Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the fluoride release properties and the effect on bond strength of two experimental adhesive cements. Synthesized particles of nano-fluorapatite (nano-FA) or nano-fluorohydroxyapatite (nano-FHA) were incorporated into a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (Fuji Ortho LC) and characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Blocks with six different concentrations of nano-FA or nano-FHA were manufactured and their fluoride release properties evaluated by ultraviolet spectrophotometry. The unaltered glass ionomer cement Fuji Ortho LC (GC, control) and the two experimental cements with the highest fluoride release capacities (nano-FA+Fuji Ortho LC (GFA) and nano-FHA+Fuji Ortho LC (GFHA)) were used to bond composite blocks and orthodontic brackets to human enamel. After 24h water storage all specimens were debonded, measuring the micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) and the shear bond strength (SBS), respectively. The optimal concentration of added nano-FA and nano-FHA for maximum fluoride release was 25wt.%, which nearly tripled fluoride release after 70days compared with the control group. GC exhibited a significantly higher SBS than GFHA/GFA, with GFHA and GFA not differing significantly (P>0.05). The μTBS of GC and GFA were significantly higher than that of GFHA (P⩽0.05). The results seem to indicate that the fluoride release properties of Fuji Ortho LC are improved by incorporating nano-FA or nano-FHA, simultaneously maintaining a clinically sufficient bond strength when nano-FA was added.
The possibility of clinical bonding between metal/ceramic brackets to zirconia: in vitro study

Abstract:Objective: The present study aimed to assess the bond strength and durability of six bonding agents concerning their application to metal or ceramic brackets and zirconia. Materials and Methods: Six resin cement bonding agents (XT, XTS, RSBU, RGBU, SBPM, and GMP) were chosen for this investigation. Specimens were either stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h or subjected to 5,000 thermocycles before conducting a Shear Bond Strength (SBS) test. Statistical analysis of the SBS data was performed using three-way ANOVA and Games-Howell tests (α = 0.05). The Adhesive Remnant Index was examined, and the debonding surface details on brackets and zirconia were observed. Results: For metal brackets, all groups demonstrated clinically acceptable bond strength, irrespective of storage conditions, except for the XT group. Regarding ceramic brackets, all groups displayed acceptable bond strength after 24 h of water storage. However, following thermocycling, a significant decrease in SBS was noted across all groups ( p < 0.05), with SBPM exhibiting a higher bond strength. Three-way ANOVA analysis indicated that SBS values were notably influenced by each factor, and an interaction among the three independent variables was observed ( p = 0.000). Conclusion: The reliable bond strength between ceramic brackets and zirconia was significantly lower after thermocycling compared to that of metal brackets and zirconia. SBPM exhibited consistent and robust bond strength between ceramic/metal brackets and zirconia across various storage conditions. Furthermore, the HEMA-free adhesive demonstrated a potentially more consistent bonding performance compared to the HEMA-containing adhesive employed in this study.

Effects of Novel versus Conventional Porcelain Surface Treatments on Shear Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Background: Despite the importance of identifying proper novel porcelain preparation techniques to improve bonding of orthodontic brackets to porcelain surfaces, and despite the highly controversial results on this subject, no systematic review or meta-analysis exists in this regard. Objective: To comparatively summarize the effects of all the available porcelain surface treatments on the shear bond strength (SBS) and adhesive remnant index (ARI) of orthodontic brackets (metal, ceramic, polycarbonate) bonded to feldspathic porcelain restorations. Search Methods. A search was conducted for articles published between January 1990 and February 2021 in PubMed, MeSH, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, Google Scholar, and reference lists. Eligibility Criteria. English-language articles comparing SBS of feldspathic porcelain's surface preparation methods for metal/ceramic/polycarbonate orthodontic brackets were included. Articles comparing silanes/bonding agents/primers without assessing roughening techniques were excluded. Data Analysis. Studies were summarized and risk of bias assessed. Each treatment's SBS was compared with the 6 and 10 MPa recommended thresholds. Studies including comparator (HF [hydrofluoric acid] + silane + bonding) were candidates for meta-analysis. ARI scores were dichotomized. Fixed- and random-effects models were used and forest plots drawn. Egger regressions and/or funnel plots were used to assess publication biases. Results: Thirty-two studies were included (140 groups of SBS, 82 groups of ARI). Bond strengths of 21 studies were meta-analyzed (64 comparisons in 14 meta-analyses). ARIs of 12 articles were meta-analyzed (28 comparisons in 8 meta-analyses). Certain protocols provided bond strengths poorer than HF + silane + bonding: "abrasion + bonding, diamond bur + bonding, HF + bonding, Nd:YAG laser (1 W) + silane + bonding, CO2 laser (2 W/2 Hz) + silane + bonding, and phosphoric acid + silane + bonding." Abrasion + HF + silane + bonding might act almost better than HF + silane + bonding. Abrasion + silane + bonding yields controversial results, being slightly (marginally significantly) better than HF + silane + bonding. Some protocols had controversial results with their overall effects being close to HF + silane + bonding: "Cojet + silane + bonding, diamond bur + silane + bonding, Er:YAG laser (1.6 W/20 Hz) + silane + bonding." Few methods provided bond strengths similar to HF + silane + bonding without much controversy: "Nd:YAG laser (2 W) + silane + bonding" and "phosphoric acid + silane + bonding" (in ceramic brackets). ARIs were either similar to HF + silane + bonding or relatively skewed towards the "no resin on porcelain" end. The risk of bias was rather low. Limitations. All the found studies were in vitro and thus not easily translatable to clinical conditions. Many metasamples were small. Conclusions: The preparation methods HF + silane + bonding, abrasion + HF + silane + bonding, Nd:YAG (2 W) + silane + bonding, and phosphoric acid + silane + bonding (in ceramic brackets) might provide stronger bonds.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effect of enamel conditioning methods, that is, total-etch and rinse (TER), Er,Cr:YSGG (ECYL), and photodynamic therapy (PDT) on the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic metallic brackets bonded using Zirconium oxide experimental adhesive (ZOEA). Methods: Sixty human incisor buccal surfaces were cleaned and allocated into three groups based on the method of enamel surface treatment, that is, TER using 37% phosphoric acid gel, methylene blue photosensitizer activated by PDT and ECYL (n = 20 each). Each group was further divided into two subgroups (n = 10) based on the type of adhesive, that is, ZOEA and experimental adhesive (EA). Metallic brackets were seated using composite resin. Samples were placed in a universal testing machine for SBS and failure mode using the ARI index. One-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey were used for multiple comparisons. ARI was presented in percentages in different investigated groups. Results: TER+ZOEA (17.16 ± 0.41 MPa) displayed the highest bond integrity. However, group PDT+EA (11.34 ± 0.25 MPa) demonstrated the lowest bond scores. The intergroup comparison revealed that the TER system displayed significantly higher SBS values than the PDT and ECYL groups (p < 0.05). The intragroup comparison revealed that enamel conditioned with TER and brackets bonded with ZOEA and EA displayed comparable bond integrity (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Enamel conditioned with TER bonded to a metallic bracket displayed better bond strength than PDT and ECYL. Zirconium oxide nanoparticles incorporated in adhesive have proved to be promising in improving the bond integrity of adhesive.
The Impact of Orthodontic Adhesive Containing Resveratrol, Silver, and Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles on Shear Bond Strength: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:Introduction The goal of orthodontic treatment is to provide patients with esthetic smiles and functional occlusion. Despite best efforts and continuous evolution of materials, white spot lesions present a persistent hindrance to the desired treatment outcome. Nanoparticles have shown efficacy in reducing microbial activity; however, currently, there is a need for natural anti-cariogenic compounds with minimal side effects. Resveratrol is a natural compound belonging to the polyphenol group and has shown promising anti-microbial efficacy. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of dentin bonding agents incorporated with the following three different nanoparticles on shear bond strength: silver nanoparticles (Ag-Np), zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-Np), and resveratrol nanoparticles (RSV-Np). Materials and methods A total of 40 premolar teeth therapeutically extracted were assigned to four equal groups of n=10 each. Groups 1, 2, and 3 used experimental adhesives doped with silver, zinc oxide, and resveratrol nanoparticles, respectively. Group 4 was bonded using unmodified adhesive. The bonded teeth were then subjected to shear bond strength (SBS) testing which was measured using a Universal Testing Machine (model no. UNITEST-10; Pune, India: ACME Engineers). Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 21 (Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.), employing one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test for pairwise comparisons. Results Shear bond strength testing revealed that the control group with unmodified adhesive (8.6 MPa) had the highest SBS, followed by RSV-Np (7.6 MPa), Ag-Np (6.3 MPa), and ZnO-Np (5.65 MPa). Although the experimental groups demonstrated decreased SBS compared to the control, the values for Ag-Np and RSV-Np fell within the acceptable range. Conclusion Resveratrol nanoparticles had the least impact on shear bond strength among the experimental groups. These findings suggest that the incorporation of resveratrol nanoparticles in dentin bonding agents can provide anti-cariogenic effect without significantly impacting the adhesive's mechanical properties thereby providing a new and promising alternative to synthetic nanoparticles. Further studies are recommended to optimize the balance between anti-microbial efficacy and bond strength in clinical applications.

Abstract:ObjectivesTo evaluate the effect of surface treatments and flash-free adhesive on the shear bond strength of ceramic orthodontic brackets bonded to materials used for the fabrication of CAD/CAM provisional crowns.Materials and methodsSpecimens (n = 160) from each provisional material (CAD-Temp and C-Temp) were categorized into four groups according to the surface treatment methods: C (no surface treatment), HP (37% H3PO4), DB (mechanical roughening by diamond bur), and SB (mechanical roughening by blasting). Maxillary central incisor ceramic brackets (Clarity™ Advanced ceramic brackets, 3 M Unitek) were bonded to the conditioned provisional materials according to the used adhesive system (n = 20), APC PLUS or APC flash-free. All specimens were evaluated for shear bond strength testing (SBS) and the adhesive remnant index (ARI). Data were analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U tests.ResultsC-Temp significantly recorded higher SBS than CAD-Temp (24.0 and 16.0 MPa, respectively) (p < 0001). DB and SB groups utilizing flash-free adhesive significantly recorded higher SBS (18.2 and 24.0 MPa, respectively) (P < 0.05) compared to other groups in the tested materials. Higher ARI scores were recorded in CAD-Temp and flash-free adhesive.ConclusionsMechanical surface treatments and flash-free adhesive would enhance SBS of ceramic orthodontic brackets to CAD/CAM provisional materials. The higher ARI scores reported with CAD-Temp and flash-free adhesive reduce chair time for excess removal.Clinical relevanceBonding of orthodontic brackets to provisional restorations is a challenge for orthodontists in adult comprehensive cases that could be improved by an appropriate provisional material, surface treatments, and adhesive system.

Effects of Antioxidants on the Shear Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets Bonded to Bleached Human Teeth: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different concentrations of sodium ascorbate (SA), green tea (GT), and chamomile (CM) on the shear bond strength (SBS) of metal orthodontic brackets bonded to teeth bleached with 40% hydrogen peroxide (HP). Materials and methods: Ninety-four sound premolars were divided into eight groups: group I (control + no bleaching), group II (bleaching + immediate bonding), group III (bleaching + 10% SA), group IV (bleaching + 35% SA), group V (bleaching + 0.5% GT), group VI (bleaching + 1% GT), group VII (bleaching + 0.5% CM), and group VIII (bleaching + 1% CM). In groups III-VIII, teeth were treated with the antioxidants for 10 minutes after bleaching with 40% HP, but before bonding. All the specimens were bonded with the resilience adhesive, and the SBS was tested with a universal testing machine (Instron 5965). The cross-head speed to break the bond was 1 mm/minute. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) was tested under 50× magnification. One-way analysis of variance, Tukey's post hoc, and Chi-squared tests were used for analysis (p ≤ 0.05). Results: The differences in SBS among the eight tested groups were highly significant (p < 0.001). Comparison of the eight groups using Tukey's post hoc test revealed significantly lower SBS (p < 0.001) in test groups II, III, IV, and VIII than in group I. Adhesive remnant index scores showed significant intergroup differences (p = 0.005). Most groups had a failure score of 1 (<50% of the bonding material adhering to the tooth), whereas groups II and VIII showed a failure score of 0 (no material adhering to the tooth). Conclusion: Bond strength can be enhanced by using 0.5% or 1% GT or 0.5% CM to allow bracket bonding immediately after bleaching. Clinical significance: The use of antioxidants would allow clinicians to bleach teeth before orthodontic treatment without delaying bonding.

Abstract:Background: Enamel demineralization is an unavoidable adverse effect encountered with bonding brackets in orthodontic therapy. Introducing nanoparticles into the composite adhesive paste can prevent enamel demineralization. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is known to exhibit direct antimicrobial efficiency. This study aimed to assess the antibacterial efficiency and shear bond strength (SBS) of an orthodontic bonding composite infiltrated with TiO2 nanoparticles. Materials and methods: This in vitro study evaluated the efficiency of TiO2 nanoparticle-incorporated light-curing orthodontic composite paste (ENLIGHT, ORMCO). Twenty extracted premolars were randomly and equally allocated to the two study groups, N = 10. While a conventional composite was utilized for the bonding brackets in Group I, a TiO2-incorporated composite was used in Group 2. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores given by Artun and Bergland et al. and SBS were determined. Furthermore, the antimicrobial efficiency was estimated using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)/minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and agar well diffusion assay for six composite disc specimens. The results were statistically analyzed using the chi-square test and Student's t test, at P < 0.05. Results: After 24 h of curing, no statistical mean difference was observed between the two groups in terms of ARI or SBS scores (P > 0.05). However, there was a significant increase in the antimicrobial efficiency of Group II when compared with Group I (P < 0.05). Conclusion: TiO2 nanoparticle-incorporated orthodontic composites improve the antimicrobial efficiency with no significant change in the SBS. The ARI scores indicate the presence of 50% remnant orthodontic composite on the tooth enamel surface post debonding.
Influence of surface treatments on bond strength of metal and ceramic brackets to a novel CAD/CAM hybrid ceramic material

Abstract:This study evaluated the effect of four different surface treatments methods on the shear bond strength (SBS) of ceramic and metal brackets to Vita Enamic (VE) CAD/CAM hybrid ceramic. A total of 240 plates (10 mm × 10 mm × 3 mm) were cut from VE ceramic blocks and divided into two groups. In each group, four subgroups were prepared by hydrofluoric acid (HF); phosphoric acid (H3PO4); diamond ceramic grinding bur; and silica coating using CoJet system (CJ). Maxillary central incisor metal (Victory Series) and ceramic (Clarity) brackets were bonded with light-cure composite and then stored in artificial saliva for 1 week and thermocycled. The SBS test was performed, and the failure types were classified with adhesive remnant index scores. Surface morphology of the ceramic was characterized after treatment using a scanning electron microscope. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA, Tukey HSD test, and Weibull analysis. SBS was significantly affected by the type of bracket and by type of treatment (P < 0.001). Specimens treated with CJ presented with significantly higher SBS compared to other groups (P < 0.05). Improvements in SBS values (MPa) were found in the following order: CJ > HF > Bur > H3PO4. Ceramic bracket showed higher SBS compared to metal bracket. Adhesive failures between the ceramic and composite resin were the predominant mode of failure in all groups. Surface treatment of VE CAD/CAM hybrid ceramic with silica coating enhanced the adhesion with ceramic and metal brackets.

Abstract:Introduction: With advances in materials for bonding in orthodontics, errors regarding amount of adhesive to be used can be controlled. Adhesive Precoated (APCTM) Brackets were introduced to reduce the step of applying conventional adhesive on base of the bracket. Moreover, APCTM Flash Free Adhesive System (FFAS) eliminated the step of removal of excessive adhesive around the brackets. Aim: To compare Shear Bond Strength (SBS), Bonding Time (BT) and Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) between Conventional Adhesive System (CAS) and APCTM FFAS using metal brackets Materials and Methods: This in-vitro study was carried out in the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics at Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) Dental College and Hospital, Sangli, Maharashtra, India. A total of 78 teeth with metal braces were split into two groups, with 39 samples each receiving treatment with the CAS and the APCTM FFAS. Shear bond forces were applied to each sample using a universal testing machine and recorded in Megapascals (MPa) to provide an indication of SBS. Both Groups’ BT was quantified in terms of seconds. The stereomicroscope indexes of Artun J and Bergland S were used to determine ARI. Microsoft Excel was used for data entry, while Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24.0 was used for analysis. The normality of the data was tested using two different t-tests. In terms of mean and standard deviation, descriptive statistics were represented. A significant level of 0.05 was used. Results: SBS values were 10.35±3.55 MPa and 11.23±3.82 MPa in CAS and FFAS respectively. No significant difference was found among the two groups (p≤0.29) in SBS. BT was significantly (p≤0.001) less in FFAS (95.54±8.72 seconds) compared to CAS (140.85±16.62 seconds). ARI was significantly (p≤0.002) less in FFAS (1.79±0.80) in comparison with CAS (1.23±0.74). Conclusion: FFAS brackets perform better in comparison to CAS in case of BT and ARI. Both groups show no significant difference in SBS.
Effect of Different Surface Treatments and Orthodontic Bracket Type on Shear Bond Strength of High-Translucent Zirconia: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:Objective. Considering the increasing number of adults seeking orthodontic treatment, and the possible need for bracket bonding to monolithic zirconia restorations, knowledge about the preferred type of bracket (metal/ceramic) and the most efficient surface treatment is imperative to achieve acceptable shear bond strength (SBS). This study aimed to assess the effect of different surface treatments and orthodontic bracket types on SBS of high-translucent zirconia. Materials and Methods. Totally, 248 disc-shaped zirconia specimens were assigned to two groups for bonding to metal and ceramic brackets. Each group was divided into four subgroups (n = 31) for the following surface treatments: no surface treatment (control group), airborne-particle abrasion (APA), tribochemical silica coating with CoJet, and CO2 laser irradiation. The mean surface roughness (Ra value) was measured. The SBS was measured after bracket bonding and thermocycling. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA, Tukey, Kruskal–Wallis, Mann–Whitney, and Fisher exact tests, and Bonferroni correction ( α = 0. 05 ). Results. The mean Ra value was significantly different among the surface treatment subgroups ( P < 0.001 ). The APA and CoJet subgroups were not significantly different regarding Ra ( P = 0.754 ). All other pairwise comparisons yielded significant differences ( P < 0.001 ). Bracket type, surface treatment, and their interaction significantly affected the SBS ( P < 0.001 ). Ceramic brackets bonded to zirconia surfaces treated with CoJet yielded the maximum SBS while ceramic brackets bonded to control and lased surfaces resulted in minimum SBS. No significant difference was noted in the SBS of different surface treatment groups when metal brackets were used ( P > 0.05 ). Conclusions. The use of ceramic brackets and CoJet surface treatment would be the most appropriate combination to achieve optimal bonding to high-translucent zirconia restorations.

One essential factor for the quality of such treatment is bracket bonding on ceramics. For testing the adhesive bond between the bracket and the ceramic surface it is important to consider the static or cyclic loading that goes along with it. Methods: Metallic Brackets were adhesively fixed on zirconia ceramic blocks in a simulated leveling phase using two different primers (Monobond S and Monobond Etch & Prime). Half of the metallic brackets were activated using a 0.14-nickel titanium wire, while the other half remained non-activated. Shear bond testing (SBT) was performed after thermocycling. Furthermore the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) was analyzed. Results: SBT resulted in significantly higher shear bond values when Monobond Etch & Prime was used compared to the use of Monobond S. Activation of the brackets did not show different results in comparison to the non-activated brackets. The ARI did not indicate cement remnants on the ceramic surface, regardless of the primer and the activation status. Conclusions: The use of Monobond Etch & Prime has great potential for the bonding of brackets on dental zirconia ceramics.

Abstract:Background: Developing efficient bonding techniques for orthodontic brackets and all-ceramic materials continues to pose a clinical difficulty. This study aimed to evaluate the shear bond strengths (SBS) of metal and ceramic brackets to various all-ceramic CAD-CAM materials, such as lithium disilicate CAD (LDS-CAD), polymer-infiltrated ceramic (PIC), zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass ceramic (ZLS), and 5YTZP zirconia after different surface treatments and thermal cycling. Materials and methods: The samples were divided into two groups to be bonded with ceramic and metal lower incisor brackets. Each group was subdivided into a control group devoid of any surface treatment, 10% HF acid (HFA) etching, ceramic etch & prime (MEP), Al2O3 air abrasion, and medium grit diamond bur roughening. After surface treatment, brackets were bonded with composite resin cement, thermal cycled, and tested for shear bond strength. The failed surfaces were evaluated with a digital microscope to analyse the type of failure. The data were statistically analysed using a one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests at p < 0.05. Results: The highest mean bond strengths were found with HFA etching in LDS-CAD (13.17 ± 0.26 MPa) and ZLS (12.85 0.52 MPa). Diamond bur recorded the lowest mean bond strength roughening across all the ceramic groups. There were significant differences in mean shear bond values per surface treatment (p < 0.001) and ceramic materials. Conclusion: Among the surface treatment protocols evaluated, HFA etching and MEP surface treatment resulted in enhanced bond strength of both ceramic and metal brackets to CAD-CAM all ceramic materials.
In vitro Analysis of Shear Bond Strength and Adhesive Remnant Index of Stainless Steel Brackets with Different Adhesive Systems to Enamel.

Abstract:AIM This study aimed at evaluating and comparing the bond strength of stainless steel brackets bonded with multiple orthodontic adhesives. MATERIALS AND METHODS About 60 premolars extracted to create space during orthodontic treatment were included in the present study. Premolar stainless steel brackets of size 0.022" slot with the surface area of bracket base of 11.15 mm2 were used. The premolars were divided randomly into three groups of 20 in each. Group I: Conventional Acid Etching (Transbond XT); group II: Seventh-generation adhesive materials (Xeno V); and group III: Flowable composite (Filtek Z350 XT). Calculation of Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) was done and shear bond strength was assessed. The probability level of 0.05 was considered as clinically significant. RESULTS The shear bond strength was highest in group II (17.46 ± 1.36), which was followed by group I (15.33 ± 2.78) and the least was shown by group III (13.96 ± 1.44). A statistically significant difference was found between group I vs II, group II vs III, and group III vs II. Utmost prevalence of about 35% was found in Transbond XT with an ARI score of 3 (followed by all adhesive left on the tooth), Filtek Z350 XT with 20%, and the least was found with Xeno V, about 5%. The probability was found to be p = 0.025 among different groups, which is statistically significant according to chi-square test. CONCLUSION The study concluded that the adhesive materials of the seventh generation showed higher shear bond strength than that of the flowable composite and conventional acid etching. The ARI indicated that a minimum amount of the residual adhesive was found on the surface of the enamel after debonding. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study helps orthodontists to select appropriate adhesive and orthodontic brackets for the benefit of the patient and to distinguish the distribution of stress homogeneously within the layer of cement while loading and subsequently minimizing the damage to the enamel during the debonding of orthodontic brackets.

Abstract:The results of orthodontic therapy largely depend, among other factors, on the preparation of the tooth enamel itself and the choice of material used to bond orthodontic brackets. The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the shear bond strength (SBS) and adhesive remnant index (ARI) score of thermo-cured glass–ionomers on different pretreated enamel, in comparison with the commonly used composite cement. Three commercially available nano-ionomer or highly viscous glass–ionomer cements (EQUIA Forte® Fil, EQUIA Fil, Ketac Universal) and two types of compo-sites (Heliosit Orthodontic, ConTec Go!) were investigated in this study. The research involved two hundred human premolars. The teeth were cleaned and polished, then randomly divided into five groups according to the enamel preparation method and the type of material. The enamel was treated in three different ways: polyacrylic acid, phosphoric acid, 5% NaOCl + etching with phosphoric acid, and a control group without treatment. Glass–ionomer cement was thermo-cured with heat from a polymerization unit during setting. Statistical analysis was performed using a Chi-square test and one-way ANOVA for independent samples. Spearman's Rho correlation coefficient was used to examine the relationship. Regardless of the material type, the results indicated that the weakest bond between the bracket and tooth enamel was found in samples without enamel pretreatment. The majority of the materials stayed on the brackets in samples without enamel preparation, according to ARI scores. The study's findings demonstrated that the strength of the adhesion between the bracket and enamel is greatly influenced by enamel etching and glass–ionomer thermo-curing. Clinical investigations would be required to validate the outcomes.

Abstract:Abstract Objectives Due to the high demand for all-ceramic restorations, monolithic zirconia restorations are nowadays frequently used. With the demand for adult orthodontic treatments, orthodontists need to be mindful of the quality of their brackets bonding to this type of material, as it requires special conditioning. This study aimed to compare different surface treatments of zirconia when bonding metal or ceramic orthodontic brackets. The objectives are to compare the shear bond strength; the amount of adhesive remaining on the surface of the material; the incidence of adhesive, cohesive, and mixed failures; and the occurrence of zirconia fractures. Materials and Methods Forty monolithic blocks of zirconia of a diameter of 10 mm and a length of 10 mm were prepared and randomly divided into two groups (n = 20): metallic or ceramic brackets. Each group was subsequently divided into two subgroups (n = 10) depending on the surface preparation (laser treatment or airborne particle abrasion): SMB (airborne particle abrasion, metal bracket), SCB (airborne particle abrasion, ceramic bracket), LMB (laser; metal bracket), and LCB (laser, ceramic bracket). The samples were tested for shear bond strength using a universal testing machine. The adhesive remnant index and the occurrence of zirconia fractures and different types of failures were assessed by optical and electron microscopy. Statistical Analysis Results were analyzed using analysis of variance. Results The differences were significant between the metallic (SMB, LMB) and ceramic (SCB, LCB) bracket groups with regard to shear bond strength, with respectively 23.29 ± 5.34 MPa, 21.59 ± 4.03 MPa, 20.06 ± 4.05 MPa, and 17.55 ± 3.88 MPa. In terms of surface treatment, no statistical differences were found between the different groups. Conclusion Metal brackets have a greater bond strength than ceramic brackets when cemented to zirconia. The surface treatment of zirconia surface has no influence on the shear bond strength.

Abstract:We present the absolute frequency measurement of the transition 1S<inf>0</inf> – 3P<inf>0</inf> at 578 nm in ytterbium 171 realized in an optical lattice frequency standard relative to the cryogenic caesium fountain ITCsF2. The measurement result is 518 295 836 590 863.59(31) Hz with a relative standard uncertainty of 5.9 × 10−16. A contribution of 1.6 × 10−16 is coming from the ytterbium clock and we are working to reduce this contribution to the 1 × 10−17 level.

Abstract:BackgroundThe purpose of this in-vitro study was to examine the effect of incorporating different concentrations of Zirconium oxide-Titanium dioxide (ZrO2-TiO2) nanoparticles, which can have antibacterial properties, on the mechanical properties of an orthodontic adhesive.MethodsZrO2-TiO2 (Zirconium oxide, HWNANO, Hongwu International Group Ltd, China) -Titanium dioxide, Nanoshell, USA) nanopowder were incorporated into orthodontic adhesive (Transbond XT, 3 M Unitek, Monrovia, USA) with different concentrations (0.5% weight nonofiller and 1% weight nanofiller). The size of nanoparticle was 70–80 nm for ZrO2 and less than 50 nm for TiO2. For measuring the shear bond strength of the three groups of orthodontic adhesives [Transbond (control), Transbond mixed with 0.5% weight ZrO2-TiO2, and Transbond mixed with 1% weight ZrO2-TiO2], 30 freshly extracted human first premolars were used and bonded with stainless steel metal brackets (Dentaurum®, Discovery®, Deutschland), using the 3 orthodontic adhesives and 3 M Unitek; Transbond TM Plus Self-Etching Primer (10 samples in each group). The recorded values of compressive strength and tensile strength (measured separately on 10 samples of orthodontic adhesives (add the 3 D size of sample, light cured for 40 s on both sides) of each orthodontic adhesives), as well as the shear bond strength in Mega Pascal unit (MPa) were collected and exposed to one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s post-hoc tests.Resultsorthodontic adhesive with 1% weight ZrO2-TiO2 showed the highest mean compressive (73.42 ± 1.55 MPa, p: 0.003, F: 12.74), tensile strength (8.65 ± 0.74 MPa, p: 0.001, F: 68.20), and shear bond strength (20.05 ± 0.2 MPa, p: 0.001, F: 0.17).ConclusionsAdding ZrO2-TiO2 nanoparticle to orthodontic adhesive increased compressive strength, tensile strength, and shear bond strength in vitro, but in vivo studies and randomized clinical trials are needed to validate the present findings.
