Abstract:The hot electrons in carbon-based materials exhibit interesting ballistic transport behaviors for designing high-perform-ance single-electron transistors. However, the cooling of such hot electrons back to the equilibrium state may be slowed down by the excessively populated optical phonons, thus limiting their ballistic transport. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the coupling between hot electrons and optical phonons is of critical importance. Here, by varying the thickness of a multilayer graphene film on a supporting substrate, we investigated the competition pathways of the energy relaxation of the photoinduced hot electrons through coupling with the optical, surface, and acoustic phonons. The difference in the tau 2 values indicates that thickness plays an important role in the optical phonon population. For the multilayer graphene film thickness less than 3 nm, the super-collision model describes the hot electron cooling dynamics that is strongly affected by the surface phonons from the supporting substrate. As the multilayer graphene film thickness increases from 3 to 20 nm, the accumulation of the optical phonons induces a hot optical phonon effect, resulting in a bottleneck of cooling of the hot electrons. As the multilayer graphene film thickness further increases from 20 to 40 nm, a direct coupling between the hot electrons and acoustic phonons starts to dominate. The surface states of the interfaces at the inner layers of the multilayer graphene film contribute to this direct coupling as an additional cooling channel. The quantitative understanding of the energy relaxation pathways of the hot electrons offers insights into designing high-performance single-electron transistors.
In Situ TEM Observation of Radiolysis and Condensation of Water Via Graphene Liquid Cell

Abstract:Water is involved in many important physical, chemical, and biological phenomena. However, not much is known about water at the nanoscale level, such as about its radiolysis and condensation, because of the experimental difficulties of imaging liquid at such a length-scale. The newly developed graphene liquid cell (GLC) technique facilitates imaging dynamic events in a liquid medium with unprecedented resolution while sustaining the most realistic liquid condition achievable under electron-beam irradiation. The graphene liquid cell was fabricated by the wet transfer of monolayer graphene synthesized by chemical vapor deposition to a graphene-supported transmission electron microscope (TEM) grid, and the water islands were naturally captured during the wet transfer process. Compared with traditional, commercial silicon nitride cells, the fabrication of graphene liquid cells required higher expertise and thus related research reports are limited. Here, we used graphene liquid cells for in situ TEM observation of dynamic behaviors of entrapped water between two layers of graphene. The radiolysis and condensation processes of water could be modulated by controlling the electron dose rate. We showed that a high electron dose rate yields supersaturated concentration of gas molecules in a liquid system, and the excess gas then dissolve out in the form of a series of nanobubbles at a low dose rate. From The quantitative and statistical analyses of the dynamic processes of the confined liquid showed that the growth of the nanobubbles is limited by interface reactions and the newly formed nanobubble inhibits the growth of the existing one. The gas molecules inside the nanobubbles are in a "dense gas" phase and the density number ratio of the gas molecules inside each nanobubble decreases during the growth process of each nanobubble. The total number of gas molecules increases approximately linearly with time. A fixed middle dose rate leads to the condensation of droplets, with repeat growth/dissolution processes on the inner wall of graphene. The contact angles at the water-graphene interface are less than 90 degrees, suggesting that the scrolled graphene is hydrophilic. Using in situ GLC-TEM imaging, we directly observed the dynamic processes involved in beam-induced bubble formation in liquid and nanodroplet condensation from vapor at the preferential sites. Some unexpected and so-far undiscovered phenomena involving both nanobubbles and nanodroplets were observed and investigated in detail, which increased our knowledge on the behaviors of the nanoconfined liquid. Our results presented here would serve as an important reference to understand the vapor/liquid interface transition in a nanoconfined space and electron-water interactions in liquid cell TEM. The experiment and method reported here may help find further applications of the new graphene liquid cell technique. The use of graphene liquid cell will also help a wide range of studies on reactions and process dynamics in material science and biochemistry that either have not been explored or need more detailed understanding.
Reorientation of Hydrogen Bonds Renders Unusual Enhancement in Thermal Transport of Water in Nanoconfined Environments

Abstract:Liquid confined in a nanochannel or nanotube has exhibited a superfast transport phenomenon, providing an ideal heat and mass transfer platform to meet the increasingly stringent challenge of thermal management in developing high-power-density nanoelectronics and nanochips. However, understanding the thermal transport of confined liquid is currently lacking and is speculated to be fundamentally different from that of bulk counterparts due to the unprecedented thermodynamics of liquid in nanoconfined environments. Here, we report that the thermal conductivity of water confined in a silica nanotube is nearly 2-fold as that of bulk status. Further molecular dynamics simulations reveal that this unusual enhancement originates from the densification and reorientation of local hydrogen bonds close to the nanotubes. Thermal-confinement scaling law is established and quantitatively supported by comprehensive simulations with remarkable agreement. Our findings lay a theoretical foundation for designing nanofluidics-enabled cooling strategies and devices.
Ultrafast Radiative Heat Transfer

Abstract:Light absorption in conducting materials produces heating of their conduction electrons, followed by relaxation into phonons within picoseconds, and subsequent diffusion into the surrounding media over longer timescales. This conventional picture of optical heating is supplemented by radiative cooling, which typically takes place at an even lower pace, only becoming relevant for structures held in vacuum or under extreme conditions of thermal isolation. Here we reveal an ultrafast radiative cooling regime between neighboring plasmon-supporting graphene nanostructures in which noncontact heat transfer becomes a dominant channel. We predict that >50% of the electronic heat energy deposited on a graphene disk can be transferred to a neighboring nanoisland within a femtosecond timescale. This phenomenon is facilitated by the combination of low electronic heat capacity and large plasmonic field concentration displayed by doped graphene. Similar effects should take place in other van der Waals materials, thus opening an unexplored avenue toward efficient heat management in ultrathin nanostructures.

Abstract:The low-resistance transport of water within graphene nanochannels makes it promising for electronic cooling applications. However, how the water pressure and the water–graphene interaction strength affect the flow field and the thermal transfer, including velocity slip, friction coefficient, Nusselt number, temperature slip, interfacial thermal resistance, and variation of physical properties, is still not clearly understood. In this paper, we employ molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate qualitatively the heat transfer of water flow in graphene nanochannels. Our results reveal that the water peak density near the wall increases approximately linearly with water pressure and water–graphene interaction strength. The water peak density near the water–graphene interface is a key factor in regulating interfacial flow and heat transfer characteristics. Under constant inlet temperature, the relationship between velocity slip length and peak density follows a consistent power function, simply modifying the pressure or the interaction strength doesn't bring a specific effect. The Nusselt number and interfacial thermal resistance are not solely dependent on water peak density; at the same water peak density, increasing interaction strength results in lower interfacial thermal resistance compared to increasing pressure. Increasing pressure improves both interfacial heat transfer and internal heat transfer of water. Furthermore, the convection heat transfer coefficient increases approximately linearly with flow resistance when pressure and interaction strength vary moderately. Finally, we notice that pressure and interaction strength hardly affect the variation range of viscosity and thermal conductivity at a channel height of 10–12 nm. These qualitative insights could lead to the development of more efficient cooling systems for electronic devices.

Abstract:Ultraclean graphene at charge neutrality hosts a quantum critical Dirac fluid of interacting electrons and holes. Interactions profoundly affect the charge dynamics of graphene, which is encoded in the properties of its electron-photon collective modes: surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Here we show that polaritonic interference patterns are particularly well suited to unveil the interactions in Dirac fluids by tracking polaritonic interference in time at temporal scales commensurate with the electronic scattering. Spacetime SPP interference patterns recorded in tera-hertz (THz) frequency range provided unobstructed readouts of the group velocity and lifetime of polariton that can be directly mapped onto the electronic spectral weight and the relaxation rate. Our data uncovered prominent departures of the electron dynamics from the predictions of the conventional Fermi-liquid theory. The deviations are particularly strong when the densities of electrons and holes are approximately equal. The proposed spacetime imaging methodology can be broadly applied to probe the electrodynamics of quantum materials.

Observation of Electronic Viscous Dissipation in Graphene Magneto-thermal Transport

Abstract:Hydrodynamic transport effectively describes the collective dynamics of fluids with well-defined thermodynamic quantities. With enhanced electron-electron interactions at elevated temperatures, the collective behavior of electrons in graphene with minimal impurities can be depicted as a hydrodynamic flow of charges. In this new regime, the well-known rules of Ohmic transport based on a single electron picture no longer apply, necessitating the consideration of collective electron dynamics. In particular, the hydrodynamic analogues of Joule heating and thermal transport require consideration of the viscous motion of the electron fluid, which has a direct impact on energy dissipation and heat generation by the fluidic motion of charge. In this work, we probe graphene hydrodynamics with thermal transport and find two distinct, qualitative signatures: thermal conductivity suppression below the Wiedemann-Franz value and viscous heating leading to magnetically-induced redistribution of temperature. We find these two effects are coincident in temperature and density, providing robust qualitative signatures of hydrodynamics, despite arising from two distinct aspects of this new regime: microscopic momentum conservation due to electron-electron scattering, and geometry-dependent viscous dissipation. Our results mark the first observation of viscous electronic heating in an electron fluid, providing insight for thermal management in electronic hydrodynamic devices and offering a new methodology for identifying hydrodynamic states in other systems.

Abstract:Light incident upon materials can induce changes in their electrical conductivity, a phenomenon referred to as photoresistance. In semiconductors, the photoresistance is negative, as light-induced promotion of electrons across the bandgap enhances the number of charge carriers participating in transport. In superconductors and normal metals, the photoresistance is positive because of the destruction of the superconducting state and enhanced momentum-relaxing scattering, respectively. Here we report a qualitative deviation from the standard behaviour in doped metallic graphene. We show that Dirac electrons exposed to continuous-wave terahertz (THz) radiation can be thermally decoupled from the lattice, which activates hydrodynamic electron transport. In this regime, the resistance of graphene constrictions experiences a decrease caused by the THz-driven superballistic flow of correlated electrons. We analyse the dependencies of the negative photoresistance on the carrier density, and the radiation power, and show that our superballistic devices operate as sensitive phonon-cooled bolometers and can thus offer, in principle, a picosecond-scale response time. Beyond their fundamental implications, our findings underscore the practicality of electron hydrodynamics in designing ultra-fast THz sensors and electron thermometers.

Abstract:We measured the size of visual fields within which actual and imagined circular patterns could be resolved, as the patterns varied in both area and relative contrast. As pattern area increased, imagery fields increased in size at the same rate as perceptual fields. However, as the relative contrast between parts of the patterns was reduced, perceptual fields diminished in size, while imagery fields did not. for all variations of pattern area and contrast, fields in imagery were roughly the same shape as fields in perception. A control experiment provided no support for the possible criticism that these results might be explained on the basis of subjects' expectations for the size and shape of the imagery fields, especially since control subjects falsely believed that reductions in contrast would reduce considerably the size of these fields. Although these findings suggest that images and physical objects are functionally equivalent at pattern-processing levels of the visual system, they demonstrate that images and objects are not functionally equivalent at certain levels of the visual system where information about relative contrast is processed.
Electron cooling in graphene thermal transistors

Abstract:In the emergent field of quantum technology, the ability to manage heat at the nanoscale and in cryogenic conditions is crucial for enhancing device performance in terms of noise, coherence, and sensitivity. Here, we demonstrate the active cooling and refrigeration of the electron gas in a graphene thermal transistor, by taking advantage of nanoscale superconductive tunnel contacts able to pump or extract heat directly from the electrons in the device. Our prototypes achieved a top cooling of electrons in graphene of about 15 mK at a bath temperature of about 450 mK, demonstrating the viability of the proposed device architecture. Our experimental findings are backed by a detailed thermal model that accurately replicated the observed device behavior. Alternative cooling schemes and perspectives are discussed in light of the reported results. Finally, our graphene thermal transistor could find application in superconducting hybrid quantum technologies.

Abstract:Electronic cooling in hybrid normal metal-insulator-superconductor junctions is a promising technology for the manipulation of thermal loads in solid state nanosystems. One of the main bottlenecks for efficient electronic cooling is the electron-phonon coupling, as it represents a thermal leakage channel to the phonon bath. Graphene is a two-dimensional material that exhibits a weaker electron-phonon coupling compared to standard metals. For this reason, we study the electron cooling in graphene-based systems consisting of a graphene sheet contacted by two insulator/superconductor junctions. We show that, by properly biasing the graphene, its electronic temperature can reach base values lower than those achieved in similar systems based on metallic ultra-thin films. Moreover, the lower electron-phonon coupling is mirrored in a lower heat power pumped into the superconducting leads, thus avoiding their overheating and preserving the cooling mechanisms. Finally, we analyze the possible application of cooled graphene as a bolometric radiation sensor. We study its main figures of merit, i.e. responsivity, noise equivalent power and response time. In particular, we show that the built-in electron refrigeration allows reaching a responsivity of the order of 50 nA/pW and a noise equivalent power of order of $\rm 10^{-18}\, W\, Hz^{-1/2}$ while the response speed is about 10 ns, corresponding to a thermal bandwidth in the order of 20MHz.

Abstract:In van der Waals bonded or rotationally disordered multilayer stacks of two-dimensional (2D) materials, the electronic states remain tightly confined within individual 2D layers. As a result, electron-phonon interactions occur primarily within layers and interlayer electrical conductivities are low. In addition, strong covalent in-plane intralayer bonding combined with weak van der Waals interlayer bonding results in weak phonon-mediated thermal coupling between the layers. We demonstrate here, however, that Coulomb interactions between electrons in different layers of multilayer epitaxial graphene provide an important mechanism for interlayer thermal transport even though all electronic states are strongly confined within individual 2D layers. This effect is manifested in the relaxation dynamics of hot carriers in ultrafast time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy. We develop a theory of interlayer Coulomb coupling containing no free parameters that accounts for the experimentally observed trends in hot-carrier dynamics as temperature and the number of layers is varied.
Fluctuation-induced friction and heat transfer at the water-multilayer graphene interface

Abstract:Calculations of friction and heat transfer at the water-multilayer graphene interface using the theories of phononic and radiative friction and heat transfer are presented. The phononic contributions to friction and heat transfer are many orders of magnitude larger than the radiative contributions. Phononic friction and heat transfer slightly increase with an increase in the number of graphene layers $N$ and reach saturation at $N>5$, which is associated with an increase in the phonon transmission coefficient through the interface and a finite phonon mean free path in the direction perpendicular to the surface. The radiative contributions are almost independent on $N$, since for distance between water and graphene of the order of the interlayer distance in graphene the interaction of evanescent waves with multilayer graphene is limited by the first graphene layer. The results for the phonon contributions agree with the results obtained for the Kapitsa resistance using MD simulation and with the experimental data obtained for the friction coefficients at the water-monolayer graphene interface. The potential difference leads to a strong increase in the radiative contributions to friction and heat transfer, which become approximately an order of magnitude greater than the phononic contributions at a potential difference of $\sim 10$V.

Abstract:Effective heat dissipation is critical for the performance and longevity of electronic devices. This study delves into the intricacies of thermal boundary conductance (TBC) between multilayer graphene and silicon, scrutinizing its correlation with graphene thickness. Employing a combination of the no -transducer time -domain thermal reflection technique and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations with empirical and machine -learning based potentials, we discover an intriguing behavior: TBC initially increases with graphene thickness, but it eventually converges, suggesting that this phenomenon originates from the transition of the phonon transport from the ballistic to the diffusive regime in multilayer graphene. It is further demonstrated that a graphene-MoS 2 heterostructure exhibits a thickness -independent TBC behavior due to the strong phonon localization across the entire frequency range. The present study emphasizes the significance of incorporating phonon transport regimes in the design and optimization of thermal interfaces, laying the groundwork for innovative strategies to enhance heat dissipation in electronic devices.
Ultrafast Hot-Carrier cooling in Quasi Freestanding Bilayer Graphene with Hydrogen Intercalated Atoms

Abstract:We perform a femtosecond-THz optical pump-probe spectroscopy to investigate the cooling dynamics of hot carriers in quasi-free standing bilayer epitaxial graphene. We observed longer decay time constants, in the range of 2.6 to 6.4 ps, compared to previous studies on monolayer graphene, which increase nonlinearly with excitation intensity. The increased relaxation times are due to the decoupling of the graphene layer from the SiC substrate after hydrogen intercalation which increases the distance between graphene and substrate. Furthermore, our measurements do not show that the supercollision mechanism is related to the cooling process of the hot carriers, which is ultimately achieved by electron-optical phonon scattering.

Abstract:Through a series of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, the interfacial thermal transport between liquid water and single-layer graphene film on the silicon substrate was studied. Three factors were justified for the interfacial thermal transport including interfacial interaction strength, water film thickness and water density. The results show that the interfacial heat transport capacity exhibits a significant dependence on the interaction strength, and this change in interfacial thermal conductance (ITC) was verified by calculating the vibrational density of states (VDOS). Meanwhile, dramatic oscillation was observed in the density of the liquid water near the wall, indicating that the motion law of water molecules was affected by the interaction force at the interface. Further study on the effect of water film thickness and density on the interfacial thermal transport, it is found that there is a critical value for the ITC with the change of water film thickness. When the water film thickness is greater than 4 nm, the effect on the interfacial thermal transport is not obvious, and the ITC gradually tends to a stable value. However, for the liquid water density, the ITC basically shows an increasing trend with the increase of density. In addition, the solid–liquid interface spacing was found to be variability and the distance is determined by the thickness and density of the water film.
In situ probing of electron transfer at the dynamic MoS2/graphene–water interface for modulating boundary slip

Abstract:The boundary slip condition is pivotal for nanoscale fluid motion. Recent research has primarily focused on simulating the interaction mechanism between the electronic structure of two-dimensional materials and slip of water at the nanoscale, raising the possibility for ultralow friction flow of water at the nanoscale. However, experimentally elucidating electronic interactions at the dynamic solid–liquid interface to control boundary slip poses a significant challenge. In this study, the crucial role of electron structures at the dynamic solid–liquid interface in regulating slip length was revealed. Notably, the slip length of water on the molybdenum disulfide/graphene (MoS 2 /G) heterostructure (100.9 ± 3.6 nm) significantly exceeded that of either graphene (27.7 ± 2.2 nm) or MoS 2 (5.7 ± 3.1 nm) alone. It was also analyzed how electron transfer significantly affected interface interactions. Excess electrons played a crucial role in determining the type and proportion of excitons at both MoS 2 –water and MoS 2 /G–water interfaces. Additionally, by applying voltage, distinct photoluminescence (PL) responses at static and dynamic interfaces were discovered, achieving a 5-fold modulation in PL intensity and a 2-fold modulation in the trion to exciton intensity ratio. More electrons transfer from the top graphene to the bottom MoS 2 at the MoS 2 /G–water interface, reducing surface charge density. Thus, the reduction of electrostatic interactions between the solid and water leads to an increased slip length of water on the MoS 2 /G heterostructure. The process aids in comprehending the origin of frictional resistance at the subatomic scale. Electronic Cooling in Graphene

Abstract:Energy transfer to acoustic phonons is the dominant low-temperature cooling channel of electrons in a <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://crystal.For" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> cold neutral graphene we find that the weak cooling power of its acoustical modes relative to the heat capacity of the system leads to a power law decay of the electronic temperature when far from equilibrium. For heavily doped graphene a high electronic temperature is shown to initially decrease linearly with time at a rate proportional to n^(3/2) with n being the electronic density. We discuss the relative importance of optical and acoustic phonons to cooling.

Enhanced Thermal Transport Across Multilayer Graphene and Water by Interlayer Functionalization

Abstract:Graphene has attracted enormous attention due to its extraordinary physical properties, which have potential for increasing the thermal conductivity of nanocomposites or nanofluids, and the thermal resistance between graphene and the surrounding matrices arises as an important issue. In this paper, the thermal transport at the graphene-water interface is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The interfacial thermal resistance decreases with the graphene layer number. Interlayer functionalization by oxygen atoms is applied to tune the interfacial thermal resistance. A peak thermal resistance reduction of nearly 50% is generated with the oxygen ratio of only 0.5% for two-layer graphene. Based on the analyses of vibrational density of states, it is found that lower thermal resistance is consistent with more vibrational density of states overlaps at the interface. Our results are instructive for improving the interfacial thermal transport in graphene-based nanocomposites and nanofluids.
Hot electron cooling by acoustic phonons in graphene

Abstract:We have investigated the energy loss of hot electrons in metallic graphene by means of GHz noise thermometry at liquid helium temperature. We observe the electronic temperature T / V at low bias in agreement with the heat diffusion to the leads described by the Wiedemann-Franz law. We report on $T\propto\sqrt{V}$ behavior at high bias, which corresponds to a T4 dependence of the cooling power. This is the signature of a 2D acoustic phonon cooling mechanism. From a heat equation analysis of the two regimes we extract accurate values of the electron-acoustic phonon coupling constant $\Sigma$ in monolayer graphene. Our measurements point to an important effect of lattice disorder in the reduction of $\Sigma$, not yet considered by theory. Moreover, our study provides a strong and firm support to the rising field of graphene bolometric detectors.
