Abstract:Textile wastewater accommodates many toxic organic contaminants that could potentially threaten the ecosystem if left untreated. Methylene blue is a toxic, non-biodegradable, cationic dye that is reportedly observed in significant amounts in the textile effluent stream as it is widely used to dye silk and cotton fabrics. Congo red is a carcinogenic anionic dye commonly used in the textile industry. This study reports an investigation of methylene blue and Congo red removal using a chitosan-graphene oxide dip-coated electrospun nanofiber membrane. The fabricated nanocomposite was characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), FT-IR Spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, UV-vis Spectroscopy, Drop Shape Analyzer, and X-ray Diffraction. The isotherm modeling confirmed a maximum adsorptive capacity of 201 mg/g for methylene blue and 152 mg/g for Congo red, which were well fitted with a Langmuir isotherm model indicating homogenous monolayer adsorption.

Abstract:The conventional strategies employed for introducing functional groups onto the surfaces of nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) require complicated steps. Herein, we report a simple strategy for the fabrication of negatively-charged polyethersulfone (PES) NFM5 adsorbent by utilizing one-step electrospinning. Firstly, functional groups were introduced into the electrospinning solution via in-situ cross-linking co-polymerization of sodium styrene sulfonate and acrylic acid in PES solution. Then, the solution was directly used to electrospin into negatively-charged PES NFM5. Sufficient characterization methods were carried out to demonstrate the successful fabrication of the functional NFM5. Batch adsorption experiments for various kinds of dyes with different initial concentrations and pH values were carried out. The results indicated that the NFM5 showed efficient adsorption capacity for cationic dye of methylene blue MB. In particular, binary dye adsorption column experiments were carried out and the membranes exhibited excellent separation efficiency of 98.29% for MB/amaranth mixture. The successful fabrication of such fascinating NFMs adsorbent by using this simple approach may provide new sights into the design and development of adsorptive materials for industrial wastewater treatment with excellent separation efficiency towards mixed dyes. Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystal and chitosan blended Nanocomposite for dye removal. Development of a cost‐effective and environmentally friendly method to treat dye wastewater is of utmost importance. In this experimental study, wastepaper was used as the raw material for the extraction of cellulose nanocrystals to fabricate a nanocomposite membrane with chitosan. During the extraction process, acid hydrolysis (Sulfuric acid) followed by bleaching (hydrogen peroxide) was adopted. To confirm the nano‐range, particle size analysis, and FESEM were performed, which confirmed the presence of particles in the nano‐range ranging from 313.8 to 122.1 nm and FESEM observed results showed transformation of fibrous to rod shaped nanocrystals after acid hydrolysis. After successful nanocomposite fabrication a porous sieved network of membrane was observed and after adsorption successful adhesion of dye molecules over the membrane matrix was also confirmed. FTIR data showed that during adsorption mechanism some of the prominent peaks gets disappeared suggest interaction of dye molecules onto the nanocomposite. The contact angle of 21.0° was observed for the ChNC3 nanocomposite showed super hydrophilic behavior. Tensile strength was also observed in terms of young's modulus, ultimate strength, and elongation at break. The elasticity and stiffness of a material are usually indicated by its young modulus. In AH CNCs and ChNC3, the young modulus was seen to be increasing from 195 0.316, respectively. Furthermore, the potentiality of the nanocomposite membrane was analyzed for Congo red dye in synthetic wastewater prepared in the laboratory. During the batch study, various working parameters were taken such as initial dye solution (20–100 ppm), pH (1–7), contact time (10–60 min), and dosage (0.1–0.5 mg/L). To know about adsorption, Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm were analyzed it was observed that Freundlich isotherm show best fitted modeling with R2 = 0.99, and n = 1.6 showing favorability of the heterogeneous adsorption. To determine the interaction between the adsorbate and adsorbent, pseudo first order and pseudo second order kinetics models were analyzed, and it was observed that chemisorption interaction followed between the adsorbate and adsorbent. Thermodynamic parameters were analyzed, which confirmed the spontaneous and favorable adsorption mechanism. To avoid fouling problems and maintain cost effectiveness, the resulting, nanocomposite membrane was desorbed using an appropriate solvent. After 5 cycles, the desorption rate decreased from 54% to 38%. This developed nanocomposite membrane appears to be effective in effluent waste treatment because of its simple formulation approach.

Abstract:A novel membrane was developed by incorporating green‐synthesized CuO nanoparticles into a polysulfone and chitosan blend. This CuO@PS/CS membrane demonstrated enhanced adsorption capacity of Congo red and Methylene blue dyes from polluted water. The environment and public health have been protected by the simple, non‐destructive, and ecologically benign process used for fabricating membranes. In this study, a low‐cost wastewater treatment membrane is made from raw materials followed by phase inversion approach. A typical organic pollutant that has earned a poor track record for gradually harming aquatic life. Thus, the membrane technology is used to minimize the water contaminated by dyes. To treat wastewater, a membrane was developed by combining green synthesized CuO nanoparticles with polysulfone (PS) and chitosan (CS). The developed membranes were analyzed using x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, contact angle, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, and x‐ray diffraction techniques. The developed membrane, along with the nanoparticles and additives, confirmed its crystalline confirmation, hydrophilicity, arrangement of structures, and morphological modifications. CuO nanoparticles were prepared using aloe vera extract, and incorporated into a mixed matrix membrane was utilized for the congo red (CR) and methylene blue (MB) adsorption processes. The absorption capacity was analyzed via UV spectroscopy makes it potentially important for membrane performance. Therefore, the resulting membrane could be used as a substrate for dye removal applications.

Abstract:The purification of hazardous textile dyeing wastewater has exhibited many challenges because it consists of a complex mixture, including dyestuff, additives, and salts. It is necessary to fabricate membranes with enhanced permeability, fouling resistance, stability, and superior dyes and salts removal from wastewater. Incorporating a highly water stable metal-organic framework (MOFs) into membranes would meet the requirements for the efficient purification of textile wastewater. In this study, nanofiltration (NF) membranes are fabricated by incorporating MIL-100 (Fe) into the chitosan (CS) through film casting technique. The effect of MIL-100 (Fe) loadings on chitosan characterized by FT-IR, XRD, contact angle measurement, FESEM-EDS, XPS, zeta potential, and surface roughness analysis. The membrane characterization confirmed the enhanced surface roughness, pore size, surface charge, and hydrophilicity. The CS/MIL-100 (Fe) membrane exhibited an improved pure water flux from 5 to 52 L/m2h as well as 99% rejection efficiency for cationic methylene blue (MB) and anionic methyl orange (MO). We obtained the rejection efficiency trend for the MB mixed salts in the order of MgSO4 (Mg2+ - 51.6%, SO42- - 52.5%) > Na2SO4 (Na+ - 26.3%, SO42- - 29.3%) > CaCl2 (Ca2+ - 21.4%, Cl- - 23.8%) > NaCl (Na+ - 16.8%, Cl- - 19.2%). In addition, the CS/MIL-100 (Fe) composite membrane showed excellent rejection efficiency and antifouling performances with high recycling stability. These stunning results evidenced that the CS/MIL-100 (Fe) nanofiltration membrane is a promising candidate for removing toxic pollutants in the textile dyeing wastewater.
Bio-based composite from chitosan waste and clay for effective removal of Congo red dye from contaminated water: Experimental studies and theoretical insights

Abstract:Water pollution due to dyes in the textile industry is a serious environmental problem. During the finishing stage, Congo red (CR) dye, water-soluble, is released into wastewater, polluting the water body. This study explores the effectiveness of utilizing a composite composed of Safi raw clay and chitosan to remove an anionic dye from synthetic wastewater. The chitosan was extracted from crab shells. Its removal performance was compared to that of natural clay. Both the composite and raw clay were used to remove target pollutant. The effects of the chitosan load in the composite, size particles, initial dye concentration, contact time, pH, and temperature on the dye's elimination were tested in batch modes. The composite with 30% (w/w) of chitosan exhibited the highest dye removal. At pH 2, an adsorption capacity of 84.74 mg/g was achieved, indicating that the grafting of the polymer onto clay surface enhances its efficacity and stability in acidic environments. This finding was supported by characterization data obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analyses. Under optimized conditions of 20 mg dose, pH 2, 30 min of reaction time, and 20 mg/L of dye concentration, about 92% of dye removal was achieved. The Langmuir isotherm model represents dye adsorption by the composite, while dye removal was controlled by pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic data of the adsorption (ΔH = +8.82 kJ/mol; ΔG <0) suggested that the dye adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. The findings provide insights into the dye elimination by the adsorbent, indicating that the removal occurred via attractive colombic forces, as confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) analysis. Overall, the composite of natural clays and chitosan waste is a promising and innovative adsorbent for treating wastewater containing recalcitrant dyes.

Abstract:Electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber membrane was functionalized with chitosan and proteins for use in the treatment of dye-containing wastewater. The PAN nanofiber membrane was subjected to alkaline hydrolysis, before being grafted with chitosan and subsequently the proteins from chicken egg white. The resultant nanofiber membrane (P-COOH-CS-CEW) was comprehensively characterized using thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The efficiency of P-COOH-CS-CEW in removing cationic dye toluidine blue O (TBO) and anionic dye acid orange 7 (AO7) in aqueous solution was evaluated. Based on the performance of model fitting, Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic model could be used to describe the performance of P-COOH-CS-CEW in the removal of TBO (pH 10) and AO7 (pH 2) from the dye solutions. The adsorbed TBO and AO7 dyes can be completely desorbed by an elution solution made of 50% (v/v) ethanol and 1 M sodium chloride. After five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, the efficiency of dye removal by P-COOH-CS-CEW was maintained above 97%.

Abstract:The prevalence of dyes in aquatic environments raises severe concerns on a global scale. Methyl orange (MO) is a typical anionic organic dye, which is widely used in industrial wastewater such as textile and paper making. Then the treatment of water contaminated with dyes is an important aspect. The recent decade has witnessed adsorption technology emerging as an advanced dye wastewater treatment with great potential and a grand blueprint, in which the specific surface area and active sites of the adsorbent are considered to be the two most important characteristics largely impacting the adsorption performance. In this study, chitosan-treated nanocomposite was prepared as an effective adsorbent for the removal of MO from contaminated water. The dye removal parameter was performed according to the solution acidity, reaction time, initial concentration, competing for ion affinity, maximum adsorption capacity, and reuse with potential use. The solution pH played a key role in MO dye removal and a suitable pH of 7.0 was selected according to high adsorption ability. The adsorption results were highly fitted with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model and the maximum adsorption was 172.17 mg/g. The results revealed that introducing chitosan could improve the adsorption capacity and rate effectively even though sacrificing part of specific surface areas of the cotton, indicating that active sites might play a dominant role during the MO adsorption. In addition, the fabricated nanocomposite adsorbent was recycled rapidly by the eluent and regenerated simultaneously, which exhibited the advantages of easy operation as a potentially cost-effective material. The chitosan-based nanocomposite displayed high reusability based on the elution and simultaneous regeneration ability. Therefore, as a cheap green nanocomposite adsorbent with high adsorption performance for MO, chitosan-based fibrous nanocomposite adsorbent is expected to become one of the best candidate materials for future industrial wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Developing efficient and recyclable membranes for water contaminant removal still remains a challenge in terms of practical applications. Herein, a recyclable membrane constituted of polyacrylonitrile-graphene and oxide-polydopamine was fabricated and demonstrated efficient adsorption capacities with respect to heavy metal ions (62.9 mg g−1 of Cu2+ ion, CuSO4 50 mg L−1) and organic dye molecules (306.7 mg g−1 of methylene blue and 339.6 mg g−1 of eriochrome black T, MB/EBT 50 mg L−1). The polyacrylonitrile fibers provide the skeleton of the membrane, while the graphene oxide and polydopamine endow the membrane with hydrophilicity, which is favorable for the adsorption of pollutants in water. Benefitting from the protonation and deprotonation effects of graphene oxide and polydopamine, the obtained membrane demonstrated promotion of the selective adsorption or desorption of pollutant molecules. This guarantees that the adsorbed pollutant molecules can be desorbed promptly from the membrane through simple pH adjustment, ensuring the reusability of the membrane. After ten adsorption–desorption cycles, the membrane could still maintain a desirable adsorption capacity. In addition, compared with other, similar membranes reported, this composite membrane displays the highest mechanical stability. This work puts forward an alternative strategy for recyclable membrane design and expects to promote the utilization of membrane techniques in practical wastewater treatment.

Abstract:A novel nanofiber composite nano-filtration membrane was prepared by combination of grafting, electrospinning and surface coating. First, carboxyl multi-walled carbon nanotubes were grafted onto bacterial cellulose molecular chains by solution reaction. The grafting products were characterized by TEM, FTIR, Raman, XPS and TGA measurements. Then, they were electrospun into nanofibers to be the supporting layer, and a coating of denser chitosan hydrogel thin film was used as the barrier layer. The morphology of the electrospun nanofibers and composite membrane were observed by SEM. The mechanical behavior of the composite membrane was investigated in dry and wet state. The filtration properties were evaluated in term of the pure water flux (PWF), dye rejection rate and anti-fouling properties. Results showed that the chitosan hydrogel coated electrospun nanofiber composite membrane had higher tensile strength and Young’s Modulus with the value of 11.75, 10.11 and 244, 211 MPa in dry and wet state, respectively. The PWF was increased from 52.1 to 140.7 L/m2 h with the operation pressure increasing from 0.1 to 0.6 MPa. Direct Orange S, Procion Red mx-5B, Stilbene Yellow and Methylene Blue with molecular weight ranged from 300 to 800 g/mol were selected for dye removal test. The rejection rate could maintain over 90% for dyes with the molecular weight larger than 600 g/mol under 0.5 MPa. The chitosan hydrogel coated electrospun nanofiber composite membrane exhibited good anti-fouling properties for both oil and protein. These results indicate that these membranes are efficient for dye removal from wastewater, with high flux and rejection rate at high pressure.

Abstract:We present a nanocomposite gel that efficiently adsorbs a toxic and non-biodegradable cationic dye (methylene blue) from water. This nanocomposite gel is synthesized using chitosan, silica, and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) as precursors. The structure of the nanocomposite gel is characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and cryogenic-scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM). Its viscoelastic properties are analyzed using a rheometer, and the mechanical rigidity is noted to significantly improve upon the incorporation of TiO2 NPs. The nanocomposite gel is then utilized to adsorb methylene blue dye (1-20mg/L) from its aqueous solution using batch method. Effects of contact time, pH of the solvent, amount of adsorbent dose, and initial dye concentration on the dye removal percentage are probed systematically. The kinetic studies indicate that the adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics. Among various isotherms, Freundlich isotherm describes the adsorption best with the highest regression coefficient. Furthermore, preliminary results show that the nanocomposite synthesized here even has the capability of adsorbing heavy metal ions such as chromium (Cr(VI)). This nanocomposite gel is, therefore, a promising candidate for the treatment of wastewater containing dyes and other contaminants from wastewater.

Abstract:In this work, we designed novel chitosan-g-poly-(IA-co-DADMAC)/Fe3O4 polymer composite hydrogel using in situ ultrasonic wave-assisted polymerization method and applied for the uptake of methylene blue (MB) and congo red (CR) dyes from aqueous solution. The polymer composite hydrogel was characterized via FT-IR, XRD, TGA, FE-SEM, BET and VSM analysis. More interestingly, dyes can be efficiently adsorbed and after adsorption conveniently separated from solution by using external magnet. For dye adsorption studies, congo red (anionic dye) and methylene blue dyes (cationic dye) were taken as the target pollutant. Adsorption isotherm followed Fruendlich model with 862.06 mg/g and 1111.11 mg/g, respectively, adsorption capacity and the adsorption kinetics was most appropriately explained using pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Hollow Polyaniline Microsphere/MnO2/Fe3O4 Nanocomposites in Adsorptive Removal of Toxic Dyes from Contaminated Water

Abstract:Dyes are considered as recalcitrant compounds and are not easily removed through conventional water treatment processes. The present study demonstrated the fabrication of polyaniline hollow microsphere (PNHM)/MnO2/Fe3O4 composites by in situ deposition of MnO2 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of PNHM. The physicochemical characteristics and adsorption behavior of the prepared PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 composites towards the removal of toxic methyl green (MG) and Congo red (CR) dyes have been investigated. The characterization study revealed the successful synthesis of the prepared PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 adsorbent with a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 191.79 m2/g. The batch adsorption study showed about 88 and 98% adsorption efficiencies for MG and CR dyes, respectively, at an optimum dose of 1 g/L of PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 at pH ∼6.75 at room temperature (303 ± 3 K). The adsorption phenomena of MG and CR dyes were well described by the Elovich and pseudo-second-order kinetics, respectively, and Freundlich isotherm model. The thermodynamics study shows that the adsorption reactions were endothermic and spontaneous in nature. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) for MG and CR dyes was observed as 1142.13 and 599.49 mg/g, respectively. The responsible adsorption mechanisms involved in dye removal were electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, and the formation of the covalent bonds. The coexisting ion study revealed that the presence of phosphate co-ion considerably reduced the CR dye removal efficiency. However, the desorption-regeneration study demonstrated the successful reuse of the spent PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 material for the adsorption of MG and CR dyes for several cycles. Given the aforementioned findings, the PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 nanocomposites could be considered as a promising adsorbent for the remediation of dye-contaminated water.

Abstract:Nanofibrous membranes showing selective separation of certain dyes out from multiple organic mixtures are of great importance for many advanced applications. Although various strategies including mixed-matrix-membrane or elaborately designed surface modification have been reported for preparation of these advanced membranes, they are still limited in terms of tedious experimental work and questionable long-term stability. Herein, we have designed and synthesized a range of super-engineering polyarylene ethers containing pendent nucleophilic nitriles and negatively charged sulfonate groups, which have been further processed into nanofibrous membranes (NFM) via the one-step electrospinning technique. Thanks to the presence of high density of surface active binding sites, the electrospun polymeric nanofibers exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 796.25 mg/g for cationic organic dye of methylene blue. More importantly, the optimized polymeric NFM allows rapid selective removal of cationic dyes from their mixtures with other dyes molecules, and the removal efficiency of cationic dyes arrives up to 99% even after eight separation-regeneration cycles. Due to their facile fabrication, highly selective purification feature as well as good recyclability, the protocol revealed in this work would open new way for fabrication of advanced separation membranes for wastewater purification.

Abstract:Carboxymethyl β-cyclodextrin–nanochitosan–glutaraldehyde (CM-βCD:nChi:Glu) terpolymer was prepared as a nano-adsorbent for the removal of the anionic textile dye, acid red 37. The terpolymer nanocomposite formation and characterization were clarified by FTIR, XRD, scanning electron microscopy, TEM, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller specific surface area (BET-SSA), and zeta potential. The removal of the textile dye was investigated by using the batch adsorption method, investigating the effect of pH, dye concentration, adsorbent dose, contact time, and temperature. The results revealed that the maximum removal efficiency of 102.2 mg/L of the dye is about 99.67% under pH 6.0, the optimal contact time is 5 min, and the adsorbent dosage is 0.5 g/L. At 29°C; the adsorption capacity increased from 81.29 to 332.60 mg/g when the initial concentration of the dye was increased from 40.97 to 212.20 mg/L. Adsorption kinetics fitted well with the pseudo–second-order model with a good correlation ( R 2 = 0.9998). The Langmuir isotherm model can best describe the adsorption isotherm model. Based on the experimental results, the CM-βCD:nChi:Glu terpolymer has a promising potential as an efficient novel adsorbent for the removal of textile dye acid red 37 from contaminated water. This study's preparation techniques and demonstrated mechanisms offer valuable insights into the adsorbent–adsorbate interactions mechanism, analysis, challenges, and future directions of beta-cyclodextrin/chitosan–based adsorbents in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Different dyes are discharged into water streams, causing significant pollution to the entire ecosystem. The present work deals with the removal of acid red 2 dye (methyl red-as an anionic dye) by green sorbents based on chitosan derivatization. In this regard, two classes of chitosan derivatives-a total of six-were prepared by gamma irradiation at 30 kGy. The first group (group A) constitutes a crosslinked chitosan/polyacrylamide/aluminum oxide with different feed ratios, while the second group, identified as group B, is composed of crosslinked carboxymethyl chitosan/polyacrylamide/aluminum oxide with different ratios. Glycerol was added to soften the resultant hydrogels. The products were characterized by different tools, including FTIR for confirming the chemical modification, TGA for investigating their thermal properties, and XRD for verifying their crystalline structure. The morphology of the prepared derivatives was studied through SEM, while their topography before and after dye adsorption was monitored via the AFM. The removal efficiencies of the prepared sorbents were verified at different operation conditions, such as pH, temperature, adsorbent dose, initial concentration of dye solutions, and contact time. The data revealed that the optimum conditions for maximum dye uptake were as follows: pH 4, contact time 120 min, 0.1-g sorbent dose, and 50-ppm dye concentration. Additionally, the prepared sorbents demonstrated potent adsorption capacity and removal efficiency. It was found that the elements of the second group displayed higher performance than their counterparts. The data showed also that the adsorption process best fits with the Freundlich model and obeyed pseudo-first-order kinetic isotherm. In addition, the synthesized composites showed observable antibacterial potency toward E. coli as a Gram-negative bacterium and S. aureus as a Gram-positive bacterium.
Fabrication of Bioinspired Gallic Acid-Grafted Chitosan/Polysulfone Composite Membranes for Dye Removal via Nanofiltration

Abstract:In this work, we have developed a novel and facile method to prepare gallic acid-grafted chitosan/polysulfone (PS) composite membranes for dye removal from aqueous solutions. First, the gallic acid was grafted onto the eco-friendly chitosan through a free-radical grafting copolymerization reaction. Second, the gallic acid-grafted chitosan conjugates were codeposited onto the top surface of PS substrates by electrostatic interactions in order to transform the ultrafiltration membrane to the thin and defect-free nanofiltration membrane. The morphology and chemical composition of the as-prepared composite membranes were fully characterized by various spectroscopy and microscopy techniques. Moreover, after the optimization of preparation parameters, the obtained membrane displayed a high rejection of 97.2% for Congo red with a high permeance of 14.0 L h–1 m–2 bar–1. Furthermore, the composite membranes also exhibited good rejections for other dyes with different molecular weights such as Evan blue (97.3%), Acid red 94 (97.6%), and Alcian blue 8GX (98%) on the basis of size exclusion, accompanied with good permeance of 12.9, 11.9, and 10.9 L h–1 m–2 bar–1, respectively, which shows potential for scale-up industrial applications.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:We established three nano-solid adsorbents: nanocellulose based on plant loofah sponge (NC), chitosan (CS), and nanocellulose/chitosan composite (CSC). These substances were employed as solid adsorbents to eliminate methylene blue (MB) dye from wastewater. Various characterization techniques were employed to investigate all the synthesized solid adsorbents, including TGA (thermogravimetric analysis), XRD (X-ray diffraction spectra), (BET) nitrogen gas adsorption-desorption, SEM (scanning electron microscope), TEM (transmission electron microscopy), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) spectrometer, and zeta potential. According to our results, CSC showed greater thermal stability than LS and NC but lower than CS, mesoporous (2.012 nm), higher total pore volume (0.366 cm 3 . g − 1 ), specific surface area (639.3 m 2 . g − 1 ), and pH pzc of 7.22. The static adsorption of MB was well described by the Langmuir ( R 2 > 0.9872), Temkin ( R 2 > 0.9668), and Dubinin-Radushkevich ( R 2 > 0.9485) models. The composite of nanocellulose and chitosan exhibited the highest Langmuir adsorption capacity (301.20 mg. g − 1 ) at 47 °C after a 24 h shaking period at a dosage of 2 g. L − 1 as the adsorbent and pH of 7. The adsorption of MB by the fabricated solid materials fitted well with the linear PSO ( R 2 > 0.9806) and Elovich ( R 2 > 0.9574) kinetic model. The enthalpy, entropy, and free energy change for the adsorption of MB onto CSC were determined to be 47.11 kJ. mol − 1 , 0.172 kJ. mol − 1 . K − 1 , and − 3.29 kJ. mol − 1 , respectively at 20 °C. Thermodynamic investigation showed that MB adsorption is spontaneous, endothermic, favorable (0 < R L <1, 0.017–0.313), and physisorption ( E DR < 8 kJ. mol − 1 ). Compared to the other eluents, nitric acid produced the highest desorption percentage (98.5%).

Abstract:This research presents a novel and efficient process for Congo Ced (CR) dye removal together with exceptional antimicrobial performance using a dual-functional composite membrane. The membrane fabrication involves the electro-spun infusion of cuprammonium cellulose solution with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) in a conjugated fashion. The composite membrane exhibits 94.0 % dye removal capability and 41 mg/g adsorption capacity. The adsorption kinetics was proved to conform to the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model, and the equilibrium adsorption results were accurately defined by the Dubinin-Radushkevich model, indicating the process of adsorption as a physical, exothermic interaction that occurs spontaneously. The dye removal efficacy of the membrane in the first and fifth usage was 94.5 and 84.2 %, respectively, demonstrating its effectiveness, stability, and reusability. The composite membrane also exhibited effective antibacterial performance regarding Staphylococcus Aureus and Escherichia Coli ( S. aureus & E. coli ) with 99 % bacterial reduction capability at high permeation flux of ∼13,000 L m −2 h −1 . Hence, the fibrous composite materials demonstrated its potential to be an ideal choice for water treatment in textile mills, especially in developing countries.

Abstract:The present study reported the synthesis and utilization of a graphene-based hybrid nanocomposite (MnFe2O4/G) to mitigate several synthetic dyes, including methylene blue, malachite green, crystal violet, and Rhodamine B. This adsorbent was structurally analyzed by several physicochemical techniques such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm measurement, point of zero charge, and Boehm titrations. BET surface area of MnFe2O4/G was measured at 382.98 m2/g, which was substantially higher than that of MnFe2O4. MnFe2O4/G possessed diverse surface chemistry properties with the presence of many functional groups such as carboxylic acid, phenolic, lactone, and basic groups. MnFe2O4/G was used to remove synthetic dyes in the aqueous media. The effect of many factors, e.g., concentration (5-50 mg/L), pH (4-10), dose (5-20 mg), and temperature (25-45 °C) on adsorption performance of MnFe2O4/G was conducted. Kinetic, isotherm, intraparticle, and thermodynamic models were adopted for investigating adsorption phenomenon of dyes on MnFe2O4/G. The maximum adsorption capacity of dyes over MnFe2O4/G was found as Rhodamine B (67.8 mg/g) < crystal violet (81.3 mg/g) < methylene blue (137.7 mg/g) < malachite green (394.5 mg/g). Some tests were performed to remove mixed dyes, and mixed dyes in the presence of antibiotics with total efficiencies of 65.8-87.9% after 120 min. Moreover, the major role of π-π stacking interaction was clarified to gain insight into the adsorption mechanism. MnFe2O4/G could recycle up to 4 cycles, which may be beneficial for further practical water treatment.
