Abstract:Embedded capacitance sensor arrays for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of piping is explored. Using a capacitive electrode layer system embedded within Fiber Reinforced. Polymer (FRP) layers, to detect potential damage and loading conditions. The sensors are comprised of an electrode array, and allow changes in system capacitance to be monitored. Combined with baseline data points, subsequent measurements can provide indication of applied force changes within composite patched or composite reinforced piping, allowing for repair or reinforcement health status monitoring. Unlike traditional sensors which only measure a single point, the proposed approach incorporates an electrode array technique, while capacitive sensing affords the ability to detect minuscule changes in force on the whole pipe surface. Thus, providing detection and monitoring capabilities beyond those currently employed by industry such as optical fiber or strain gauge.

Abstract:Composite pipes have been widely applied in various fields, and their structural health monitoring has garnered widespread attention. In this study, self-sensing joints were manufactured using conductive composites. By monitoring the electrical resistance of the joints, a piezoresistive behavior-based self-sensing method for composite pipes was developed. First, the self-sensing method was evaluated through cyclic internal pressure tests, and the monitoring resistance exhibited sensitive and timely responses to the internal pressure of composite pipes. Compared with strain gauges, the method demonstrated a sensitivity improvement of up to 90 times. Subsequently, the self-sensing method was applied to monitor joint damage, and a sharp increase in monitoring resistance was observed prior to joint failure. Furthermore, a strong correlation between the monitoring resistance and the degree of joint damage was demonstrated. The results demonstrated that pipe joints are structurally safe when the monitoring resistance change remains below 275 %, which corresponds to the elastic deformation of pipe joints. The pipe joints are considered damaged when the monitoring resistance change exceeds 4908 %. Overall, the self-sensing method proves to be capable of capturing damages inside pipe joints, presenting a promising approach for in-situ structural health monitoring of composite pipes.

Abstract:We report on distributed fiber optic sensing-based monitoring of hydrogen composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV) to simultaneously increase the operational lifespan and mitigate maintenance costs. Our approach represents, to the best of our knowledge, the first application of distributed fiber optic sensing for COPV Type IV monitoring, where the sensing fibers are attached to the surface, rather than integrated into the composite material. Specifically, we attach an optical fiber of 50 m to the pressure vessel's surface, covering both the cylindrical and dome sections. We note that our fiber optic sensing technique relies on swept wavelength interferometry providing strain information along the entire length of the optical fiber with high spatial resolution even at the millimeter scale. When the vessel is pressurized, the sensing optical fiber shows a linear strain response to pressure at every position along the fiber. After thousands of load cycles, the vessel finally fails with the optical fiber detecting and precisely localizing the damage in the vessel’s blind dome area. Furthermore, we discuss the potential of state-of-the-art signal processing methods and machine learning for advancing predictive maintenance. This could reduce the number of regular inspections, mitigate premature maintenance costs, and simultaneously increase the vessel’s remaining safe service life. We believe that the structural health monitoring of hydrogen pressure vessels with fiber optic sensors can enhance trust in hydrogen technology contributing to the energy transition in the future.

Abstract:This paper explored the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of pipelines by using fiber optic cables embedded into textiles and interrogated using Brillouin Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (BOTDR). Embedded fiber optic sensing textile would result in significant cost reduction by reducing installation time, which lowers the labor cost and the cost of work stoppage which can be substantial for certain applications like oil & gas. Also, embedding fiber into fabric provides additional protection and allows the design of different layout patterns to accommodate the requirements of a project. A strain characterization experiment was conducted to study the performance of the sensor while monitoring structural changes on an HDPE (High-density Polyethylene) pipe. Additionally, a specific sensor pattern was explored to enhance the overall sensing area of the sensor. During the test, changes in the strain distribution on the pipe were measured as the pipe was subjected to a loading of 0–600 lb. The maximum strain values measured were 1322 μ ∊ and 2465 μ ∊ for the intact and damaged pipe respectively and the highest standard deviation was 0.212. These results demonstrated the capability of the sensors to detect damages on pipelines.

Abstract:Pipes are the main structures serving as the lifeline for oil and gas transportation. However, they are prone to cracks, holes and other damages due to harsh working environments, which can lead to leakage incidents and result in significant economic losses. Therefore, the development of structural health monitoring systems with advanced online diagnostic methods is of great importance for identifying local damages and assessing the safety state of pipe structures. These efforts can guide rapid repairs and ensure the continuous, efficient and cost-effective transportation of oil and gas resources. To address this problem, this paper proposes the development of a pipe monitoring system based on quasi-distributed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing technology. The SSI-COV method is employed to process the sensor responses and extract the modal parameters of the structure. Based on this foundation, an enhanced damage identification index is proposed, which mitigates the effects of support and excitation positions on damage identification. The pipe structure can be regarded as a continuous super-statical beam, and based on its structural symmetry, a unit structure, specifically a stainless-steel pipe with fixed ends, is regarded as the experimental subject. Impact experiments have been conducted to analyze its behavior in both undamaged and damaged states. The research indicates that by using the proposed modal parameter identification method and the ASMDI damage index, ASMDI exhibits peak values at damage locations of the pipe structure. This allows for the identification of structural damage with high accuracy, fast processing efficiency and strong robustness. The study provides an effective and reliable damage diagnosis method, which can contribute to the refinement and visualization of pipe structural health monitoring systems.

Abstract:The composite pipeline is a relatively new and viable alternative pipeline to the more commonly used traditional one due to its good mechanical and fatigue properties and lower production cost. For this purpose, it is critical to assess the mechanical and fatigue performance of composite pipeline material under various working conditions, particularly for monitoring long-term creep thermo-mechanical fatigue behavior. In this paper, a long-term creep thermo-mechanical fatigue behavior in a basalt fiber reinforced polymer laminated composite pipeline is detected through an integrated expert system consisting of the electrical capacitance sensors and a deep learning algorithm. First, a multi-physics finite element model is established for the simulation of a long-term creep thermo-mechanical fatigue behavior in basalt fiber reinforced polymer composite pipelines subjected to long-term fatigue loading of internal pressure and thermal effect. Second, theoretical model results of long-term creep thermo-mechanical fatigue compliance ( Sf(t) ) over the time of creep are analyzed in pipeline material using the modulus degradation approach. Finally, an electrical potential change between electrical capacitance sensors electrodes corresponding to Sf(t) over the time of creep for some levels of long-term creep thermo-mechanical fatigue ( Rf%) is recorded and then used in these datasets for training of the novel deep neural network based on one of the most widely used of the deep neural network families is the convolutional neural network, to predict Sf(t) in pipeline for various Rf% not included in the previous finite element model evaluation (i.e. electrical capacitance sensors technique). In this paper first is detected the long-term creep thermo-mechanical fatigue behavior for Rf%=25%,50% , and 75% from a finite element model and modulus degradation approach, and then is predicted the long-term creep thermo-mechanical fatigue behavior for Rf%=15%,35%,60%, and 85% respectively via deep neural network. The proposed method results are in good agreement with the experimental results available in the literature, thus verifying the accuracy and reliability of the proposed technique and its applicability to other different composite structures.

Abstract:This paper reports the early findings of an ongoing project aimed at developing new methods to upgrade the current maintenance strategies of the civil and transport infrastructure. As part of these new methods, the use of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms is being investigated to constitute the core of a new generation of more accurate and robust structural health monitoring (SHM) systems for concrete structures. Unlike most of the existing SHM systems, relying on the analysis of the natural frequencies of the structure based on data obtained from accelerometers, the present study uses a distributed optic fiber system to monitor the strain distribution along steel reinforcing bars. The preliminary results of the study indicate that a semi-supervised Deep Autoencoder algorithm (DAE) can successfully quantify the damage attributable to transverse cracks in a reinforced concrete beam subjected to three-point loading. Future applications will feature the determination of crack locations, early detection of reinforcement corrosion as well as other types of damage such as splitting cracks or surface spalling.

Abstract:Submarine pipeline system is a main pattern in collection and transmission of offshore oil and gas, which sends oil and gas from offshore to onshore terminal, and it plays an important role in offshore oil and gas development. Because of the complicated and harsh working condition in which pipeline system works, such as impulsion, corrosion and free-spanning vibration, failure of submarine pipeline system occurs occasionally, it causes oil leakage, environment pollution and economic losses. Health monitoring is a feasible and effective manner to ensure submarine pipeline safety and reliability during service life, especially when all factors affecting pipeline failure are not still entirely realized or controlled. The practical strategy of a new real-time monitoring system for long distance submarine pipeline is introduced in this paper, which has the function of diagnosis and auto-alarm. In this system, a new distributed optical fiber sensor ( DOFS), which uses optical time domain reflectometry theory based on Brillouin backscatter, is applied to monitor the strain and temperature along the pipeline. In addition to, Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM) technology and series DOFS are also applied to extend the measure scope for long distance submarine pipeline By using signal processing system to analyze the outcome data of sensor, the strain along the pipeline can be obtained. If the strain reaches the alarm setting, the system will send out caution and meanwhile accurately give the dangerous position, The system can also analyses vibration frequency of pipeline, if free-spanning vibration occurs, caution will also be,given, so that the operator can take some measures in time to avoid the failure of pipeline. In this paper, the makeup and development principle of distributed optical fiber sensor are specified, the development, application and assembly of system in engineering are introduced as well. The brand new practical system can not only be used for submarine oil and gas pipeline but also for oil and gas transfer system in land, city coal gas transfer system, electricity-transmission cable, great span bridge, and so on. This system can also be widely used in many prospects of other industries.
Smart structural health monitoring (SHM) system for on-board localization of defects in pipes using torsional ultrasonic guided waves

Abstract:Most reported research for monitoring health of pipelines using ultrasonic guided waves (GW) typically utilize bulky piezoelectric transducer rings and laboratory-grade ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT) equipment. Consequently, the translation of these approaches from laboratory settings to field-deployable systems for real-time structural health monitoring (SHM) becomes challenging. In this work, we present an innovative algorithm for damage identification and localization in pipes, implemented on a compact FPGA-based smart GW-SHM system. The custom-designed board, featuring a Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA and front-end electronics, is capable of actuating the PZT thickness shear mode transducers, data acquisition and recording from PZT sensors and generating a damage index (DI) map for localizing the damage on the structure. The algorithm is a variation of the common source method adapted for cylindrical geometry. The utility of the algorithm is demonstrated for detection and localization of defects such as notch and mass loading on a steel pipe, through extensive finite element (FE) method simulations. Experimental results obtained using a C-clamp for applying mass loading on the pipe show good agreement with the FE simulations. The localization error values for experimental data analyzed using C code on a processor implemented on the FPGA are consistent with algorithm results generated on a computer running MATLAB code. The system presented in this study is suitable for a wide range of GW-SHM applications, especially in cost-sensitive scenarios that benefit from on-node signal processing over cloud-based solutions.

Abstract:Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) using ultrasonic-guided waves (UGWs) enables continuous monitoring of components with complex geometries and provides extensive information about their structural integrity and their overall condition. Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs) used for storing hydrogen gases at very high pressures are an example of a critical infrastructure that could benefit significantly from SHM. This can be used to increase the periodic inspection intervals, ensure safe operating conditions by early detection of anomalies, and ultimately estimate the remaining lifetime of COPVs. Therefore, in the Digital Quality Infrastructure Initiative (QI-Digital) in Germany, an SHM system is being developed for COPVs used in a hydrogen refueling station. In this study, the results of a lifetime fatigue test on a Type IV COPV subjected to many thousands of load cycles under different temperatures and pressures are presented to demonstrate the strengths and challenges associated with such an SHM system. During the cyclic testing up to the final material failure of the COPV, a sensor network of fifteen surface-mounted piezoelectric (PZT) wafers was used to collect the UGW data. However, the pressure variations, the aging process of the COPV, the environmental parameters, and possible damages simultaneously have an impact on the recorded signals. This issue and the lack of labeled data make signal processing and analysis even more demanding. Thus, in this study, semi-supervised, and unsupervised deep learning approaches are utilized to separate the influence of different variables on the UGW data with the final aim of detecting and localizing the damage before critical failure.

Abstract:In this study, advanced structural health monitoring (SHM) using a non-destructive self-sensing methodology was proposed for large-sized carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP). Cyclic point bending tests were performed on three types of CFRPs. The damage severity identification and localization were classified and investigated using four different convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures. Electrical resistance images were used to train each CNN architecture for damage analysis. An optimized CNN architecture for the damage analysis of CFRPs using electrical resistance data was proposed and compared with traditional damage analysis CNN architectures. The applicability of the proposed SHM methodology was verified by analyzing unseen damage in the CFRPs. This study addresses the limitations of previous self-sensing methods by reducing the number of electrodes, which reduces data complexity and increases the sensible area of CFRPs. Thus, this study successfully designed an efficient SHM methodology with a high accuracy of over 90 % for analyzing CFRP damage, including the severity and location, regardless of the type of carbon fiber and stacking sequence of composite structures that showed high applicability.

Abstract:In pipeline maintenance, the advent of cloud computing and Internet of Things technologies enable effective pipeline management. Practically, it is impossible to provide fast-response, full-scale, multiterrain, and spatial-level monitoring of pipelines by sparse sensors. In this article, a fitting method for online pipeline structural health monitoring (SHM) is presented. The contribution includes three aspects. First, a new pipeline SHM method based on spatial deformation fitting is proposed, which is useful for three-dimensional full-scale assessment and multiterrain applications with the sparse sensor array. There are no strict restrictions on the number and arrangement of sensors, and no finite-element-model prior information is needed. The monitoring results can be delivered to multiterminals. Second, a rational cubic spline-based fitting algorithm mainly implemented by cloud computing is provided for rapid response. It features three-time interpolation fitting and one-time coordinate transformation. The value correspondence between the measured attitude angles and the fitted deformation is dexterously established. The fitted curve is locally adjustable. Third, the fitting error on deformation is analyzed, and the effectiveness of the method is tested and verified. Reasonable parameter values for the sensor quantity and the fitting spline are suggested.

Abstract:Local stress concentration occurs when faults are present in pipelines under pressure. An example of such defects is the problem of corrosion caused by the environment in the field of pipeline installation. In the first part of this paper, we attempt to model the corrosion in the hemi-ellipsoidal form in order to study the locations of stress concentration in the specimens by several experimental cases and their influence on the stress resistance. The Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) mesoscopic damage model is used to simulate the specimens with good accuracy. In the second part, the investigation is extended to a pipe under static pressure with and without the presence of a glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite patch. The maximum stress and percent stress reduction in a defected pipe with a hemi-ellipsoidal defect are determined using a 3D finite element model. This part examines the impact of the geometry of the composite patches on the percentage reduction of the maximum stresses in a section of pipeline subjected to static pressure. In the third part, the stresses and the percentage reduction in the maximum stresses are predicted using an artificial neural network (ANN). An inverse problem using ANN and Jaya algorithm is proposed to predict the group level of different sizes of defects under composite patches based on the maximum stress and percentage reduction of stress that the pipe withstands. The new method relates directly to real-world pipeline construction and repair applications. It could be also used for structural safety monitoring.

Abstract:Interactive anomalies of pipelines represent important contributors to pipeline incidents, but monitoring interactive anomalies is challenging. This paper presents an approach to monitor interactive bending and dent deformations that occur at the same pipeline section. The proposed approach utilizes distributed fiber optic sensors to measure strain distributions of pipelines with a high resolution (0.65 mm) in real time. Steel pipes instrumented with fiber optic cables along their length and circumference directions were tested under four-point bending to generate interactive bending and dent deformations. The strain distributions measured from the distributed sensors were analyzed to detect, locate, quantify, visualize, and distinguish interactive bending and dent deformations in the loading process. The strains measured from distributed fiber optic sensors aligned with those measured from fiber Bragg grating sensors, displacement sensors, and computer vision. This study enhances the ability to monitor interactive threats in pipelines, contributing to improved condition assessments and infrastructure resilience.

Abstract:With the continuous development of mechanical automation, the structural health monitoring techniques are increasingly high requirements for damage detection. So structural health monitoring (SHM) has been playing a significant role in terms of damage prognostics. The main contribution pursued in this investigation is to establish a detection system based on ultrasonic excitation and fiber Bragg grating sensing, which combines the advantages of the ultrasonic detection and fiber Bragg grating (FBG). Differencing from most common approaches, a new way of damage detection is based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG), which can easily realize distributed detection. The basic characteristics of fiber Bragg grating sensing system are analyzed, and the positioning algorithm of structural damage is derived in theory. On these bases, the detection system was used to analyze damage localization in the aluminum alloy plate of a hole with diameters of 6 mm. Experiments have been carried out to demonstrate that the sensing system was feasible and that the estimation method of the location algorithm was easy to implement.

Abstract:Composite materials are widely used as repair materials in the oil and gas sector, particularly for vessels, piping, and pipelines. Inspection and monitoring of these composite repairs is a critical aspect of ensuring their integrity and long-term performance. The reason being that failure of composite repairs may lead to loss of production and incur additional costs for re-repair or equipment replacement. Conventionally, a visual inspection is generally performed to observe any irregularities on the external surface of the composite repairs. This will usually be followed by a series of Non-destructive Tests (NDT) to identify the extent of the damage. However, these NDT methods, merely allowing off-line testing in a local manner with complicated and heavy equipment, require extensive and time-consuming labour. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) based on Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) that utilizes strain-based signals is one of the best options for monitoring the damage mechanism in composite due to its unique advantages of light weight, high stability and reliability, a long-life cycle, and the ability to capture the online reading. In this paper, the application of the FBG monitoring approach was used to examine the strain characteristics of composite materials based on mechanical tests (tensile and flexural). Three types of samples were prepared to simulate the type of damage mechanism: healthy, delamination, and disbondment. Based on the results, it was shown that the FBG sensor has potential for detecting and distinguishing the types of failure mechanisms in composites, including cracks, delamination, and disbondment. Hence, it was suggested that the FBG sensor technology could be used for site deployment in industry.

Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors are denoted as one of the most promising sensors for SHM applications as they are lightweight, immune to electromagnetic effects and able to be embedded between the layers of composite structures. The purpose of this paper is to research on and demonstrate the feasibility of FBG sensors for SHM of composite structures. Design/methodology/approach Applications on thin composite beams intended for SHM studies are presented. The sensor system, which includes FBG sensors and related interrogator system, and manufacturing of the beams with embedded sensors, are detailed. Static tension and torsion tests are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the system. Strain analysis results obtained from the tests are compared with the ones obtained from the finite element analyses conducted using ABAQUS® software. In addition, the comparison between the data obtained from the FBG sensors and from the strain gauges is made by also considering the noise content. Finally, fatigue test under torsion load is conducted to observe the durability of FBG sensors. Findings The results demonstrated that FBG sensors are feasible for SHM of composite structures as the strain data are accurate and less noisy compared to that obtained from the strain gauges. Furthermore, the convenience of obtaining reliable data between the layers of a composite structure using embedded FBG sensors is observed. Practical implications Observing the advantages of the FBG sensors for strain measurement will promote using FBG sensors for damage detection related to the SHM applications. Originality/value This paper presents applications of FBG sensors on thin composite beams, which reveal the suitability of FBG sensors for SHM of lightweight composite structures.

Abstract:At the British Columbia Cancer Institute in Vancouver British Columbia 128 consecutive cone biopsies reviewed during a 2-month period in 1970 were evaluated for the presence of microglandular hyperplasia a comparatively less florid form of atypical endocervical hyperplasiz. 31 women had the pathology all of them premenopausal. The foci generally about 1-2 mm were situated in the endocervical canal and at the squamo-columnar junction. While 44% of the women who had used (combined) oral contraceptives had microglandular hyperplasia the nonuser incidence was 11% (1 woman had used a sequential contraceptive). Among women with a history of pill use about 50% showed a progestogen-induced atrophy while many of the other 1/2 had discontinued use or had only a short history of use. Microglandular hyperplasia is definitely associated with progestational agents or progesterone. It was seen that the glandular proliferation once initiated lasts for some time without exogenous progestogen support. No statistical connection between microglandular hyperplasia and squamous dyskaryosis or malignant change was seen.

Abstract:Abstract The continuous Non-Destructive Evaluation of assets for long-term assurance of performance has led to several developments over the deployment of a Real-Time Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system. Considering the challenges involved under the implementation of an SHM system for the applications working under harsh environmental conditions with limited access to power sources this work is aimed to contribute towards overcoming those challenges by using the noise from the structure’s machinery or any ambient source as an alternative energy source and employing Fiber Optics based sensing, for its applicability under harsh environments. The required SHM system is realized with the cross-correlation of a fully diffused noise field, sensed using the Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors at two random locations. With no control on the input received as noise, to this end, a method is developed based on a Deep Learning framework, which is aimed towards a Universal Deployment of the passive SHM system. The methodology is designed to perform the health monitoring of the system, independent of the input perturbations. The validation performed on simulation data has demonstrated the feasibility of the developed technique towards the required kind of passive SHM system.
