Abstract:Thermochemical remediation of petroleum-contaminated soil (PCS) has attracted increased attention. Pyrolysis is one of an important thermochemical treatment technology. The pyrolysis behavior of PCS and the main gaseous products evolved were investigated by means of a simultaneous thermogravimetric analyzer (TG) coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and mass spectrometry (MS). Pyrolysis residue characteristics were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), FTIR, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results revealed that the pyrolysis process of PCS was divided into water evaporation, volatilization of light volatile, degradation of low/high boiling point organic matters, and decomposition of inorganic mineral. The increase of heating rate would lead to the shift of thermal profiles to a higher temperature region and the increase of mass loss rate, without changing the patterns of thermal degradation of PCS. In addition, CO2, the most important gaseous product, was released in two temperature regions of 700–1090 K and 1090–1220 K. The trace pollution gaseous product SO2 was discharged above 1100 K. After pyrolysis, the organic matters were significantly reduced, and the inorganic minerals such as CaCO3 and BaSO4 were decomposed. The sulfur in PCS mainly existed in the form of sulfate-S, sulfonic acid-S or sulfone-S, sulfoxide-S, aromatic-S, and aliphatic-S. During pyrolysis, sulfate-S was continuously decreased, while the other four forms of organic-S may be transformed into each other and finally partially stabilized in the pyrolysis residue.

Abstract:Thermal desorption technology has been widely used for the remediation of organic contaminated soil, but the heating process may alter the soil properties and its safety reutilization. After thermal remediation, the target pollutants including chloroform, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, 1,2,3-trichloropropane and vinyl chloride in the chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminated site were reduced significantly. The soil microbial α-diversity was also reduced by more than half. Notably, the relative abundance of Chloroflexi decreased by 9.0%, while Firmicutes had a 9.0% increase after thermal remediation. By water regulation and exogenous microorganism addition, the soil microbial community could not be restored to its initial state before thermal remediation in a relatively short time (30 days). The relative abundance of Proteobacteria increased from 25.4% to 41.7% and 51.0% by water regulation and exogenous microorganism addition, respectively. The modularity of the microbial co-occurrence network was strengthened after microbial restoration, but the interaction among microorganisms was weakened. Thermal remediation might be conducive to the C- and N-cycle related processes, but severely weakened the sulfide oxidation processes. Notably, microbial restoration would benefit the recovery of the S-cycle functional groups. These results provided a new perspective for the safety reutilization of soil after thermal remediation.
Thermal Kinetics of PFAS and Precursors in Soil: Experiment and Surface Simulation in Temperature-Time Plane

Abstract:Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are chemically and thermally stable due to the presence of carbon-fluorine (C-F) bond in their molecular structures, hence have been previously formulated as firefighting in-gredients. During the firefighting process, however, owing to the high temperature, PFAS can be potentially degraded, particularly for PFAS precursors that contain non-C-F bonds, which is studied herein by exposing PFAS-contaminated soil in a muffle furnace oven. Different temperatures and time intervals are applied to the real soil sample to mimic the firing process and to evaluate the degradation and conversion of PFAS. This thermal treatment can not only degrade precursors (e.g. 6:2 fluorotelomer sulphonate), but also degrade perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCA, e.g. perfluorooctanoic acid PFOA) and perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSA, e.g. perfluorooctane sulfonate PFOS). The concentration dependence of the PFAS on temperature and time is fitted using a 2D Gaussian surface to simulate the complex thermal kinetic, and to compare with the traditional approach such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) (1D dependence on temperature only). The 2D simulation can directly visu-alise the thermal kinetic of individual or sum PFAS in the complex temperature-time plane, which depends on the sample background and particularly on the coexist PFAS precursors. Overall, this study provides a simple approach to monitor and optimise the thermal treatment of the PFAS-contaminated soil.

Abstract:The paper presents the results of an experimental study conducted to investigate PAHs behavior during non-oxidant thermal decontamination of soil samples contaminated with petroleum products. The study focused on the assessment of the concentration levels for different PAHs species present in pyrolysis products after the treatment of contaminated soil samples. Pyrolysis experiments were performed using a horizontal tubular reactor. The contaminated soil samples were treated in inert controlled atmosphere (nitrogen). The treatment period varied between 30 and 60min at a temperature range of 350°C–650°C. Chemical analyses were performed to compare the thermal degradation mechanism and the pollutants generation in the flue gases of the pyrolysis process. The present research study identifies and quantifies the concentration level of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the solid and gaseous phases of the pyrolysis products, as well as from the condensates produced during the process. The amount of the organic contaminants was determined using a GC/MS analyzer and Soxhlet extraction method. The results of the experiments revealed that pyrolysis is an efficient process that could be used to remove the PAHs from contaminated soil. For 650°C treatment temperature performed for 30min the thermal process registered a decontamination efficiency superior to 80%. The extension of the treatment period to 60min increased the decontamination efficiency to more than 90%.

Abstract:Thermal desorption techniques, destined for removing organic pollutants from contaminated soil, are reviewed with some emphasis on the removal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and other semi-volatiles. Treatment temperature and time are the two key factors determining removal efficiency (RE), which is also influenced by soil texture, total pressure, carrier gas composition and heating rate. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) are selected as the most typical as well as widespread representative of semi-volatile POPs. In the presence of oxygen, PCB is converted into PCDF, leading to a rise in total TEQ (toxic equivalency quantity) even in case total PCB is diminishing. Thermal desorption and contaminant destruction and removal efficiency can be promoted by adding additives. The main mechanism of contaminants removal is desorption/evaporation, presumably accompanied by soil-catalysed dechlorination and decomposition. Thus, the soil treated is purified, yet the remaining contaminants are partly transferred to the gas phase. Dust extraction, condensation, and adsorption are frequently used to decrease the contaminant concentration in off-gas.

Abstract:A full-field investigation was conducted of vacuum-enhanced far-infrared thermal desorption of clay soil polluted by r-Hexachlorocyclohexane (RH). It demonstrated that vacuum-enhanced far-infrared thermal desorption process is effective for remediating RH contaminated clay soil. The thermal desorption rate (CE) were improved under such conditions: thermal desorption time 20 minutes, thermal desorption temperature 200 °C, vacuum 0.05MPa and water content 15%. The mass balance of RH was verified after 20min of reaction. The residue RH was distributed in the condensate, whereas the soil and active carbon contained lower amounts of RH.

Abstract:Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) contamination of soils remains a significant environmental challenge all over the world. Reductive stabilization is a developing technology that can decompose the HCB with a dechlorination process. A nanometallic Al/CaO (n-Al/CaO) dispersion mixture was developed utilizing ball-milling technology in this study. The dechlorination efficiency of HCB in contaminated soils by the n-Al/CaO grinding treatment was evaluated. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to investigate the effects of three variables (soil moisture content, n-Al/CaO dosage and grinding time) and the interactions between these variables under the Box-Behnken Design (BBD). A high regression coefficient value (R2 = 0.9807) and low p value (<0.0001) of the quadratic model indicated that the model was accurate in predicting the experimental results. The optimal soil moisture content, n-Al/CaO dosage, and grinding time were found to be 7% (m/m), 17.7% (m/m), and 24 h, respectively, in the experimental ranges and levels. Under optimal conditions, the dechlorination efficiency was 80%. The intermediate product analysis indicated that dechlorination was the process by stepwise loss of chloride atoms. The main pathway observed within 24 h was HCB → pentachlorobenzene (PeCB) → 1,2,3,4-tetrachlorobenzene (TeCB) and 1,2,4,5-TeCB. The results indicated that the moderate soil moisture content was crucial for the hydrodechlorination of HCB. A probable mechanism was proposed wherein water acted like a hydrogen donor and promoted the hydrodechlorination process. The potential application of n-Al/CaO is an environmentally-friendly and cost-effective option for decontamination of HCB-contaminated soils.
Microwave-enhanced thermal removal of organochlorine pesticide (chlordecone) from contaminated soils

Abstract:Soil contamination with chlordecone, an organochlorine pesticide, is causing serious health problems, affecting crop production and local livestock valorization in the French West Indies. In-situ chemical reduction (ISCR) processes for soil remediation have shown promise but need improvement in terms of time, cost and effective treatment, particularly for andosol soil types. Our study shows that a 10-min microwave treatment significantly reduces chlordecone concentrations (50-90%) in contaminated andosol and nitisol soils. Dry andosol soils show the highest removal yields and reach a higher final temperature (350 °C). Microwave treatment is in all cases more effective or at least as effective as 60 min of conventional heating at a target temperature of 200 °C. The thermal response of andosol and nitisol to microwave exposure is different, as the former is likely to undergo thermal runaway, reaching high temperatures in a short time, resulting in highly efficient thermal removal of chlordecone. These results encourage further scale-up, particularly for the treatment of andosol soils due to their strong microwave response.

Abstract:Thermal desorption is widely used for remediation of soil contaminated with volatiles, such as solvents and distillates. In this study, a soil contaminated with semivolatile polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was sampled at an interim storage point for waste PCB transformers and heated to temperatures from 300 to 600 °C in a flow of nitrogen to investigate the effect of temperature and particle size on thermal desorption. Two size fractions were tested: coarse soil of 420–841 μm and fine soil with particles <250 μm. A PCB removal efficiency of 98.0 % was attained after 1 h of thermal treatment at 600 °C. The residual amount of PCBs in this soil decreased with rising thermal treatment temperature while the amount transferred to the gas phase increased up to 550 °C; at 600 °C, destruction of PCBs became more obvious. At low temperature, the thermally treated soil still had a similar PCB homologue distribution as raw soil, indicating thermal desorption as a main mechanism in removal. Dechlorination and decomposition increasingly occurred at high temperature, since shifts in average chlorination level were observed, from 3.34 in the raw soil to 2.75 in soil treated at 600 °C. Fine soil particles showed higher removal efficiency and destruction efficiency than coarse particles, suggesting that desorption from coarse particles is influenced by mass transfer.

Effect of freeze-thawing cycles on aging behavior of phenanthrene, pyrene and their mixture in soil.

Abstract:This work was initiated to study the competitive sorption effect on phenanthrene and pyrene extraction during the aging process in phaeozem, burozem, aquorizem and krasnozem with or without freeze–thawing cycles. Soils contaminated with 100μgg−1 phenanthrene and 100μgg−1 pyrene separately and combined were extracted by 10gL−1 surfactant SDBS solution at various times over 120days. The competitive effect on extraction efficiency may either increase or decrease with increasing soil contact time, depending on the properties of the accessible adsorption sites. The increased difference in extraction efficiency change has a positive correlation with soil organic carbon content. The change in extraction efficiency between no freeze–thawing and freeze–thawing in soils contaminated with both hydrocarbons was smaller compared to it with phenanthrene or pyrene alone due to the similar roles freeze–thawing and competitive effect plays, causing contaminant molecules to occupy the high-energy adsorption sites and expanding the glassy domain of soil organic matter. No general conclusions were obtained among the frequency of freeze–thawing cycles, soil moisture and extraction efficiency. This study validates our previous conceptual freeze–thawing model and is expected to help the development of the environmental fate and risk assessment.

Abstract:The exposure of terrestrial organisms to soils freshly contaminated by polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs, including PAHs and polar-PACs) is known to cause significant toxicity effects. However, historically contaminated soils, such as former coking plant soils, usually induce a limited toxic impact, due to the "aging" phenomenon which is the result of several processes causing a reduction of PAC availability over time. For a better understanding of these behaviors, this study aimed to compare the toxic responses of terrestrial organisms exposed to aged contaminated soils and their counterparts submitted to a moderate heating process applied to increase PAC availability. Two aged "raw" soils (limited PAC availability) were selected for their representativeness of former industrial soils in terms of PAC contamination. These soils were submitted either to moderate heating (expected PAC availability increase) or solvent-extraction (expected PAC removal). Physico-chemical parameters, contamination levels and availability were determined for these three soil modalities. Additionally, standardized limit bioassays on plants and earthworms were performed to assess soil ecotoxicity. The findings demonstrated that historically contaminated soils exposed to moderate heating induced the highest ecotoxic responses from terrestrial organisms. Heating increased PAC (bio)availability, without modifying any other soil physico-chemical properties. These results pointed out the importance of considering the contamination availability parameter in risk evaluation and also provide a possible tool for protective long-term risk assessment.

Abstract:This study combines a preliminary mechanochemical treatment and a subsequent thermal desorption for remediating soil, contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). After 2 hours of grinding, assisted by addition of SiO2, the total concentration of PCBs and their TEQ-value decreased by 81.9% and 85.4%, respectively. The effect of thermal treatment at 400, 500 and 600 degrees C on the removal efficiency of PCBs from ground soil was then investigated. The residual amount of PCBs reduced with the rising temperature and dropped to 137 ng g(-1) in the treated soil when the treatment temperature reached 600 degrees C, equivalent to a desorption efficiency of 99.85% and a removal efficiency of nearly 100%. The formation of polychlorinated dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) was also monitored: PCDDs and PCDFs were generated, particularly at 400 degrees C, however their formation weakened at higher temperatures and hydrodechlorination dominated.
Mechanisms and extended kinetic model of thermal desorption in organic-contaminated soil

Abstract:Thermal desorption is a preferred technology for site remediation due to its various advantages. To ensure the effective removal of different pollutants in practical applications, it is necessary to understand the kinetic behaviors and removal mechanisms of pollutants in thermal desorption process. This paper explored the thermal desorption processes of five organic pollutants (nitrobenzene, naphthalene, n-dodecane, 1-nitronaphthalene, and phenanthrene) at 50-350 °C in two different subsoils with 6-18% moisture content. The results suggested that the thermal desorption process was well-fitted by the exponential decay model (R2 = 0.972-0.999) and could be divided into two distinct stages. The first stage was relatively fast and highly influenced by soil moisture, while the second stage showed a slower desorption rate due to the constraints imposed by the soil texture and structure. The influence of soil moisture on thermal desorption depended on the octanol/water partition coefficient (KOW) of pollutants. Pollutants with log KOW values lower than the critical value exhibited enhanced thermal desorption, while those with log KOW values higher than the critical value were inhibited. The critical value of log KOW might be between 3.33 and 4.46. Changes in soil texture and structure caused by heating promoted thermal desorption, especially for naphthalene, 1-nitronaphthalene and phenanthrene. The differences in texture and structure between the two soils diminished as the temperature increased. Finally, an extended kinetic model under changing temperature conditions was derived, and the simulation results for the two subsoils were very close to the actual thermogravimetric results, with the differences ranging from -1.28% to 0.94% and from -0.67% to 1.35%, respectively. These findings propose new insights into the influencing mechanisms of soil moisture and structure on the thermal desorption of organic pollutants. The extended kinetic model can provide reference for future kinetic research and guide practical site remediation.
Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron Reduction Coupled with Anaerobic Dechlorination to Degrade Hexachlorocyclohexane Isomers in Historically Contaminated Soil.

Abstract:Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers pose potential threats to the environment and to public health due to their persistence and high toxicity. In this study, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) coupled with microbial degradation by indigenous microorganisms with and without biostimulation was employed to remediate soils highly polluted with HCH. The degradation efficiency of total HCHs in both the "nZVI-only" and "Non-amendment" treatments was approximately 50 %, while in the treatment amended with nZVI and acetate, 85 % of total HCHs was removed. Addition of nZVI and acetate resulted in enrichment of anaerobic microorganisms. The results of quantitative PCR (qPCR) and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing revealed that Desulfotomaculum, Dehalobacter, Geobacter, and Desulfuromonas likely contributed to the depletion of HCH isomers. Moreover, some abiotic factors also favored this removal process, including pH, and the generation of iron sulfides as revealed by the result of Mössbauer spectrometer analysis. Our research provides an improved remediation strategy for soils polluted with HCH isomers and an understanding of the synergistic effect of nZVI and indigenous microorganisms.
Laboratory study of creosote removal from sand at elevated temperatures

Abstract:In situ thermal treatment (ISTT) technologies have been applied at sites impacted by non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs). There is a need to establish expectations for the treatment of semi-volatile NAPLs, including those consisting primarily of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and the potential benefits and limitations of partial NAPL removal. A series of laboratory experiments was conducted to investigate NAPL removal and soil concentrations during the heating of creosote-impacted sand, as well as aqueous concentrations during post-heating dissolution. The results showed co-boiling near the water boiling temperature due to the low volatility of most creosote components, with limited decreases in NAPL saturation (from 30% to 21% of the pore space). Decreases in soil concentration were more substantial than decreases in NAPL saturation (by a factor of 2-180), with greater removal for higher-volatility components at higher treatment temperatures. Results of the dissolution experiments showed mixed results, with decreases in the aqueous concentrations for 12 of 15 components, but increases in aqueous concentrations for phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene after heating to 205 °C or 320 °C. Overall, the results illustrate the utility of bench-scale treatability tests in helping to establish ISTT goals and expectations.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Bioremediation represents one of the most cost-effective technologies for treatment of petroleum hydrocarbons in contaminated surface soils. A major concern for regulatory agencies when evaluating bioremediation is how to determine acceptable levels for residual organics in soil. Although guidelines have been developed for some organics in soil, limited information is available to define acceptable levels of the metabolites of biological degradation. The products of oxidative degradation are likely to be more water soluble and may also be more toxic. The purpose of the current study was to monitor changes in compound concentration and genotoxicity in soils undergoing bioremediation. The site selected for this study was a former wood-preserving site in the northwestern United States. Soil samples were collected over a 4-year period from two 6075-m2 land treatment units. Conditions for biodegradation were enhanced by the addition of water and nutrients, as well as by frequent tilling to add oxygen. Due to the location of the facility, the temperature was conducive to a more rapid rate of biodegradation for approximately 6 months per year. Soil samples were collected using a grid system and solvent extracted. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were quantified in soil extracts using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and genotoxicity measured using the Salmonella/microsome assay. After 2 years of treatment, concentrations of total and carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were reduced to approximately 10% the concentration in the untreated soil. However, the mean weighted activity of the untreated soil was 293 net revertants per g soil, whereas the extracts of soil collected after 2 years induced a mean weighted activity of 325 net revertants per g soil. Thus, although biodegradation clearly reduced the concentration of total and carcinogenic PAHs in the surface soils, the results from the genotoxicity bioassay indicate that there was a lag in the reduction of mutagenicity in treated soils.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as benz[a]anthracene (BA) and dibenz[a,h]anthracene (DBA), which are considered toxic, are frequently found in contaminated soils in Mexico. A laboratory-scale study monitored the degradation of the mixture of these two PAHs in three soils from different Mexican states (Tabasco, Morelos and Veracruz), each with different organic matter content, particle size distribution and incubated under different water content conditions. The hydrocarbons were extracted using microwave digestion and quantified by GC/MS. The removal of the PAHs, the growth of aerobic bacteria and microbial activity were determined in soil samples with and without a bacterial growth inhibitor (HgCl2). The conclusion is that more than 90% of both contaminants was removed from the three soils, independently of the soil water content or the application of a bacterial growth inhibitor. Biological properties of the soils showed changes at the end of the experiment, but the results of the removal of PAHs were similar in the three soils.
