Abstract:In this paper we consider amoral taxpayers who access amoral tax preparers in order to receive help in evading taxes. Taxpayers are aware of having a biased perception of the audit probability, but are unable to correct such bias without the help of a tax preparer. The market for tax preparation, characterized by imperfect competition, is described according to the conjectural variation approach. We show that according to the direction of the bias the tax preparer can suggest either a larger or a smaller evasion with respect to the one that the taxpayer would have implemented without the advice, resulting in an evasion smaller or larger than that observed in tax reports of unbiased taxpayers. Such ambiguity provides a motivation for the ambivalent attitudes of tax administrations towards tax preparers. It also turns out that sanctions on taxpayers are more effective than sanctions on tax preparers in order to deter tax evasion.

Abstract:Speech therapy conversations between five dyads, consisting of senior speech pathology students and hearing-impaired adolescents enrolled in a Total Communication programme, were videorecorded for five weekly sessions. Samples over one-minute intervals at the start, middle, and end of the sessions were analysed for nonverbal behaviour at 3-second periods on 5-point scales covering body orientation, body position, eye gaze, facial expression, head position, and gesture/hand movement. Combination of the six resulting scores produced composite scores, which analysis of variance showed to differ significantly between dyads, sessions, intervals, and conversation partners (students versus adolescents). There were also significant interactions between dyads X sessions, dyads X partners, and sessions X partners. Examples using simple time series analysis complemented the analysis of variance by describing evidence for cyclical involvement between conversation partners.

Abstract:In the field of child psychoanalytic psychotherapy, structured competitive games such as Monopoly, UNO or football have traditionally been regarded as less conducive to deep psychodynamically oriented work. By contrast, some contemporary authors have pointed out that in middle childhood it is often precisely in play with structured games – game-play – that spontaneity and strong emotions come to the fore. These authors suggest that game-play constitutes a potentially powerful therapeutic tool for access to, and communication with, the older child's inner world. In this paper, clinical theoretical arguments are presented alongside clinical examples in support of this view and a variety of forms of game-play encountered in the analytic playroom are discussed and analysed. The paper examines how the rules and partially predetermined content of these games act as a framing structure in which the analytic work can take place safely and spontaneously, and how the model of the container ↔ contained can be usefully applied to game-play in the child therapy room. Emphasis is placed throughout on the therapeutic role of a flexible and carefully calibrated approach to the game's rules and structure and the child's cheating.

Abstract:The aim of the study was to explore the role of game-based approaches for developing speech in children with moderate mental retardation. More than 40 scientific journals, articles, and educational materials were analyzed in pedagogical and psychological fields to explore the advantages and challenges of using game-based approaches in the process of developing the speech of children with moderate mental retardation. A literature review methodology was used for collecting and synthesizing the existing scientific theoretical bases of game-based approaches for developing speech of children with moderate mental retardation since this research method created a firm foundation for advancing knowledge and facilitating theory development (Webster & Watson, 2002). The use of the literature review method helped the author learn about the history and nature of the selected topic, and identify research gaps and problems, so the results of a literature review may be presented as an entire report or article (Torracro, 2005). The current study results have shown that the effectiveness of communication skills and speech formation and development of children with moderate mental retardation was based on the approach of gradually involving children in verbal communication through play activities. As well as the specification and elaboration of the content and tools of game activities provide such pedagogical conditions, which contributed to the expansion of children's communication field, the activation of preserved opportunities, and the demand for verbal communication.

Abstract:Gifted children develop asynchronously, are often advanced for their age cognitively but at or between their chronological and mental ages socially and emotionally (Robinson, 2008). In order to help gifted children and adolescents develop and practice social and emotional self-regulation skills, we investigated the use of an Adlerian play therapy approach during pen-and-paper role-playing games. Additionally, we used Goffman’s (1961, 1974) social role identification and distance to encourage participants to experiment with new identities. Herein, we propose a psychosocial model of interactions during role-playing games based on Goffman’s theory and Adlerian play therapy techniques, and suggest that role-playing games are an effective way of intervening with gifted children and adolescents to improve their intra- and interpersonal skills. We specifically targeted intrapersonal skills of exercising creativity, becoming self-aware, and setting individual goals by raising participants’ awareness of their privately logical reasons for making decisions and their levels of social interest. We also targeted their needs and means of seeking significance in the group to promote collaboration and interaction skills with other gifted peers through role analysis, embracement, and distancing. We report results from a case study and conclude that role-playing games deserve more attention, both from researchers and clinical practitioners, because they encourage change while improving young clients’ social and emotional development.

Abstract:The critical role of specific types of mastery skill development in the treatment of sexually abused children is explored, and defense mechanisms of "invulnerable children," who function adequately despite trauma and stress, are described. The authors describe their development of structured group therapy techniques designed to foster these types of mastery skills with sexually abused children aged 6 to 8. These techniques include development of intellectualization defenses through original coloring books and therapeutic board games, cathartic exploration of feelings through structured art and storytelling exercises, cognitive relabeling and self-esteem building through role-play, "chants and cheers," homework shared with mothers, and other structured group procedures designed to develop specific coping skills.

Abstract:We describe the design process and implementation of the serious game MindSpace. MindSpace provides a playful setting for treating children with a variety of social and specific anxiety disorders. A modular approach is explained, taking a closer look on cognitive-behavioral techniques such as exposure tasks, psycho-education or coping techniques and how they are implemented within a game setting. Also, special focus is paid to the needs of our target group by putting a strong emphasis on usability and motivational factors and hence, therapy adherence.

Abstract:The aim of the presented study is to define the specifics of applying constructive principles and techniques of language game in modeling mental spaces in children's literature works. The research novelty lies in identifying the potential of language game in modeling denotative spaces of literary texts for children, particularly in creating occasional onyms and toponyms, modeling children's speech, including through the imitation of unintentional word formation in children's language. Language game is viewed not only as a means of modeling mental spaces but also as a tool to immerse a child into the system of language, introduce them to the laws of artistic texts, engage in linguistic creative activities, provoke children to engage in independent language creation, and linguistic experiments. The obtained results have shown that using language game techniques in creating mental spaces in children's literature serves both as a means of expressing the author's intention and as a method of creatively exploring children's language consciousness and mentality.

Abstract:In this study, games were prepared that will contribute to improving the vocabulary of children learning Arabic. Considering the target audience, it is known that game techniques and word teaching offer a fun and lively course environment and increase the motivation of the student. In this study, qualitative research methods were used. Document analysis technique was used in the collection of data. The findings were analyzed by the method of exponence analysis and a systematic framework was established for the study. The analysis of the documents according to the gains in the 2-8th grade Arabic curriculum prepared by the Ministry of National Education was carried out by a linguist and it was aimed to increase the reliability of the study. Three language experts were consulted for the scope validity of the games associated with the achievements and the games were rearranged in line with the incoming feedback. A total of 13 games were presented at this stage. Care has been taken to ensure that game designs are available to the entire class. In addition, it is important that the games are able to strengthen both oral and written communication. At the end of the study, it was proposed that games that can be played in open spaces such as outdoors and using technological devices can be designed in the form of dual or group work for children learning Arabic.
Social skills training with early adolescents: Effects on social skills, well-being, self-esteem and coping

Abstract:This study discusses the educational effects of a social skills training on adolescents’ social skills, self-esteem, well-being and coping. A group of 14- to 16-year-old normal adolescents followed a social skills training based on social learning principles. A pre-test — experiment — post-test design was used and the group’s performance was compared with that of a non-intervention control-group. The training was given at school, and the data were collected by means of self-report measures. The results show that the training was successful in several respects: the adolescents’ social anxiety decreased, their social activity increased, their self-esteem improved, and they made more use of adequate coping-strategies. The implications of the results for different sub-groups of adolescents are discussed. Critical attention is also given to two other issues: the type of assessment used and the short-term nature of the evaluation.

Abstract:Video games have been increasingly used as a form of therapy for various mental health conditions. Research has shown that video games can be used to treat conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addiction. One of the main benefits of video games in therapy is that they can provide a sense of engagement and immersion that traditional therapy methods may lack. Additionally, video games can teach valuable skills such as problem solving, decision making, and coping strategies. Video games can also simulate real-life scenarios, allowing individuals to practice and improve social skills in a safe and controlled environment. Furthermore, video games can provide feedback and track progress objectively and quantifiably. This paper proposes an approach, the Video Game Therapy® (VGT®) approach, where game experience is put at the center of the therapy in a tailored way, connecting the individual patient's personality, the therapy's goals, and the suggested type of video game through the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).VGT®'s core assumption is that playing video games could facilitate patients in reaching conditions where traditional methodologies and therapeutic approaches could work best. VGT® was elaborated according to the Adlerian therapy vision and, consequently, the different phases of Adlerian therapy and VGT® match. Despite the use of video games in psychotherapy might have some adverse effects in specific cases, VGT® is currently used in three associations with positive results in promoting emotional experimentation and literacy, social feeling, sense of identity, and activating cognitive processes. Future developments include expanding the use of VGT® further to validate such results from a statistical point of view.

Abstract:<span>Research shows that social connectedness is decreasing and loneliness increasing in the United States, subsequently resulting in a health crisis due to the anxiety and depression these attributes can cause. There is evidence that clinicians have difficulty treating individuals experiencing social anxiety and there is need for intervention strategies that lower treatment barriers. There has been scant research recognizing the use of table-top role-playing games to incorporate when treating social anxiety. The current manuscript describes a year-long group using Dungeons and Dragons in a therapeutic setting and explores perceptions from participants who experienced this group. Core concepts of the model and lessons learned from the developers are described for clinicians who hope to incorporate such a model. Participants described increased confidence in social situations, particularly with boundaries or making mistakes. Secondly, the skills practiced in the game were transferred into real-world experiences. Implications for future research and limitations were described.</span>

Abstract:This research aims to reveal the effects of games and drama practical applications on language acquisition for pre-school children. “Game & Drama in Language Acquisition” training program has been applied to 4-6-year-old children attending pre-school educational institutions, and the results were analyzed respectively. The study comprises 126 volunteering parents and 126 children attending pre-school institutions. At the same time, 32 teachers have evaluated the activities. The content of the training program includes modules with game & drama activities that aim to strengthen language acquisition in pre-school children. Data collection tools were the Vocabulary Performance Checklist to analyze the concepts and words acquired by children; Identification Scale of Preschool Teachers' Opinions on Game Activities to reveal the parents' views. In the data analysis, in order to determine the differences of the answers reported by the experimental and control groups in the pre-test and post-test, analyzes were performed for independent groups using t-test, variance analysis, and Mann Whitney U test. The statistical results of the data have revealed that games and drama activities supporting language acquisition increase the level of effectiveness significantly when applied together with parental training and that using games and drama in the preschool period is an effective method for the children's development of self-expression and language using skills consciously.

Abstract:Teaching group therapy is an essential aspect of graduate studies within the helping professions. Existing models discuss four basic elements required for such training: experience, observation, supervised practice, and theory. The present paper offers a model for a group therapy seminar based on these four elements and organized along developmental concepts. Clinical observations of 120 psychology students who participated in the seminar were gathered over a five-year period. Teaching techniques included supervised observation, fish-bowl, one-way mirror, and a final paper integrating theory and practice. The seminar enabled students to practice and to theorize about group processes, both as participants and as co-leaders. Seminar outcomes and conclusions are discussed.

Abstract:Objective: Despite the recognition of the need for group-based training programmes for children and adolescents with autistic disorders, there are only very few specific German-speaking training programmes available. Since 2003, a structured group training programme on social skills for children and adolescents with high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome has been developed and conducted at our department. The training programme focuses on the main deficits of those disorders. Thus, the primary goal is to improve communication and interaction skills. Method: Participants are children and adolescents without significant cognitive and language delays. Principles of intervention include structured formats, combination of theoretical and practical elements, predictable rules, consideration of individual difficulties, and sequential and progressive learning. Techniques range from structured games, the training of affect recognition, group activities, role play, team discussions, and feedback to homework using a newly designed manual on our group-based social skill training programme and curriculum. Generally, three groups of 5-7 participants each and of different age range (children, adolescents) meet weekly/biweekly for 1-1.5 hours (excluding the holidays). Two trainers--who change during the programme--carry out each of the sessions. Trainers meet regularly with the parents to discuss experiences and to provide details of the programme. Results: Acceptance by and satisfaction with the programme are high among participants, as is the mutual recognition of and tolerance of their respective problems. Both feedback from parents and trainers' clinical impressions indicate distinct improvement of verbalization and contact abilities. Participants seem to benefit particularly from role play. Conclusions: Qualtitative measures (impressions of the participants, their parents and their trainers with regard to change in behaviour skills) suggest mounting interaction, communication, and problem-solving skills during the group treatment. An ongoing pilot evaluation also includes measurements of effects in everyday settings. Depending on the results, the training subsequently could be conducted and evaluated in groups with both pervasive developmental, as well as other psychiatric disorders.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to discuss the clinical rationale for designing a tailor-made board game as a therapeutic intervention in play therapy. Games are practiced in play therapy in directive and non-directive ways. Structured and directive approaches are used in individual and group therapy, and enable therapists to identify themes and work them through. A review of the literature concerning the use of games in psychotherapy is suggested in this paper, followed by a detailed rationale for a tailor-made rule-governed board game as a directive theme-focused intervention for short-term group psychotherapy. Such a board game, designed for processing termination in a group of severely deprived adolescent boys in their final year of long-term psychodynamic residential treatment is described. Therapeutic considerations for designing specific elements of the game are described in detail, as well as the symbolic language that served as a framework. Based on a description of clinical thinking used in the preparation of this board game, a discussion of the particular characteristics of designing tailor-made board games as a directive intervention in play therapy is suggested. The paper explains the need for a particular design of game for each specific therapeutic group, based on the identified needs of the participants, as well as on the aim of the intervention.
