Abstract:Municipal wastewater discharge is threatening the ecological security of the local water environment. This study investigated the field process performance and microorganism characteristics of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in China. The results showed that three WWTPs met the required criteria of phosphorus for discharge (≤1 mg/L), but with a low level of Accumulibacter (6.4 to 3.8%, on average) and a relatively high level of Competibacter (3.2 to 9.1%) in sludge. The phosphorus release and uptake rates were varied from 0.224 to 7.770 mg/gVSS·h and 0.386 to 7.901 mg/gVSS·h, respectively. Denitrifying polyphosphate‐accumulating organisms were estimated to be 28.2% of the polyphosphate‐accumulating organisms. Sludge characteristics (phosphorus release and uptake rates) were positively correlated with the abundance of Accumulibacter and negatively correlated with the proportion of Competibacter. Moreover, the lower the ratio of anaerobic phosphorus/acetate (e.g., 0.496) is, the more abundant the Competibacter would be. Further discussion on an improvement strategy for these WWTPs for EBPR should be comprehensively based on the data of periodic investigations on field operation, sludge activities, and microbial populations.
Integrated control strategy for dual sludge ages in the high-concentration powder carrier bio-fluidized bed (HPB) technology: Enhancing municipal wastewater treatment efficiency

Abstract:The high-concentration powder carrier bio-fluidized bed (HPB) technology is an emerging approach that enables on-site upgrading of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). HPB technology promotes the formation of biofilm sludge with micron-scale composite powder carriers as the core and suspended sludge mainly composed of flocs surrounding the biofilm sludge. This study proposed a novel integrated strategy for assessing and controlling the sludge ages in suspended/bio-film activated sludge supported by micron-scale composite powder carrier. Utilizing the cyclone unit and the corresponding theoretical model, the proposed strategy effectively addresses the sludge ages contradiction between denitrifying bacteria and polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs), thereby enhancing the efficiency of municipal wastewater treatment. The sludge age of the suspended (25 d) and bio-film (99 d) sludge, calculated using the model, contribute to the simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. Meanwhile, the model further estimates distinct contributions of suspended and bio-film sludge to chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (TN), which are 55% and 42% for COD, 20% and 57% for TN of suspended sludge and bio-film sludge, respectively. This suggests that the contribution of suspended sludge and bio-film sludge to COD and TN removal efficiency can be determined and controlled by the operational conditions of the cyclone unit. Additionally, the simulation values for COD, ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), TN and total phosphorus (TP) closely align with the actual values of WWTPs over 70 days (p < 0.001) with the correlation coefficients (R2) of 0.9809, 0.9932, 0.9825, and 0.837, respectively. These results support the theoretical foundation of HPB technology for simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal in sewage treatment plants. Therefore, this model serves as a valuable tool to guide the operation, design, and carrier addition in HPB technology implementation.

Abstract:Anaerobic granular sludge was introduced to phosphorus removal system, creating a new process for phosphorus removal with the combination of biological medium addition and calcium hydroxyphosphate crystallization. The effects of pH, Ca/P ratio, HRT on the performance of new process were investigated to optimize process parameters. The results demonstrated that the optimal parameters were pH = 12, Ca/P = 3.34 (mole ratio), HRT = 60min for synthetic wastewater with phosphorus concentration of 30mg/L. Under the optimal condition, phosphorus removal efficiency was 99.81% and the effluent phosphorus concentration was 0.057mg/L. The new process was operated for the phosphorus removal from piggery wastewater, which phosphorus removal efficiency was 85.85% and the effluent phosphorus concentration was 4.67mg/L.The phosphorus was enriched in the product, especially in the top and central part of reactor. The phosphorus of product mainly existed in the form of hydroxyapatite and its content by P2O5 was 37. 68% and 36.57% respectively, which has reached the standard of high quality phosphate rock and has a high value for phosphorus reuse.
Metagenomics reveals a full-scale modified integrated fixed-film activated sludge process: Enhanced nitrogen removal and reduced sludge production

Abstract:This study provides a side-by-side comparative investigation between the full-scale conventional activated sludge (CAS) and the high-concentration powder carrier bio-fluidized bed (HPB) processes. The results showed that the HPB total nitrogen removal efficiency increased by 10.86 % more than CAS. The anammox pathway increased by 6.92 %, while the simultaneous nitrification-denitrification pathway increased by 4.27 %. Also, the effluent's total nitrogen of the HPB process was stabilized below 10 mg/L, which can withstand the impact of industrial wastewater better. More energy and substance (protein) were consumed to attach to the carriers and resist external selective pressure to produce extracellular polymeric substance rather than sludge production in the HPB process. For a 10,000 m3/d HPB wastewater treatment plant, lowering the total nitrogen and sludge production saved $110,369.64 in annual operating costs.
[Heart transplantation in an HIV-infected patient].

Abstract:Because of its own unfavourable evolution, HIV infection was until recently considered a contraindication for organ transplantation. The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy prolonged the life expectancy of these patients and allowed the manifestation of disorders directly or indirectly related to HIV infection, mainly liver, kidney and cardiovascular diseases. We present a case of cardiac transplantation due to dilated cardiomyopathy that was performed in a patient with a recently detected HIV infection. At 24 month follow-up, the patient is in very good health status, his CD4 are increasing and the viral load is undetectable. He did not present transplant rejection or any other complication. To our knowledge, there is no previous publication on heart transplantation in patients with HIV in South America. In view of the successful outcome of our case and of the few cases reported in the international literature, we consider that heart transplantation is a therapeutic option in correctly selected HIV patients.
Biological Phosphorus Removal from Real Wastewater in a Sequencing Batch Reactor Operated As Aerobic/extended-Idle Regime

Abstract:Recently, it has been reported that biological phosphorus removal (BPR) could be achieved in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with aerobic/extended-idle (A/EI) regime using synthetic medium. This paper first examined the feasibility and stability of the A/EI regime treating real domestic wastewater. The results showed that the A/EI-SBR removed 1.32 +/- 0.03-3.55 +/- 0.04 mg of phosphorus per g of volatile suspended solids during the steady-state operation, suggesting that BPR from domestic wastewater could be well realised in the A/EI regime. Then, another SBR operated as the conventional anaerobic/oxic (A/O) regime was conducted to compare the soluble orthophosphate (SOP) removal with the A/EI regime. The results clearly showed that the A/EI regime achieved higher SOP removal than the A/O regime. Finally, the mechanism for the A/EI-SBR driving superior SOP removal was investigated. It was found that the sludge cultured by the A/EI regime had more polyphosphate accumulating organisms and less glycogen accumulating organisms than that by the A/O regime. Further investigations showed that the A/EI-SBR had a lower glycogen transformation and a higher PHB/PHV ratio, which correlated well with the superior phosphorus removal. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Efficient phosphorus removal from MBR effluent with heated aluminum oxide particles (HAOPs)

Abstract:Biological processes and chemical precipitation in combination with polishing by granular media or membrane filtration can remove 90-95% of the phosphorus (P) from wastewater. However, reducing the concentration to levels near those in high-quality receiving waters requires additional advanced treatment, typically including adsorption onto specialty media. These processes are often costly, they can be hard to control when the P loading varies, and their effectiveness can be compromised by the presence of competing adsorbates in the water. In this work, a novel process that might mitigate or overcome some of these challenges was explored. In the process, water is treated by passage through micron-sized adsorbent particles (Heated Aluminum Oxide Particles, HAOPs) packed in a layer that is < 1 mm thick, thus combining the attractive features of very small particles with those of flow through packed media. In laboratory tests using both synthetic feed and the effluent from an MBR at a full-scale wastewater treatment plant, the process removed P very efficiently until the HAOPs' capacity was nearly exhausted, at which point rapid breakthrough of P occurred. The removal capacity was proportional to the thickness of the HAOPs layer and declined by only ∼20% when SO42-, Cl-, and NO3- were all added to the MBR effluent at concentrations of 30 mM (2880, 1065, and 1860 mg/L, respectively). Increasing the solution pH from 7.0 to 8.5 had a similar effect, and increasing the flux of water through the adsorbent layer from 200 to 600 LMH had an even smaller effect (∼10% reduction in removal capacity). In 18 days of continuous pilot-scale operation at the treatment plant, the process performed well, achieving 99.5% P removal steadily during the final seven days of testing, during which the P concentration in the feed ranged from 4 to 9 mg/L. The process also removed 52% of the organic matter in the MBR effluent, as represented by UV254. The sludge generated by the process was extremely easy to dewater and dry.
Combined Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (EBPR) and Nitrite Accumulation for Treating High-strength Wastewater

Abstract:AbstractThe enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) has been widely applied in treating domestic wastewater, while the performance on high-strength P wastewater is less investigated and the feasibility of coupling with short-cut nitrogen removal process remains unknown. This study first achieved the simultaneous high-efficient P removal and stable nitrite accumulation in one sequencing batch reactor for treating the synthetic digested manure wastewater. The average effluent P could be down to 0.8 ± 1.0 mg P/L and the P removal efficiency was 99.5 ± 0.8%. Candidatus Accumulibacter was the dominant polyphosphate accumulating organism (PAO) with the relative abundance of 14.2-33.1% in the reactor. Examination of the micro-diversity of Candidatus Accumulibacter using 16s rRNA gene-based oligotyping analysis revealed one unique Accumulibacter oligotype that different from the conventional system, which accounted for 64.2-87.9% of the total Accumulibacter abundance. The presence of high-abundant glycogen accumulating organisms (GAO) (15.6-40.3%, Defluviicoccus and Candidatus Competibacter) did not deteriorate the EBPR performance. Moreover, nitrite accumulation happened in the system with the effluent nitrite up to 20.4 ± 6.4 mg N/L and the nitrite accumulation ratio was nearly 100% maintained for 140 days (420 cycles). Nitrosomonas was the dominant ammonia-oxidizing bacteria with relative abundance of 0.3-2.4% while nitrite-oxidizing bacteria were almost undetected (<0.1%). The introduction of extended anaerobic phase and high volatile fatty acid concentrations were proposed to be the potential selector forces to promote partial nitrification. This is the first study that combined EBPR with nitrite-accumulation for digested manure wastewater treatment, and it provided new sights in strategies to combine the EBPR and short-cut nitrogen removal via nitrite to achieve simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal.

Abstract:This study investigated the fate of phosphorus (P) in 8 full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Shanghai, China, in which both biological nutrient removal and aluminum-based chemical phosphorus removal were used. The results showed that 83.8–98.9 % P was transferred to the sludge in the 8 WWTPs by both chemical and biological reactions. P speciation analysis indicated that chemical P precipitates accounted for 84.3 % in the activated sludge, of which crystalline AlPO 4 and amorphous iron‐phosphorus compounds (FePs) were the main components. Sludge with more water-soluble and weakly adsorbed P was generated in the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A/A/O) process than in other processes. Among the 8 WWTPs, the one with the largest flow rate and relatively short sludge retention time (SRT) had the best potential to release P from all types of sludge. The recovery potential of P from thickened sludge can be improved by separately thickening the sludge produced in the high-efficiency sedimentation tank or feeding it into the dewatering process directly. Different P removal chemicals and dosing points changed the amount of chemical precipitate formed but had little effect on the composition of P accumulating organisms (PAOs) at the genus level. Although aluminum-based coagulants were applied in the investigated WWTPs, Fe in wastewater had the most positive effect on the proliferation of PAOs. The synthesis of polyphosphate was also related to the metabolism of PAOs as it affected transmembrane inorganic phosphate (Pi) transport and polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) synthesis. The in-depth understanding of the fate of P is beneficial to improve P recovery efficiency in WWTPs.

Abstract:The development of efficient and low-consumption wastewater upgrading process is currently at the forefront of the wastewater treatment field. In this study, a novel wastewater treatment process based on powder carriers was proposed. Three systems, namely the activated sludge (AS) system, powder carrier (PC) system, and moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) system, were established and operated for over 140 days to treat real municipal wastewater. The characteristics and differences between the three systems were comprehensively investigated. The results suggested that the PC system exhibited notable advantages in nitrogen and phosphorus removal, especially under high influent load and low aeration conditions. The PC system, characterized by a higher nitrification rate compared to the MBBR system and a higher denitrification rate compared to the AS system, contributed to the stable nitrogen removal performance. The particle size of the zoogloea increased under the linkage of the powder carriers, and the mean size of micro-granules reached 170.88 μm. Large number of hydrophobic functional groups on sludge surface, coupled with increased protein content in EPS, further promoted sludge aggregation. Micro-granules formation improved settling performance and enhanced the abundance and activity of functional microbes. A significant enrichment in denitrifying bacteria and denitrifying phosphorus accumulating bacteria was observed in PC system. Up-regulation of the napA, narG , and nosZ genes was responsible for efficient nitrogen removal of the PC system. Moreover, a higher abundance in polyphosphate phosphotransferase (2.11 %) was found in PC system compared with AS and MBBR systems. The increase in the enzymes associated with poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) synthesis metabolism in PC system provided the energy for denitrification and phosphorus removal processes.

Abstract:Previous researches have demonstrated that biological phosphorus removal from wastewater could be induced by oxic/extended-idle (O/EI) regime. In this study, an anoxic period was introduced after the aeration to realize biological nutrient removal. High nitrite accumulation ratio and polyhydroxyalkanoates biosynthesis were obtained in the aeration and biological nutrient removal could be well achieved in oxic/anoxic/extended-idle (O/A/EI) regime for the wastewater used. In addition, nitrogen and phosphorus removal performance in O/A/EI regime was compared with that in conventional anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic (A(2)/O) and O/EI processes. The results showed that O/A/EI regime exhibited higher nitrogen and phosphorus removal than A(2)/O and O/EI processes. More ammonium oxidizing bacteria and polyphosphate accumulating organisms and less glycogen accumulating organisms containing in the biomass might be the principal reason for the better nitrogen and phosphorus removal in O/A/EI regime. Furthermore, biological nutrient removal with O/A/EI regime was demonstrated with municipal wastewater. The average TN, SOP and COD removal efficiencies were 93%, 95% and 87%, respectively.

Abstract:In this study, diatomite, activated carbon, and iron–carbon (Fe–C) were used as biological carriers for the integrated fixed-film activated sludge process. Biomass, pollutant removal efficiency, and extracellular polymer were tested, and the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus removal, enzyme activity, and microbial diversity were studied after the sludge retention time was changed. The mechanism of carrier enriching microorganism and promoting pollutant degradation was studied. The results showed that the addition of these three carriers contributed to the enrichment of nitrifying bacteria in the system, and the NH 4 + -N removal efficiency was above 98%. Diatomite and Fe–C could improve pollutant removal by increasing the activity of the electron transfer system. The abundance of denitrogenation-related reductases and the enzymes synthesizing poly-β-hydroxybutyrate was increased in activated carbon. The addition of Fe–C increased the abundance of denitrifying phosphate-accumulating organisms by approximately 25% and the removal efficiency of total phosphorus by 12.61–14.88% at the end of the long-term operation.

Abstract:The poor quality of effluent discharged by municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is threatening the safety of water ecology. This study, which integrated a field survey, batch tests, and microbial community identification, was designed to improve the effectiveness of the enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process for WWTPs. Over two-thirds of the investigated WWTPs could not achieve total P in effluent lower than 0.5 mg/L, mainly due to the high ratio of chemical oxygen demand to P (28.6–196.2) in the influent. The rates of anaerobic P release and aerobic P uptake for the activated sludge varied from 0.22 to 7.9 mg/g VSS/h and 0.43 to 8.11 mg/g VSS/h, respectively. The fraction of Accumulibacter (PAOs: polyphosphate accumulating organisms) was 4.8 ± 2.0% of the total biomass, while Competibacter (GAOs: glycogen-accumulating organisms) accounted for 4.8 ± 6.4%. The anaerobic P-release rate was found to be an effective indicator of EBPR. Four classifications of the principal components were identified to improve the EBPR effluent quality and sludge activity.
Integrating enhanced biological phosphorus removal in adsorption-stage to treat real domestic sewage

Abstract:Wastewater treatment innovation toward resource recovery facilities raises concerns about the adsorption and bio-degradation (A-B) process. This study integrated enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) into the A-stage for real domestic sewage treatment using the short sludge retention time (S-SRT) approach. The S-SRT approach resulted in outstanding phosphorus (over 90 %) and COD removal (approximately 88 %), increased sludge yield and organic matter content, and a 1.68-fold increase in energy recovery efficiency by sludge anaerobic digestion. The inhibition of nitrification relieved competition for carbon sources between denitrification and phosphorus removal, allowing for the enrichment of phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) such as Tetrasphaera and Halomonas, leading to enhanced phosphorus removal activities. Biological adsorption also plays a significant role in achieving steady phosphorus removal performance. This study demonstrates the potential of the S-SRT approach as an effective strategy for simultaneous carbon and phosphorus capture in the A-stage, contributing to energy and nutrient recovery from sewage.
Study on community structure and metabolic mechanism of dominant polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) and glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs) in suspended biofilm based on phosphate recovery

Abstract:Biofilm sequencing batch reactor (BSBR) can achieve efficient phosphate (P) removal and enrichment, but its process performance and metabolic mechanisms for P removal and enrichment of municipal wastewater remain largely unclear. In the present study, we assessed the P removal and enrichment of municipal wastewater at influent P concentrations of 2.5 mg/L and 10 mg/L. The efficiency of P removal and enzyme activity in polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) and glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs) were compared, and the growth and metabolic characteristics of dominant PAOs and GAOs at different influent P concentrations were studied with the macro-sequencing technology. The results showed that the P recovery efficiencies were 70.03% and 76.19% when the influent P concentration was 2.5 mg/L and 10 mg/L in BSBR, respectively, and the maximum P concentration of recovery liquid was 81.29 mg/L and 173.12 mg/L, respectively. There were no phosphate kinase (PPK) and phosphate hydrolase (PPX) in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The dominant PAOs were Candidatus_Contendobacter, Dechloromonas, and Flavobacterium, and the dominant GAO was Candidatus_Competibacter. The abundance of Candidatus_Contendobacter was the highest with the most potential contribution to P removal. PAOs had competitive advantages in carbon (C) source uptake, glycogen metabolism, P metabolism, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) metabolism. HMP was unique to PAOs, EMP had the highest abundance in glycogen metabolism, and ED was contained in PAOs of BSBR. These results indicated that BSBR provided sufficient reducing power and ATP for PAOs through different glycogen decomposition pathways to promote P uptake and obtained competitive advantages in P metabolism, C source uptake, and ATP utilization to achieve efficient P removal and enrichment. Collectively, our current findings provided valuable insights into the P removal and enrichment mechanism of BSBR in municipal sewage.

However, high sludge concentrations can lead to sludge loss in the secondary sedimentation tank, resulting in reduced processing capacity, particularly during low-temperature stages and sludge bulking. This study investigated the impact of adding composite micron powder carriers (CMPC) in high-concentration powder carrier biofluidized bed (HPB) technology to the biochemical units of WWTPs on sludge concentration and settling performance. For the traditional activated sludge method (ASM), its hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 8 h, with an average effluent total nitrogen (TN) of 15.14 mg/L. Sludge bulking was prone to occur in low-temperature environments, resulting in a high average sludge volume index (SVI) of 560 mL/g. Conversely, with a CMPC dosage of 4 g/L, the HRT of HPB technology was 4.8 h, and the average effluent TN was 11.40 mg/L, with a removal efficiency of 67.43 %. During operation of HPB technology under high sludge concentration conditions (8 g/L), the average SVI remained at 85 mL/g, indicating excellent settling characteristics. Moreover, in the sequencing batch reactor (SBR), the SVI value of bulking sludge decreased from the original 695 to 111 mL/g by the 9th day of operation with the CMPC dosage of 2 g/L. At the same time, the filamentous bacteria almost disappeared, suggesting that CMPC inhibit the growth of filamentous bacteria. Metagenomic analysis demonstrated that CPMC enhance the utilization of small molecular fatty acids in activated sludge and promote electron transfer between nitrate and nitrite, thereby improving wastewater treatment capacity. Additionally, CMPC enhanced the relative abundance of Saprospiraceae in sludge, which accelerate the degradation of polysaccharides in extracellular polymeric substances, weaken sludge's hydrophilic properties, and improve sludge's settling performance. Overall, these findings suggested that CMPC effectively strengthen the high-loading operation of WWTPs by improving sludge concentration and sedimentation performance.

Abstract:Dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus compounds are responsible for eutrophication and usually are treated by separate processes in wastewater treatment plants. In this study, the simultaneous, long-term, stable removal of phosphorus and nitrogen was achieved in a high-loading anammox attached film expanded bed (AAFEB) reactor. As an energy-saving and high-efficiency biological process, the anammox reaction performed stable and high nitrogen removal. In addition, the chemical environment and hydrodynamic conditions of the AAFEB system, as well as the microenvironment of the anammox granules, induced the crystallization of hydroxyapatite (HAP). As an inorganic carrier of anammox biofilms, HAP enhanced the settling velocity and shear strength of the anammox granules and thus promoted the operational stability of the AAFEB reactor. In the coupled anammox–HAP system, the nitrogen removal rate reached 44.8 g fo N/(L/day), with a stable phosphorus removal rate of 71.61 ± 6.82%. The results indicated that the coupled anammox–HAP system enhanced the nitrogen removal performance and provided a possible phosphorus recovery pathway through biomineralization processes.

Abstract:The characteristics of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process under the combined actions of intracellular and extracellular polyphosphate (polyP) were investigated with the 31P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and the fractionation extracting the loosely-bound and tightly-bound extracellular polymer substances (i.e., LB-EPS and TB-EPS) and bacterial cells in EBPR sludge. The hydrolysis/synthesis of extracellular and intracellular polyP was a key step of the phosphate migration and transformation in EBPR sludge. The orthophosphate (orthoP) produced from the intracellular and extracellular polyP anaerobic-hydrolysis was partially accumulated in the bacterial cells and TB-EPS, and then the accumulated orthoP was main composition for these polyP aerobic-synthesis. Importantly, the anaerobic-hydrolysis enhancement of intracellular and extracellular ployP could promote EBPR sludge to absorb volatile fatty acids (VFAs) followed by being transformed into intracellular poly-hydroxy-alkanoates (PHAs). The mechanism for VFAs passing through the LB-EPS and TB-EPS should be an anion-exchange action between orthoP and VFAs. The orthoP accumulation in the TB-EPS kept an orthoP concentration gradient among the TB-EPS, LB-EPS and bulk solution, driving orthoP and VFAs migrations. The orthoP accumulation in the bacterial cells could keep an orthoP concentration difference between the cell-membrane two sides of phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs) to promote VFAs passing through the cell membrane considered as an anion exchange membrane. The intracellular PHAs continuously hydrolyzed accompanied with the average chain-length increases of the extracellular and intracellular polyP during the whole aerobic stage. Additionally, the energy of the extracellular polyP synthesized in situ should came from the intracellular PHAs hydrolysis.

Abstract:In order to sustainably manage wastewater treatment plants and the environment, enhanced biological phosphorus (P) removal (EBPR) was proposed to achieve P recovery through extracting P-rich liquid (i.e., Phostrip) from the bottom of aerobic granular sludge (AGS)-based sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) under no mixing during the anaerobic phase. Results showed both tested bacterial AGS (BAGS) and algal-bacterial AGS (A-BAGS) systems stably produced low effluent P (<0.05 mg-P/L) with little impact on their organics and NH4+-N removals (>99%). The collected P-rich liquids (55-83 mg-P/L) from both systems showed great potential for P recovery of about 83.85 ± 0.57 % (BAGS) or 83.99 ± 0.77% (A-BAGS), which were contributed by the influent P (>95%) and P reserves in granules based on P balance analysis. This study suggests that the AGS-based SBRs coupling the Phostrip holds great potentials for P recovery profit and further reduction in energy consumption.
