Abstract:Here we quantitatively evaluate the early stages of mechanical and morphological changes of polished human enamel surfaces induced by soft drinks using atomic force microscopy. With an increase of the immersion time in soft drinks, we found a significant increase of surface roughness (Ra) and a considerable decrease of elastic modulus (E) of the enamel. The prismatic structure of enamel was clearly observed after a one-hour immersion in Coca-Cola, which shows its strong erosion effect. A high surface roughness of enamel results in a high chance of cavities due to easier bacterial adhesion on rougher surface, while a drastic deterioration of the mechanical properties of the enamel weakens its protection property. Our findings show the variation of enamel surface at the very beginning stage of etching process by acidic drinks, which can also be applicable to the etching mechanism of enamel surface by other sources.

Effects of Acidic Environments on Dental Structures after Bracket Debonding

Abstract:Brackets are metallic dental devices that are very often associated with acidic soft drinks such as cola and energy drinks. Acid erosion may affect the bonding between brackets and the enamel surface. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of brackets’ adhesion, in the presence of two different commercially available drinks. Sixty human teeth were divided into six groups and bonded with either resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGIC) or resin composite (CR). A shared bond test (SBS) was evaluated by comparing two control groups with four other categories, in which teeth were immersed in either Coca-ColaTM or Red BullTM energy drink. The debonding between the bracket and enamel was evaluated by SEM. The morphological aspect correlated with SBS results showed the best results for the samples exposed to artificial saliva. The best adhesion resistance to the acid erosion environment was observed in the group of teeth immersed in Red BullTM and with brackets bonded with RMGIC. The debonded structures were also exposed to Coca-ColaTM and Red BullTM to assess, by atomic force microscopy investigation (AFM), the erosive effect on the enamel surface after debonding and after polishing restoration. The results showed a significant increase in surface roughness due to acid erosion. Polishing restoration of the enamel surface significantly reduced the surface roughness that resulted after debonding, and inhibited acid erosion. The roughness values obtained from polished samples after exposure to Coca-ColaTM and Red BullTM were significantly lower in that case than for the debonded structures. Statistical results evaluating roughness showed that Red BullTM has a more erosive effect than Coca-ColaTM. This result is supported by the large contact surface that resulted after debonding. In conclusion, the prolonged exposure of the brackets to acidic drinks affected the bonding strength due to erosion propagation into both the enamel–adhesive interface and the bonding layer. The best resistance to acid erosion was obtained by RMGIC.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The consumption of acidified beverages, associated with lower mineralization of primary enamel, is the ideal combination for the development and progression of dental erosion. The objective of this study is to analyze the erosive capacity and the surface roughness of primary teeth enamel after exposure to three different brands of grape juices.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty enamel blocks of primary teeth were obtained, attened and polished. They were submitted to initial surface roughness analysis (baseline), and randomly assigned into four groups (n = 10): NAT: natural grape juice (Campo Largo); IND: industrialized grape juice (Dell Vale Kapo); SOY: soy-based grape juice (Ades); and CONT (control): artificial saliva. Blocks were immersed for 2 min, 3 times per day, for 9 days. During the whole time of the experiment, the enamel blocks were stored in artificial saliva. After the 9 days, the roughness parameters were determined again. The beverages were analyzed for pH and titratable acidity. Data were statistically analyzed (α = 0.05).RESULTS: The surface roughness did not differ significantly among groups (p > 0.05). However, after the immersion in the different grape juices, the surface roughness values increased significantly (p< 0.05). The pH values were weakly correlated to acidity values; NAT showed the highest titratable acidity values than the other juices (p<0.05).CONCLUSIONS: Although the surface roughness values of the experimental groups did not differ from the control group, there was a difference in initial and final roughness in all groups. Grape juices, especially natural, may have an erosive capacity, changing the surface roughness of primary dental enamel. Key words:Dental erosion, beverages, enamel, roughness.
Impact of modified acidic soft drinks on enamel erosion

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the enamel erosive potential of modified acidic soft drinks under controlled conditions in an artificial mouth. Materials and methods: From each of 144 bovine incisors one enamel sample was prepared. Labial surfaces of the samples were ground flat, polished and covered with adhesive tape, leaving an exposed area. The samples were distributed among four (A-D) groups for treatment with A: Coca-Cola, B: Sprite; C: Sprite light, D: orange juice. Either 1.0 mmol l(-1) calcium (Ca) or a combination (comb.) of 0.5 mmol l(-1) calcium plus 0.5 mmol l(-1) phosphate plus 0.031 mmol l(-1) fluoride was added to the beverages. Samples of each group were subdivided into three subgroups (-original; -Ca and -comb.) for treatment with original and modified drinks. De- and remineralization cycles were based on a standard protocol described earlier. Surface loss of the specimens was determined using profilometry after test procedure. Results: In all subgroups, loss of enamel was observed. The enamel loss recorded for the samples rinsed with original Sprite and original orange juice was significantly higher compared with all other solutions (P = 0.001). Lowest enamel loss was recorded for the original Coca-Cola group (P = 0.001). With the exception of Coca-Cola, demineralization with the modified beverages led to significantly lower losses compared with the respective original solutions. Conclusion: Modification of the test soft drinks with low concentrations of calcium or a combination of calcium, phosphate and fluoride may exert a significant protective potential with respect to dental erosion.
Erosive effect of industrialized fruit juices exposure in enamel and dentine substrates: An in vitro study

Abstract:Background: Erosive tooth wear has been a highly prevalent and emerging phenomenon related to eating habits of the population. Aim: This study sought to investigate industrialized fruit juices exposure in enamel and dentine substrates in terms of erosive effect. Material and methods: Human enamel and dentine specimens were randomized into 8 groups (n=8): Grape juice - Ades®, Grape juice - Del Valle Kapo®, Grape juice - Aurora®, Orange juice - Del Valle Kapo®, Orange juice - Ades®, Strawberry juice - Mais Vita®, Strawberry juice - Ades®, Citrus fruit juice - Tampico®. Specimens were submitted to an in vitro erosive challenge and to a microhardness test to evaluate the percentage of surface microhardness loss. The pH, titratable acidity, buffering capacity, degree of saturation and critical pH concerning hydroxyapatite and fluorapatite of the juices were measured as well as their composition of calcium, phosphate, fluoride, and total protein. Data were submitted to the analysis of variance and multivariate linear regression (α=0.05). Results: All test agents were undersaturated concerning hydroxyapatite and fluorapatite. A significant interaction between the type of juice and substrate was found (α=0.000, β=0.99). However, Orange juice - Del Valle Kapo®, Orange juice - Ades®, and Strawberry juice - Mais Vitta® demonstrated no difference between substrates. Grape juice - Ades® promoted less mineral than other juices in enamel and dentine. The calcium concentration in juices was a protective variable for microhardness loss in both substrates. Conclusions: The erosive effect of industrialized fruit juices affects enamel differently from dentine, and this effect differed between some, but not all, tested juices. Abstract:The present in vitro study was aimed at evaluating the morphological changes in the cemento‐enamel junction (CEJ) after exposure to acidic beverages using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The initial pH and titratable acidity (TA) was analyzed from follow groups: (I) Coca cola, (II) orange juice, (III) Cedevita, (IV) Red Bull, (V) Somersby cider, and (VI) white wine. The CEJ samples (n = 64), obtained from unerupted third molars, were allocated to one control (artificial saliva, n = 16) and six experimental groups (n = 8). The experimental samples were immersed in beverages (50 ml) for 15 min, three times daily, 10 days, and in artificial saliva between immersions. SEM analysis was performed in a blind manner, according to scoring scale. One‐way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc tests, as well as Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U test used for statistical analysis. The pH values of the acidic beverages ranged from 2.65 (Coca cola) to 3.73 (orange juice), and TA ranged from 1.90 ml (Coca cola) to 5.70 ml (orange juice) of NaOH to reach pH 7.0. The SEM analysis indicated statistically significant differences between the control samples and those immersed in acidic beverages. The Groups IV, I, and II, showed the highest CEJ damage grade while those of the Group VI were the lowest. All the tested acidic beverages caused morphological changes in the CEJ with a smaller or larger exposure of dentine surface, and were not always related to the pH or TA of acidic beverages.

Abstract:Excessive consumption of acidic drinks and foods contributes to tooth erosion. The aims of the present in vitro study were twofold: (1) to assess the erosive potential of different dietary substances and medications; (2) to determine the chemical properties with an impact on the erosive potential. We selected sixty agents: soft drinks, an energy drink, sports drinks, alcoholic drinks, juice, fruit, mineral water, yogurt, tea, coffee, salad dressing and medications. The erosive potential of the tested agents was quantified as the changes in surface hardness (ΔSH) of enamel specimens within the first 2 min (ΔSH 2–0 = SH 2 min − SH baseline ) and the second 2 min exposure (ΔSH 4–2 = SH 4 min − SH 2 min ). To characterise these agents, various chemical properties, e.g. pH, concentrations of Ca, P i and F, titratable acidity to pH 7·0 and buffering capacity at the original pH value (β), as well as degree of saturation (p K − p I ) with respect to hydroxyapatite (HAP) and fluorapatite (FAP), were determined. Erosive challenge caused a statistically significant reduction in SH for all agents except for coffee, some medications and alcoholic drinks, and non-flavoured mineral waters, teas and yogurts ( P < 0·01). By multiple linear regression analysis, 52 % of the variation in ΔSH after 2 min and 61 % after 4 min immersion were explained by pH, β and concentrations of F and Ca ( P < 0·05). pH was the variable with the highest impact in multiple regression and bivariate correlation analyses. Furthermore, a high bivariate correlation was also obtained between (p K − p I ) HAP , (p K − p I ) FAP and ΔSH.

Inhibition of Acetyl‐ and Butyrylcholinesterase and Amylase Release from Canine Pancreas

Abstract:There are two tissue-fixed cholinesterases in dog pancreas: acetyl-cholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase. In the present experiments, an organophosphate that only inhibits butyrylcholinesterase (isopropylpyrophosphoramide, or iso-OMPA) was compared with echothiophate and a nonorganophosphate compound, physostigmine. The latter two agents inhibit both cholinesterases. Fresh canine pancreas from anesthetized dogs was minced into fragments and suspended in Eagle's solution gassed with 100% O2. Amylase release was measured by the Phadebas method. In 2-h dose-response studies, there was a fivefold increase in sensitivity to acetylcholine when fragments were preincubated 1 h with iso-OMPA. There was a 1,000-fold increase in sensitivity when fragments were preincubated for 1 h in echothiophate. Basal amylase release in incubates with echothiophate were also increased. In dose-response studies with CCK-8, iso-OMPA was without effect, but echothiophate treatment resulted in a greater total response to CCK-8. There was a corresponding increase in basal output with echothiophate alone. Physostigmine also potentiates the response to CCK-8. Cumulative responses up to 3 h with half-maximal acetylcholine or half-maximal CCK-8 doses showed enhanced total output in fragments preincubated with echothiophate (p < 0.05). The enhancement effect was atropine-sensitive but insensitive to hexamethonium ganglionic blockade. In calcium-free medium, the enhancement with echothiophate was greatly reduced but still present. Inhibitors of both cholinesterases in the pancreas cause a greater total amylase release to sub-maximal doses of acetylcholine and CCK-8 than agents that only inhibit butyrylcholinesterase. Though our data do not provide direct proof, the results could be explained by a greater accumulation of endogenous acetylcholine when both cholinesterases are inhibited.

Abstract:Objectives The relative effect of pH and titratable acidity on tooth erosion remains unclear. We determined the effect of both properties on in vivo salivary pH recovery and on enamel and dentine early erosion in situ. Methods Solutions simulating acidic beverages with different pHs (2.5 or 3.5) and titratable acidities (0, 25, or 100 mM citric acid) were tested. In an in vivo study ( n = 20 participants), the salivary pH was determined before, during, and up to 2 min after exposure to the tested solutions. In situ, 12 participants exposed enamel and root dentine slabs to the tested solutions simulating a beverage consumption; early erosion was assessed by percentage of surface hardness loss (%SHL). Groups were compared by ANOVA ( p < 0.05). Results Saliva pH was lower after exposure to solutions at pH 2.5, irrespective of titratable acidity; pH recovery took longer for solutions with higher titratable acidities, irrespective of their pHs. In situ, the highest %SHL was observed for the solution with lower pH and higher titratable acidities. The addition of citric acid increased the %SHL by 2.5–3 times in enamel, and at least 5 times in dentine. Conclusions Both pH and titratable acidity may play a role on the erosive potential of acidic beverages. Clinical relevance Acidic beverages with lower pHs promote erosion by an initial acid etching of the surface; those with a higher titratable acidity slow down the salivary pH recovery. Both properties contribute to the overall erosive potential.

Abstract:The primary objective of this in vitro study was to investigate the erosive potential of enamel under the use of clear aligners (CA), by simulating in vivo conditions experienced by patients who do not remove their CA during the consumption of acidic beverages. In addition, the difference in erosion protection conferred by artificial and human saliva was also evaluated. Sound-extracted human premolars ( n = 20) had half of their surfaces protected with acid-resistant nail polish and were randomly distributed into two experimental groups ( n = 10): teeth immersed in human saliva or artificial saliva. All teeth had half of their lingual surfaces enclosed by a CA device. The erosive challenges consisted of individual immersion of each sample in citrus acid three times a day, intermediated by immersion in human saliva or artificial saliva for 2 h, during ten days of the erosive protocol. The enamel mineral content was analyzed by high-resolution microtomography. The differential mineral concentration profiles were obtained by subtracting the profile of the mineral concentration of the exposed area and enamel under the CA area from the respective sound area (control). In addition, enamel wear and enamel volume loss were measured. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was also performed to analyze the enamel surface. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA, followed by the Student-Newman-Keuls test. The enamel wear was higher in teeth immersed in artificial saliva, when compared to human saliva ( p < 0.001). The volume loss of the exposed enamel area was lower for tooth immersed in human saliva than in artificial saliva ( p < 0.001), during the acid challenge protocol. The use of CA during acid challenges promoted wear and mineral loss of dental enamel, being these changes more pronounced on the enamel surface under the CA. These results open a new path for the development of further studies adopting clinical protocols that promote more accurate responses in the clinical practice during orthodontic treatment.

Abstract:Aim and objectives: The study aimed to evaluate and compare the effect of various beverages carbonated drinks, i.e., thumps up, fresh fruit juice (apple and pomegranate) and packaged fruit juice (apple and pomegranate) on tooth surface morphology under scanning electron microscope. Materials and methods: Thirty recently extracted intact caries-free human permanent teeth were disinfected with 5.25% of sodium hypochlorite solution and autoclaved at 240°F, 20 psi pressure for 40 min. Each tooth was sectioned into 4 enamel sections yielding 120 sections which were embedded in resin using a prefabricated mold. Prepared samples were immersed as Group I - thumps up, Group II - fresh apple juice, Group III - packaged apple juice, Group IV - fresh pomegranate juice, Group V - packaged pomegranate juice, and Group VI - normal saline. Each immersion was done daily for 30 min over 14 days after which samples were scanned under scanning electron microscope (SEM). The data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS Version 23; Chicago Inc., IL, USA). Results: The highest surface roughness was noted in the fresh pomegranate and packaged pomegranate groups with a mean of 2.9000 ± 0.30779 followed by thumbs up group. The greatest mean of cracks was noted in thumbs up group with a mean of 2.500 ± 0.51299 which was significant at P = 0.000. The greatest mean of score was noted in thumbs up group with a mean of 2.3000 ± 0.65695 which was significant at P = 0.000. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that all drinks were erosive in nature with thumps and pomegranate juice showing significantly higher erosiveness than apple juice (P < 0.01).
A Dwi-Phase Fuzzy Control Structure for an Auto-mode Stair Climbing Wheelchair

Abstract:Climbing a flight of stairs using a wheelchair is not as simple as balancing on its two wheels. Stairs climbing involves several phases, to ensure stability and safety in an auto-mode system. The subtle design of a stair climbing wheelchair system consists of three main actuators, a pair of motors, one for acting the wheel and one for chair position. The operation of the system is based on the wheel rotation by lifting and bringing the other pair of wheels over one another on the staircases and vice versa. The challenge resides in an appropriate mechanical design and implementation of robust controller for the system to guarantee stability of the overall wheelchair while performing stair climbing task automatically, with an assistant-free mode. A Dwi-phase fuzzy logic control is introduced in this work and evaluated through virtual environment.
The Effects of Beverages and Surface Treatments on the Color Stability of 3D-Printed Interim Restorations

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the color stability of 3D-printed interim restorations with different surface treatments while immersed in various staining solutions or beverages (artificial saliva, tea, coffee, and wine) for 6 months. Material and methods: An acrylic tooth was prepared for an all-ceramic full-coverage restoration. A laboratory scanner was used to digitize the prepared abutment tooth. A virtual all-ceramic full-coverage restoration was designed on the digitized abutment tooth using a laboratory CAD/CAM software. Eighty abutment teeth and interim restorations were 3D-printed with tooth-colored photopolymerizing resin. The restorations were randomly allocated into two different groups: Polish and Optiglaze. For the Polish group, interim restorations were finished and polished with aluminum oxide finishers/polishers. For the Optiglaze group, one layer of nanofilled, light-polymerizing protective coating was then applied. The 80 printed interim crowns were divided into 4 different groups depending on where they would be immersed: Artificial saliva, coffee, wine, and tea. After the sample allocations, there were 8 experimental groups. Each group was allocated with 10 specimens. Color measurements were obtained using a digital spectrophotometer in conjunction with The CIE L*a*b* system before the immersion and 6 months after the immersion. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test the effects of surface treatment, immersion liquid, and their interaction on ΔE at 6-month post-immersion. Fisher's protected least significant differences (LSD) was used as post hoc test to compare groups differences (α = .05). Results: There were significant effects of surface treatment [F(1,72) = 13.39, p = 0.000], immersion liquid [F(3,72) = 74.18, p = 0.000], and their interaction [F(3,72) = 16.33, p = 0.000] on ΔE at 6-month post-immersion at the α = .05 level. The polish group showed significantly higher ΔE than the Optiglaze group when immersed in coffee (p < 0.001) and wine (p = 0.015). The Optiglaze group showed significantly higher ΔE than the polish group that was immersed in artificial saliva (p < 0.001). The wine group showed higher ΔE than all other immersion liquid groups for both polish and Optiglaze surface treatments (p < 0.001 for all comparisons). ΔL* showed a reduction that was significantly higher than the 2.0 acceptability threshold in the wine-polish (p < 0.001) and wine-Optiglaze (p < 0.001) groups. ΔE showed a color change that was significantly higher than the perceptibility and acceptability thresholds for all the groups under polish surface treatment (p < 0.001). ΔE also showed a color change that was significantly higher than the perceptibility and acceptability thresholds for artificial saliva, tea, and wine under Optiglaze surface treatment (p = 0.004). Conclusions: 3D-printed interim restorations showed significant discoloration after 6-months immersions in the artificial saliva and common beverages (including tea, coffee, and wine). Among all the chromogenic beverages, red wine caused the most significant discoloration on the interim restorations. When 3D-printed interim restorations are needed for extended intraoral service, nano-filled, light polymerizing protective coating can reduce the restoration discoloration caused by chromogenic beverages. The protective effect is most significant against coffee.
Influence of apple juice on human enamel surfaces of the first and second dentition - an in vitro study

Abstract:Dental erosion caused by acidic beverages is common and occurs with increasing tendency. The aim of this in vitro study was to analyse the erosive potential of apple juice on human enamel samples from the first and second dentition. Apple-juice-containing beverages (n = 23) were selected, and pH and buffering capacity were determined. Enamel samples were prepared from impacted, surgically removed wisdom teeth (20 mm superset2) and from deciduous teeth (16 mm superset2). Prepared enamel slices were incubated with a selected apple juice (pH = 3.5) for up to 24 h; the amounts of released calcium were determined colorimetrically, and mean surface roughness (Ra) of the enamel was measured using an optical profilometric device (perthometer, Mahr, Göttingen, Germany). Controls were incubated with a 0.9 % sodium chloride solution under the same conditions (37 degrees C, humidified atmosphere of 5% CO subset2 and 95 % air). The surfaces of the enamel samples were visually examined by CLSM (Leica TCS SP2). The pH-values of the apple juices ranged from 3.3 to 4.2. Incubating the enamel slices (from both dentitions) with a selected apple juice caused a time dependent release of calcium. After 24 h, the primary dentition showed Ca-release values of 0.61 +/- 0.035 mg/ 20 mm superset2 and the second dentition of 0.41 +/- 0.085 mg/ 20 mm superset2; the surface roughness for the primary teeth was 6.8 +/- 1.09 microm and for the second dentition 6.2 +/- 0.41 microm. CLSM show structural changes on all surfaces when compared to the controls. In this in vitro study, the erosive potential of apple juice on teeth of the first and second dentition could be demonstrated. However, it must be considered that numerous modifying factors influence the human enamel surface in vivo; therefore, a direct translation from in-vitro conditions can only be done with caution.
Erosion of CAD/CAM restorative materials and human enamel: An in vitro study

Abstract:This in vitro study used the same frequency and duration of acid contact as a previous in situ/in vivo study to evaluate the effect of erosion on CAD/CAM restorative materials and human enamel and to compare the effects of in vitro and in situ/in vivo acid challenges on CAD/CAM restorative materials and human enamel. The CAD/CAM restorative materials (IPS e.max CAD, Lava Ultimate, and PMMA block) and human enamel were eroded by immersion in 150 ml of cola drink for 14 days (4 <math>×</math> 5 min/day). The surface microhardness and surface roughness of the specimens were measured at baseline (T1), day 7 (T2), and day 14 (T3). The substance losses were measured at T2 and T3. The data were statistically analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni's test (α = 0.05). Erosion significantly decreased the surface microhardness of the CAD/CAM restorative materials and human enamel (all P < 0.001). The overall percentage of surface microhardness loss (%SMHl) of the PMMA block and enamel due to in vitro erosion was significantly higher than that due to in situ/in vivo erosion (P = 0.02 and P < 0.001, respectively). Consistent with in situ/in vivo erosion, the surface roughness and profile of the tested restorative materials remained unchanged after in vitro erosion. A significant increase in the surface roughness and substance loss was observed for enamel after in vitro erosion (all P < 0.001). The overall substance loss of enamel due to in vitro erosion was significantly higher than that due to in situ/in vivo erosion (P < 0.001). In conclusion, erosion decreased the surface microhardness of the CAD/CAM restorative materials and human enamel. Moreover, erosion negatively influenced the substance loss and surface roughness of human enamel. For the substance loss of enamel and %SMHl of PMMA block and enamel, the in vitro erosive effects were approximately 1–2 times greater than the in situ/in vivo effects. However, for the surface roughness and profile of the CAD/CAM restorative materials, no significant difference was found between in vitro and in situ/in vivo erosion.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the staining sensitivity and surface changes in recent composite resins (Herculite Ultra XRV (Kerr, Bolzano, Italy), G-ænial A'CHORD (GC Corp, Tokyo, Japan), and Omnichroma (Yamaguchi, Japan)) when exposed to common beverages such as coffee, red wine, and Coca-Cola. A total of 60 disk-shaped specimens were prepared from three different resin composites (n = 20 each). The specimens were exposed to coffee, red wine, and Coca-Cola for 10 days. Color measurements were taken using a spectrophotometer, and surface morphology and elemental composition were analyzed using SEM and EDS. The SEM and EDS analyses revealed significant changes in the surface morphology and elemental composition of the composites after immersion. Coffee and wine caused significant surface degradation, whereas Coca-Cola resulted in the greatest degree of surface and elemental variations. Color changes (ΔE = 4 ± 0.52) were most notable in Coca-Cola for Herculite Ultra XRV (Kerr, Italy), in red wine for G-ænial A'CHORD (GC Corp, Japan) (ΔE = 12.51 ± 0.38), and in coffee for Omnichroma (Yamaguchi, Japan) (ΔE = 10.85 ± 1.03). The tested beverages significantly affected both the surface condition and the chemical composition of the resin at the surface level. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the effects of common dietary beverages on dental composites.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Erosion of the teeth is a chronic irreversible process leading to loss of surface enamel and even the dentin, in turn causing sensitivity and pain. Increased consumption of carbonated beverages remains a major cause for dental erosion. However, many of the so called safe beverages that are consumed may also have sufficiently low pH to cause dental erosion. One of the parameters to measure the dental erosion is estimation of hardness and surface roughness. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the difference in hardness and surface roughness of enamel and cementum using three beverages namely (carbonated drink, lime soda, lime juice) in deciduous and permanent teeth.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten permanent and three deciduous teeth samples each were kept in lime juice, lime soda, carbonated beverage and tap water. The VHN using Vickers hardness tester and Ra value using surface profilometer were assessed at baseline, 1 day and 10 days.RESULTS: At the end of 10 days the decrease in hardness of enamel of permanent teeth was maximum for teeth immersed in carbonated beverage followed by lime soda and lime juice. However, in the deciduous teeth it was observed that the VHN drop was maximum at 1 day in relation to teeth immersed in carbonated beverage followed by lime juice and lime soda. The hardness of cementum decreased significantly at the end of ten days both in deciduous as well as permanent teeth.CONCLUSIONS: The present study shows that many of the most commonly used beverages like lime juice and lime soda have a sufficiently low pH to cause erosion of the enamel surface as well as that of cementum of both deciduous and permanent teeth. Though protective mechanisms do exist in the oral cavity to neutralize the acids present in these beverages, continuous usage of these beverages leads to irreversible damage to the tooth structure. Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of coffee and red wine staining on tooth color during and after bleaching.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blocks obtained from human molars were divided into 11 groups (n = 5) in accordance with the bleaching treatment-peroxide carbamide 10%, 15% or 20%-and in accordance with the stain therapy-coffee, wine or without staining (control). Color change analysis was performed by photo-reflectance using a spectrophotometer, during (3-times/week) and after (7, 15 and 30 days) the bleaching treatment. During the experiment, the samples were stored in artificial saliva. The results were submitted to statistical analysis with the Dunnet and Tukey tests (p < 0.05).RESULTS: The concentrations of carbamide peroxide (10%, 15% and 20%) did not differ significantly from the control group during bleaching (up to the 22nd day), with (Tukey, p > 0.05) or without storage in pigment solution. After the bleaching, there were statistically significant differences between the groups treated with coffee (30th day) and wine (7th and 30th days) relative to the control, which was treated with whitening agents.CONCLUSION: During bleaching, remineralization of the enamel with artificial saliva and the subsequent bleaching session were effective in preventing enamel staining. After the whitening procedures, both stain therapies-coffee and wine-caused enamel color changes; however, the wine led to greater staining than did coffee.

Abstract:Objective: Beverage acidity has been measured routinely using the pH value. However, titratable acidity is thought to be a true indicator of beverage erosive potential. It has also been reported that experimental addition of calcium in beverages can reduce the progression of erosion. This study was carried out to investigate effects the of pH, titratable acidity and calcium concentration of non alcoholic carbonated beverages on enamel erosion of extracted human premolar teeth. Method: The erosive potential of 13 carbonated beverages and control was characterized based on analysis of pH, titratable acidity, and calcium concentrations. This was followed by ename demineralization tests. Baseline and post-immersion measurements of enamel microhardness were carried out using Vickers microhardness tester. Mean and standard deviation for each parameter was calculated. One way analysis of variance (ANOVA), paired t test, pearson's correlation, and multiple linear stepwise regression analysis were employed for statistical analysis. P values <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Result: Among the beverages, Pepsi had the lowest pH while Sip-on-appy had the highest pH. Titratable acidity was lowest for Limca and highest for Red Bull. Calcium concentration was lowest in Limca and Sprite and highest in Appy fizz. Statistically significant negative correlation between pH and percentage reduction of enamel microhardness, and between calcium concentration and percentage reduction of enamel microhardness was found. Multiple linear stepwise regression analysis revealed pH as the best predictor for erosive potential. Conclusion: All beverages have potential for enamel erosion. Beverages with lower pH and less calcium are more erosive.
