Abstract:In the context of a rising global temperature, biomass burning represents an increasing risk to human health, due to emissions of highly toxic substances such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs). Size-segregated particulate matter (PM) was collected in a region within the sugarcane belt of São Paulo state (Brazil), where biomass burning is still frequent, despite the phasing out of manual harvesting preceded by fire. The median of the total concentration of the 15 PAHs determined was 2.3 ± 1.8 ng m −3 (n = 19), where 63% of this content was in PM 1.0 . Concentrations of OPAHs and NPAHs were about an order of magnitude lower. PM 2.5 collected in the dry season, when most of the fires occur, presented PAHs and OPAHs total concentrations three times higher than in the wet season, showing positive correlations with fire foci number and levoglucosan (a biomass burning marker). These results, added to the fact that biomass burning explained 65% of the data variance (PCA analysis), evidenced the importance of this practice as a source of PAHs and OPAHs to the regional atmosphere. Conversely, NPAHs appeared to be mainly derived from diesel-powered vehicles. The B[ a ]P equivalent concentration was estimated to be 4 times higher in the dry season than in the wet season, and was greatly increased during a local fire event. Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of PM 1.0 organic extracts were assessed using in vitro tests with human liver HepG2 cells. For both types of tests, significant toxicity was only observed for samples collected during the dry season. Persistent DNA damage that may have impaired the DNA repair system was also observed. The results indicated that there was a health risk associated with the air particulate mixture, mainly related to biomass burning, demonstrating the urgent need for better remediation actions to prevent the occurrence of burning events.

Abstract:Increased industrialization and consumption of fossil fuels in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (MRSP), Brazil, have caused a growth of the particulate matter emissions to the atmosphere and an increase in population health problems. Particulate and gaseous phase samples were collected in different short campaigns (2015, 2016, and 2017) near an urban-industrial area. Organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and its derivatives (nitro and oxy-PAH), n-alkanes, hopanes, and pesticides were determined. The Salmonella/microsome test confirmed the mutagenic activity of these samples. Among PAH, benzo(a)pyrene was detected as one of the most abundant compounds. Benzo(a)pyrene equivalent concentrations for PAH and nitro-PAH, and the associated risk of lung cancer, showed values above those recommended in the literature. The profile of n-alkanes confirmed the predominance of anthropogenic sources. Pesticide concentrations and estimated risks, such as the daily inhalation exposure and hazard quotient, suggest that exposure to these compounds in this area may be dangerous to human health.

Abstract:As the primary component of haze, atmospheric inhalable particulate matters (PM10) are highly detri-mental to human health. Biomass combustion is one of China's most pivotal sources to aerosols pollution, inducing non-negligible emissions and uncertain risks. PM10 samples directly from 10 representative biomass fuel combustion sources (2 groups covering the reality widely: straws of rice, wheat, corn, corncob, soybean, peanut, rape, sesame; and branches of pine, peach) were collected using the dilution channel sampler and analyzed for chemical compositions and in vitro cytotoxicity to human lung epithelial cell lines A549. The components of PM10 are dominated by organic carbon (OC), followed by water-soluble ICE and Cl , and rich in metals Fe, Zn, Cr, and Ni. Generally, PM10 emitted from biomass fuel combustions can weaken the antioxidant capacity of cells, and straws emissions, especially rape and peanut straws, show stronger ability to further induce oxidative stress and inflammatory damage than fuelwoods, owing to the key toxic roles of Cr, Ni, and Co. Therefore, reducing the specific source emis-sions of PM10 from crop straw combustions rich in heavy metals could be an effective oriented strategy to improve environmental air quality and control aerosols pollution precisely for protecting public health.(c) 2022 Chinese Society of Particuology and Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. An integrated assessment of the impacts of PM2.5 and black carbon particles on the air quality of a large Brazilian city

Abstract:Abstract Data on airborne fine particle (PM 2.5 ) emissions and concentrations in cities are valuable for traffic and air quality managers, urban planners, health practitioners, researchers, and ultimately for legislators and decision makers. Emissions and ambient concentrations of PM 2.5 and black carbon (BC) were assessed in the city of Curitiba, southern Brazil. The methodology combined a month-long monitoring campaign with both fixed and mobile instruments, development of emission inventories, and dispersion model simulations on different scales. The mean urban background PM 2.5 concentrations during the campaign were 7.3 μg m −3 in Curitiba city center, but three- to fourfold higher (25.3 μg m -3 ) in a residential area on the city’s outskirts, indicating the presence of local sources, possibly linked to biomass combustion. BC concentrations seemed to be more uniformly distributed over the city, with mean urban background concentrations around 2 μg m −3 , half of which due to local traffic emissions. Higher mean BC concentrations (3–5 μg m -3 ) were found along busy roads. The dispersion modeling also showed high PM 2.5 and BC concentrations along the heavily transited ring road. However, the lack of in situ data over these peripheral areas prevented the verification of the model output. The vehicular emission factors for PM 2.5 and BC from the literature were found not to be suitable for Curitiba’s fleet and needed to be adjusted. The integrated approach of this study can be implemented in other cities, as long as an open data policy and a close cooperation among regional, municipal authorities and academia can be achieved.
High risk of respiratory diseases in children in the fire period in Western Amazon

Abstract:Objective: To analyze the toxicological risk of exposure to ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) among schoolchildren.. Methods: Toxicological risk assessment was used to evaluate the risk of exposure to O3 and PM2.5 from biomass burning among schoolchildren aged six to 14 years, residents of Rio Branco, Acre, Southern Amazon, Brazil. We used Monte Carlo simulation to estimate the potential intake dose of both pollutants. Results: During the slash-and-burn periods, O3 and PM2.5 concentrations reached 119.4 µg/m3 and 51.1 µg/m3, respectively. The schoolchildren incorporated medium potential doses regarding exposure to O3 (2.83 μg/kg.day, 95%CI 2.72-2.94). For exposure to PM2.5, we did not find toxicological risk (0.93 μg/kg.day, 95%CI 0.86-0.99). The toxicological risk for exposure to O3 was greater than 1 for all children (QR = 2.75; 95%CI 2.64-2.86). Conclusions: Schoolchildren were exposed to high doses of O3 during the dry season of the region. This posed a toxicological risk, especially to those who had previous diseases.

Human health risk assessment of air pollutants in the largest coal mining area in Brazil

Abstract:The Candiota region, located in the extreme south of Brazil, has the largest mineral coal deposit in the country, and this activity is capable of releasing pollutants in which they are associated with the contamination of different matrices (soil, water, and air). The present study aimed to carry out a risk assessment to human health of atmospheric pollutants NO2 and SO2 and PM10-bound metal(loid)s in the municipality of Candiota, in addition to evaluating the correlation of meteorological parameters for the dynamics and potential risk of these pollutants. Pollutants were sampled from stations located almost 4 km from coal exploration activities, and the trace elements As, Cd, Se, Pb, and Ni, in addition to NO2 and SO2, were evaluated. Risk assessment was conducted taking into account the risk to adults via the inhalation route. During the sampling period, all pollutants presented values lower than national legislation or internationally accepted values, and Pb was the element that presented the highest values throughout the sampled period. The risk assessment showed no carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks, even when considering the sum of the risk of all analyzed pollutants. It can be observed that the highest levels of Pb, As, and Se occurred in the winter season, while the levels of Ni and Cd were higher in the spring, and the meteorological parameters were correlated with the pollutants, even using a temporal lag of 5 days. Although the air pollutants evaluated did not present a risk to human health, continuous monitoring of regions with strong mineral exploration activity must be carried out with a view to maintaining the well-being of exposed populations, mainly because there are people living in areas closer to sources of coal pollution than distance to air quality monitoring stations.

Abstract:This study aimed to characterize air pollution and the associated carcinogenic risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) at an urban site, to identify possible emission sources of PAHs using several statistical methodologies, and to analyze the influence of other air pollutants and meteorological variables on PAH concentrations.The air quality and meteorological data were collected in Oporto, the second largest city of Portugal. Eighteen PAHs (the 16 PAHs considered by United States Environment Protection Agency (USEPA) as priority pollutants, dibenzo[a,l]pyrene, and benzo[j]fluoranthene) were collected daily for 24 h in air (gas phase and in particles) during 40 consecutive days in November and December 2008 by constant low-flow samplers and using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane filters for particulate (PM10 and PM2.5 bound) PAHs and pre-cleaned polyurethane foam plugs for gaseous compounds. The other monitored air pollutants were SO2, PM10, NO2, CO, and O3; the meteorological variables were temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, total precipitation, and solar radiation. Benzo[a]pyrene reached a mean concentration of 2.02 ng m−3, surpassing the EU annual limit value. The target carcinogenic risks were equal than the health-based guideline level set by USEPA (10−6) at the studied site, with the cancer risks of eight PAHs reaching senior levels of 9.98 × 10−7 in PM10 and 1.06 × 10−6 in air. The applied statistical methods, correlation matrix, cluster analysis, and principal component analysis, were in agreement in the grouping of the PAHs. The groups were formed according to their chemical structure (number of rings), phase distribution, and emission sources. PAH diagnostic ratios were also calculated to evaluate the main emission sources. Diesel vehicular emissions were the major source of PAHs at the studied site. Besides that source, emissions from residential heating and oil refinery were identified to contribute to PAH levels at the respective area. Additionally, principal component regression indicated that SO2, NO2, PM10, CO, and solar radiation had positive correlation with PAHs concentrations, while O3, temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed were negatively correlated.

Impacts of PM2.5 exposure near cement facilities on human health and years of life lost: A case study in Brazil

Abstract:Cement factories significantly contribute to atmospheric pollution by generating fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which can potentially increase the mortality risk. The lack of information on the health impacts of PM2.5 pollution from cement operations in Brazil prompted this investigation. We used corrected PM2.5 measurements from low-cost sensors from March 2021 to October 2022 in Rio Branco do Sul, city in the southern region of the country and home to Latin America's largest cement plant, to assess exposure data. Disability-adjusted life years (DALY) method was applied to estimate the years of life lost (YLL) and cost estimate due to deaths from non-accidental causes, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. The total YLL attributable to PM2.5 concentration was estimated by calculating the attributable fraction (AF) through relative risk. We also collected PM2.5 using a Harvard impactor to evaluate health risks from toxic metals components. During the study period, the analysis of chemical characterization of PM2.5 showed enrichment factors for most elements and the possible influence of the calcination process facilities on the PM2.5 levels. The mean concentration of PM2.5 exceeded the annual WHO air quality guideline (AQG) level, accounted for 3.5%, 4.7%, and 4.3% of total YLL from all causes, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases, which corresponded to 0.23 (95% CI: 0.17-0.26), 0.06 (95% CI: 0.05-0.07) and 0.03 (95% CI: 0.01-0.06) years loss in life expectancy, respectively. An indirect health cost attributable to PM2.5 resulted in US$ 1.4 million, equivalent to about 3.5% of the total local annual health costs in Rio Branco do Sul, underscoring the significant financial burden of PM2.5 exposures. The greatest economic loss was found in the male age group of 40-69 years and among those with cardiovascular disease, rather than those with respiratory disease. Despite this, the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks from inhalation of hazardous elements were within safe ranges. This work demonstrated PurpleAir's potential for air quality and public health applications. Our findings indicate health and economic benefits from reducing PM2.5 levels by adopting WHO air pollution standards. The results can guide policies toward delivering more effective health care.
Emission Factors, Chemical Composition and Ecotoxicity of PM10 from Road Dust Resuspension in a Small Inland City

Abstract:Road dust resuspension in urban environments can contribute to high human exposure to metal(loid)s, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and other potentially toxic organic compounds. However, for many regions, information on loadings, emission factors and chemical profiles is lacking to accurately apply emission inventories and source apportionment models. In the present study, PM 10 samples were collected with an in situ road dust sampler from eleven representative streets of Bragança, an inland city of the Iberian Peninsula, and were analysed for organic and elemental carbon by a thermal-optical technique, elemental composition by ICP-MS and ICP-OES, and ecotoxicity by a luminescence inhibition bioassay with Allivibrio fischeri . A global emission factor of 5.36 ± 2.35 mg veh −1 km −1 was obtained but in suburban areas the values reached twice the average. Total carbon accounted for 14.9 ± 6.8% of the PM 10 mass, while element oxides represented the largest share (28.6 ± 18.7%). Very high enrichments were found for typical traffic-related elements such as Cu, Zn, S, Pb and Ni. The geochemical index I geo further confirmed that road dust of the study region is extremely contaminated by elements mainly originated from tyre and brake wear. Although the total non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks associated with metal exposure were found to be low for both children and adults, the bioluminescence inhibition assay showed (eco)toxic responses for all samples, indicating that road dust resuspension may pose a significant human health and ecological threat.

Abstract:Daily violations of air quality have an impact on urban populations and cause damage to the environment. Thus, the study evaluated the violations of the daily concentrations of SO 2 , NO 2 , and PM 10 , in regions of the State of São Paulo (SSP), based on the National Environment Council (CONAMA) resolution no 491/2018 and the World Health Organization (WHO - World Health Organization. (2016). Ambient air pollution: a global assessment of exposure and burden of disease.) criteria. Daily SO 2 , NO 2 , and PM 10 data from 6 air quality stations operated by Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo CETESB (1996–2011) were organized and submitted to quality control, with data faults (gaps) being identified. The imputation of data via spline proved satisfactory in filling in the gaps ( r > 0.7 and low values of Standard Error of the Estimate (SEE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The cluster analysis (CA) applied to SO 2 formed only one homogeneous group (G 1 ). Contrariwise, NO 2 and PM 10 formed two homogeneous groups (G 1 and G 2 ) each. The stations that showed the greatest similarity according to the CA were Cerqueira Cesar and Osasco. The cophenetic matrix generated for SO 2 (0.83), NO 2 (0.79), and PM 10 (0.77) indicate a satisfactory adjustment of the dendrograms. The exploratory statistics applied to groups G 1 and G 2 point to the high variability of outliers. The WHO criteria are more restrictive than CONAMA regarding daily violations, with a reduction in SO 2 and an increase in specific years for NO 2 and PM 10 . Such variability is due to the adoption of public policies by the SSP and the influence of meteorological systems, being confirmed by the Run test that indicated oscillations in the time series, mainly in PM 10 , and also recognized well-defined biannual cycles.

Abstract:People spend most of their time indoors, particularly in their houses where daily activities are carried out, enhancing particulate matter (PM) emissions with consequent adverse health impacts. This study intended to appraise the toxicological and mutagenic responses of particulate matter with a diameter less than 10 μm (PM10) released from cooking and ironing activities under different conditions. The cytotoxicity of the PM10 total organic extracts was tested in A549 cells using the WST-8 and the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays, while the interference in cell cycle dynamics and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was analysed by flow cytometry. The S. typhimurium TA98 and TA100 Ames tester strains with and without metabolic activation were employed to determine the mutagenic potential of the PM10-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PM10 organic extracts decreased the metabolic activity of A549 cells; however, no effects in the LDH release were observed. An increase in ROS levels was registered only for cells treated with PM10 at IC20 from steam ironing, in low ventilation conditions, while cell cycle dynamics was only affected by exposure to PM10 at IC20 from frying horse mackerel and grilling boneless pork strips. No mutagenic effects were observed for all the PM10-bound PAHs samples.

The impacts of long-term exposure to PM2.5 on cancer hospitalizations in Brazil

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to PM2.5 has been linked to cancer incidence and mortality. However, it was unknown whether there was an association with cancer hospitalizations.METHODS: Data on cancer hospitalizations and annual PM2.5 concentrations were collected from 1,814 Brazilian cities during 2002-2015. A difference-in-difference approach with quasi-Poisson regression was applied to examine State-specific associations. The State-specific associations were pooled at a national level using random-effect meta-analyses. PM2.5 attributable burden were estimated for cancer hospitalization admissions, inpatient days and costs.RESULTS: We included 5,102,358 cancer hospitalizations (53.8% female). The mean annual concentration of PM2.5 was 7.0 μg/m3 (standard deviation: 4.0 μg/m3). With each 1 μg/m3 increase in two-year-average (current year and previous one year) concentrations of PM2.5, the relative risks (RR) of hospitalization were 1.04 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.02 to 1.07) for all-site cancers from 2002 to 2015 without sex and age differences. We estimated that 33.82% (95%CI: 14.97% to 47.84%) of total cancer hospitalizations could be attributed to PM2.5 exposure in Brazil during the study time. For every 100,000 population, 1,190 (95%CI: 527 to 1,836) cancer hospitalizations, 8,191 (95%CI: 3,627 to 11,587) inpatient days and US$788,775 (95%CI: $349,272 to $1,115,825) cost were attributable to PM2.5 exposure.CONCLUSIONS: Long-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 was positively associated with hospitalization for many cancer types in Brazil. Inpatient days and cost would be saved if the annual PM2.5 exposure was reduced.

Abstract:Classrooms are microenvironments in which children and teenagers may be exposed to fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Iranduba is a rural city in the Amazon region close to many brick kilns and road with high traffic levels. In this study, indoor and outdoor PM2.5 levels were measured in a classroom in Iranduba, and the PM2.5 exposure effects on student's health were calculated. High indoor PM2.5 concentrations and high indoor-to-outdoor ratio values indicated particle accumulation within the classroom. The high percentage of black carbon (10%) in the dry season revealed the influence of burning processes on PM2.5 composition. Se, S, and Pb had an enrichment factor > 5, indicating that there is an important source for these elements in the city. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model indicated soil resuspension, burning processes and vehicular emissions as the main PM2.5 sources. The excess risk shows that our classroom occupants are expected to be 30% more likely to develop lung-cancer than a group exposed to a background level of PM2.5. Therefore, it is important to have an effective ventilation system in order to reduce the accumulation of pollutants within the classroom and also to control/decrease the emission of pollutants in the city.

Abstract:Air pollution is a worldwide environmental problem with an impact on human health. Particulate matter of ten micrometers or less aerodynamic diameter (PM10) as well as its fine fraction (PM2.5) is related to multiple pulmonary diseases. The impact of air pollution in Mexico City, and importantly, particulate matter has been studied and considered as a risk factor for two decades ago. Previous studies have reported the composition of Mexico City particulate matter, as well as the biological effects induced by this material. However, material collected and used in previous studies is a limited resource, and sampling and particle recovery techniques have been improved. In this study, we describe the methods used in our laboratory for Mexico City airborne particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5 sampling, considering the years 2017, 2018 and 2019. We also analyzed the PM10 and PM2.5 samples obtained to determine their composition. Finally, we exposed lung cell line cultures to PM10 and PM2.5 to evaluate the biological effect of the material in terms of cell viability, cell death, inflammatory response, and cytogenetic alterations. Our results showed that PM10 composition includes inorganic, organic and biological compounds, while PM2.5 is a mixture of more enriched organic compounds. PM10 and PM2.5 treatment in lung cells does not significantly impact cell viability/cell death. However, PM10 and PM2.5 increase the secretion levels of IL-6. Moreover, PM10 as well as PM2.5 induce cytogenetic alterations, such as micronuclei, anaphase bridges, trinucleated cells and apoptotic cells in lung cells. Our results update the evidence of the composition and biological effects of Mexico City particulate matter and provide us a reliable basis for future approaches.

Abstract:Emissions from biomass burning challenge efforts to curb air pollution in cities downwind of fire-prone regions, as they contribute large amounts of brown carbon (BrC) and black carbon (BC) particles. We investigated the patterns of BrC and BC concentrations using Aethalometer data (at λ = 370 and 880 nm, respectively) spanning four years at a site impacted by the outflow of smoke. The data required to be post processed for the shadowing effect since, without correction, concentrations would be between 29% and 35% underestimated. The BrC concentrations were consistently higher than the BC concentrations, indicating the prevalence of aerosols from biomass burning. The results were supported by the Ångström coefficient (Å370/880), with values predominantly larger than 1 (mean ± standard deviation: 1.25 ± 0.31). Å370/880 values below 1 were more prevalent during the wet season, which suggests a contribution from fossil fuel combustion. We observed sharp BrC and BC seasonal signals, with mean minimum concentrations of 0.40 µg/m3 and 0.36 µg/m3, respectively, in the wet season, and mean maximum concentrations of 2.05 µg/m3 and 1.53 µg/m3 in the dry season. The largest concentrations were observed when northerly air masses moved over regions with a high density of fire spots. Local burning of residential solid waste and industrial combustion caused extreme BrC and BC concentrations under favourable wind directions. Although neither pollutant is included in any ambient air quality standards, our results suggest that transboundary smoke may hamper efforts to meet the World Health Organization guidelines for fine particles.
