Abstract:Clean and safe water resources are essential for environmental safety and human health. Hydrogels and biomass polymers have attracted considerable attention in recent years, considering their nontoxicity, controllable performance, and high adsorption capacity. The interpenetrating network described here is a combination of biomass polymer and hydrogel adsorbent was established, the biomass polymer microspheres were first prepared with the combination of biomass monomer trans-anethole and maleic anhydride copolymer. A simple, environment-friendly, and facile method of incorporating biomass polymer into sodium alginate biopolymer was developed by introducing cross-linking agent calcium chloride and glutaraldehyde into the biomass polymer. Furthermore, the biomass polymer sodium alginate hydrogel (BP@SA/H) was characterized by FTIR, XPS, SEM and XRD. In order to test materials' performance, the removal of pollutants and adsorption study were also investigated after and before adsorption toward metals and dyes in water. We examined the factors influencing the materials adsorption capability, such as initial concentration, time, absorbent amount, and pH. Moreover, the maximum adsorption toward Pb+2 and Cd+2 are 734.9 and 722 mg/g. While the adsorption toward RhB dye are 745 mg/g. In addition, the adsorption results were investigated using the kinetic and isothermal models, demonstrating that biomass polymer hydrogel adsorption is chemisorption. Therefore, the as-developed biomass polymer sodium alginate hydrogel (BP@SA/H) is an exceptional multifunctional material that can be used to remove hazardous pollutants from wastewater.

Abstract:Efficient removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from contaminated water is considered a fundamental point of view. Synthetic hydrogel biopolymers based on chitosan and alginate (cost-effective and eco-friendly) were successfully designed and characterized by highly efficient removal contaminants. The sorbents are characterized by FTIR, SEM-EDX, TGA, XPS analyses and textural properties which are qualified by N2 adsorption. The sorption properties are firstly investigated by the effect of pH, sorption isotherms, uptake kinetics, and selectivity from multi-metal solution with equi-molar concentration. The sorbent with 1:3 ratios (of chitosan and alginate respectively) is the most effective for metal removal (i.e., 0.81 mmol Cd g−1 and 0.41 mmol Pb g−1). Langmuir and Sip’s models fitted better the adsorption isotherms compared to the Freundlich model. Uptake kinetics was well fitted by pseudo-first-order rate equation, while the saturation was achieved within 40 min. The sorbent shows good reproducibility through duplicate the experiments with negligible decreasing efficiency (>2.5%). The sorbent was applied for water treatment on samples collected from the industrial area (i.e., 653 and 203 times over the MCL for Cd(II) and Pb(II) respectively according to WHO). The concentration of Cd and Pb was drastically decreased in the effluents as pH increased with removal efficiency up to 99% for both elements at pH 5.8 and SD equivalent 1 g L−1 for 5 h.

Abstract:Alginate-based hydrogel adsorbents are being developed for removing heavy metals from wastewater. Activated sludges are a new source of low-cost alginate, and Pseudomonas species are dominant alginate-producing bacteria. In this work, polyvinyl alcohol/alginate (PVA/ALG) and polyvinyl alcohol/alginate/chitosan (PVA/ALG/CS) hydrogel beads were prepared by cross-linked blending P. aeruginosa alginate with polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan. The results show that PVA/ALG using bacterial alginate had better adsorption performance on Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) than that using commercial product. The maximum adsorption capacities of PVA/ALG and PVA/ALG/CS hydrogels for Pb(II) and Cr(VI) are 139.4 mg/g and 86.1 mg/g, respectively. The addition of chitosan greatly improved the specific adsorption of PVA/ALG/CS for Cr(VI). The adsorption processes of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) by PVA/ALG and PVA/ALG/CS are endothermic in nature, and mainly dominated by chemisorption and physisorption, respectively. After 5 cycles, the adsorption capacity of hydrogels for heavy metals maintains more than 85% of the initial adsorption capacity. The two hydrogels have good adsorption capacity for heavy metals in real water. Electrostatic interaction, complexation and cation exchange are involved in the adsorption of Pb, whereas the adsorption of Cr is related to electrostatic interaction, reduction, chelation and cation exchange. The results extend the application of alginate extracted from activated sludge microorganisms in pollutant removal.

Abstract:An innovative approach was developed for removing very potent heavy metal cations and dyes such as lead (Pb +2 ), copper (Cu +2 ) and methylene blue (MB) from simulated solutions at different application conditions. The sorbent material was green hydrogels based on guar gum/poly acrylamide (GG/PAam) fabricated with rice husk core (GG/PAAm/RH) and the optimized formulation was blended with Ulva fasciata and Sargassum dentifolium green algae (denoted as GG/PAAm/RH/Ulva and GG/PAAm/RH/Sarg respectively). The chemical modification process was confirmed by FTIR. The effect of rice husk on the crystallographic and the thermal properties of the hydrogel composites was verified via the XRD and TGA analyses respectively. The surface topography versus structure variation and adsorption process of the aforementioned hydrogels were substantiated by the AFM in order to prove their suitability as effective candidates for wastewater remediation. Different adsorption and kinetic isotherms were applied to precisely describe the adsorption process. The data reveal that the adsorption mechanism best fit multilayer adsorption Freundlich process with q max values onto GG/PAAm/RH/Ulva and GG/PAAm/RH/Sarg as follows: 50.25 and 73.52 mg g for adsorption of Cu +2 , 45.24 and 52.63 mg g for Pb +2 , and 51.54 and 68.02 mg g for MB. The reusability investigation proved that the algal-supported sorbents were very successful in removing of reasonable amounts of pollutants after four adsorption–desorption cycles.

Abstract:High adsorption capacity, high adsorption rate and reusable adsorbents are urgent needed for removing heavy metals from wastewater. In this study, porous sodium alginate/cellulose nanofiber (SA/CNF) composite hydrogel microspheres were prepared by combining sodium alginate with cellulose nanofibers by microfluidics technology and adding polyethylene glycol (PEG) as pore making agent. The SA/CNF composite hydrogel microspheres could efficiently adsorb heavy metals (Pb2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+) in wastewater. The influencing factors of adsorption process, including pH, temperature, initial concentration, coexisting ions and aquatic environments, were systematically discussed. The adsorption process was more consistent with Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order model in batch system, indicating the adsorption process was mainly chemical adsorption. The adsorption capacity to Pb2+ obtained by Langmuir model was as high as 544.66 mg/g at 20 °C. Fixed-bed column adsorption experiments demonstrated the excellent performance of the as-prepared SA/CNF microspheres for treatment of the flowing wastewater in a column system. Overall, a highly practical adsorption process based on hydrogel adsorbents was developed for the removal of heavy metals from actual wastewater.

Abstract:With the development of modern industry, heavy metal pollution is one of the most important environmental issues. Due to its simplicity and low-cost, adsorption is considered as a green and environmental friendly method to remove heavy metals from industrial effluents. Sodium alginate is a natural polysaccharide, which consists of abundant hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, has been widely reported as the raw material for the adsorption of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. By surface grafting and cross-linking, adsorbents synthesized from sodium alginate have exhibited large uptake capacities as well as high removal rates for heavy metal ions. However, the poor physical strength and plain thermostability have significantly limited the utilization of sodium alginate based materials in industrial applications. Moreover, reductions of specific metal ions were observed in some studies, of which the reduction mechanism is not clearly clarified. In this work, the development of sodium alginate based adsorbents was summarized, including the physicochemical properties of the polymer, the modification of sodium alginate, sodium alginate based composite materials, and the adsorption behaviors as well as the mechanism. Chelation, electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, reduction and photocatalytic reduction were involved in the adsorption process, which can be determined by chemical characterization with further elucidation by density functional theory calculation. Finally, the limitations of sodium alginate based adsorbents were revealed with suggestions for future research.

Abstract:The adsorption method is recognized as an effective technology for dealing with water pollution caused by heavy metal ions. For a highly efficient, eco-friendly and low-cost adsorption process, the adsorbent is the deciding factor. In this study a porous sodium alginate scaffold was prepared by the method of freeze-drying as a heavy metal ion adsorbent. The parameters affecting the morphology and adsorption characteristics of the scaffolds were investigated. The results showed that sodium alginate porous scaffolds could be prepared under the concentration in the range of 1–5%. After calcium ion pre-crosslinking, the sodium alginate scaffold was used to adsorb the heavy metal ions of Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , and Cu 2+ from aqueous solution and the maximum adsorption efficiency under optimized adsorption conditions were 99.43%, 73.67%, and 59.25%, respectively. At the same time, the scaffold could be used for desorption and recycling. After five cycles, the removal percentages of Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ , and Cu 2+ by the sodium alginate scaffold decreased by 25%, 25%, and 16%, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, functionalized sodium alginate hydrogel (FSAH) was prepared to efficiently adsorb heavy metals and dyes. Hydrazide-functionalized sodium alginate (SA) prepared hydrazone groups to selectively capture heavy metals (Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+), and another functional group (dopamine grafting), serves as sites for adsorption methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG), crystal violet (CV). Thermodynamic parameters of adsorption indicated that the adsorption process is endothermic and spontaneous. The heavy metals adsorption by FSAH was physical adsorption mainly due to ΔHθ < 40 kJ/mol, and the adsorption of cationic dyes fitted with the Langmuir models, which indicated that the monolayer adsorption is dominated by hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, and π-π interactions. Moreover, the adsorption efficiency maintained above 70% after five adsorption-desorption cycles. To sum up, FSAH has great application prospect.

Abstract:ABSTRACT. This work was conducted to evaluate the adsorption performance of coffee spent modified Fe-Al-Zr composite. The Al2O3/Fe3O4/ZrO2 ternary oxide system was efficiently synthesized from the respective salt precursors by a two-step co-precipitation method under nitrogen atmosphere in basic condition. XRD, SEM-EDX, FTIR and ICP-OES were used to characterize the features of the adsorbents. The pH point of zero charge of the selected adsorbent was also determined. Batch adsorption experiment was conducted under different conditions such as contact time, initial concentration of dye, pH, sorbent dosage and agitation speed. The Langmuir and Freundlich, isotherms were tested to examine the adsorption behavior. The equilibrium data was well fitted to Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity (qo) was 8.4 mg/g for acidic brown 75 dyes. The kinetic data correlated (R2 = 0.999) well with the pseudo second order kinetic model. To evaluate the practical applicability of the coffee spent supported nanocomposite adsorbent to real samples, effluent was collected from Batu Leather Industry. The result demonstrated 95.7% (10 mg/L) removal efficiency of the dye by the as-obtained composite indicating its potential application for environmental application. Abstract:Widespread contamination by heavy metals (HMs) and dyes poses a major health risk to people and ecosystems requiring effective treatment. In this work, rice husk (RH) and shrimp shells were extracted to obtain amorphous silica and chitosan, respectively, which were utilized to produce nano-chitosan-coated silica (NCCS). To ensure the stability of the nanoparticles, silica was freeze-dried after being coated with nano-chitosan. Functional groups (–NH 2 , –OH, P]O) from chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs) were introduced to the surface of silica during this process. Dyes such as brilliant green (BG), methylene blue (MB) and reactive brown (RB) as well as HMs (Cr 6+ , Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ , Ni 2+ ) were removed by adsorbents. CNPs showed the highest adsorption capacity for RB (59.52 mg/g) among dyes and Cr 6+ (42.55 mg/g) among HMs. CNPs showed the highest adsorption capacity for HMs among different adsorbents. Although NCCS and CNPs showed similar adsorption capabilities for HMs and dyes, NCCS showed the best stability. The adsorption performance decreased as RB > Cr 6+ > MB > BG > Pb 2+ > Cd 2+ > Ni 2+ . The adsorption reactions followed both pseudo-first-order and second-order kinetics, and was spontaneous from thermodynamic analysis. In summary, the waste-derived adsorbents demonstrated excellent potential for removing HMs and dyes from water, while supporting effective management solid waste.

Abstract:Hydrogels are effective adsorbents for removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater due to their three-dimensional network and functional groups. In this paper, an eco-friendly hydrogel based on the polysaccharide extracted from the over-breeding macroalgae Enteromorpha prolifera was constructed and evaluated as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions. DFT calculation results confirmed that the carboxyl and sulfate groups of the Enteromorpha prolifera polysaccharides had certain chemical interactions with Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ , which guarantee the high adsorption capacity for them. The interpenetration strategy used to construct the polysaccharide-based double network hydrogel, through which the mechanical properties, adsorption performance and recyclability of the hydrogel get strengthened synchronously. Overall, the constructed hydrogel is a competitive candidate material for heavy metal ion adsorption because of its low cost and biocompatibility, through which an innovative application of Enteromorpha prolifera from waste to treasure has been realized.
Alginate/Hyphaene thebaica Fruit Shell Biocomposite as Environmentally Friendly and Low-Cost Biosorbent for Heavy Metals Uptake from Aqueous Solution: Batch Equilibrium and Kinetic Studies

Abstract:Current research work reports the investigation carried out on preparation and characterization of an alginate- Hyphaine thebaiba (ALG-HT) biocomposite adsorbent and, its ability to remove Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution using a batch mode. Hyphaine thebaiba fruit shell was used as a precursor for preparation of ALG-HT biocomposite adsorbent. Physicochemical characteristics of synthetized biosorbent were characterized using XRD, SEM–EDX and FTIR analyses. Process parameters influencing metals ions adsorption such as adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial pH of solution, and initial concentration of heavy metal solutions were analysed. Based on R2 (value > 0.99) and nonlinear fit, Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models were suitable in the fitting of isotherm and kinetic data, respectively, indicating that chemisorption mechanism was involved. Langmuir maximum adsorption capacities of the biosorbent was for isotherm study (initial concentrations varying from 50 to 300 mg/L) were found to be in the range of 104.17 > 67.73 > 63.25 mg/g for Pb2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+, respectively. Highest adsorption capacity of ALG-HT was observed for the removal of lead ions. These results make it possible to propose ALG-HT composite as potential environmentally friendly and low-cost biosorbent for treatment of waters contaminated with bivalent heavy metals.Graphical Abstract
Impact of silver-doped alumina nanocomposite on water decontamination by remodeling of biogenic waste

Abstract:The main cause of various fatal diseases in humans and animals is environmental pollution. Ag-doped alumina nanocomposite was prepared using coffee husk extract with a large BET surface area of 126.58 m2 g-1 and investigated for its antibacterial potential against both bacterial strains Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium, and observed as an effective sorbent for removing the water pollution dye indigo carmine (IGC). The lowest concentration of the nanocomposite and the maximum contact time required to achieve complete inhibition of bacteria present in the contaminated water, as well as the capacity of sorption of IGC, were investigated. The results showed that the minimum inhibitory concentration of the Ag-doped alumina nanocomposite was 12 µg mL-1 for both bacterial strains, with the highest inhibition occurring in E. coli. Moreover, the nanocomposite exhibited an experimental qt of 462.7 mg g-1 from 160 mg L-1 IGC solution at 50 °C and followed the Langmuir model. The thermodynamic results showed that the process was endothermic, spontaneous, and physisorptive. The nanocomposite was used to fully treat water samples contaminated with 10 mg L-1 concentrations of IGC. For six consecutive cycles, the reuse research showed an average efficiency of 95.72 ± 3.6%. Consequently, the synthesized Ag-doped alumina nanocomposite is suitable for treatments of contaminated water.

Abstract:RECENT investigations by Hoagland and Pincus 1 have emphasized the defective physiological responses of the schizophrenic patient to adrenocortical stimulation. Altschule and co-workers 2 have reported essentially normal physiological responses to corticotrophin in schizophrenic patients, with the exception of suggestive greater-than-normal changes in glucose tolerance. In an attempt to evaluate the relationship between adrenocortical activity and the psychological state, we administered corticotrophin in large doses to six patients (three men and three women) with schizophrenia. Significant data concerning these patients are presented in the accompanying table. All the patients were observed in a control period varying from two to four weeks before the administration of the corticotrophin. Abstract:Release of industrial effluents comprising dyes in water bodies is one of the foremost causes of water pollution. Therefore, the proper and proficient treatment of these dyes contaminated left-over material before their release is crucial. Herein, an eco-friendly biological macromolecule Gum-Acacia (GA) integrated Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles composite hydrogel was manufactured via co-precipitation technique for effective adsorption of Congo red (CR) dye existing in water bodies. The as-prepared magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel was characterized by FTIR, XRD, EDX, VSM, SEM, and BET techniques. These studies discovered the fruitful fabrication of biodegradable magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel possessing porous structure with large surface area (21.78 m 2 /g) and enough saturated magnetization value (24.5 emu/g) for the efficient elimination of CR. The magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel showed higher adsorption (96.3%) of CR as compared to pristine Fe 3 O 4 (45%) in 50 min at pH 6 with 0.02 g of adsorbent and 100 ppm CR. The data obtained from the adsorption of CR over GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel have a linear relationship, following the pseudo second-order kinetic model (R 2 =0.990) and Freundlich adsorption isotherm model (R 2 =0.983). The evaluated factors of thermodynamic recommended that the experiments were favourable, spontaneous, and exothermic in nature. In addition, the biodegradable magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel also exhibited excellent desorption as well as recyclability owing to its amazing robust magnetic nature. What is more, the GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel reserved the same % adsorption proficiency (>96.3%) up to several repeated rounds, proving its potential applicability for water purgative at domestic plus industrial level.

Abstract:Heavy metal ions contain highly toxic and non-biodegradable wastewater pollutants seriously contaminating the environment and affecting human health. Removal of heavy metal ions from the environment is a vital step towards the elimination of water pollution on a global scale. Therefore, in this study, cellulose was modified with L-cysteine, sodium alginate and polyethyleneimine to produce cellulose/sodium alginate /polyethyleneimine/L-cysteine composite hydrogel microspheres (WCMs/SA/PEI/L-Cys) in order to efficiently adsorb heavy metal ions. Co(II) and Ni(II) are successfully removed from water. After their production, the sorbents underwent examination using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the investigation of the mechanism and adsorption characteristics of cellulose-modified gel microspheres WCMs/SA/PEI/L-Cys has been completed. The majority of the adsorption of contaminants by cellulose-modified gel microspheres WCMs/SA/PEI/L-Cys adhered to the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model and quasi-secondary kinetic model. The intra-particle diffusion model was adopted for improving the fitting of the adsorption process in the materials. It was indicated that the internal and external diffusion acted together to eliminate the contaminants from the materials. When exploring the decontamination mechanism of the materials using XPS, it was shown that the functional groups containing nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur play a key role in removing contaminants. For Co(II) and Ni(II), the highest adsorption capacities of the sorbent were 358 and 373 mg/g, respectively. The material exhibited robust stability and recyclability based on the regeneration experiment results, remaining stable after six adsorption cycles and retaining over 80% of the initial adsorption amount.

Abstract:A genetic map of the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum is presented in which 42 loci are ordered on five of the seven linkage groups. Although most of the loci were ordered using standing mitotic crossing-over techniques in which recessive selective markers were employed, use was also made of unselected recombined haploid strains. Consistent with cytological studies in which the chromosomes appear to be acrocentric, only a single arm has been found for each of the five linkage groups studied. The mating-type locus, matA, has been located in the tsgE-sprA interval on linkage group I on the basis of studies on diploids formed between strains of opposite mating type that have escaped from vegetative incompatibility.

Abstract:Novel porous alginate-based nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared by incorporating polyaniline-polypyrrole modified graphene oxide () as reinforcing fillers into the alginate matrix (/SA) for Cr(VI) and Cu(II) removal from water. Different in-situ co-polymerization functionalized GO with Py-to-An mass ratios of monomers (from nil to 1:1) and contents of (from nil to 2.0%(w/v)) were embedded into the alginate backbone to improve the sorption performance. Key factors, such as pH, coexisting metal ions, and swelling states were investigated in batch adsorption modes. The synergistic effect combined from polymer backbone and fillers could lower the impact of the pH-dependent adsorption reaction. With an adsorption ability superior to that of plain SA and GO/SA, the optimized (1)/SA exhibited good experimental maximum adsorption capacities for Cr(VI) (~133.7 mg/g) and Cu(II) (~87.2 mg/g) at pH 3.0, which were better than those of many other similar sorbents. The sorbents possessed excellent adaptability for 0.2 M salt for Cr(VI) removal but poor for Cu(II) removal. Pre-swelling treatment and co-adsorption could enhance the adsorption performance. The excellent reusability of hydrogel was demonstrated after five cycles in single/binary system. Overall, this work reveals that the resultant hydrogel holds potential as candidate sorbent to remove anionic-cationic heavy metal ions from water.
