Abstract:Since the early 1980's there have been several different strategies designed and applied to the remediation of subsurface environment including physical, chemical and biological approaches. They have had varying degrees of success in remediating contaminants from subsurface soils and groundwater. The objective of this review is to examine the range of technologies for the remediation of contaminants, particularly petroleum hydrocarbons, in subsurfaces with a specific focus on bioremediation and electrokinetic remediation. Further, this review examines the efficiency of remediation carried out by combining bioremediation and electrokinetic remediation. Surfactants, which are slowly becoming the selected chemicals for mobilizing contaminants, are also considered in this review. The current knowledge gaps of these technologies and techniques identified which could lead to development of more efficient ways of utilizing these technologies or development of a completely new technology.

Abstract:The global production of radioactive wastes is expected to increase in the coming years as more countries have resorted to adopting nuclear power to decrease their reliance on fossil-fuel-generated energy. Discoveries of remediation methods that can remove radionuclides from radioactive wastes, including those discharged to the environment, are therefore vital to reduce risks-upon-exposure radionuclides posed to humans and wildlife. Among various remediation approaches available, microbe-mediated radionuclide remediation have limited reviews regarding their advances. This review provides an overview of the sources and existing classification of radioactive wastes, followed by a brief introduction to existing radionuclide remediation (physical, chemical, and electrochemical) approaches. Microbe-mediated radionuclide remediation (bacterial, myco-, and phycoremediation) is then extensively discussed. Bacterial remediation involves biological processes like bioreduction, biosorption, and bioprecipitation. Bioreduction involves the reduction of water-soluble, mobile radionuclides to water-insoluble, immobile lower oxidation states by ferric iron-reducing, sulfate-reducing, and certain extremophilic bacteria, and in situ remediation has become possible by adding electron donors to contaminated waters to enrich indigenous iron- and sulfate-reducing bacteria populations. In biosorption, radionuclides are associated with functional groups on the microbial cell surface, followed by getting reduced to immobilized forms or precipitated intracellularly or extracellularly. Myco- and phycoremediation often involve processes like biosorption and bioaccumulation, where the former is influenced by pH and cell concentration. A Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis on microbial remediation is also performed. It is suggested that two research directions: genetic engineering of radiation-resistant microorganisms and co-application of microbe-mediated remediation with other remediation methods could potentially result in the discovery of in situ or ex situ microbe-involving radioactive waste remediation applications with high practicability. Finally, a comparison between the strengths and weaknesses of each approach is provided.

Abstract:With the increasing development of industry and urbanization, heavy metal contaminated sites have become progressively conspicuous, particularly by unreasonable emissions from electroplating, nonferrous metals smelting, mine tailing, etc. In recent years, soil remediation technologies for heavy metal contaminated sites have developed rapidly. New and effective remediation technologies have emerged successively, and more successful practical applications have appeared. Therefore, systematical summarization of the current progress is essential. As a result, in this paper, some mainstream soil remediation technologies for heavy metal contaminated sites, including physical remediation (soil thermal desorption and soil replacement), bioremediation (phytoremediation and microbial remediation), chemical remediation (chemical leaching, chemical stabilization, electrokinetic remediation-permeable reactive barrier, and chemical oxidation/reduction), as well as various combined remediation are comprehensively reviewed. The influencing factors, advantages, disadvantages, remediation mechanism, and practical applications are also deeply discussed. Besides, the corresponding remediation strategies are put forward for the remediation of heavily polluted sites such as the chemical industry, smelting, and tailing areas. Overall, this review will be beneficial for the in-depth understanding and provide references for the reasonable selection and development of soil remediation technology for heavy metal contaminated sites.

Abstract:The safety and reliability of nuclear facilities hinge critically on addressing metallic surface contamination in nuclear waste waters. This contamination poses significant hazards to the environment, human health, and the structural integrity of equipment. Key contaminants include heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury from industrial processes, and radioactive isotopes like uranium, plutonium, and cesium, which present severe radiological risks due to their formation during nuclear reactions and fuel cycles. Corrosive chemicals further exacerbate the problem by promoting the accumulation of rust and other metallic compounds. Additionally, organic contaminants from equipment leaks and microbiological elements, including fungi and bacteria, can form biofilms that accelerate the corrosion process. The objective of this review is to evaluate the various techniques used to identify and quantify these contaminants on metal surfaces, such as surface sampling and microbiological analysis. By implementing appropriate mitigation measures based on these findings, it is possible to reduce risks and ensure the safety and operational integrity of nuclear plants. This comprehensive assessment aims to provide a framework for enhancing contamination management practices in nuclear facilities.

Abstract:Uranium is a naturally existing radioactive element present in the Earth's crust. It exhibits lithophilic characteristics, indicating its tendency to be located near the surface of the Earth and tightly bound to oxygen. It is ecotoxic, hence the need for its removal from the aqueous environment. This paper focuses on the variety of water treatment processes for the removal of uranium from water and this includes physical (membrane separation, adsorption and electrocoagulation), chemical (ion exchange, photocatalysis andÂ persulfate reduction), and biological (bio-reduction and biosorption) approaches. It was observed that membrane filtration and ion exchange are the most popular and promising processes for this application. Membrane processes have high throughput but with the challenge of high power requirements and fouling. Besides high pH sensitivity, ion exchange does not have any major challenges related to its application. Several other unique observations were derived from this review. Chitosan/ Chlorella pyrenoidosa composite adsorbent bearing phosphate ligand, hydroxyapatite aerogel and MXene/graphene oxide composite has shown super-adsorbent performance (>1000Â mg/g uptake capacity) for uranium. Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, reverse osmosis (RO) membranes and electrocoagulation have been observed not to go below 97% uranium removal/conversion efficiency for most cases reported in the literature. Heat persulfate reduction has been explored quite recently and shown to achieve as high as 86% uranium reduction efficiency. We anticipate that future studies would explore hybrid processes (which are any combinations of multiple conventional techniques) to solve various aspects of the process design and performance challenges.

Abstract:Natural uranium is a crucial resource for clean nuclear energy, which has brought significant economic and social benefits to humanity. However, the development and utilization of uranium resources have also resulted in the accumulation of vast amounts of uranium mill tailings (UMTs), which pose a potential threat to human health and the ecological environment. This paper reviews the research progress on UMTs treatment technologies, including cover disposal, solidification disposal, backfilling disposal, and bioremediation methods. It is found that cover disposal is a versatile method for the long-term management of UMTs, the engineering performance and durability of the cover system can be improved by choosing suitable stabilizers for the cover layer. Solidification disposal can convert UMTs into solid waste for permanent disposal, but it produces a large amount of waste and requires high operating costs; it is necessary to explore the effectiveness and efficiency of solidification disposal for UMTs, while minimizing the bad environmental impact. Backfilling disposal realizes the resource utilization of solid waste, but the high radon exhalation rate caused by the UMTs backfilling also needs to be considered. Bioremediation methods have low investment costs and are less likely to cause secondary pollution, but the remediation efficiency is low, it can be combined with other treatment technologies to remedy the defects of a single remediation method. The article concludes with key issues and corresponding suggestions for the current UMTs treatment methods, which can provide theoretical guidance and reference for further development and application of radioactive pollution treatment of UMTs.

Abstract:Mercury contamination in soil, water and air is associated with potential toxicity to humans and ecosystems. Industrial activities such as coal combustion have led to increased mercury (Hg) concentrations in different environmental media. This review critically evaluates recent developments in technological approaches for the remediation of Hg contaminated soil, water and air, with a focus on emerging materials and innovative technologies. Extensive research on various nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nanosheets and magnetic nanocomposites, for mercury removal are investigated. This paper also examines other emerging materials and their characteristics, including graphene, biochar, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as well as other materials such as clay minerals and manganese oxides. Based on approaches including adsorption/desorption, oxidation/reduction and stabilization/containment, the performances of innovative technologies with the aid of these materials were examined. In addition, technologies involving organisms, such as phytoremediation, algae-based mercury removal, microbial reduction and constructed wetlands, were also reviewed, and the role of organisms, especially microorganisms, in these techniques are illustrated.

Abstract:Nuclear power reactors are operating in 31 countries around the world. Along with reactor operations, activities like mining, fuel fabrication, fuel reprocessing and military operations are the major contributors to the nuclear waste. The presence of a large number of fission products along with multiple oxidation state long-lived radionuclides such as neptunium (237Np), plutonium (239Pu), americium (241/243Am) and curium (245Cm) make the waste streams a potential radiological threat to the environment. Commonly high concentrations of cesium (137Cs) and strontium (90Sr) are found in a nuclear waste. These radionuclides are capable enough to produce potential health threat due to their long half-lives and effortless translocation into the human body. Besides the radionuclides, heavy metal contamination is also a serious issue. Heavy metals occur naturally in the earth crust and in low concentration, are also essential for the metabolism of living beings. Bioaccumulation of these heavy metals causes hazardous effects. These pollutants enter the human body directly via contaminated drinking water or through the food chain. This issue has drawn the attention of scientists throughout the world to device eco-friendly treatments to remediate the soil and water resources. Various physical and chemical treatments are being applied to clean the waste, but these techniques are quite expensive, complicated and comprise various side effects. One of the promising techniques, which has been pursued vigorously to overcome these demerits, is phytoremediation. The process is very effective, eco-friendly, easy and affordable. This technique utilizes the plants and its associated microbes to decontaminate the low and moderately contaminated sites efficiently. Many plant species are successfully used for remediation of contaminated soil and water systems. Remediation of these systems turns into a serious problem due to various anthropogenic activities that have significantly raised the amount of heavy metals and radionuclides in it. Also, these activities are continuously increasing the area of the contaminated sites. In this context, an attempt has been made to review different modes of the phytoremediation and various terrestrial and aquatic plants which are being used to remediate the heavy metals and radionuclide-contaminated soil and aquatic systems. Natural and synthetic enhancers, those hasten the process of metal adsorption/absorption by plants, are also discussed. The article includes 216 references.

Abstract:The global use of petroleum hydrocarbons for energy and raw materials in various applications has increased with extensive release of a wide variety of contaminants into the environment, affecting soil, surface water and groundwater. The effect results to numerous health, ecological and environmental issues. However, treatment of contamination and pollution caused by petroleum hydrocarbons is a huge and laborious work. It involves several in situ or ex situ treatments comprising containment, separation and destruction which include biological, chemical, physico-chemical, thermal and heat, electric and electromagnetic, acoustic and ultrasonic treatment methods. These treatment methods involve several other techniques and strategies as listed in this review. The health risks pose by petroleum hydrocarbon pollution have driven scientists to research, develop and implement risk-based remediation strategies for restoration and reclamation of affected environments. To select the best treatment option for remediation, it is important to comprehend the nature, composition, properties, sources of pollution, type of environment, fate, transport and distribution of the pollutants, mechanism of degradation, interaction and relationships with microorganisms, the intrinsic and extrinsic factors affecting remediation. It helps to evaluate and predict the chemical behaviour of the pollutants with the short and long-term effects and mitigate the effects of pollution and limit exposure to the pollutants. Despite the available remediation options for petroleum hydrocarbon management and removal, sufficient and complete remediation can be implemented by adoption of proper approach derived from risk-based management procedure that can be practical, scientifically defensible, widely adapted, sustainable, non-invasive, eco-friendly and cost-efficient. This paper provides an overview of the various remediation and treatment technologies derived from risk-based approaches that are used for isolation, containment, separation, restoration reclamation and remediation of soil, sediments, surface water and groundwater contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons and organic compounds.

Abstract:The resuspension of radioactively contaminated particles in a built environment, such as from urban surfaces like foliage, building exteriors, and roadways, is described empirically by current plume and dosimetry models used for hazard assessment and long-term risk purposes. When applying these models to radiological contamination emergencies affecting urban areas, the accuracy of the results for recent contamination deposition is impacted in two main ways. First, the data supporting the underlying resuspension equations was acquired for open, quiescent conditions with no vehicle traffic or human activities, so it is not necessarily representative of the urban environment. Second, mechanical disturbance by winds in urban canyons and during emergency operations caused by vehicle traffic and human activities are not directly considered by the equations. Accordingly, plume and dosimetry models allow the user to input certain compensating values, but the models do not necessarily supply users instructions on what values to use. This manuscript reviews the available literature to comprehensively and consistently pool data for resuspension due to mechanically induced resuspension applicable to urban contamination. Because there are few studies that directly measured radioactive resuspension due to vehicles and pedestrians, this review novelly draws on a range of other studies involving non-radioactive particles, ranging from outdoor air pollution emissions to indoor allergen transport. The results lead to tabulated, recommended values for specific conditions in the emergency phase to help users of plume and dosimetry models maintain the conservativeness needed to properly capture the potential radiation dose posed by mechanically induced resuspension. These values are of benefit to model users until better data are available. The results also suggest the types of data that may result in improved plume and dose modeling.

Abstract:The genomes of many plant viruses have a coding capacity limited to <10 proteins, yet it is becoming increasingly clear that individual plant virus proteins may interact with several targets in the host for establishment of infection. As new functions are uncovered for individual viral proteins, virologists have realized that the apparent simplicity of the virus genome is an illusion that belies the true impact that plant viruses have on host physiology. In this review, we discuss our evolving understanding of the function of the P6 protein of Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV), a process that was initiated nearly 35 years ago when the CaMV P6 protein was first described as the 'major inclusion body protein' (IB) present in infected plants. P6 is now referred to in most articles as the transactivator (TAV)/viroplasmin protein, because the first viral function to be characterized for the Caulimovirus P6 protein beyond its role as an inclusion body protein (the viroplasmin) was its role in translational transactivation (the TAV function). This review will discuss the currently accepted functions for P6 and then present the evidence for an entirely new function for P6 in intracellular movement.

Abstract:This study offers an updated overview of the soil and water remediation strategies employed to address the widespread environmental and public health risks associated with explosive compounds, particularly TNT and RDX. Recognizing soil contamination originating from military activities, industrial accidents, and historical land use, this review delves into physical, chemical, and biological approaches to mitigating ecological and human health concerns. While physical methods like excavation and disposal are effective, their applicability is constrained by cost and logistical challenges for large contaminated areas. Chemical methods, such as oxidation and reduction, focus on transforming explosives into less toxic byproducts. Biological remediation utilizing plants and microorganisms emerges as a cost-effective and sustainable alternative. This review highlights challenges, including the persistence of explosive compounds, potential groundwater leaching, and the necessity for long-term monitoring. Emphasizing the need for site-specific strategies, considering the contaminant type, concentration, soil properties, and regulatory requirements, this study advocates for integrated and sustainable remediation approaches in pilot-scale applications. It concludes by evaluating the appropriate solution based on the advantages and disadvantages of the categories of soil and groundwater remediation methods. The duration, the effectiveness, and the cost of available technologies were estimated.

Abstract:The average share of nuclear energy in electricity production is expected to increase under the background of the global pursuit towards carbon neutrality. Conjugating with its rapid development, the wave of decommissioning and dismantling (D&D) of nuclear facilities is coming. The surface decontamination is a prerequisite to D&D, which will make it easier and reduce the volume of radioactive wastes. However, there are no comprehensive studies on the decontamination methods, which is not helpful for the sustainable development of nuclear energy and environment protection. Therefore, in this work, the current status and future trends of global energy and nuclear energy are first analyzed. Then, various decontamination approaches are comparatively studied, including cleaning mechanisms, application subjects, and intrinsic advantages and disadvantages. Finally, the criteria and factors for selecting a decontamination process, the challenges, and future studies are directed. Among the mechanical methods, laser-based cleaning is high-speed, having automation ability, and thus is promising, although it creates a dust and airborne contaminant hazard. In further studies, factors such as selecting a proper laser facility, optimizing operating parameters, and designing a high-efficiency dust collection system could be studied. Regarding the chemical method, chemical gels are good for decontaminating complex shapes and vertical and overhead surfaces. In addition, they can enhance other decon agents’ efficiency by improving contact time. However, the formulation of colloidal gels is complex and no gel type is useful for all contaminants. Therefore, novel and versatile gels need be developed to enlarge their application field. Combining various decontamination methods will often have better results and thus a reasonable and effective combination of these decontamination methods has become the main direction.

Abstract:Environmental remediation is a research field transformed over the past two decades by the integration of engineered nanoscale materials. The market for nanotechnology in environmental applications is rapidly growing, signifying the importance of such advancements in practice as well as research. Most nano-enabled remediation challenges in water, soil and air treatment are addressed by two primary phenomena—contaminant degradation by reduction/oxidation reactions or contaminant sequestration through adsorption processes. Despite the scientific accessibility of these fields by virtue of their shared treatment mechanisms, the unique engineering and physical challenges associated with implementation require field-specific solutions and create research bubbles where scientists and engineers may be unfamiliar with current research in parallel areas. Consequently, this review is focused on summarizing the key nano-enabled technologies and their mechanisms in the fields of water, soil and air treatment, as well as describing recent advances and highlighting areas with clear direction for further development. This review covers nano-enabled processes including photocatalysis in air and water treatment, nZVI-mediated reduction and adsorption processes in soil and water treatment, and CO2 capture and reduction including the state-of-the-art materials driving research focused on improving these technologies. This review is intended as a platform for researchers to understand how their expertise fits into the larger community of remediation technology as well as to provide direction for literature review of parallel fields suiting their interest. We conclude by identifying core research focuses and underdeveloped research directions in each of the three areas, most notably, a need for guided evaluation of meaningful composite materials for next-generation catalysts.

Abstract:Pesticide contamination in soil poses serious risk to both the environment and human health. The pollution occurs when pesticides are produced in pesticide-manufacturing plants and applied in agricultural fields. Besides pesticides, solvent used during synthesis and environmental-transformed products could also exert toxic effects to both individual organism and general population in soil and surrounding water bodies. Exposure through direct contact, food product or contaminated water could lead to human health implications. In this review, we focus on the current status of pesticide contamination in soil. The environmental behaviors of pesticides and their risk profile were comprehensively reviewed. This paper discusses in detail the research progress of remedial technologies from four aspects: physical, chemical, biological and synergistic remedial techniques. By analyzing different remedial strategies, advanced oxidation process (AOP) showed advantages in the aspect of low energy consumption, rapid start-up and shutdown abilities, and low requirement for pretreatment of soil. It became clear that effective remedial approach also relies on the combinations and synergies among multiple technologies. Lastly, selection criteria for suitable soil remedial technologies were presented.

Abstract:The radioactive contamination has been reported frequently from agricultural lands and ground water. The main reason behind the radioactive pollution is unprotected mining of radioactive elements, unsafe discard of nuclear industrial waste, military applications, dumping of medically used radioisotopes, globally situated (>400) nuclear power plants and use of phosphate fertilizers in farming. Radionuclides are well known potent carcinogens that may cause the various types of cancers to human and animals due to the long exposure to radioactive contaminated sites. To get rid of from the radioactive pollution there is a need of practically successful and cost effective bioremediation technologies that should able to decontaminate the effected lands and water to benefit the mankind. Microbial and phytoremediation are well studied methods for decreasing or gradually eliminating the radioactive contaminants. In this review, we discussed the different strategies of microbial and phytoremediation of radionuclides and recent advancements, that can play the major role in bioremediation of soil and water.
Technologies for the cobalt-contaminated soil remediation: A review

Abstract:The cobalt-contaminated soil has exposed potential toxicity to humans, plants, and animals. Industrial activities like ore smelting, alloy manufacture, and electric and electronic devices production have induced the increased cobalt content in soil resulting in higher ecosystem risk in diverse environmental media. However, knowledge gaps in cobalt transfer in soil and the limited understanding of remediation techniques make it challenging to estimate their potential application scenarios. Thus, keeping in view the above facts, this paper summarizes the natural and anthropogenic sources arousing the increase of cobalt in soil and reviews the cobalt species in soil and factors that influence the mobilization of cobalt. Moreover, the status of the remediation technologies is critically evaluated, including phytoremediation, immobilization, and separation technologies (soil washing and electroremediation) with a focus on the application and mechanism of phytoremediation and immobilization. Based on the actual application, further improvements and prospects of all techniques are proposed. This comprehensive review might serve to guide technique selection and inspire more scientific exploration on the remediation of cobalt-contaminated soil.

Abstract:With the wide application of nuclear energy, the problem of radioactive pollution has attracted worldwide attention, and the research on the treatment of radioactive wastewater is imminent. How to treat radioactive wastewater deeply and efficiently has become the most critical issue in the development of nuclear energy technology. The radioactive wastewater produced after using nuclear technology has the characteristics of many kinds, high concentration, and large quantity. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the treatment technology of radioactive wastewater in reprocessing plants. The process flow and waste liquid types of the post−treatment plant are reviewed. The commonly used evaporation concentration, adsorption, precipitation, ion exchange, biotechnology, membrane separation, and photocatalysis are summarized. The basic principles and technological characteristics of them are introduced. The advantages and disadvantages of different single and combined processes are compared, and the development trend of future processing technology is prospected.
