Abstract:Dynamic light scattering studies of dense colloidal systems require special care due to problems of non-ergodicity and multiple scattering. We have combined a number of novel scattering techniques and developed a multi-speckle cross-correlation spectroscopy using a CCD chip as the detector. Cross correlation of pixels separated by a single scattering speckle length eliminates multiple scattering while averaging correlation functions from many speckles with approximately the same scattering wavevector performs the ensemble average. We use this technique to measure the phonons of a single hard sphere RHCP colloidal crystal which exhibits a well defined dispersion despite the complete anharmonicity of the interparticle potential. Abstract:Characterizing the nonlinear optical properties of various materials plays a prerequisite role in nonlinear optics. Among different methods, the well-known Z-scan technique and the modified versions have been recognized as a simple and accurate method for measuring both the real and imaginary parts of the nonlinear refractive index. However, all the Z-scan methods based on detecting small beam variations put forward a severe restriction on the roughness of materials. Therefore, measuring nonlinear optical properties of highly scattering media still remain challenging. Inspired by the innovation of conventional Z-scan method that converting the wavefront phase shift to the easily measurable spatial pattern in far-field, the alternative spectral domain Z-scan technique was presented in this paper. It has a great potential for highly scattering medium, based on the scattering efficiency is insensitive to the wavelength for Mie scattering as the wavelengths are far smaller than the roughness. Moreover, to demonstrate the advantages of spectral domain Z-scan technique, the nonlinear refraction of polished slides and frosted slides was measured, which agrees well with previous reports.

Abstract:The evolution of the light intensity along an optical waveguide is evaluated by analysing far-field right-angle Rayleigh light scattering. The method is based on point by point spectral mapping distributed along the optical waveguide with a micrometric spatial resolution given by a confocal microscope, a high spectral resolution given by a spectrometer, and a high signal-to-noise ratio given by a highly cooled detector. This non-destructive and non-invasive experimental method allows the observation of the general Rayleigh scattering profile of the optical waveguide in a nominal operation, i.e., whatever the power or the wavelength of the light source, and can be applied to micrometer-scale waveguides of several centimeters in length, for which the longitudinal characterization is challenging. Applied to a tapered optical fiber, called nanofiber, with submicrometer final diameter and several centimeters long, the method has proved its capacity to collect different optical characteristics such as optical losses, mode beatings, transition from core-cladding to cladding-air guidance for different modes, localization of punctual defects, leaking of high order modes no longer guided by the fiber. Furthermore, the experimental results are successfully compared to measurements provided by the state-of-the-art Optical Backscatter Reflectometer system, and to numerical simulations. Moreover, coupled to the spectral resolution of the spectrometer, the method have allowed the distributed measurements of the Raman cascading process along the nanofiber, for the first time to our knowledge. The experimental technique developed in this work is complementary to other characterization methods generally focused on the optical parameters of the waveguide input or output. This technique can also be extended to others waveguides whatever its geometry which represents a strong interest for deepen optical characterization of photonics waveguides, or for other optical regimes characterized by spectral evolution of the field propagating along the waveguide.
Modulated 3D cross-correlation light scattering: improving turbid sample characterization

Abstract:Accurate characterization using static light scattering (SLS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) methods mandates the measurement and analysis of singly-scattered light. In turbid samples, the suppression of multiple scattering is therefore required to obtain meaningful results. One powerful technique for achieving this, known as 3D cross-correlation, uses two simultaneous light scattering experiments performed at the same scattering vector on the same sample volume in order to extract only the single scattering information common to both. Here we present a significant improvement to this method in which the two scattering experiments are temporally separated by modulating the incident laser beams and gating the detector outputs at frequencies exceeding the timescale of the system dynamics. This robust modulation scheme eliminates cross-talk between the two beam- detector pairs and leads to a four-fold improvement in the cross-correlation intercept. We measure the dynamic and angular-dependent scattering intensity of turbid colloidal suspensions and exploit the improved signal quality of the modulated 3D cross-correlation DLS and SLS techniques.

Abstract:Imaging through scattering media is a significant challenge in computational imaging. Recently, a breakthrough technique based on speckle scanning was proposed with outstanding imaging performance. However, the dense angular scanning of the incident-laser beam leads to a lengthy scanning process. In this paper, we propose a method based on compressive sensing (CS) to accelerate the data acquisition process. A new imaging system is proposed which adopts mutually incoherent laser beams as light sources and the intensity of each beam is modulated to perform CS measurement. High-resolution fluctuation of the total fluorescence can be well reconstructed from CS measurements with the learned dictionary as basis function. Experimental results show-that the proposed method can reduce nearly 70 percent of the data acquisition complexity without impairing the imaging quality.

Abstract:Coherence scanning interferometry is a widely used optical topography measurement technique, which can achieve axial resolutions in the sub-nanometer regime. Nevertheless, in the lateral dimension it is inherently diffraction limited and multiple problems arise when approaching this limit. Especially for challenging surface topographies like steep slopes or small grating periods measurement artifacts start to cause massive deviations in the 3D reconstruction of the surface due to the increased influence of noise on increasingly weak signals. In this study we present an illumination approach for Linnik-type CSI, which highlights oblique incident angles of the illuminating light cone in high numerical aperture (0.95) systems. It is demonstrated, that this approach can significally improve the signal-to-noise ratio for measurements at steep surface slopes and therefore increase the subsequent surface reconstruction.

Abstract:We report a theoretical study of the Z-scan technique by using quasi-one-dimensional slit beams for characterizing third-order optical nonlinearity. We verify that the sensitivity of this Z-scan scheme is roughly the same level as top-hat beams and is greatly higher than Gaussian beams by a factor of approximately 2.5. This scheme should have the capability to measure less than a lambda/500 wave-front distortion at least. Numerical formulas obtained in theory allow direct estimation of nonlinear refraction and absorption coefficients from the normalized peak-valley transmittance difference measured. Some salient features are also discussed. This Z-scan scheme is also demonstrated experimentally. (C) 2004 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The Z-scan technique is a popular method for measuring optical nonlinearities using a single laser beam. We describe a simplified second Z-scan technique for cases where nonlinear refraction is accompanied by nonlinear absorption to separately evaluate the nonlinear refraction and the nonlinear absorption by performing straightforward measurement with the aperture removed. We divide the normalized transmittance of the closed aperture (S < 1) Z-scan by that of the open-aperture (S = 1) Z-scan. It is found that not only the ratio rho of the imaginary part chi(I)((3)) to the real part chi(R)((3)) of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility chi((3)) but also the linear transmittance S of the aperture has a great influence on the performance of the second Z-scan. Some useful results, which determine whether a second Z-scan can be performed or not, have been obtained for the rho dependence of the critical linear transmittance S-c of the aperture and S dependence of the critical ratio rho(c). These results may be applied to timely adjusted experimental conditions in order to obtain highly accurate data. We demonstrate this method on a CH3OH solution of Co2L3 with 7 ns laser pulses.

Abstract:Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is one of the most advanced optical measurement techniques for complex structure visualization. The advantages of OCT have been used for surface and subsurface defect detection in composite materials, polymers, ceramics, non-metallic protective coatings, and many more. Our research activity has been focused on timefrequency spectroscopic analysis in OCT. It is based on time resolved spectral analysis of the backscattered optical signal delivered by the OCT. The time-frequency method gives spectral characteristic of optical radiation backscattered or backreflected from the particular points inside the tested device. This provides more information about the sample, which are useful for further analysis. Nowadays, the applications of spectroscopic analysis for composite layers characterization or tissue recognition have been reported. During our studies we have found new applications of spectroscopic analysis. We have used this method for thickness estimation of thin films, which are under the resolution of OCT. Also, we have combined the spectroscopic analysis with polarization sensitive OCT (PS-OCT). This approach enables to obtain a multiorder retardation value directly and may become a breakthrough in PS-OCT measurements of highly birefringent media. In this work, we present the time-frequency spectroscopic algorithms and their applications for OCT. Also, the theoretical simulations and measurement validation of this method are shown.
Defocus-integration Interferometric Scattering Microscopy for Speckle Suppression and Enhancing Nanoparticle Detection on Substrate

Abstract:Direct optical detection and imaging of single nanoparticles on substrate in wide field underpin vast applications across different research fields. However, the speckles originating from the unavoidable random surface undulations of the substrate ultimately limit the size of the decipherable nanoparticles by the current optical techniques, including the ultrasensitive interferometric scattering microscopy (iSCAT). Here we report a defocus-integration iSCAT to suppress the speckle noise and to enhance the detection and imaging of single nanoparticles on ultra-flat glass substrate and silicon wafer. In particular, we discover distinct symmetry properties of the scattering phase between the nanoparticle and the surface undulations that cause the speckles. Consequently, we develop the defocus-integration technique to suppress the speckles.We experimentally achieve an enhancement of the signal to noise ratio by 6.9 dB for the nanoparticle detection. We demonstrate that the technique is generally applicable for nanoparticles of various materials and for both low and high refractive-index substrates.

Abstract:We present a new particle image correlation technique for resolving nanoparticle flow velocity using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The two primary issues that complicate nanoparticle scanning laser image correlation (SLIC) based velocimetry are (1) the use of diffusion dominated nanoparticles as flow tracers, which introduce a random decorrelating error into the velocity estimate, and (2) the effects of the scanning laser image acquisition, which introduces a bias error. To date, no study has quantified these errors or demonstrated a means to deal with them in SLIC velocimetry. In this work, we build upon the robust phase correlation (RPC) and existing methods of SLIC to quantify and mitigate these errors. First, we implement an ensemble RPC instead of using an ensemble standard cross correlation, and develop an SLIC optimal filter that maximizes the correlation strength in order to reliably and accurately detect the correlation peak representing the most probable average displacement of the nanoparticles. Secondly, we developed an analytical model of the SLIC measurement bias error due to image scanning of diffusion dominated tracer particles. We show that the bias error depends only on the ratio of the mean velocity of the tracer particles to that of the laser scanner and we use this model to correct the induced errors. We validated our technique using synthetic images and experimentally obtained SLIC images of nanoparticle flow through a micro-channel. Our technique reduced the error by up to a factor of ten compared to other SLIC algorithms for the images tested in this study. Moreover, our optimized RPC filter is reducing the number of image pairs required for the convergence of the ensemble correlation by two orders of magnitude compared to the standard cross correlation.

Abstract:Infrared and optical spectroscopy represents one of the most informative methods in advanced materials research. As an important branch of modern optical techniques that has blossomed in the past decade, scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) promises deterministic characterization of optical properties over a broad spectral range at the nanoscale. It allows ultrabroadband optical (0.5-3000 µm) nanoimaging, and nanospectroscopy with fine spatial (<10 nm), spectral (<1 cm<sup>-1</sup> ), and temporal (<10 fs) resolution. The history of s-SNOM is briefly introduced and recent advances which broaden the horizons of this technique in novel material research are summarized. In particular, this includes the pioneering efforts to study the nanoscale electrodynamic properties of plasmonic metamaterials, strongly correlated quantum materials, and polaritonic systems at room or cryogenic temperatures. Technical details, theoretical modeling, and new experimental methods are also discussed extensively, aiming to identify clear technology trends and unsolved challenges in this exciting field of research.

Advances in applications of time-domain Brillouin scattering for nanoscale imaging

Abstract:Time-domain Brillouin scattering is an all-optical experimental technique based on ultrafast lasers applied for generation and detection of coherent acoustic pulses on time durations of picoseconds and length scales of nanometers. In transparent materials scattering of the probe laser beam by the coherent phonons permits imaging of sample inhomogeneity. The transient optical reflectivity of the sample recorded by the probe beam as the acoustic nanopulse propagates in space contains information on the acoustical, optical, and acousto-optical parameters of the material under study. The experimental method is based on a heterodyning where weak light pulses scattered by the coherent acoustic phonons interfere at the photodetector with probe light pulses of significantly higher amplitude reflected from various interfaces of the sample. The time-domain Brillouin scattering imaging is based on Brillouin scattering and has the potential to provide all the information that researchers in material science, physics, chemistry, biology etc., get with classic frequency-domain Brillouin scattering of light. It can be viewed as a replacement for Brillouin scattering and Brillouin microscopy in all investigations where nanoscale spatial resolution is either required or advantageous. Here we review applications of time-domain Brillouin scattering for imaging of nanoporous films, ion-implanted semiconductors and dielectrics, texture in polycrystalline materials and inside vegetable and animal cells, and for monitoring the transformation of nanosound caused by nonlinearity and focusing. We also discuss the perspectives and the challenges for the future.

Abstract:A simple division of close-aperture Z-scan curve by open-aperture Z-scan is conveniently used to obtain the nonlinear refractive index. It usually causes an error, which even reaches up to over 50% for Z-scan measurements with a pinhole or a medium with a high nonlinear absorption. Here the influence of nonlinear absorption on the determination of nonlinear refraction by Z-scan is analysed. We suggest that the error can be reduced greatly by a simple analysis of the symmetric features (symmetric method) of Z-scan curves from the closed-aperture Z-scan curve. As an example, experiments were carried out on CS2 solution of C60 derivative, symmetric method agrees well with exact simulation.

Abstract:Herein we describe a novel spinning pump-probe photoacoustic technique developed to study nonlinear absorption in thin films. As a test case, an organic polycrystalline thin film of quinacridone, a well-known pigment, with a thickness in the tens of nanometers range, is excited by a femtosecond laser pulse which generates a time-domain Brillouin scattering signal. This signal is directly related to the strain wave launched from the film into the substrate and can be used to quantitatively extract the nonlinear optical absorption properties of the film itself. Quinacridone exhibits both quadratic and cubic laser fluence dependence regimes which we show to correspond to two- and three-photon absorption processes. This technique can be broadly applied to materials that are difficult or impossible to characterize with conventional transmittance-based measurements including materials at the nanoscale, prone to laser damage, with very weak nonlinear properties, opaque, or highly scattering.

Speckled-speckle field as a resource for imaging techniques

Abstract:Correlated states of light, both classical and quantum, can find useful applications in the implementation of several imaging techniques. Among the employed sources, pseudo-thermal states, generated by the passage of a laser beam through a diffuser, represent the standard choice. To produce light with a higher level of correlation, in this work we consider and characterize the speckled-speckle field obtained with two diffusers using both a numerical simulation and an experimental implementation. In order to discuss the potential usefulness of super-thermal light in imaging protocols, we analyze the behavior of some figures of merit, namely the contrast, the signal-to-noise ratio and the image resolution. The obtained results clarify the possible advantages offered by this kind of light, and at the same time better emphasize the reasons why it does not outperform pseudo-thermal light.

Precise characterization of nanometer-scale systems using interferometric scattering microscopy and Bayesian analysis

Abstract:Interferometric scattering microscopy (iSCAT) can image the dynamics of nanometer-scale systems. The typical approach to analyzing interferometric images involves intensive processing, which discards data and limits the precision of measurements. We demonstrate an alternative approach: modeling the interferometric point spread function (iPSF) and fitting this model to data within a Bayesian framework. This approach yields best-fit parameters, including the particle's three-dimensional position and polarizability, as well as uncertainties and correlations between these parameters. Building on recent work, we develop a model that is parameterized for rapid fitting. The model is designed to work with Hamiltonian Monte Carlo techniques that leverage automatic differentiation. We validate this approach by fitting the model to interferometric images of colloidal nanoparticles. We apply the method to track a diffusing particle in three dimensions, to directly infer the diffusion coefficient of a nanoparticle without calculating a mean-square displacement, and to quantify the ejection of DNA from an individual lambda phage virus, demonstrating that the approach can be used to infer both static and dynamic properties of nanoscale systems.

Abstract:The Z-scan technique is a popular method for measuring degenerate optical nonlinearities using a single laser beam. In cases where nonlinear refraction is accompanied by strong nonlinear absorption, we report an accurate analytic method for extracting nonlinear refraction from the closed aperture Z-scan transmittance curve with the aid of the open aperture Z-scan transmittance curve. This method possesses very high accuracy, especially, in the presence of strong nonlinear absorption and/or for the larger size aperture. This method is also demonstrated on a solution of Pd(mpo)(2) by the experiment.
