Abstract:Increasing concerns regarding environmental impacts of animal production require a better understanding of the factors that influence nitrogen (N) excretion by animals and the processes that influence N volatilization into ammonia (NH3) and nitrous oxide (N2O) from manure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of diet characteristics and climatic factors on manure composition, as well as the resulting NH3 and N2O emissions in the barn and during storage of a straw-based litter system. Two groups of three dairy cows were housed in mechanically ventilated rooms and fed with a grass-based diet (GD) or a total mixed diet (MD). The resulting solid manures were stored in ventilated tunnels. The experiment was conducted in autumn (AUT) and spring (SPR). NH3 and N2O emissions were recorded continuously (28 days in the barn, 85 days for storage). NH3–N emissions in the barn were higher for GD-AUT than for MD-AUT, which was consistent with the larger and unbalanced amount of crude and degradable protein in GD, and corroborated by higher milk urea N contents. More than 80% of the NH3–N volatilization occurred during the first week of manure storage, when the temperature of the manure heap peaked. N2O–N emissions were negligible in the barn. During storage, N2O–N emissions peaked immediately after the first week. Higher N2O–N emissions were related to higher rainfall, which may have increased the moisture content and decreased the temperature of the manure heap, thus generating the conditions necessary for nitrification and denitrification processes.

Abstract:Feed management decisions are crucial in mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) and nitrogen (N) emissions from ruminant farming systems. However, assessing the downstream impact of diet on emissions in dairy production systems is complex, due to the multifunctional relationships between a variety of distinct but interconnected sources such as animals, housing, manure storage, and soil. Therefore, there is a need for an integral assessment of the direct and indirect GHG and N emissions that considers the underlying processes of carbon (C), N and their drivers within the system. Here we show the relevance of using a cascade of process-based (PB) models, such as Dutch Tier 3 and (Manure)-DNDC (Denitrification-Decomposition) models, for capturing the downstream influence of diet on whole-farm emissions in two contrasting case study dairy farms: a confinement system in Germany and a pasture-based system in New Zealand. Considerable variation was found in emissions on a per hectare and per head basis, and across different farm components and categories of animals. Moreover, the confinement system had a farm C emission of 1.01 kg CO2-eq kg-1 fat and protein corrected milk (FPCM), and a farm N emission of 0.0300 kg N kg-1 FPCM. In contrast, the pasture-based system had a lower farm C and N emission averaging 0.82 kg CO2-eq kg-1 FPCM and 0.006 kg N kg-1 FPCM, respectively over the 4-year period. The results demonstrate how inputs and outputs could be made compatible and exchangeable across the PB models for quantifying dietary effects on whole-farm GHG and N emissions.

Abstract:The objectives were to investigate the effect of feeding and visiting behavior of dairy cattle on CH4 and H2 production measured with voluntary visits to the GreenFeed system (GF) and to determine whether these effects depended on basal diet (BD) and 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP) supplementation. The experiment involved 64 lactating dairy cattle (146 ± 45 d in milk at the start of trial; mean ± SD) in 2 overlapping crossover trials, each consisting of 2 measurement periods. Cows within block were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 types of BD: a grass silage-based diet consisting of 30% concentrates and 70% grass silage (DM basis), a grass silage- and corn silage-mixed diet consisting of 30% concentrates, 42% grass silage, and 28% corn silage (DM basis), or a corn silage-based diet consisting of 30% concentrates, 14% grass silage, and 56% corn silage (DM basis). Each type of BD was subsequently supplemented with 0 and 60 mg 3-NOP/kg DM in one crossover, or 0 and 80 mg 3-NOP/kg DM in the other crossover. Diets were provided in feed bins which automatically recorded feed intake and feeding behavior, with additional concentrate fed in the GF. All visits to the GF that resulted in a spot measurement of both CH4 and H2 emission were analyzed in relation to feeding behavior (e.g., meal size and time interval to preceding meal) as well as GF visiting behavior (e.g., duration of visit). Feeding and GF visiting behavior was related to CH4 and H2 production measured with the GF, in particular the meal size before a GF measurement and the time interval between a GF measurement and the preceding meal. Relationships between gas production and both feeding and GF visiting behavior were affected both by type of BD and 3-NOP supplementation. With an increase of the time interval between a GF measurement and the preceding meal, CH4 production decreased with 0 mg 3-NOP/kg DM but increased with 60 and 80 mg 3-NOP/kg DM, whereas type of BD did not affect these relationships. In contrast, CH4 production increased with 0 mg 3-NOP/kg DM but decreased with 60 and 80 mg 3-NOP/kg DM upon an increase in the size of the meal preceding a GF measurement. With an increase of the time interval between a GF measurement and the preceding meal, or with a decrease of the size of the meal preceding a GF measurement, H2 production decreased for all treatments, although the effect was generally somewhat stronger for 60 and 80 mg 3-NOP/kg DM than for 0 mg 3-NOP/kg DM. Hence, the timing of GF measurements next to feeding and GF visiting behavior are essential when assessing the effect of dietary treatment on the production of CH4 and H2 in a setting where a spot sampling device such as a GF is used and where the measurements depend on voluntary visits from the cows.
Enteric and manure emissions from Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle fed grass silage-based or corn silage-based diets

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate trade-offs between enteric and manure CH4 emissions, and the size of synergistic effects for CH4 and nitrogenous emissions (NH3 and N2O). Sixty-four Holstein-Friesian cows were blocked in groups of 4 based on parity, lactation stage, and milk yield. Cows within a block were randomly allocated to a dietary sequence in a crossover design with a grass silage-based diet (GS) and a corn silage-based diet (CS). The GS diet consisted of 50% grass silage and 50% concentrate, and CS consisted of 10% grass silage, 40% corn silage, and 50% concentrate (dry matter basis). The composition of the concentrate was identical for both diets. Cows were housed in groups of 16 animals, in 4 mechanically ventilated barn units for independent emission measurement. Treatment periods were composed of a 2-wk adaptation period followed by a 5-wk measurement period, 1 wk of which was without cows to allow separation of enteric and manure emissions. In each barn unit, ventilation rates and concentrations of CH4, CO2, NH3, and N2O in incoming and outgoing air were measured. Cow excretion of organic matter was higher for CS compared with GS. Enteric CH4 and cow-associated NH3 and N2O emissions (i.e., manure emissions excluded) were lower for CS compared with GS (-11, -40, and -45%, respectively). The CH4 and N2O emissions from stored manure (i.e., in absence of cows) were not affected by diet, whereas that of NH3 emission tended to be lower for CS compared with GS. In conclusion, there was no trade-off between enteric and manure CH4 emissions, and there were synergistic effects for CH4 and nitrogenous emissions when grass silage was exchanged for corn silage, without balancing the diets for crude protein content, in this short-term study.

Abstract:Nutritional mitigation strategies represent an option to reduce enteric methane emissions from ruminants, but these strategies must not have undesirable side effects. Therefore, the present study aimed to analyze the environmental effects of supplementation of typical dairy cow feeding rations in Denmark (S 0 ) with 20 g extra fatty acids per kg dry-matter (S 1 ), 10 g nitrate per kg dry-matter (S 2 ), and 60 mg 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP) per kg dry-matter (S 3 ). A cradle-to-farm gate life cycle assessment approach was used, where fifteen environmental impacts were assessed to capture the environmental effects. Pairwise Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to identify statistically significant results. It was found that the climate impact per kg of milk decreased for all the strategies (−7 % in S 1 and S 2 and −13 % in S 3 ) compared to S 0. Furthermore, lower land use and land use change emissions were determined by the partial replacement of soybean meal with cracked rapeseed (in S 1 ) or nitrate (in S 2 ). The reduction in the level of enteric methane also contributed to decreases in the toxicity-related impacts of organic chemicals in S 1 . The use of nitrate in S 2 also involved a decrease in the use of soybean meal, which contributed to decreases in the land use impacts. In strategies S 2 and S 3 increases in other environmental impacts were observed compared to S 0 because of the manufacturing of nitrate or 3-NOP, or higher N excretion and emission at supplementation with nitrate. It was concluded that S 3 was more effective in reducing the climate (and human-toxicity impacts of organic substances) impacts, while S 1 caused small decreases in a wider range of environmental impacts. The present study has an important contribution to quantifying a wide range of environmental effects for intensive dairy and regarding the implementation of nutritional strategies in dairy cattle to reduce enteric methane.

Abstract:Emission measurements from dairy cows housed in a tying stall were carried out with the aim of finding factors that influence the amount of emissions and means to reduce emissions. All sectors of animal husbandry were investigated. This enabled calculations of emissions for the whole management system including housing, storage and spreading of manure. Emissions during aerobic composting and anaerobic stacking of farmyard manure were compared. NH3 and N2O emissions from tying stalls for dairy cows are low (5.8 g NH3 LU−1 d−1, 619.2 mg N2O LU−1 d−1). Methane emissions from the animal housing are mainly caused by enteric fermentation. During storage and after spreading of farmyard manure substantial differences concerning NH3, N2O and CH4 emissions were observed with composted and anaerobically stacked farmyard manure. The compost emitted more NH3 than the anaerobically stacked farmyard manure. About one third of the NH3 emissions from the anaerobically stacked farmyard manure occurred after spreading. Total N losses were at a low level with both storage systems. Greenhouse gas emissions (N2O and CH4) were much higher from the anaerobically stacked farmyard manure than from the composted one. As these are ecologically harmful gases, they have to be considered when judging the form of manure treatment.

Abstract:<p>Atmospheric ammonia is an important air pollutant, while dairy production is a significant source of ammonia emissions. The aim of the present dairy manure management study was to analyze: 1) the impacts of acidification of the manure surface and/or a vermiculite cover on ammonia, nitrous oxide and methane emissions from animal housing and manure storage stages, 2) the potential influence on the reactive nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) footprints of milk from cradle-to-farm-gate. It was based on a consecutive incubation trial and a life cycle assessment approach for a typical dairy farm system on the North China Plain. Trial results showed that surface-acidification of manure under a slatted floor could reduce ammonia emission by 98 and 22% from housing (one day) and storage stages (38 days), respectively, with small effects on nitrous oxide and methane emissions. The vermiculite cover (storage stage only) reduced ammonia emissions by 98% and methane by 58%, but increased nitrous oxide emissions from storage by almost six times with small absolute losses. The combination of the two mitigations retained 90% of the manure N post-storage relative to that at the start of the housing stage. Life cycle assessment indicated that the reactive-N footprint (NF, i.e. reactive N loss per kg fat- and protein-corrected milk) of milk production was dominated by ammonia emissions and was reduced by 10, 33 and 38% in the manure acidification, manure cover and combination treatments, respectively. Acidification of the manure surface, the vermiculite cover and combination treatments decreased the C footprint (CF, i.e. total greenhouse gas emissions per kg fat- and protein-corrected milk) by 1.0, 1.9 and 2.4%, respectively. This holistic analysis, combining incubation trials and life cycle assessment, indicates that surface-acidification of manure under the slatted floor and a vermiculite cover during manure storage can reduce ammonia emission from a dairy farm system, with an overall positive influence on reduction of NF and CF for dairy farm systems.</p>

Abstract:Increasing use of manure nutrients in crop production and decreasing the input of chemical fertilizers, is a promising way to achieve a more circular economy and more sustainable food systems. The integrated effects of amended composting manure with additives and a 50% substitution of chemical fertilizer nitrogen (N) input by amended manure N input to cropland were proved to halve ammonia (NH3) emissions from an integrate manure-cropland system. However, the accompanied impacts of these measures on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the integrate manure-cropland system have not been well quantified. Here, we examined the effects of improved manure storage and treatment and its usage at field on GHG emissions from a system perspective, based on a two-year experiment in the North China Plain (NCP). Manure storage and treatment included natural storage (NS) and composting with straw, with or without amendment by zeolite (Z) and superphosphate (SP). Manure products were applied as basal fertilizer for both crops. Results showed that CH4 was the dominant GHG source in the natural storage treatment, whereas N2O dominated in the manure composting treatments. Amending manure with straw, Z and SP stimulated 15–48 times N2O emission and decreased CH4 emissions by 82%–91% during storage and treatment. Replacement of 50% synthetic fertilizer N by manure N decreased total system GHG emissions by 25%–34%. Differences between composted manure treatments in total system GHG emissions were relatively small, although comparatively higher in amended manure treatments; however, they promoted greater soil organic carbon sink activity, resulting in no significant difference in net global warming potential (GWP) and greenhouse gas emission intensity (GHGI). Application of amended manure produced high nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in the integrated crop–manure system. The NH3 mitigation approach of replacing 50% of synthetic fertilizer N by amended manure N synergistically decreased total GHG emissions, increased system NUE and also increased the net economic benefit by 5%–11% over the 2 years of the experiment.

Abstract:The emission of ammonia (NH3) is predominantly caused by agriculture, especially by livestock keeping. The health effects of NH3 and the related formation of particulate matter are the reasons for solid efforts to reduce their ambient concentrations. In addition, the impact of global warming on livestock is increasing due to heat stress, likely also increasing NH3 emissions. Therefore, adaptation measures are under discussion to reduce the heat stress of animals inside livestock units. Because of the relationship between temperature increase and NH3 release, the impact of the adaptation measures to cool the indoor air of livestock units (three different energy-saving air preparation systems, an inversion of the feeding and resting times by half a day, a reduction of the stocking density and doubling the maximum volume flow rate) was investigated. The NH3 release was calculated by the following predictors: indoor air temperature; ventilation rate describing the turbulence inside the livestock building; and the diurnal variation caused by the animal activity. These parameters were calculated by a simulation model for the indoor climate of livestock buildings. The monthly mean of the NH3 emission for several adaptation measures, which were applied to reduce heat stress, were compared with the emission of a reference building for 1800 fattening pigs, divided into nine sections with 200 animals each for an all-in-all-out production cycle to calculate the mitigation potential. The higher the cooling power of such adaptation measures, the higher the mitigation potential for NH3. In particular, those adaptation measures which cool the inlet air (e.g., cooling pads reduce the emission by −2%, earth-air heat exchangers by −3.1%) show the best performance to mitigate the NH3 emission of livestock buildings.

Abstract:The ultrastructure of the outer retina in the endangered killifish, Aphanius sirhani was studied. The retina shows all eight layers and two membranes typical of vertebrates. The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) consists of a single layer of closely packed, polygonal, low columnar cells. These cells have large, vesicular nuclei, well developed smooth endoplasmic reticulum, and well developed mitochondria. Phagosomes, lipid droplets and myeloid bodies are also evident. The cells bear numerous apical processes that, in light-adapted fish, interdigitate with the photoreceptor outer segments. The retina is of the duplex type, i.e. contains rods and cones. A variety of cones have been recorded in the present species. These include short, intermediate and long single cones, double and triangular, triple cones. Rod spherules each with a single synaptic ribbon and cone pedicles, each with several synaptic ribbons have been recorded in the outer plexiform layer.

Abstract:The objective was to investigate the effect of nonprotein nitrogen source, dietary protein supply, and genetic yield index on methane emission, N metabolism, and ruminal fermentation in dairy cows. Forty-eight Danish Holstein dairy cows (24 primiparous cows and 24 multiparous cows) were used in a 6 × 4 incomplete Latin square design with 4 periods of 21-d duration. Cows were fed ad libitum with the following 6 experimental diets: diets with low, medium, or high rumen degradable protein (RDP):rumen undegradable protein (RUP) ratio (manipulated by changing the proportion of corn meal, corn gluten meal, and corn gluten feed) combined with either urea or nitrate (10 g NO3-/kg of dry matter) as nonprotein nitrogen source. Samples of ruminal fluid and feces were collected from multiparous cows, and total-tract nutrient digestibility was estimated using TiO2 as flow marker. Milk samples were collected from all 48 cows. Gas emission (CH4, CO2, and H2) was measured by 4 GreenFeed units. We observed no significant interaction between dietary RDP:RUP ratio and nitrate supplementation, and between nitrate supplementation and genetic yield index on CH4 emission (production, yield, intensity). As dietary RDP:RUP ratio increased, intake of crude protein, RDP, and neutral detergent fiber and total-tract digestibility of crude protein linearly increased, and RUP intake linearly decreased. Yield of milk, energy-corrected milk, and milk protein and lactose linearly decreased, whereas milk fat and milk urea nitrogen concentrations linearly increased as dietary RDP:RUP ratio increased. The increase in dietary RDP:RUP ratio resulted in a linear increase in the excretion of total purine derivatives and N in urine, but a linear decrease in N efficiency (milk N in % of N intake). Nitrate supplementation reduced dry matter intake (DMI) and increased total-tract organic matter digestibility compared with urea supplementation. Nitrate supplementation resulted in a greater reduction in DMI and daily CH4 production and a greater increase in daily H2 production in multiparous cows compared with primiparous cows. Nitrate supplementation also showed a greater reduction in milk protein and lactose yield in multiparous cows than in primiparous cows. Milk protein and lactose concentrations were lower for cows receiving nitrate diets compared with cows receiving urea diets. Nitrate supplementation reduced urinary purine derivatives excretion from the rumen, whereas N efficiency tended to increase. Nitrate supplementation reduced proportion of acetate and propionate in ruminal volatile fatty acids. In conclusion, no interaction was observed between dietary RDP:RUP ratio and nitrate supplementation, and no interaction between nitrate supplementation and genetic yield index on CH4 emission (production, yield, intensity) was noted. Nitrate supplementation resulted in a greater reduction in DMI and CH4 production, and a greater increase in H2 production in multiparous cows than in primiparous cows. As the dietary RDP:RUP ratio increased, CH4 emission was unaffected and RDP intake increased, but RUP intake and milk yield decreased. Genetic yield index did not affect CH4 production, yield, or intensity.

Abstract:Understanding the impact of changing pasture composition on reducing emissions of GHGs in dairy grazing systems is an important issue to mitigate climate change. The aim of this study was to estimate daily CH₄ emissions of dairy cows grazing two mixed pastures with contrasting composition of grasses and legumes: L pasture with 60% legumes on Dry Matter (DM) basis and G pasture with 75% grasses on DM basis. Milk production and CH₄ emissions were compared over two periods of two weeks during spring using eight lactating Holstein cows in a 2 × 2 Latin square design. Herbage organic matter intake (HOMI) was estimated by chromic oxide dilution and herbage organic matter digestibility (OMD) was estimated by faecal index. Methane emission was estimated by using the sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer technique adapted to collect breath samples over 5-day periods. OMD (0.71) and HOMI (15.7 kg OM) were not affected by pasture composition. Milk production (20.3 kg/d), milk fat yield (742 g/d) and milk protein yield (667 g/d) were similar for both pastures. This may be explained by the high herbage allowance (30 kg DM above 5 cm/cow) which allowed the cows to graze selectively, in particular in grass sward. Similarly, methane emission expressed as absolute value (368 g/d or 516 L/d) or expressed as methane yield (6.6% of Gross Energy Intake (GEI)) was not affected by treatments. In conclusion, at high herbage allowance, the quality of the diet selected by grazing cows did not differ between pastures rich in legumes or rich in grasses, and therefore there was no effect on milk or methane production.

Abstract:Dehydrated lucerne is used as a protein source in dairy cow rations, but little is known about the effects of lucerne on greenhouse gas production by animals. Eight Holstein dairy cows (average weight: 582 kg) were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design. They received diets based on either maize silage (M) or grass silage (G) (45% of diet on dry matter (DM) basis), with either soya bean meal (15% of diet DM) completed with beet pulp (15% of diet DM) (SP) or dehydrated lucerne (L) (30% of diet DM) as protein sources; MSP, ML, GSP and GL diets were calculated to meet energy requirements for milk production by dairy cows and degradable protein for rumen microbes. Dry matter intake (DMI) did not differ among diets (18.0 kg/day DMI); milk production was higher with SP diets than with L diets (26.0 v. 24.1 kg/day), but milk production did not vary with forage type. Milk fatty-acid (FA) composition was modified by both forage and protein sources: L and G diets resulted in less saturated FA, less linoleic acid, more trans-monounsaturated FA, and more linolenic acid than SP and M diets, respectively. Enteric methane (CH4) production, measured by the SF6 tracer method, was higher for G diets than for M diets, but did not differ with protein source. The same effects were observed when CH4 was expressed per kg milk. Minor effects of diets on rumen fermentation pattern were observed. Manure CH4 emissions estimated from faecal organic matter were negatively related to diet digestibility and were thus higher for L than SP diets, and higher for M than G diets; the resulting difference in total CH4 production was small. Owing to diet formulation constraints, N intake was higher for SP than for L diets; interaction between forage type and protein source was significant for N intake. The same statistical effects were found for N in milk. Faecal and urinary N losses were determined from total faeces and urine collection. Faecal N output was lower for M than for G diets but did not differ between protein sources. Urinary N output did not differ between forage types, but was lower for cows fed L diets than for cows fed SP diets, potentially resulting in lower ammonia emissions with L diets. Replacing soya bean meal plus beet pulp with dehydrated lucerne did not change CH4 production, but resulted in more N in faeces and less N in urine.

The aim of this study was to evaluate dietary protein utilization at different crude protein (CP) levels and to predict nitrogen content in faeces on the basis of nutritional parameters and milk urea nitrogen content (MUN, mg dL -1 ). The study was conducted on three groups (A, B, C) of lactating dairy cows (8 cows per group, including Latvian Brown and Holstein Black and White breeds) from 10 to 30 days in milk. Total mixed rations containing different levels of CP (approximately 18.0%, 17.5% and 17.0% for A, B and C, respectively) were fed. The amount of feed consumed by each cow was measured and feed samples collected during the trial. Milk yield (kg d-1 -1 ) and faeces amount were recorded, and samples were collected at day 21 of the study for further analysis. Feed samples were analysed for CP, net energy for lactation (NEL, MJ kg -1 ) and other parameters. Milk samples were analysed for fat (%), total protein (%), casein (%) and urea content (mg dL -1 ). The statistical investigation was conducted using ANOVA, and correlation and regression analyses. The results showed that milk yield, fat, total protein, casein, urea, and MUN were not significantly different among groups being not affected by the dietary CP levels. The correlation between faecal nitrogen content and CP content in feed was moderately positive and statistically significant (r=0.44, P=0.03), while the correlation between faecal nitrogen content and MUN was moderately negative and showed tendency towards significance (r=-0.39, P=0.06). The regression analysis showed that feed CP explained approximately 20% of faeces nitrogen content. Seasonal and diel variations of ammonia and methane emissions from a naturally ventilated dairy building and the associated factors influencing emissions

Abstract:Understanding seasonal and diel variations of ammonia (NH3) and methane (CH4) emissions from a naturally ventilated dairy (NVD) building may lead to develop successful control strategies for reducing emissions throughout the year. The main objective of this study was to quantify seasonal and diel variations of NH3 and CH4 emissions together with associated factors influencing emissions. Measurements were carried out with identical experimental set-up to cover three winter, spring and summer seasons, and two autumn seasons in the years 2010, 2011, and 2012. The data from 2010 and 2011 were used for developing emission prediction models and the data from 2012 were used for model validation. The results showed that NH3 emission varied seasonally following outside temperature whereas CH4 emission did not show clear seasonal trend. Diel variation of CH4 emission was less pronounced than NH3. The average NH3 and CH4 emissions between 6a.m. and 6p.m. were 66% and 33% higher than the average NH3 and CH4 emissions between 6p.m. and 6a.m., respectively for all seasons. The significant relationships (P<0.0001) between NH3 and influencing factors were found including outside temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, hour of the day and day of the year. The significant effect (P<0.0001) of climate factors, hours of the day and days of the year on CH4 emission might be directly related to activities of the cows.

Abstract:Past studies have shown that isoacids (ISO) improve dairy cow performance, with effects varying based on dietary forage levels, leading us to speculate that ISO supplementation may also differentially affect enteric methane (CH4) emissions depending on dietary forage levels. Therefore, our primary objective was to examine the effects of ISO supplementation on enteric CH4 emissions in lactating dairy cows fed 2 forage NDF levels (FL), along with monitoring feed particle sorting and chewing behaviors to assess any potential interactions. Sixty-four (64) mid-lactation Holstein cows were utilized in a 10-wk long randomized complete block design trial. Parity, DIM, and prior milk yield (MY) for multiparous cows or genetic merit for primiparous cows were used as blocking factors. Cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 diets (n = 16 per diet) with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatment combinations, including 2 FL, 17 (LF) and 21% forage NDF (HF), without or with ISO supplementation (7.85 mmol/kg DM for isobutyrate and 3.44 mmol/kg DM for 2-methylbutyrate, respectively). Enteric CH4 and chewing activity (rumination and eating time) were measured using the GreenFeed system and sensor-based ear tag system, respectively. The particle size of each diet and ort from individual cows was measured using the Penn State Particle Separator, and a sorting index was calculated. A sorting index of 100 indicates no sorting, while values above or below 100 indicate sorting for or against, respectively. Data were analyzed using a mixed model including FL, ISO, and FL × ISO as fixed effects and block as a random effect (lme4 in R). Our result shows that ISO increased sorting index for long particle in LF (96.1 vs. 109; P < 0.01) but decreased it in HF (100.8 vs. 92.5; P = 0.04). In contrast, ISO did not affect the physically effective particle sorting index (P = 0.51) or intake (P = 0.27) regardless of FL. In alignment with the long particle sorting index, ISO decreased eating and chewing time in the HF but increased them in the LF diet (P < 0.01). In contrast, rumination time was comparable between FL (P = 0.70) and ISO levels (P = 0.19). In the LF diet, ISO supplementation reduced daily CH4 production (g/d) by 9% and intensity (g/kg of MY) by 18% (P < 0.01). In the HF diet, ISO supplementation led to a 10% increase in daily CH4 (P < 0.01) but did not change CH4 intensity (P = 0.17; g/kg of MY) due to improved milk production. Overall, ISO altered feed sorting, feeding behaviors and enteric CH4 emissions depending on FL.
