Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the relationships of childhood obesity and the duration of sleep as well as insulin resistance. METHODS:Two hundred and sixty-nine simple obese children aged from 7 to 15 years with body mass index(BMI) over 23 and 120 normal healthy children were recruited in this study. Obese children were divided into three groups: Group A: 23 < or = BMI < 25; Group B: 25 < or = BMI < 30; Group C: BMI > or = 30. Duration of sleep was calculated according to the reported sleeping hours during working days and weekends. Oral glucose tolerance test and insulin releasing test were performed in all obese children. Seventy of the 120 healthy children received fasting plasma glucose (FBG) and fasting insulin (FINS) detection. Homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and islet beta cell secreting index (HOMA-IS) were calculated. RESULTS:The duration of sleep was shorter in all 3 obese groups than that in the control group and the levels of FBG, FINS and HOMA-IR were higher (P < 0.05). The levels of HOMA-IS in Group B and C were higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05), while HOMA-IS did not show much difference among the 3 obese groups and between Group A and the control group (P > 0.05). Logistic analysis showed that the duration of sleep was related to childhood obese (P < 0.05). Results from multiple linear regression model analysis showed that BMI bore a relation to HOMA-IR and HOMA-IS (P < 0.05), as well as one unit increase in BMI accompanied with 0.261 and 11.054 increase in HOMA-IR and HOMA-IS, respectively. CONCLUSION:Children with shorter duration of sleep were susceptible to become obese. A significant correlation did exist between BMI and insulin resistance.

Abstract:This study examined the cross-sectional and longitudinal association of sleep timing with weight status in 14- to 19-year-old adolescents in Wuhan, China. A prospective school-based study was conducted in Wuhan, China between 28 May and 29 September 2019. Data on sociodemographic information, academic performance, diet, mental health status, physical activity, sleep characteristics, body weight, and height were collected. A linear regression model and binary logistic regression model were performed. A total of 1194 adolescents were included in the analysis. Adolescents who woke up before 05:45 had higher body mass index (BMI) Z-score (odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.28 (1.05, 1.57), p = 0.02) and higher odds of overweight/obesity (odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.74 (1.10, 2.76), p = 0.02) at baseline after fully adjustment for covariates, compared with those who woke up after 05:45. Longitudinal data showed a nonsignificant association between waking up time and change in BMI Z-score (p = 0.18). No association of bedtime with weight status was observed in this sample after full adjustment (p > 0.1). Earlier waking up time might contribute to overweight and obesity in adolescents; however, more data are needed to test and elucidate this relationship.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Insufficient sleep and circadian disruption are known modifiable risk factors for obesity. Chronotype reflects an individual's preferences in sleep timing and behaviors. This study examined the association between sleep characteristics and common obesity indicators, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), according to chronotype in Korean adults. Methods This study used data from the Korean Medicine Daejeon Citizen Cohort study of 2,000 participants in their 30s to 50s from 2017 to 2019. The survey examined several sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. Sleep characteristics including time, quality, latency, and efficiency were investigated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire. Chronotype was classified into morning (M), evening (E), and intermediate types based on single nucleotide polymorphisms in insomnia-related genes such as SYCE1L, IP6K3, PLCL1, APOE, and DPP3. Anthropometric measurements of BMI and WC were performed to assess obesity indices. General linear model adjusted for sex and age was performed to determine association between sleep and obesity index according to morning and evening types. Results Among the total 2,000 participants, the chronotype distribution was 5.3% morning type, 9.5% evening type, and 85.2% intermediate type. The evening type tended to have shorter sleep time (M: 6.75, E: 6.66 hr), poor sleep quality (M: 4.55, E: 4.68 score), longer sleep latency (M 19.7, E: 22.5 min), and low sleep efficiency(M: 95.1, E: 94.7%) than the morning type, but there was no statistically significant difference. The WC and BMI of the morning and evening types were similar. Morning type was associated with long sleep latency and increased WC (B= 0.12, 95% CI= 0.01 – 0.22, p=0.01). However, there was no association between them in the evening type. Additionally, morning types, being married and having less physical activity were associated with increased WC. Male was associated with increased WC and BMI, regardless of morning and evening types. Conclusion This study has demonstrated that the associations between sleep status and obesity indicators may vary in Korean middle-aged adults depending on chronotype, especially morning type. Future study will be needed on the causality between obesity considering chronotype, sleep status, and general characteristics. Support (if any)

Abstract:Prevalence of hypertension in adolescents has increased worldwide and is considered a risk factor for hypertension and cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Although obesity and sleep deficiency increase this risk, the combined effects of these factors on hypertension remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the combined effects of obesity and sleep duration on hypertension in adolescents. This study was conducted using data from the 2016 to 2018 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which included a study population of 1272 adolescents. The participants were categorized into four groups based on sleep duration and body mass index (BMI) percentiles: normal sleep and normal body mass group (reference; normal), only short sleep group (short sleep), only overweight/obesity group (overweight/obesity), and short sleep and overweight/obesity group (short sleep and overweight/obesity). Short sleep duration was defined as <8 h of average sleep duration, and overweight/obesity was defined as a BMI ≥ 85th percentile. Hypertension in adolescents was defined as a systolic blood pressure ≥130 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≥80 mmHg. The prevalence of hypertension was 9.2% among Korean adolescents. Short sleep duration with overweight/obesity were associated with a significantly increased risk of hypertension (odds ratio = 6.57; 95% confidence interval: 3.27–13.20) in adolescents, and controlling for the potential confounding variables only partially attenuated this relationship (odds ratio = 5.28; 95% confidence interval: 2.28–12.26). This study demonstrated that the coexistence of short sleep duration and obesity was associated with an increased risk of hypertension in Korean adolescents.

Abstract:Objective To examine the relationship between sleep and obesity in children 3 to 4 years old in Shanghai, China.Study design A total of 1311 Chinese children from 10 kindergarten classes in Shanghai, aged 3 to 4 years, who were participating in the kindergarten entrance health examination in 2000, were included in the study. Body weight and height were measured, and a questionnaire was given to the children's parents about sleep and physical and social characteristics of the children and their family. The main outcome measure was obesity, defined as body mass index (kg/m(2)) >= 95th percentile for the children.Results Compared with children reporting >= 11 hours of sleep per night, the odds ratio for childhood obesity was 4.76 (95% Cl, 1.28-17.69) for children with <9 hours of sleep, and 3.42 (95% Cl, 1.12-10.46) for children with 9.0 to 9.4 hours of sleep, after adjustment for age, sex, and other risk factors. Children with caregivers who slept less, who had mothers with higher education, or who co-slept with caregivers had less nighttime sleep than other children.Conclusion Short sleep duration is positively associated with obesity in preschool children, and short nighttime sleep duration is significantly related to bedtime and co-sleeping with caregivers. Abstract:BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to compare dietary habits and mental health among middle school students in urban and rural areas based on bedtime, and to provide evidence supporting appropriate bedtime for Korean middle school students in relation to their healthy dietary habits and mental well-being.SUBJECTS/METHODS: The study population consisted of 25,681 second-year middle school students who participated in the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey in 2020-2022. Participants were asked about their bedtime and wake-up time during the past 7 days and were classified into five categories. The study compared the general characteristics, academic factors, dietary habits, and mental health of urban and rural students based on their bedtime.RESULTS: Bedtime was found to be later in the following order: urban female students, rural female students, urban male students, and rural male students. As bedtime got later, the rates of smoking and alcohol consumption increased. Students who went to bed before 11 p.m. had lower academic performance, while rural male students who went to bed after 2 a.m. had lower academic performance. Later bedtime was associated with increased smartphone usage, skipping breakfast, consuming fast food, and drinking carbonated beverages. Later bedtime was also associated with higher perceived stress levels, particularly among students who went to bed after 2 a.m., higher rates of suicidal ideation, experiencing sadness and despair, as well as the prevalence of clinically significant anxiety disorders.CONCLUSION: These results suggest that middle school students who go to bed too late have higher rates of smoking and alcohol drinking, as well as unhealthy eating habits, stress, suicidal ideation, sadness, and anxiety. Therefore, it is necessary to provide educational and social institutional support to promote adequate sleep for the health of adolescents.

Interaction between adolescent sleep rhythms and gender in an obese population

Abstract:BACKGROUND The obesity rate of adolescents is gradually increasing, which seriously affects their mental health, and sleep plays an important role in adolescent obesity. AIM To investigate the relationship between sleep rhythm and obesity among adolescents and further explores the interactive effect of sleep rhythm and gender on adolescent obesity, providing a theoretical basis for developing interventions for adolescent obesity. METHODS Research data source Tianjin Mental Health Promotion Program for Students. From April to June 2022, this study selected 14201 students from 13 middle schools in a certain district of Tianjin as the research subject using the convenient cluster sampling method. Among these students, 13374 accepted and completed the survey, with an effective rate of 94.2%.The demographic data and basic information of adolescents, such as height and weight, were collected through a general situation questionnaire. The sleep rhythm of adolescents was evaluated using the reduced version of the morningness-eveningness questionnaire. RESULTS A total of 13374 participants (6629 females, accounting for 49.56%; the average age is 15.21 ± 1.433 years) were analyzed. Among them, the survey showed that 2942 adolescent were obesity, accounting for 22% and 2104 adolescent were overweight, accounting for 15.7%. Among them, 1692 male adolescents are obese, with an obesity rate of 25.1%, higher than 18.9% of female adolescents. There is a statistically significant difference between the three groups (c 2 =231.522, P < 0.000). The obesity group has the smallest age (14.94 ± 1.442 years), and there is a statistical difference in age among the three groups (F = 69.996, P < 0.000).Obesity rates are higher among individuals who are not-only-child, have residential experience within six months, have family economic poverty, and have evening-type sleep (P < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis shows a correlation between sleep rhythm and adolescent obesity. Evening-type sleep rhythm can increase the risk of obesity in male adolescents [1.250 (1.067-1.468)], but the effect on female obesity is not remarkable. Further logistic regression analysis in the overall population demonstrates that the interaction between evening-type sleep rhythm and the male gender poses a risk of adolescent obesity [1.122 (1.043-1.208)]. CONCLUSION Among adolescents, t he incidence of obesity in males is higher than in females. Evening-type sleep rhythm plays an important role in male obesity but has no significant effect on female obesity. Progressive analysis suggests an interactive effect of sleep rhythm and gender on adolescent obesity, and the combination of evening-type sleep and the male gender promotes the development of adolescent obesity. In formulating precautions against adolescent obesity, obesity in male adolescents with evening-type sleep should be a critical concern.

Abstract:Background The relationship of insufficient sleep with the increased risk of obesity has been reported, but less is known about other sleep dimensions in the sleep-obesity associations. Objectives To assess the associations of multiple sleep dimensions with overall and abdominal obesity among Chinese students. Methods This was a cross-sectional study involving 10,686 Han students aged 9–18 from Chinese National Survey on Students’ Constitution and Health (CNSSCH). We collected sex, age, regions, parental educational levels, physical activity duration and sleep-related information by questionnaire survey, and also conducted anthropometric measurements including height, weight and waist circumference (WC). Unadjusted and adjusted binary logistic regression models were used to estimate the associations of sleep-related dimensions with obesity-related indicators. Results Short sleep duration was associated with higher body mass index (BMI), larger WC and higher waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) in 9–12 and 16–18 age groups, whereas prolonged sleep duration on weekday was associated with higher BMI in 13–15 age group. Non-habitual midday napping and midday napping ≤0.5 h/d (vs 0.5 to 1 h/d) increased the risk of higher BMI in 13–15 age group, and the former was also associated with larger WC in 9–12 age group. Late bedtime was associated with larger WC and higher WHtR in 9–12 age group and with higher BMI and WHtR in 13–15 age group. Students aged 9–12 with social jet lag ≥2 h were found to have greater BMI after adjustment (Odds Ratio: 1.421; 95% confidence interval: 1.066–1.894). Conclusions Short or overlong sleep duration, late bedtime and great social jet lag were associated with higher prevalence of overall or abdominal obesity, while moderate midday napping can effectively decrease the risk. Those findings may assist in developing preventive strategies to combat obesity epidemic.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the associations of sleep duration, wake-up time, bedtime, and childhood abdominal obesity, and to test whether there is a weekday/weekend difference and the potential modifying role of sex.</p> Methods This cross-sectional study was based on the Students' Constitution and Health Survey and included 9559 students (4840 boys and 4719 girls) aged 7-18 years (7227 aged 7-12 years, 2332 aged 13-18 years). They were divided into two groups (control group and group with abdominal obesity). The physical measurements included children and youth body height, body weight, and waist circumference (WC). A parent-report questionnaire was used to collect the information about parent characteristics as well as lifestyle and sleep patterns (sleep duration, bedtime, and wake-up time of weekdays and weekends) of children and youth.</p> Results The prevalence of abdominal obesity was 30.57% and the percentages of sleep duration <9 hours/day, wake-up time before 07:00 am on weekdays and weekends, bedtime after 10:00 pm on weekends were significantly higher in the group with abdominal obesity. After adjusting for confounders, sleep duration <9 hours/day on weekends was inversely related to abdominal obesity in the overall subjects, regardless of their sex and age, while bedtime after 10:00 pm on weekends was inversely related to abdominal obesity only in the overall subjects, boys, and children aged 7-12 years. Logistic regression models in all subjects showed that shorter hours of weekends sleep duration were associated with greater risks of abdominal obesity, even after adjusting for all confounders, including wake-up time and bedtime. The adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of abdominal obesity (with >= 10 hours/day as the reference group) for children with 9-10 hours/day, 8-9 hours/day, and <8 hours/day of weekend sleep duration were 1.23 (1.04-1.46), 1.59 (1.32-1.91) and 1.83 (1.42-2.36), respectively. Specifically, after stratification by sex and age, this phenomenon was only observed in boys and children aged 7-12 years.</p> Conclusions Sleep duration and bedtime on weekends were independently associated with the risk of childhood abdominal obesity, particularly in boys and children aged 7-12 years.</p>

Abstract:Purpose: This study examined the combined effects of sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption, screen-based sedentary behaviors, and sleep duration on adolescent obesity.Methods: It followed a cross-sectional study design and conducted secondary analysis on data from 20,497 high school students who participated in the 17th (2021) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. This study underwent logistic regression analysis in complex sampling analysis.Results: The combinations of low and medium consumption of SSBs, excessive screen-based sedentary behaviors, and short sleep durations were associated with a 1.18 and 1.12 fold increased likelihood of obesity (95% confidence interval [CI]=1.03–1.35) and (95% CI=1.02–1.22), respectively. The combination of high SSB consumption, appropriate screen-based sedentary behaviors, and short sleep duration (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]=1.15, 95% CI=1.01–1.31) and high SSB consumption, excessive screen-based sedentary behaviors, and short sleep duration (aOR=1.40, 95% CI=1.16–1.69) were associated with obesity.Conclusion: Integrated and tailored programs considering combination patterns of SSB consumption, screen-based sedentary behaviors, and short sleep duration need to be developed for preventing adolescent obesity.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Poor sleep and mental health problems commonly emerge in adolescence, with a higher prevalence in females and those who suffer from obesity. Here, we evaluated the complex associations between poor sleep, obesity, and biological sex and how they interact to influence wellbeing in a large, diverse cohort of adolescents in the US. Methods Data were analyzed from 7,261 adolescents (Year 2: Mean age=11.94 years, range: 10-14 years, 47.3% female), collected as part of the ongoing ABCD Study®. Sleep duration was assessed with the Munich Chronotype questionnaire (youth-report), and sleep quality was assessed with a question about having trouble falling or staying asleep in the past two weeks from the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (KSADS-5) (youth-report). Internalizing and externalizing problems were assessed using the Child Behavior Checklist (caregiver-report). Positive affect was assessed with the NIH-toolbox measures. Regression models examined associations between obesity (>95 body mass index percentile), sleep behavior and mental health, considering sex differences, age, and socio-demographic characteristics. Results Short sleep duration and poorer sleep quality, as well as obesity were associated with higher internalizing (p<.01) and externalizing (p<.01) problems. Adolescents with obesity and prolonged sleep duration had higher internalizing (p=.01) and externalizing problems (p<.01). Shorter sleep duration (p<.01) and poorer sleep quality (p=.01) were associated with lower positive affect, with stronger effects in female adolescents. Obesity partially mediated the association between sleep problems and positive affect (p<.01). Conclusion This study demonstrates a strong link between sleep, obesity, and mental health outcomes in adolescents, highlighting significant sex differences. Poor sleep quality and obesity is related to more internalizing and externalizing problems and lower positive affect, with notable with notable impacts on female adolescents. These findings highlight the importance of addressing sleep and obesity in adolescent mental health interventions, recognizing the unique vulnerabilities and needs of male and female adolescents and those with obesity. Abstract:Background: Short sleep duration has been related to obesity in children and adolescents. However, it remains unknown whether late bedtime is also associated with obesity and whether the association is independent of sleep duration. A meta-analysis was performed to address this issue. Methods: In order to accomplish the aim of the meta-analysis, a comprehensive search was conducted on databases including PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science to identify observational studies. The cutoff to determine late bedtime in children in this meta-analysis was consistent with the value used among the included original studies. As for obesity, it was typically defined as a body mass index (BMI) > 95th percentile of age and sex specified reference standards or the International Obesity Task Force defined age- and gender-specific cut-off of BMI. The Cochrane Q test was employed to evaluate heterogeneity among the included studies, while the I 2 statistic was estimated. Random-effects models were utilized to merge the results, considering the potential impact of heterogeneity. Results: Tweleve observational studies with 57,728 participants were included. Among them, 6,815 (11.8%) were obese. Pooled results showed that late bedtime reported by the participants or their caregivers was associated with obesity (odds ratio [OR]: 1.27, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.16–1.39, p < 0.001; I 2 = 0%). Subgroup analysis showed consistent results in studies with (OR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.04–1.70, p = 0.02) and without adjustment of sleep duration (OR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.14–1.41, p < 0.001). Further subgroup analysis also showed that the association was not significantly affected by study location, design, age of the participants, or diagnostic methods for obesity ( p for subgroup difference all >0.05). Conclusion: Late bedtime is associated with obesity in children and adolescents, which may be independent of sleep duration.

Abstract:STUDY OBJECTIVESTo examine the association between sleep duration and overweight/obesity in preschool-aged children.METHODSA total of 48,922 3-year old children enrolled in the Jiaxing Birth Cohort, who provided sleep information and anthropometric data, were included in the present study as baseline and were followed up to 5 years of age. Sleep duration was categorized as ≤ 10 hours, 11-12 hours, and ≥ 13 hours. Overweight and obesity were defined according to the cut point criteria in China. Prevalence ratios and risk ratios were used to assess the association between sleep duration and risk of overweight/obesity.RESULTSIn cross-sectional analyses at baseline, the adjusted prevalence ratios (95% confidence interval) of overweight (with 11-12 h of sleep being considered the reference group) for children sleeping ≤ 10 h and ≥ 13 h were 1.13 (1.06-1.20) and 1.16 (1.09-1.24), respectively, whereas the adjusted prevalence ratios (95% confidence interval) of obesity were 1.25 (1.11-1.40) and 1.25 (1.11-1.42). In longitudinal analyses, the adjusted risk ratios (95% confidence interval) of overweight for children sleeping ≤ 10 h and ≥ 13 h were 1.48 (1.26-1.74) and 1.13 (0.96-1.34), while adjusted risk ratios (95% confidence interval) of obesity were 1.77 (1.30-2.40) and 1.19 (0.85-1.66). Restricted cubic splines regression supported U-shaped curvilinear associations between sleep duration and overweight/obesity in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses.CONCLUSIONSBoth short and overlong sleep duration are associated with a higher risk of overweight/obesity in preschool-aged children. Optimizing sleep duration may be an important modifiable intervention for overweight and obesity.

Abstract:We have successfully synthesized hydroxyapatite fibers via a homogenous precipitation method. Using these hydroxyapatite fibers, we have produced the apatite fiber scaffolds (AFS) with well-controlled pore sizes (porosity above 95%). The AFS is relatively simple to synthesize, and its porosity and pore size are controllable. The usefulness of AFS as a scaffold for bone regeneration was evaluated by (1) seeding and culturing cells in the AFS in vitro, (2) implanting the AFS seeded with cells inside the subcutaneous tissue of mice. The AFS had biocompatibility to support cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. Ectopic bone formation could be formed in the AFS at 12 weeks after implantation into the subcutaneous tissue. Because of its high interpore connection, pore diameters, and porosity, it was believed that AFS was an effective scaffold that provided a three-dimensional cell culture environment. In both in vitro and in vivo environments, the more porous AFS was more advantageous in cell proliferation, cell adhesion, proliferating capacity, robust cell differentiation, ultimately inducing bone ingrowth inside the scaffolds.

Abstract:The present study was designed to examine the association of sleep duration with obesity/overweight in a multicentric urban sample of Chinese children.A random sample of 17,696 children aged 7.00-11.99 years participated in a cross-sectional multicentric survey.The Chinese version of the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire was used to collect information on children's sleep behaviors. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated as weight (kilograms)/height squared (square meters). Sex, age, and BMI were used to define overweight and obesity based on the definition recommended by the Working Group on Obesity in China.The prevalence of obesity and overweight in Chinese school-aged children was 10.7% and 10.3%, respectively. Hierarchical multiple linear regression models revealed a significant association between shorter sleep duration (hours/day) and increased BMI (β = -0.120; P = .019). Multivariate logistic regression models demonstrated that, compared with sleep duration ≥10 hours/d, mean sleep duration <9 hours/d experienced increased likelihood of overweight/obesity (odds ratio = 1.21; P = .005). Moreover, sleep-schedule variability, independent of sleep duration, was found to be associated with overweight/obesity (odds ratio = 1.11; P = .016).Sleep duration and sleep-schedule variability, along with television viewing, homework schedule, and snack eating, were linked to overweight/obesity among elementary school children in this population-based sample.

Abstract:Abstract Background and objective The high prevalence of obesity is a serious problem, and sleep is considered to be a factor for obesity. This study aimed to examine the relationship between sleep duration, sleep quality, and weight status among children and adolescents in China and to explore whether the relationship between sleep duration and weight status is independent of sleep quality. Sex and age differences were also explored. Methods A cross-sectional research was conducted among 2019 children and adolescents (1029 boys and 990 girls) aged 8–16 years in Shanghai. An open-question was used to obtain data on sleep duration, which was categorized into the following four groups based on the age-specific National Sleep Foundation Sleep Duration Recommendations: 1) very short, 2) short, 3) recommended, and 4) long. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess sleep quality. Weight and height were measured for all participants. The variable weight status was estimated with the Chinese children and adolescent age- and sex-specific body mass index (BMI) and was categorized into overweight/obesity and normal weight. Results Short sleep duration (7–8 and 6–7 h for 6–13 and 14–16 years old, respectively) significantly increased odds of overweight/obesity (OR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.06–1.64) compared with that of the recommended sleep duration (9–11 and 8–10 h for 6–13 and 14–16 years old, respectively). The relationship between the two variables existed independent of sleep quality. No significant relationship was found between sleep quality and overweight/obesity of children and adolescents. Sleep quality (OR = 1.07, 95% CI: 1.01–1.14) and short sleep duration (OR = 1.51, 95% CI: 1.06–2.13) increased the risk for overweight/obesity among girls, whereas no significant relationships between sleep duration, sleep quality, and overweight/obesity were found among boys. Short sleep duration increased the risk of overweight/obesity in children aged 8–13 years (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.05–1.71), independent of sleep quality, but no significant relationships between these two variables existed for adolescents aged 14–16 years. Conclusions Overall, short sleep duration increased the risks of overweight/obesity in children and adolescents in China, independent of sleep quality. This relationship is significant for girls and children aged 8–13 years instead of boys and adolescents aged 14–16 years. Interventions to extend the sleep duration of children and adolescents, especially girls and children aged 8–13 years in China, are necessary to improve their weight status.

Abstract:Short sleep duration has been linked to an increased obesity risk, and emerging evidence suggests that diet quality potentially influences this association. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the association of obesity with sleep duration and diet quality in adults. The participants comprised 10,967 adults (4623 men and 6344 women) aged 19–64 years who participated in the 7th National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016–2018). Sleep duration was categorized into adequate (≥7 h) and insufficient (<7 h). Diet quality was evaluated using the Korean Healthy Eating Index (KHEI), with scores ranging from 0 to 100, based on 14 dietary components. Obesity was associated with higher rates of insufficient sleep in women but not in men. After adjusting for covariates, the obesity risk in women with insufficient sleep was approximately 1.3 times higher than that in women with adequate sleep (odds ratio [95% confidence interval] = 1.270 [1.058–1.525]), and this association was exclusively observed in the "KHEI ≤ median score" group (men, 59.95; women, 63.30). In conclusion, enhanced diet quality may act as an effect modifier in the association between insufficient sleep and a high obesity risk in women. These findings suggest that the association between sleep duration and obesity risk is potentially modified by dietary quality in adult women. Future studies with larger sample sizes and a prospective or interventional design are warranted to augment current knowledge regarding the association of diet quality/dietary patterns, and sleep duration with obesity.

Abstract:Background Information on the relationship between sleep duration and obesity among children in urban Guangzhou, China is limited. This study aims to examine the relationship between sleep duration and obesity in children aged 6–18 years. Methods The sample consisted of 11,830 children aged 6–18 years. The children were randomly selected from 13 schools in three urban districts of Guangzhou. The study was conducted from September to November 2013. The height and weight of the children were measured. Adiposity status was estimated using body mass index and according to the cut point in China criteria. In the structured questionnaire, children reported daily sleep hours (less than 7 h, 7–9 h and more than 9 h), weekly food intake amount (including vegetables, fruit, sugar beverages and meat), physical activity and sedentary time. A caretaker would answer the questionnaire on behalf of a child aged below nine. Results A total of 8,760 children (49.0 % boys) completed the study. The prevalence of obesity was 8.4 % (9.8 % in boys and 5.7 % in girls). Adjusted for age, diet and physical activity/sedentary behaviour, the odds ratio (OR) for obesity comparing sleeping <7 h (short sleep duration, SSD) with ≥9 h (long sleep duration, LSD) was 0.70 (95 % CI: 0.69–0.72) among boys and 1.73 (95 % CI: 1.71–1.74) among girls. Stratified by age, OR for boys aged 6–12 years comparing SSD with LSD was 0.60 (95 % CI: 0.55–0.66); by contrast, OR was 1.33 (95 % CI: 1.30–1.37) for boys aged 13–18 years. Conclusion Short sleep duration is associated with increased chances of obesity among girls and 13- to 18-year-old boys, but the chances of obesity are decreased among 6- to 12-year-old boys. Age and gender should be regarded as specific characteristics for the effects of short sleep on obesity.
