Abstract:Venous tumor invasion in 42 renal cell carcinomas was evaluated by MRI. A correct diagnosis of renal vein and inferior vena cava (IVC) involvement was made in 14 of 17 tumors: 1 false negative diagnosis of right renal vein invasion was due to a double renal vein in which the inferior vein (identified by MRI) was not involved; 2 cases of IVC involvement were understaged (1 case of suprahepatic extension) or not identified (the false negative of renal vein invasion previously described). One false positive (among 31 tumors without venous invasion) was reported in a case of a large tumor in which the compressed but free right renal vein was overevaluated by MRI.
Radiomic and deep learning analysis of dermoscopic images for skin lesion pattern decoding

Abstract:This study aims to explore the efficacy of a hybrid deep learning and radiomics approach, supplemented with patient metadata, in the noninvasive dermoscopic imaging-based diagnosis of skin lesions. We analyzed dermoscopic images from the International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) dataset, spanning 2016–2020, encompassing a variety of skin lesions. Our approach integrates deep learning with a comprehensive radiomics analysis, utilizing a vast array of quantitative image features to precisely quantify skin lesion patterns. The dataset includes cases of three, four, and eight different skin lesion types. Our methodology was benchmarked against seven classification methods from the ISIC 2020 challenge and prior research using a binary decision framework. The proposed hybrid model demonstrated superior performance in distinguishing benign from malignant lesions, achieving area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) scores of 99%, 95%, and 96%, and multiclass decoding AUROCs of 98.5%, 94.9%, and 96.4%, with sensitivities of 97.6%, 93.9%, and 96.0% and specificities of 98.4%, 96.7%, and 96.9% in the internal ISIC 2018 challenge, as well as in the external Jinan and Longhua datasets, respectively. Our findings suggest that the integration of radiomics and deep learning, utilizing dermoscopic images, effectively captures the heterogeneity and pattern expression of skin lesions.

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for Onychomycosis Detection

Abstract:The diagnosis of superficial fungal infections in dermatology is still mostly based on manual direct microscopic examination with Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) solution. However, this method can be time consuming and its diagnostic accuracy rates vary widely depending on the clinician's experience. With the increase of neural network applications in the field of clinical microscopy, it is now possible to automate such manual processes increasing both efficiency and accuracy. This study presents a deep neural network structure that enables the rapid solutions for these problems and can perform automatic fungi detection in grayscale images without dyes. 160 microscopic field photographs containing the fungal element, obtained from patients with onychomycosis, and 297 microscopic field photographs containing dissolved keratin obtained from normal nails were collected. Smaller patches containing 4234 fungi and 4981 keratin were extracted from these images. In order to detect fungus and keratin, VGG16 and InceptionV3 models were developed. The VGG16 model had 95.98% accuracy, and the area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.9930, while the InceptionV3 model had 95.90% accuracy and the AUC value of 0.9917. However, average accuracy and AUC value of clinicians is 72.8% and 0.87, respectively. This deep learning model allows the development of an automated system that can detect fungi within microscopic images.

Abstract:Background and aim: Melasma (ML), naevus fusco-caeruleus zygomaticus (NZ), freckles (FC), cafe-au-lait spots (CS), nevus of ota (NO), and lentigo simplex (LS), are common skin diseases causing hyperpigmentation. Deep learning algorithms learn the inherent laws and representation levels of sample data and can analyze the internal details of the image and classify it objectively to be used for image diagnosis. However, deep learning algorithms that can assist clinicians in diagnosing skin hyperpigmentation conditions are lacking. Methods: The optimal deep-learning image recognition algorithm was explored for the auxiliary diagnosis of hyperpigmented skin disease. Pretrained models, such as VGG-19, GoogLeNet, InceptionV3, ResNet50V2, ResNet101V2, ResNet152V2, InceptionResNetV2, DesseNet201, MobileNet, and NASNetMobile were used to classify images of six common hyperpigmented skin diseases. The best deep learning algorithm for developing an online clinical diagnosis system was selected by using accuracy and area under curve (AUC) as evaluation indicators. Results: In this research, the parameters of the above-mentioned ten deep learning algorithms were 18333510, 5979702, 21815078, 23577094, 42638854, 58343942, 54345958, 18333510, 3235014, and 4276058, respectively, and their training time was 380, 162, 199, 188, 315, 511, 471, 697, 101, and 144 min respectively. The respective accuracies of the training set were 85.94%, 99.72%, 99.61%, 99.52%, 99.52%, 98.84%, 99.61%, 99.13%, 99.52%, and 99.61%. The accuracy rates of the test set data were 73.28%, 57.40%, 70.04%, 71.48%, 68.23%, 71.11%, 71.84%, 73.28%, 70.39%, and 43.68%, respectively. Finally, the areas of AUC curves were 0.93, 0.86, 0.93, 0.91, 0.91, 0.92, 0.93, 0.92, 0.93, and 0.82, respectively. Conclusions: The experimental parameters, training time, accuracy, and AUC of the above models suggest that MobileNet provides a good clinical application prospect in the auxiliary diagnosis of hyperpigmented skin.
Deep Learning-Based Diagnosis Models for Onychomycosis in Dermoscopy.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Onychomycosis is a common disease. Emerging noninvasive, real-time techniques such as dermoscopy and deep convolutional neural networks have been proposed for the diagnosis of onychomycosis. However, deep learning application in dermoscopic images has not been reported.OBJECTIVES:To explore the establishment of deep learning-based diagnostic models for onychomycosis in dermoscopy to improve the diagnostic efficiency and accuracy.METHODS:We evaluated the dermoscopic patterns of onychomycosis diagnosed at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Guangzhou, China, from May 2019 to February 2021 and included nail psoriasis and traumatic onychodystrophy as control groups. Based on the dermoscopic images and the characteristic dermoscopic patterns of onychomycosis, we gain the faster region-based convolutional neural networks to distinguish between nail disorder and normal nail, onychomycosis and non-mycological nail disorder (nail psoriasis and traumatic onychodystrophy). The diagnostic performance is compared between deep learning-based diagnosis models and dermatologists.RESULTS:All of 1,155 dermoscopic images were collected, including onychomycosis (603 images), nail psoriasis (221 images), traumatic onychodystrophy (104 images) and normal cases (227 images). Statistical analyses revealed subungual keratosis, distal irregular termination, longitudinal striae, jagged edge, and marble-like turbid area, and cone-shaped keratosis were of high specificity (>82%) for onychomycosis diagnosis. The deep learning-based diagnosis models (ensemble model) showed test accuracy /specificity/ sensitivity /Youden index of (95.7%/98.8%/82.1%/0.809) and (87.5%/93.0%/78.5%/0.715) for nail disorder and onychomycosis. The diagnostic performance for onychomycosis using ensemble model was superior to 54 dermatologists.CONCLUSIONS:Our study demonstrated that onychomycosis had distinctive dermoscopic patterns, compared with nail psoriasis and traumatic onychodystrophy. The deep learning-based diagnosis models showed a diagnostic accuracy of onychomycosis, superior to dermatologists.
Efficient and accurate diagnosis of otomycosis using an ensemble deep-learning model

Abstract:Otomycosis accounts for over 15% of cases of external otitis worldwide. It is common in humid regions and Chinese cultures with ear-cleaning custom. Aspergillus and Candida are the major pathogens causing long-term infection. Early endoscopic and microbiological examinations, performed by otologists and microbiologists, respectively, are important for the appropriate medical treatment of otomycosis. The deep-learning model is a novel automatic diagnostic program that provides quick and accurate diagnoses using a large database of images acquired in clinical settings. The aim of the present study was to introduce a machine-learning model to accurately and quickly diagnose otomycosis caused by Aspergillus and Candida. We propose a computer-aided decision-making system based on a deep-learning model comprising two subsystems: Java web application and image classification. The web application subsystem provides a user-friendly webpage to collect consulted images and display the calculation results. The image classification subsystem mainly trained neural network models for end-to-end data inference. The end user uploads a few images obtained with the ear endoscope, and the system returns the classification results to the user in the form of category probability values. To accurately diagnose otomycosis, we used otoendoscopic images and fungal culture secretion. Fungal fluorescence, culture, and DNA sequencing were performed to confirm the pathogens Aspergillus or Candida spp. In addition, impacted cerumen, external otitis, and normal external auditory canal endoscopic images were retained for reference. We merged these four types of images into an otoendoscopic image gallery. To achieve better accuracy and generalization abilities after model-training, we selected 2,182 of approximately 4,000 ear endoscopic images as training samples and 475 as validation samples. After selecting the deep neural network models, we tested the ResNet, SENet, and EfficientNet neural network models with different numbers of layers. Considering the accuracy and operation speed, we finally chose the EfficientNetB6 model, and the probability values of the four categories of otomycosis, impacted cerumen, external otitis, and normal cases were outputted. After multiple model training iterations, the average accuracy of the overall validation sample reached 92.42%. The results suggest that the system could be used as a reference for general practitioners to obtain more accurate diagnoses of otomycosis.
A Deep Learning Based Framework for Diagnosing Multiple Skin Diseases in a Clinical Environment

Abstract:Background: Numerous studies have attempted to apply artificial intelligence (AI) in the dermatological field, mainly on the classification and segmentation of various dermatoses. However, researches under real clinical settings are scarce. Objectives: This study was aimed to construct a novel framework based on deep learning trained by a dataset that represented the real clinical environment in a tertiary class hospital in China, for better adaptation of the AI application in clinical practice among Asian patients. Methods: Our dataset was composed of 13,603 dermatologist-labeled dermoscopic images, containing 14 categories of diseases, namely lichen planus (LP), rosacea (Rosa), viral warts (VW), acne vulgaris (AV), keloid and hypertrophic scar (KAHS), eczema and dermatitis (EAD), dermatofibroma (DF), seborrheic dermatitis (SD), seborrheic keratosis (SK), melanocytic nevus (MN), hemangioma (Hem), psoriasis (Pso), port wine stain (PWS), and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). In this study, we applied Google's EfficientNet-b4 with pre-trained weights on ImageNet as the backbone of our CNN architecture. The final fully-connected classification layer was replaced with 14 output neurons. We added seven auxiliary classifiers to each of the intermediate layer groups. The modified model was retrained with our dataset and implemented using Pytorch. We constructed saliency maps to visualize our network's attention area of input images for its prediction. To explore the visual characteristics of different clinical classes, we also examined the internal image features learned by the proposed framework using t-SNE (t-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding). Results: Test results showed that the proposed framework achieved a high level of classification performance with an overall accuracy of 0.948, a sensitivity of 0.934 and a specificity of 0.950. We also compared the performance of our algorithm with three most widely used CNN models which showed our model outperformed existing models with the highest area under curve (AUC) of 0.985. We further compared this model with 280 board-certificated dermatologists, and results showed a comparable performance level in an 8-class diagnostic task. Conclusions: The proposed framework retrained by the dataset that represented the real clinical environment in our department could accurately classify most common dermatoses that we encountered during outpatient practice including infectious and inflammatory dermatoses, benign and malignant cutaneous tumors.

Abstract:Abstract Infectious keratitis refers to a group of corneal disorders in which corneal tissues suffer inflammation and damage caused by pathogenic infections. Among these disorders, fungal keratitis (FK) and acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) are particularly severe and can cause permanent blindness if not diagnosed early and accurately. In Vivo Confocal Microscopy (IVCM) allows for imaging of different corneal layers and provides an important tool for an early and accurate diagnosis. In this paper, we introduce the IVCM-Keratitis dataset, which comprises of a total of 4001 sample images of AK and FK, as well as non-specific keratitis (NSK) and healthy corneas classes. We use this dataset to develop multiple deep-learning models based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to provide automated assistance in enhancing the diagnostic accuracy of confocal microscopy in infectious keratitis. Densenet161 had the best performance among these models, with an accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score of 93.55%, 92.52%, 94.77%, and 96.93%, respectively. Our study highlights the potential of deep learning models to provide automated diagnostic assistance for infectious keratitis via confocal microscopy images, particularly in the early detection of AK and FK. The proposed model can provide valuable support to both experienced and inexperienced eye-care practitioners in confocal microscopy image analysis, by suggesting the most likely diagnosis. We further demonstrate that these models can highlight the areas of infection in the IVCM images and explain the reasons behind their diagnosis by utilizing saliency maps, a technique used in eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) to interpret these models.

Abstract:Skin diseases pose a significant health concern globally, with diverse manifestations and diagnostic challenges. Deep learning methods have shown impressive potential in medical image analysis. This project focuses on utilizing methods of deep learning techniques for the automated classification of skin diseases. Two popular convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures, InceptionV3 and VGG16, are trained and evaluated on a comprehensive dataset consisting of around 17,000 images across 13 classes, including the most prevalent skin diseases such as acne, urticaria, eczema, psoriasis and vascular disorders. The study incorporates image preprocessing techniques to enhance the quality and informativeness of input data. Additionally, we experiment with the dense layers of the models, exploring configurations that optimize classification accuracy. The study aims to compare the accuracies of these models and determine the most effective one for deployment in a web interface for skin disease diagnosis. The proposed model, achieving a training accuracy of 80.88% for InceptionV3 and 74.17% accuracy for VGG16, demonstrates its potential as an effective instrument for healthcare providers and individuals, potentially aiding in the timely diagnosis and management of various skin diseases.

Skin Lesion Diagnosis Using Convolutional Neural Networks

Abstract:Cancerous skin lesions are one of the most common malignancies detected in humans, and if not detected at an early stage, they can lead to death. Therefore, it is crucial to have access to accurate results early on to optimize the chances of survival. Unfortunately, accurate results are typically obtained by highly trained dermatologists, who may not be accessible to many people, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries. Artificial Intelligence (AI) appears to be a potential solution to this problem, as it has proven to provide equal or even better diagnoses than healthcare professionals. This project aims to address the issue by collecting state-of-the-art techniques for image classification from various fields and implementing them. Some of these techniques include mixup, presizing, and test-time augmentation, among others. Three architectures were used for the implementation: DenseNet121, VGG16 with batch normalization, and ResNet50. The models were designed with two main purposes. First, to classify images into seven categories, including melanocytic nevus, melanoma, benign keratosis-like lesions, basal cell carcinoma, actinic keratoses and intraepithelial carcinoma, vascular lesions, and dermatofibroma. Second, to classify images into benign or malignant. The models were trained using a dataset of 8012 images, and their performance was evaluated using 2003 images. It's worth noting that this model is trained end-to-end, directly from the image to the labels, without the need for handcrafted feature extraction.

Abstract:Traditionally, diagnosis and treatment of fungal infections in humans depend heavily on face-to-face consultations or examinations made by specialized laboratory scientists known as mycologists. In many cases, such as the recent mucormycosis spread in the COVID-19 pandemic, an initial treatment can be safely suggested to the patient during the earliest stage of the mycological diagnostic process by performing a direct examination of biopsies or samples through a microscope. Computer-aided diagnosis systems using deep learning models have been trained and used for the late mycological diagnostic stages. However, there are no reference literature works made for the early stages. A mycological laboratory in Colombia donated the images used for the development of this research work. They were manually labelled into five classes and curated with a subject matter expert assistance. The images were later cropped and patched with automated code routines to produce the final dataset. This paper presents experimental results classifying five fungi types using two different deep learning approaches and three different convolutional neural network models, VGG16, Inception V3, and ResNet50. The first approach benchmarks the classification performance for the models trained from scratch, while the second approach benchmarks the classification performance using pre-trained models based on the ImageNet dataset. Using k-fold cross-validation testing on the 5-class dataset, the best performing model trained from scratch was Inception V3, reporting 73.2% accuracy. Also, the best performing model using transfer learning was VGG16 reporting 85.04%. The statistics provided by the two approaches create an initial point of reference to encourage future research works to improve classification performance. Furthermore, the dataset built is published in Kaggle and GitHub to foster future research.

Identifying the particular skin disease by computer vision is introduced as a novel task. Based on skin or pore disease, certain therapy can be suggested. In proposed study there are different applications based on deep learning are studied with computer vision task for better performance of proposed application. Famous deep learning algorithms may include CNN (convolutional neural network) , RNN (Recurrent Neural network), etc. Objective: To diagnose skin disease with dermoscopic images automatically. Developing automated strategies to improve the accuracy of analysis for multiple psoriasis and skin diseases Methods: In existing techniques many machine learning models are used which is having high complexity and require more time for analysis. So, in this study different deep learning models are studied for understanding performance difference between different models. This paper is a comparative check about skin illnesses related to ordinary skin issues in addition to cosmetology. Image selection, segmentation of skin disease detection and classification are the important steps can be used for oily, dry, and ordinary pores. Result: The field of dermatology has seen promising results from studies on various Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithms for classifying skin diseases based on clinical images. These studies have concentrated on utilizing the strength of deep learning and computer vision techniques to classify and diagnose different skin conditions using facial images precisely. Conclusion: A survey of numerous papers is achieved on basis of technologies used, outcomes with accuracy, moral behavior, and number of illnesses diagnosed, datasets. Different existing research methodologies are compared with present deep learning architectures for understanding superior performance of deep learning models. Using deep learning, we can predict pore and skin diseases. In proposed study, introduction to different algorithms of deep learning which are combined with computer vision tasks to find the skin disease and pore disease are studied. Therapy can be predicted based on type of skin or pore disease.

Abstract:Although there have been reports of the successful diagnosis of skin disorders using deep learning, unrealistically large clinical image datasets are required for artificial intelligence (AI) training. We created datasets of standardized nail images using a region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) trained to distinguish the nail from the background. We used R-CNN to generate training datasets of 49,567 images, which we then used to fine-tune the ResNet-152 and VGG-19 models. The validation datasets comprised 100 and 194 images from Inje University (B1 and B2 datasets, respectively), 125 images from Hallym University (C dataset), and 939 images from Seoul National University (D dataset). The AI (ensemble model; ResNet-152 + VGG-19 + feedforward neural networks) results showed test sensitivity/specificity/ area under the curve values of (96.0 / 94.7 / 0.98), (82.7 / 96.7 / 0.95), (92.3 / 79.3 / 0.93), (87.7 / 69.3 / 0.82) for the B1, B2, C, and D datasets. With a combination of the B1 and C datasets, the AI Youden index was significantly (p = 0.01) higher than that of 42 dermatologists doing the same assessment manually. For B1+C and B2+ D dataset combinations, almost none of the dermatologists performed as well as the AI. By training with a dataset comprising 49,567 images, we achieved a diagnostic accuracy for onychomycosis using deep learning that was superior to that of most of the dermatologists who participated in this study.

Abstract:The mechanisms of reactions underlying the fluorophore formation from indolylethylamines in the Falck-Hillarp histochemical formaldehyde method were investigated with the aid of thin layer chromatography and mass spectrometry of the fluorescent products formed in protein models and freeze-dried tissue. In the reaction of formaldehyde with tryptamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine, the main fluorophores formed were 3,4-dihydro-β-carboline and the 2-methyl-3,4-dihydro-β-carbolinium compound (from tryptamine), and 6-hydroxy-3,4-dihydro-β-carboline and the 2-methyl-6-hydroxy-3,4-dihydro-β-carbolinium compound (from 5-hydroxytryptamine). From these findings, it is concluded that the fluorophore formation in the Falck-Hillarp method proceeds as follows: In the first step of the reaction, the indolylethylamines react with formaldehyde to form low fluorescent 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carbolines. In a subsequent step, these products are converted to fluorophores in either of two ways: through an autoxidation to 3,4-dihydro-β-carbolines, or through a second, acid-catalyzed reaction with formaldehyde to yield 2-methyl-3,4-dihydro-β-carbolinium compounds. Experiments with radioactive tryptamine indicated that the two alternative fluorophore-forming pathways are of fairly equal importance. The latter of these fluorophore-forming reactions was not previously known, and the interesting properties and implications of this formaldehyde-induced and acid-catalyzed reaction are discussed.

Abstract:Diagnosis of skin lesions is a very challenging task due to high inter-class similarities and intra-class variations between lesions in terms of color, size, site and appearance. As a result, as is the case with many types of cancer, early detection of skin cancer is vital for survival. Advances in artificial intelligence, in particular, deep learning have enabled to design and implementation of intelligence-based lesion detection and classification systems that are based on visible light images that are capable of performing early and accurate diagnosis of different skin diseases. In most cases, the precision of these methods has reached a level of accuracy that is comparable to that achieved by a qualified dermatologist. This work presents potential skin lesion classification solutions based on the datasets taken from the most recent publicly available “Skin Lesion Analysis Towards Melanoma Detection” grand challenges ISIC 2018. The proposed classification approach leverages convolutional neural networks (CNN) and transfer learning to enhance skin classification. Different pre-trained models were applied, including VGG-Net, ResNet50, InceptionV3, Xception and DenseNet121. Additionally, the heavy class imbalance is examined as a critical problem for this dataset and multiple balancing techniques, such as weight balancing and data augmentation, are considered. Finally, an ensemble approach is evaluated by combining and averaging several CNN architectures to classify the seven different types of skin lesion. The experimental results indicate that the proposed frameworks exhibit promising results when compared with ISIC 2018 challenge live leaderboard.

Abstract:The early and accurate diagnosis of skin cancer is crucial for improving patient outcomes and reducing the need for invasive biopsies. This study proposes a deep learning model for classifying skin malignancy using transfer learning and data augmentation techniques to address limitations observed in previous models and enhance diagnostic accuracy. The approach involves applying transfer learning to a pre-trained ResNet152 architecture using tensorflow and keras. Data augmentation techniques are employed on a dataset consisting of 10,015 skin lesion images obtained from the international skin imaging collaboration (ISIC) 2018 challenge, which encompasses diverse lesion types, sizes, and colors, posing a challenging classification task. Binary cross-entropy serves as the loss function, and the Adam optimizer is utilized for training the model. The results demonstrate a specificity of 87.42% and an F1 score of 0.854, outperforming other models in the field. These statistical findings highlight the effectiveness of transfer learning and data augmentation techniques in improving the accuracy of skin cancer diagnosis. The novelty of this study lies in the combination of transfer learning and data augmentation methods to enhance diagnostic accuracy. However, it is important to acknowledge the limitations of this study, including the necessity for further investigation to evaluate the clinical practicality of the model and address potential biases. Future research could explore the application of this model in a clinical setting and the development of models for detecting other types of skin lesions. In conclusion, the proposed deep learning model based on the ResNet152 architecture showcases promising results in the classification of skin lesions, demonstrating its potential for accurate skin cancer diagnosis. With further research and improvement, these models have the potential to revolutionize healthcare, improving patient outcomes, reducing healthcare costs, and increasing accessibility to screening and diagnosis, particularly for underserved populations.

Abstract:Timely and effective diagnosis of fungal keratitis (FK) is necessary for suitable treatment and avoiding irreversible vision loss for patients. In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) has been widely adopted to guide the FK diagnosis. We present a deep learning framework for diagnosing fungal keratitis using IVCM images to assist ophthalmologists. Inspired by the real diagnostic process, our method employs a two-stage deep architecture for diagnostic predictions based on both image-level and sequence-level information. To the best of our knowledge, we collected the largest dataset with 96,632 IVCM images in total with expert labeling to train and evaluate our method. The specificity and sensitivity of our method in diagnosing FK on the unseen test set achieved 96.65% and 97.57%, comparable or better than experienced ophthalmologists. The network can provide image-level, sequence-level and patient-level diagnostic suggestions to physicians. The results show great promise for assisting ophthalmologists in FK diagnosis.
Optimizing skin disease diagnosis: harnessing online community data with contrastive learning and clustering techniques

Abstract:Skin diseases pose significant challenges in China. Internet health forums offer a platform for millions of users to discuss skin diseases and share images for early intervention, leaving large amount of valuable dermatology images. However, data quality and annotation challenges limit the potential of these resources for developing diagnostic models. In this study, we proposed a deep-learning model that utilized unannotated dermatology images from diverse online sources. We adopted a contrastive learning approach to learn general representations from unlabeled images and fine-tuned the model on coarsely annotated images from Internet forums. Our model classified 22 common skin diseases. To improve annotation quality, we used a clustering method with a small set of standardized validation images. We tested the model on images collected by 33 experienced dermatologists from 15 tertiary hospitals and achieved a 45.05% top-1 accuracy, outperforming the published baseline model by 3%. Accuracy increased with additional validation images, reaching 49.64% with 50 images per category. Our model also demonstrated transferability to new tasks, such as detecting monkeypox, with a 61.76% top-1 accuracy using only 50 additional images in the training process. We also tested our model on benchmark datasets to show the generalization ability. Our findings highlight the potential of unannotated images from online forums for future dermatology applications and demonstrate the effectiveness of our model for early diagnosis and potential outbreak mitigation.

Abstract:As an analytic tool in medicine, deep learning has gained great attention and opened new ways for disease diagnosis. Recent studies validate the effectiveness of deep learning algorithms for binary classification of skin lesions (i.e., melanomas and nevi classes) with dermoscopic images. Nonetheless, those binary classification methods cannot be applied to the general clinical situation of skin cancer screening in which multi-class classification must be taken into account. The main objective of this research is to develop, implement, and calibrate an advanced deep learning model in the context of automated multi-class classification of skin lesions. The proposed Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) model is carefully designed with several layers, and multiple filter sizes, but fewer filters and parameters to improve efficacy and performance. Dermoscopic images are acquired from the International Skin Imaging Collaboration databases (ISIC-17, ISIC-18, and ISIC-19) for experiments. The experimental results of the proposed DCNN approach are presented in terms of precision, sensitivity, specificity, and other metrics. Specifically, it attains 94 % precision, 93 % sensitivity, and 91 % specificity in ISIC-17. It is demonstrated by the experimental results that this proposed DCNN approach outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms, exhibiting 0.964 area under the receiver operating characteristics (AUROC) in ISIC-17 for the classification of skin lesions and can be used to assist dermatologists in classifying skin lesions. As a result, this proposed approach provides a novel and feasible way for automating and expediting the skin lesion classification task as well as saving effort, time, and human life.
