Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the relationship between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome in obese children.METHODS:Sleep time was recorded and metabolic syndrome (MS) diagnostic criteria as blood pressure, body mass index (BMI) were measured among 311 obese children. The children were divided into 4 groups by sleep time while normal-weight children served as the control group. A disorderly multi-classification logistic regression method was used.RESULTS:Statistically, significant differences were found in the levels of BMI, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose and postprandial 2 h glucose and the incidence rates of abnormality on MS, blood pressure, fasting insulin, and BMI >/= 30 kg/m(2) between the group with daily sleep time less than 8 h and the group with daily sleep time no less than 10 h (P < 0.05). Date from logistic regression analysis revealed that the reduction of sleep time was the risk factor of MS in obese children.CONCLUSION:Insufficient sleep could greatly contribute to the occurrence of MS in obese children.

Abstract:Healthy sleep is vital for maintaining optimal mental and physical health. Accumulating evidence suggests that sleep loss and disturbances play a significant role in the biological aging process, early onset of disease, and reduced lifespan. While numerous studies have explored the association between biological aging and its drivers, only a few studies have examined its relationship with sleep quality. In this study, we investigated the associations between sleep quality and epigenetic age acceleration using whole blood samples from a cohort of 692 Korean adults. Sleep quality of each participant was assessed using the validated Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), which encompassed seven domains: subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep disturbance, use of sleep medication, and daytime dysfunction. Four epigenetic age accelerations (HorvathAgeAccel, HannumAgeAccel, PhenoAgeAccel, and GrimAgeAccel) and the pace of aging, DunedinPACE, were investigated for epigenetic aging estimates.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Insufficient sleep and circadian disruption are known modifiable risk factors for obesity. Chronotype reflects an individual's preferences in sleep timing and behaviors. This study examined the association between sleep characteristics and common obesity indicators, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), according to chronotype in Korean adults. Methods This study used data from the Korean Medicine Daejeon Citizen Cohort study of 2,000 participants in their 30s to 50s from 2017 to 2019. The survey examined several sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. Sleep characteristics including time, quality, latency, and efficiency were investigated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire. Chronotype was classified into morning (M), evening (E), and intermediate types based on single nucleotide polymorphisms in insomnia-related genes such as SYCE1L, IP6K3, PLCL1, APOE, and DPP3. Anthropometric measurements of BMI and WC were performed to assess obesity indices. General linear model adjusted for sex and age was performed to determine association between sleep and obesity index according to morning and evening types. Results Among the total 2,000 participants, the chronotype distribution was 5.3% morning type, 9.5% evening type, and 85.2% intermediate type. The evening type tended to have shorter sleep time (M: 6.75, E: 6.66 hr), poor sleep quality (M: 4.55, E: 4.68 score), longer sleep latency (M 19.7, E: 22.5 min), and low sleep efficiency(M: 95.1, E: 94.7%) than the morning type, but there was no statistically significant difference. The WC and BMI of the morning and evening types were similar. Morning type was associated with long sleep latency and increased WC (B= 0.12, 95% CI= 0.01 – 0.22, p=0.01). However, there was no association between them in the evening type. Additionally, morning types, being married and having less physical activity were associated with increased WC. Male was associated with increased WC and BMI, regardless of morning and evening types. Conclusion This study has demonstrated that the associations between sleep status and obesity indicators may vary in Korean middle-aged adults depending on chronotype, especially morning type. Future study will be needed on the causality between obesity considering chronotype, sleep status, and general characteristics. Support (if any)

Longitudinal association between sleep and 5-year incident metabolic syndrome in older Chinese adults: a community-based cohort study

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Purpose</h3><p>Our aim was to investigate the association between sleep and the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Chinese older adults and to accumulate evidence for the prevention of MetS through sleep management.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>This prospective study followed 3005 participants aged over 60 derived from the Weitang Geriatric Diseases Study who were without MetS at baseline. MetS was defined according to the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria. Logistic regression models were fit to assess the association between sleep and MetS incident and a linear regression model was used to examine the impact of sleep duration on every component of MetS. Data on sleep-related parameters were obtained based on a self-reported questionnaire.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>After 5-year follow-up, 13.51% participants developed MetS, of which 46.86% were women. The incidence of MetS was highest among adults who slept 6 hours or less and lowest among those who slept 7 hours after adjusted for multiple variables. Subgroup analyses showed no gender specificity. The variation of fasting plasma glucose (FBG) for ≥9 hours per night was significantly lower than that for 7.01-7.99 hours per night (β=-0.18, P<0.05). Sleeping for 8-8.99 hours also decreased the variation of diastolic blood pressure (DBP) compared to 7.01-7.99 hours (β=-0.84, P<0.05).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3><p>We conclude that both short and long sleep duration are risk factors for MetS incident in older adults.</p>

Abstract:Background Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is a common health problem among older adults. Previous studies have revealed the relationship between sleep duration as well as global sleep status and MetS. Objectives This study aims to examine the association between the specific sleep characteristic and MetS as well as MetS components among community-dwelling old adults. Methods This cross-sectional study included 1499 community residents aged ≥ 60 years. Sleep characteristics were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and bed/rise time of the residents. Logistic regression analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used to examine the associations between sleep characteristics and MetS as well as MetS components. A generalized additive model was built to assess the smooth relationship between triglyceride (TG) levels and sleep duration. Results Of the 1499 participants, 449 (30.0%) had MetS, and 443 (29.6%) had poor sleep quality. The rise time was found to be associated with MetS (> 6:00 vs. 5:00 ~ 6:00: adjusted OR (95%) = 1.77 (1.17–2.69), P = 0.007). For the MetS components, a U-shaped relationship was first revealed for sleep duration and TG levels (EDF = 1.85, P < 0.001). Furthermore, significant associations also included the associations of subjective sleep quality and daytime dysfunction with hypertension, the associations of sleep efficiency and rise time with hyperglycemia, the associations of rise time with TG levels, and the association of bedtime with waist circumference. Conclusions The different sleep characteristics were associated with different MetS components.

Abstract:Background: Research suggests sleep duration can influence metabolic systems including glucose homeostasis, blood pressure, hormone regulation, nervous system activity, and total energy expenditure (TEE), all of which are related to cardiometabolic disease risk, even in young adults. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome severity scores (MSSS) in a sample of emerging adults (18-24 y/o). Methods: Data were collected between 2012 and 2021 from the College Health and Nutrition Assessment Survey, an ongoing, cross-sectional study conducted at a midsized northeastern university. Anthropometric, biochemical, and clinical measures were obtained following an overnight fast and used to assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS). MetS severity scores (MSSS) were calculated using race- and sex-specific formulas. Sleep duration was calculated from the difference in self-reported bedtime and wake time acquired through an online survey. ANCOVA was used to examine the relationship between sleep duration and MetS severity score while adjusting for covariates (age, sex, BMI, physical activity level, smoking status, alcohol consumption, and academic major). Results: In the final sample (n = 3816), MetS (≥3 criteria) was present in 3.3% of students, while 15.4% of students presented with ≥2 MetS criteria. Mean MSSS was -0.65 ± 0.56, and the reported sleep duration was 8.2 ± 1.3 h/day. MSSS was higher among low sleepers (<7 h/day) and long sleepers (>9 h/day) compared to the reference sleepers (7-8 h/day) (-0.61 ± 0.02 and -0.63 ± 0.01 vs. -0.7 ± 0.02, respectively, p < 0.01). Conclusions: Our findings suggest short (<7 h/day) and long (>9 h/day) sleep durations raise the risk of MetS in a sample of emerging adults. Further research is needed to elucidate the impact of improving sleep habits on future disease risk.

Abstract:Background: We aimed to assess the association of sleep with metabolic syndrome in the 2013/2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Methods: Sample size included 2737 out of 2013 and 2014 NHANES surveys. Cross-sectional study of metabolic syndrome and sleep duration was conducted. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to NCEP ATPIII (National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III) criteria. Metabolic syndrome severity score was calculated based on actual measurement of each component, adjusted for sex and race. The generalized additive model (GAM) was built to assess the smooth relationship between metabolic syndrome/metabolic syndrome severity score and sleep duration. Adjustment of models were done for age, sex, race, and sitting time. The value of effective degree of freedom (EDF) formed by the GAM model shows the degree of curvature of the relationship. A value of 1 for EDF is translated as the linear shape of relationship. Values larger than one denote a more complex relationship between the response variable and the predicting one. Results: There was a U-shaped association between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome in univariable GAM (EDF = 2.43, p = 0.06) and multivariable GAM (EDF = 2.03, p = 0.20). The lowest risk of metabolic syndrome was observed in people sleeping 7 hours/night. There was a significant U-shaped association between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome severity score in multivariable GAM (EDF = 2.94, p = 0.0004). Similarly, the lowest mean metabolic syndrome severity score was observed in people sleeping 7 hours/night. There was an effect modification of sex and sleep duration indicating strong U-shaped relationship of metabolic syndrome severity score and sleep duration in women (EDF = 3.43, p = 0.00002) and semi-linear association in men (EDF = 1.76, p = 0.04). Conclusion: Short and long sleep duration was associated with higher risk of metabolic syndrome and higher scores of metabolic syndrome severity score in women. Short sleep duration was associated with higher risk of metabolic syndrome and higher scores of metabolic syndrome severity score in men.

The association of cardiometabolic disorders with sleep duration: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Alterations in sleep duration and quality are linked to the development of cardiovascular risk factors and the metabolic syndrome (MetS). The aim of this study was to determine a sex stratified analysis on the role and associations of sleep duration on cardiometabolic risk factors, and the MetS. Methods: Data from 1375 randomly selected participants (15-64 years) was collected for demographic, anthropometric, blood pressure and biochemistry data after overnight fasting, and derangements diagnosed according to published guidelines. Analysis of association between the MetS (harmonised criteria modified for South Asians), sleep duration (self-reported for a 24-hour period), and cardiometabolic risk factors was done using stepwise logistic regression. Results: The BMI, waist circumference (WC), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein were higher (p< 0.05) in subjects who slept <6 hours, with lower HDL. Under 6 hours of sleep was independently associated with raised FPG in men (OR 1.71 95% CI [1.53,5.52]) only. More than 10 hours of sleep was independently associated with increased triglyceride levels in men (1.72[0.56, 5.23]) and women (2.25[1.93,5.42]). Conclusion: The individual components of the Mets, particularly, increased triglycerides and blood glucose are associated with sleep deprivation or excess.
Interactive Association of Sleep Duration and Sleep Quality with the Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome in Adult Chinese Males

Abstract:The present study aimed to examine the separate and combined association of self-reported sleep duration and quality with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adult Chinese males. A total of 4,144 subjects were enrolled in the present crossed-sectional study. All participants were subjected to anthropometric measurements, blood tests and a survey based on a standardized questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the influence of sleep duration and quality on the prevalence of MetS. The group that had 7 h of sleep had the best results as compared with those with shorter or longer sleep durations, and the prevalence of MetS was the lowest in this group. In addition, poor vs. good sleep quality was associated with an increased risk of MetS. Further analysis suggested that sleep duration and quality had an additive effect on the prevalence of MetS. In conclusion, sleep duration as well as quality should be considered when exploring the potential association between sleep and other conditions.

Abstract:An optical technique for observing transitions between stable levels of negative ions is described and illustrated by the observation of microwave Zeeman transitions in trapped negative sulfur ions. State-selective photodetachment is used to prepare and probe the magnetic states of the trapped ions while applied microwave fields cause transitions between the states. These Zeeman transitions are the first reported observations of microwave transitions in a negative ion by a readily generalized technique.

Abstract:The study aimed to explore the association between sleep duration, insomnia symptoms and the components of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among middle-aged and older adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted in five community health centers and physical check-up centers of two comprehensive hospitals in Guangdong. We recruited 1252 participants (658 female), aged 40–96 years and with a body mass index (BMI) of 16.26–35.56 kg/m2. MetS was assessed based on the guidelines of the International Diabetes Federation. Self-reported sleep duration was evaluated by a simplified questionnaire. Compared with the participants who slept 6–8 h/day, those who slept shorter ( 8 h/day) periods of time with or without insomnia symptoms had significantly increased odds ratios (ORs) of high blood pressure (except for the SBP in model 2) and high triglycerides (TGs) in all models (p 8 h/day) or shorter (<6 h/day) periods of time with insomnia symptoms had significantly increased ORs of low HDL-C in all models (p < 0.05), but non-significant in those without insomnia symptoms. BMI is significant for insomnia symptoms but not for sleep duration. Our study indicated that the association of sleep duration with MetS components was partially associated with insomnia symptoms. These findings have significant implications to explore the appropriate sleep duration for adults.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to assess the sleep status of middle-aged and elderly adults in Bengbu City, Anhui Province, China, to identify the major dietary patterns, and to analyze the association of different sleep duration and dietary patterns with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its related influencing factors, as well as to explore the predictive value of sleep duration and dietary patterns. A cross-sectional analysis was performed utilizing data collected from the Community-based Cardiovascular and Health Promotion Study 2019 (COCHPS 2019) conducted in Bengbu. The definition of MetS adhered to the criteria of Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Dyslipidemia in Chinese Adults (2016 Revision). Dietary information was obtained using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) to assess dietary intake over the past year. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to identify dominant dietary patterns. A logistic regression model was developed to analyze the associations among sleep duration, dietary patterns, and MetS, and a decision tree (DT) model was developed to compare factors affecting MetS and screen people at high risk for MetS. The prevalence of MetS was 13.4% among the 9132 middle-aged and elderly residents over 45 years of age included in COCHPS 2019. Participants were divided into short ( 8 h/d) groups based on their daily sleep duration. Three dietary patterns were identified by PCA, the fruit-milk pattern, the tubers-meat pattern, and the vegetable-cereal pattern. After adjusting for covariables, logistic regression analysis showed that long sleep duration was significantly negatively associated with MetS. The fruit-milk and vegetable-cereal patterns were negatively associated with MetS, whereas the tubers-meat pattern was positively correlated with MetS. The results of the DT model analysis showed that the vegetable-cereal pattern is the most important factor impacting MetS, followed by marital status, the tubers-meat pattern, the fruit-milk pattern, exercise, sleep duration, and gender. The DT model also screened out five types of MetS high-risk groups. The results of our study indicate that normal sleep duration and consumption of either a fruit-milk or vegetable-cereal diet may lower the likelihood of developing MetS in middle-aged and elderly adults.

Abstract:<h2 class="section-title u-h3 u-margin-l-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Summary</h2><p>We examined the association between self-reported sleep duration and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Data were collected from 36 cross-sectional and 9 longitudinal studies with a total of 164799 MetS subjects and 430895 controls. Odds Ratios (ORs) for prevalent MetS and risk ratios (RRs) for incident MetS were calculated through meta-analyses of adjusted data from individual studies. Short sleep duration was significantly associated with increased prevalent MetS (OR=1.11, 95% CI =1.05-1.18) and incident MetS (RR= 1.28, 95% CI =1.07-1.53,) in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, respectively. Furthermore, long sleep duration was significantly associated with increased prevalent MetS in cross-sectional studies (OR= 1.14, 95% CI =1.05-1.23), but not incident MetS (RR= 1.16, 95% CI =0.95-1.41) in longitudinal studies. Interestingly, the association between long sleep and prevalent MetS was found in sleep duration defined by 24-hour sleep (including naps) rather than nighttime sleep. Our findings suggest 1) a "U-shape" relationship between sleep duration and MetS in cross-sectional studies and 2) association between short sleep duration, but not long sleep duration with incident MetS. Future studies should shed light on the underlying mechanisms related to the association between sleep duration and MetS and examine if normalizing sleep duration reduces MetS risk in the general population.</p>

Abstract:Lifestyle factors, including sleep characteristics, have been implicated in the development of metabolic syndrome, particularly among shift workers. This study aimed to explore the relationship between shift work, sleep duration, social jetlag, and the risk of metabolic syndrome among U.S. workers and the moderating effect of sleep duration and social jetlag on this relationship. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 2017–2020 March were analyzed. Poisson regression models were employed to examine associations. Among 4136 U.S. workers, 53.3% had metabolic syndrome, with a higher proportion of shift workers (63.8% vs. 56.7%, p = 0.001) and those sleeping less than 6 h or more than 9 h per week (22.3% vs. 19.1%, p = 0.044) in the affected group. Shift workers were initially found to have an increased risk of metabolic syndrome (Coef. = 0.03, 95% CI: 0.02, 0.16); however, this association was mitigated when accounting for the interaction with social jetlag. Specifically, 1 to <2 h of social jetlag interacted significantly, increasing metabolic risk (Coef. = 0.15, 95% CI: 0.09, 0.22), whereas 1 to <2 h alone showed a protective effect (Coef. = −0.11, 95% CI: −0.17, −0.06). These findings suggest that optimizing sleep schedules and addressing social jetlag may be crucial in mitigating metabolic syndrome risks among shift workers.

The objective of this study was to investigate the association between sleep duration, mental health, and chronic disease prevalence in Koreans.MethodsOf 31,596 subjects eligible for the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey V (2010–2012), 17,638 participants who answered items on sleep duration (aged ≥19 yrs) were analyzed in a cross-sectional study. Association between sleep duration, mental health, and chronic disease prevalence was assessed using logistic regression, and adjusted for various socioeconomic and lifestyle characteristics.ResultsShort or long sleep duration showed correlations with mental health, and items of significance showed gender-specific patterns. Women displayed significant associations with stress and depressive symptoms, and men with stress, thoughts of suicide, and psychiatric counseling. While stress was related with short sleep duration in both genders, depressive symptoms showed a relationship with long duration in men, and short duration in women. Prevalence of any chronic disease was associated with ≤6 h sleep when adjusted for factors including mental health, and among chronic diseases, cancer and osteoarthritis showed associations with short sleep duration, while diabetes and dyslipidemia were associated with normal sleep duration.ConclusionsMental health problems were associated with sleep duration with gender-specific patterns. Associations with osteoarthritis, cancer, diabetes, dyslipidemia and abnormal sleep duration persisted after adjustment for mental health.

Factors influencing sleep duration among middle-aged women in Korea: insights from the community health survey

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the influence of demographic and health-related characteristics on sleep duration among middle-aged women aged 44–64. Utilizing raw data from the 2022 Community Health Survey, a cross-sectional analysis was conducted. The study included middle-aged women who participated in the survey, with data collected through structured interviews. χ2 tests and logistic regression analysis were employed to assess associations between sleep duration and demographic as well as health-related factors. The findings revealed that sleep duration in middle-aged women was significantly associated with multiple factors. Age ( p < .001), spouse status ( p = .001), occupation ( p < .001), self-rated health ( p = .004), perceived stress ( p < .001), depression ( p < .001), cognitive impairment ( p = .009), unmet medical needs ( p = .034), current cigarette smoking ( p = .001), and binge drinking ( p = .006) were all identified as important determinants of sleep duration. The results highlight the need for targeted interventions that address both health and psychological risk factors contributing to sleep disturbances among middle-aged women. An integrated approach, considering these factors, is essential to improve sleep health in this vulnerable population.

Association of insomnia and daytime napping with metabolic syndrome and its components in a Korean population: an analysis of data from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study

Abstract:Objectives: We investigated the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and the coexistence of insomnia and daytime napping, because limited data have been reported regarding this association.Methods: The study population was 8,440 participants aged 40-65 years, who were from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. Self-reported information on insomnia symptoms and nap duration was used to define exposure variables. Data on waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP), and fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglyceride (TG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in blood were used to define MetS. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to obtain odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI).Results: In multivariate logistic regression analysis, the coexistence of insomnia and napping was not significantly associated with MetS. However, the insomnia and non-napping group showed higher ORs of high TG (OR=1.19; 95% CI, 1.02-1.39) and high BP (OR=1.28; 95% CI, 1.10-1.49) than the non-insomnia and non-napping group. The combination of non-insomnia and napping and that of insomnia and napping showed higher ORs of high TG (OR=1.13; 95% CI, 1.00-1.29) and high FBG (OR=1.59; 95% CI, 1.14-2.21), respectively. In analyses of insomnia symptoms, only the combination of difficulty in maintaining sleep (DMS) and non-napping showed a higher OR for MetS (OR=1.25; 95% CI, 1.03-1.52) than the non-DMS and non-napping group.Conclusion: Individuals with insomnia, particularly those who do not take naps, were disproportionately likely to have MetS components, especially TG or BP. Information on these variables may help predict individuals' vulnerability to specific MetS components.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Sleep patterns have been linked to various heath disease. Evaluating population-level trend of sleep could provide a comprehensive population health-forecasting model that has the potential to inform targeted interventions. Therefore, we aimed to examine the cross-sectional differences in sleep characteristics among Korean adults during a 9-year period of 2009-2018. Methods The data in this study were derived from two nationwide survey regarding sleep and headache in the representative sample of Korean adult population, namely the Korean Sleep Headache Study phase I (2009) and II (2018). The survey was conducted through door-to-door visit and face-to-face interview by using structured questionnaires. Total of 2,836 participants from Phase I (47.9±16.4 years old; female, 50.2%) and 2,501 participants (47.9±16.4 years old; female, 50.3%) from Phase II gave informed consents and completed the survey. For this study, we excluded those who worked as shift workers and missing data. From the MCTQ, we collected participants’ sleep schedule during workdays and free days over the past four weeks. Average sleep duration was a weighted mean of sleep duration on workdays and free days. Poor sleep quality was defined as PSQI >5. Excessive daytime sleepiness and Depression are performed with ESS and PHQ-9, respectively. Results During the 9 years, average sleep duration decreased by 21 minutes, especially more reduction on free days (workday: 7:17±1:58 vs. 7:06±1:06, p <0.001; free days 8:04±2:32 vs. 7:49±1:23, p <0.001). People go to sleep and wake up earlier on workday (workday 23:39±1:50 vs. 23:25±1:30, p <0.001; free days 23:51±2:11 vs. 23:25±2:11, p <0.001), whereas they go to bed earlier and wake up later on free days compared to past (workday 6:52±1:36 vs. 6:37±1:11, p <0.001; 7:42±2:04 vs. 7:49±1:42 p =0.023). Social jetlag was increased by 5 minutes (0:46±1:35 vs. 0:51±0:52, p =0.028). There was the difference of age on the habitual sleep-wake rhythm and sleep related symptoms. Also, short or long sleep duration was associated with a significant increase in each health outcomes. Conclusion Decreased sleep duration seems to be on the rise in the general adult population, which lead to a poor health status. Interventions to promote adequate sleep is urgently needed.
