Abstract:Hyperspectral imaging remote sensing is mutually restricted in terms of spatial and spectral resolutions, signal-to-noise ratio and exposure time. To deal with this trade-off properly, it is beneficial for imaging systems to have high light flux. In this paper, we put forward a novel hyperspectral imaging method with high light flux bioinspired by chromatic blur vision in color blind animals. We designed a camera lens with high degree of longitudinal chromatic aberration, a monochrome image sensor captured the chromatic blur images at different focal lengths. Finally, by using the known point spread functions of the chromatic blur imaging system, we process these chromatically blurred images by deconvolution based on singular value decomposition inverse filtering, and the spectral images of a target were restored. We constructed three different targets for validating image restoration based on a typical octopus eyeball imaging system. The results show that the proposed imaging method can effectively extract spectral images from the chromatically blurred images. This study can facilitate development of a novel bionic hyperspectral imaging, which may benefit from the high light flux of a large aperture and provide higher detection sensitivity.

Abstract:In this study, an algorithm was developed for the rendering of texture images with high color fidelity. The algorithm is based on the dichromatic reflection model, which recovers the implicit geometrical information of each pixel position in the texture image by exploiting the interaction between object surface and light. Using the recovered implicit geometrical information and a target color, a new texture image can then be synthesized. The synthesized image was then further modified to give correct texture strength. The algorithm developed in this study can be used for both color and gray texture images. It is suitable for the applications in texture simulation and visualization with the advantage of high color fidelity.

Abstract:We present a method with which to recover the intrinsic shading and reflectance characteristics of multicolored three-dimensional objects in a single image, with which realistic new scenes can be synthesized. A color watershed algorithm, which is based on a regularized dichromatic fitting error, is proposed for robust image segmentation. For shading recovery in small regions, a weighted interpolation is employed, whereas in large regions the reflectance and shading are calculated based on the assumption of gradual shape variation. It is demonstrated that the proposed method is promising and can be applied in image simulation.
Joint Chromatic Aberration Correction and Color Fringe Removal for Variable Aperture Optical System

Abstract:In this paper a novel way to correct chromatic aberration and remove the color fringe for variable aperture optical system considering the physical causes is proposed. From the perspective of the correlation between chromatic aberration and aperture, we explain why image fusion with different aperture parameters can effectively remove color fringing. Then we propose a specific color fringing detection and image fusion process. First, we detect the overexposed area of the large aperture image, perform grayscale grading on its neighborhood, extract the edges, and expand to obtain the candidate color fringing region. Then the two images are transformed to YCbCr color space to extract the purple fringe area by comparing the color information of the candidate color fringe area. Finally, we use the Cb and Cr channels of the small aperture image to correct the corresponding channels in the color fringing area and retain the brightness of the original image. Through image fusion, we can remove the color fringing caused by axial chromatic aberration and sensor crosstalk, and the residual lateral chromatic aberration can be corrected by simple image warp. Compared with the traditional blind restoration of color fringe regions, our method uses the hue information of small aperture image as a reference and no artifact is introduced. Experimental results show that both the subjective visual effects and objective evaluation have been significantly improved.
Color Retinal Image Enhancement Based on Luminosity and Contrast Adjustment

Abstract:Objective: Many common eye diseases and cardiovascular diseases can be diagnosed through retinal imaging. However, due to uneven illumination, image blurring, and low contrast, retinal images with poor quality are not useful for diagnosis, especially in automated image analyzing systems. Here, we propose a new image enhancement method to improve color retinal image luminosity and contrast. Methods: A luminance gain matrix, which is obtained by gamma correction of the value channel in the HSV (hue, saturation, and value) color space, is used to enhance the R, G, and B (red, green and blue) channels, respectively. Contrast is then enhanced in the luminosity channel of L*a*b* color space by CLAHE (contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization). Image enhancement by the proposed method is compared to other methods by evaluating quality scores of the enhanced images. Results: The performance of the method is mainly validated on a dataset of 961 poor-quality retinal images. Quality assessment (range 0-1) of image enhancement of this poor dataset indicated that our method improved color retinal image quality from an average of 0.0404 (standard deviation 0.0291) up to an average of 0.4565 (standard deviation 0.1000). Conclusion: The proposed method is shown to achieve superior image enhancement compared to contrast enhancement in other color spaces or by other related methods, while simultaneously preserving image naturalness. Significance: This method of color retinal image enhancement may be employed to assist ophthalmologists in more efficient screening of retinal diseases and in development of improved automated image analysis for clinical diagnosis.

Abstract:Purpose: We simulate how subjects with losses in chromatic and achromatic contrast sensitivity perceive colored images by using the spatiochromatic corresponding pair algorithm. Methods: This is a generalized version of the algorithm by Capilla et al. (J Opt Soc Am (A) 2004;21:176-186) for simulating color perception of color deviant subjects, which incorporates a simple spatial vision model, consisting of a linear filtering stage, with a band-pass achromatic filter and two low-pass chromatic ones, for the red-green and blue-yellow mechanisms. These filters, except for the global scaling, are the subject's contrast sensitivity functions measured along the cardinal directions of the color space. In its present form, the algorithm would serve to simulate alterations both in the spectral sensitivities and in the contrast sensitivities of the visual mechanisms. Results: After a preliminary theoretical study on the effect of frequency selective and overall reductions in the contrast sensitivity function of a single mechanism, we present cases of real subjects with glaucoma and diabetes, suffering alterations of different magnitude in the three mechanisms. Conclusions: The simulations allow us to learn about the different types of distortions that can be experienced by a subject with impaired contrast sensitivities (blur, haloes, color shifts, local or global contrast, brightness and colorfulness reductions, etc.) and highlight the difficulties arising when trying to predict the quality of the final image from the losses in the individual mechanisms.

Abstract:A preserved-color-pixel (PCP) concept is proposed. The PCP color filter array (CFA) is arranged to construct "PCP pixels". A PCP pixel is surrounded by “buffer pixels” having color filters of the same color spectrum as that of the PCP pixel, so that most of color cross-talk from pixels of different colors are absorbed by the buffer pixels. The color cross-talk components of the buffer-pixel signals are computationally canceled by a proposed non-parametric method called "similarity-based blind cross-talk correction (SBC)," where signals of PCP pixels are used as the ground truth to estimate the signals of buffer-pixels without influence of the cross-talk. The demosaicing of each color planes' images sampled with a PCP-CFA arrangement is implemented by the adaptive normalized convolution (ANC) in conjunction with the proposed "post-convolutional-variation-minimization (PCVM)" algorithm for its cost function. Both SBC and PCVM-ANC are especially useful for image acquisition with a pixel array in a sub-half-micron generation, where its pixel pitch is approximately, or smaller than, 0.5 μm. The concept is verified with image simulation, and its effectiveness is quantified with the slanted-edge based spatial frequency response (SFR) modular transfer function (MTF) method by using the parametric color cross-talk analysis based on proposed "scalable-single-parameter (SSP)" color cross-talk model. The image simulation confirms the color reproductivity, together with the effectiveness of image resolution improvement under the influence of the complication of color cross-talk between pixels and lateral chromatic aberration (LCA) of the taking-lens. The benefit is also verified by peak-signal-to-noise-ratio (PSNR) analysis with simulated images based on a real-world picture, indicating that the proposed concept can maintain PSNR when color crosstalk increases.

Abstract:To improve the ability of the color distinguishment for protanopes and deuteranopes, a color image trasformation method is proposed based on the adaptive mapping algorithm. The RGB values are firstly compressed for a color image. Based on the simulation model for the daltonism and an adaptive mapping algorithm, a one-to-one mapping relationship is then built to map the ordinary vision color space to achromates' color plane. With this relationship, an original image is finally transformed to a new one which will be supplied to achromates. The transform is conducted on 20 test patterns for achromates, and it is found that the information which is invisible to the protanopes and deuteranopes in the original image stands out in the retrieval one. Thus it is expected that this method can be applied in the image retrieval for protanopes and deuteranopes without any damage.

Abstract:Background and Objective: Color fundus photography is an important imaging modality that is currently limited by a narrow dynamic range. We describe a post-image processing technique to generate high dynamic range (HDR) retinal images with enhanced detail. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective, observational case series evaluating fundus photographs of patients with macular pathology. Photographs were acquired with three or more exposure values using a commercially available camera (Topcon 50-DX). Images were aligned and imported into HDR processing software (Photomatix Pro). Fundus detail was compared between HDR and raw photographs. Results: Sixteen eyes from 10 patients (5 male, 5 female; mean age 59.4 years) were analyzed. Clinician graders preferred the HDR image 91.7% of the time (44/48 image comparisons), with good grader agreement (81.3%, 13/16 eyes). Conclusions: HDR fundus imaging is feasible using images from existing fundus cameras and may be useful for enhanced visualization of retinal detail in a variety of pathologic states. Abstract:Cameras cannot capture the same colors as those seen by the human eye because the eye and the cameras' sensors differ in their spectral sensitivity. To obtain a plausible approximation of perceived colors, the camera's Image Signal Processor (ISP) employs a color correction step. However, even advanced color correction methods cannot solve this underdetermined problem, and visible color inaccuracies are always present. Here, we explore an approach in which we can capture accurate colors with a regular camera by optimizing the spectral composition of the illuminant and capturing one or more exposures. We jointly optimize for the signal‐to‐noise ratio and for the color accuracy irrespective of the spectral composition of the scene. One or more images captured under controlled multispectral illuminants are then converted into a color‐accurate image as seen under the standard illuminant of D65. Our optimization allows us to reduce the color error by 20–60% (in terms of CIEDE 2000), depending on the number of exposures and camera type. The method can be used in applications in which illumination can be controlled, and high colour accuracy is required, such as product photography or with a multispectral camera flash. Abstract:We tested achromatopsic observer, MS, on a number of tasks to establish the extent to which he can process chromatic contour. Stimuli, specified in terms of cone-contrast, were presented in a three-choice oddity paradigm. First we show that MS is able to discriminate the magnitude of chromatic and luminance contrast, but performance is inferior to that of normal observers. Moreover, MS can discriminate isoluminant borders of different chromatic composition. These abilities are not the result of unintended luminance differences and are abolished when chromatic borders are masked by sharp luminance change. In simple displays, local cone-contrast signals can make a significant contribution to surface colour appearance in normal observers. In more complex displays, the perception of a surface's colour becomes largely independent of the local contrast to its background, via processes presumed to be similar to the edge integration and anchoring stages of Land's Retinex algorithm. We show that in simple displays the percepts of both MS and normal observers are dominated by local chromatic-contrast. But, although the percepts of normal observers change in line with the predictions of retinex theory in more complex displays, those of MS do not, remaining dominated by local contrast signals. We conclude that MS has lost the ability to perform edge integration and that this loss is closely related to his absence of colour experience.
A Novel Approach to Image Recoloring for Color Vision Deficiency

Abstract:In this paper, a novel method to modify color images for the protanopia and deuteranopia color vision deficiencies is proposed. The method admits certain criteria, such as preserving image naturalness and color contrast enhancement. Four modules are employed in the process. First, fuzzy clustering-based color segmentation extracts key colors (which are the cluster centers) of the input image. Second, the key colors are mapped onto the CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram. Then, using the concept of confusion line (i.e., loci of colors confused by the color-blind), a sophisticated mechanism translates (i.e., removes) key colors lying on the same confusion line to different confusion lines so that they can be discriminated by the color-blind. In the third module, the key colors are further adapted by optimizing a regularized objective function that combines the aforementioned criteria. Fourth, the recolored image is obtained by color transfer that involves the adapted key colors and the associated fuzzy clusters. Three related methods are compared with the proposed one, using two performance indices, and evaluated by several experiments over 195 natural images and six digitized art paintings. The main outcomes of the comparative analysis are as follows. (a) Quantitative evaluation based on nonparametric statistical analysis is conducted by comparing the proposed method to each one of the other three methods for protanopia and deuteranopia, and for each index. In most of the comparisons, the Bonferroni adjusted p-values are <0.015, favoring the superiority of the proposed method. (b) Qualitative evaluation verifies the aesthetic appearance of the recolored images. (c) Subjective evaluation supports the above results.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an approach to preserve a crucial visual cue in color to grayscale transformation: attention. The main contributions are three folds: 1) preserving visual attention is more biological plausible than preserving other low level cues, which makes our method more reasonable in theory from both biological and psychological aspects, 2) We treat the saliency map from visual attention analysis as a classifier and aim to preserve attention area in the output grayscale image. 3) A simple minimizing function toward this specific problem is established and can be easily solved. Experimental results on test images indicate that our method is both practical and effective in preserving visual attention from the original color image to corresponding grayscale image.

Abstract:We present a new, and we believe arguably correct, algorithm for producing Red-Green-Blue (RBG) composites from 3-band astronomical images. Our method ensures that an object with a specified astronomical color (e.g. g-r and r-i) has a unique color in the RGB image, as opposed to the burnt-out white stars to which we are accustomed. A natural consequence of this is that we can use the same colors to code color-magnitude diagrams, providing a natural `index' to our images. We also introduce the use of an asinh stretch, which allows us to show faint objects while simultaneously preserving the structure of brighter objects in the field, such as the spiral arms of large galaxies. We believe that, in addition to their aesthetic value, our images convey far more information than do the traditional ones, and provide examples from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging, the Hubble Deep Field (HDF), and Chandra to support our claims. Abstract:Daylight fluorescent artists’ colors have been well established as fugitive. Upon exposure to light, these vibrant colors can fade and exhibit color shifts. Artwork containing these fluorescent colorants presents complex challenges for art conservators faced with conserving these inherently problematic materials. This paper examined nine fluorescent colorants obtained from Kremer Pigmente, referred to the previous literature and research, and attempted to quantify the visual and photographic observations of fading and color changes. It provides additional information that could be useful in considering conservation documentation and treatment. Fiber optic spectroscopy using ultraviolet and visible light sources was used to measure the spectral shifts of the colorants before and after exposure to light. The fluorescent colors exhibited alterations in intensity coupled with primary peak shifts in the spectrum corresponding to the optical fading and color shifts. Multimodal imaging was executed to analyze the pigments in different regions of the spectrum before and after aging, which has not been documented before with these fluorescent colorants. Imaging in various regions of the spectrum indicated differences in absorption and reflectance between the pigments as captured by a modified camera. The results were compared to recently published research including the identification of the dyes present in the Kremer line of pigments. Multimodal imaging and fiber optic spectroscopy provided valuable information for future documentation and conservation of artworks containing these colorants. Specifically, these non-invasive techniques provide a method to document and identify the spectral changes between the aged and unaged pigment, graph and predict the direction of overall color change, and provide useful data for establishing future conservation treatment protocols.

Abstract:We discuss digitization, subsequent digital analysis and processing of negatives (and diapositives) made by Finlay, Thames, Dufay, Paget, and similar additive color screen processes. These early color processes (introduced in the 1890s and popular until the 1950s) used a special color screen filter and a monochromatic negative. Due to poor stability of dyes used to produce color screens many of the photographs appear faded; others exist only in the form of (monochromatic) negatives. We discuss the possibility of digitally reconstructing the original color from scans of original negatives or by virtue of infrared imaging of original transparencies (which eliminates the physically coupled color filters) and digitally recreating the original color filter pattern using a new open-source software tool. Photographs taken using additive color screen processes are some of the very earliest color images of our shared cultural heritage. They depict people, places, and events for which there are no other surviving color images. We hope that our new software tool can bring these images back to life.
Color constancy of color reproductions in art paintings

Abstract:Popular color reproductions of art paintings such as postcards are intended to remind viewers of the original works. It is, however, unclear how well the quality of the reproductions is preserved under various illuminations. Color constancy of the reproductions in relation to colors in the original paintings was estimated computationally with hyperspectral images of 15th-century Flemish paintings, 20th-century modern abstract paintings, and their corresponding postcards with a series of illuminants: the CIE daylight D65 with correlated color temperature (CCT) 6500 K, daylight D40, fluorescent lamps F2 and F11, and a LED lamp designed for museums with CCT approximately 3500-4000 K. Despite large colorimetric differences between the types of art paintings and between the illuminants simulated, local areas showed good color constancy: skin areas in the Flemish paintings ranged from 0.76 to 0.81, whereas nonskin areas ranged from 0.19 to 0.68. This result suggests that viewers may be able to achieve color constancy with the reproduction postcards by disregarding inconsistent colors representations from the original paintings caused by changes in illumination conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a color image enhancement method that uses the CIELAB color space to improve the quality of degraded images for human visual perception. In our method, the lightness of a color image is enhanced, based on gamma correction, and the hue and chroma are preserved in the CIELAB color space. During this process, color gamut problem may occur while inversely converting the enhanced CIELAB color components to the RGB color space. Therefore, we introduce a color gamut adjustment to cope with this problem. In the color gamut adjustment, the chroma is changed while preserving the enhanced lightness and the hue so that the inversely converted CIELAB color components will exist inside the color gamut of the RGB color space. To illustrate the effectiveness of this method, experiments, using several digital images, are conducted.
