Abstract:Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) is a periodic response to a repetitive visual stimulus at a specific frequency. Currently, SSVEP is widely treated as an attention tag in cognitive activities and is used as an input signal for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). However, whether SSVEP can be used as a reliable indicator has been a controversial issue. We focused on the independence of SSVEP from frequency allocation and number of stimuli. First, a cue-target paradigm was adopted to examine the interaction between SSVEPs evoked by two stimuli with different frequency allocations under different attention conditions. Second, we explored whether signal strength and the performance of SSVEP-based BCIs were affected by the number of stimuli. The results revealed that no significant interaction of SSVEP responses appeared between attended and unattended stimuli under various frequency allocations, regardless of their appearance in the fundamental or second-order harmonic. The amplitude of SSVEP suffered no significant gain or loss under different numbers of stimuli, but the performance of SSVEP-based BCIs varied along with duration of stimuli; that is, the recognition rate was not affected by the number of stimuli when the duration of stimuli was long enough, while the information transfer rate (ITR) presented the opposite trend. It can be concluded that SSVEP is a reliable tool for marking and monitoring multiple stimuli simultaneously in cognitive studies, but much caution should be taken when choosing a suitable duration and the number of stimuli, in order to achieve optimal utility of BCIs in the future.
Narrow band-pass filtered canonical correlation analysis for frequency identification in SSVEP signals

Abstract:Steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) are generated in the parieto-occipital regions, accompanied by background noise and artifacts. A strong pre-processing method is required to reduce this background noise and artifacts. This study proposed a narrow band-pass filtered canonical correlation analysis (NBPFCCA) to recognize frequency components in SSVEP signals. The proposed method is tested on the publicly available 40 stimulus frequencies dataset recorded from 35 subjects and 4 class in-house dataset acquired from 10 subjects. The performance of the proposed NBPFCCA method is compared with the standard canonical correlation analysis (CCA) and the filter bank CCA (FBCCA). The mean frequency detection accuracy of the standard CCA is 86.21% for the benchmark dataset, and it is improved to 95.58% in the proposed method. Results indicate that the proposed method significantly outperforms the standard canonical correlation analysis with an increase of 9.37% and 17% in frequency recognition accuracy of the benchmark and in-house datasets, respectively.
SSVEP-EEG Feature Enhancement Method Using an Image Sharpening Filter

Abstract:Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) is widely used in brain computer interface (BCI), medical detection, and neuroscience, so there is significant interest in enhancing SSVEP features via signal processing for better performance. In this study, an image processing method was combined with brain signal analysis and a sharpening filter was used to extract image details and features for the enhancement of SSVEP features. The results demonstrated that sharpening filter could eliminate the SSVEP signal trend term and suppress its low-frequency component. Meanwhile, sharpening filter effectively enhanced the signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of the single-channel and multi-channel fused signals. Image sharpening filter also significantly improved the recognition accuracy of canonical correlation analysis (CCA), filter bank canonical correlation analysis (FBCCA), and task-related component analysis (TRCA). The tools developed here effectively enhanced the SSVEP signal features, suggesting that image processing methods can be considered for improved brain signal analysis.

Abstract:The aim of the article is to provide a systematic presentation of basic tools that are most commonly used to analyze electroencephalography signals (EEG) in brain–computer interfaces for detection of steady-state visually evoked potentials (SSVEP). We use a database of EEG signals containing SSVEP and demonstrate the desirability of the use of selected methods, showing their benefits. Methods such as independent components analysis (ICA), frequency analysis (DFT), and time-frequency analysis (STFT) are presented. For SSVEP, the features of EEG signal should be stable with time. Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) allows to confirm this stability. Independent Component Analysis is used to extract pure SSVEP components. The advantages of each method are described and the obtained results are discussed. Further, source location by the use of low-resolution electromagnetic tomography algorithm is demonstrated.
Enhancing Performance of SSVEP-Based Visual Acuity via Spatial Filtering

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to enhance the performance of steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based visual acuity assessment with spatial filtering methods. Using the vertical sinusoidal gratings at six spatial frequency steps as the visual stimuli for 11 subjects, SSVEPs were recorded from six occipital electrodes (O1, Oz, O2, PO3, POz, and PO4). Ten commonly used training-free spatial filtering methods, i.e., native combination (single-electrode), bipolar combination, Laplacian combination, average combination, common average reference (CAR), minimum energy combination (MEC), maximum contrast combination (MCC), canonical correlation analysis (CCA), multivariate synchronization index (MSI), and partial least squares (PLS), were compared for multielectrode signals combination in SSVEP visual acuity assessment by statistical analyses, e.g., Bland-Altman analysis and repeated-measures ANOVA. The SSVEP signal characteristics corresponding to each spatial filtering method were compared, determining the chosen spatial filtering methods of CCA and MSI with a higher performance than the native combination for further signal processing. After the visual acuity threshold estimation criterion, the agreement between the subjective Freiburg Visual Acuity and Contrast Test (FrACT) and SSVEP visual acuity for the native combination (0.253 logMAR), CCA (0.202 logMAR), and MSI (0.208 logMAR) was all good, and the difference between FrACT and SSVEP visual acuity was also all acceptable for the native combination (-0.095 logMAR), CCA (0.039 logMAR), and MSI (-0.080 logMAR), where CCA-based SSVEP visual acuity had the best performance and the native combination had the worst. The study proved that the performance of SSVEP-based visual acuity can be enhanced by spatial filtering methods of CCA and MSI and also recommended CCA as the spatial filtering method for multielectrode signals combination in SSVEP visual acuity assessment.
Decoding SSVEP patterns from EEG via multivariate variational mode decomposition-informed canonical correlation analysis

Abstract:Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) is one of the most popular neural patterns used to develop brain-computer interface (BCI). To address the issue of electroencephalogram (EEG) is easily interfered with noise artifacts and differences in SSVEP components between different channels and different frequency bands. We propose multivariate variational mode decomposition-informed canonical correlation analysis (MVMD-CCA) to improve the decoding performance of SSVEP patterns. Firstly, the multivariate variational mode decomposition method is used to decompose electroencephalogram into inherent mode functions (IMFs) of different frequency bands for minimizing the effects of artifacts. Then, the obtained inherent mode functions components of various frequencies and channels are weighted to reconstruct the electroencephalogram signal. Furthermore, it has a fast convergence speed and good stability when using the sparrow search algorithm (SSA) to optimize the weight parameters. Finally, the weighted reconstructed signal is classified by the canonical correlation analysis (CCA). An extensive experimental analysis is implemented with electroencephalogram collected from nine subjects use an eight-target SSVEP system. Results show that the multivariate variational mode decomposition-informed canonical correlation analysis significantly outperforms the canonical correlation analysis, with a maximum increase of 14.2% in SSVEP decoding accuracy. Simultaneously, the information transfer rate (ITR) increased by 6.5. An extensive comparison was performed between the proposed method and other competing approaches, including multivariate synchronization index (MSI), temporally local multivariate synchronization index (TMSI), and filter bank canonical correlation analysis (FBCCA). The superiority of our method demonstrates its great promise in the development of improved BCI systems.

Abstract:Many spatial filtering methods have been proposed to enhance the target identification performance for the steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based brain–computer interface (BCI). The existing approaches tend to learn spatial filter parameters of a certain target using only the training data from the same stimulus, and they rarely consider the information from other stimuli or the volume conduction problem during the training process. In this article, we propose a novel multi-objective optimization-based high-pass spatial filtering method to improve the SSVEP detection accuracy and robustness. The filters are derived via maximizing the correlation between the training signal and the individual template from the same target whilst minimizing the correlation between the signal from other targets and the template. The optimization will also be subject to the constraint that the sum of filter elements is zero. The evaluation study on two self-collected SSVEP datasets (including 12 and four frequencies, respectively) shows that the proposed method outperformed the compared methods such as canonical correlation analysis (CCA), multiset CCA (MsetCCA), sum of squared correlations (SSCOR), and task-related component analysis (TRCA). The proposed method was also verified on a public 40-class SSVEP benchmark dataset recorded from 35 subjects. The experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed approach for enhancing the SSVEP detection performance.

Abstract:Objective. Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) is an important control method of the brain–computer interface (BCI) system. The development of an efficient SSVEP feature decoding algorithm is the core issue in SSVEP-BCI. It has been proposed to use user training data to reduce the spontaneous electroencephalogram activity interference on SSVEP response, thereby improving the feature recognition accuracy of the SSVEP signal. Nevertheless, the tedious data collection process increases the mental fatigue of the user and severely affects the applicability of the BCI system. Approach. A cross-subject spatial filter transfer (CSSFT) method that transfer the existing user model with good SSVEP response to the new user test data without collecting any training data from the new user is proposed. Main results. Experimental results demonstrate that the transfer model increases the distinction of the feature discriminant coefficient between the gaze following target and the non-gaze following target and accurately identifies the wrong target in the fundamental algorithm model. The public datasets show that the CSSFT method significantly increases the recognition performance of canonical correlation analysis (CCA) and filter bank CCA. Additionally, when the data used to calculate the transfer model contains one data block only, the CSSFT method retains its effective feature recognition capabilities. Significance. The proposed method requires no tedious data calibration process for new users, provides an effective technical solution for the transfer of the cross-subject model, and has potential application value for promoting the application of the BCI system.

Abstract:In steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), various spatial filtering methods based on individual calibration data have been proposed to alleviate the interference of spontaneous activities in SSVEP signals for enhancing the SSVEP detection performance. However, the necessary calibration procedures take time, cause visual fatigue and reduce usability. For the calibration-free scenario, we propose a cross-subject frequency identification method based on transfer superimposed theory for SSVEP frequency decoding. First, a multi-channel signal decomposition model was constructed. Next, we used the cross least squares iterative method to create individual specific transfer spatial filters as well as source subject transfer superposition templates in the source subject. Then, we identified common knowledge among source subjects using a prototype spatial filter to make common transfer spatial filters and common impulse responses. Following, we reconstructed a global transfer superimposition template with SSVEP frequency characteristics. Finally, an ensemble cross-subject transfer learning method was proposed for SSVEP frequency recognition by combining the sourcesubject transfer mode, the global transfer mode, and the sinecosine reference template. Offline tests on two public datasets show that the proposed method significantly outperforms the FBCCA, TTCCA, and CSSFT methods. More importantly, the proposed method can be directly used in online SSVEP recognition without calibration. The proposed algorithm was robust, which is important for a practical BCI.
A Frequency Recognition Method Based on Multitaper Spectral Analysis and SNR Estimation for SSVEP-based Brain-Computer Interface.

Abstract:Over the past several years, steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have attracted wide attention in the field of BCIs research due to high information transfer rate, little user training, and applicability to the majority. In conventional recognition methods for training-free SSVEP-based BCIs, the energy difference between the frequencies of electroencephalogram (EEG) background noise is usually ignored, therefore, there is a significant variance among the recognition accuracy of different stimulus frequencies. In order to improve the performance of training-free SSVEP-based BCIs system and balance the accuracy of recognition between different stimulus frequencies, a recognition method based on multitaper spectral analysis and signal-to-noise ratio estimation (MTSA-SNR) is proposed in this paper. A 40-class SSVEP public benchmark SSVEP dataset recorded from 35 subjects was used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Under the condition of 2.25s data length, the accuracy of the three methods were 81.1% (MTSA-SNR), 74.5% (canonical correlation analysis, CCA) and 73.4% (multivariate synchronization index, MSI), and the corresponding ITRs were 101 bits/min (MTSA-SNR), 89 bits/min (CCA), 87 bits/min (MSI). In the low frequency range (8-9.8Hz), the average recognition accuracy of the three methods is 82.9% (MTSA-SNR), 82.0% (CCA), 83.3% (MSI). The average accuracy of the three methods was 78.6% (MTSA-SNR), 64.9% (CCA) and 61.8% (MSI) in the high frequency range (14-15.8Hz). According to the results, the proposed method can effectively improve the performance of training-free SSVEP-based BCI system, and balance the recognition accuracy between different stimulation frequencies.
A Deep Learning Method for SSVEP Classification Based on Phase and Frequency Characteristics

Abstract:A deep learning method for Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP) classification is proposedto solve the problem that phase and frequency information are not fully used in existing deep learning models. First, the proposed model uses complex vectors of fast Fourier transform as input and operates convolution onreal and imaginary vectors to learn phase information, and then utilizes the spatial attention module to enhancediscriminative frequency information. Next, two-dimensional convolution and max pooling are used to extractfurther spatial and frequency features. Finally, fully connected layers are utilized to classify. The accuracy ofproposed model can reach 81.21% in the case of cross subject, and the accuracy can be further improved to83.17% by adding the standard sinusoidal signal templates to the training set. The results show that theproposed model achieves better performance than canonical correlation analysis algorithm.
Multi-scale noise transfer and feature frequency detection in SSVEP based on FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron system

Abstract:Objective. The steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) is one of the most commonly used control signals for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) due to its excellent interactive potential, such as high tolerance to noises and robust performance across users. In addition, it has a stable cycle, obvious characteristics and minimal training requirements. However, the SSVEP is extremely weak and companied with strong and multi-scale noise, resulting in a poor signal-to-noise ratio in practice. Common algorithms for classification are based on the principle of template matching and spatial filtering, which cannot obtain satisfied performance of SSVEP detection under the multi-scale noise. Therefore, using linear methods to extract SSVEP with obvious nonlinear and non-stationary characteristics, the useful signal will be attenuated or lost.Approach.To address this issue, two novel frameworks based on a two-dimensional nonlinear FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) neuron system are proposed to extract feature frequency of SSVEP.Results.In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methods, this research recruit 22 subjects to participate the experiment. Experimental results show that nonlinear FHN neuron model can force the energy of noise to be transferred into SSVEP and hence amplifying the amplitude of the target frequency. Compared with the traditional methods, the FHN and FHNCCA methods can achieve higher classification accuracy and faster processing speed, which effectively improves the information transmission rate of SSVEP-based BCI.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To determine the short-term clinical outcome of nano total hip replacement (NanoTHR) in dogs. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective case series. ANIMALS Dogs (n = 12). METHODS Medical records (2009-2011) of dogs that had nano-THR were reviewed for signalment, weight, clinical signs, side, age, prosthesis sizes, concurrent surgeries performed, complications, operative time, 3-month postoperative pelvic radiograph results, and lameness scores. RESULTS Breeds were Yorkshire Terriers (n = 6), Toy Poodles (2), with 1 each of Maltese, Pomeranian, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and Shih-Tzu. Median body was 4.87 kg (range, 2.5-5.90 kg) and median age, 35.75 months (range, 12-144 months). Radiographs were taken in 4 dogs at 12 days (n = 2), 14 days (1), and 30 days (1) after surgery because of presentation for an acute grade 5 lameness. Three dogs had femoral fractures distal to the femoral implant tip and 1 dog displaced the acetabular implant medially. After revision surgery, all femoral fractures were assessed as healed with intact plate fixation. The dog with the medially displaced acetabular component responded to conservative management including strict confinement and analgesic administration. Eight dogs (58%) were assigned a grade 1 lameness and 4 dogs were grade 2 (33%) at 12-week examination. The 3 dogs with grade 5 lameness scores found to have femoral fractures within 1 month after surgery, subsequently improved to grade 1 (n = 1) and 2 (2) 12 weeks after revision surgery. The dog with medial acetabular displacement improved to a grade 2 lameness 12 weeks after conservative management. CONCLUSIONS Although all 12 dogs had good-to-excellent outcomes, 33% experienced significant complications associated with the technique. As improvements in instrumentation and refinements in the technique are developed, NanoTHR can be considered an alternative to the femoral head and neck ostectomy (FHO) or medical management of coxofemoral disease for toy breed dogs. Further studies with a larger number of dogs and longer follow-up times are required.

Abstract:Objective.In the field of steady-state visual evoked potential brain computer interfaces (SSVEP-BCIs) research, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have gradually been proved to be an effective method. Whereas, majority works apply the frequency domain characteristics in long time window to train the network, thus lead to insufficient performance of those networks in short time window. Furthermore, only the frequency domain information for classification lacks of other task-related information. Approach.To address these issues, we propose a time-frequency domain generalized filter-bank convolutional neural network (FBCNN-G) to improve the SSVEP-BCIs classification performance. The network integrates multiple frequency information of electroencephalogram(EEG) with template and predefined prior of sinecosine signals to perform feature extraction, which contains correlation analyses in both template and signal aspects. Then the classification is performed at the end of the network. In addition, the method proposes the use of filter banks divided into specific frequency bands as pre-filters in the network to fully consider the fundamental and harmonic frequency characteristics of the signal. Main results.The proposed FBCNNG model is compared with other methods on the public dataset Benchmark. The results manifest that this model has higher accuracy of character recognition accuracy and information transfer rates in several time windows. Particularly, in the 0.2s time window, the mean accuracy of the proposed method reaches 62.02 ± 5.12%, indicating its superior performance. Significance.The proposed FBCNN-G model is critical for the exploitation of SSVEP-BCIs character recognition models.

Abstract:In steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) decoding algorithms, applying filter banks techniques and incorporating time-local information have been proven to significantly enhance SSVEP recognition performance. However, the challenge of setting time-local parameters for each subband within the filter banks has hindered the effective integration of these two techniques, thereby limiting improvements in SSVEP algorithm performance. To address this issue, we propose an SSVEP recognition framework that combines filter banks and time-local transformation (CFBTT). This framework is based on our hypothesis that increasing the energy distribution of SSVEP components within each subband can enhance algorithm performance. Therefore, we determine the time-local information parameters for each subband based on the differences in energy distribution before and after the time-local transformation and develop two parameter optimization methods designed for training-free and training algorithms, and , effectively integrating filter banks techniques with time-local transformation. Experimental results on two large-scale SSVEP datasets demonstrate that applying the CFBTT framework leads to significant improvements in recognition performance for both training-free and training algorithms. The enhanced performance of multiple state-of-the-art algorithms validates our hypothesis and demonstrates that our framework possesses strong generalization capabilities and broad applicability.

Abstract:A periodogram-based method is used to extract the stimulation frequency in a brain-computer interface (BCI) based on steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP), In the System, tens of buttons illuminated at different frequencies are used to generate deterministic sinusoidal responses or SSVEP at the visual cortex, which are derived from the electroencephalogram (EEC) by a suitable electrode array. Based on the periodogram of a time-series, we test the EEC data for the presence of hidden periodic components, which Correspond to SSVEP, and extract the stimulation frequencies. The method performs well in simulation, and is applied successfully to real data. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel SSVEP‐EEG signal enhancement algorithm using fractional‐order differentiation and the Laplace pyramid, enhancing signal clarity and feature distinctiveness. Tested with CCA, FBCCA, and TRCA on a public dataset, the algorithm significantly improves recognition accuracy, showcasing a notable advancement in SSVEP‐based BCI research. Steady‐state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP), significant in brain‐computer interfaces (BCI) and medical diagnostics, benefit from enhanced signal processing for improved analysis and interpretation. This study introduces a novel enhancement algorithm for SSVEP electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, employing fractional‐order differentiation operators combined with image processing techniques. Utilizing fractional‐order differentiation within a Laplace pyramid framework, the algorithm achieves hierarchical signal enhancement, facilitating detailed feature extraction and emphasizing SSVEP signal characteristics. This innovative approach merges the precision of fractional calculus with the structural benefits of the Laplace pyramid, leading to enhanced signal clarity and feature discrimination. The efficacy of this method was validated using canonical correlation analysis (CCA), filter bank CCA (FBCCA), and task‐related component analysis (TRCA) on a public dataset. Compared to conventional methods, our algorithm not only mitigates trend components in SSVEP signals but also significantly boosts the recognition accuracy of CCA, FBCCA, and TRCA algorithms. Experimental results indicate a marked improvement in recognition precision, underscoring the algorithm's potential to advance SSVEP‐based BCI research.

Abstract:High-frequency steady-state asymmetric visual evoked potential (SSaVEP) provides a new paradigm for designing comfortable and practical brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. However, due to the weak amplitude and strong noise of high-frequency signals, it is of great significance to study how to enhance their signal features. In this study, a 30 Hz high-frequency visual stimulus was used, and the peripheral visual field was equally divided into eight annular sectors. Eight kinds of annular sector pairs were selected based on the mapping relationship of visual space onto the primary visual cortex (V1), and three phases (in-phase[0º, 0º], anti-phase [0º, 180º], and anti-phase [180º, 0º]) were designed for each annular sector pair to explore response intensity and signal-to-noise ratio under phase modulation. A total of 8 healthy subjects were recruited in the experiment. The results showed that three annular sector pairs exhibited significant differences in SSaVEP features under phase modulation at 30 Hz high-frequency stimulation. And the spatial feature analysis showed that the two types of features of the annular sector pair in the lower visual field were significantly higher than those in the upper visual field. This study further used the filter bank and ensemble task-related component analysis to calculate the classification accuracy of annular sector pairs under three-phase modulations, and the average accuracy was up to 91.5%, which proved that the phase-modulated SSaVEP features could be used to encode high- frequency SSaVEP. In summary, the results of this study provide new ideas for enhancing the features of high-frequency SSaVEP signals and expanding the instruction set of the traditional steady state visual evoked potential paradigm.
Efficient Low-Frequency SSVEP Detection with Wearable EEG Using Normalized Canonical Correlation Analysis

Abstract:Recent studies show that the integrity of core perceptual and cognitive functions may be tested in a short time with Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) with low stimulation frequencies, between 1 and 10 Hz. Wearable EEG systems provide unique opportunities to test these brain functions on diverse populations in out-of-the-lab conditions. However, they also pose significant challenges as the number of EEG channels is typically limited, and the recording conditions might induce high noise levels, particularly for low frequencies. Here we tested the performance of Normalized Canonical Correlation Analysis (NCCA), a frequency-normalized version of CCA, to quantify SSVEP from wearable EEG data with stimulation frequencies ranging from 1 to 10 Hz. We validated NCCA on data collected with an 8-channel wearable wireless EEG system based on BioWolf, a compact, ultra-light, ultra-low-power recording platform. The results show that NCCA correctly and rapidly detects SSVEP at the stimulation frequency within a few cycles of stimulation, even at the lowest frequency (4 s recordings are sufficient for a stimulation frequency of 1 Hz), outperforming a state-of-the-art normalized power spectral measure. Importantly, no preliminary artifact correction or channel selection was required. Potential applications of these results to research and clinical studies are discussed.
