Abstract:Longitudinal tracking studies have revealed consistent differences in the migration patterns of individuals from the same populations. The sources or processes causing this individual variation are largely unresolved. As a result, it is mostly unknown how much, how fast and when animals can adjust their migrations to changing environments. We studied the ontogeny of migration in a long-distance migratory shorebird, the black-tailed godwit Limosa limosa limosa, a species known to exhibit marked individuality in the migratory routines of adults. By observing how and when these individual differences arise, we aimed to elucidate whether individual differences in migratory behaviour are inherited or emerge as a result of developmental plasticity. We simultaneously tracked juvenile and adult godwits from the same breeding area on their south- and northward migrations. To determine how and when individual differences begin to arise, we related juvenile migration routes, timing and mortality rates to hatch date and hatch year. Then, we compared adult and juvenile migration patterns to identify potential age-dependent differences. In juveniles, the timing of their first southward departure was related to hatch date. However, their subsequent migration routes, orientation, destination, migratory duration and likelihood of mortality were unrelated to the year or timing of migration, or their sex. Juveniles left the Netherlands after all tracked adults. They then flew non-stop to West Africa more often and incurred higher mortality rates than adults. Some juveniles also took routes and visited stopover sites far outside the well-documented adult migratory corridor. Such juveniles, however, were not more likely to die. We found that juveniles exhibited different migratory patterns than adults, but no evidence that these behaviours are under natural selection. We thus eliminate the possibility that the individual differences observed among adult godwits are present at hatch or during their first migration. This adds to the mounting evidence that animals possess the developmental plasticity to change their migration later in life in response to environmental conditions as those conditions are experienced.

High dispersal ability versus migratory traditions: Fine-scale population structure and post-glacial colonisation in bar-tailed godwits

Abstract:In migratory animals, high mobility may reduce population structure through increased dispersal and enable adaptive responses to environmental change, whereas rigid migratory routines predict low dispersal, increased structure, and limited flexibility to respond to change. We explore the global population structure and phylogeographic history of the bar-tailed godwit, Limosa lapponica, a migratory shorebird known for making the longest non-stop flights of any landbird. Using nextRAD sequencing of 14,318 single-nucleotide polymorphisms and scenario-testing in an Approximate Bayesian Computation framework, we infer that bar-tailed godwits existed in two main lineages at the last glacial maximum, when much of their present-day breeding range persisted in a vast, unglaciated Siberian-Beringian refugium, followed by admixture of these lineages in the eastern Palearctic. Subsequently, population structure developed at both longitudinal extremes: in the east, a genetic cline exists across latitude in the Alaska breeding range of subspecies L. l. baueri; in the west, one lineage diversified into three extant subspecies L. l. lapponica, taymyrensis, and yamalensis, the former two of which migrate through previously glaciated western Europe. In the global range of this long-distance migrant, we found evidence of both (1) fidelity to rigid behavioural routines promoting fine-scale geographic population structure (in the east) and (2) flexibility to colonise recently available migratory flyways and non-breeding areas (in the west). Our results suggest that cultural traditions in highly mobile vertebrates can override the expected effects of high dispersal ability on population structure, and provide insights for the evolution and flexibility of some of the world's longest migrations.
Revisiting Perdeck's massive avian migration experiments debunks alternative social interpretations

Abstract:Whether avian migrants can adapt to their changing world depends on the relative importance of genetic and environmental variation for the timing and direction of migration. In the classic series of field experiments on avian migration, A. C. Perdeck discovered that translocated juveniles failed to reach goal areas, whereas translocated adults performed 'true-goal navigation'. His translocations of > 14 000 common starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) suggested that genetic mechanisms guide juveniles into a population-specific direction, i.e. 'vector navigation'. However, alternative explanations involving social learning after release in juveniles could not be excluded. By adding historical data from translocation sites, data that was unavailable in Perdeck's days, and by integrated analyses including the original data, we could not explain juvenile migrations from possible social information upon release. Despite their highly social behaviour, our findings are consistent with the idea that juvenile starlings follow inherited information and independently reach their winter quarters. Similar to more solitarily migrating songbirds, starlings would require genetic change to adjust the migration route in response to global change.

Abstract:Long-distance migratory animals must contend with global climate change, but they differ greatly in whether and how they adjust. Species that socially learn their migration routes may have an advantage in this process compared to other species, as learned changes that are passed on to the next generation can speed up adjustment. However, evidence from the wild that social learning helps migrants adjust to environmental change is absent. Here, we study the behavioral processes by which barnacle geese (<i>Branta leucopsis</i>) adjust spring-staging site choice along the Norwegian coast, which appears to be a response to climate change and population growth. We compared individual-based models to an empirical description of geese colonizing a new staging site in the 1990s. The data included 43 years of estimated annual food conditions and goose numbers at both staging sites (1975–2017), as well as annual age-dependent switching events between the two staging sites from one year to the next (2000–2017). Using Approximate Bayesian Computation, we assessed the relative likelihood of models with different "decision rules", which define how individuals choose a staging site. In the best performing model, individuals traveled in groups and staging site choice was made by the oldest group member. Groups normally returned to the same staging site each year, but exhibited a higher probability of switching staging site in years with larger numbers of geese at the staging site. The decision did not depend on food availability in the current year. Switching rates between staging sites decreased with age, which was best explained by a higher probability of switching between groups by younger geese, and not by young geese being more responsive to current conditions. We found no evidence that the experienced foraging conditions in previous years affected staging site choice. Our findings demonstrate that copying behavior and density-dependent group decisions explain how geese adjust their migratory habits rapidly in response to changes in food availability and competition. We conclude that considering social processes can be essential to understand how migratory animals respond to changing environments.

Abstract:Background: Long-distance migratory birds spend most of their annual cycle in non-breeding areas. During this period birds must meet their daily nutritional needs and acquire additional energy intake to deal with future events of the annual cycle. Therefore, patterns of space use and movement may emerge as an efficient strategy to maintain a trade-off between acquisition and conservation of energy during the non-breeding season. However, there is still a paucity of research addressing this issue, especially in trans-hemispheric migratory birds. Methods: Using GPS-tracking data and a recently developed continuous-time stochastic process modeling framework, we analyzed fine-scale movements in a non-breeding population of Hudsonian godwits (Limosa haemastica), a gregarious long-distance migratory shorebird. Specifically, we evaluated if these extreme migrants exhibit restricted, shared, and periodic patterns of space use on one of their main non-breeding grounds in southern South America. Finally, via a generalized additive model, we tested if the observed patterns were consistent within a circadian cycle. Results: Overall, godwits showed finely-tuned range-residence and periodic movements (each 24-72 h), being similar between day and night. Remarkably, range-resident individuals segregated spatially into three groups. In contrast, a smaller fraction of godwits displayed unpredictable and irregular movements, adding functional connectivity within the population. Conclusions: In coastal non-breeding areas where resource availability is highly predictable due to tidal cycles, range-resident strategies during both the day and night are the common pattern in a long-distance shorebird population. Alternative patterns exhibited by a fraction of non-resident godwits provide functional connectivity and suggest that the exploratory tendency may be essential for information acquisition and associated with individual traits. The methodological approach we have used contributes to elucidate how the composition of movement phases operates during the non-breeding season in migratory species and can be replicated in non-migratory species as well. Finally, our results highlight the importance of considering movement as a continuum within the annual cycle.

Abstract:Abstract Globally, bird migration is occurring earlier in the year, consistent with climate-related changes in breeding resources. Although often attributed to phenotypic plasticity, there is no clear demonstration of long-term population advancement in avian migration through individual plasticity. Using direct observations of bar-tailed godwits ( Limosa lapponica ) departing New Zealand on a 16,000-km journey to Alaska, we show that migration advanced by six days during 2008–2020, and that within-individual advancement was sufficient to explain this population-level change. However, in individuals tracked for the entire migration (50 total tracks of 36 individuals), earlier departure did not lead to earlier arrival or breeding in Alaska, due to prolonged stopovers in Asia. Moreover, changes in breeding-site phenology varied across Alaska, but were not reflected in within-population differences in advancement of migratory departure. We demonstrate that plastic responses can drive population-level changes in timing of long-distance migration, but also that behavioral and environmental constraints en route may yet limit adaptive responses to global change.

[Nursing care of a preschool-age child with cellulites induced by phagocyte deficiency].

Abstract:Phagocyte, the first inflammatory response of the immune system, is an important component of the wound healing process. For children with low immunity who suffer from phagocyte deficiency, even a small wound will result in a rapid response to systemic infection, poor wound healing, and hospitalization for treatment. Such treatments often bring enormous pressure to bear on the child, with serious impacts on his or her psychological well-being as well as on that of the family. This paper applies the concept of preschool-age child development and "TIME" criteria proposed by Dr. Schultz to assess pathological changes in poor healing wounds in order to promote wound healing and shorten necessary hospitalization times. Teaching the primary caregiver (oftentimes the patient's mother) adequate at-home wound dressing skills to reduce re-admission rates is also a main focus of nursing care. This article integrates related articles in the literature with a case analysis by reporting on an individualized nursing intervention for a child with cellulites induced by phagocyte deficiency. It is hoped that recommendations provide a valuable clinical reference for nursing colleagues to care for children suffering from phagocyte deficiency.

Abstract:Abstract What determines why some birds migrate and others do not? This question is fundamental to understanding how migratory systems are responding to environmental changes, but the causes of individual migratory behaviours have proven difficult to isolate. We show that, in a partially migratory population of Eurasian oystercatchers ( Haematopus ostralegus ), the migratory behaviour of progeny follows paternal but not maternal behaviour, and is unrelated to timing of hatching or fledging. These findings highlight the key role of social interactions in shaping the migratory behaviour of new generations, and thus the spatio-temporal distribution of migratory populations.

Abstract:Endogenous programs that regulate annual cycles have been shown for many taxa, including protists, arthropods, fish, mammals and birds. In migration biology, these programs are best known in songbirds. The majority of songbirds rely on a genetic program inherited from their parents that will guide them during their first solo-migration. The phenotypic components of the program are crucial for their individual fitness and survival, and include time components, direction, and distance. This program is constructed to both guide behavior and to regulate flexible responses to the environment at different stages of the annual cycle. The migration program is driven by a circannual rhythm, allowing for, and resetting, carry-over effects. With experience, the migration decisions of individual migrants may be based on information learnt on breeding sites, wintering sites, and <i>en route</i>. At the population level, substantial variation in route choice and timing of migration may be explained by inherited variation of program components, by interactions with environmental and social factors, and by individual learning. In this review we will explore the components of endogenous migration programs and discuss in what ways they can lead to flexibility and variation in migration behavior.

Abstract:Eco-evolutionary responses to environmentally induced selection fundamentally depend on magnitudes of genetic variation underlying traits that facilitate population persistence. Additive genetic variances and associated heritabilities can vary across environmental conditions, especially for labile phenotypic traits expressed through early life. However, short-term seasonal dynamics of genetic variances are rarely quantified in wild populations, precluding inference on eco-evolutionary outcomes in seasonally dynamic systems. This limitation applies to seasonal migration versus residence, constituting one key trait where rapid microevolution could rescue partially migratory populations from changing seasonal environments. We fitted novel quantitative genetic ‘capture–recapture animal models’ to multi-generational pedigree and year-round resighting data from 11 cohorts of European shags ( Gulosus aristotelis ), to estimate season-specific additive genetic variances in liabilities to migrate, and in resulting expression of migration, in juveniles’ first autumn and winter. We demonstrate non-negligible genetic variation underlying early-life migration, with twice as large additive genetic variances and heritabilities in autumn than winter. Since early-life survival selection on migration typically occurs in winter, highest genetic variation and strongest selection are seasonally desynchronized. Our results reveal complex within- and among-year dynamics of early-life genetic and phenotypic variation, demonstrating that adequate inference of eco-evolutionary outcomes requires quantifying microevolutionary potential on appropriate scales and seasonal timeframes.

Abstract:Migratory routes and remote wintering quarters in birds are often species and even population specific. It has been known for decades that songbirds mainly migrate solitarily, and that the migration direction is genetically controlled. Yet, the underlying genetic mechanisms remain unknown. To investigate the genetic basis of migration direction, we track genotyped willow warblers Phylloscopus trochilus from a migratory divide in Sweden, where South-West migrating, and South-East migrating subspecies form a hybrid swarm. We find evidence that migration direction follows a dominant inheritance pattern with epistatic interaction between two loci explaining 74% of variation. Consequently, most hybrids migrate similarly to one of the parental subspecies, and therefore do not suffer from the cost of following an inferior, intermediate route. This has significant implications for understanding the selection processes that maintain narrow migratory divides.

When slow explorers are fast: Personality‐related differences in timing of migration in Red Knots (Calidris canutus)

Abstract:The timing of migration varies significantly among individuals, even within populations sharing breeding sites. Consistent individual behavioural differences, known as personality traits, have been linked to variation in movement behaviour. However, little attention has been given to investigating whether personality traits can explain such variation in the timing of migration. We studied post‐breeding migration of Red Knots Calidris canutus islandica breeding in the High Arctic and wintering in European coastal areas. We captured Red Knots in the Dutch Wadden Sea, a main non‐breeding and moulting site, and assessed their exploration behaviour, a personality trait, before releasing them with colour‐rings. We first investigated whether arrival timing in marine areas was associated with exploration speed. Secondly, we asked whether slow explorers were more likely to fly non‐stop to the Wadden Sea compared with fast explorers, as faster explorers were expected to move more and visit more staging sites. To determine arrival timing in marine non‐breeding areas and non‐stop flights to the Wadden Sea, we analysed isotope signatures in blood samples collected after capture, as these differ between the terrestrial breeding grounds (arthropod diet) and marine non‐breeding and moulting sites (benthic invertebrate diet). Thirdly, we estimated arrival time in the Wadden Sea based on primary moult progress, allowing us to examine the relationship between arrival timing estimated from isotope values and the onset of moult. Our findings revealed that slower exploring Red Knots departed earlier from the breeding site and were more likely to fly non‐stop to the Wadden Sea than were faster exploring individuals. Arrival timing to marine areas as estimated from isotope analyses predicted arrival timing in the Wadden Sea (via moult progress) but this relationship exhibited significant variation, possibly due to individual differences in the use of staging sites en route. By migrating early, slower explorers can better outpace the aerial predators also arriving at the Wadden Sea moulting site and thereby reduce mortality risk due to predation.

Abstract:Early‐life expression of partial migration and associated selection impacts spatio‐seasonal dynamics but is rarely quantified. This article demonstrates strong fluctuating survival selection on early‐life migration over 11 cohorts. However, the degree of migration did not covary with the direction of selection, restricting the potential for adaptive responses to changing seasonal environments. Population dynamic and eco‐evolutionary responses to environmental variation and change fundamentally depend on combinations of within‐ and among‐cohort variation in the phenotypic expression of key life‐history traits, and on corresponding variation in selection on those traits. Specifically, in partially migratory populations, spatio‐seasonal dynamics depend on the degree of adaptive phenotypic expression of seasonal migration versus residence, where more individuals migrate when selection favours migration. Opportunity for adaptive (or, conversely, maladaptive) expression could be particularly substantial in early life, through the initial development of migration versus residence. However, within‐ and among‐cohort dynamics of early‐life migration, and of associated survival selection, have not been quantified in any system, preventing any inference on adaptive early‐life expression. Such analyses have been precluded because data on seasonal movements and survival of sufficient young individuals, across multiple cohorts, have not been collected. We undertook extensive year‐round field resightings of 9359 colour‐ringed juvenile European shags Gulosus aristotelis from 11 successive cohorts in a partially migratory population. We fitted Bayesian multi‐state capture‐mark‐recapture models to quantify early‐life variation in migration versus residence and associated survival across short temporal occasions through each cohort's first year from fledging, thereby quantifying the degree of adaptive phenotypic expression of migration within and across years. All cohorts were substantially partially migratory, but the degree and timing of migration varied considerably within and among cohorts. Episodes of strong survival selection on migration versus residence occurred both on short timeframes within years, and cumulatively across entire first years, generating instances of instantaneous and cumulative net selection that would be obscured at coarser temporal resolutions. Further, the magnitude and direction of selection varied among years, generating strong fluctuating survival selection on early‐life migration across cohorts, as rarely evidenced in nature. Yet, the degree of migration did not strongly covary with the direction of selection, indicating limited early‐life adaptive phenotypic expression. These results reveal how dynamic early‐life expression of and selection on a key life‐history trait, seasonal migration, can emerge across seasonal, annual, and multi‐year timeframes, yet be substantially decoupled. This restricts the potential for adaptive phenotypic, microevolutionary, and population dynamic responses to changing seasonal environments.

Abstract:Animal migration is a fascinating phenomenon that has puzzled mankind since the time of ancient Greece. It is a process widespread across a varied range of taxa and it shines especially in birds which, because of their mobility, display an amazing diversity of routes and strategies. With the advances in tracking devices and improvements of sequencing technologies, recent work provides support for a strong genetic influence of several migratory traits across different species. However, there is little to no evidence of any common sequence‐based mechanism behind this complex behaviour, nor any unifying principle explaining it. We review how the focus in understanding the genetic basis for migratory traits should be shifted towards studying regulatory mechanisms of gene expression instead of the traditional candidate gene approach. Importantly, a role for gene expression as the underlying driver of the migratory phenotype can resolve the opposing and often strong views that migration is mainly either under genetic or environmental influence. We emphasise that research should take new directions, reinforcing that there is probably not a common genetic basis for how migration is regulated in birds. Here, we support the notion that 1) migration can only evolve this fast if it is a quantitative trait with a large standing variation; 2) the main drivers for migration evolution seem to be diverse expression–regulation mechanisms rather than gene‐level polymorphisms; and 3) non‐coding sequences of the genome, epigenetics and structural variation might be more important in shaping complex traits than previously thought. Further, we present several hypotheses outlining how these regulatory mechanisms might work across different bird species defining certain migratory traits.

Abstract:Human-induced environmental changes are shifting the migration patterns of birds worldwide. Species are adjusting migration timings, shortening and diversifying migratory routes, or even completely disrupting migration and transitioning towards residency. Whilst the ultimate causes driving changes in migratory patterns are well established, the underlying mechanisms by which migratory species adapt to environmental change remain unclear. Here, we studied the mechanisms driving the recent and rapid loss of migratory behaviour in Iberian white storks , a long-lived and previously fully migratory species through the African-Eurasian flyway. We combined 25 years of census data, GPS-tracking data from 213 individuals (80 adults and 133 first-year juveniles) followed for multiple years, and whole-genome sequencing, to disentangle whether within- (phenotypic flexibility) or between- (developmental plasticity or microevolution, through selection) individual shifts in migratory behaviour over time can explain the observed population-level changes towards residency. Between 1995 and 2020, the proportion of individuals no longer migrating and remaining in Southern Europe year-round increased dramatically, from 18% to 68-83%. We demonstrate that this behavioural shift is likely explained by developmental plasticity. Within first-year birds, 98% crossed the Strait of Gibraltar towards their African wintering grounds, in Morocco or Sub-Saharan Africa. However, the majority shifted towards a non-migratory strategy as they aged - the proportion of migrants decreased to 67% and 33%, on their second and third year of life, respectively - suggesting that migratory behaviour is determined during ontogeny. Supporting these findings, only 19% of GPS-tracked adults migrated. Moreover, we did not find evidence of phenotypic flexibility, as adults were highly consistent in migratory behaviour over multiple years (only 3 individuals changed strategy between years, out of 113 yearly transitions), nor of selection acting on genetic variation, since genomes of migrants and residents are essentially undifferentiated. Our results suggest that through developmental plasticity, traits that are plastic during specific windows of development, become fixed during adulthood. Thus, inter-generational shifts in the frequency of migratory and non-migratory young individuals could drive population changes in migratory behaviour. This can provide a fast mechanism for long-lived migratory birds to respond to rapid human-driven environmental changes.

Abstract:During spring, migratory birds are required to optimally balance energetic costs of migration across heterogeneous landscapes and weather conditions in order to survive and reproduce successfully. Therefore, an individual's migratory performance may influence reproductive outcomes. We used GPS tracking devices on Greater White‐fronted Geese during spring migration to examine whether migration characteristics influenced breeding propensity and breeding outcome. We found highly variable migration strategies led to successful reproductive outcomes, and a geographic gradient of migration characteristics influenced where individuals fell along the capital‐income breeding continuum, revealing geographic effects of life‐history strategy among conspecifics. Given large‐scale changes in land use, climate, and potential carry‐over effects, understanding how individuals migrate in relation to breeding outcomes is critical to predicting how future scenarios may affect populations. We used GPS tracking devices on 56 Greater White‐fronted Geese (Anser albifrons) during four spring migrations to examine whether migration characteristics influenced breeding propensity and breeding outcome. We found a strong longitudinal difference in arrival to the breeding areas (18 days earlier), pre‐nesting duration (90.9% longer), and incubation initiation dates (9 days earlier) between western‐ and eastern‐Arctic breeding regions, with contrasting effects on breeding outcomes, but no migration characteristic strongly influenced breeding outcome. We found that breeding region influenced whether an individual likely pursued a capital or income breeding strategy. Where individuals fell along the capital‐income breeding continuum was influenced by longitude, revealing geographic effects of life‐history strategy among conspecifics. Factors that govern breeding outcomes likely occur primarily upon arrival to breeding areas or are related to individual quality and previous breeding outcome, and may not be directly tied to migratory decision‐making across broad scales.

Abstract:In many gregarious species, sex-specific differences can lead to significant variation in movement patterns and, consequently, to social and spatial segregation by sex within the population. Specifically, in several long-distance migratory shorebird species, reverse sexual dimorphism has been proposed as a driver of spatial segregation during the non-breeding season. Thus, sex-specific costs associated with space use during these stationary periods could differentially condition subsequent movement patterns between females and males in these species. Using satellite tracking technology, we analyzed the space use and movement patterns of a population of Hudsonian godwits ( Limosa haemastica ), a gregarious long-distance migratory shorebird, during the non-breeding season in Chiloé, Chile. We predicted that larger females would show more restricted movements and higher local site fidelity, while smaller males would be less competitive and more exploratory. Most individuals exhibited restricted space use (i.e., a home range), while a smaller fraction showed exploratory movements leading to a nomadic movement pattern. Most of these nomadic individuals subsequently oversummered in Argentina rather than migrating back to breeding areas. Contrary to our main prediction, none of the observed movement patterns were sex-biased. Recent evidence suggests that female and male godwits access prey of different sizes within the same foraging sites on Chiloé. Thus, in accordance with our results, and supported by recent additional findings, resource-partitioning within the same foraging patches could reduce interference competition between the sexes by offsetting the competitive advantage associated with the reversed sexual dimorphism of females over males. Finally, we propose these sex differences in foraging strategies could be advantageous for gregarious migratory shorebird populations that show strong connectivity and high site fidelity during and between non-breeding seasons.

Abstract:The mortality rate of long-distance migrants is known to peak in the period between fledging and completing the first year of life. Our understanding of this sensitive life stage, however, lags behind our understanding of determinants of nestling success (at least for temperate breeding birds). Here we collect diverse data (morphometrics, phenology, nest videos, radio tracking detections) on two generations of a long-distance migrant (the Purple Martin, Progne subis ). We examine multiple life stages, to understand how in-nest conditions may carry over to the post-fledge period. Our data show that an earlier first-egg date is associated with higher parental quality as determined by their tracked movements and provisioning effort. Despite high variability in first-egg date, the duration of the nestling phase was approximately consistent between nests, with fledge-date and date of fledgling departure from the breeding grounds highly constrained by a relatively fixed duration of nestling development. Offspring of early-nesting parents fledged in better body condition, as evidenced by their larger wing chord measurements. Given the fixed nesting duration, this higher parental quality in early nesters led to early-season nestlings having the dual advantage of elevated body condition and early departure dates—two known predictors of first migration survival in this species and many others. Our work illustrates a potential carry-over effect from the nestling phase to fall-migration, and provides a useful example of linking diverse data sets across multiple life stages to extend our knowledge of breeding success to the less-understood post-breeding phase.

Abstract:Seasonal migration is a widespread phenomenon, which is found in many different lineages of animals. This spectacular behaviour allows animals to avoid seasonally adverse environmental conditions to exploit more favourable habitats. Migration has been intensively studied in birds, which display astonishing variation in migration strategies, thus providing a powerful system for studying the ecological and evolutionary processes that shape migratory behaviour. Despite intensive research, the genetic basis of migration remains largely unknown. Here, we used state-of-the-art radio-tracking technology to characterize the migratory behaviour of a partially migratory population of European blackbirds (Turdus merula) in southern Germany. We compared gene expression of resident and migrant individuals using high-throughput transcriptomics in blood samples. Analyses of sequence variation revealed a nonsignificant genetic structure between blackbirds differing by their migratory phenotype. We detected only four differentially expressed genes between migrants and residents, which might be associated with hyperphagia, moulting and enhanced DNA replication and transcription. The most pronounced changes in gene expression occurred between migratory birds depending on when, in relation to their date of departure, blood was collected. Overall, the differentially expressed genes detected in this analysis may play crucial roles in determining the decision to migrate, or in controlling the physiological processes required for the onset of migration. These results provide new insights into, and testable hypotheses for, the molecular mechanisms controlling the migratory phenotype and its underlying physiological mechanisms in blackbirds and other migratory bird species.
