Abstract:Environmentally friendly handling and efficient recycling of waste electrical on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) have grown to be a global social problem. As holders of WEEE, consumers have a significant effect on the recycling process. A consideration of and attention to the influence of consumer behavior in the recycling process can help achieve more effective recycling of WEEE. In this paper, we built a dual-channel closed-loop supply chain model composed of manufacturers, retailers, and network recycling platforms. Based on the influence of customer bargaining behavior, we studied several different scenarios of centralized decision-making, decentralized decision-making, and contract coordination, using the Stackelberg game theory. The results show that retailers and network recycling platforms will reduce the direct recovery prices to maintain their own profit when considering the impact of consumer bargaining behavior, while remanufacturers will improve the transfer payment price for surrendering part of the profit under revenue and the expense sharing contract. Using this contract, we can achieve supply chain coordination and eliminate the effect of consumer bargaining behavior on supply chain performance. It can be viewed from the parameter sensitivity analysis that when we select the appropriate sharing coefficient, the closed-loop supply chain can achieve the same system performance under a centralized decision.

Abstract:Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) reverse logistics management has increasingly received much attention in recent years not only because of the fast increase of WEEE but also the legislations in many developed countries. This paper focuses on the treatment and recycling system, and proposes a two-stage multi-objective decision framework. In the treatment stage, the responsible producer selects treatment suppliers under extended producer responsibility by a pre-emptive goal programming model. After the wastes are depolluted and transformed to recyclable materials, the process enters the recycling stage in which the decision-maker plans the reclaimed material production by a linear programming model for profit maximisation. An illustrative case study is presented, and the sensitivity analyses show that the ranking of suppliers is more stable than the quantities allocated to suppliers under different priority structures, so ranking of suppliers should also be given attention in such multi-objective decision-making. In addition, a decision model with environmental constraints can reduce the production of the products that have more environmental impacts.

Abstract:Global warming and e-waste pollution are two major environmental pollution issues that have attracted widespread attention. The government has adopted various measures to reduce carbon emissions from businesses and to make manufacturers responsible for recycling e-waste. In the face of external pressures, more and more companies are implementing sustainable closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) management to reduce environmental pollution and achieve sustainable development. Therefore, it is essential to study the operational decisions of CLSC enterprises. This paper considers a sustainable CLSC consisting of two competing manufacturers and a dominant retailer. The government imposes a carbon tax on the retailer, and two manufacturers collect used products directly from their customers. We separately examine whether implementing green marketing by the retailer and the collaboration between the two manufacturers can improve their profits. By building decentralized CLSC mathematical models and applying game theory methods, we obtain that green marketing can increase profits for all CLSC members and improve return rates. The collaboration may yield higher total profits for two manufacturers than a decentralized solution, while the retailer's profits may be lost under certain conditions. Finally, we perform several numerical analyses to find the relationship between unit carbon emission tax and social welfare and gain some managerial insights. The study gives key factors that CLSC companies should consider when making decisions to help them achieve sustainability and provides recommendations for the government to set a reasonable unit carbon tax.

Abstract:This study investigates the effect of social preference on the recycling decision and coordination in an E-closed-loop supply chain (E-CLSC). Firstly, we set the dynamic E-CLSC game model including a manufacturer, an E-commerce platform (E-platform) and a recycler, where the manufacturer dominates the supply chain and both the E-platform and the recycler are followers. Secondly, we propose an E-CLSC information structure to depict four symmetry and asymmetry cases about the E-platform's fairness concern and the manufacturer's altruistic reciprocity, and the backward induction method is adopted to solve the equilibrium in each case. By comparative analysis, we propose a revenue-sharing and cost-sharing contract to optimize recycling decisions, coordinate the E-CLSC and Pareto-improve all parties' profits. We show that whether information is symmetrical or not, only the wholesale price contract cannot coordinate the E-CLSC, whereas the revenue-sharing and cost-sharing contract can always achieve optimal recycling decisions, coordinate the supply chain and Pareto-improve all parties' profits with a constant cost sharing ratio. In addition, the E-platform's fairness concern can widen the range of the revenue sharing ratio and make it easier to coordinate the E-CLSC, but the manufacturer's altruistic reciprocity may narrow the range of the revenue sharing ratio and make it harder to coordinate the E-CLSC.

Abstract:The massive emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases has begun to threaten the survival of human beings and the balance of the Earth's ecology. If carbon emission is left unchecked, we will face terrible consequences. Closed-loop supply chain operation is an effective way to improve economic and environmental benefits at the same time. This paper attempts to study the decision-making and recycling channel selection of CLSC under carbon allowance and carbon trading policies. This paper constructs a closed-loop supply chain consisting of a manufacturer, a retailer and a third-party recycler, and uses the Stackelberg game-theoretic method to decide variables such as the product price and recycling rate of CLSC under three recycling models. Through the analysis and comparison of the manufacturer's profit of and the carbon emissions in different models, the following conclusions are drawn. (1) When the manufacturer recycles WEEE, the supply chain obtains the most profit. (2) When the retailer recycles WEEE, the carbon emissions of the supply chain are lowest. (3) The manufacturer tends to choose the M model, which is the manufacturer recycling model. The T model and the R model have little difference in carbon emissions. For easier management, the government prefers to choose the T model, which is the third-party recycler recycling model.

Abstract:A Stackelberg game model was formulated for dual recycling channels for a supply chain with a recycler and an e-tailer, who recycle and resell waste electronics. A reverse solution was adopted to find the optimal recycling prices, the optimal selling prices, and the supply chain's overall profits for cooperative and non-cooperative models. The profits gained in the cooperative model were greater. We proposed a revenue-sharing contract to investigate the profit distribution. Finally, we validated the effectiveness of the cooperative recycling model through numerical simulations, calculated the revenue-sharing factors, and analyzed the effects of these factors on the decisions of the recycler and the e-tailer. By comparing the dual-channel non-cooperative recycling model based on online and offline recycling by the recycler to the dual-channel cooperative recycling model based on offline recycling by the recycler and online recycling by the e-tailer, as well as examining the results in relation to the contracts, we found that the recycler and the e-tailer should cooperate in recycling electronics to maximize the supply chain's overall profits. However, the e-tailer will see reduced profits and may be less willing to cooperate, so it is necessary to formulate a revenue-sharing contract. The revenue-sharing factors in the contract must be set within a reasonable range; otherwise, either party could see reduced profits and renounce cooperation, even if the supply chain's overall profit is maximized. The recycler is the more critical party for achieving cooperation. In this paper, we research the cooperative strategy between recyclers and e-tailers that is conducive for expanding the market scale of waste electronics recycling and improving the profits of both parties, while promoting the sustainable development of the supply chain.

Abstract:Recycling waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has garnered considerable societal attention. To incentivize WEEE recycling within a closed-loop supply chain (CLSC), a deposit-refund system (DRS) has been implemented. This study delves into the implications of a market-driven DRS on WEEE recycling under different recycling models. A Stackelberg game analysis is employed, where an electronics manufacturer (leader) has sufficient channel power over an electronics retailer and a third-party recycler (followers). The results indicate that the market-driven DRS significantly incentivizes consumer recycling efforts, ultimately elevating the economic efficiency of the supply chain. When the electronics manufacturer assumes responsibility for WEEE recycling, it streamlines the recycling process, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and profitability. Conversely, when the electronics retailer handles WEEE recycling, it reduces retail prices and simplifies the recycling process, positively influencing consumer purchasing behavior. However, when a third-party recycler undertakes WEEE recycling, the recycling volume tends to be minimal, resulting in the lowest level of supply chain profits. This paper provides theoretical and practical implications for improving the recycling effectiveness and operational efficiency of the CLSC.

Abstract:This paper investigates a closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) of WEEE consisting of a manufacturer, a retailer and a third party recycler, where the manufacturer can remanufacture used WEEE products or the manufacturer also can authorize the retailer to remanufacture used WEEE products. Combining the remanufacturing mode and government fund policy, four dynamic game models are found to analyze the effect of government fund policy on decisions of CLSC. In addtion, this study investigate the effect of government fund policy on consumer, environment and society using numerical analysis. The results show that: Without government fund policy, the manufacturer remanufacturing mode is better for CLSC members. By contrast, under the government fund policy, the retailer remanufacturing mode is the best choice. When government fund policy parameters meet a certain range, it can increase supply chain members’ profits and promote the recycling and remanufacturing of used WEEE products. The changing trends of supply chain members, consumer surplus, environmental impact and social welfare are the same, only the change thresholds of government fund policy parameters are quite different. When the government sets appropriate fund policy parameters, government fund policy is benefit for supply chain members, consumer, environment and society.

Abstract:In the closed-loop supply chain, many suppliers opt for self-recycling or entrust retailers to recycle. Under both recycling channels, the member responsible for recycling can undertake or outsource logistics services. This paper investigates how consumers’ environmental awareness and recycling cost-saving affect the optimal combination of recycling channel and logistics-service strategy. To this end, we mathematically formulate the supplier-led Stackelberg game theoretical-framework, and apply the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker conditions for constrained optimization. We examine the optimal combination under the impact of consumers’ environmental awareness and recycling cost-saving on profits, environmental impact and social welfare, using numerical analysis. Results demonstrate that as consumers’ environmental awareness and recycling cost-saving remain at a higher level, the supplier and retailer will both achieve maximum profits when the supplier entrusts the retailer to recycle and the retailer undertakes the logistics services. Meanwhile, the third party will choose to be entrusted with services by the supplier, rather than the retailer. To improve supply-chain performance, the retailer should assume social responsibility to recycle and build the logistics-service system.

Abstract:The pricing strategies of the reverse supply chain system of electronic waste (e-waste) consisted of recyclers and processors are proposed. The trapezoidal fuzzy membership functions are used to describe the uncertainty of the recycling price. The amount of recycling e-waste, the recycling price and the profits of recyclers and processors in cooperation and non-cooperation game decisions are presented. The simulated results show that the cooperation, the elasticity coefficients of price, the remanufactured rate, the recycling cost, the re-manufacturing cost and the government subsidy for non-recycled e-waste will affect the recycling price, the amount of recycling e-waste and the profits of recyclers and processors directly. The results in this paper can provide good guidance and reference for the operation of the e-waste reverse supply chain system.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the influences of vertical and horizontal cooperation models on the optimal decisions and performance of a low-carbon closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) with a manufacturer and two retailers, and study optimal operation in the competitive pricing, competitive the low-carbon promotion, the carbon emission reduction, the used-products collection and the profits. We consider the completely decentralized model, M-R vertical cooperation model, R-R horizontal cooperation model, M-R-R vertical and horizontal cooperation model and completely centralized model, and also identify the optimal decision results and profits. It can be observed from a systematic comparison and numerical analysis that the completely centralized model is best in all optimal decision results among all models. In semi-cooperation, the M-R vertical cooperation model is positive, the R-R horizontal cooperation model is passive, and the positivity of the M-R-R vertical and horizontal cooperation model decreases with competitive intensity increasing in the used-products returning, carbon emissions reduction level, low-carbon promotion effort and the profits of the manufacturer and the entire supply chain.

Abstract:Today, with the number of waste power batteries and consumers' awareness of low-carbon both increasing, a new closed-loop supply chain model in which the node enterprises of reverse supply chains are being constructed. These are responsible for the recycling, echelon utilization and low-carbon innovation of waste power batteries. This provides a new way for the development of reverse supply chain node enterprises and lays a theoretical foundation. In this paper, we use the backward solution method to solve the Nash equilibrium solution of the Stackelberg game. Through numerical calculation and simulation, the decision variables, profit and income of the supply chain are analyzed and the equilibrium results are compared. The experimental results indicate that the implementation of low-carbon innovative production by cascaded utilization enterprises is conducive to the growth of their profits with lower cost inputs. The impact of the initial waste power battery recycling rate on the decision variables is negative, while, for the supply chain as a whole, the profit growth of the node companies can be positive and the location of the inflection point appears to be particularly important. The sensitivity coefficient of low-carbonization levels has a positive regulatory effect on decision variables and location of all parties. The closed-loop supply chain model proposed in this study promotes the overall development of a power battery closed-loop supply chain, and also provides theoretical guidance for reasonable pricing decisions of node enterprises under the new model. Based on the results of this paper, the government can implement incentives such as subsidies, or formulate reasonable policies for the development of a power battery closed-loop supply chain.

Abstract:With increasing carbon emissions and relatively unfavorable climate changes, all circles of society, including consumers, governments and enterprises, are paying more attention to low-carbon production. In this study, we consider a two-echelon supply chain consisting of one manufacturer and one supplier that try to increase sustainable profits by making efforts on CO2 emission reduction in three progressive environment regulation situations using a Stackelberg differential game: (1) the market-based situation in which consumers' environmental awareness is mainly considered, (2) the government-based situation in which government intervention effect is mainly considered, and (3) the supply chain based situation in which the channel coordination effect is mainly considered. Dynamic expressions of the optimal sales price, emission reduction efforts and cost subsidy are derived from three situations with the goal of profit maximization. The results show that the emission reduction is largest with the highest efforts of the manufacturer and supplier in the supply chain based situation. The manufacturer makes increasing emission reduction efforts when consumers' environmental awareness, government intervention and channel coordination are introduced in sequence, and charges more money for low-carbon products according to the amount of emission reduction. The supplier makes more efforts only when channel coordination is introduced. Governmental regulation aimed at the final products and downstream enterprises cannot function effectively; a cost-sharing contract in the supply chain is needed to motivate the supplier to make greater emission reduction efforts. The simulations and sensitivity analyses are given to verify the effectiveness of the conclusions. Our study provides theoretical support for dynamic low-carbon production in the supply chain with environmental regulations from the market, government and operation.

Abstract:Under carbon cap-and-trade regulation, to control carbon emissions and improve the recycling efficiency of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) from the traditional offline recycling channel, more enterprises attempt to simultaneously combine the online recycling platform with the digital transformation of the supply chain. Based on a closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) with dual recycling channels and considering recycling advertising invested both in offline and online recycling channels, this paper attempts to explore the optimal recycling advertising mode which can both achieve economic and environmental performance under cap-and-trade regulation. Therefore, game models including a manufacturer and above either recycler are established, which are respectively correspond to four recycling advertising scenarios: manufacturer cooperates with neither recycler (MO mode), manufacturer only cooperates with the offline retailer (MR mode), manufacturer only cooperates with the online recycling platform (MT mode), and manufacturer cooperates with either recycler (MRT mode). Consequently, this paper solves the optimal decisions of the tripartite and focuses on the analysis of the impact of cooperative (competitive) recycling advertising under cap-and-trade regulation. By comparing the profits and total carbon emissions of the whole CLSC under four recycling advertising modes, the results indicate that: cooperative advertising between the manufacturer and two recyclers can achieve economic and environmental performance for the whole CLSC if the free-riding phenomenon occurs in recycling advertising. Otherwise, influenced by competitive recycling advertising, the above mode turns to the suboptimal one for the profits of two recyclers and the total carbon emissions of the CLSC. Moreover, driven by economic benefits, cooperative advertising will eventually become a consensus, but the total carbon emissions may not always be the least.

Abstract:With the rapid development of internet technology, consumers have increasingly higher requirements for product quality. High-quality products can win consumers' trust. Enhancing both product quality and sales in e-commerce platform transactions has long been a focal point of research. To address this issue, this paper constructs Stackelberg game models under different power structures and compares their impacts on pricing decisions and profits within e-commerce supply chains. Numerical simulations are used to explore the optimal combination strategy for the interaction of product quality and marketing efforts in the e-commerce supply chain. The results show that: (1) Under a centralized decision-making model, product quality and marketing efforts reach their optimal values, maximizing benefits for the supply chain system. (2) Under different power structures, the relationship between the profits of the supplier and the e-commerce platform self-operator is closely linked to the cost coefficients of product quality and marketing efforts. (3) Through the mechanism of "cost-sharing + compensation contract", the supplier can reduce wholesale price, and the e-commerce platform self-operator can subsidize a portion of the sales to the supplier, thereby maximizing the profits of both parties and achieving a win–win situation. The research in this paper aids suppliers in improving product quality and e-commerce platform self-operators in enhancing their marketing efforts, providing theoretical support for optimizing supply-chain decision making on e-commerce platforms.

Abstract:More low-carbon products help fight climate change and environmental problems. Governments consider encouraging the manufacturer’s initiative of producing low-carbon products by providing subsidies. However, when the manufacturer sells low-carbon products through the e-commerce platform, fairness concerns arise because of the profit difference. So, this paper builds game models to study decision behavior in the low-carbon e-commerce supply chain when the manufacturer receives government carbon subsidies and has fairness concerns. Our findings show that consumers’ preference for low-carbon products will be conducive to the operation of the supply chain. So it is necessary to popularize low-carbon products. The effect of government subsidies on supply chain decisions is different from fairness concerns. Government subsidies are positive factors in the supply chain operation, which can stimulate the manufacturer to make low-carbon products as expected and choose the high quality-high price development mode. This will help improve the profit of enterprises in the supply chain but cannot effectively stimulate the e-commerce platform to increase its service level. By contrast, the manufacturer’s fairness concerns are negative factors, which make the manufacturer prefer to adopt a low quality-low price development mode to improve their utility. This offsets the positive effect of government subsidies. It turns out that the profit of both node enterprises and the supply chain system has declined. But, fairness concerns are an important way to express the manufacturer’s demand. Finally, the joint allocation contract of cost and profit designed by comprehensively considering the effect of government subsidies and fairness concerns can make the supply chain coordinated. However, even as positive factors, only within a specific range do government subsidies help coordinate the supply chain, but not the more, the better.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the influences of different game structures on the optimal decisions and performance of a low-carbon closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) with price and carbon emission level dependent market demands. We consider centralized and decentralized game theoretic models and develop two coordination mechanisms of a low-carbon CLSC with one manufacturer and one retailer. We also identify the optimal decisions of the collection level, carbon emission reduction level, and pricing under different situations, namely centralized decision, manufacturer-led, retailer-led, and Vertical Nash. It can be observed from a systematic comparison and numerical analysis that the Vertical Nash structure is the best in the levels of the carbon emission reduction, the used-product collection, the retail price, and the entire supply chain's profit under the decentralized decision. The cooperatively reducing carbon emission is positive for the carbon emission reduction and collection under a manufacturer-led structure.

Abstract:As consumers' green awareness continues to grow, the level of a product's eco-friendliness and the quality of its marketing have become significant factors in shaping consumers' purchasing decisions. The power structures within the supply chain, as well as corresponding government subsidy policies, are also key elements influencing sustainable strategies for the green supply chain. In a green supply chain comprising one manufacturer and one e-commerce platform, two sales models exist within the online e-commerce platforms: reselling and agency selling. This paper establishes and analyzes three distinct Stackelberg game models, namely: manufacturer-led model without subsidy (bm), manufacturer-led model with subsidy (sm), and platform-led model with subsidy (sp). The results are shown as follows, with the rise of consumers' environmental awareness, more consumers opt for green products, inspiring the manufacturer to increase its optimal greenness and platform to enhance its optimal marketing efforts level. Notably, government subsidies provide a significant stimulus. An increase in the green technology cost coefficient leads to a decline in the manufacturer's profits across all three modes. Intriguingly, the manufacturer's profits are always highest in the sp mode. As the marketing efforts cost coefficient increases, the platform's profits decrease in the bm and sm modes. In contrast, in the sp mode, the platform's profits increase rather than a decrease. The choice of mode primarily depends on the platform's marketing efforts cost coefficient. When this coefficient exceeds a threshold, the platform chooses the sp mode. However, due to the relatively low marketing efficiency in this scenario, the manufacturer prefers the sm mode. For the government, the sp mode involves agency selling, serves as an effective mechanism to redistribute subsidies, thereby yielding the maximum social welfare benefits. Management insights are provided for the manufacturer and platform managers to make decisions about the degree of greenness and marketing efforts level, along with insights for governments to optimize subsidy policies.
Optimal operations of a closed-loop supply chain under a dual regulation

Abstract:<p>Implementations of a deposit-refund policy for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) have engendered significant economic and environmental benefits. This deposit-refund policy typically charges disposal fees (deposits) for producing new products and offers subsidies (refunds) for recycling used products. However, as the collected disposal fees are insufficient to cover disbursed recycling subsidies, the WEEE recycling industry faces increasing challenges. To address this issue, we introduce a dual regulation regime characterized by the deposit-refund policy and a minimal collection rate of used products. We establish a two-echelon closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) consisting of a brand owner and an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) under the dual regulation. We examine the impact of the dual regulation on four key aspects of the supply chain operations: the brand owner's collection strategy, the OEM's remanufacturing choice, the profits of the two members, and environmental performance. We then investigate how the government optimizes the levels of the unit subsidy and disposal fee by minimizing the deposit-refund policy deficit. Analytical results show that the brand owner's collection strategy and the OEM's remanufacturing strategy are closely related to the dual regulation regime. When the unit disposal fee increases, both members' profits suffer. While the brand owner benefits from a rising unit subsidy, its impact on the OEM's profit is contingent upon the collection and remanufacturing strategies. A stricter minimal collection rate regulation generally hurts the two members when it is an active constraint. The deposit-refund policy's impact on the environment depends on the collection and remanufacturing strategies and the unit environmental benefit of collection. Regulating the minimal collection rate is beneficial to the environment and helps to reduce the deposit-refund policy deficit under certain conditions.</p>
