Abstract:The large combined field of view of the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) instruments onboard the GOES weather satellites makes them useful for studying the population of other atmospheric phenomena, such as bolides. Being a lightning mapper, GLM has many detection biases when applied to non-lightning and these systematics must be studied and properly accounted for before precise measurements of bolide flux can be ascertained. We developed a Bayesian Poisson regression model which simultaneously estimates instrumental biases and our statistic of principal interest: the latitudinal variation of bolide flux. We find that the estimated bias due to the angle of incident light upon the instrument corresponds roughly with the known sensitivity of the GLM instruments. We compare our latitudinal flux variation estimates to existing theoretical models and find our estimates consistent with GLM being strongly biased towards high-velocity bolides.

The Impact of Single Group Flashes on Geostationary Lightning Mapper Data

Abstract:Abstract The Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) is an instrument on the NOAA Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites‐R (GOES‐R) Series. The GLM data are processed by the Lightning Cluster Filter Algorithm which filters the GLM data and clusters it into a series of events, groups, and flashes. One of the current filters in the GLM algorithm (as of June 2023) removes all flashes that have only a single group. Combining the flashes (including the flashes with only single group) from two of the GLMs (the GLM on GOES‐16 and the GLM on GOES‐17) in the region where they overlap produces a unique data set of coincident flashes (detected by both GLMs) and non‐coincident flashes (detected by only one GLM). Coincident flashes detected by both GLMs are very unlikely to be from noise sources. This data set allows us to estimate the impact of the single group flashes on the Detection Efficiency (DE) and the False Alarm Rate (FAR). We find that the single group flash filter does greatly improve the FAR but does slightly decrease the DE. Subsequent analysis shows that some of the removed flashes with single groups are from true lightning. A simple modification to the single group flash filter to only remove flashes with a single event increases the FAR without a corresponding improvement in DE. A more complex algorithm is needed to recover the single group flashes that are likely from lightning without adding back single group flashes that are from noise sources.

Abstract:The Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) has been providing unprecedented observations of total lightning since becoming operational in 2017. The potential for GLM observations to be used for forecasting and analyzing tropical cyclone (TC) structure and intensity has been complicated by inconsistencies in the GLM data from a number of artifacts. The algorithm that processes raw GLM data has improved with time; however, the need for a consistent long-term dataset has motivated the development of quality control (QC) techniques to help remove clear artifacts such as blooming events, spurious false lightning, 'bar' effects, and sun glint. Simple QC methods are applied that include scaled maximum energy thresholds and minima in the variance of lightning group area and group energy. QC and anomaly detection methods based on machine learning (ML) are also explored. Each QC method is successfully able to remove artifacts in the GLM observations while maintaining the fidelity of the GLM observations within TCs. As the GLM processing algorithm has improved with time, the amount of QC flagged lightning within 100 km of Atlantic TCs is reduced, from 70% during 2017, to 10% in 2018, to 2% during 2021. These QC methods are relevant to the design of ML-based forecasting techniques which could pick up on artifacts rather than the signal of interest in TCs if QC wasn't applied beforehand.

Abstract:Challenges faced in the quantitative use of long-term radiation belt data sets include establishing their relative accuracy and correcting for on-orbit degradation. An existing empirical model of energetic plasmas (0.001–40 keV) in geosynchronous orbit has been extended in energy to several hundred keV by incorporating observations from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) 13 and 15 magnetospheric electron detector (MAGED) and magnetospheric proton detector (MAGPD). In order to ensure the accuracy of this energy range extension, the following steps were taken: (1) removing noise bursts; (2) intra-calibrating the nine solid state telescopes comprising each MAGED or MAGPD; (3) cross-calibrating GOES 13 and 15; and (4) cross-calibrating magnetospheric plasma analyzer (MPA) and GOES fluxes, the necessary final step in augmenting an MPA-based model with GOES data. The MAGED and MPA electron fluxes were demonstrated to agree well at the energy (40 keV) where they overlap, while the MAGPD proton fluxes exhibited a severe long-term degradation compared to MPA. This problem is related to the well-known long-term degradation of the proton fluxes from the similar medium energy proton and electron detector (MEPED) proton telescopes on the POES and Metop satellites in low-Earth orbit. Results of this on-orbit calibration work are used to reconsider long-standing hypotheses about the cause of degradation in similar proton telescopes.

Abstract:The CERES project utilizes geostationary-derived broadband measurements to infer the regional diurnal flux in between CERES instantaneous measurements to estimate the daily-averaged flux. The geostationary (GEO) imager radiances must be calibrated to the same reference to ensure spatial and temporal consistency of cloud properties and fluxes across the contiguous GEO domains. In order to place all of the GEO visible imagers on the same radiometric scale, the CERES project inter-calibrates the GEO imagers with Aqua-MODIS using multiple independent approaches. The primary inter-calibration approach relies on coincident, ray-matched GEO and MODIS radiance pairs over all-sky tropical ocean scenes (ATO). Another ray-matching approach was recently developed to take advantage of the visible spectral uniformity and near-Lambertian reflectance of deep convective clouds (DCC). The success of the DCC raymatching (DCC-RM) approach has been demonstrated by comparing the calibration with the ATO ray-matching (ATORM) approach for the 0.65-μm GEO and MODIS bands. Now that many of the recently launched GEO imagers have multiple reflective solar band channels, the DCCRM algorithm is being modified to inter-calibrate those channels as well, especially for the SWIR bands. The spectral uniformity of the DCC over the SWIR bands is not uniform, given that the ice particle absorption is a function of wavelength. New Spectral Band Adjustment Factor (SBAF) strategies will need to be developed. DCC-RM is also wellsuited to inter-calibrate historical near-broadband visible GEO imagers. DCC are spectrally flat across the visible spectrum, which reduces the SBAF uncertainty between two ray-matched sensors. Applying the DCC-RM technique on historical GEO imagers is challenging due to the coarser pixel and temporal resolution of the ISCCP B1U formatted dataset. The ATO-RM and DCC-RM calibration methods were applied to multiple visible bands on Himawari-8 using MODIS as the calibration reference. The Aqua-MODIS and Himawari-8 calibration difference was less than 0.4% for wavelengths less than 1 µm and for the Terra-MODIS 0.65-μm channel. Other channel combinations would need further examination to obtain consistent ATO and DCC gain results. The ATO-RM and DCC-RM calibration methods were also applied to GOES-8 in the ISCCP B1U format with NOAA-14 AVHRR as the calibration reference. The GOES-8 ATO and DCC calibration gain difference was within 0.15%. The agreement between ATO and DCC gains provides confidence in both methods.
Lunar impact flashes from Geminids, analysis of luminous efficiencies and the flux of large meteoroids on Earth

Abstract:We analyze lunar impact flashes recorded by our team during runs in December 2007, 2011, 2013 and 2014. In total, 12 impact flashes with magnitudes ranging between 7.1 and 9.3 in V band were identified. From these, 9 events could be linked to the Geminid stream. Using these observations the ratio of luminous energy emitted in the flashes with respect to the kinetic energy of the impactors for meteoroids of the Geminid stream is estimated. By making use of the known Geminids meteoroid flux on Earth we found this ratio to be 2.1x10$^{-3}$ on average. We compare this luminous efficiency with other estimations derived in the past for other meteoroid streams and also compare it with other estimations that we present here for the first time by making use of crater diameter measurements. We think that the luminous efficiency has to be revised downward, not upward, at least for sporadic impacts. This implies an increase in the influx of kilogram-sized and larger bodies on Earth that has been derived thus far through the lunar impact flash monitoring technique.

Abstract:Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) Radar Estimation via Machine Learning to Inform NWP (GREMLIN) is a machine learning model that outputs composite reflectivity using GOES-R Series Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) input data. GREMLIN is useful for observing severe weather and initializing convection for short-term forecasts, especially over regions without ground-based radars. This study expands the evaluation of GREMLIN's accuracy against the Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor (MRMS) System to the entire contiguous United States (CONUS) for the entire annual cycle. Regional and temporal variation of validation metrics are examined over CONUS by season, day-of-year, and time-of-day. Since GREMLIN was trained with data in spring and summer, root-mean square difference (RMSD) and bias are lowest in the order of summer, spring, fall, and winter. In summer, diurnal patterns of RMSD follow those of precipitation occurrence. Winter has the highest RMSD due to cold surfaces mistaken as precipitating clouds, but some of these errors can be removed by applying the ABI clear sky mask product and correcting biases using a lookup table. In GREMLIN, strong echoes are closely related to the existence of lightning and corresponding low brightness temperatures, which result in different error distributions over different regions of CONUS. This leads to negative biases in cold seasons over Washington state, lower 30 dBZ critical success index due to high misses over the Northeast, and higher false alarms over Florida due to higher frequency of lightning.

Benchmarking CME Arrival Time and Impact: Progress on Metadata, Metrics, and Events

Abstract:Accurate forecasting of the arrival time and subsequent geomagnetic impacts of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) at Earth is an important objective for space weather forecasting agencies. Recently, the CME Arrival and Impact working team has made significant progress towards defining community-agreed metrics and validation methods to assess the current state of CME modeling capabilities. This will allow the community to quantify our current capabilities and track progress in models over time. Firstly, it is crucial that the community focuses on the collection of the necessary metadata for transparency and reproducibility of results. Concerning CME arrival and impact we have identified 6 different metadata types: 3D CME measurement, model description, model input, CME (non-)arrival observation, model output data and metrics and validation methods. Secondly, the working team has also identified a validation time period, where all events within the following two periods will be considered: 1 January 2011-31 December 2012 and January 2015-31 December 2015. Those two periods amount to a total of about 100 hit events at Earth and a large amount of misses. Considering a time period will remove any bias in selecting events and the event set will represent a sample set that will not be biased by user selection. Lastly, we have defined the basic metrics and skill scores that the CME Arrival and Impact working team will focus on.

Microburst nowcasting applications of GOES

Abstract:Recent testing and validation have found that the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) microburst products are effective in the assessment and short-term forecasting of downburst potential and associated wind gust magnitude. Two products, the GOES sounder Microburst Windspeed Potential Index (MWPI) and a new bi-spectral GOES imager brightness temperature difference (BTD) product have demonstrated capability in downburst potential assessment. In addition, a comparison study between the GOES-R Convective Overshooting Top (OT) Detection and MWPI algorithms has been completed for cases that occurred during the 2007 to 2009 convective seasons over the southern Great Plains. Favorable results of the comparison study include a statistically significant negative correlation between the OT minimum temperature and MWPI values and associated measured downburst wind gust magnitude. The negative functional relationship between the OT parameters and wind gust speed highlights the importance of updraft strength, realized by large CAPE, in the generation of heavy precipitation and subsequent intense convective downdraft generation. This paper provides an updated assessment of the GOES MWPI and GOES BTD algorithms, presents case studies demonstrating effective operational use of the microburst products, and presents results of a cross comparison study of the GOES-R overshooting top (OT) detection algorithm over the United States Great Plains region.
Processes in negative and positive CG lightning flashes detected from space by GLM

Abstract:Negative and positive lightning flashes involve a number of different processes, including the preliminary breakdown, stepped and dart leaders, return strokes, continuing currents, M-components, etc. The Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) onboard of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES 16, 17 and 18) is an optical lightning detector with a time resolution of 2 ms and spatial resolution of about 8 km at nadir. The GLM provides three types of data: events, groups, and flashes. According to GLM designers, the group data are intended to track individual lightning strokes. We recorded wideband lightning electric fields using fast and slow antennas in the Amazon and compared them with the corresponding GLM group data (optical energy in Joules) to investigate what lightning processes can be detected from space by GLM. Based on a sample of 15 -CG flashes containing 56 strokes and 15 +CG flashes containing 24 strokes, we found that GLM detected some luminosity in 89 % of 2 ms time windows corresponding to -CG return strokes and 96 % of windows corresponding to +CG return strokes. It also detected luminosity in 100 % of time windows corresponding to preliminary breakdown processes in positive flashes versus 53 % in negative flashes. Further, the GLM detected luminosity emissions associated with 80 % and 40 % of first-stroke leaders in positive and negative flashes, respectively. In general, GLM is more efficient in detecting processes in positive lightning flashes than in negative ones.

Abstract:The 16-band GOES-R Series Advanced Baseline Imager scans sizable areas of deep space, and these regions regularly contain serendipitous observations of bright celestial objects, namely, the Moon, bright planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter), and several bright stars. The Moon has already been established as a radiometric calibrator for Earth-observing instruments, but little work has been done in utilizing other targets. In this presentation, we find that Mercury, and possibly Venus, may have potential as calibration targets. Future instruments with greater sensitivity will yield also more (and more accurate) observations of celestial targets in their space scans.

Improvement of the Use of Msg and Goes Data in the Ncep Gdas

Abstract:Infrared (IR) observations from Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) on board Meteosat Second Generation (MSG)-2 satellite are assimilated into NCEP global data assimilation system (GDAS). The assimilation of current Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Imager data was also reinvestigated. The Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM) was used as observation operator for the assimilation of SEVIRI radiance observations. The CRTM was enhanced with several critical components for IR radiance assimilation, such as a dynamically-updated land surface emissivity data, as well as fast and accurate gaseous absorption modules. The Global Space-Based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS) calibration corrections were applied to improve the simulation of SEVIRI and GOES Imager radiances. Preliminary results show that inclusions of the SEVIRI radiances at water vapor channels (6.25 and 7.35 micron) and CO2 channel (13.4 micron) in Global Forecast System (GFS) produced significant positive impacts on the six-day forecasts. Assimilation of other five SEVIRI IR window channels in GFS reduces the positive impact. By applying GSICS calibration algorithm to correct SEVIRI and GOES-12 Imager observations biases, the impacts on GFS forecast were improved. Further studies are being carried out to improve the effective assimilation of SEVIRI IR window channels radiances.

Abstract:DMSP-OLS Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Operational Linescan System night-time light data can accurately reflect the scope and intensity of human activities. However, the raw data cannot be used directly for temporal analyses due to the lack of inflight calibration. There are three problems that should be addressed in intercalibration. First, because of differences between sensors, the data are not identical even when obtained in the same year. Second, different acquisition times may lead to random or systematic fluctuations in the data obtained by satellites in different orbits. Third, a pixel saturation phenomenon also exists in the urban centres of the image. Therefore, an invariant region method was used in this article, and the relative radiometric calibration and saturation correction achieved the desired results. In the meantime, intercalibration models for each satellite year of DMSP-OLS night-time light data were produced. Finally, intercalibration accuracy was evaluated, and the intercalibration results were tested with the corresponding gross domestic product GDP data.

Abstract:Methods to map artificial night sky brightness and stellar visibility across large territories or their distribution over the entire sky at any site are based on the computation of the propagation of light pollution with Garstang models, a simplified solution of the radiative transfer problem in the atmosphere which allows a fast computation by reducing it to a ray-tracing approach. We present here up-to-date Extended Garstang Models (EGM) which provide a more general numerical solution for the radiative transfer problem applied to the propagation of light pollution in the atmosphere. We also present the LPTRAN software package, an application of EGM to high-resolution DMSP-OLS satellite measurements of artificial light emissions and to GTOPO30 digital elevation data, which provides an up-to-date method to predict the artificial brightness distribution of the night sky at any site in the World at any visible wavelength for a broad range of atmospheric situations and the artificial radiation density in the atmosphere across the territory. EGM account for (i) multiple scattering, (ii) wavelength from 250 nm to infrared, (iii) Earth curvature and its screening effects, (iv) sites and sources elevation, (v) many kinds of atmosphere with the possibility of custom setup (e.g. including thermal inversion layers), (vi) mix of different boundary layer aerosols and tropospheric aerosols, with the possibility of custom setup, (vii) up to 5 aerosol layers in upper atmosphere including fresh and aged volcanic dust and meteoric dust, (viii) variations of the scattering phase function with elevation, (ix) continuum and line gas absorption from many species, ozone included, (x) up to 5 cloud layers, (xi) wavelength dependant bidirectional reflectance of the ground surface from NASA/MODIS satellites, main models or custom data (snow included), (xii) geographically variable upward light emission function.

Abstract:The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) develops JPL-GIM, a software for generating global ionospheric maps (GIMs) of total electron content (TEC) using measurements from multiple Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) constellations. Within this overview paper, we delve into the current state and the most recent enhancements of JPL-GIM. An adaptable Kalman filter provides maps with user-defined temporal and spatial resolutions, while concurrently delivering essential covariance data for uncertainty assessment. Furthermore, multiple shell models offer a versatile framework to balance accuracy and computational efficiency. We present the five operational JPL GIM products (JPLG, JPRG, JPLI, JPLD, JPRT), highlighting JPLG and JPRG, our products routinely delivered to the International GNSS Service (IGS), and introduce a new near-real-time product (JPRT). As an added demonstration of JPL-GIM's capabilities, we present a very-high-resolution (2-minute, multi-GNSS, 1000-station) configuration to showcase JPL-GIM's ability to resolve long-lasting effects of the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption. Validations using independent datasets confirm the accurate reproduction of ionospheric variations across all latitudinal bands.

Can we predict the impact conditions of metre-sized meteoroids?

Abstract:Every year, a few metre-sized meteoroids impact the atmosphere of the Earth. Most (if not all) of them are undetectable before the impact. Therefore, predicting where and how they will fall seems to be an impossible task. In this letter we show compelling evidence that we can constrain in advance, the dynamical and geometrical conditions of an impact. For this purpose, we analyse the well-documented case of the Chelyabinsk (Russia) impact and the more recent and smaller Viñales (Cuba) event, whose conditions we estimate and provide here. After using the {\em Gravitational Ray Tracing} algorithm (GRT) to "predict" the impact conditions of the aforementioned events, we find that the speed, incoming direction and (marginally) the orbital elements of the corresponding meteoroids could be constrained in advance, starting only on one hand, with the geographical location and time of the impact, and on the other hand, with the distribution in configuration space of Near Earth Objects (NEOs). Any improvement in our capability to predict or at least to constrain impact properties of medium-sized and large meteoroids, will help us to be better prepared for its potentially damaging effects.

Abstract:A methodology for evaluating the science benefit of adding space weather sensor data from a modest number of small satellites to the Utah State University Global Assimilation of Ionospheric Measurements—Full Physics (GAIM‐FP) model is presented. Three orbital scenarios are presented, two focusing on improved coverage of narrowly specified regions of interest, and one on global coverage of the ionosphere as a whole. An Observing System Simulation Experiment is used to obtain qualitative and quantitative results of the impact of the various orbital scenarios on the ionospheric specifications. A simulated “truth” run of the ionosphere is obtained from a first principle model of the ionosphere/plasmasphere model and used to generate global simulated Global Positioning Satellite total electron content (GPS‐TEC) data as well as in situ plasma density observations. Initially, only GPS data were assimilated by GAIM‐FP, and the results of this limited run were compared to the truth run. Next, the simulated in situ plasma densities corresponding to our three orbital scenarios were assimilated together with the GPS data, and the results were compared to both the truth run and the limited GPS‐TEC only GAIM‐FP run. These model simulations have shown that adding a constellation of small satellites/sensors in addition to global TEC inputs does indeed converge the GAIM‐FP model closer to truth in the situations described.

Abstract:Calibration of NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft instruments allows reliable scientific interpretation of the images and spectra returned from comet Tempel 1. Calibrations of the four onboard remote sensing imaging instruments have been performed in the areas of geometric calibration, spatial resolution, spectral resolution, and radiometric response. Error sources such as noise (random, coherent, encoding, data compression), detector readout artifacts, scattered light, and radiation interactions have been quantified. The point spread functions (PSFs) of the medium resolution instrument and its twin impactor targeting sensor are near the theoretical minimum [ approximately 1.7 pixels full width at half maximum (FWHM)]. However, the high resolution instrument camera was found to be out of focus with a PSF FWHM of approximately 9 pixels. The charge coupled device (CCD) read noise is approximately 1 DN. Electrical cross-talk between the CCD detector quadrants is correctable to <2 DN. The IR spectrometer response nonlinearity is correctable to approximately 1%. Spectrometer read noise is approximately 2 DN. The variation in zero-exposure signal level with time and spectrometer temperature is not fully characterized; currently corrections are good to approximately 10 DN at best. Wavelength mapping onto the detector is known within 1 pixel; spectral lines have a FWHM of approximately 2 pixels. About 1% of the IR detector pixels behave badly and remain uncalibrated. The spectrometer exhibits a faint ghost image from reflection off a beamsplitter. Instrument absolute radiometric calibration accuracies were determined generally to <10% using star imaging. Flat-field calibration reduces pixel-to-pixel response differences to approximately 0.5% for the cameras and <2% for the spectrometer. A standard calibration image processing pipeline is used to produce archival image files for analysis by researchers.
Oxygen line in fireball spectra and its application to satellite observations

Abstract:Aims. Lightning mapper sensors on board weather satellites can be successfully used to observe fireballs. These sensors use a very narrow spectral band at 777 nm, which is only a small fraction of the total fireball radiation. In this spectral band, the oxygen O I-1 triplet is dominant for fast meteors and the Planck continuum can prevail in slow meteors. It is possible to estimate the meteor brightness in the visible spectral range from this narrowband radiation, but it is vital to first study the dependence of this radiation on the meteor velocity. Methods. We used observations from the well-established European Fireball Network with newly developed digital spectral cameras that allowed us to study the oxygen triplet in meteor spectra and its relation to the meteor velocity and altitude. In addition, we studied strong magnesium and sodium lines. Results. We developed a method for calibration of fireball observation reported by Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) sensors on board the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) weather satellites. We confirm that in slow meteors, the radiation of the Planck continuum dominates, but for faster meteors, a correction on velocity is needed. We observe that the altitude where the oxygen line was recorded can also affect the radiation at 777 nm. In addition, determining whether or not the meteor showed a bright flare could also lead to a similar effect. Thus, the meteor brightness estimate may be impacted by these characteristics. We derived simple corrections on the altitude and on the meteor brightness that helped to improve the overall precision of the magnitude estimate of our sample. This allowed us to estimate the magnitude of meteors observed by GLM with an accuracy of ≈1 in magnitude. The Na/Mg line intensity ratio was found to be constant for velocities above 25 km s −1 and increasing toward lower velocities.

Abstract:Identical Lightning Imaging Sensors aboard the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite (TRMM LIS, 1998–2015) and International Space Station (ISS LIS, 2017–present) have provided over two decades of lightning observations over the global tropics, with ISS LIS extending coverage into the mid-latitudes. Quantifying the detection performance of both LIS sensors is a necessary step toward generating a combined LIS climatological record and accurately combining LIS data with lightning detections from other sensors and networks. We compare lightning observations from both LIS sensors with reference sources including the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) and ground-based Earth Networks Total Lightning Network (ENTLN), Earth Networks Global Lightning Network (ENGLN), National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN), and Global Lightning Dataset (GLD360). Instead of a relative detection efficiency (DE) approach that assumes perfect performance of the reference sensor, we employ a Bayesian approach to estimate the upper limit of the absolute DE (ADE) of each system being analyzed. The results of this analysis illustrate the geographical pattern of ADE as well as its diurnal cycle and yearly evolution. Reference network ADE increased by ~15–30% during the TRMM era, leading to a decline in TRMM LIS ADE. ISS LIS flash ADE has been relatively consistent at 61–65%, about 4–5% lower than TRMM LIS at the end of its lifetime.
