypochondriacus and C. argentea can increase Cd removal efficiency from Cd-contaminated soils, and this model could be recommended to remediate Cd-contaminated soils on a field scale.

Abstract:The study focused on the phytoattenuation effects of monocropping and intercropping of maize (Zea mays) and/or legumes on Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd in weakly alkaline soils. Nine growth stages of monocropping maize were chosen to study the dynamic process of extraction of heavy metals. The total content of heavy metals extracted by the aerial part of monocropped maize increased in a sigmoidal pattern over the effective accumulative temperature. The biggest biomass, highest extraction content, and lowest heavy metals bioaccumulation level occurred at physiological maturity. Among the different planting patterns, including monocropping and intercropping of maize and/or soybean (Glycine max), pea (Pisum sativum), and alfalfa (Medicago sativa), the extraction efficiency of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd varied greatly. Only intercropping of maize and soybean yielded relatively higher extraction efficiency for the four metals with no significant difference in the total biomass. Moreover, the heavy metals concentrations in dry biomass from all the planting patterns in the present study were within China's national legal thresholds for fodder use. Therefore, slightly polluted alkaline soils can be safely used through monocropping and intercropping of maize and/or legumes for a range of purposes. In particular, this study indicated that intercropping improves soil ecosystems polluted by heavy metals compared with monocropping.

Remediation efficacy of Sedum plumbizincicola as affected by intercropping of landscape plants and oxalic acid in urban cadmium contaminated soil

Abstract:PurposeIntercropping is a promising technique for remediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals. Organic acids can increase the availability of heavy metals in soil. Our aim was to assess the effect of oxalic acid as an activator for hyperaccumulator–landscape plant intercropping to efficiently restore contaminated soil with low cost.Materials and methodsThe hyperaccumulator plant (Sedum plumbizincicola) was intercropped with selected landscape plants: Oxalis corniculate (ground cover plant), Calendula officinalis (grass flower plant), and Buxus sinica (shrub). The effects of 11 mmol kg−1 oxalic acid treatment on growth and Cd accumulation capacity of Sedum plumbizincicola–landscape plants intercropping systems were evaluated in a 76-day pot experiment.Results and discussionOxalic acid has increased the availability of Cd in soil. The biomass of Sedum, Oxalis, and Buxus plants was higher in treatment of oxalic acid than without oxalic acid. The biomass, chlorophyll, and catalase contents of Calendula were lower in treatment of oxalic acid than without oxalic acid, which indicated severe stress caused by enhanced availability of Cd. The malondialdehyde contents of Calendula and Buxus were higher in treatment of oxalic acid, which indicates that higher Cd availability has resulted damage of membrane. The free proline contents of Calendula and Buxus were higher in treatment of oxalic acid. The Cd content of Sedum plants was higher in treatment of oxalic acid than lower Cd in landscape plants with no application of oxalic acid.ConclusionsIt is concluded that oxalic acid has a positive effect on remediation efficiency of Sedum plumbizincicola-Oxalis and Sedum plumbizincicola-Buxus intercropping systems. Oxalic acid has enhanced remediation efficiency of hyperaccumulator-landscape plants intercropping which has offered a new, useful and practical technique for remediation of urban soils with low-level Cd contamination.

Abstract:Phytoextraction is a promising method for the decontamination of agricultural soils polluted by heavy metal. Understanding the dynamics of metal availability and the response of soil micro-ecological environment in a long-term and continuous phytoextraction process is of great importance. In this study, two selected soils which were labeled as heavily polluted soil (HPS) and slightly polluted soil (SPS) with different levels of Cd and Mn co-contamination were remediated with hyperaccumulator C. argentea over three consecutive crops. The metal accumulation by C. argentea , dynamics of total and available metal concentration in soil, responses of the rhizosphere microbial communities and enzyme activities were investigated. The highest shoot concentrations of Cd and Mn reached 82.7 ± 3.62 mg/kg in SPS and 24460.0 ± 655.6 in HPS in the first crop, respectively. But shoot Cd and Mn accumulation in C. argentea decreased in the second and third crops. After the three crops, soil Cd and Mn concentrations in the rhizosphere soil of SPS were decreased by 39.7 ± 4.2% and 28.0 ± 4.6% compared to the unplanted control ( p < 0.05). The rhizosphere effects of C. argentea on the available metal concentrations in SPS resulted in significantly higher DGT Cd and Mn concentration in the rhizosphere soil compared to that in the bulk soil. The relative abundances of PGPR Novosphingobium , Niastella , and Noviherbaspirillum increased in the rhizosphere soil, which may play a key role in enhancing phytoextraction. In summary, the repeated phytoextraction with C. argentea can reshape the rhizosphere microbial community and significantly improve the quality of Cd and Mn-contaminated soils.

Abstract:Intercropping of hyperaccumulator and cash crop, as a kind of phytoremediation coupled with agro-production (PCA), is now considered a promising strategy to address the issue of Cd contamination in arable lands. In the present study, hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii intercropped with oilseed rape (Brassic juncea L) in three Cd contaminated fields were conducted to explore the effects of intercropping on growth performance and Cd accumulation in plants coupled with application of plant growth promoting endophyte (PGPE) consortium. The results indicated that shoot biomass was increased by intercropping, PGPE inoculation, and superposition treatment with 2.16-25.5%, 3.79-22.9%, and 22.2-44.0% for S. alfredii and 2.30-14.3%, 16.5-35.1% and 19.3-50.1% for oilseed rape across three sites as compared to monoculture. Intercropping and inoculation increased Cd accumulation by 4.65-17.4% and 7.56-37.0% for oilseed rape as well as 6.51-47.8% and 13.2-32.8% for S. alfredii among three locations, therefore increasing Cd removal efficiency in soil. The combination of intercropping and inoculation effectively increased Cd accumulation by 3.68-46.8% considering only half the amount of oilseed rape and S. alfredii plants under strip intercropping as compared to the sum of two plants under monoculture. While Cd concentrations in seeds of oilseed rape were in the safe range of 0.04-0.18mgkg-1 under intercropping or inoculation. These results revealed that synergistic application of intercropping and inoculation represents a viable approach to enhance the Cd phytoextraction efficiency and proposed an integrated technology pattern and sustainable technical assistance for PCA in slightly and moderately Cd contaminated soils, and also provided universal information for mechanisms between intercropping and PGPE inoculum.
Binding of the Streptococcus gordonii Surface Glycoprotein Hsa to α(2-3) Linked Sialic Acid Residues on Fibronectin

Abstract:The binding of microorganisms to platelets is a critical step in the development of infective endocarditis. In Streptococcus gordonii, this binding is mediated in part by serine-rich repeat proteins, which interact directly with sialic acid residues located on GPIIb receptors in the platelet membrane. In this study, we found that S. gordonii DL1 strain binds to platelets through bridging between sialic acid residue of fibronectin and serine-rich repeat protein (Hsa). Pretreatment of fibronectin with sialidases specific for α(2-3)-linked sialic acids was shown to significantly inhibit binding of the DL1 strain and the binding region(BR) of Hsa protein. Similarly, pre-incubation of bacteria or BR of Hsa with α(2-3)-sialyl-N-acetyllactosamine blocked fibronectin binding in the DL1 strain, but not the M99 strain. Together, these data show that the α(2-3)-sialic acid residues of fibronectin play an important role in the binding of S. gordonii DL1 to fibronectin through interactions with the Hsa receptor. This interaction is thought to play an important role in the development of pathogenic endocarditis, and may represent an important therapeutic target for the treatment of infective endocarditis.
Intercropping of kenaf and soybean affects plant growth, antioxidant capacity, and uptake of cadmium and lead in contaminated mining soil

Abstract:Intercropping is considered a sustainable agricultural practice that can reduce the environmental impacts on agriculture. Our study investigated the morphology, physiology, and cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) uptake of kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.) under intercropping in mining soil. Results showed that mutual intercropping is conducive to the growth and biomass accumulation of kenaf and soybean, compared to their respective monoculture. Intercropping increased the relative chlorophyll index in kenaf, while that in soybean had no significant effect. Furthermore, intercropping increased the antioxidant enzyme activity of kenaf, while that of soybean reduced or had no significant effect. The content of malondialdehyde (MDA) was decreased in both of the species. Compared to their respective monoculture, Cd content was increased in kenaf leaves and reduced in soybean roots. Moreover, intercropping decreased the Pb content in tissues of both the species, except that Pb content of kenaf roots was increased. At the same time, root, leaf, or stem bioconcentration factors also performed the same trend, and TF was less than 1. These results indicated that intercropping can increase the plant growth and decrease the metal content in plant tissues. Present findings could provide support for future research on kenaf and soybean cultivation in contaminated lands. In addition, the present study strengthens our understanding about the effectiveness of intercropping system on heavy metal-contaminated lands for sustainable agricultural production.
Uptake of heavy metals by crops near a mining field: Pathways from roots and leaves

Abstract:Metal uptake and distribution in crops have been demonstrated to be highly variable and depending on the metal of interest and the crop type. However, no consensus is reached regarding the primary factor controlling metal uptake in crops. This study thus comparably investigated Hg, As, Zn, Pb, Cd and Cu uptake and distribution in three crops grown in a watershed near a copper mining field located in Yunnan, Southwestern China. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) were statistically compared for the same metal across different crops. Leafy crops had a stronger propensity to accumulate Hg, As and Zn than fruit crops. The ability of grain crops to accumulate Cd and Cu was much lower than leafy and fruit crops. The three crops all tended not to accumulate Pb in their edible tissues. The DTPA extracted metal concentrations were not statistically correlated with the metal concentrations in crop edible tissues. It is thus not practical to predict metal uptake of Hg, As, Pb and Zn through their available concentrations in soils. The contents of nitrogen and phosphorus, and competing metal ions present in paddy soil decreased the accumulation of Cu and Cd in rice grains. By means of hierarchical cluster analysis, the high accumulation of Zn in the edible tissues of fruit and grain crops was mainly due to dust inputs via phloem transport from leaves. This is why BCF(Zn) was the highest among the six metals for these two crops. For leafy crops, the accumulation of Hg, Cd and Zn in leaves was mainly through soil inputs by roots. Our findings serve as a scientific basis for the selection of crops in areas with high background of heavy metals.
The dynamic response mechanism of crops to manganese uptake and transfer mediated by different intercropping crop attributes

Abstract:Background: An issue of pressing concern is the manganese contamination in farmland soils adjacent to industrial areas. To address this, intercropping hyperaccumulator plants with crops emerges as a sustainable approach to ensuring food security. This study aims to investigate the influence of intercropping Sedum alfredii with maize or soybean on their growth and the dynamics of manganese accumulation through field experiments. Results: The results showed that compared with monoculture, the Sedum alfredii-maize intercropping system exhibited a land equivalent ratio (LER) of 1.89, signifying a 71.13% augmentation in bioaccumulation amount (BCA). Additionally, it led to a significant reduction in manganese content in various organs, ranging from 17.05% to 25.50%. However, the Sedum alfredii-soybean intercropping system demonstrated a LER of 1.94, accompanied by a 66.11% increase in BCA, but did not significantly reduce the manganese content in the roots, stems, and pods of soybeans. Furthermore, manganese accumulation in maize and soybean grains was primarily attributed to the aboveground translocation of manganese. The intercropping effect on blocking manganese absorption of maize during growth and maturity is primarily attributed to the earlier manganese accumulation in intercropped maize by 2.63 to 4.35 days, and a reduction of 21.95% in the maximum manganese accumulation rate. Conclusions: The study found that manganese accumulation dynamics vary significantly depending on the crop family. Intercropping Sedum alfredii with maize enhances land-use efficiency and reduces manganese uptake by crops, making it a promising strategy for remediating manganese-contaminated farmland near industrial areas. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:A graphic method called close-pair-analysis is described for determining the high affinity binding parameters in a complex system. Assumptions are that the nonspecific binding is accurately measured, and that there are two specific binding classes in which the affinities (Ka) are a factor of 5 or greater apart. Using this method and equilibrium dialysis data of delta 5-Adiol and E2 binding in serum, an apparently new binding site class was found. The average Ka for both delta 5-Adiol and E2 was 8 X 10(7) L/M, with the number of binding sites ranging from 20 to 200 nM.

Abstract:<p>Heavy metal pollution is a notable threat to agricultural production. Soil heavy metal pollution can cause potential ecological risk (ERI), and crop heavy metal pollution can cause human health risk (HRI). However, most previous studies partially focused on heavy metal pollution in soil or crop but often neglected the relationship between them. Actually, soil heavy metal can pollute crops to some extent, while not all heavy metal pollution in crops comes from soil. The inner relationship of pollution risk in soil-crop system is worth attention. In this study, we selected Ningbo as the study region and used sample data to assess both soil and crop heavy metal risks, in order to explore the differences between heavy metal contamination risks in soil and crops as well as the relationships between heavy metal contents in soil and crops. Our results showed that Hg was the most polluted heavy metal in soil, which led to the highest ecological risk in Jiangbei (Comprehensive ERI = 567) with the maximum ERI of Hg (430). However, As in crops contributed the most to health risk and caused the highest health risk in Fenghua (HRI = 10) with the largest contribution of 64.5%. Such differences of pollution risk assessment indicated that the contents of the same heavy metal were inconsistent in soil and crops. Our results further showed that the heavy metals in soil had the greatest influence on Zn in crops. Pb and Cr in soil had synergistic effects on the crop absorption of Zn, whereas As, Hg and Cu played antagonistic roles in the crop absorption of Zn. Our study confirms that heavy metals in soil would variously influence heavy metals in crops and the interaction of heavy metals is very important for pollution risk control, which have been largely ignored yet.</p>
