Abstract:The sense of touch is underused in today's virtual reality systems due to lack of wearable, soft, mm-scale transducers to generate dynamic mechanical stimulus on the skin. Extremely thin actuators combining both high force and large displacement are a long-standing challenge in soft actuators. Sub-mm thick flexible hydraulically amplified electrostatic actuators are reported here, capable of both out-of-plane and in-plane motion, providing normal and shear forces to the user's fingertip, hand, or arm. Each actuator consists of a fluid-filled cavity whose shell is made of a metalized polyester boundary and a central elastomer region. When a voltage is applied to the annular electrodes, the fluid is rapidly forced into the stretchable region, forming a raised bump. A 6 mm × 6 mm × 0.8 mm actuator weighs 90 mg, and generates forces of over 300 mN, out-of-plane displacements of 500 µm (over 60% strain), and lateral motion of 760 µm. Response time is below 5 ms, for a specific power of 100 W kg-1 . In user tests, human subjects distinguished normal and different 2-axis shear forces with over 80% accuracy. A flexible 5 × 5 array is demonstrated, integrated in a haptic sleeve.

Abstract:One grand challenge in haptic human-machine interface devices is to electromechanically stimulate sensations on the human skin wirelessly by thin and soft patches under a low driving voltage. Here, we propose a soft haptics-feedback system using highly charged, polymeric electret films with an annulus-shape bump structure to induce mechanical sensations on the fingertip of volunteers under an applied voltage range of 5-20 V. As an application demonstration, a 3 x 3 actuators array is used for transmitting patterned haptic information, such as letters of 'T', 'H', 'U' letters and numbers of '0', '1', '2'. Moreover, together with flexible lithium batteries and a flexible circuit board, an untethered stimulation patch is constructed for operations of 1 h. The analytical model, design principle, and performance characterizations can be applicable for the integration of other wearable electronics toward practical applications in the fields of AR (augmented reality), VR (virtual reality) and robotics.

Abstract:The research aims to expand tactile feedback beyond vibrations to various modes of stimuli, such as indentation, vibration, among others. By incorporating soft material into the design of a novel tactile actuator, we can achieve multi-modality and enhance the device's wearability, which encompasses compliance, safety, and portability. The proposed tactile device can elevate the presence and immersion in VR by enabling diverse haptic feedback such as, force indentation, vibration and other arbitrary force outputs. This approach enables the rendering of haptic interactions with virtual objects, such as grasping of aa 3D virtual object to feel its stiffness - action that was difficult to achieve using widely adopted vibrotactile motors.

Abstract:An air permeable vibrotactile actuator achieves excellent air permeability of 108 L m−2 s−1, low preload requirement of 10 mN, high output sensitivity of 0.2 mN V−1, and good mechanical durability by surviving 11 million testing cycles. A wearable wireless haptic feedback system is developed for transmitting haptic information to different parts of human body in real time, such as finger and chest. Vibrotactile actuators can evoke mechanical stimulations on human skins to induce haptic feedbacks for various human machine interaction applications. However, efforts toward their practical usages encounter several engineering challenges, including wearable comfortability and output abilities. Here, air permeable actuators are developed and embedded in common fabrics for vibrotactile actuation, achieving excellent air permeability of 108 L m−2 s−1, low preload requirement of 10 mN, high output sensitivity of 0.2 mN/V, and good mechanical durability by surviving 11 million testing cycles. As demonstration examples, a wireless haptic feedback glove is shown to distinguish 32 different English characters and symbols with an overall accuracy of 97.8%, and large size actuators (10 × 10 cm2) are also proved for providing haptic feedback for parts of human body. As such, the proposed system opens a new class of wearable vibrotactile actuators for potential applications in wide fields of metaverse, teleoperation, smart textiles, and robotics.

Generating Clear Vibrotactile Cues with a Magnet Embedded in a Soft Finger Sheath

Abstract:Haptic displays act on the user's body to stimulate the sense of touch and enrich applications from gaming and computer-aided design to rehabilitation and remote surgery. However, when crafted from typical rigid robotic components, they tend to be heavy, bulky, and expensive, while sleeker designs often struggle to create clear haptic cues. This article introduces a lightweight wearable silicone finger sheath that can deliver salient and rich vibrotactile cues using electromagnetic actuation. We fabricate the sheath on a ferromagnetic mandrel with a process based on dip molding, a robust fabrication method that is rarely used in soft robotics but is suitable for commercial production. A miniature rare-earth magnet embedded within the silicone layers at the center of the finger pad is driven to vibrate by the application of alternating current to a nearby air-coil. Experiments are conducted to determine the amplitude of the magnetic force and the frequency response function for the displacement amplitude of the magnet perpendicular to the skin. In addition, high-fidelity finite element analyses of the finger wearing the device are performed to investigate the trends observed in the measurements. The experimental and simulated results show consistent dynamic behavior from 10 to 1000 Hz, with the displacement decreasing after about 300 Hz. These results match the detection threshold profile obtained in a psychophysical study performed by 17 users, where more current was needed only at the highest frequency. A cue identification experiment and a demonstration in virtual reality validate the feasibility of this approach to fingertip haptics.

Abstract:The very recent concept of metaverse highlights the importance of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), which associates with a wide variety of applications in entertainment, medical treatment, and human–machine interfaces. The current VR/AR technologies mainly rely on visual interaction, while immersive experience in VR and AR highly demands sensational feedback, such as haptic and temperature with noticeable quality in wearable or even skin-integrated formarts. In this article, we report a wearable and flexible haptic interface based on electromagnetic vibrotactile actuators with high wearability and stability. By adopting double layers of copper (Cu) coils at the top and bottom of the magnetic disc, an enhanced electromagnetic field can be generated. Additionally, the intensity of the haptic feedback can be modulated according to sensed pressure in the virtual world by adjusting the value of power input and frequency. The actuator exhibits high stability and tolerance upon environmental, cyclic, and impact resistance tests. Finally, the actuators are developed into the soft VR interfaces for mounting on forearms, fingers, and hands to verify their superiority over conventional haptic actuators in the aspects of performance and applications.

Feasibility Design of Magnetic Auxetic Tactile Sensor for Monitoring the Movement of Human Body

Abstract:Soft magnetic tactile sensors are versatile devices with potential applications in next-generation flexible electronics. We for the first time developed a new type of soft magnetic tactile sensor called soft auxetic magnetic particle sensor (soft-AMPS) and evaluated its response characteristics. Soft-AMPS contain ferromagnetic powders that are pre-magnetized in a magnetic field, followed by being mixed with a liquid resin, such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and ECO-FLEX. When an external force is applied to the sensor, the relative distance among the magnetic particles is altered, resulting in a change in the magnetic flux detected by an underlying Hall sensor. The soft-AMPS offers precise sensing with fewer I/O compared to conventional auxetic resistive sensors. Along with its soft materials, the auxetic structure reduces the required force, enhancing wearability. In our research, we compared the Poisson's ratio of the auxetic structure obtained through simulations with that of silicon material. We also compared sensing inputs based on patterns and selected structurally efficient patterns. As a result, our soft-AMPS required approximately 17% of the force to obtain the same amount of input compared to the non-auxetic version and had the sensitivity of 400% to the non-auxetic version. Additionally, the soft-AMPS is calibrated in real-time through a reference Hall sensor, confirming a resolution of 2.9 degrees. The soft-AMPS can be applied to human-robot interaction and human-machine interaction devices by detecting the movement of human body skin in a robot hand/arm or highly sensitive skin sensor.

Abstract:Dielectric elastomer actuators exhibit an unusual combination of large displacements, moderate bandwidth, low power consumption, and mechanical impedance comparable with human skin, making them attractive for haptic devices. In this article, we propose a wearable haptic communication device based on a two-by-two array of dielectric elastomer linear actuators. We briefly describe the architecture of the actuators and their mechanical and electrical integration into a wearable armband. We then characterize the actuators' force, displacement, and thermal properties in a bench-top configuration. We also report on the power and drive circuit design. Finally, we perform a set of preliminary perception evaluations on participants using our haptic device, including detection threshold tests and identification tests for locations and directions on the forearm. Human testing with individual actuators demonstrates that the broadband actuation can be easily perceived on the forearm, providing the basis for both the development of a wearable actuator array and its use in more extensive perception evaluation as described herein.

Abstract:Human skin contains highly specialized deformation receptors that allow us to intuitively and effortlessly interpret our surroundings. These sensors help us to localize touch and determine the degree of contact pressure. In addition, the innate understanding of our own body posture is also due to these mechanoreceptors. This work demonstrates a synthetic sensory–motor analog that can be 3D printed, using direct ink writing (DIW) onto soft, fluidic elastomer actuators (FEAs). This 3D printing technique uses two inks–one that is an ionically conductive hydrogel and another that is an electrically insulating silicone–which is then patterned and photopolymerized into stretchable capacitive sensors. In this paper, these sensors are used to enable tactile sensing and kinesthetic feedback in a pneumatically actuated haptic device. This capacitive skin enabled the device to detect a compressive force from a finger press of ∼ 2 N, and an internal pressurization of as low as ∼ 10 kPa.

Abstract:By focusing on vibrations, current wearable haptic devices underutilize the skin's perceptual capabilities. Devices that provide richer haptic stimuli, including contact feedback and/or variable pressure, are typically heavy and bulky due to the underlying actuator technology and the low sensitivity of hairy skin, which covers most of the body. This article presents a system architecture for compact wearable devices that deliver salient and pleasant broad-bandwidth haptic cues: Cutaneous Electrohydraulic (CUTE) devices combine a custom materials design for soft haptic electrohydraulic actuators that feature high stroke, high force, and electrical safety with a comfortable mounting strategy that places the actuator in a non-contact resting position. A prototypical wrist-wearable CUTE device produces rich tactile sensations by making and breaking contact with the skin (2.44 mm actuation stroke), applying high controllable forces (exceeding 2.3 N), and delivering vibrations at a wide range of amplitudes and frequencies (0-200 Hz). A perceptual study with 14 participants achieves 97.9% recognition accuracy across six diverse cues and verifies their pleasant and expressive feel. This system architecture for wearable devices gives unprecedented control over the haptic cues delivered to the skin, providing an elegant and discreet way to activate the user's sense of touch.

Abstract:Advanced tactile feedback systems are important tools in the field of human-machine interfaces. In this work, an airflow-assisted corona charging process is utilized to charge films made of electret material for the construction of a sandwich-structured flexible actuator system. With a voltage as low as 20 V, this flexible actuator can stimulate skin sensations for basic tactile feedback functions. Under a driving voltage of 200 V, the system can generate an output force of approximate to 55 mN, which is larger than that of the output force by cellphones under the vibration mode. Utilizing these prototype flexible electret actuators array, programmable patterns of tactile sensations can be generated on human skin according to both vibrational intensities and spatial positions. Thus, two demonstrations of human-machine interface are illustrated based on the proposed device: 1) A tactile-assisted navigation prototype with programmable commands; and 2) a tactile-based braille prototype constructed via a 6-pixels actuator array to generate designated patterns for assisting human-machine communications. As such, this system prototype has potential for applications in cognitive assistance via tactile feedbacks.

Abstract:The intuitive and effective haptic feedback interaction is essential for human–machine interfaces. However, most current commercial haptic feedback solutions are rigid, simplex, and insufficient to fully immerse users in virtual and teleoperated environments. Here, we report the design, fabrication and performance of a low-cost and lightweight self-sensing actuator (SenAct) that provides accurate force and vibration feedback to recreate the tactile perception. The SenAct shows good performance such as fast response (10 ms), high robustness (>10,000 cycles), and large output force (up to 1.55 N) with high controllable resolution (up to 0.02 N) based on the real-time closed-loop control. It is capable of providing the corresponding haptic feedback to the wearer through external force or vibration signal input. With this prototype, we presented a haptic feedback glove that supports precise operation by enhancing immersion and comprehensive sensation. Furthermore, we demonstrated it could shape appropriate interaction in different scenarios, including touching or grasping objects in virtual reality and teleoperation, illustrating its potential applications in human-in-loop interaction system and metaverse.

Abstract:Haptic feedback technology represents a frontier with revolutionary potential, particularly in virtual and augmented reality. Skin, as an underexplored sensory interface, holds tremendous potential to significantly enrich our perceptual experiences while directly impacting the fields of communication, entertainment, and medicine. This article presents a programmable, ultra-lightweight, and ultra-thin wireless wearable haptic electronic skin that achieves rapid response and large mechanical feedback force and deformation displacement output. The electronic skin comprises a series of haptic electro-hydraulic actuators, each with the weight of 0.023 g and the thickness of 199 μm. Each actuator can be independently regulated and produce a maximum normal force of 150 mN and a normal displacement of 0.58 mm, simultaneously achieving the haptic presentation of textures. Relying on a portable multi-channel control circuit system designed, each electro-hydraulic actuator of the haptic electronic skin can be precisely control to achieve various haptic patterns. Showcasing its potentials, the haptic technology aids visual-impaired individuals in reading books, provides ground navigation instructions, and enhances gaming experiences, contributing to a more immersive and authentic artificial intelligence environment.

Abstract:Tactile sensing is crucial for robots to manipulate objects successfully. However, integrating tactile sensors into robotic hands is still challenging, mainly due to the need to cover small multi-curved surfaces with several components that must be miniaturized. In this paper, we report the design of a novel magnetic-based tactile sensor to be integrated into the robotic hand of the humanoid robot Vizzy. We designed and fabricated a flexible 4 × 2 matrix of Si chips of magnetoresistive spin valve sensors that, coupled with a single small magnet, can measure contact forces from 0.1 to 5 N on multiple locations over the surface of a robotic fingertip; this design is innovative with respect to previous works in the literature, and it is made possible by careful engineering and miniaturization of the custom-made electronic components that we employ. In addition, we characterize the behavior of the sensor through a COMSOL simulation, which can be used to generate optimized designs for sensors with different geometries.

Self-Sensing Soft Pneumatic Micro Actuators for Haptic Feedback and Human-Machine Interfaces

Abstract:This paper presents a self-sensing soft pneumatic micro actuator based on a liquid metal capacitive sensor, which provides a prospect of realizing more precise and controllable fully flexible haptic interface. The flexible pneumatic actuator is less than 500 μm in radius, close to the haptic spatial resolution of human skin. It features large displacement (about 140 μm), large output force (over 160 mN) and wide frequency bandwidth (at least 60 Hz). A completely soft capacitive sensor is integrated with the actuator for self-sensing capability. Its liquid-metal electrodes can withstand large local strain brought by the actuator. The self-sensing feature is stable and repeatable under continuous stimulus over 500 cycles and exhibits good frequency characteristics.

Abstract:Realistic haptic feedback is needed to provide information to users of numerous technologies, such as virtual reality, mobile devices, and robotics. For a device to convey realistic haptic feedback, two touch sensations must be present: tactile feedback and kinesthetic feedback. Although many devices today convey tactile feedback through vibrations, most neglect to incorporate kinesthetic feedback. To address this issue, this study investigates a haptic device with the aim of conveying both kinesthetic and vibrotactile information to users. A prototype based on electrorheological fluids was designed and fabricated. By controlling the electrorheological fluid flow via applied electric fields, the device can generate a range of haptic sensations. The design centered on an elastic membrane that acts as the actuator's contact surface. Moreover, the control electronics and structural components were integrated into a compact printed circuit board, resulting in a slim device suitable for mobile applications. The device was tested using a dynamic mechanical analyzer to evaluate its performance. The device design was supported with mathematical modeling and was in agreement with experimental results. According to the just-noticeable difference analysis, this range is sufficient to transmit distinct kinesthetic and vibrotactile sensations to users, indicating that the electrorheological fluid–based actuator is capable of conveying haptic feedback.

The soft actuator is prepared by multi-layered accumulation of thin electro-active polymer (EAP) films. The multi-layered actuator is designed to produce electrically-induced convex protrusive deformation, which can be dynamically programmable for wide range of tactile stimuli. The maximum vertical protrusion is and the output force is up to 255 mN. The soft actuators are embedded into the fingertip part of a glove and front part of a forearm band, respectively. We have conducted two kinds of experiments with 15 subjects. Perceived magnitudes of actuator's protrusion and vibrotactile intensity were measured with frequency of 1 Hz and 191 Hz, respectively. Analysis of the user tests shows participants perceive variation of protrusion height at the finger pad and modulation of vibration intensity through the proposed soft actuator based tactile interface.
