Abstract:Nitrate-containing industrial wastewater poses a serious threat to the global food security and public health safety. As compared to the traditional microbial denitrification, electrocatalytic nitrate reduction shows better sustainability with ultrahigh energy efficiency and the production of high-value ammonia (NH3). However, nitrate-containing wastewater from most industrial processes, such as mining, metallurgy, and petrochemical engineering, is generally acidic, which contradicts the typical neutral/alkaline working conditions for both denitrifying bacteria and the state-of-the-art inorganic electrocatalysts, leading to the demand for pre-neutralization and the problematic hydrogen evaluation reaction (HER) competition and catalyst dissolution. Here, we report a series of Fe2M (M=Fe, Co, Ni, Zn) trinuclear cluster metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that enable the highly efficient electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonium under strong acidic conditions with excellent stability. In pH=1 electrolyte, the Fe2Co-MOF demonstrates the NH3 yield rate of 20653.5 mu g h(-1) mg(site)(-1) with 90.55 % NH3-Faradaic efficiency (FE), 98.5 % NH3-selectivity and up to 75 hr of electrocatalytic stability. Additionally, successful nitrate reduction in high-acidic conditions directly produce the ammonium sulfate as nitrogen fertilizer, avoiding the subsequent aqueous ammonia extraction and preventing the ammonia spillage loss. This series of cluster-based MOF structures provide new insights into the design principles of high-performance nitrate reduction catalysts under environmentally-relevant wastewater conditions.

Abstract:Nitrate is a stable and persistent pollutant, which is difficult to remove by water self-purification once contaminated with excessive nitrate. The electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia in wastewater has great practical significance and application prospects as the process can convert pollutants into useful industrial raw materials. Cu/Fe 2D bimetallic metal-organic frameworks were synthesized by a facile method applied as cathode materials. Bimetallic centers (Cu, Fe) with enhanced intrinsic activity demonstrated higher removal efficiency. Meanwhile, the 2D nanosheet reduced the mass transfer barrier between catalyst and nitrate and increased the reaction rate. Therefore, the catalysts with a 2D structure showed better removal efficiency in comparison with other structures (3D MOFs and Bulk MOFs). Under optimal conditions, the catalyst exhibited high nitrate removal efficiency (87.8%) and ammonium selectivity (89.3%). The ammonium yielded up to significantly 907.2 μg h -1 mg cat -1 with Faradaic efficiency of 62.8% at initial 100 mg L -1 NO 3 - -N. The catalyst was proved to have good stability and it was recycled 15 times with good effect. DFT simulations confirm the reduced Gibbs free energy of Cu/Fe-MOF.

Abstract:Ammonia production plays a central role in modern industry and agriculture with a continuous surge in its demand, yet the current industrial Haber–Bosch process suffers from low energy efficiency and accounts for high carbon emissions. Direct electrochemical conversion of nitrate to ammonia therefore emerges as an appealing approach with satisfactory sustainability while reducing the environmental impact from nitrate pollution. To this end, electrocatalysts for efficient conversion of eight-electron nitrate to ammonia require collective contributions at least from high-density reactive sites, selective reaction pathways, efficient multielectron transfer, and multiproton transport processes. Here, we report a catalytic metal–organic framework (two-dimensional (2D) In-MOF In8) catalyst integrated with multiple functional motifs with atomic precision, including uniformly dispersed, high-density, single-atom catalytic sites, high proton conductivity (efficient proton transport channel), high electron conductivity (promoted by the redox-active ligands), and confined microporous environments. These eventually lead to a direct and efficient electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia and record high yield rate, FE, and selectivity for NH3 production. A novel “dynamic ligand dissociation” mechanism provides an unprecedented working principle that allows for the use of a high-quality MOF crystalline structure to function as highly ordered, high-density, single-atom catalyst (SAC)-like catalytic systems and ensures the maximum utilization of the metal centers within the MOF structure. Further, the atomically precise assembly of multiple functional motifs within a MOF catalyst offers an effective and facile strategy for the future development of framework-based enzyme-mimic systems.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia represents a potential approach for the valorization of waste, offering the dual benefit of mitigating various environmental concerns and concurrently yielding the valuable product of ammonia. However, on the way to its further application, the lacking of low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts under low nitrate concentrations is still one pressing issue because of the intense hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) competition and many by-products. Herein, metal–organic frameworks (MOF) derived low-cost Cu-Co 3 O 4 /NF exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity in the low nitrate concentrations (2 mmol/L), attaining the ammonia yield rate of 0.076 mmol h −1 cm −2 and 92.4 % Faradic efficiency at −0.53 V vs. RHE. The combined results of In-situ FTIR and theoretical calculation reveal the atomic hydrogen reduction pathway, decrease in free energy of intermediate reactions and inhibition of HER of Cu-Co 3 O 4 /NF. This work introduces one economical, efficient and simple strategy and further demonstrates the superior effect of MOF derivatives in fascinating low nitrate concentration reduction to ammonia.

In Situ Construction of Metal–Organic Frameworks as Smart Channels for the Effective Electrocatalytic Reduction of Nitrate at Ultralow Concentrations to Ammonia

Abstract:Electrochemical conversion of nitrate, a widespread water pollutant, into high-value-added ammonia is a renewable and delocalized route to restore the globally perturbed nitrogen cycle. However, premature desorption of catalytic intermediates and the competitive reaction of hydrogen evolution make the current performance still far from suitable for practical applications. In this work, a Zr-based metal–organic framework (MOF) is in situ constructed at the reaction interface to serve as a smart channel for the highly selective electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia. The secondary coordination interaction introduced by the pendant Brønsted acidic groups of MOF not only effectively stabilize the catalytic intermediates to facilitate the overall reaction process but also certainly increase the proton activation barrier to suppress the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. When coupled with a nanocluster active center, the proof-of-concept system achieves simultaneous improvement in three critical parameters, with a nitrate conversion rate of 97.6%, an ammonia selectivity of 95.2%, and a Faradaic efficiency of 91.4% at −1.0 V (vs RHE) under ultralow nitrate concentration conditions. This strategy provides an interesting route for the application of MOFs and paves the way for the removal of nitrate and its reduction to ammonia.

Therefore, the method has received much attention. In this work, Cu/Fe 2D bimetallic metal-organic frameworks were synthesized by a facile method applied as cathode materials without high-temperature carbonization. Bimetallic centers (Cu, Fe) with enhanced intrinsic activity demonstrated higher removal efficiency. Meanwhile, the 2D nanosheet reduced the mass transfer barrier between the catalyst and nitrate and increased the reaction kinetics. Therefore, the catalysts with a 2D structure showed much better removal efficiency than other structures (3D MOFs and Bulk MOFs). Under optimal conditions, Cu/Fe-2D MOF exhibited high nitrate removal efficiency (87.8%) and ammonium selectivity (89.3%) simultaneously. The ammonium yielded up to significantly 907.2 µg/(hr·mgcat) (7793.8 µg/(hr·mgmetal)) with Faradaic efficiency of 62.8% at an initial 100 mg N/L. The catalyst was proved to have good stability and was recycled 15 times with excellent effect. DFT simulations confirm the reduced Gibbs free energy of Cu/Fe-2D MOF. This study demonstrates the promising application of Cu/Fe-2D MOF in nitrate reduction to ammonia and provides new insights for the design of efficient electrode materials.

Abstract:The pervasive contamination of industrial, domestic, and agricultural wastewater with nitrate poses profound ecological and public health risks. Traditional methods for remediating nitrate-laden water face formidable challenges due to its high solubility and stability. However, a promising solution emerges in the form of electrochemical nitrate reduction (eNO 3 RR), offering both efficient nitrate removal and valuable ammonia generation in a sustainable manner. This review explores the burgeoning field of eNO 3 RR, focusing on recent advancements utilizing porous crystalline framework materials − metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) − as a novel class of electrocatalysts. These innovative materials exhibit unique properties such as adjustable porosity, diverse structures, tunable pore sizes, and well-defined active sites, making them ideal candidates for enhancing the efficiency and selectivity of nitrate reduction under ambient conditions. By dissecting the structure–activity relationship inherent in MOF/COF-based electrocatalysts, this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of their role in driving the conversion of NO 3 − to NH 3 . Moreover, it identifies current challenges and proposes future prospects for leveraging these advanced materials in the sustainable conversion of nitrate pollutants, offering a glimpse into a greener and more effective approach to water remediation and resource recovery.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate represents a carbon-neutral approach to managing wastewater remediation while offering an innovative route for high-value green ammonia synthesis. However, nitrite byproduct is inevitably generated in the electrochemical process, which is more toxic to human beings and limits the conversion efficiency of nitrate to ammonia. Herein, a bimetallic metal–organic framework Ni x Cu (3− x ) (HITP) 2 (HITP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene) is proposed as both a cascade catalyst to eliminate the nitrite and a mechanism platform for the study of the cascade process for nitrate reduction. The bimetallic Ni x Cu (3− x ) (HITP) 2 platform shows that the Cu sites work as the active sites responsible for the conversion of nitrate to nitrite (NO 3 − + 2 e − → NO 2 − ). The byproduct NO 2 − has a tendency to adsorb at Ni sites and further convert to NH 3 (NO 2 − + 6 e − → NH 3 ). By integrating Cu and Ni active centers, the bimetallic MOF strategy synergizes the distinct reaction pathways on heterogeneous metal centers. As a result, compared with monometallic Cu 3 (HITP) 2 , the optimal Ni 1.5 Cu 1.5 (HITP) 2 achieved an outstanding NH 3 yield of 130.93 μmol h −1 cm −2 with dramatically enhanced NH 3 selectivity. This research elucidates the correlation between structure and activity in bimetallic active sites and cascade catalysis, which offers a high-efficiency nitrate-to-ammonia reduction.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) is an ideal carbon-free power source in the future sustainable hydrogen economy for growing energy demand. The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3-RR) is a promising approach for nitrate removal and NH3 production at ambient conditions, but efficient electrocatalysts are lacking. Here, we present a metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived cobalt-doped Fe@Fe2O3 (Co-Fe@Fe2O3) NO3-1RR catalyst for electrochemical energy production. This catalyst has a nitrate removal capacity of 100.8 mg N g(cat)(-1) h(-1) and an ammonium selectivity of 99.0 +/- 0.1%, which was the highest among all reported research. In addition, NH3 was produced at a rate of 1,505.9 mu g h(-1) cm(-2), and the maximum faradaic efficiency was 85.2 +/- 0.6%. Experimental and computational results reveal that the high performance of Co-Fe@Fe2O3 results from cobalt doping, which tunes the Fe d-band center, enabling the adsorption energies for intermediates to be modulated and suppressing hydrogen production. Thus, this study provides a strategy in the design of electrocatalysts in electrochemical nitrate reduction.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3-RR) is an important route for sustainable NH3 synthesis and environmental remediation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one family of promising NO3-RR electrocatalysts, however, there is plenty of room to improve in their performance, calling for new design principles. Herein, a MOF-on-MOF heterostructured electrocatalyst with interfacial dual active sites and build-in electric field is fabricated for efficient NO3-RR to NH3 production. By growing Co-HHTP (HHTP=2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) nanorods on Ni-BDC (BDC=1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) nanosheets, experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate the formation of Ni-O-Co bonds at the interface of MOF-on-MOF heterostructure, leading to dual active sites tailed for NO3-RR. The Ni sites facilitate the adsorption and activation of NO3-, while the Co sites boost the H2O decomposition to supply active hydrogen (Hads) for N-containing intermediates hydrogenation on adjacent Ni sites, cooperatively reducing the energy barriers of NO3-RR process. Together with the accelerated electron transfer enabled by built-in electric field, remarkable NO3-RR performance is achieved with an NH3 yield rate of 11.46 mg h-1 cm-2 and a Faradaic efficiency of 98.4%, outperforming most reported MOF-based electrocatalysts. This work provides new insights into the design of high-performance NO3-RR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction is an efficient way to produce ammonia sustainably. Herein, we rationally designed a copper metalloporphyrin-based hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF-Cu) through molecular engineering strategies for electrochemical nitrate reduction. As a result, the state-of-the-art HOF-Cu catalyst exhibits high NH3 Faradaic efficiency of 93.8%, and the NH3 production rate achieves a superior activity of 0.65 mmol h-1 cm-2. The in situ electrochemical spectroscopic combined with density functional theory calculations reveals that the dispersed Cu promotes the adsorption of NO3- and the mechanism is followed by deoxidation of NO3- to *NO and accompanied by deep hydrogenation. The generated *H participates in the deep hydrogenation of intermediate with fast kinetics as revealed by operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and the competing hydrogen evolution reaction is suppressed. This research provides a promising approach to the conversion of nitrate to ammonia, maintaining the nitrogen balance in the atmosphere.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of nitrate into ammonia has lately been identified as one among the promising solutions to address the challenges triggered by the growing global energy demand. Exploring newer electrocatalyst materials is vital to make this process effective and feasible. Recently, metal-organic framework (MOF)-based catalysts are being well investigated for electrocatalytic ammonia synthesis, accounting for their enhanced structural and compositional integrity during catalytic reduction reactions. In this study, we investigate the ability of the PCN-250-Fe3 MOF toward ammonia production in its pristine and activated forms. The activated MOF catalyst delivered a faradaic efficiency of about 90% at -1 V vs RHE and a yield rate of 2.5 × 10-4 mol cm-2 h-1, while the pristine catalyst delivered a 60% faradaic efficiency at the same potential. Theoretical studies further provide insights into the nitrate reduction reaction mechanism catalyzed by the PCN-250-Fe3 MOF catalyst. In short, simpler and cost-effective strategies such as pretreatment of electrocatalysts have an upper hand in aggravating the intrinsic material properties, for catalytic applications, when compared to conventional material modification approaches.

Abstract:Abstract The design and preparation of efficient catalysts for ammonia production under mild conditions is a desirable but highly challenging target. Here, we report a series of single-atom catalysts [M-SACs, M = Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Mo(II)] derived from UiO-66 containing structural defects and their application to electrochemical reduction of nitrate (NO 3 - ) to ammonia (NH 3 ). Cu-SAC and Fe-SAC exhibit remarkable yield rates for NH 3 production of 30.0 and 29.0 mg h −1 cm −2 , respectively, with a high Faradaic efficiency (FE NH3 ) of over 96% at −1.0 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. Importantly, their catalytic performance can be retained in various simulated wastewaters. Complementary experiments confirmed the nature of single-atom sites within these catalysts and the binding domains of NO 3 - in UiO-66-Cu. In situ spectroscopic techniques, coupled with density functional theory calculations confirm the strong binding of NO 3 - and the formation of reaction intermediates, thus facilitating the catalytic conversion to NH 3 .
Synergizing Fe2O3 nanoparticles on single atom Fe-N-C for nitrate reduction to ammonia at industrial current densities

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of oxidized nitrogen species enables a pathway for the carbon neutral synthesis of ammonia (NH3). The most oxidized form of nitrogen, nitrate (NO3-) can be reduced to NH3 via the nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR), which has been demonstrated at high selectivity. However, to make NH3 synthesis cost-competitive with current technologies, high NH3 partial current densities (jNH3) must be achieved to reduce the levelized cost of NH3. Here, we leverage the high NO3RR activity of Fe-based materials to synthesize a novel active particle-active support system with Fe2O3 nanoparticles supported on atomically dispersed Fe-N-C. By synergizing the activity of both nanoparticles and single atom sites, the optimized 3xFe2O3/Fe-N-C catalyst demonstrates an ultrahigh NO3RR activity, reaching a maximum jNH3 of 1.95 A cm-2 at a Faradaic efficiency (FE) for NH3 of 100% and an NH3 yield rate over 9 mmol hr-1 cm-2. Operando XANES and post-mortem XPS reveal the importance of a pre-reduction activation step, reducing the surface Fe2O3 (Fe3+) to highly active Fe0 sites, which are maintained during electrolysis, to realize the ultrahigh NO3RR activity. Durability studies demonstrate the robustness of both the Fe2O3 particles and Fe-Nx sites at highly cathodic potentials, maintaining a current of -1.3 A cm-2 over 24 hours, a near unity FENH3. This work exhibits an effective and durable active particle-active support system enhancing the performance of the NO3RR, enabling industrially relevant current densities and near 100% selectivity.

Abstract:Selective electrocatalytic conversion of NO3– to N2 is an environmental-friendly strategy to close the anthropogenic nitrogen-based cycle. This work reported a metal-organic framework-derived electrocatalyst with earth-abundant bimetallic sites, showing quantitative (~97.9% conversion) and selective (~99.3%) nitrate-to-N2 transformation. More importantly, both post-catalysis concentrations of NO3– and NO2– meet the drinking water limit requirements, set by World Health Organization. The reaction intermediates and mechanistic pathways in electrocatalytic reduction of NO3– to N2 are elucidated by a variety of in-situ experimental studies and DFT calculations. The enhanced and selective electrocatalytic performances are ascribed to the relay catalytic effects of the neighboring Fe-Ni catalytic sites residing in the porous carbon electrocatalysts, which are structurally determined by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) as well as calculated structural model, with Fe sites decreasing the reaction barrier for NO3– conversion and Ni centers facilitating the adsorption and activation of reaction intermediates (NO2–, NO* and N2O*).

Abstract:Removing nitrate from surface water is a constant challenge due to its high stability. While electrochemical treatment, a clean and renewable energy source, is promising, most strategies focus solely on energy conversion without considering treatment efficiency and practical application prospects. In this study, a Fe-based MOF derived material MC was synthesized by combining the process of hydrothermal and pyrolysis using Fe-MOF as the raw material to investigate the viability of nitrate reduction. The MC electrode exhibits 91.3 % NO 3 - removal and 44.9 % current efficiency in 180 min. The selectivity of ammonia is 90.6 % without Cl - and the selectivity of N 2 is 89.9 % with Cl - . The excellent behavior of MC is attributed to the layered structure of dispersed Fe-based nanocluster and interconversion of Fe three valence states, which are conducive to mass transfer and electron transfer, respectively. The Layered Fe-based electrode material MC is a cost-effective, high-efficiency and stabilized electrode catalyst capable of treating water in a wide pH range and broad hardness. It maintained excellent stability over ten cycles and was used to remove nitrate, TN, and COD from polluted surface water, proving to be an environmentally friendly option for the deep purification of polluted surface water.

Abstract:Abstract Electrochemically converting nitrate, a widespread water pollutant, back to valuable ammonia is a green and delocalized route for ammonia synthesis, and can be an appealing and supplementary alternative to the Haber-Bosch process. However, as there are other nitrate reduction pathways present, selectively guiding the reaction pathway towards ammonia is currently challenged by the lack of efficient catalysts. Here we report a selective and active nitrate reduction to ammonia on Fe single atom catalyst, with a maximal ammonia Faradaic efficiency of ~ 75% and a yield rate of up to ~ 20,000 μg h −1 mg cat. −1 (0.46 mmol h −1 cm −2 ). Our Fe single atom catalyst can effectively prevent the N-N coupling step required for N 2 due to the lack of neighboring metal sites, promoting ammonia product selectivity. Density functional theory calculations reveal the reaction mechanisms and the potential limiting steps for nitrate reduction on atomically dispersed Fe sites.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibited great potential in the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia (eNO 3 RR), but the structural transformation and the identification of the active sites in the electrochemical process have rarely been reported. Herein, a series of MOFs have been fabricated for eNO 3 RR. The Co-based MOF (Co-TPA) is selected as a representative for exploration through in - situ and ex - situ techniques to reveal the structural evolution during eNO 3 RR. The structural transformation from the Co-TPA to electrochemically activated catalyst (Co-TPA-E) is verified, and it is found that the in - situ formed high-valent Co species (CoOOH) are the active sites for eNO 3 RR. Moreover, the formation of the high-valence CoOOH species can be further facilitated by introducing highly electronegative Cu ions into the Co-TPA-E, resulting in excellent catalytic activity with an NH 3 yield rate of 1.12 mmol h −1 cm −2 at − 0.326 V vs. RHE and a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 99.62 %.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrate reduction can potentially enable the indirect fixation of atmospheric N2, as well as the efficient nitrate removal from industrial wastewater, which has attracted rapidly increasing attention over recent years. It is, however, limited by the lack of efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts available so far. To address this challenge, we here demonstrate a two-dimensional nickel porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (COF) as a potential candidate for the first time. The product has a highly ordered molecular structure with abundant square-shaped nanopores. In neutral solution, the reduction of nitrate ions at different concentrations to ammonia is realized with great selectivity of ~90% under mild overpotential, remarkable production rates up to 2.5 mg h-1 cm-2, turnover frequency up to 3.5 s-1, and intrinsic stability that is best delivered under pulse electrolysis. This cathodic reaction can also be coupled with the oxygen evolution reaction to permit full-cell electrolysis at high efficiency. Theoretical computations indicate that nickel centers can stably adsorb nitrate, and facilitate its subsequent reduction by lowering the energy barrier of the rate-determining step.
