Abstract:Background Epidemiology is considered to be the fundamental science of public health and plays an important role in clinical competence and professional development. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a short-term course for the teaching of epidemiology, which was designed as a community-based class for medical students. Method This course was designed according to Kern’s six-step approach to curriculum development. A total of 75 undergraduates were recruited. Forty-one students were assigned to an experimental group engaged in theoretical teaching and practical courses, while 34 students were assigned to the control group only taking theoretical courses. All participants were asked to complete a pre- and post-course survey and to take a test after completing the course. The scores between the experimental and control groups were compared using the Wilcoxon test. Result The experimental group showed significantly higher self-assessment scores in course understanding ( p = 0.0126) and clinical practice skills ( p = 0.0005) after completing the course, while no significant difference was observed in the control group. In addition, students in the experimental group reported significantly higher interest ( p = 0.0015), stronger learning motivation ( p = 0.0113) and a better mastery of epidemiology ( p = 0.0167) after completing the course than those in the control group. However, test scores ( p = 0.0859) and pass rates ( p = 0.1755) demonstrated no statistical significance between the two groups. Conclusion The short-term practical course in epidemiology exerted significantly positive effects on the improvement of student learning enthusiasm, course understanding and clinical practice skills. These findings provide new ideas and statistical evidence for the development of epidemiological instruction. Future studies should explore how to more widely and optimally apply community-based courses to the teaching of epidemiology.
Effectiveness Evaluation of the National Community Nursing Teacher Training Based on Kirkpatrick Model

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of the national community nursing teacher training based on Kirkpatrick model.Methods We conducted a questionnaire survey in three groups (2011 group 39 cases, 2014 group 34 cases and 2016 group 35 cases) of selected trainees (totaled 117 cases) with the experience of attending the national community nursing teacher training held in Zhejiang General Practice Training Center in 2011, 2014 or 2016. The survey achieved a response rate of 92.3％ (108/117). And a Kirkpatrick model was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the training from the aspects of reaction, learning, behavior and results.Results Overall, 24 (61.5％) trainees in 2011 group, 26 (76.5％) trainees in 2014 group , and 29 (82.9％) trainees in 2016 group were very satisfied with this training. The levels of satisfaction with training goals, teaching methods or trainers differed significantly between the three groups of trainees (P<0.05), while the overall assessment of the training, level of satisfaction with teaching contents, training hours, training materials or examination forms did not (P>0.05). The assessment of the training's role in the improvement of scientific research capabilities varied significantly between the three groups (P<0.05), but its role in the improvement of professional competence, teaching capability, promotion of the position and professional and technical title did not (P>0.05). The percentage of trainees undertaking community nursing education,organizing or participating in community nursing teaching differed substantially between the groups (P<0.05), whereas that of trainees organizing the development of community nursing discipline or conducted the development of excellent courses related to community nursing did not (P>0.05). The total number of trainees who were involved in on-the-job community nurse training was 61 (56.5％), including 31 (79.5％) in 2011 group, 16 (47.1％) in 2014 group,and 14 (40.0％) in 2016 group. The total number of trainees who served as a training teacher for local on-the-job community nurse training was 23 (37.7％), including 11 (28.2％) in 2011 group,8 (23.5％) in 2014 group,and 4 (11.4％) in 2016 group.Conclusion The trainings achieved good effects and high level of trainees' satisfaction. The training improved the trainees' scientific research capability about community nursing. However, when trainees went back to work, they made little contribution to the local community nursing teaching.
A case study: a continuous improvement project of lecturing skills for clinical teachers in Chinese residency standardized training

Abstract:Abstract Background Aiming at the poor quality of small lectures due to the lack of lecturing skills of the clinical teachers in residency standardized training, the Teaching and Training Department of Shanghai East Hospital set up a continuous improvement project of lecturing skills for the clinical teachers to search for effective ways to improve lecture quality, then the effect was evaluated. Methods Based on the ADDIE model of training design, the department conducted the project in accordance with a process of analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. A special course “Clinical Teacher Presentation Training” (CTPT) was developed to convey and train the 5 key behaviors in presentation to improving lecture quality of the clinical teachers. Ninety-nine clinical teachers who give lectures to the residents were recruited as subjects for the project. Adopted the model of “intensive training + practice transference” to strengthen lecturing skills, and applied the Kirkpatrick Four Levels to evaluate the effect of the project from multi-role and multi-stage. Results The training satisfaction of the CTPT course from the subjects reaches 100%. The subjects have a high degree of knowledge acquisition through CTPT and the knowledge of the 5 key behaviors has been actually used in their lectures at the stage of practice transference. Comparing the data before training and after transference, it is found that the average increasing of the subjects’ 5 key behavior scores made by teaching secretaries is 14.12 points (14.12%) and that of the subjects’ self-efficacy scores is 9.31 points (9.31%); the performance values were modeling based on the scores from different types of evaluators and increased by an average of 12.61 points (12.61%); and the star ratings of the overall performance increased by an average of 1.17 points (23.4%). The results showed statistically difference ( P < 0.001). Conclusions The project effectively promoted the improvement of the clinical teachers’ lecturing skills and the quality of small lectures.

Effect of the International Pharmacy Education Programs: A Pilot Evaluation Based on Kirkpatrick's Model.

Abstract:Globalization has attracted much attention to universities over the past decade. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the United States-China international pharmacy education programs (IPEP) in China. Kirkpatrick's model of evaluation was used to evaluate IPEP from reaction and learning levels. In the reaction level, a questionnaire survey with a Likert scale was used. In the learning level, data from "Assessment Record of Advanced Clinical Pharmacy Practice of Peking University" were collected. Cronbach' alpha coefficient of reliability was calculated, principal component analysis and independentt-test were conducted. All of the students who attended IPEP (n = 36) completed the questionnaire survey. The scores of benefits were increased in 4 categories, including "Clinical practice competency improvement" (mean ranking [MR] = 3.11 points), "Understanding of doctor of Pharmacy education mode" (MR = 3.48 points), "English competency improvement" (MR = 3.64 points) and "International collaboration" (MR = 3.92 points). Meanwhile, the overall satisfaction was relatively high with the IPEP (MR = 4.22 points). In the learning level, a total of 22 records was obtained. Students who attended (n = 5) the IPEP achieved higher scores than those did not attend (n = 17) in the assessment records, although no statistical significant differences were observed. Personal in-depth interviews further supported the overall benefit of IPEP. The Kirkpatrick model of evaluation can be used for IPEP. The benefit and satisfaction of students attended the IPEP were high in the reaction level; even though no statistically significant difference was shown in the learning level, higher scores were still demonstrated.
Evaluation of General Practice Mentors Training in Zhejiang Province

Abstract:By questionnaire we conducted a cluster sampling survey on 150 general practice meutors in Zhejiang province who completed training program during November 2011 to May 2013.By using Kirkpatrick's four level evaluation methods,we evaluated the training program based on the response level,learning level and behavior level.A total of 141 valid questionnaires were collected.The results showed that 92.2％ of participants (130/141) were satisfied with the training contents,94.3％ (133/141) were satisfied with the teachers,87.9％ (124/141) were satisfied with the training environment,83.7％ (118/141) thought the training contents useful,and 89.4％ (126/141) were satisfied with the training organization.Only 31.2％ (44/141) of participants mastered the knowledge and skills of general practice before training,and the figure increased to 87.2％ (123/141) after training.The results also showed that 67.3％ (95/141) of participants were able to use the knowledge acquired in the training,and 81.6％ (115/141) of them were able to apply the concept of general practice in their teaching practice.These results indicate that general practice mentors are satisfied with the training in the aspects of response,learning and behavior,aud the training program would play a positive role in promoting their performance in teaching practice.

Abstract:Abstract Since their implementation in China’s tertiary education system two decades ago, EMI programmes have been reported largely less successful and more problematic than envisioned. Although portrayed as killing two birds with one stone , whereby both subject content learning and English language proficiency can be achieved in the same classroom, EMI has in reality been revealed to present a series of thorny problems, from teaching quality to learning achievements, from teachers’ insufficient language proficiency to students’ unsatisfactory academic outcomes. This paper addresses one of the critical issues in EMI implementation: what teachers need in order to bring about successful language learning as well as adequate subject content learning. Data sources include a questionnaire collected from different disciplinary programmes across universities in China ( n = 158), and interviews of nine lecturers from both key and non-key universities. The results suggest that the needs of these EMI lecturers cover a variety of areas, including institutional support as well as needs for professional and pedagogical training. Our findings indicate that there are similarities and differences in teacher needs between key and non-key universities with regard to institutional support and training programmes. The findings suggest that epistemic environments as well as goal-oriented pedagogical activities and adequate discourse strategies are necessary to enhance the learning experience of the students, facilitate the integration of content and language learning, and empower teachers and students to identify the best classroom practices. The needs analysis is instrumental for developing both in-service and pre-service training programmes for EMI implementation in higher education and crucial if the goal of ‘ killing of two birds with one stone ’ is to be achieved.

Abstract:BackgroundIncreasingly, non-English speaking countries use English as the medium of instruction (EMI) to teach academic subjects. This study investigated the challenges and adaptation strategies of teachers and students in an EMI medical education program in China.MethodsData were collected on EMI and non-EMI students’ test performances and student and teacher perceptions of the program. Test scores and survey results were analyzed using SPSS. Focus group transcripts and open-ended comments from surveys were examined using thematic coding.ResultsThere were no significant differences in admission and graduation test scores for EMI and non-EMI students. Four challenges with the EMI program were identified: (1) insufficient/inappropriate teaching materials, (2) unsatisfactory teaching, (3) inadequate class interactions, and (4) failure to teach medical humanities. To address these challenges, teachers and students used adaptive strategies, such as the use of alternative textbooks, self-learning skills and Chinese language.ConclusionsEMI programs are difficult to initiate, requiring faculty development and institutional support, and student self and peer group learning strategies to be successful. The adaptive strategies employed by both students and teachers offer insights into how other EMI programs might strengthen their implementation.

Abstract:With English-medium instruction (EMI) as a pedagogical strategy being practiced worldwide in higher education (HE), extensive research has explored stakeholders’ attitudes toward, and perceived benefits and challenges of EMI based on self-report data. However, the actual effectiveness of EMI on students’ subject content and English language learning achievements tested with objective measures has accrued little evidence. This meta-analysis synthesized 44 independent samples (32 in medical disciplines) from 36 studies. The results show that EMI students performed significantly better in both subject content and English learning than students in Chinese-medium courses, but it should be noted that the difference in content learning was found only with students from medical disciplines. Discipline was the only significant factor moderating content learning, while disciplines, research design, and instruction time in English significantly moderated English learning. The findings provide implications for implementing EMI in similar contexts and highlight the importance of rigorous future research to examine the benefits of EMI.

Abstract:The globalisation of higher institutions has led to the emergence of EMI courses offered by faculty with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Existing literature has revealed that the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of English language teachers affect their teaching behaviour. However, this issue is relatively under-explored among EMI content teachers. This study explored 101 Chinese undergraduate students' perceptions of two categories of content teachers – native English-speaking EMI teachers and local (non-native English-speaking) EMI teachers – regarding their teaching behaviour and practices. Their perceptions were collected via a questionnaire survey and interviews, which were then triangulated by class observation of teachers' actual practices. Specifically, the students perceived that native English-speaking teachers adopted more interactive teaching approaches with diverse activities and various modalities of communication, but lacked intercultural competence. In comparison, local teachers obtained intra-cultural competence and thus could communicate with students about their learning difficulties. Their instruction was more intelligible but rather teacher-dominated. Students favoured interactive and efficient EMI courses with a primary focus on content. The findings provide insights for the implementation of the EMI curriculum and the development of EMI teachers' expertise.

Abstract:Multiwalled as well as single-walled carbon nanotubes are conveniently prepared by the pyrolysis of organometallic precursors such as metallocenes and phthalocyanines in a reducing atmosphere. More importantly, pyrolysis of organometallics alone or in mixture with hydrocarbons yields aligned nanotube bundles with useful field emission and hydrogen storage properties. By pyrolysis of organometallics in the presence of thiophene, Y-junction nanotubes are obtained in large quantities. The Y-junction tubes have a good potential in nanoelectronics. Carbon nanotubes prepared from organometallics are useful to prepare nanowires and nanotubes of other materials such as BN, GaN, SiC, and Si(3)N(4).

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the effects of the training for the new graduate students of major of health services management by using the Kirkpatrick model and to provide suggestions for optimizing the training scheme.Methods:The questionnaire survey including 32 new graduate students and the focus group interview including 2 teachers and 5 students were conducted.The Kirkpatrick model was applied to assess the effects of the training for the new graduate students through the four levels of reaction,learning,behavior and results.Results:The recognition proportion of the importance and necessity of the training for new students was 81.3％.The training courses were well perceived,which enabled the new graduate students to adapt to the new environment,integrate into the research team and master the basic research skills more quickly.Conclusion:The training has achieved positive effects through the evaluation of the Kirkpatrick model,which could be improved in time schedule and course arrangement.
English medium instruction in China's higher education: teachers' perspectives of competencies, certification and professional development

Abstract:Despite the increasing popularity of English Medium Instruction (EMI) for academic subject teaching in China, there is little research regarding the competencies that an EMI teacher needs for effective EMI course delivery and professional development (PD) in the higher education (HE) context. No research has investigated how those can be recognised through certain kinds of certification. This study fills the gap by investigating teachers' perspectives on competencies, certification and PD of EMI in relation to China through 133 survey returns and 12 semi-structured interviews. Our findings show that teachers have a generally positive attitude on EMI certification and PD programmes though few universities have made either a priority. Competencies required for effective EMI teaching include not only English proficiency and teaching skills through L2 but also skills of instruction in respective academic disciplines. This poses challenges for the design and implementation of EMI PD leading to teacher certification. The lack of official government involvement (at policy level) and institutional involvement (evaluation and faculty promotion) further complicates this issue in a country like China with a top-heavy bureaucracy.
Effect of and satisfaction with www.elearnSCI.org for training of nurse students: a submodule pilot study

Abstract:Study design: Interventional training session. Objective: To investigate the effect and satisfaction with didactic training using printed text of a submodule of www.elearnSCI.org for nurse students and to assess the answers of each question. Setting: A Peking University teaching hospital. Methods: Twenty-eight nurse students in two groups (14 in each) were involved. Only group A received a translated print-out of the slides from the 'Nursing management' submodule in www.elearnSCI.org for 1-h self-study before the class. At the beginning of class, both groups were tested using the self assessment questions. Then, a lecture according to the content of this submodule was carried out and afterwards both groups answered the self assessment questions again. Finally, both groups filled in a training course satisfaction questionnaire. Results: At the beginning of the class, the mean score (max 9) of the self assessment in group A was 7.1 ± 1.1, which was significantly higher than that in group B (4.9 ± 1.7, P = 0.001). After the lecture, the mean score of the self assessment in group A had insignificantly increased to 7.4 ± 1.3, whereas in group B it increased significantly to 6.9 ± 0.8 (P < 0.001). The mean score (max 50) of the training course satisfaction questionnaire was 42.8 ± 5.2. Sixty-four percentage of the students indicated that they were very satisfied (overall score ⩾ 42) with the training and no students were unsatisfied (overall score < 30). Conclusion: Self-study and lecture presentation are effective methods for training the content of www.elearnSCI.org to nurse students. The training satisfaction of this submodule within the www.elearnSCI.org is favorable.

Abstract:Background: The WHO has proclaimed that palliative care (PC) should be integrated as a routine element of all undergraduate medical and nursing education. The EDUPALL Erasmus+project produced a PC curriculum for undergraduate medical education based on the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) recommendations for undergraduate training. This was tested in four Romanian Faculties of Medicine: Universities of Transilvania, Iasi, Targu Mures, and Timisoara. The aim of this study is to describe teachers' satisfaction and views on the effectiveness of the EDUPALL curriculum and supporting learning materials. Methods: We conducted nine semistructured interviews with teachers involved in EDUPALL implementation in their universities. Interviews were transcribed and collected data underwent thematic analysis. Kirkpatrick's four-level evaluation model of training was employed to synthesize the outcomes into final categories of reaction, learning, behavior, and results. Results: Data were categorized against Kirkpatrick's four levels as follows: Level 1 (Reaction) EDUPALL curriculum-a good standard with achievable goals; Level 2 (Learning) Personal appraisal and development needs of the teaching faculty; Level 3 (Behavior) Application of competencies and student feedback; and Level 4 (Results): Faculty- and country-level Impact of the EDUPALL project. Conclusion: EDUPALL curriculum is a good and adaptive model to teach PC at Faculties of Medicine, considered by teachers as a way of bridging an existing training gap for medical students in building essential competencies in symptom management, communication, spirituality, and self-awareness.
What Makes an Effective English-Medium Course in China? Experiences and Perspectives of International Undergraduates

Abstract:This research explores international English majors’ experiences and perceptions of the characteristics of an effective English-as-a-medium-of-instruction (EMI) course. Through an analysis of the triangulated data collected through questionnaire surveys, classroom observations, interviews and correspondences between 45 students and their lecturer in an EMI course at a key comprehensive university in Beijing, this study found that international English majors viewed the lecturer’s English proficiency, personality, commitment to students and to teaching, teaching approach, and language use as the major factors contributing to EMI course effectiveness. Meanwhile, these students did not consider their own English proficiency as crucial to the effectiveness of EMI courses, and neither did they expect EMI courses to improve their English ability.
Training in psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy for medical doctors in China: A field report

Abstract:Background The high prevalence rates of mental disorders in China contrast a comparatively low care capacity from qualified trained medical doctors in the mental health field. The main objective of our cooperation project was to develop and implement advanced postgraduate training for medical doctors for their acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes in the field of psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy in China. Methods Monitoring and evaluation as part of the advanced training in Beijing were conducted following the Kirkpatrick training approach using four levels of evaluation: reaction, learning, behavior and results. We performed a continuous course evaluation, assessed the respective learning goal attainment, conducted a pre-post evaluation of reasons and goals for participation in the training, and measured the treatment effects on the patient side. Results The implementation of training standards in the field of psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy for medical doctors and the transfer of didactic knowledge and skills for Chinese lecturers were achieved. A total of 142 mainly medical doctors attended the 2-year training. Ten medical doctors were trained as future teachers. All learning goals were reached. The content and didactics of the curriculum were rated with an overall grade of 1.23 (1 = very good to 5 = very bad). The highest rated elements were patient life interviews, orientation on clinical practice and communication skills training. The achievement of learning objectives for each block (depression, anxiety disorders, somatic symptom disorder, coping with physical diseases) was rated between 1 and 2 (1 = very well achieved to 5 = not achieved) for all items from participants’ perspectives. On the patient side (n = 415), emotional distress decreased and quality of life and the doctor–patient alliance improved significantly. Discussion Advanced training in psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy was successfully implemented. The results of the evaluation show high participant satisfaction and the successful achievement of all learning objectives. A more detailed and extensive evaluation of the data, such as an analysis of the development of the participants as psychotherapists, is in preparation. The continuation of the training under Chinese guidance is guaranteed.

This misalignment results in student disengagement and falls short of addressing the real-world demands of the medical profession. With the growing importance of English proficiency in the global health sector, the need for significant improvements in medical English education is evident. This study delves into the underlying causes of student demotivation and aims to reconcile educational delivery with the evolving expectations of the medical field. Insights gained from this research will inform targeted interventions, promising to enhance medical English courses and support improved educational experiences for Chinese medical undergraduates. Approach: This cross-sectional quantitative study surveyed 3,046 second-year medical students from four medical universities in Guangdong Province, China, leveraging means-analysis and Expectancy-Disconfirmation Theory (EDT) as its foundation. The research was conducted at the end of the 2022-2023 academic year, utilizing a questionnaire to assess students' perceptions of their medical English courses. Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) was the primary analytical tool to discern discrepancies between students' expectations and experiences. Findings: The IPA revealed that course content, classroom environment, and instructor effectiveness were pivotal factors influencing the perceived quality of the medical English courses. Students expressed a need for practical and relevant course material, with current content and textbooks falling short of preparing them for future medical communication demands. Additionally, while learning technologies were acknowledged, there was a discernible preference against their excessive application, suggesting a misalignment between student satisfaction and learning outcomes. Insights: This study highlights the need for innovative staffing models, refined qualifications for part-time instructors, development of collaborative and practical teaching materials, and focused training for medical English instructors. It also emphasizes the judicious integration of e-learning to enhance the learning experience. These insights aim to improve instruction quality by informing potential pedagogical adjustments and resource allocations in medical English education.
Exploring challenges in academic language-related skills of EFL learners in Chinese EMI settings

Abstract:Chinese universities have placed increasing emphasis, on incorporating English as a medium of instruction (EMI) courses to enhance their competitiveness both nationally and internationally. However, the successful implementation of these courses requires learners to acquire content knowledge. To promote EMI courses, specific initiatives and policies have been put in place by universities reflecting a trend in the globalization of higher education and the growing demand for English proficiency in academic settings. Despite the attention given to education in Chinese society, many learners are not adequately prepared to overcome challenges associated with EMI classes. This leads to inefficiencies and drawbacks within the educational system. For instance, some learners struggle with understanding subject matter due to language barriers or encounter difficulties fully engaging with course materials because of language related challenges. This study aims to fill a significant research gap by providing a comprehensive exploration of the main challenges faced by learners in the Chinese EMI context and by highlighting the crucial contribution of EMI courses to China's higher education competitiveness internationally. By identifying factors and variables that can predict success in EMI contexts, particularly by studying learners' academic language-related skills as potential predictors of EMI success, this study offers novel insights into the impact of EMI courses on China's position in the global academic arena. A total of 361 male and female EFL learners participated in the study and completed the EMI Challenges Scale. The data analysis, including descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression, revealed that writing, reading, and listening skills significantly predicted success in EMI. Writing emerged as the best predictor, explaining 28.19 % of the variance in EMI success, followed by reading (19.54 %). The results of this study contribute to current debates on international affairs of higher education by not only illustrating the problems students face in EMI courses, but also providing important suggestions for improving the learning environment on EMI language in China. This leads to ongoing debates about the globalization of higher education and the need for English proficiency in academic settings. In addition, the results of this study are useful for teachers and policy makers; it emphasizes the importance of improving EMI learners' writing, reading, and listening skills in EMI learners to enhance their success in academic settings. In particular, they may consider implementing language development programs and provide EMI learners with additional support to improve their writing, reading and listening skills. This study also highlights the need for appropriate support and resources to address the specific language challenges faced by EMI students, paving the way for better instructional strategies and guidelines in Chinese EMI terms.
Teacher-Student Interaction for English-Medium Instruction (EMI) Content and Language Learning and the Effects of Implementing Multimodal Input of Classroom Interaction: University Students’ Perceptions

Abstract:The discourse of interaction, Initiation-Response-Feedback (I-R-F) gained its popularity by fostering discussion between the teacher and learners but received critics for developing interactive communication in a controlled manner. With an attempt to provide pragmatic implications for EMI instructors, the study probed into perceptions of students (n=42) from different majors on how two pedagogical approaches (i.e., the I-R-F and the multimodal input of classroom interaction) differed in one EMI Cross-cultural Communication course in one middle-ranked university in Taiwan. The comparative, quasi-experiment research firstly investigated these students’ perceptions of teacher-student interaction for EMI content and language learning and secondly compared their perceptions on the implementation of the multimodal input of classroom interaction against the conventional baseline, the I-R-F. Both quantitative (i.e., survey) and qualitative (i.e., post-lesson student reflection journals and audio recordings) research methods were used. The survey results showed that these students were inclined to engage in extensive and substantial verbal output, expressed the importance of teacher-student interaction for learning the content of the course, and expected chances of lengthy verbal output and corrective feedback from the instructor. The results from students’ journals yielded that the instructor’s use of the multimodal input of classroom interaction significantly outperformed the use of the I-R-F in the categories of effectiveness, the level of student engagement, and the effectiveness of helping them learn the content. Ultimately, it was found that the use of the multimodal input of classroom interaction had triggered their higher-order of cognitive processing more (i.e., analyzing, evaluating, and creating).
