Abstract:Modern interfacial science is increasingly multi-disciplinary. Unique insight into interfacial interactions requires new multimodal techniques for interrogating surfaces with simultaneous complementary physical and chemical measurements. We describe here the design and testing of a microscope that incorporates a miniature Surface Forces Apparatus ({\mu}SFA) in sphere vs. flat mode for force-distance measurements, while simultaneously acquiring Raman spectra of the confined zone. The microscope uses a simple optical setup that isolates independent optical paths for (i) the illumination and imaging of Newton's Rings and (ii) Raman-mode excitation and efficient signal collection. We benchmark the methodology by examining Teflon thin films in asymmetric (Teflon-water-glass) and symmetric (Teflon-water-Teflon) configurations. Water is observed near the Teflon-glass interface with nanometer-scale sensitivity in both the distance and Raman signals. We perform chemically-resolved, label-free imaging of confined contact regions between Teflon and glass surfaces immersed in water. Remarkably, we estimate that the combined approach enables vibrational spectroscopy with single water monolayer sensitivity within minutes. Altogether, the Raman-{\mu}SFA allows exploration of molecular confinement between surfaces with chemical selectivity and correlation with interaction forces.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a widely used characterization technique for studying chemical compositions and light-matter interactions in the infrared range. However, it remains challenging to use conventional FTIR equipment to characterize materials that are environmentally sensitive and/or have rough surfaces due to their dynamic response to external stimuli (e.g., humidity) and light scattering from the sample surface. Here, we describe an approach enabling quantitative infrared spectroscopy measurements of these challenging samples, including transmittance, reflectance, and emissivity. We designed and 3D-printed a miniaturized environmental chamber that can be directly inserted into the sample holder of a conventional integrating sphere to perform total transmission and reflection measurements in controlled environments. Moreover, a calibration method was developed to exclude light scattering from rough surfaces of the sample and the distortion created by infrared windows. To illustrate the potential application of this method, we have performed quantitative infrared measurements, both specular and diffusive, on a sapphire standard reference with a specular surface, as well as a textile sample that has a rough surface and is dynamically responsive to changes in humidity. The calibrated results measured with the equipped chamber match those measured without the IR windows, demonstrating the viability of our environmental chamber and the proposed calibration method. This quantitative infrared spectroscopy measurement technique may help advance fields such as metasurfaces and adaptive textiles, where samples are often rough, dynamically responsive, and/or environmentally sensitive.
Vibrational sum frequency scattering in absorptive media: A theoretical case study of nano-objects water

Abstract:The structures of interfaces of nano- and microscale objects in aqueous solution are important for a wide variety of physical, chemical and biological processes. Vibrational sum frequency scattering has emerged as a useful and unique probe of the interfacial structure of nano- and microscale objects in water. However, the full surface vibrational stretch mode spectrum has not been measured yet, even though it would be extremely informative to do so. The reason for this is that probing the vibrational modes of interfacial water requires a full understanding of how the linear absorptive properties of the bulk aqueous medium influence the sum frequency scattering process. Here, we have simulated vibrational sum frequency scattering spectra of the interface of nanoscale objects dispersed in water. We analyzed the effect of the infrared pulse absorption on the outcome of surface vibrational sum frequency scattering measurements. We find that both infrared absorption as well as the type of optical detection can drastically modify the measured vibrational interfacial spectrum. The observed changes comprise spectral distortion, frequency shifting of the main vibrational stretch mode and the introducing of a new high frequency peak. This last feature is enhanced by non-resonant interactions.

Ultrahigh Resolution Spectroscopy Across the Visible to Infrared Spectrum Using Multi-Mode Interference in a Compact Tapered Fiber

Abstract:Optical spectroscopy is a fundamental tool in numerous areas of science and technology. Much effort has focused on miniaturizing spectrometers, but thus far at the cost of high spectral resolution and broad operating range. Here, we describe a compact spectrometer without this trade-off. The device relies on imaging multi-mode interference from leaky modes along a highly multimode tapered optical fiber, resulting in spectrally distinguishable images that form a basis for reconstructing an incident light spectrum. This tapered fiber multimode interference spectrometer enables the acquisition of broadband spectra in a single camera exposure with a measured resolution of 40 pm in the visible spectrum and 10 pm in the infrared spectrum, which are comparable to the performance of grating spectrometers. Spectroscopy from 500 nm to 1600 nm is demonstrated, though operation across the entire transparency window of silica fibers is possible. Multimode interference spectroscopy of leaky modes is suitable in a variety of device geometries, including planar waveguides in a broad range of transparent materials. We anticipate that this technique will greatly expand the availability of high-performance spectroscopy in a wide range of applications.

Diffraction-limited hyperspectral mid-infrared single-pixel microscopy

Abstract:In this contribution, we demonstrate a wide-field hyperspectral mid-infrared (MIR) microscope based on multidimensional single-pixel imaging (SPI). The microscope employs a high brightness MIR supercontinuum source for broadband (1.55 [Formula: see text]-4.5 [Formula: see text]) sample illumination. Hyperspectral imaging capability is achieved by a single micro-opto-electro-mechanical digital micromirror device (DMD), which provides both spatial and spectral differentiation. For that purpose the operational spectral bandwidth of the DMD was significantly extended into the MIR spectral region. In the presented design, the DMD fulfills two essential tasks. On the one hand, as standard for the SPI approach, the DMD sequentially masks captured scenes enabling diffraction-limited imaging in the tens of millisecond time-regime. On the other hand, the diffraction at the micromirrors leads to dispersion of the projected field and thus allows for wavelength selection without the application of additional dispersive optical elements, such as gratings or prisms. In the experimental part, first of all, the imaging and spectral capabilities of the hyperspectral microscope are characterized. The spatial and spectral resolution is assessed by means of test targets and linear variable filters, respectively. At a wavelength of 4.15 [Formula: see text] a spatial resolution of 4.92 [Formula: see text] is achieved with a native spectral resolution better than 118.1 nm. Further, a post-processing method for drastic enhancement of the spectral resolution is proposed and discussed. The performance of the MIR hyperspectral microsopce is demonstrated for label-free chemical imaging and examination of polymer compounds and red blood cells. The acquisition and reconstruction of Hadamard sampled 64 [Formula: see text] 64 images is achieved in 450 ms and 162 ms, respectively. Thus, combined with an unprecedented intrinsic flexibiliy gained by a tunable field of view and adjustable spatial resolution, the demonstrated design drastically improves the sample throughput in MIR chemical and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a powerful analytical method for not only the chemical identification of solid, liquid, and gas species, but also the quantification of their concentration. However, the chemical quantification capability of FTIR is significantly hindered when the analyte is surrounded by a strong IR absorbing medium, such as liquid solutions. To overcome this limit, here we develop an IR fiber microprobe that can be inserted into liquid medium, and obtain full FTIR spectra at points of interest. To benchmark this endoscopic FTIR method, we insert the microprobe into bulk water covering a ZnSe substrate and measure the IR transmittance of water as a function of the probe-substrate distance. The obtained vibrational modes, overall transmittance vs z profiles, quantitative absorption coefficients, and micro z-section IR transmittance spectra are all consistent with the standard IR absorption properties of water. The results pave the way for endoscopic chemical profiling inside bulk liquid solutions, promising for applications in many biological, chemical, and electrochemical systems.

Abstract:Mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy is widely recognized as a powerful, non-distractive method for chemical analysis. However, its utility is constrained by a micrometer-scale spatial resolution imposed by the long-wavelength MIR diffraction limit. This limitation has been recently overcome by MIR photothermal (MIP) imaging, which detects photothermal effects induced in the vicinity of MIR absorbers using a visible-light microscope. Despite its promise, the full potential of its spatial resolving power has not been realized. Here, we present an optimal implementation of wide-field MIP imaging to achieve high spatial resolution. This is accomplished by employing single-objective synthetic-aperture quantitative phase imaging (SOSA-QPI) with synchronized sub-nanosecond MIR and visible light sources, effectively suppressing the resolution-degradation effect caused by photothermal heat diffusion. We demonstrate far-field MIR spectroscopic imaging with a spatial resolution limited by the visible diffraction, down to 125 nm, in the MIR region of 3.12-3.85 um (2,600-3,200 cm-1). This technique, through the use of a shorter visible wavelength and/or a higher objective numerical aperture, holds the potential to achieve a spatial resolution of less than 100 nm, thus paving the way for MIR wide-field nanoscopy.

Abstract:Abstract A long sought objective of MEMS research within the oil & gas industry has been the realization of “FT-IR on a chip,” which could hold the potential to migrate laboratory grade chemical spectroscopy into downhole sensor suites. A fundamental obstacle to this research has been the cooling demands of conventional technologies which conflict with the miniaturized sensor volumes required in downhole logging systems and environmental conditions that routinely exceed 125 • C. Near centimeter scale spectroscopic devices are required by a majority of downhole sensor suites, which stands in stark contrast to multiple-decimeter size conventional devices. Here we report a near-centimeter scale FT-MIR ATR spectrometer compatible with downhole volumetric and temperature constraints. The spectrometer is based upon a high-temperature broadband mid-infrared metasurface detector/source combination derived from a geometric inversion of a set of conformal mapping contours. The metasurface elemental structure is derived from a geometric inversion of the canonical TanCirc conformal mapping contours and was found to exhibit a near zero index metamaterial (NZIM) behavior over a spectral range of interest for downhole chemical spectroscopy. The NZIM properties of the metasurface lead to an absorption phenomenon characterized by surface plasmon resonances which confine the absorption mechanism within the ultrathin (λ /300) metasurface plane and make the absorption properties of the microbolometer design relatively insensitive to the material properties of the remaining laminae. This unusual feature allows the metasurface to be integrated on a single VO 2 material thermometric layer and operated at elevated downhole temperatures despite corresponding to the VO2 metal-insulator-transition (MIT) region. Within this transition region however the VO2 layer exhibits a substantially beneficial property in that the VO 2 layer exhibits more than an order of magnitude enhancement in its ambient thermometric properties, leading to an uncooled microbolometer design with predicted maximum detectivity D * = 1.5 × 10 10 cm √ Hz/W and noise equivalent difference temperature NEDT of 1 mK at a modulation frequency of 500 Hz. A sub-millimeter scale thermal infrared source with intrinsic mid-infrared band-limited emission is formed from the same cellular geometric building block, enabling the spectrometer miniaturization. These performance parameters compare well with lower tier laboratory grade FT-MIR spectroscopic instruments and could represent a significant step in the effort towards deploying miniaturized high-temperature mid-infrared spectroscopy into oilfield downhole logging applications.

Abstract:We introduce a scattering-type scanning near-field infrared microscope (s-SNIM) for the local scale near- field sample analysis and spectroscopy from room (RT) down to liquid helium (LHe) temperatures. The extension of s-SNIM down to T = 5K is in particular crucial for low-temperature phase transitions, e.g. for the examination of superconductors, as well as low energy excitations. The LT s-SNIM performance is tested with CO2-IR excitation at T = 7K using a bare Au reference and a structured Si/SiO$_2$-sample. Furthermore, we quantify the impact of local laser heating under the s-SNIM tip apex by monitoring the light-induced ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition of the skyrmion-hosting multiferroic material GaV4S8 at T$_c$ = 42K. We apply LT s-SNIM to study the spectral response of GaV$_4$S$_8$ and its lateral domain structure in the ferroelectric phase by the mid-IR to THz free-electron laser-light source FELBE at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, Germany. Notably, our s-SNIM is based on a non-contact atomic force microscope(AFM), and thus can be complemented in-situ by various other AFM techniques, such as topography profiling, piezo-response force microscopy (PFM) and/or Kelvin-probe force microscopy (KPFM). The combination of these methods support the comprehensive study of the mutual interplay in the topographic, electronic and optical properties of surfaces from room temperature down to 5K.

Ultrafast energy-dispersive soft-x-ray diffraction in the water window with a laser-driven source

Abstract:Time-resolved soft-x-ray-diffraction experiments give access to microscopic processes in a broad range of solid-state materials by probing ultrafast dynamics of ordering phenomena. While laboratory-based high-harmonic generation (HHG) light sources provide the required photon energies, their limited photon flux is distributed over a wide spectral range, rendering typical monochromatic diffraction schemes challenging. Here, we present a scheme for energy-dispersive soft-x-ray diffraction with femtosecond temporal resolution and photon energies across the water window from 200 to 600 eV. The experiment utilizes the broadband nature of the HHG emission to efficiently probe large slices in reciprocal space. As a proof-of-concept, we study the laser-induced structural dynamics of a Mo/Si superlattice in an ultrafast, non-resonant soft-x-ray diffraction experiment. We extract the underlying strain dynamics from the measured shift of its first order superlattice Bragg peak in reciprocal space at photon energies around 500 eV via soft-x-ray scattering simulations.

A comparative investigation of thickness measurements of ultra-thin water films by scanning probe techniques

Abstract:The reliable operation of micro and nanomechanical devices necessitates a thorough knowledge of the water film thickness present on the surfaces of these devices with an accuracy in the nm range. In this work, the thickness of an ultra-thin water layer was measured by distance tunnelling spectroscopy and distance dynamic force spectroscopy during desorption in an ultra-high vacuum system, from about 2.5 nm up to complete desorption at 1E-8 mbar. The tunnelling current as well as the amplitude of vibration and the normal force were detected as a function of the probe-sample distance. In these experiments, a direct conversion of the results of both methods is possible. From the standpoint of surface science, taking the state-of-the-art concerning adsorbates on surfaces into consideration, dynamic force spectroscopy provides the most accurate values. The previously reported tunnelling spectroscopy, requiring the application of significantly high voltages, generally leads to values that are 25 times higher than values determined by dynamic force spectroscopy.

Abstract:Infrared (IR) spectroscopy provides detailed structural and dynamical information on clusters at the fingerprint level. Herein, we demonstrate the capability of a tunable vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser (VUV-FEL) for selective detection of a wide variety of neutral water clusters and for recording the size-dependent IR spectra. The present technique does not require the presence of an ultraviolet chromophore or a dipole moment and is generally applicable for IR spectroscopy of neutral clusters free from confinement. To show the features of our technique, we report here the IR spectra of neutral water dimer in the OH stretch region, providing benchmarks for theoretical study of the accurate description of hydrogen bonding structures involved in liquid water and ice. Quantum mechanical calculations on a 12-dimensional ab initio potential energy surface are utilized to simulate the anharmonic vibrational spectra of water dimer. These results help to resolve the controversy of the exact vibrational assignment of each band feature of the water dimer.

Abstract:Infrared (IR) multiple-angle incidence resolution spectrometry (IR-MAIRS) is a recently developed spectroscopic technique that combines oblique incidence transmission measurements and chemometrics (multivariate analysis) to obtain both pure in-plane (IP) and out-of-plane (OP) vibration spectra for a thin sample. IR-MAIRS is established for analyzing the molecular orientation of organic thin films at atmospheric pressure, but it should also be powerful for the structural characterization of vapor-deposited thin samples prepared in a vacuum. The application of IR-MAIRS to vapor-deposited amorphous water is particularly interesting in the fields of physical and interstellar chemistry, because it is a representative model material for interstellar icy dust grains. We recently developed an experimental setup for in situ IR-MAIRS under low-temperature, ultra-high-vacuum conditions, which thus facilitates measurements of interstellar ice analogues such as vapor-deposited amorphous water. This review considers the theoretical framework of IR-MAIRS and our recent experimental results for vapor-deposited amorphous water. We present spectroscopic signatures for the perpendicular orientation of dangling OH bonds for three-coordinated water molecules at the surface of amorphous water at 90 K. The absolute absorption cross-section of the three-coordinated dangling OH bonds is quantitatively measured. As IR-MAIRS can essentially be conducted using only a Fourier-transform IR spectrometer and an angle-controllable linear polarizer, it is a useful, low-cost, and simple spectroscopic technique for studying laboratory analogues of interstellar ices including vapor-deposited amorphous water.
All-mirror wavefront division interferometer for mid-infrared spectrometry

Abstract:In this contribution, we address the core of any Fourier transform (FT) spectrometer$\unicode{x2013}$the interferometer$\unicode{x2013}$in perspective of the recent emergence of spatially coherent broadband infrared (IR) sources. As a result, we report on the design of a wavefront-division interferometer for spectroscopic applications in the mid-IR and beyond. The theoretical framework of the proposed wavefront division interferometer is discussed, and an analytical solution to determine the far-field interference pattern is derived. The solution is verified by both optical propagation simulations and experimentally. In view of the practical significance, we apply the wavefront division interferometer for FTIR spectroscopy. It features a simple architecture, ultra-broad achromaticity (limited only by the spectral profiles of the mirrors), high optical throughput, variable arms split ratio, and a two-fold increase in scan length and spectral resolution (demonstrated up to 0.2 $cm^{-1}$), respectively. Further, the employed design inherently enables the measurement of the complex refractive index. Experimental verification of the mentioned properties is provided by coupling the spectrometer with a mid-IR supercontinuum source for various applied spectroscopic studies: high-resolution transmission measurements of polymers (polypropylene) and gas (methane), as well as reflectance measurements of dried pharmaceuticals (insulin products on a metal surface).

Abstract:To meet the challenges of high-resolution molecular spectroscopy, increasingly sophisticated spectroscopic techniques were developed. For a long time FTIR and laser-based spectroscopies were used for these studies. The recent development of dual-comb spectroscopy at high-resolution makes this technique a powerful tool for gas phase studies. We report on the use and characterization of the IRis-F1, a tabletop mid-infrared dual-comb spectrometer, in the newly developed step-sweep mode. The resolution of the wavenumber axis is increased by step-wise tuning (interleaving) and accurate measurement of the laser center wavelength and repetition frequency. Doppler limited measurements of N2O and CH4 reveal a wavenumber accuracy of 1E-4 cm-1 on the covered range of > 50 cm-1. Measured half-widths of absorption lines show no systematic broadening, indicating a negligible instrument response function. Finally, measurements of nitrogen pressure broadening coefficients in the v4 band of methane show that quantum cascade laser dual-comb spectroscopy in step-sweep mode is well adapted for measurements of precision spectroscopic data, in particular line shape parameters.

Femtosecond mega-electron-volt electron microdiffraction

Abstract:Instruments to visualize transient structural changes of inhomogeneous materials on the nanometer scale with atomic spatial and temporal resolution are demanded to advance materials science, bioscience, and fusion sciences. One such technique is femtosecond electron microdiffraction, in which a short pulse of electrons with femtosecond-scale duration is focused into a micron-scale spot and used to obtain diffraction images to resolve ultrafast structural dynamics over localized crystalline domain. In this letter, we report the experimental demonstration of time-resolved mega-electron-volt electron microdiffraction which achieves a 5 {\mu}m root-mean-square (rms) beam size on the sample and a 100 fs rms temporal resolution. Using pulses of 10k electrons at 4.2 MeV energy with a normalized emittance 3 nm-rad, we obtained high quality diffraction from a single 10 {\mu}m paraffin (C_44 H_90) crystal. The phonon softening mode in optical-pumped polycrystalline Bi was also time-resolved, demonstrating the temporal resolution limits of our instrument design. This new characterization capability will open many research opportunities in material and biological sciences.

Abstract:Outlined here is a technique for sub-wavelength infrared surface imaging performed using a phase matched optical parametric oscillator laser and an atomic force microscope as the detection mechanism. The technique uses a novel surface excitation illumination approach to perform simultaneously chemical mapping and AFM topography imaging with an image resolution of 200 nm. This method was demonstrated by imaging polystyrene micro-structures.

Molecular water accumulation on silica measured by land-contrast interferometry with picometer height resolution

Abstract:We observed water film accumulation on silica surfaces in the air to 2 picometer resolution using optical land-contrast (LC) interferometry. The land-contrast approach is non-destructive and allows real-time measurement of thickness variation of small molecular films on a surface. Water accumulation rates are observed to be different on bare or protein monolayer coated silica surfaces. This suggests that water contributes false signals to mass-sensitive biosensors for protein microarray.

Engineering mid-infrared nanoantennas for surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy

Abstract:Mid-infrared absorption spectroscopy is a powerful tool for optically probing the molecular structure of biological samples. However, using conventional approaches, IR measurements on small quantities of molecules are extremely challenging due to sensitivity limitations. The strong IR absorption of liquid water presents additional obstacles to performing measurements in biomolecules’ native, aqueous environments. In this review we discuss the application of engineered plasmonic nanoantennas to overcoming these challenges. We provide overviews and highlight the key concepts of our recent work in designing infrared antennas and applying them to enhance the absorption of minute quantities of biomolecules as well as new fabrication methods for their high throughput and low-cost manufacturing.

Nanometric determination of the thickness of aqueous samples for accurate molar absorption coefficients of water-soluble molecules in the mid-infrared region

Abstract:Absorption spectra of aqueous samples measured by transmission need to be acquired using very thin cells (5-50 μm) when targeting the mid-infrared (mid-IR) region, due to the strong background absorbance of liquid water. The thickness of the cell used controls the pathlength of the light through the sample, a value needed for instance to transform absorption spectra into molar absorption coefficient spectra, or to determine solute concentrations from absorption spectra. The most accurate way to determine the thickness of a thin empty cell (i.e., filled with air) is from the period of an interference pattern, known as interference fringes, that arises when the cell is placed perpendicular to the path of light in the spectrometer. However, this same approach is not directly applicable to determine the thickness of a cells filled with an aqueous solution, due partially to the smaller amplitude of the interference fringes but fundamentally caused by its complex waveform, with a wavenumber-dependent oscillation period. Here, using Fresnel equations, we derived analytical expressions to model interference fringes in absorption spectra obtained by transmission, valid also for aqueous samples. We also present a novel Fourier-based analysis of the interference fringes that, in combination with the derived analytical expressions, allowed us to determine the pathlength of aqueous samples with an error below 50 nm. We implemented this novel approach to analyze interference fringes as a Live Script running in the software Matlab. As an application, we measured absorption spectra of a 97 mM solution of MES buffer (at low and high pH) using cells of various nominal thicknesses (6, 25 and 50 μm). The molar absorption coefficient spectrum for the acidic and basic forms of MES, worked out using pathlengths values determined using the present approach, were virtually identical regardless of the nominal thickness of the cells used, indicating that the thickness determined for the cells were consistent and likely very accurate. These results illustrate the performance of the presented method to determine the pathlength of aqueous samples, as well as for its utility to obtain accurate molar absorption coefficient spectra of water-soluble molecules in the mid-IR region.
