Abstract:In recent years, digital storytelling has demonstrated powerful pedagogical functions by improving creativity, collaboration and intimacy among young children. Saturated with digital media technologies in their daily lives, the young generation demands natural interactive learning environments which offer multimodalities of feedback and meaningful immersive learning experiences. Virtual puppetry assisted storytelling system for young children, which utilises depth motion sensing technology and gesture control as the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) method, has been proved to provide natural interactive learning experience for single player. In this paper, we designed and developed a novel system that allows multiple players to narrate, and most importantly, to interact with other characters and interactive virtual items in the virtual environment. We have conducted one user experiment with four young children for pedagogical evaluation and another user experiment with five postgraduate students for system evaluation. Our user study shows this novel digital storytelling system has great potential to stimulate learning abilities of young children through collaboration tasks.

Abstract:The contemplation, containing, and linking that circulate within the analyst’s private space are positioned as key to states of psychic equivalence (the melding of psychic reality and material reality) and to sustained states of unknowing, which are held to be necessary for analytic work and fantastic spontaneity. These modes of practice are considered as they relate to rituals that promote the analyst’s self care. An account of a psychotherapy with a 5-year-old electively mute girl is offered to illustrate the work undertaken in the analyst’s private space, as he seeks to build and sustain potential space and the possibilities borne through play.

Abstract:Studies of group creativity have focused on adults acting in professional settings, with less attention paid to how adolescents collaborate in groups in creative activities. Building on sociocultural perspectives on imagination as a complex capacity in adolescence, this study examines students’ creative-imagining processes and the role of peer influence in group collaboration. The setting of the study is a two-day museum-led workshop on the topic of architecture, which was produced for a national touring program for middle schools. Video data of students’ collaborative interactions comprise the primary data for the analysis. The study identifies material, institutional and relational aspects of group creativity in adolescence. A key finding is how creative influence is socially negotiated when merit-based knowledge and authority in an art domain are not valued. The study also finds that students’ interactions in creative activity may be viewed as evidence of learning processes even without consensus in the group. This research contributes new understandings of adolescents’ creative-imagining processes and creative influence in arts-based learning activities in middle school. Principles for arts-based learning designs are presented:the appropriateness of materials; designing for knowledge dependency in open-ended tasks; and facilitating productive forms of creative influence.

Using group role-playing games with gifted children and adolescents: A psychosocial intervention model.

Abstract:Gifted children develop asynchronously, are often advanced for their age cognitively but at or between their chronological and mental ages socially and emotionally (Robinson, 2008). In order to help gifted children and adolescents develop and practice social and emotional self-regulation skills, we investigated the use of an Adlerian play therapy approach during pen-and-paper role-playing games. Additionally, we used Goffman’s (1961, 1974) social role identification and distance to encourage participants to experiment with new identities. Herein, we propose a psychosocial model of interactions during role-playing games based on Goffman’s theory and Adlerian play therapy techniques, and suggest that role-playing games are an effective way of intervening with gifted children and adolescents to improve their intra- and interpersonal skills. We specifically targeted intrapersonal skills of exercising creativity, becoming self-aware, and setting individual goals by raising participants’ awareness of their privately logical reasons for making decisions and their levels of social interest. We also targeted their needs and means of seeking significance in the group to promote collaboration and interaction skills with other gifted peers through role analysis, embracement, and distancing. We report results from a case study and conclude that role-playing games deserve more attention, both from researchers and clinical practitioners, because they encourage change while improving young clients’ social and emotional development.

Fabrication of functional gel-microbead for local environment measurement in microchip

Abstract:A novel on-chip environment measurement with functional gel-microtool was developed. Environment measurement gel-microtool was fabricated by connecting the gel-microbeads impregnated with indicators in a microchip. In this paper, Bromothymol blue (BTB) and Bromocresol green (BCG) were employed as pH indicators. BTB and BCG have the different indicator range. Rhodamine B is temperature sensitive fluorescent dye and is used for temperature measurement. Gel-microbead is made by salting-out of hydrophilic photo-crosslinkable resin and is manipulated by optical tweezers. Moreover, gel-microbead is polymerized by UV illumination and connected to other gel-microbead under an electrolyte solution. The connection of gel-microbeads is performed by contact of gel-microbeads under UV illumination. Environment measurement gel-microtool with an arbitrary shape is fabricated by connection of the gel-microtool impregnated with arbitrary indicator. Multiple environments measurement gel-microtool included with several indicators is realized by assembly of the gel-microbeads impregnated with different indicators. Environment measurement is performed by detecting the color and the fluorescence intensity of each gel-microbead. We succeeded in the on-chip fabrication of the environment measurement gel-microtools such as circular pH measurement gel-microtool and wide range pH measurement gel-microtool in a microchip.

Abstract:In the field of child psychoanalytic psychotherapy, structured competitive games such as Monopoly, UNO or football have traditionally been regarded as less conducive to deep psychodynamically oriented work. By contrast, some contemporary authors have pointed out that in middle childhood it is often precisely in play with structured games – game-play – that spontaneity and strong emotions come to the fore. These authors suggest that game-play constitutes a potentially powerful therapeutic tool for access to, and communication with, the older child's inner world. In this paper, clinical theoretical arguments are presented alongside clinical examples in support of this view and a variety of forms of game-play encountered in the analytic playroom are discussed and analysed. The paper examines how the rules and partially predetermined content of these games act as a framing structure in which the analytic work can take place safely and spontaneously, and how the model of the container ↔ contained can be usefully applied to game-play in the child therapy room. Emphasis is placed throughout on the therapeutic role of a flexible and carefully calibrated approach to the game's rules and structure and the child's cheating.

Abstract:In the modern world, there is a need to foster creative attitudes from an early age. Guilford’s and Lowenfeld’s research has proven that developing a creative attitude through fields related to art (art and music) and technology is reflected in the development of creativity in later life, e.g., in learning process. Children have an innate need to create, transform and experiment. This is especially noticeable at pre-school and early school age when they are keenly interested in the objects and phenomena surrounding them. Handicrafts use natural materials in an unconventional way and provide children with real tools. They create surprising, new and curiosity-stimulating situations in which children can develop creative attitudes. The article describes the method of conducting classes according to a selected scenario (tic-tac-toe game) in a private kindergarten near Warsaw, where a pedagogical innovation was carried out involving the implementation of handicraft classes in the 2022/2023 school year. Pedagogical observation made it possible to draw the conclusion that handicraft workshops support the development of creative attitudes in preschool children and influence their agency, while the adult’s openness to implementing children’s ideas into practice strengthens children’s self-motivation and sense of coherence.

Abstract:In this paper, I lay out a blueprint for a child analysis, stipulating the terms and ethics of the Lacanian field of psychoanalysis, the position of the analyst in that field, and the invitation to the child to discover a space for desire in the work of play. Drawing on the grounding work of Freud, Lacan, Dolto, Lefort, Mannoni, and Mathelin, I describe the mainsprings of the psychoanalytic clinic with the child. I then offer a child case and its trajectory from the development of a phobia to a symptom, and show how the primal scene fantasy and its articulation can open a space for desire in a child's play. What is particular to this work of playing is the emergence of signifiers that chain across generations, and move into new metaphors that foreground the Real of the child's experience and desire.
[The Sceno Game in the course of time]

Abstract:This article describes 50 years of working with the Sceno test, the first decades being in close cooperation with Gerhild von Staabs. After many years experience with the Sceno test in Swiss psychiatric hospitals over 1000 Sceno test games were conducted in the psychosomatic ward of the University of Munich Outpatient Department for Children and evaluated with a special record and slides. These were games carried out by children and adolescents with behavioral disorders, psychosomatic illnesses, and handicaps, in some cases by their mothers in an accompanying simultaneous analysis. Using the projective method the initial Sceno test, vulgar and original answers, key situations, repetition and memory compulsions were recorded. With 100 adults diagnosed as being schizophrenic Sceno tests with chaotic apparent order analogous to pictures painted by schizophrenics were observed. With adults and children with cerebro-organic damage we found an "organic play syndrom" in the game structure. Six medical dissertations dealt with the psychosomatics of children. Along with the depth psychology problems, in principle, the formality of the Sceno test set-up depending on age and development phase of the child also has to be taken into consideration. The Sceno test in its original form has proven itself to be up to date even today and requires only minor changes to some game elements, adapting them to the modern surroundings of children which means that a Sceno-R (Fliegner 1995) with 23 new game elements seems unnecessary. Psychodiagnostics and psychotherapy of our Sceno test game are based on the analytical method of Hans Zulliger and Anna Freud.

Abstract:Arabidopsis VRN genes mediate vernalization, the process by which a long period of cold induces a mitotically stable state that leads to accelerated flowering during later development. VRN1 encodes a protein that binds DNA in vitro in a non–sequence-specific manner and functions in stable repression of the major target of the vernalization pathway, the floral repressor FLC. Overexpression of VRN1 reveals a vernalization-independent function for VRN1, mediated predominantly through the floral pathway integratorFT, and demonstrates that VRN1 requires vernalization-specific factors to target FLC.
A Conversational Model of art therapy

Abstract:This paper illustrates a 'Conversational Model' of art therapy. The Conversational Model was jointly created by Robert Hobson and Russell Meares. It is a developmental theory unique in its clinical application. The focus of the paper is two sessions that altered the course of therapy. In these sessions, variations on Donald Winnicott's "squiggle-game" and Hobson's "party game" were used to engage an isolative, reluctant incarcerated patient. The interventions illustrate the basic tenets of the Conversational Model. The theoretical process--from disruption to repair--is visually recorded in the artwork. The central argument of the paper is that interactive art therapy interventions can be effective, when used appropriately. By engaging the patient in a 'visual' conversation, he/she may develop an emotional vocabulary, a prerequisite for a psychotherapeutic conversation. The paper begins with a brief historical overview of the interface between art and psychoanalysis, the context out of which 'art therapy'--a distinct body of theory--evolved. Theory interweaves with clinical material in a narrative style. What I say and do in therapy is aimed at promoting understanding: a 'conversation', a meeting between two experiencing subjects (an I and a Thou), here and now, in such a way that learning can be effective in other relationships. If, as I believe, psychotherapy is a matter of promoting a personal dialogue, then we need to know how to receive, express, and share feeling: how to learn a language of the heart in its 'minute particulars'.

Abstract:In the introduction pages to popular children games, Pitrè describes play activities as a form of "creative pastimes" which serve to sharpen the mind and develop physical forces, anticipating, by over a century or so, the subsequent reflections on motor praxeology (Parlebas, 2010, pp. 131-148). Traditional games, expression of innocent amusements (Pitrè, 1888) help children to take part in the construction of their own story, highlighting the strong relationship between games and childhood developmental development, on which that of the communities from which it originates depends. In the course of the historical evolution of the school, the need to include both games from the past and the most current teaching methodologies in school curricula has been gradually formalized, recreating interactive and dynamic environments and game situations, not simply reproductive and executive, but propositive and creative (Almond, L. 1986). Traditional games offer an original interpretation of social human phenomena, confirming that "culture is first played" (Huizinga, 2002). This emphasis on playful memories of the past calls for an interesting reflection on popular heritage, starting with traditional games to be presented to children, right from the first schooling.

Abstract:A Chinese student of psychoanalytic child therapy, Hu Fangjia (HF), presented to a small clinical case consultation group an obsessional thirteen-year-old boy who spoke of nothing but equipment for streaming video games. A Western small group consultant, Jill Savege Scharff (JSS), encouraged the bored group to consider the unconscious symbolism in the boy’s obsessive communication in order to sustain interest in understanding his experience of loss and neglect as the eldest living boy in his family.

Abstract:This paper reports three exploratory empirical studies with older adults that had little or no prior experience with interactive technologies. The participants were introduced to interactive technology by playing games on touchscreens, playing in pairs with the assistance of a mentor. We focus on two principle aspects, the peer-to-peer interaction during these sessions, and the role of the mentor in progressing the sessions. In the case of peer-to-peer interaction we looked for ways in which players supported each other during interaction to assess the role of peer interaction in this context. In the case of mentoring, we examined the efficacy of a minimalist approach where verbal encouragement, suggestions or (in the last resort) intervention are used to provide support to learners. The sessions showed that learners typically could play and learn basic manipulations independently after initial help and guidance from mentors. We also found that peer interaction, both in verbal and non-verbal communication and cooperative action was broadly a positive influence within sessions, suggesting that there is a significant value in building confidence as well as in learning.

Abstract:Background: The number of migrant youth traveling without parents continues to rise in Europe and North America. Some of t hem leave their home countries on their own and find themselves in a new country, separated from their family and cut off from their cultural roots. Besides those who leave to study, work, and pursue a better life, others are escaping war-torn countries. They need adequate social, educational, and therapeutic spaces, where they can feel entitled to speak. Social workers often ask about how they can understand these young people better so that they can provide them with better care (cope with their trauma and suspicion, deal with the cultural distance between the adolescents and their social workers, etc).Aim: At Cochin Hospital in Paris, we led a participative action-research program to transmit cultural competence to social workers who provide care for these youth. The aim was to develop an approach to help these young migrants to share their representations about themselves and to train these social workers to encourage this sharing in a culturally sensitive manner.Methods: This study used a qualitative method that mixed narrative and transcultural approaches. Two researchers met each youth and social worker with an interpreter-cultural mediator three times (once a month) to assess changes in their relationships during the study. The youth were asked to bring three items of their choice, representing their past, present, and future. They could use their imagination and creativity. We also used the circle test described by Cottle for this purpose. We used a phenomenological approach to analyze the interviews.Results and Discussion: This study included 29 young people from 13 different countries and 29 social workers. A transcultural approach appears to be a useful framework for reactivating their identity construction process. It promotes the emergence of cultural representations and takes their experiences before, during, and after migration into account. We assisted them in developing their ability to produce a thorough narrative of their bicultural adolescences and simultaneously helped their social workers to develop their cultural competence.Conclusion: Together, a transcultural approach and methods stimulating the production of narrative are relevant ways to help children to describe their representations of themselves, especially those who have learned to protect themselves by remaining silent. This protocol could be useful for both preventive action and therapy for psychotrauma.

Abstract:This study presents novel strategies to investigate the mutual influence of trust and group dynamics in children-robot interaction. We implemented a game-like experimental activity with the humanoid robot iCub and designed a questionnaire to assess how the children perceived the interaction. We also aim to verify if the sensors, setups, and tasks are suitable for studying such aspects. The questionnaires' results demonstrate that youths perceive iCub as a friend and, typically, in a positive way. Other preliminary results suggest that, generally, children trusted iCub during the activity and, after its mistakes, they tried to reassure it with sentences such as: "Don't worry iCub, we forgive you". Furthermore, trust towards the robot in group cognitive activity appears to change according to gender: after two consecutive mistakes by the robot, girls tended to trust iCub more than boys. Finally, no significant difference has been evidenced between different age groups across points computed from the game and the self-reported scales. The tool we proposed is suitable for studying trust in human-robot interaction (HRI) across different ages and seems appropriate to understand the mechanism of trust in group interactions.
Gender and cultural differences in the development of reciprocity in young children.

Abstract:A foundational mechanism underlying human cooperation is reciprocity. In the context of repeated interactions with others, it is not always clear the degree to which in-kind responses reflect responsiveness to partners' prior behaviors ("reactive" responses), an interest unrelated to the partner ("nonreactive" responses), or any combination of the two. To disentangle these two types of responses, we presented children with sequential, one-shot, and costly interactions between themselves and either egalitarian or selfish peers. Study 1 tested direct, generalized, and normative reciprocal scenarios (N = 144 seven-year-old German children; 50% girls and 50% boys), finding that "nonreactive" responses were dominant for boys and manifested in the form of "selfish" resource distribution. Among girls, "reactive" responses were dominant and manifested in the form of in-kind resource distribution. Study 2 addressed even younger German children (N = 144; 4- to 8-year-old German children; 50% girls and 50% boys), exposing the same phenomenon among 4-year-olds, but not among 5.5-year-olds. Study 3 addressed 7-year-old Israeli children (N = 95; 49% girls and 51% boys), and replicated the basic phenomenon, with an additional cultural variation. The early emergence of gender differences in reciprocity and implications are discussed in cultural, socio-developmental, and evolutionary accounts. Abstract:Speech therapy conversations between five dyads, consisting of senior speech pathology students and hearing-impaired adolescents enrolled in a Total Communication programme, were videorecorded for five weekly sessions. Samples over one-minute intervals at the start, middle, and end of the sessions were analysed for nonverbal behaviour at 3-second periods on 5-point scales covering body orientation, body position, eye gaze, facial expression, head position, and gesture/hand movement. Combination of the six resulting scores produced composite scores, which analysis of variance showed to differ significantly between dyads, sessions, intervals, and conversation partners (students versus adolescents). There were also significant interactions between dyads X sessions, dyads X partners, and sessions X partners. Examples using simple time series analysis complemented the analysis of variance by describing evidence for cyclical involvement between conversation partners.

Language as Gesture in Merleau-Ponty: Some implications for method in therapeutic practice and research

Abstract:The unexpected invention of a game with my grandchildren provided a new way of thinking about the nature of such unpredictable moments in therapy. The experience brought together a number of ideas, considered through the view of language taken by Merleau-Ponty where the chaotic primitive layers that pervade language are seen as having primacy over the rules of linguistics such as those set out by Saussure. Saussure is seen as providing a way of understanding linguistic structure whilst at the same time opening a number of ambiguities that then allow a way for thinking about language differently through Merleau-Ponty's emphasis on the usage of language (la parole) as opposed the structural aspects of language (la langue). Initially, Winnicott's ideas around the 'spontaneous gesture' are utilised to help show how this kind of unpredictable expression appears as something alive. Merleau-Ponty then shows how language as gestural phenomena takes hold of us through our bodies. Further questions then arise about the method in therapeutic practice and research. Here, it is argued that when the method is given primacy over experience, we are in a position that seeks the already known, which will not, therefore, permit some new expression to break through.

Abstract:Digital tools have long been used for supporting children's creativity. Digital games that allow children to create artifacts and express themselves in a playful environment serve as efficient Creativity Support Tools (or CSTs). Creativity is also scaffolded by social interactions with others in their environment. In our work, we explore the use of game-based interactions with a social agent to scaffold children's creative expression as game players. We designed three collaborative games and play-tested with 146 5-10 year old children played with the social robot Jibo, which affords three different kinds of creativity: verbal creativity, figural creativity and divergent thinking during creative problem solving. In this paper, we reflect on game mechanic practices that we incorporated to design for stimulating creativity in children. These strategies may be valuable to game designers and HCI researchers designing games and social agents for supporting children's creativity.
