Abstract:Experimental results show that the static toughness synthesizing both strength and plasticity of a material is a mechanical property parameter sensitive to the fatigue damage process. The reduction of the static toughness in the fatigue damage process indicates the progressive exhaustion of the ability to absorb energy inherent in the material due to fatigue damage evolution, which is associated directly with the irreversible process of energy dissipation of fatigue failure. Based on the exhaustion of the static toughness and dissipation of the plastic strain energy during fatigue failure, a damage variable that is consistent with the fatigue damage mechanism, sensitive to the fatigue damage process and can be measured with a simple experimental procedure is defined in this paper. A corresponding fatigue damage evolution equation is derived by connecting the damage variable with the static toughness exhaustion during fatigue, which is further examined in both theory and experiment. A fatigue damage accumulation formula that has the capacity of predicting the load sequencing effect correctly and can be applied very conveniently in engineering practice is further deduced by using equivalent-loading postulate. A comparison of experimental data with the predictions shows excellent agreement for two-stage cyclic tests.
A residual stiffness-based model for the fatigue damage of biological soft tissues

Abstract:<p>Biologically-derived and chemically-treated collagenous tissues such as glutaraldehyde-treated bovine pericardium (GLBP) are widely used in many medical applications. The long-term cyclic loading-induced tissue fatigue damage has been identified as one of the primary factors limiting the durability of such medical devices and an in-depth understanding of the fatigue behaviors of biological tissues is critical to increase device durability. However, a limited number of fatigue damage experiments were performed on biological tissues due to complexity and time-consuming nature of such fatigue experiments. Consequently, accurate constitutive models for fatigue damage are also lacking. In this study, we performed a rigorous fatigue experiment on GLBP tissues. The stress, strain and permanent set at a maximum of 8 different fatigue cycles, up to 15 million cycles, were obtained, which demonstrated a nonlinear stress softening and a nonlinear permanent set accumulation. Based on the experimental data, we developed a novel residual stiffness-based fatigue model. The fatigue model considers the fatigue-induced reduction of initial stiffness and stiffening effect, in contrast to our previous damage-based model that only considered the fatigue-induced reduction of the initial stiffness. Moreover, a new constitutive relation was proposed to describe how the fatigue life (the cycle number at failure) depends on the equivalent strain, analogous to the stress versus fatigue life (S-N) curve for traditional engineering material. The new fatigue model can characterize the stress softening and nonlinear permanent set effects when referring to the pre-fatigued configuration. It can also describe the nonlinear stress stiffening effect when referring to the post-fatigued configuration. The model predictions are in good agreement with the experiment. The experimental results and the novel model could be applied to fatigue analyses of medical devices to improve the durability.</p>

Abstract:Fatigue failure in biological soft tissues plays a critical role in the etiology of chronic soft tissue injuries and diseases such as osteoarthritis. Understanding failure mechanisms is hindered by the decades-long timescales over which damage takes place. Analyzing the factors contributing to fatigue failure requires the help of validated computational models developed for soft tissues. This study presents a framework for fatigue failure of fibrous biological tissues based on reaction kinetics, where the composition of intact and fatigued material regions can evolve via degradation and breakage over time, in response to energy-based fatigue and damage criteria. Using reactive constrained mixture theory, material region mass fractions are governed by the axiom of mass balance. Progression of fatigue is controlled by an energy-based reaction rate, with user-selected probability functions defining the damage propensity of intact and fatigued material regions. Verification of this reactive theory, which is implemented in the open source FEBio finite element software, is provided in this study. Validation is also demonstrated against experimental data, showing that predicted damage can be linked to results from biochemical assays. The framework is also applied to study fatigue failure during frictional contact of cartilage. Simulating previous experiments suggests that frictional effects slightly increase fatigue progression, but the main driver is cyclic compressive contact loading. This study demonstrated the ability of theoretical models to complement and extend experimental findings, advancing our understanding of the time progression of fatigue in biological tissues.
Development of a continuum damage model to predict accumulation of sub-failure damage in tendons

Abstract:Many painful and physically debilitating conditions involve sub-failure mechanical damage to seemingly intact connective tissues such as tendons and ligaments. We found that the amount of denatured collagen in rat tail tendon (RTT) fascicles increased over experiments of cyclic loading to a constant load level (creep cyclic fatigue) with fluorescently tagged collagen hybridizing peptides (CHPs) that bind to denatured collagen. To better understand tendon sub-failure damage progression, computational modeling of tendon materials via finite element analysis in FEBio has been conducted. The objective of this project was to develop, implement, and test the ability of a new continuum damage mechanics (CDM) model in FEBio to represent the sub-failure damage behavior seen in our RTT fascicle creep cyclic fatigue experimental data. There appeared to be two distinct mechanisms responsible for the creep cyclic fatigue softening behavior of RTT fascicles over the number of cycles to failure: the preconditioning effect and overall collagen damage. In our finite element (FE) models, the RTT fascicle undamaged elastic constitutive material was composed of a matrix and fibers described by the Coupled Veronda-Westmann and exponential-linear materials. This undamaged elastic material was convolved with a modified CDM model adapted from Balzani et al., in 2012. The novelty of the Balzani damage model is the inclusion of two interrelated mechanisms described as continuous and discontinuous damage. The continuous damage formulation calculates damage accumulation during the loading and reloading of each new cycle, while the discontinuous damage approach accumulates damage from the maximum strain over the loading history to the current time. We modified the Balzani damage model formulations to represent exponential and sigmoidal increases in damage marked by the preconditioning effect and collagen damage in RTT fascicles as functions of continuous and discontinuous damage. The original Balzani damage model was first verified, then the modified CDM model was implemented into FEBio and used to reproduce the sample specific experimental creep cyclic fatigue stress-strain data as well as predict incremental cyclic fatigue. The resulting model will be useful for future experimental and computational studies of damage mechanics to understand tendon pathologies.

Abstract:Based on the logarithmic rate and piecewise linearization theory, a thermodynamically consistent elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model is developed in the framework of finite deformations to describe the nonlinear time-dependent biomechanical performances of soft biological tissues, such as nonlinear anisotropic monotonic stress-strain responses, stress relaxation, creep and ratchetting. In the proposed model, the soft biological tissue is assumed as a typical composites consisting of an isotropic matrix and anisotropic fiber aggregation. Accordingly, the free energy function and stress tensor are divided into two parts related to the matrix and fiber aggregation, respectively. The nonlinear biomechanical responses of the tissues are described by the piecewise linearization theory with hypo-elastic relations of fiber aggregation. The evolution equations of viscoplasticity are formulated from the dissipation inequalities by the co-directionality hypotheses. The anisotropy is considered in the hypo-elastic relations and viscoplastic flow rules by introducing some material parameters dependent on the loading direction. Then the capability of the proposed model to describe the nonlinear time-dependent deformation of soft biological tissues is verified by comparing the predictions with the corresponding experimental results of three tissues. It is seen that the predicted monotonic stress-strain responses, stress relaxation, creep and ratchetting of soft biological tissues are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental ones.
A visco-hyperelastic-damage constitutive model for the analysis of the biomechanical response of the periodontal ligament

Abstract:The periodontal ligament (PDL), as other soft biological tissues, shows a strongly non-linear and time-dependent mechanical response and can undergo large strains under physiological loads. Therefore, the characterization of the mechanical behavior of soft tissues entails the definition of constitutive models capable of accounting for geometric and material non-linearity. The microstructural arrangement determines specific anisotropic properties. A hyperelastic anisotropic formulation is adopted as the basis for the development of constitutive models for the PDL and properly arranged for investigating the viscous and damage phenomena as well to interpret significant aspects pertaining to ordinary and degenerative conditions. Visco-hyperelastic models are used to analyze the time-dependent mechanical response, while elasto-damage models account for the stiffness and strength decrease that can develop under significant loading or degenerative conditions. Experimental testing points out that damage response is affected by the strain rate associated with loading, showing a decrease in the damage limits as the strain rate increases. These phenomena can be investigated by means of a model capable of accounting for damage phenomena in relation to viscous effects. The visco-hyperelastic-damage model developed is defined on the basis of a Helmholtz free energy function depending on the strain-damage history. In particular, a specific damage criterion is formulated in order to evaluate the influence of the strain rate on damage. The model can be implemented in a general purpose finite element code. The accuracy of the formulation is evaluated by using results of experimental tests performed on animal model, accounting for different strain rates and for strain states capable of inducing damage phenomena. The comparison shows a good agreement between numerical results and experimental data.

Abstract:Accurate and efficient evaluations of fatigue fracture is of great importance for the design and evaluation of viscoelastic materials in critical applications subject to cyclic load. In this study, an efficiency-enhanced phase-field model for viscoelastic fatigue fracture is proposed, allowing for fast evaluations of high-cycle fatigue damage. Based on the Boltzmann superposition principle, the cyclic fatigue load is decomposed into a mean load and a zero-mean cyclic load. The response of the mean load is solved numerically, while the response of the zero-mean cyclic load is solved analytically. The phase-field driving force is obtained analytically by combining the responses of the two independent parts, and the phase-field evolution is calculated numerically. In addition, both the dissipated energy and the elastic energy are decomposed using the volumetric-deviatoric decomposition to avoid unrealistic damage under the compression portion of the cyclic load. The proposed efficiency-enhanced model satisfies the energy conservation law as it does not require the fracture toughness degradation or additional fatigue energy treatments. The computational efficiency of the overall fatigue fracture can be greatly improved by leveraging the analytical solution for the response associated with the cyclic load. Numerical investigations are performed, and comparisons with the conventional cycle-by-cycle computation method are made. The results show that the proposed method can reduce the exponential computational demand to a constant or a linear one while achieving an accuracy comparable to that of the conventional method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is further demonstrated using an actual rubber component with testing data.

Abstract:Fatigue properties under cyclic static compressive loading and unloading (i.e., compressive fatigue/cyclic creep properties) have an important meaning for evaluation of lifetime in brittle solids containing numerous microcracks. The total deformation during cyclic static compression consists of time-independent elastic, time-dependent viscoelastic, time-dependent viscoplastic and time-independent plastic deformations. In this study, the viscoplastic and plastic deformations are collectively called as plastic deformation below. The plastic deformation dominates the lifetime of brittle solids. The rebound of elastic and viscoelastic deformations at static unloading is widely studied. However, the rebound of plastic deformation at static unloading is rarely studied under constant lateral confining pressure, and the total time-dependent deformation during cyclic static compressive failure also is rarely studied in theory. Furthermore, the rebound of plastic deformation has a great significance for cyclic static compressive failure, and microcrack variable influences seriously plastic mechanical properties of brittle solids. However, the theoretical relationship between plastic deformation rebound and microcrack variable in brittle solids during a cyclic static compressive failure is rarely established. In this study, an analytical solution is proposed by coupling the confined cyclic static loading and unloading path, the Hooke-Kelvin viscoelastic model and the formulated micro-macro model, which explains the total time-dependent visco-elastic-plastic deformation caused by microcracks variable during cyclic static compressive failure. Effects of residual static axial stress after unloading and confining pressure on cyclic creep failure are studied. Irreversible elastic and viscoelastic deformations caused by residual static stress after unloading are illustrated. An interesting rebound phenomenon of plastic deformation induced by microcrack recovery is found. A critical value of axial stress causing a rebound of plastic deformation is also found. Effects of parameters Delta sigma(1a), Delta sigma(1b), and Delta t in cyclic static loading and unloading path on the mechanical properties of cyclic static compressive failure are discussed. The proposed theoretical model provides a certain help for evaluation and prediction of fatigue lifetime in brittle solid engineering.
A multiscale viscoelastic fiber dispersion model for strain rate-dependent behavior of planar fibrous tissues

Abstract:Recently, we introduced an efficient discrete fiber dispersion model for characterizing the mechanical behavior of soft fibrous tissues, and we also extended that model to consider microscale collagen fiber recruitment, softening and damage. However, the viscous behavior of collagen fibers were not considered in that study. The goal of this study is to further extend the discrete fiber dispersion model to consider both elastic and viscous behavior of collagen fibers and ground substance such that the strain rate-dependent behavior of soft fibrous tissues can be characterized. We first reformulated the 3D discrete fiber dispersion model to a 2D version for tissues with planar fiber dispersion. Then, we introduced viscous parts to the model by adding Maxwell elements to the elastic parts of the strain–energy function. We implemented the proposed model in a finite element program and illustrated it with three numerical examples. The computational solutions of the first two examples agree well with our previous published results. In the last example, we characterized the rate-dependent behavior of aortic valve tissue with the proposed model. In conclusion, the proposed model is capable of characterizing the viscoelastic behavior of collagen fibers and ground substance. Future studies with patient-specific boundary conditions are necessary to verify this method.

The Discontinuous Strain Method: accurately representing fatigue and failure

Abstract:Fatigue simulation requires accurate modeling of unloading and reloading. However, classical ductile damage models treat deformations after complete failure as irrecoverable -- which leads to unphysical behavior during unloading. This unphysical behavior stems from the continued accumulation of plastic strains after failure, resulting in an incorrect stress state at crack closure. As a remedy, we introduce a discontinuity strain in the additive elasto-plastic strain decomposition, which absorbs the excess strain after failure. This allows representing pre- and post-cracking regimes in a fully continuous setting, wherein the transition from the elasto-plastic response to cracking can be triggered at any arbitrary stage in a completely smooth manner. Moreover, the presented methodology does not exhibit the spurious energy release observed in hybrid approaches. In addition, our approach guarantees mesh-independent results by relying on a characteristic length scale -- based on the discretization's resolution. We name this new methodology the discontinuous strain method. The proposed approach requires only minor modifications of conventional plastic-damage routines. To convey the method in a didactic manner, the algorithmic modifications are first discussed for one- and subsequently for two-/three-dimensional implementations. Using a simple ductile constitutive model, the discontinuous strain method is validated against established two-dimensional benchmarks. The method is, however, independent of the employed constitutive model. Elastic, plastic, and damage models may thus be chosen arbitrarily. Furthermore, computational efforts associated with the method are minimal, rendering it advantageous for accurately representing low-cycle fatigue but potentially also for other scenarios requiring a discontinuity representation within a plastic-damage framework.

This paper proposes an integrated unified elasto-viscoplastic fatigue and creep damage model with modified hardening equations to simulate the elasto-viscoplasticity, primary-secondary and tertiary creep, relaxation, cyclic softening, temperature-dependency, and creep-fatigue interaction (CFI) damage. For this purpose, we integrate the creep damage and fatigue damage model into the viscoplasticity-damage model to predict tertiary creep and cyclic softening behavior caused by creep and fatigue damage modes. Interaction effects between each damage mode are considered by the creep-fatigue interaction (CFI) damage scheme. This paper also introduces a genetic algorithm-based integrated characterization method that can effectively optimize material input parameters of the unified elasto-viscoplastic-damage material model with limited experimental data. Implicit Euler's backward iteration scheme is adopted to improve the convergence and accuracy of solutions. The proposed material model is implemented in UMAT for finite element (FE) analysis of high-temperature structures under cyclic-dwell loading. Experimental data of tensile, dwell, creep, and cyclic loading at various temperatures are used to verify the model. Finally, full-scale turbine blade FE analysis is performed under anisothermal conditions. The proposed material modeling framework can also be utilized for other high-temperature structures, such as power plants, leading-edge nose cones, etc.

Abstract:The mechanical behavior of most biological soft tissue is nonlinear viscoelastic rather than elastic. Many of the models previously proposed for soft tissue involve ad hoc systems of springs and dashpots or require measurement of time-dependent constitutive coefficient functions. The model proposed here is a system of evolution differential equations, which are determined by the long-term behavior of the material as represented by an energy function of the type used for elasticity. The necessary empirical data is time independent and therefore easier to obtain. These evolution equations, which represent non-equilibrium, transient responses such as creep, stress relaxation, or variable loading, are derived from a maximum energy dissipation principle, which supplements the second law of thermodynamics. The evolution model can represent both creep and stress relaxation, depending on the choice of control variables, because of the assumption that a unique long-term manifold exists for both processes. It succeeds, with one set of material constants, in reproducing the loading-unloading hysteresis for soft tissue. The models are thermodynamically consistent so that, given data, they may be extended to the temperature-dependent behavior of biological tissue, such as the change in temperature during uniaxial loading. The Holzapfel et al. three-dimensional two-layer elastic model for healthy artery tissue is shown to generate evolution equations by this construction for biaxial loading of a flat specimen. A simplified version of the Shah-Humphrey model for the elastodynamical behavior of a saccular aneurysm is extended to viscoelastic behavior.

Abstract:The present study is concerned with the development and implementation of a continuum damage mechanics model describing the degradation and failure of short fiber reinforced composites subjected to static and fatigue loads. Towards a numerically efficient formulation, the model is defined entirely on the macroscopic scale, although being motivated by microstructural considerations. Based on experimental observations, an anisotropic linear elastic formulation is adopted as a base formulation. The elastic model is coupled with a damage formulation assuming that damage is driven by the approach of a state point in strain space to a Tsai-Hill type failure envelope. The model is implemented as a user defined subroutine into a finite element formulation. As a numerically highly efficient alternative, an enhanced Wöhler-Miner type post-processing procedure is proposed. Both numerical approaches are found in good agreement with experimental data obtained in coupon experiments as well as in experiments on specimens with more complex geometry and loading conditions.

Abstract:Understanding the biomechanics of the heart in health and disease plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure. The use of computational biomechanical models for therapy assessment is paving the way for personalized treatment, and relies on accurate constitutive equations mapping strain to stress. Current state-of-the art constitutive equations account for the nonlinear anisotropic stress-strain response of cardiac muscle using hyperelasticity theory. While providing a solid foundation for understanding the biomechanics of heart tissue, most current laws neglect viscoelastic phenomena observed experimentally. Utilizing experimental data from human myocardium and knowledge of the hierarchical structure of heart muscle, we present a fractional nonlinear anisotropic viscoelastic constitutive model. The model is shown to replicate biaxial stretch, triaxial cyclic shear and triaxial stress relaxation experiments (mean error ∼7.68%), showing improvements compared to its hyperelastic (mean error ∼24%) counterparts. Model sensitivity, fidelity and parameter uniqueness are demonstrated. The model is also compared to rate-dependent biaxial stretch as well as different modes of biaxial stretch, illustrating extensibility of the model to a range of loading phenomena.Statement of SignificanceThe viscoelastic response of human heart tissues has yet to be integrated into common constitutive models describing cardiac mechanics. In this work, a fractional viscoelastic modeling approach is introduced based on the hierarchical structure of heart tissue. From these foundations, the current state-of-the-art biomechanical models of the heart muscle are transformed using fractional viscoelasticity, replicating passive muscle function across multiple experimental tests. Comparisons are drawn with current models to highlight the improvements of this approach and predictive responses show strong qualitative agreement with experimental data. The proposed model presents the first constitutive model aimed at capturing viscoelastic nonlinear response across multiple testing regimes, providing a platform for better understanding the biomechanics of myocardial tissue in health and disease.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the micromechanics-based phase-field model to simulate fatigue failure. The coupling of a micromechanics-based framework with the phase-field approach helps to differentiate between failure modes, by distinguishing between open and closed microcracks. This integrated framework links continuum field variables, such as plastic strain and damage variable, to micromechanical mechanisms like frictional sliding and microcrack opening. We first improve the algorithm's stability during loading-unloading in the tensile regime through a modification of the plasticity evolution equations. Next, we incorporate fatigue damage accumulation and deterioration due to cyclic loading into the micromechanics-based phase-field model. A fatigue degradation function, driven by free energy accumulation, is introduced to degrade the fracture energy upon reaching a specified threshold during cyclic loading. Various cyclic loads are applied to benchmark tests, both with and without imperfections (e.g. holes, inclusions, voids), under plane strain conditions to capture diverse failure modes. The results demonstrate the model's capability to accurately describe tensile, shear, and mixed-mode fracture under cyclic loading. Furthermore, the model effectively simulates key features of fatigue behavior, including crack nucleation, growth, and coalescence.

Abstract:In newly developed hydrogel-based devices, hydrogels are commonly used in load-bearing components subjected to prolonged cyclic deformations. The anti-fatigue capability of hydrogels is crucial for extending the service life of the devices. While recent developments in the synthesis and characterisation of tough hydrogels have facilitated continuous improvements of the fatigue resistance, the underlying mechanisms that dominate the fatigue fracture of hydrogels are still inconclusive. This work aims to model the complex constitutive response and predict the fatigue crack behaviour of hydrogels. The contribution of this work is twofold. (i) A physically-based poro-visco-hyperelastic model is developed within the framework of the Theory of Porous Media (TPM) at finite strains to describe the solid–fluid-coupled material behaviour of hydrogels. The fluid transport in hydrogels is governed by Darcy’s law. The non-equilibrium mechanical response induced by polymer chain rearrangement is considered by introducing internal variables based on a multiplicative decomposition of the solid deformation gradient tensor into elastic and inelastic parts. The time-dependent breaking/reforming kinetics of physical chains is described by a Bell model-based chain evolution law. (ii) An energy-based fatigue crack growth model is proposed to predict the fatigue crack growth of hydrogels. A volume averaging method is used to calculate the elastic energy density surrounding the crack tip as the driving force. In particular, the cyclic evolution of the averaged energy density due to the breaking/reforming kinetics of physical chains is incorporated in the crack growth model for hydrogels with physical networks. The computational results demonstrate that the predicted fatigue crack growth of different hydrogels reasonably agrees with experimental data. Moreover, the effects of fluid transport, time-dependent deformations and chain kinetics on the fatigue fracture behaviour of hydrogels are systematically analysed. The prediction results indicate that these time-dependent mechanisms cannot be ignored in modelling the fatigue behaviour of anti-fatigue hydrogels.

Abstract:The authors report 51 cases of internal communicating hydrocephalus treated by ventriculo-atrial shunt with a medium Holter valve. According to the origin of the hydrocephalus the patients are divided into three groups: 1) one group with normal pressure hydrocephalus; 2) one group with high pressure hydrocephalus associated with tumors of the CNS, and 3) one group of patients presenting a high pressure hydrocephalus after a severe craniocerebral injury. Different tests have been employed; their results are presented and discussed. The post-operative evolution of these groups are analysed and some conclusions are drawn.

Abstract:Soft adhesives exhibit nonlinear viscoelastic behavior during cyclic loading, suggesting that their cycle-dependent fatigue behavior can be significantly affected by the time-dependent deformation behavior. Soft adhesives are frequently subject to various cyclic conditions in practical applications, presenting potential safety risks. This paper has proposed a fractional cyclic cohesive zone model (CZM) to characterize the time-dependent fatigue behavior of soft adhesives. To capture the nonlinear evolution of fatigue damage under asymmetric stress-controlled cyclic loading, a fatigue damage model that considers the contribution of in-situ stress/strain was incorporated into fractional-order viscoelastic model. The proposed CZM was validated through single-lap shear creep tests at various stress levels and fatigue tests at various stress amplitudes and loading periods. Furthermore, the impacts of stress ratio and peak stress level on fatigue failure under different loading periods were investigated using the proposed CZM. The results indicate that under a short loading period, the failure of the soft adhesives is primarily influenced by cycle-dependent fatigue damage, while under a long loading period, it is primarily affected by time-dependent creep deformation. Overall, this work offers a numerical strategy to describe the fatigue failure of nonlinear viscoelastic soft adhesives and to understand their time-dependent fatigue failure mechanism, with implications for product design and optimization.

Abstract:The hyperelasticity of soft biological tissues such as tendons and ligaments is closely related to their microstructures consisting of wavy fibers embedded in a soft matrix. Large deformation of such composites involves both microstructural evolution and material nonlinearity, posing a challenge of theoretical analysis. In this paper, we propose a finite-strain micromechanical method to predict the hyperelastic constitutive relation of tendons and ligaments reinforced with crimped fibers. The Mori–Tanaka method is extended to account for the interaction of wavy fibers embedded in a soft matrix under large deformation. It is found that the tension–shear coupling mechanism induced by fiber–matrix interaction is crucial for the nonlinear behavior of tendons and ligaments. The hyperelasticity of such composites relies strongly on the initial crimp shape, Young's modulus, and volume fraction of fibers. This model is validated by finite element simulations of a unit cell model with crimped fibers. Furthermore, an explicit expression based on dimensional analysis is derived for the hyperelastic constitutive relation in terms of microstructural and material parameters, and it fits well with experimental data of tendons at different ages. This study can not only deepen the understanding of the mechanical behaviors of such soft tissues of tendons and ligaments, but also help the optimal design of biomimetic composites with superior elasticity.
