Abstract:Anaerobic technologies with downstream autotrophic nitrogen removal have been proposed to enhance bioenergy recovery and transform a wastewater treatment plant from an energy consumer to an energy exporter. However, approximately 20-50 % of the produced methane is dissolved in the anaerobically treated effluent and is easily stripped into the atmosphere in the downstream aerobic process, contributing to the release of greenhouse gas emissions. This study aims to develop a solution to beneficially utilize dissolved methane to support high-level nitrogen removal from anaerobically treated mainstream wastewater. A novel technology, integrating Partial Nitritation, Anammox and Methane-dependent nitrite/nitrate reduction (i.e. PNAM) was demonstrated in a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR). With the feeding of ∼50 mg NH4+-N/L and ∼20 mg/L dissolved methane at a hydraulic retention time of 15 h, around 90 % of nitrogen and ∼100 % of dissolved methane can be removed together in the MABR. Microbial community characterization revealed that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), anammox bacteria, nitrite/nitrate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation microorganisms (n-DAMO bacteria and archaea) and aerobic methanotrophs co-existed in the established biofilm. Batch tests confirmed the active microbial pathways and showed that AOB, anammox bacteria and n-DAMO microbes were jointly responsible for the nitrogen removal, and dissolved methane was mainly removed by the n-DAMO process, with aerobic methane oxidation making a minor contribution. In addition, the established system was robust against dynamic changes in influent composition. The study provides a promising technology for the simultaneous removal of dissolved methane and nitrogen from domestic wastewater, which can support the transformation of wastewater treatment from an energy- and carbon-intensive process, to one that is energy- and carbon-neutral.

Abstract:The issue of enhancing nitrogen removal and managing dissolved methane emission in anaerobic treatment systems is a major bottleneck in its wider application to treat high-strength organic wastewater with nitrate. Herein, a novel aerobic methane oxidation, denitrification coupled to methanogenesis (AMODM) process was developed in a glucose-fed microaerobic expanded granular sludge blanket biofilm reactor (EGSBBR) through in-situ utilization of produced methane for nitrogen removal. The 162-day operation demonstrated that long-term treatment performance under the decreased COD/NO3−-N (C/N) ratio from 66.7 to 10 and the optimal C/N ratio for completing AMODM was found to be 16.7. Microbial community analysis further evidenced that Methanothrix as key methanogen predominated in the sludge bed, while Methlogaea as aerobic methane oxidizer was mainly detected in the packing bed of the hybrid system. Meanwhile, some facultative heterotrophic and dissimilated nitrate-reduction (DNRA) genera also co-existed. The profiling of key functional genes further proved concurrent occurrence of methanogenesis, aerobic methane oxidation and denitrification. Furthermore, possible microbial mechanism on AMODM process was elucidated from the prospective of targeted species interaction within the reactor. This research provides a robust and environment-friendly alternative process treating nitrate-containing organic wastewater towards efficient nitrogen removal, low resource consumption, bioenergy recovery and greenhouse gas reduction.

Abstract:The ANAMMOX process with sequential biocatalyst addition (SBA-ANAMMOX process) was developed in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) to enhance nitrogen removal from ammonium-rich wastewater containing glucose content up to 800 mgCOD/L. The nitrogen removal performance of the SBR operated with 800 mgCOD/L was significantly enhanced after sequential adding 0.5 gVSS/d of high-rate ANAMMOX granules (HASGs). Kinetics analyses showed that the HASGs possessed high nitrite affinity and strong resistance to organic matter, both of which contributed to the enhancement of autotrophic nitrogen removal. Consequently. ANAMMOX became the dominant reaction to metabolize nitrite under organic conditions; denitrification was limited due to the lack of electron acceptors (nitrite and nitrate); while sulfate reduction emerged as an important process for consumption of organic matter in the SBA-ANAMMOX system. It is suggested that employing the SBA-ANAMMOX process for treatment of organic ammonium-rich wastewater, the simultaneous removal of nitrogenous compounds as well as organic matter was quite possible. Mainstream Nitrogen and Dissolved Methane Removal through Coupling n-DAMO with Anammox in Granular Sludge at Low Temperature

Abstract:Mainstream anaerobic wastewater treatment has received increasing attention for the recovery of methane-rich biogas from biodegradable organics, but subsequent mainstream nitrogen and dissolved methane removal at low temperatures remains a critical challenge in practical applications. In this study, granular sludge coupling n-DAMO with Anammox was employed for mainstream nitrogen removal, and the dissolved methane removal potential of granular sludge at low temperatures was investigated. A stable nitrogen removal rate (0.94 kg N m-3 d-1 at 20 °C) was achieved with a high-level effluent quality (<3.0 mg TN L-1) in a lab-scale membrane granular sludge reactor (MGSR). With decreasing temperature, the nitrogen removal rate dropped to 0.55 kg N m-3 d-1 at 10 °C, while the effluent concentration remained <1.0 mg TN L-1. The granular sludge with an average diameter of 1.8 mm proved to retain sufficient biomass (27 g VSS L-1), which enabled n-DAMO and Anammox activity at a hydraulic retention time as low as 2.16 h even at 10 °C. 16S rRNA gene sequencing and scanning electron microscopy revealed a stable community composition and compact structure of granular sludge during long-term operation. Energy recovery could be maximized by recovering most of the dissolved methane in mainstream anaerobic effluent, as only a small amount of dissolved methane was capable of supporting denitrifying methanotrophs in granular sludge, which enabled high-level nitrogen removal.

Abstract:Granular sludge combined n-DAMO and Anammox (n-D/A) is an energy-efficient biotechnique for the simultaneous removal of nitrogen and dissolved methane from wastewater. However, the lack of knowledge so far about the metabolic interactions between n-DAMO and Anammox in response to operation condition in granular sludge restrains the development of this biotechnology. To address this gap, three independent membrane granular sludge reactors (MGSRs) were designed to carry out the granule-based n-D/A process under different conditions. We provided the first deep insights into the metabolic interactions between n-DAMO and Anammox in granular sludge via combined metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses. Our study unveiled a clear population shift of n-DAMO community from Candidatus Methanoperedens to Candidatus Methylomirabilis from sidestream to mainstream. Candidatus Methanoperedens with relative abundance of 25.2% played the major role in nitrate reduction and methane oxidation under sidestream condition, indicated by the high expression activities of mcrA and narG. Candidatus Methylomirabilis dominated the microbial community under mainstream condition with relative abundance of 32.1%, supported by the high expression activities of pmoA and hao . Furthermore, a transition of Anammox population from Candidatus Kuenenia to Candidatus Brocadia was also observed from sidestream to mainstream. Candidatus Kuenenia and Candidatus Brocadia jointly contributed to the primary anaerobic ammonium oxidation suggested by the high expression value of hdh and hzs. Candidatus Methylomirabilis was speculated to perform ammonium oxidation mediated by pMMO under mainstream condition. These findings might help to reveal the microbial interactions and ecological niches of n-DAMO and Anammox microorganisms, shedding light on the optimization and management of the granule-based n-D/A system.

Abstract:The reject water of anaerobic digestors still contains high levels of methane and ammonium that need to be treated before these effluents can be discharged to surface waters. Simultaneous anaerobic methane and ammonium oxidation performed by nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane-oxidizing(N-damo) microorganisms and anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing(anammox) bacteria is considered a potential solution to this challenge. Here, a stable coculture of N-damo archaea, N-damo bacteria, and anammox bacteria was obtained in a sequencing batch reactor fed with methane, ammonium, and nitrite. Nitrite and ammonium removal rates of up to 455 mg N-NO2− L−1 day−1 and 228 mg N-NH4+ L−1 were reached. All nitrate produced by anammox bacteria (57 mg N-NO3− L−1 day−1) was consumed, leading to a nitrogen removal efficiency of 97.5%. In the nitrite and ammonium limited state, N-damo and anammox bacteria each constituted about 30–40% of the culture and were separated as granules and flocs in later stages of the reactor operation. The N-damo archaea increased up to 20% and mainly resided in the granular biomass with their N-damo bacterial counterparts. About 70% of the nitrite in the reactor was removed via the anammox process, and batch assays confirmed that anammox activity in the reactor was close to its maximal potential activity. In contrast, activity of N-damo bacteria was much higher in batch, indicating that these bacteria were performing suboptimally in the sequencing batch reactor, and would probably be outcompeted by anammox bacteria if ammonium was supplied in excess. Together these results indicate that the combination of N-damo and anammox can be implemented for the removal of methane at the expense of nitrite and nitrate in future wastewater treatment systems.

Abstract:Nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-damo) is a newly discovered bioprocess that reduces nitrite to dinitrogen with methane as electron donor, which has promising potential to remove nitrogen from wastewater. In this work, a lab-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was operated for 609 days with methane as the sole external electron donor. In the SBR, nitrite in synthetic wastewater was removed continuously; the final volumetric nitrogen removal rate was 12.22±0.02 mg N L −1 day −1 and the percentage of nitrogen removal was 98.5 ± 0.2 %. Microbial community analysis indicated that denitrifying methanotrophs dominated (60–70 %) the population of the final sludge. Notably, activity testing and microbial analysis both suggested that heterotrophic denitrifiers existed in the reactor throughout the operation period. After 609 days, the activity testing indicated the nitrogen removal percentage of heterotrophic denitrification was 17 ± 2 % and that of n-damo was 83 ± 2 %. A possible mutualism may be developed between the dominated denitrifying methanotrophs and the associated heterotrophs through cross-feed. Heterotrophs may live on the microbial products excreted by denitrifying methanotrophs and provide growth factors that are required by denitrifying methanotrophs.

Abstract:Combining nitrate/nitrite dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) is a promising sustainable wastewater treatment technology, which simultaneously achieve nitrogen removal and methane emission mitigation. However, the practical application of n-DAMO has been greatly limited by its extremely slow growth-rate and low reaction rate. This work proposes an innovative Membrane BioTrickling Filter (MBTF), which consist of hollow fiber membrane for effective methane supplementation and polyurethane sponge as support media for the attachment and growth of biofilm coupling n-DAMO with Anammox. When steady state with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6.00 h was reached, above 99.9% of nitrogen was removed from synthetic sidestream wastewater at a rate of 3.99 g N L-1 d-1. This system presented robust capacity to withstand unstable partial nitritation effluent, achieving complete nitrogen removal at a varied nitrite to ammonium ratio in the range of 1.10-1.40. It is confirmed that n-DAMO and Anammox microorganisms jointly dominated the microbial community by pyrosequencing technology. The complete nitrogen removal potential at high-rate and efficient biomass retention (12.4 g VSS L-1) of MBTF offers promising alternative for sustainable wastewater treatment by the combination of n-DAMO and Anammox.

Abstract:The granular bioreactor, characterized by excellent settling velocity, high rate and low cost is an ideal choice for achieving coupled nitrate/nitrite dependent denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) process. To fundamentally understand its underlining mechanisms and provide suggestions for process optimization, a granule-based model framework was developed to describe simultaneous anaerobic methane and ammonium oxidation by functional microbes. The proposed model was evaluated based on long-term experimental data from two membrane granular sludge reactors (MGSRs) with different operational conditions. The model possessed of good predictive ability to reproduce removal rates and effluent concentrations of nitrogen species. The predicted biomass abundance in two MGSRs and stratified microbial distribution along granule depth were consistent with experimental observations. The estimated parameter values, with good identifiability and reliability indicated a stimulated growth of DAMO archaea in MGSRs. Both hydraulic retention times (HRTs) and granule sizes have influences on microbial abundance in the MGSR and community distribution inside granules. Within the investigated HRTs from 1.4 h to 20 h and granule sizes from 500 μm to 2900 μm, it was revealed that a proper control of relatively short HRTs and small granule sizes resulted in an increased fraction of DAMO archaea and a reduced DAMO bacteria abundance with AnAOB less impacted, which would lower the required nitrite nitrogen to ammonium nitrogen ratio in the nitritation reactor (prior unit) and thus minimize operational cost in sidestream treatment lines.

Abstract:Denitrification and methanogenesis of a synthetic wastewater were obtained in a single-stage process using anaerobic suspended granular sludge reactor.The reactor was initially inoculated with methanogenic granular sludge and was gradually adapted to nitrate by increasing the nitrate concentration in the influent.Excess carbon not utilized for denitrification was converted to methane.During steady stage at a loading of 0.75 kgNO-3-N · m-3d-1 and 14.1 kgCOD · m-3d-1,nitrate removal of over 99.5% and carbon removal of 90.1% were achieved.Lab analysis showed that nearly the entire nitrate was recovered as nitrogen,indicating that true denitrification occurred.

Abstract:Anammox (anaerobic ammonium oxidation) is an environment-friendly and cost-efficient nitrogen-removal process currently applied to high-ammonium-loaded wastewaters such as anaerobic digester effluents. In these wastewaters, dissolved methane is also present and should be removed to prevent greenhouse gas emissions into the environment. Potentially, another recently discovered microbial pathway, n-damo (nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation) could be used for this purpose. In the present paper, we explore the feasibility of simultaneously removing methane and ammonium anaerobically, starting with granules from a full-scale anammox bioreactor. We describe the development of a co-culture of anammox and n-damo bacteria using a medium containing methane, ammonium and nitrite. The results are discussed in the context of other recent studies on the application of anaerobic methane- and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The process of nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) coupled with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) is one of groundbreaking discoveries for nitrogen removal and methane emission reduction from wastewater simultaneously. Yet its treatment of mainstream wastewater at low temperature is still a major challenge. In this work, a one-dimensional granular sludge model incorporating Arrhenius conversion for temperature effects was constructed to depict the relationships among n-DAMO microorganisms and Anammox. The model framework was successfully evaluated with 380 days measurement data from a membrane granular sludge reactor (MGSR) operated at temperature of 20–10 °C and fed with ammonium and nitrite. The model could satisfactorily predict the kinetics of nitrogen removal rates, effluent nitrogen concentrations and biomass fractions in MGSR at varying temperatures. Despite the decrease in microbial activity of functional microorganisms, the coupled n-DAMO and Anammox process based on granule system in mainstream wastewater treatment achieved a TN removal efficiency of about 98 % and a stable nitrogen removal rate of 0.55 g L −1 d −1 . The model developed is expected to facilitate fundamentally understanding the underlying mechanisms of the coupled process and provide proposals for its practical engineering application in wastewater treatment plants.

Abstract:The mainstream deammonification of municipal wastewater has been recognized as one of the greatest challenges in wastewater engineering. The conventional activated sludge process has disadvantages of high energy input and sludge production. To tackle this situation, an innovative A-B process, where an anaerobic biofilm reactor (AnBR) was functioned as the A stage for energy recovery, and a step-feed membrane bioreactor (MBR) was functioned as the B stage for mainstream deammonification, was constructed for carbon-neutral wastewater treatment. For addressing the challenge associated with selective retention of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) over nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB), a multi-parameter control-based operation strategy was developed with synergistic control of influent COD redistribution, dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration and sludge retention time (SRT) in the innovative AnBR – step-feed MBR system. Results showed that more than 85% of wastewater COD could be removed with the direct production of methane gas in the AnBR. A relatively stable partial nitritation, which is a prerequisite of anammox, was achieved with the successful suppression of NOB, leading to 98% of ammonium-N and 73% of total nitrogen removed. Anammox bacteria could well survive and enrich in the integrated system, and the contribution of anammox to the total nitrogen removal was more than 70% at optimal conditions. Reactions network involved in the nitrogen transformation in the integrated system was further constructed through the mass balance and microbial community structure analyses. Consequently, this study demonstrated a practically feasible process configuration with high operation and control flexibility towards stable mainstream deammonification of municipal wastewater.

Abstract:The granulation of simultaneous partial nitrification and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) was investigated in a single, oxygen-limited, sequencing batch reactor. In this research, the reactor was started anaerobically and fed using the synthetic medium described by Van de Graaf et al. to cultivate Anammox biomass after inoculation with methanogenic granular sludge. Subsequently, mixture gas (air and nitrogen gas) was supplied to the reactor and a nitrifying population developed. Research results indicated that autotrophic granules was cultivated successfully by controlling the dissolved oxygen in the reactor between 0.3 and 0.5 mg/L, and a total inorganic nitrogen removal efficiency of 63.7% was obtained with a higher nitrogen load increased by reducing HRT to 3 days. It was also seen that the Ca and P concentrations of the feeding medium are important factors that influence the autotrophic granules from process running. When the Ca and P concentrations were exceeded the necessary quantity, salt precipitation was observed, interfered with microbial activity, and caused a decrease of the nitrogen removal rate of the system. After diminishing adequately the Ca and P concentrations, salt precipitation was avoided and the activity of the system restored quickly. Moreover, visual indication and scanning election microscopy observation revealed the process of sludge evolution and inner structure of the granules.

Abstract:Granular sludge exhibits unique features, including rapid settling velocity, high loading rate and relative insensitivity against inhibitors, thus being a favorable platform for the cultivation of slow-growing and vulnerable microorganisms, such as anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria and nitrite/nitrate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) microorganisms. While anammox granules have been widely applied, little is known about how to speed up the granulation process of n-DAMO microorganisms, which grow even slower than anammox bacteria. In this study, we used mature anammox granules as biotic carriers to embed n-DAMO microorganisms, which obtained combined anammox + n-DAMO granules within 6 months. The results of whole-granule 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing showed the coexistence of anammox bacteria, n-DAMO bacteria and n-DAMO archaea. The microbial stratification along granule radius was further elucidated by cryosection-16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, showing the dominance of n-DAMO archaea and anammox bacteria at inner and outer layers, respectively. Moreover, the images of cryosection-fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) verified this stratification and also indicated a shift in microbial stratification. Specifically, n-DAMO bacteria and n-DAMO archaea attached to the anammox granule surface initially, which moved to the inner layer after 4-months operation. On the basis of combined anammox + n-DAMO granules, a practically useful nitrogen removal rate (1.0 kg N/m3/d) was obtained from sidestream wastewater, which provides new avenue to remove nitrogen from wastewater using methane as carbon source.

Abstract:To overcome the significant challenges associated with nitrite supply and nitrate residues in mainstream anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox)-based processes, this study developed a combined solid-phase denitrification (SPD) and anammox process for low-strength nitrogen removal without the addition of nitrite. The SPD step was performed in a packed-bed reactor containing poly-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hyroxyvelate (PHBV) prior to employing the anammox granular sludge reactor in the continuous-flow mode. The removal efficiency of total inorganic nitrogen reached 95.7 ± 1.2% under a nitrogen loading rate of 0.18 ± 0.01 kg N·m3·d-1, and it required 1.02 mol of nitrate to remove 1 mol of ammonium nitrogen. The PHBV particles not only served as biofilm carriers for the symbiosis of hydrolytic bacteria (HB) and denitrifying bacteria (DB), but also carbon sources that facilitated the coupling of partial denitrification and anammox in the granules. Metagenomic sequencing analysis indicated that Burkholderiales was the most abundant HB genus in SPD. The metabolic correlations between DB (Betaproteobacteria, Rhodocyclaceae, and Anaerolineae) and anammox bacteria (Candidatus Brocadiac and Kuenenia) in the granules were confirmed through microbial co-occurrence networks analysis and functional gene annotations. Additionally, the genes encoding nitrate reductase (Nap) and nitrite reductase (Nir) in DB primarily facilitated nitrate reduction, thereby supplying nitric oxide to anammox bacteria for subsequent nitrogen removal with hydrazine synthase (Hzs) and hydrazine dehydrogenase (Hdh). The findings provide insights into microbial metabolism within combined SPD and anammox processes, thus advancing the development of mainstream anammox-based processes in engineering applications.

Abstract:Nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-damo) is mediated by bacteria that anaerobically oxidize methane coupled with nitrite reduction and is a potential bioprocess for wastewater treatment. In this work, the effect of reactor configuration on n-damo bacterial cultivation was investigated. A magnetically stirred gas lift reactor (MSGLR), a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), and a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) were selected to cultivate the bacteria. Microbial community was monitored by using quantitative PCR, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, pmoA gene sequencing, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The effects of substrate inhibition, methane mass transfer, and biomass washout in the three reactors were focused on. The results indicated that the MSGLR had the best performance among the three reactor systems, with the highest total and specific n-damo activities. Its maximum volumetric nitrogen removal rate was up to 76.9 mg N L−1 day−1, which was higher than previously reported values (5.1–37.8 mg N L−1 d−1).

Abstract:An innovative process, the oxygen-limited membrane bioreactor seeded with anaerobic granular sludge, wasproposed and its performance investigated for concurrent removal of organic substances and nitrogen from synthetic domestic wastewaters. An air diffuser was installed just above the granular sludge bed to supply air to the reactor at an intermittent mode. The internal recycle from the upper part of the reactor to the bottom was introduced to provide the granular sludge bed under the oxygen-limited conditions. The oxygen addition rates were controlled at 3–4 g O2 1−1d−1. The total COD removal efficiency of more than 94% was achieved throughout the whole operation period. N was removed through the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification process that took place in the granular sludge bed. TN levels decreased with the decrease of ammonium levels, indicating that nitrification was the rate-limiting step. The TN removal efficiency reached 80–91% at an hydraulic retention time of 15 h. Nitrate was scarcely detected and nitrite was the main NOx-N species in the effluent, indicating that nitrite oxidizers were inhibited in the system.

Abstract:Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox)-based nitrogen removal saves aeration energy and organic carbon costs, attributed to its anaerobic and autotrophic nature. However, due to the slow growth of anaerobic ammonium oxidation bacteria (AnAOB), drawbacks including long startup time and sensitivity to toxins still hamper the application of anammox-based processes. To cope with the slow growth of AnAOB, various bioreactor configurations have been investigated for the capability of retaining anammox biomass, among which, the expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor is a promising option. In this study, two laboratory-scale EGSB reactors were used to gain insights of microbial population and their response to amending biofilm-carriers, aiming to enhance the biomass retention of AnAOB. The respective ammonium and nitrite removal efficiencies were up to over 90%, and the overall nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) was stable at over 70%, in the EGSB reactor amended with carriers (CEGSB). Compared to the control EGSB, CEGSB’s observed performance was more stable during the 236-day operational period. The abundance of AnAOB reached 22% in the EGSB and 49% in the CEGSB. It was also observed that Ca. Brocadia (14.25%) and Asahi BRW2 (33.19%) coexisted in the CEGSB. The dynamics of major metabolisms and functional genes involved in nitrogen conversion were further observed by FAPROTAX based on the taxonomic data, providing more insights into the functions of the microbial communities.

Abstract:The integration of denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) simultaneously converts ammonium, methane, and oxidized nitrogen species (nitrite and nitrate) to harmless N2 and CO2. This integrated and complementary process achieves the nitrogen and carbon cycles in wastewater with the potential to be applied widely at full scale to realize energy-positive wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In this review, we summarize the collaborative and competitive interactions of DAMO–Anammox microorganisms and systematically evaluate the challenges for the full-scale application of integrated DAMO–Anammox for wastewater treatment, including their extremely slow growth rate, low metabolic activity, and limited nitrogen and methene removal rate. We examine comprehensively the critical role of bioreactor design (attached, suspended, and granular sludge systems) for biomass retention and substrate transfer. The paper also discussed strategies involving trace elements (Cu(II) and Fe(II)), Zero Valent Iron (ZVI), and External Electrostatic Fields (EEFs) to enhance the DAMO–Anammox microbial activities. Further review is provided on the addition of Humics, quinone-compound anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDs), Fe(III), Mn(IV) as electron acceptors through extracellular electron transfer (EET) and couple with autotrophic denitrification (AuDen) (H2S and Fe(II)) to accelerate nitrogen and methane removal.
