Abstract:Background: The association between ambient temperature and mortality has been well documented worldwide. However, limited data are available on nonfatal health outcomes, such as emergency department visits (EDVs), particularly from China.Objectives: To examine the temperature-EDV association in 12 Chinese cities; and to assess the modification effects by region, gender and age.Methods: Daily meteorological data and non-accidental EDVs were collected during 2011-2014. Poisson regression with distributed lag non-linear model was applied to examine the temperature-lag-EDV association in each city. The effect estimates were pooled using multivariate meta-analysis at the national and regional level. Stratified analyses were performed by gender and age-groups. Sensitivity analyses adjusting for air pollution and relative humidity were conducted.Results: A total of 4,443,127 EDVs were collected from the 12 cities. Both cold and hot temperatures were associated with increased risk of EDVs, with minimum-mortality temperature located at 64th percentile of temperature. The effect of cold temperature appeared on day 2 and persisted until day 30, causing a cumulative relative risk (RR) of 1.80 (1.54, 2.11). The effect of hot temperature appeared immediately and lasted until day 3, with a cumulative RR of 1.15 (1.03,1.29). The effect of temperature on EDVs was similar in male and female but was attenuated with increasing age. The effect of cold temperature on EDVs was greater in southern areas of the country whereas the hot effect was greater in northern cities. The association was robust to a large range of sensitivity analyses.Conclusions: In China, there is a U-shaped association between temperature and risk of EDVs that is independent of air pollution and humidity. The temperature-EDV association varies with latitude and age-groups but is not affected by gender. Forecasting models for hospital emergency departments may be improved if temperature is included as an independent predictor. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Modifying Temperature-Related Cardiovascular Mortality Through Green-Blue Space Exposure

Abstract:Green-blue spaces (GBS) are pivotal in mitigating thermal discomfort. However, their management lacks guidelines rooted in epidemiological evidence for specific planning and design. Here we show how various GBS types modify the link between non-optimal temperatures and cardiovascular mortality across different thermal extremes. We merged fine-scale population density and GBS data to create novel GBS exposure index. A case time series approach was employed to analyse temperature-cardiovascular mortality association and the effect modifications of type-specific GBSs across 1085 subdistricts in south-eastern China. Our findings indicate that both green and blue spaces may significantly reduce high-temperature-related cardiovascular mortality risks (e.g., for low (5%) vs. high (95%) level of overall green spaces at 99th vs. minimum mortality temperature (MMT), Ratio of relative risk (RRR) = 1.14 (95% CI: 1.07, 1.21); for overall blue spaces, RRR = 1.20 (95% CI: 1.12, 1.29)), while specific blue space types offer protection against cold temperatures (e.g., for the rivers at 1st vs MMT, RRR = 1.17 (95% CI: 1.07, 1.28)). Notably, forests, parks, nature reserves, street greenery, and lakes are linked with lower heat-related cardiovascular mortality, whereas rivers and coasts mitigate cold-related cardiovascular mortality. Blue spaces provide greater benefits than green spaces. The severity of temperature extremes further amplifies GBS's protective effects. This study enhances our understanding of how type-specific GBS influences health risks associated with non-optimal temperatures, offering valuable insights for integrating GBS into climate adaptation strategies for maximal health benefits.
Effect Modifications of Green Space and Blue Space on Heat–mortality Association in Hong Kong, 2008–2017

Abstract:Background: Despite emerging recognition of the benefits of green and blue spaces on human health, evidence for their effect modifications on heat-mortality associations is limited. We aimed to investigate the effect modifications of green and blue spaces on heat-mortality associations among different age and sex groups and at different heat levels.Methods: Daily mortality and meteorological data from 2008 to 2017 in Hong Kong, China were collected. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and distance to coast were used as proxies for green and blue space exposure, respectively. Time-series analyses was performed using fitting generalized linear mixed models with an interaction term between heat and levels of exposure to either green or blue space. Age-, sex-, and heat level-stratified analyses were also conducted.Results: With a 1 degrees C increase in temperature above the 90th percentile (29.61 degrees C), mortality increased by 5.7% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.6, 10.1%), 5.4% (1.4, 9.5%), and 4.6% (0.8, 8.9%) for low, medium and high levels of green space exposure, respectively, and by 7.5% (3.9, 11.2%) and 3.5% (0.3, 6.8%) for low and high levels of blue space exposure, respectively. Significant effect modifications of green and blue spaces were not observed for the whole population or any specific age and sex group, either at a moderate heat level or a heat level (Ps > 0.05). Conclusions: No significant effect modifications of green and blue spaces on heat-related mortality risk were observed in Hong Kong. These findings challenge the existing evidence on the prominent protective role of green and blue spaces in mitigating heat-related mortality risks.
Effect Modification of Greenness on Temperature-Mortality Relationship among Older Adults: A Case-Crossover Study in China.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Climate change exacerbates temperature-related mortality, but effects may vary by geographic characteristics. We hypothesize that higher greenness may mitigate temperature-related mortality, and that the effect may vary in different areas.OBJECTIVE:We examined how mortality among older adults in China was associated with temperature for 2000-2014, and how geolocation and residential greenness may modulate this association.METHODS:We used health data from the China Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), and meteorological data from the Global Surface Summary of Day (GSOD) product by National Climate Data Center. We used a case-crossover study design with distributed nonlinear modeling to estimate mortality risks in relation to temperature, and stratified analysis by quartile of greenness. Greenness was estimated by Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from remote-sensed imagery. In addition to the national analysis, we also assessed three provinces (Jiangsu, Guangdong, and Liaoning) to examine differences by climatic regions.RESULTS:Extreme temperatures had a significant association with higher mortality, with regional differences. Findings from the national analysis suggest that individuals in the lowest quartile of greenness exposure had a ratio of relative risks (RRR) of 1.38 (0.79, 2.42) for mortality risk on extreme hot days at the 95th percentile compared to those at the 50th percentile, compared to those in the highest quartile, which means those residing in the lowest quartile of greenness had a 38% higher RR than those residing in the highest quartile of greenness, where RR refers to the risk of mortality on days at the 95th percentile of temperature compared to days at the 50th percentile. The RRR for the highest to lowest quartiles of greenness for mortality risk on extreme cold days at the 5th percentile compared to the 50th percentile was 2.08 (0.12, 36.2). In Jiangsu and Guangdong provinces, both the heat effects and cold effects were the lowest in the highest greenness quartile, and the results in Liaoning province were not statistically significant, indicating different regional effects of greenness on modulating the temperature-mortality relationship.DISCUSSION:We elucidated one pathway through which greenness benefits health by decreasing impact from extreme high temperatures. The effects of greenness differed by climatic regions. Policymakers should consider vegetation in the context of climate change and health.

Abstract:A severely cold climate has a significant impact on cardiovascular health, involving temperature, air environment, exercise and diet. Existing studies have revealed that green space, as an important health resource, may play a positive role in promoting cardiovascular health through the air environment and exercise. Studies focusing on the correlation between green space and cardiovascular health are rarely carried out in winter cities. The purpose of this paper is to take a winter city in China as an empirical case to explore the correlation between green space in a neighbourhood and cardiovascular health in a representative sample at the neighbourhood level, combining the results with Urban Residential Area Planning and Design Standards (GB50180-2018) in China and the existing research. The results showed that green space characteristics of a neighbourhood were related to cardiovascular disease and some of its risk factors. In neighbourhoods with a Green Space Ratio lower than 28%, residents had a higher risk of physical inactivity, overweight or obesity, hypertension and stroke. In neighbourhoods with a Green View Index lower than 15%, residents had a higher risk of physical inactivity, overweight/obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia and stroke. A correlation was found between evergreen tree configuration type and the prevalence of overweight/obesity and hypertension. No correlation was found between the type of sports field and cardiovascular disease and its risk factors, except for hypertension. Residents’ cardiovascular health scores also showed significant differences among neighbourhoods with different green space characteristics. Intervention efforts may benefit from emphasising the importance of improving the Green Space Ratio and Green View Index effectively in a neighbourhood to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Association between exposure to greenspace and ECG abnormalities in China: a nationwide longitudinal study

Abstract:Background: Greenspace is an important modifiable environmental factor that is associated with health and well-being. Although previous research has shown that exposure to greenspace is beneficial for cardiovascular diseases, studies have rarely focused on early subclinical health outcomes such as electrocardiogram (ECG) abnormality. Methods: We developed a longitudinal study using data from the China National Stroke Screening Survey (2013-2019). Monthly exposure to greenspace was assessed by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values. ECG abnormality was diagnosed by physicians based on the results of the 12-lead electrocardiogram. We used fixed-effects logistic regression with participant-specific intercepts to estimate the association between exposure to greenspace and ECG abnormalities. Results: A total of 132,108 visits from 61,029 participants with ≥ 2 ECG measurements were included. At baseline, the lag-1 month average NDVI value was 0.29 (SD = 0.15). In the fully adjusted model, per 0.1-unit increment in lag-1 month average NDVI value was associated with a 3.0% (95% CI -1.6 ∼ 7.4%) decreased risk of ECG abnormality. In urban areas, the decreased risk associated with per 0.1-unit increment in NDVI was 14.81% (95% CI 9.38 ∼ 19.92%). Conclusion: Our study found that higher exposure to greenspace was associated with a decreased risk of ECG abnormality, especially in urban areas. Our findings suggested that monthly exposure to greenspace might be beneficial to cardiovascular health, and greenspace provision and maintenance could be considered an important public health intervention in urban planning.

Abstract:This study assessed the impact of various temperature indices, including mean temperature (MT), diurnal temperature range (DTR), and temperature changes between neighboring days (TCN) on hospitalization rates for cardiovascular system diseases among residents of Zhangye City, a typical western city in China. The Quasi-Poisson generalized additive regression model (GAM) in conjunction with a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was applied to estimate the association of temperature indices with CVD hospitalization rates in Zhangye City during the periods of 2015–2021. The exposure–response relationship and relative risk were discussed and stratified analyses by age and gender were conducted. We found that the hospitalization rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) patients in Zhangye City was significantly related to different temperature indicators (MT, DTR, TCN). Both low and high MT, DTR, and TCN increased the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among residents. Besides, different demographic populations exhibited distinct sensitivities to temperature conditions. Relevant authorities should devise corresponding preventive and control measures to protect vulnerable populations.

Effect of Ambient Temperature on Emergency Department Visits in Shanghai, China: a Time Series Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Many studies have examined the association between ambient temperature and mortality. However, less evidence is available on the temperature effects on gender- and age-specific emergency department visits, especially in developing countries. In this study, we examined the short-term effects of daily ambient temperature on emergency department visits (ED visits) in Shanghai.METHODS:Daily ED visits and daily ambient temperatures between January 2006 and December 2011 were analyzed. After controlling for secular and seasonal trends, weather, air pollution and other confounding factors, a Poisson generalized additive model (GAM) was used to examine the associations between ambient temperature and gender- and age-specific ED visits. A moving average lag model was used to evaluate the lag effects of temperature on ED visits.RESULTS:Low temperature was associated with an overall 2.76% (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.73 to 3.80) increase in ED visits per 1°C decrease in temperature at Lag1 day, 2.03% (95% CI: 1.04 to 3.03) and 2.45% (95% CI: 1.40 to 3.52) for males and females. High temperature resulted in an overall 1.78% (95% CI: 1.05 to 2.51) increase in ED visits per 1°C increase in temperature on the same day, 1.81% (95% CI: 1.08 to 2.54) among males and 1.75% (95% CI: 1.03 to 2.49) among females. The cold effect appeared to be more acute among younger people aged <45 years, whereas the effects were consistent on individuals aged ≥65 years. In contrast, the effects of high temperature were relatively consistent over all age groups.CONCLUSIONS:These findings suggest a significant association between ambient temperature and ED visits in Shanghai. Both cold and hot temperatures increased the relative risk of ED visits. This knowledge has the potential to advance prevention efforts targeting weather-sensitive conditions.

Abstract:Background: The potential for residential greenness to improve cardiovascular health through both physical and psychological mechanisms is well recognized. However, evidence from rapidly urbanizing developing countries and cohort-based causal inference approaches, remains limited. We aim to examine the effect of residential greenness and time to cardiovascular mortality in South China. Methods: We utilized data from a community-based population survey involving 748,209 participants at baseline from 2009 to 2015, followed up until 2020. Residential greenness exposure was assessed by the annual Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in the 500 m radius of each participant's residence. We used time-varying proportional hazard Cox models coupled with inverse probability weighting to fit marginal structural models and obtain hazard ratios (HRs) for cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality after adjusting for confounders. Multiple effect modifiers on both additive and multiplicative scales were further explored. Results: A total of 15,139 CVD-related deaths were identified during a median of 7.9 years of follow-up. A protective effect was found between higher greenness exposure and reduced CVD mortality, with a 9.3 % lower rate of total CVD mortality (HR 0.907, 95 % CI 0.859-0.957) based on a 0.1 increase in annual average NDVI. Demographic (age, marital status) and lifestyle factors (smoking, drinking status) were found to modify the association between residential greenness and CVD mortality (all P interaction values < 0.05 or 95 %CI for RERI excluded the value 0). Notably, this effect was more pronounced among older adults, married, and individuals having healthier lifestyles, indicating a greater benefit from greenness for these subgroups. Conclusions: Our findings support a causal link between increased residential greenness exposure and a reduced risk of CVD mortality in South China with marked heterogenous effects, which has public health implications for cultivating greener urban environments to mitigate the impact of CVD within the context of rapid urbanization.
[Association between ambient temperature and hospital emergency room visits for cardiovascular diseases: a case-crossover study].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To explore the association between ambient average temperature and hospital emergency room visits for cardiovascular diseases (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Vision ICD-10: I00 - I99) in Beijing, China. METHODS:Data was collected on daily hospital emergency room visits for cardiovascular diseases from Peking University Third Hospital, including meteorological data (daily average temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and atmospheric pressure) from the China Meteorological Data Sharing Service System, and on air pollution from the Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center. Time-stratified case-crossover design was used to analyze data on 4 seasons. RESULTS:After adjusting data on air pollution, 1 degree ( degrees C) increase of ambient average temperature would associate with the emergency room visits of odds ratio (ORs) as 1.282 (95%CI: 1.250 - 1.315), 1.027 (95%CI: 1.001 - 1.055), 0.661 (95%CI: 0.637 - 0.687), and 0.960 (95%CI: 0.937 - 0.984) in spring, summer, autumn, and winter respectively. After controlling the influence of relative humidity, wind speed, and atmospheric pressure, 1 degrees C increase in the ambient average temperature would be associated with the emergency room visits on ORs value as 1.423 (95%CI: 1.377 - 1.471), 1.082 (95%CI: 1.041 - 1.124), 0.633 (95%CI: 0.607 - 0.660) and 0.971 (95%CI: 0.944 - 1.000) in spring, summer, autumn, and winter respectively. CONCLUSION:These data on outcomes suggested that the elevated level of ambient temperature would increase the hospital emergency room visits for cardiovascular diseases in spring and summer while the elevated level of ambient temperature would decrease the hospital emergency room visits for the cardiovascular diseases in autumn and winter, suggesting that patients with cardiovascular diseases should pay attention to the climate change.
Do greenspaces really reduce heat health impacts? Evidence for different vegetation types and distance-based greenspace exposure

Abstract:Background: While vegetation type, population density and proximity to greenspaces have been linked to human health, what type and location of greenspace matter most have remained unclear. In this context, there are question marks over investment-style metrics. Objectives: This paper aims at establishing what vegetation type may matter most in modifying heat-mortality associations, and what the optimal buffer distances of total and specific types of greenspace exposure associated with reduced heat-related mortality risks are. Methods: We conducted small-area analyses using daily mortality data for 286 Territory Planning Units (TPUs) across Hong Kong and 1 × 1 km gridded air temperature data for the summer months (2005-2018). Using a case time series design, we examined effect modifications of total and specific types of greenspaces, as well as population-weighted exposure at varying buffer distances (200-4000 m). We tested the significance of effect modifications by comparing relative risks (RRs) between the lowest and highest quartiles of each greenspace exposure metric; and explored the strength of effect modifications by calculating the ratio of RRs. Results: Forests, unlike grasslands, showed significant effect modifications on heat-mortality associations, with RRs rising from 0.98 (95 %CI: 0.92,1.05) to 1.06 (1.03, 1.10) for the highest to lowest quartiles (p-value = 0.037) The optimal distances associated with the most apparent effects were around 1 km for population-weighted exposure, with the ratio of RRs being 1.424 (1.038,1.954) for NDVI, 1.191 (1.004,1.413) for total greenspace, and 1.227 (1.024,1.470) for forests. A marked difference was observed in terms of the paired area-level and optimal distance-based exposure to total greenspace and forests under extreme heat (p-values < 0.05). Discussion: Our findings suggest that greenspace, particularly nearby forests, may significantly mitigate heat-related mortality risks.
Weekly green space visit duration is positively associated with favorable health outcomes in people with hypertension: Evidence from Shenzhen, China

Abstract:Background: Studies from high income 'western' countries indicate that green space visit duration is associated with better health. However, scant comparable research has been done in developing countries with rapid urbanization and on the potential health impacts of specific green infrastructure. Objective: Associations between green space visit duration, green infrastructure and various health outcomes were assessed in hypertensive patients. Methods: A stratified multi-stage cluster random sampling method was applied to select 1116 patients with hypertension aged 35 years or older in Shenzhen, China. Face-to-face survey, physical examination and laboratory biochemical tests were applied to obtain information. Binary logistic regressions with restricted cubic splines were used to explore the degree of linearity in associations between green space visit duration and the following health outcomes: central obesity; diabetes; blood pressure; dyslipidemia; poor physical health; poor mental health. Models were adjusted for age, sex, education, marital status, occupation, and socioeconomic status. Further analysis was made for presence of the following health promoting green infrastructure: health knowledge promotion areas; walking trails; fitness areas; group exercise venues. Results: Each additional 30 min green space visitation was linearly associated with lower odds of self-reported poor mental health [OR (95%CI): 0.937 (0.891-0.985)], self-reported poor physical health [OR (95%CI): 0.918 (0.872-0.966)], and central obesity [OR (95%CI): 0.951 (0.907-0.997)]. Odds of poor mental health [OR (95%CI): 0.886 (0.788-0.997)], poor physical health [OR (95%CI): 0.882 (0.782-0.996)] and central obesity [OR (95%CI): 0.855 (0.765-0.955)] were founded to decrease with a greater number of health promoting green infrastructure. Conclusion: More time spent in green space and with more types of green infrastructure were favourably associated with central obesity, and physical and mental health in people with hypertension.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the effects of temperature on CVD hospitalizations in suburban farmers of Zhangye, Wuwei, and Longnan with different climatic zones in Gansu Province, China. We obtained daily CVD hospitalization data for the three cities from the medical records of inpatients with the New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme from the period January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019. Generalized additive model based on Quasi-Poisson distribution and distributed lag nonlinear model were used to evaluate the effects of temperature on CVD hospitalizations, with analyses stratified by gender and age (adults: <65 years; the elderly:≥65 years). The effect of minimum-morbidity temperature was used as the reference value to calculate estimates. M-shaped exposure-response curves were observed between temperature and CVD hospitalizations in the three cities. There are some differences in the susceptible populations of temperature in different regions, gender and age. This study showed that both low and high temperatures could increase the relative risks for CVD hospitalizations in the three cities. Abstract:CONTEXT Orthopaedic assessment skills are critical to the success of athletic therapists and trainers. The Standardized Orthopedic Assessment Tool (SOAT) has been content validated. OBJECTIVE To establish interrater reliability of the SOAT. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS Thirty-two college students, 10 raters, and 2 standardized patients (SPs) from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. DESIGN Randomized observational study. INTERVENTION(S) Students were allowed 30 minutes to complete a mock orthopaedic assessment of an SP with an injury specific to a region of the body (shoulder, knee, or ankle). Using the region-specific SOAT, raters and SPs evaluated students' orthopaedic assessment skills. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) The sum totals of the SOAT for 2 raters and 1 SP were used to calculate each student's performance scores for respective scenarios. Scale reliability analysis (Cronbach alpha) was completed on the SOAT for each of the 3 body-region examinations. RESULTS The mean overall reliability of 3 SOATs (ie, ankle, knee, and shoulder) was positive: alpha = .85 with the SP scores factored into the equation and alpha = .86 without the SP scores factored into the equation. Reliability for the ankle region was highest (alpha = .91), followed by the knee (alpha = .83) and the shoulder (alpha = .82). CONCLUSIONS The study sample size was small, but the results will enable further study with generalization to a broader audience of athletic therapists and athletic trainers. Because a baseline measure of reliability was established using a robust statistical analysis, future researchers can employ more stringent statistical analysis and focus on the effects of various pedagogical techniques to teach and learn the underlying construct of clinical competence in orthopaedic assessment.

Associations of ambient temperature with mortality for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and the modification effects of greenness in Shandong Province, China

Abstract:BackgroundEvidence is scant on the relative and attributable contributions of ambient temperature on stroke subtypes mortality. Few studies have examined modification effects of multiple greenness indicators on such contributions, especially in China. We quantified the associations between ambient temperature and overall, ischemic, and hemorrhagic stroke mortality; further examined whether the associations were modified by greenness.MethodsWe conducted a multicenter time-series analysis from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2019. we adopted a distributed lag non-linear model to evaluate county-specific temperature-stroke mortality associations. We then applied a random-effects meta-analysis to pool county-specific effects. Attributable mortality was calculated for cold and heat, defined as temperatures below and above the minimum mortality temperature (MMT). Finally, We conducted a multivariate meta-regression to determine associations between greenness and stroke mortality risks for cold and heat, using normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) as quantitative indicators of greenness exposure.ResultsIn the study period, 138,749 deaths from total stroke were reported: 86,873 ischemic and 51,876 hemorrhagic stroke. We observed significant W-shaped relationships between temperature and stroke mortality, with substantial differences among counties and regions. With MMT as the temperature threshold, 17.16 % (95 % empirical CI, 13.38 %–19.75 %) of overall, 20.05 % (95 % eCI, 16.46 %–22.70 %) of ischemic, and 12.55 % (95 % eCI, 5.59 %–16.24 %) of hemorrhagic stroke mortality were attributable to non-optimum temperature (combining cold and heat), more mortality was caused by cold (14.94 %; 95 % eCI, 11.57 %–17.34 %) than by heat (2.22 %; 95 % eCI, 1.54 %–2.72 %). Higher levels of NDVI, SAVI and EVI were related to mitigated effects of non-optimum temperatures—especially heat.ConclusionsExposure to non-optimum temperatures aggravated stroke mortality risks; increasing greenness could alleviate that risks. This evidence has important implications for local communities in developing adaptive strategies to minimize the health consequences of adverse temperatures.

Abstract:Background No studies focused on impact of temperature changes between neighboring days (TCN) on cardiovascular disease (CVD) hospital admissions among suburban farmers although CVD has been the main cause to global mortality and disability especially in undeveloped and developing countries/areas. Method Daily data of CVD hospital admissions on suburban farmers and daily data of meteorology in Qingyang (China) were collected during 2011–2015. A distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was applied to explore the exposure–response relations and lagged effects between TCN and CVD hospital admissions with stratified analyses by age and gender. Extreme low TCN effects and burden analysis were conducted. Results Based on 25,984 cases in Qingyang (China) during 2011–2015 among suburban farmers, we found that, first, nonlinear relationship was observed between TCN and CVD hospital admissions and adverse impact in negative TCN (temperature dropping between neighboring days) while protective effect in positive TCN (temperature rising between neighboring days) were discovered; third, during lag0–27, the cumulative relative risk (RR) for extreme low TCN (5th percentile, − 3.5 °C) and extreme high TCN (95th percentile, 3 °C) was 29.55 (95% CI 4.709–185.436) and 0.040 (95% CI 0.009–0.169), respectively; fourth, the age < 65 and females were more vulnerable to negative TCN than the age ≥ 65 and males among suburban farmers, respectively; last, moderate low TCN contributed the most fractions and numbers on CVD hospital admissions. Conclusions Among Qingyang suburban farmers in Northwest China, negative TCN should be paid more attention.

Abstract:Aims: The objective of this study was to analyze hospitalization rates for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province of China from 2015 to 2020 and to uncover the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics and influencing factors, and thus to provide reference for the prevention and control of CVD and public health resources planning. Methods: The hospitalization data for CVDs from 2016 to 2020 was obtained from the First Affiliated Hospital of Gannan Medical University, and ArcGIS 10.8, SaTScan 9.5, and Matlab 20.0 were used to analyze the spatial autocorrelation, spatiotemporal scan statistics, and potential affecting factors of the hospitalization rates. Results: The hospitalization rate for CVDs in Ganzhou City showed a slightly increasing trend from 2016 to 2020, with higher rates in winter and summer than that in spring and autumn, and the individuals aged 61 and above constitute a higher proportion compared to other age groups. Additionally, there was a positive correlation between hospitalization rates for CVDs and the counties and districts in Ganzhou City, with high-high aggregation areas mainly distributed in Nankang District, the western urban area of Ganzhou City. The spatial scan analysis identified three different types of significant aggregation areas: high-risk, low-risk, and middle-risk areas. The high-risk area was mainly centered around Zhanggong District or Shangyu County in the central and western regions, with a disease hospitalization rate 2–3 times higher than the rest areas. The study also found that environmental meteorological factors such as the annual average concentration of NO 2 , O 3 , average annual temperature, and annual maximum temperature diurnal range had a significant positive effect on hospitalization rates for CVDs in Ganzhou City, with O 3 concentration and average annual temperature having significant positive indirect spatial spillover effects. Conclusion: Winter and summer are the seasons with high hospitalization rate of cardiovascular diseases. County residents aged 61 and above are the higher-risk population that needs to pay more attention on for prevention and control of CVD in Ganzhou City, which exhibits significant spatiotemporal clustering. The urban areas of Zhanggong and Nankang in Ganzhou City are the key areas for prevention and control of CVD. The hospitalization rate of CVD in Ganzhou City is influenced by the aforementioned four environmental meteorological factors, with the annual maximum temperature diurnal range showing the most significant positive direct effect.

Abstract:In recent years, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have become the primary cause of death in the world. Existing studies have found that greenspace is important for the prevention of CVDs and stroke. However, since they only focus on large green infrastructure (e.g., urban parks) or the general greenspace (usually being evaluated through normalized difference vegetation index), little information exists regarding the association between street-level greenspace and CVDs (stroke). In this study, the CVDs and stroke data of participants were retrieved from the 33 Chinese Community Health Study. We measured participants’ exposure to street-level greenspace exposure using street view images and machine learning technique. Multilevel logistic regressions were applied. While controlling for confounders, we found that higher level of street-level greenspace exposure was associated with lower CVDs prevalence. However, street-level greenspace exposure was associated with stroke prevalence only for females. The associations were stronger among females, younger adults, participants with educational attainment above high school, physically active participants and participants who were not overweight. None of the mediators (air pollution, physical exercise, and BMI) can explain the associations between street-level greenspace exposure and CVDs (stroke) prevalence. Our findings suggest that street-level vegetation should be increased to cope with the rapid growth of the CVDs burdens. Also, the differences between the effect of street-level trees and grasses should be noted before formulating specific urban planning policies.

Abstract:Exposure to green space has been proposed to be beneficially associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Many studies have explored this topic, but the results remain conflicting. We aimed to evaluate the epidemiological evidence on this topic by performing a systematic review with meta-analysis. We searched PubMed, Web of Science and Embase for studies on the association between green space and cardiovascular disease (CVD) that were published till January 2022. Two authors independently performed study selection, data extraction, quality assessment, and risk of bias assessment. For studies providing detailed numeric data, we also conducted quantitative meta-analyses and calculated the pooled odd ratios (ORs) for associations between the most commonly used exposure estimate (normalized difference vegetative index [NDVI]) and five CVD events: CVD mortality, ischemic heart disease (IHD) mortality, cerebrovascular disease (CBVD) mortality, and stroke incidence/prevalence. Additional analyses were conducted to explore the geographical scale effects of NDVI. Publication bias tests were also conducted. Of the 6787 records identified, 53 studies were eligible for inclusion. These studies covered 18 countries and included data from more than 100 million persons. Meta-analyses showed that a 0.1 increase in NDVI was significantly associated with 2-3% lower odds of CVD mortality (OR: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.96-0.99), IHD mortality (OR: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.96-1.00), CBVD mortality (OR: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.97-1.00), and stroke incidence/prevalence (OR: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.96-0.99). There was no significant difference between the pooled estimates for different buffer sizes. No evidence of publication bias was detected. We provide strong and robust evidence for the beneficial effects of green space exposure on cardiovascular health. More prospective studies and mechanistic studies, especially that conducted in low- and middle-income countries, are merited to strengthen our conclusions.
