Abstract:Deep Geological Repositories (DGRs) consist of radioactive waste contained in corrosion-resistant canisters, surrounded by compacted bentonite clay, and buried few hundred meters in a stable geological formation. The effects of bentonite microbial communities on the long-term stability of the repository should be assessed. This study explores the impact of harsh conditions (60 °C, highly-compacted bentonite, low water activity), and acetate:lactate:sulfate addition, on the evolution of microbial communities, and their effect on the bentonite mineralogy, and corrosion of copper material under anoxic conditions. No bentonite illitization was observed in the treatments, confirming its mineralogical stability as an effective barrier for future DGR. Anoxic incubation at 60 °C reduced the microbial diversity, with Pseudomonas as the dominant genus. Culture-dependent methods showed survival and viability at 60 °C of moderate-thermophilic aerobic bacterial isolates (e.g., Aeribacillus ). Despite the low presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria in the bentonite blocks, we proved their survival at 30 °C but not at 60 °C. Copper disk's surface remained visually unaltered. However, in the acetate:lactate:sulfate-treated samples, sulfide/sulfate signals were detected, along with microbial-related compounds. These findings offer new insights into the impact of high temperatures (60 °C) on the biogeochemical processes at the compacted bentonite/Cu canister interface post-repository closure.

Stability of Microbial Community Profiles Associated with Compacted Bentonite from the Grimsel Underground Research Laboratory

Abstract:To assess the microbiology and corrosion potential of engineered components of a deep geological repository for long-term storage of high-level nuclear waste, the Materials Corrosion Test is being conducted at the Underground Research Laboratory in Grimsel, Switzerland. Modules containing metal coupons surrounded by highly compacted MX-80 bentonite, at two dry densities (1.25 and 1.50 g/cm3), were emplaced within 9-m-deep boreholes, and the first modules were retrieved after 13 months of exposure. Bentonite and associated module materials were sampled, and microbial communities and their distributions were assessed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. Borehole fluid was dominated by amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) affiliated with Desulfosporosinus and Desulfovibrio, which are putatively involved in sulfate reduction. The relative abundance of these ASVs was lower for samples from inside the borehole module, and they were almost undetectable in samples of the inner bentonite layer. The dominant ASV in case and filter sample sequence data was affiliated with Pseudomonas stutzeri, yet its relative abundance decreased in the inner layer samples. Streptomyces sp. ASVs were relatively abundant in all bentonite core sample data both prior to emplacement and after 13 months of exposure, presumably as metabolically inactive spores or extracellular "relic" DNA. PLFA concentrations in outer and inner layer bentonite samples suggested cellular abundances of 1 × 106 to 3 × 106 cells/g, with similar PLFA distributions within all bentonite samples. Our results demonstrate consistent microbial communities inside the saturated borehole module, providing the first evidence for microbial stability under conditions that mimic a deep geological repository.IMPORTANCE The Materials Corrosion Test in Grimsel Underground Research Laboratory, Switzerland, enables an evaluation of microbiological implications of bentonite clay at densities relevant for a deep geological repository. Our research demonstrates that after 13 months of exposure within a granitic host rock, the microbial 16S rRNA gene signatures of saturated bentonite clay within the modules were consistent with the profiles in the original clay used to pack the modules. Such results provide evidence that densities chosen for this emplacement test are refractory to microbial activity, at least on the relatively short time frame leading to the first time point sampling event, which will help inform in situ engineered barrier system science. This study has important implications for the design of deep geological repository sites under consideration for the Canadian Shield.

Abstract:Uranium (U) represents the preeminent hazardous radionuclide within the context of nuclear waste repositories. Indigenous microorganisms in bentonite can influence radionuclide speciation and migration in Deep Geological Repositories (DGRs) for nuclear waste storage. While bacterial communities in bentonite samples have been extensively studied, the impact of fungi has been somewhat overlooked. Here, we investigate the geomicrobiological processes in bentonite microcosms amended with uranyl nitrate and glycerol-2-phosphate (G2P) for six-month incubation. ITS sequencing revealed that the fungal community was mainly composed of Ascomycota (96.6 %). The presence of U in microcosms enriched specific fungal taxa, such as Penicillium and Fusarium, potentially associated with uranium immobilization mechanisms. Conversely, the amendment of U into G2P-suplemented samples exhibited minimal impact, resulting in a fungal community akin to the control group. Several fungal strains were isolated from bentonite microcosms to explore their potential in the U biomineralization, including Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus sp., Penicillium spp., among others. High Annular Angle Dark-Field Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (HAADF) analyses showed the capacity of F. oxysporum B1 to form U-phosphate mineral phases, likely mediated by phosphatase activity. Therefore, our study emphasizes the need to take into account indigenous bentonite fungi in the overall assessment of the impact of microbial processes in the immobilization of U within DGRs environments.

Abstract:Deep geological repositories (DGRs) stand out as one of the optimal options for managing high-level radioactive waste (HLW) such as uranium (U) in the near future. Here, we provide novel insights into microbial behavior in the DGR bentonite barrier, addressing potential worst-case scenarios such as waste leakage (e.g., U) and groundwater infiltration of electron rich donors in the bentonite. After a three-year anaerobic incubation, Illumina sequencing results revealed a bacterial diversity dominated by anaerobic and spore-forming microorganisms mainly from the phylum Firmicutes. Highly U tolerant and viable bacterial isolates from the genera Peribacillus, Bacillus, and some SRB such as Desulfovibrio and Desulfosporosinus, were enriched from U-amended bentonite. The results obtained by XPS and XRD showed that U was present as U(VI) and as U(IV) species. Regarding U(VI), we have identified biogenic U(VI) phosphates, U(UO2)·(PO4)2, located in the inner part of the bacterial cell membranes in addition to U(VI)-adsorbed to clays such as montmorillonite. Biogenic U(IV) species as uraninite may be produced as result of bacterial enzymatic U(VI) reduction. These findings suggest that under electron donor-rich water-saturation conditions, bentonite microbial community can control U speciation, immobilizing it, and thus enhancing future DGR safety if container rupture and waste leakage occurs.
Nitrification and denitrification in partially aerated biological aerated filter (BAF) with dual size sand media.

Abstract:A 104-mm (4-inch) diameter pilot-scale biological aerated filter (BAF) with a media depth of 2.5 m (8.3 feet) was operated with an anaerobic, anoxic and oxic zone at a temperature of 23 degrees C. The medium for the anaerobic and anoxic zones was 10 mm diameter sand while the medium for the oxic zone was 5 mm diameter sand. The influent sCOD and total nitrogen concentrations in the feedwater were approximately 250 mg/L and 35 mg N/L, respectively. sCOD removal at optimum hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3 h with recirculation rates of 100, 200 and 300% in the column was above 96%. Nitrification was found to be more than 96% for 3 h HRT at 200 and 300% recirculation. Total nitrogen removal was consistent at more than 80% for 4 and 6 h HRT at 300% recirculation. For 3 h HRT and 300% recirculation, total nitrogen removal was approximately 79%. The ammonia loading rates for maximum ammonia removed were 0.15 and 0.19 kg NH3-N/m3-day for 100 and 200% recirculation, respectively. The experimental results demonstrated that the BAF can be operated at an HRT of 3h with 200-300% recirculation rates with more than 96% removal of sCOD and ammonia and at least 75% removal of total nitrogen.
No signs of microbial-influenced corrosion of cast iron and copper in bentonite microcosms after 400 days

Abstract:High-level radioactive waste needs to be safely stored for a long time in a deep geological repository by using a multi-barrier system. In this system, suitable barrier materials are selected that ideally show long-term stability to prevent early radionuclide release into the biosphere. In this study, different container matals (copper and cast iron) and pore water compositions (Opalinus Clay pore water and saline cap rock solution) were combined with Bavarian bentonite in static batch experiments to investigate microbial-influenced corrosion. The increasing concentration of iron and copper in the solution as well as detected corrosion products on the metal surface are indicative of anaerobic corrosion of the respective metals during an incubation of 400 days at 37 °C. However, although the intrinsic microbial bentonite community was stimulated with either lactate or H2, an acceleration of cast iron- and copper corrosion did not occur. Furthermore, neither corrosive bacteria nor conventional bacterial corrosion products, such as metal sulfides, were detected in any of the analyzed samples. The analyses of geochemical parameters (e.g. ferrous iron-, iron-, copper- and potassium concentrations as well as redox potentials) showed significant changes in some cast iron- and copper-containing setups, but these changes did not correlate with the microbial community structure in the respective microcosms, as confirmed by statistical analyses. Hence, the analyzed Bavarian bentonite (type B25) showed no significant contribution to cast iron and copper corrosion under the applied conditions after 400 days of incubation. From this perspective, bentonite B25 could be a suitable candidate as a geotechnical barrier in future repositories.

Abstract:Selenium, 79Se, is one of the most critical radionuclides in radioactive waste disposed in future deep geological repositories (DGRs). Here, we investigate the impact of bentonite microbial communities on the allotropic transformation of Se(IV) bioreduction products under DGR relevant conditions. In addition, Se amendment-dependent shifts in the bentonite microbial populations are assessed. Microcosms of water-saturated bentonites were spiked with a bacterial consortium, treated with selenite and incubated anaerobically for six months. A combination of X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy, Electron Microscopy, and Raman Spectroscopy was used to track the allotropic changes of the Se bioreduction products. Interestingly, the color of bentonite shifted from orange to black in the selenite-treated microcosms. In the orange layers, amorphous or monoclinic Se(0) were identified, whilst black precipitates consisted of stable trigonal Se(0) form. Illumina DNA sequencing indicated the distribution of strains with Se(IV) reducing and Se(0) allotropic biotransformation potential, like Pseudomonas, Stenotrophomonas, Desulfosporosinus, and unclassified-Desulfuromonadaceae. The archaea Methanosarcina decreased its abundance in the presence of Se(IV), probably caused by this oxyanion toxicity. These findings provide an understanding of the bentonite microbial strategies involved in the immobilization of Se(IV) by reduction processes, and prove their implication in the allotropic biotransformation from amorphous to trigonal Se(0) under DGR relevant conditions.
Growth and Persistence of an Aerobic Microbial Community in Wyoming Bentonite MX-80 Despite Anoxic in situ Conditions

Abstract:Microbial activity has the potential to enhance the corrosion of high-level radioactive waste disposal canisters, which, in the proposed Swiss deep geological repository, will be embedded in bentonite and placed in the Opalinus Clay (OPA) rock formation. A total of 12 stainless steel cylindrical vessels (referred to as modules) containing bentonite were deployed in an anoxic borehole in OPA for up to 5.5 years. Carbon steel coupons were embedded in the bentonite. Individual modules were retrieved after 1, 1.5, 2.5, and 5.5 years. Enumeration of aerobic and anaerobic heterotrophs and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) revealed microbial growth for 1.5 years followed by a decline or stagnation in microbial viability. It was surprising to observe the growth of aerobic heterotrophs followed by their persistent viability in bentonite, despite the nominally anoxic conditions. In contrast, SRB numbers remained at very low levels. DNA-based amplicon sequencing confirmed the persistence of aerobes and the relatively low contribution of anaerobes to the bentonite microbiome. Bentonite dry density, in situ exposure time, and bioavailable trapped oxygen are observed to shape the bentonite microbial community in the clay.

Abstract:Research on eco-friendly bioremediation strategies for mitigating the environmental impact of toxic metals has gained attention in the last years. Among all promising solutions, bentonite clays, to be used as artificial barriers to isolate radioactive wastes within the deep geological repository (DGR) concept, have emerged as effective reservoir of microorganisms with remarkable bioremediation potential. The present study aims to investigate the impact of bentonite fungi in the speciation and mobility of selenium (Se) and tellurium (Te), as natural analogues 79Se and 132Te present in radioactive waste, to screen for those strains with bioremediation potential within the context of DGR. For this purpose, a multidisciplinary approach combining microbiology, biochemistry, and microscopy was performed. Notably, Aspergillus sp. 3A demonstrated a high tolerance to Te(IV) and Se(IV), as evidenced by minimal inhibitory concentrations of >16 and >32 mM, respectively, along with high tolerance indexes. The high metalloid tolerance of Aspergillus sp. 3A is mediated by its capability to reduce these mobile and toxic elements to their elemental less soluble forms [Te(0) and Se(0)], forming nanostructures of various morphologies. Advanced electron microscopy techniques revealed intracellular Te(0) manifesting as amorphous needle-like nanoparticles and extracellular Te(0) forming substantial microspheres and irregular accumulations, characterized by a trigonal crystalline phase. Similarly, Se(0) exhibited a diverse array of morphologies, including hexagonal, irregular, and needle-shaped structures, accompanied by a monoclinic crystalline phase. The formation of less mobile Te(0) and Se(0) nanostructures through novel and environmentally friendly processes by Aspergillus sp. 3A suggests it would be an excellent candidate for bioremediation in contaminated environments, such as the vicinity of deep geological repositories. It moreover holds immense potential for the recovery and synthesis of Te and Se nanostructures for use in numerous biotechnological and biomedical applications.
Effect of compaction on bisulfide diffusive transport through MX-80 bentonite

Abstract:Canada's deep geological repository (DGR) design includes an engineered barrier system where highly compacted bentonite (HCB) surrounds the copper-coated used fuel containers (UFCs). Microbial-influenced corrosion is a potential threat to long-term integrity of UFC as bisulfide (HS-) may be produced by microbial activities under anaerobic conditions and transported via diffusion through the HCB to reach the UFC surface, resulting in corrosion of copper. Therefore, understanding HS- transport mechanisms through HCB is critical for accurate prediction of copper corrosion allowance. This study investigated HS- transport behaviour through MX-80 bentonite at dry densities 1070-1615 kg m-3 by performing through-diffusion experiments. Following HS- diffusion, bromide (Br-) diffusion and Raman spectroscopy analyses were performed to explore possible physical or mineralogical alterations of bentonite caused by interacting with HS-. In addition, accessible porosity ε was estimated using extended Archie's law. Effective diffusion coefficient of HS- was found 2.5 × 10-12 m2 s-1 and 5.0× 10-12 m2 s-1 for dry densities 1330 and 1070 kg m-3, respectively. No HS- breakthrough was observed for highly compacted bentonite (1535-1615 kg m-3) over the experimental timeframe (170 days). Raman spectroscopy results revealed that HS- reacted with iron in bentonite and precipitated as mackinawite and, therefore, it was immobilized. Finally, results of this study imply that HS- transport towards UFC will be highly controlled by the available iron content and dry density of the buffer material.

Safety of Nuclear Waste Disposal

Abstract:Abstract. The safe disposal of high-level radioactive waste represents a major scientific and societal challenge. In addition to geological, geochemical and geophysical properties of such a repository, the influence of naturally occurring microorganisms from deep geological layers has to be taken into account for a comprehensive safeguard concept. Various sulfate- and iron-reducing bacteria are present in different clay formations, which can serve as a potential host rock for the long-term disposal of the waste, as well as in the backfill material bentonite. In the event of a worst-case scenario, if water enters the repository, those microorganisms can interact with the waste and change, for example, the oxidation state or the chemical speciation, which can influence the mobility of the radionuclides. In this study, the reduction of highly mobile, water-soluble U(VI) to less mobile U(IV) by the iron-reducing microorganism Desulfitobacterium sp. G1-2 and the sulfate reducer Desulfosporosinus hippei DSM 8344T were investigated. Desulfitobacterium sp. G1-2 has been isolated from a bentonite sample, and Desulfosporosinus hippei DSM 8344T represents a genus of sulfate-reducing bacteria present in clay rock and bentonite. During time-dependent experiments in a bicarbonate buffer (30 mM, 100/550 μM U(VI)), Desulfitobacterium sp. G1-2 showed a removal of up to 80 % of U within 5 d, whereas samples of Desulfosporosinus hippei DSM 8344T showed no decrease in U concentrations over time. Therefore, experiments were carried out in artificial Opalinus Clay pore water with this bacterium (100 μM U(VI), pH 5.5). In this case, the U concentration showed a decrease of up to 80 % of the radionuclide from the supernatants within 48 h. UV–Vis studies of dissolved cell pellets of both bacteria after U incubation showed an almost complete reduction to U(IV) for Desulfitobacterium sp. G1-2. On the other hand, samples of Desulfosporosinus hippei DSM 8344T exhibited only a partial reduction. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis revealed the release of membrane vesicles from cells of Desulfosporosinus hippei DSM 8344T as a possible defense reaction against cell incrustation. Furthermore, TEM images of Desulfitobacterium sp. G1-2 cells showed the presence of two different U-containing aggregates inside the cells. These investigations showed clear differences in the reduction behavior of sulfate- and iron-reducing bacteria relevant to nuclear waste disposal. This highlights the importance of studies on the U(VI) interactions of different microorganisms present in deep geological layers. Moreover, new aspects for a safety concept for a nuclear repository in clay formations and for final disposal sites using bentonite as backfill material could be revealed.

Abstract:In a deep geological disposal system, bentonite buffer material is an important barrier used to protect the disposal canister from the inflow of groundwater and prevent the outflow of radionuclides. This study aimed to characterize the mineralogical and chemical reactions of bentonite caused by copper corrosion of the canister in a radioactive waste repository. We investigated the d-spacings of montmorillonite in Gyeongju bentonite (Ca-type, KJ-I) under groundwater-saturated conditions over 10 years and compared their characteristics with those of Wyoming bentonite (Na-type, MX-80) in the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute Underground Research Tunnel. Mineralogical investigations using X-ray diffraction and focused ion beam energy-dispersive spectroscopy indicated that no transformation of smectite or neo-formed clay phases occurred. In the Ca-type bentonite (KJ-I), the swelling was observed when it was in contact with rolled plate (RP) and cold-spray-coated (CSC) copper, with d-spacing expansions of 2.9% and 3.8%, respectively. In contrast, the Na-type bentonite (MX-80) showed d-spacing expansions of 17.6% and 19.6% when it was in contact with the RP and CSC Cu, respectively. The Cu concentration and distribution indicated that the corrosion products dissolved and then diffused into the surrounding bentonite, with maximum penetration depths of 2.0 and 0.5 mm over 10 years, respectively.

Safety of Nuclear Waste Disposal

Abstract:Abstract. The geological disposal in deep bedrock repositories is the preferred option for the management of high-level radioactive waste. In some of these concepts, carbon steel is considered as potential canister material and bentonites are planned as backfill material to protect metal waste containers. Therefore, a 1D radial reactive transport model has been developed in order to better understand the processes occurring during the long-term iron–bentonite interaction. The conceptual model accounts for diffusion, chemistry of the porewater and aqueous complexation reactions, mineral dissolution/precipitation and absorption, at a constant temperature of 25 ∘C under anoxic conditions. The geometry of the axisymmetric model reflects the canister–bentonite interface and the bentonite. The primary phases considered are montmorillonitic smectite, quartz, muscovite, albite, illite, pyrite and calcite. We assume that carbon steel is composed only of iron. The potential secondary phases considered are from reported experiments, such as magnetite, nontronitic smectite, greenalite, cronstedtite and siderite. The numerical model results suggest that at the iron–bentonite interface, Fe is adsorbed at the smectite surface via ion exchange in the short term and it is consumed by formation of the secondary phases in the long term. Furthermore, calcite precipitates are due to cation exchange in the short term and due to montmorillonitic smectite dissolution in the long term. The numerical model predicts the precipitation of nontronitic smectite, magnetite and greenalite as corrosion products. Results further reveal a significant increase in pH in the long term, whereas dissolution/precipitation reactions result in limited variations of the porosity. Progressing bentonite dissolution owing to the rising pH and concomitantly increasing silicate concentrations in the porewater induce formation of Fe-silicates as corrosion products at the expense of magnetite. A sensitivity analysis has also been performed to study the effect of selected parameters, such as corrosion rate, diffusion coefficient and composition of the porewater, on the corrosion products. Overall, outcomes suggest that pH and concentration of dissolved Si play an important role in corrosion mechanisms. The predicted main secondary phases in the long term are Fe-silicate minerals. Thus, such phases deserve further attention as possible chemical barriers for radionuclide migration in the repository near-field.

Abstract:Compacted bentonite–sand mixtures are commonly considered as the key materials for the construction of engineered barrier systems (EBSs) in deep geological repositories (DGRs) in Canada and other countries. These bentonite-based barriers can be simultaneously exposed to a wide range of chemical and thermal (nuclear waste heat decay) conditions of underground water. Thus, an understanding of the effects of groundwater chemistry and temperature and their interactions on the changes in the swelling properties as well as the microstructure of bentonite-based barriers is essential for assessing the durability and safety of an EBS in a DGR. This study experimentally investigates the impact of a Canadian deep underground water chemistry (C; total dissolved solids up to 300 g/L), temperature (T; 23 °C, 40 °C, and 80 °C), and the coupled effects of C and T on the swelling properties and microstructure of bentonite–sand barrier mixtures (30 to 70% by weight). The results show that the groundwater chemistry of southwestern Ontario (Canada) has a significant impact on the swelling characteristics of the examined bentonite–sand material. The swelling ability significantly decreases with respect to the groundwater chemistry. The mineralogical composition of the bentonite changes. Most of the Na-montmorillonite is mainly transformed to Ca-montmorillonite and traces of illite with a lower swelling capacity when the bentonite–sand barrier material is exposed mixed to saline water solutions. The temperature (alone) has a limited effect. However, the temperature–groundwater chemistry interactions significantly affect the swelling capacity of the studied bentonite–sand material. Future safety assessments and the final engineering design of engineered barriers for DGRs in Ontario should take into consideration the possibility of the long-term deterioration of bentonite–sand barriers from chemical attacks and/or thermochemical attacks induced by the high salinity of the groundwater and by simultaneous impact of the chemistry of the groundwater and the heat generated by the nuclear wastes, respectively.

Abstract:The activity of subsurface microorganisms can be harnessed for engineering projects. For instance, the Swiss radioactive waste repository design can take advantage of indigenous microorganisms to tackle the issue of a hydrogen gas (H2) phase pressure build-up. After repository closure, it is expected that anoxic steel corrosion of waste canisters will lead to an H2 accumulation. This occurrence should be avoided to preclude damage to the structural integrity of the host rock. In the Swiss design, the repository access galleries will be back-filled, and the choice of this material provides an opportunity to select conditions for the microbially-mediated removal of excess gas. Here, we investigate the microbial sinks for H2. Four reactors containing an 80/20 (w/w) mixture of quartz sand and Wyoming bentonite were supplied with natural sulfate-rich Opalinus Clay rock porewater and with pure H2 gas for up to 108 days. Within 14 days, a decrease in the sulfate concentration was observed, indicating the activity of the sulfate-reducing bacteria detected in the reactor, e.g., from Desulfocurvibacter genus. Additionally, starting at day 28, methane was detected in the gas phase, suggesting the activity of methanogens present in the solid phase, such as the Methanosarcina genus. This work evidences the development, under in-situ relevant conditions, of a backfill microbiome capable of consuming H2 and demonstrates its potential to contribute positively to the long-term safety of a radioactive waste repository.

Abstract:Currently, the deep geological repository approach for spent nuclear fuel is regarded as the most dependable and secure method for permanently disposing of this kind of waste. Among its key safety components is an engineered barrier made from compacted bentonite, which isolates the encapsulated waste from the surrounding host rock. As a result, understanding how bentonites react to varying compositions of groundwater is crucial. This is where numerical modelling becomes essential. It is generally approved by the scientific community to idealise bentonite as a material structured under a double porosity system composed of the macro and microstructure. In this context, this paper illustrates the capabilities of a double-porosity reactive transport model for bentonites fully implemented in the multiphysics COMSOL platform. For this purpose, different experimental tests were simulated based on the evaluation of diffusive ion transport, mineral dissolution and cation exchange processes in MX-80 bentonite, obtaining very satisfactory results.

Abstract:The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is developing a Deep Geological Repository (DGR) to contain and isolate used nuclear fuel in a suitable rock formation at a depth of approximately 500m. The design concept employs a multibarrier system, including the use of copper-coated used fuel containers, surrounded by a low-permeability, swelling clay buffer material within a low permeability, stable host rock environment. The natural organic matter (NOM) composition of the bentonite clays being considered for the buffer material is largely uncharacterized at the molecular-level. To gain a better understanding of the NOM in target clays from Wyoming and Saskatchewan, molecular-level methods (biomarker analysis, solid-state 13C NMR and solution-state 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)) were used to elucidate the structure and sources of NOM. Organic carbon content in three commercially available bentonites analyzed was low (0.11–0.41%). The aliphatic lipid distribution of the clay samples analyzed showed a predominance of higher concentration of lipids from vascular plants and low concentrations of lipids consistent with microbial origin. The lignin phenol vanillyl acid to aldehyde ratio (Ad/Al) for the National sample indicated an advanced state of lignin oxidation and NOM diagenesis. The 13C NMR spectra were dominated by signals in the aromatic and aliphatic regions. The ratio of alkyl/O-alkyl carbon ranged from 7.6 to 9.7, indicating that the NOM has undergone advanced diagenetic alteration. The absence lignin-derived phenols commonly observed in CuO oxidation extracts from contemporary soils and sediments as well as the lack of amino acids suggests that the material corresponding to the aromatic signal is not composed of lignin or proteins but may be derived from another source such as black carbon or some other non-extractable aromatic-rich NOM. The aliphatic signal appears to correspond to long-chain compounds with little side branching based on the results of the one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) solution-state 1H NMR analyses. Overall, the organic geochemical analyses suggest that the NOM is composed mainly of plant-derived waxes and highly aromatic carbon with low contributions from small molecules. The compounds identified by the molecular-level analysis of NOM in the clay samples are hypothesized to be recalcitrant but future studies should examine if these compounds may serve as a microbial substrate to further test the observations of this study. Furthermore, our study suggests that the NOM has undergone diagenesis and that marine NOM signatures are no longer recognizable or detectable. As such, future work may also examine the diagenesis of these deposits to further understand the NOM geochemistry and paleoenvironmental conditions in bentonite deposits.

Abstract:Buffer/backfill material in engineered barrier plays an important role in preventing leakage and migrating high-level radioactive nuclear waste (HLW) in geological repository. GMZ bentonite has been proposed as prior buffer/backfill material to be applied in HLW geological repository in China. It is crucial to have a better understanding of the geotechnical properties of this material for optimizing the design and ensuring the long-term stability of the repository. In this paper, the research progress on the geotechnical properties of GMZ bentonite was summarized, including hydraulic conductivity, water retention capacity, thermal physical properties, swelling properties, microstructure, compressibility, multi-fields coupling behavior and long-term characteristics. The following findings are obtained: (1) The basic geotechnical properties of GMZ bentonite are significantly related to the thermal, hydraulic and mechanical boundary conditions, which can be characterized by complex coupling of multi-phase and multi-field; (2) on the premise of meeting the basic requirements of engineered barrier, adding quartz sand and other additives to GMZ bentonite is a currently available and feasible way to improve the geotechnical properties of GMZ bentonite; (3) the observed volumetric deformation and mechanical behavior of GMZ bentonite and mixture under thermal, hydraulic, mechanical and chemical boundary conditions significantly depend on its compaction conditions, relative montmorillonite content and microstructure characteristics; (4) the current researches on GMZ bentonite are mainly limited by traditional laboratory small-scale tests under single-field and single boundary conditions in obtaining single parameter. However, there is still a gap between the simulated environmental conditions in the tests and the real environmental conditions in geological repository. Based on the above understanding and current research shortages in this field, some important research topics were proposed for future work, including multi-field/phase/component coupling characteristics and the mechanisms, long-term performance, large-scale model tests, underground in situ tests, numerical modeling and the constitutive modeling of GMZ bentonite under complex boundary conditions.

Abstract:In the context of deep geological disposal of radioactive waste in clay formations, the thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behavior of the indurated Callovo-Oxfordian and Opalinus clay rocks has been extensively investigated in our laboratory under repository relevant conditions: (1) rock stress covering the range from the lithostatic state to redistributed levels after excavation; (2) variation of the humidity in the openings due to ventilation as well as hydraulic drained and undrained boundary conditions; (3) gas generation from corrosion of metallic components within repositories; and (4) thermal loading from high-level radioactive waste up to the designed maximum temperature of 90 °C and even beyond to 150 °C. Various important aspects concerning the long-term barrier functions of the clay host rocks have been studied: (1) fundamental concept for effective stress in the porous clay-water system; (2) stress-driven deformation and damage as well as resulting permeability changes; (3) moisture influences on mechanical properties; (4) self-sealing of fractures under mechanical load and swelling/slaking of clay minerals upon water uptake; (5) gas migration in fractured and resealed claystones; and (6) thermal impact on the hydro-mechanical behavior and properties. Major findings from the investigations are summarized in this paper.
