Abstract:China’s oil fields have entered the stage of tertiary oil recovery. The development of oil displacement agents adapted to high temperature and high salt production environment has attracted extensive attention. In this paper, polyacrylamide, a traditional oil displacement agent, was modified, and acrylamide/2-acrylamyl-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid/sodium p-styrene sulfonate（AM/AMPS/SSS） terpolymer was prepared and optimized using aqueous solution polymerization. The effects of various reaction conditions on the apparent viscosity of the product aqueous solution were explored, and the optimum preparation conditions of terpolymer were obtained. The apparent viscosity, heat and salt resistance of terpolymer solution were studied by using rotary viscosimeter. Finally,AM/AMPS/SSS terpolymer with obvious heat and salt resistance and good thermal stability was obtained, which has a good application prospect in the current severe crude oil exploitation environment.
Production and physicochemical characterization of bacterial poly gamma- (glutamic acid) to investigate its performance on enhanced oil recovery

Abstract:Bacillus licheniformis LMG 7559, which is capable of producing extracellular poly gamma- (glutamic acid) (PGA), was provided for the biopolymer synthesis. Using a modified PGA medium for PGA production, the isolated biopolymer, undergone dialysis process mainly for desalination and removal of other impurities. The bacteria produced high molecular weight biopolymers with a weight average molecular weight (M̅n) of 1.6 × 105 g/mole identified by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Furthermore, GPC analysis was utilized to determine the poly-dispersity of PGA as well as molecular weight variation by cultivation time. The heavy weight fraction of 1.85 × 105 g/mole with poly-dispersity index of 7.42 was distinguished. For the extracted and dialyzed biopolymer, thermal properties were studied using DSC/TGA by which a mass loss of 36 percent was observed. Eventually, the biopolymer solution was injected into the oil saturated heterogeneous porous medium to evaluate the recovery factor enhancement by PGA flooding. It was found that 31.45% of oil in place was recovered by biopolymer flooding, whereas only 16.6% of oil in place was obtained by water flooding.
Experimental Study on the Application of Cellulosic Biopolymer for Enhanced Oil Recovery in Carbonate Cores under Harsh Conditions

Abstract:Polymer flooding is used to improve the viscosity of an injectant, thereby decreasing the mobility ratio and improving oil displacement efficiency in the reservoir. Thanks to their environmentally benign nature, natural polymers are receiving prodigious attention for enhanced oil recovery. Herein, the rheology and oil displacement properties of okra mucilage were investigated for its enhanced oil recovery potential at a high temperature and high pressure (HTHP) in carbonate cores. The cellulosic polysaccharide used in the study is composed of okra mucilage extracted from okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) via a hot water extraction process. The morphological property of okra mucilage was characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), while the thermal stability was investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The rheological property of the okra mucilage was investigated for seawater salinity and high-temperature conditions using a TA rheometer. Finally, an oil displacement experiment of the okra mucilage was conducted in a high-temperature, high-pressure core flooding equipment. The TGA analysis of the biopolymer reveals that the polymeric solution was stable over a wide range of temperatures. The FTIR results depict that the mucilage is composed of galactose and rhamnose constituents, which are essentially found in polysaccharides. The polymer exhibited pseudoplastic behavior at varying shear rates. The viscosity of okra mucilage was slightly reduced when aged in seawater salinity and at a high temperature. Nonetheless, the cellulosic polysaccharide exemplified sufficiently good viscosity under high-temperature and high-salinity (HTHS) conditions. Finally, the oil recovery results from the carbonate core plug reveal that the okra mucilage recorded a 12.7% incremental oil recovery over waterflooding. Abstract:In search of robust polymers for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) application in reservoirs with harsh conditions, a water-soluble biopolymer was thoroughly investigated in this work to evaluate its applicability in such reservoirs. The experimental data revealed that compared to the commonly used EOR polymer, HPAM, the biopolymer was more efficient in thickening a brine solution as a result of its peculiar conformation. The presence of an electrolyte has almost no effect on the rheology of the biopolymer solution, even at an extremely high salt concentration (20 wt% NaCl). The relation between viscosity and the concentration curve was well fitted to the power-law model. Moreover, the rigid polymer chains rendered the polymer solution superior tolerance to elevated temperatures and salinity, but also led to considerable retention within tight porous media. The adsorption behavior was characterized by the average thickness of the hydrodynamic adsorbed layer on sand grains. The mechanical degradation was assessed by forcing the polymer solutions to flow through an abrupt geometry at ultra-high shear rates. The slight viscosity loss compared to HPAM proved the high mechanical stability of this polymer. These properties made it a promising alternative to HPAM in polymer flooding in the near future for high permeability oil reservoirs with harsh conditions.

Bioplastic Production by Bacillus wiedmannii AS-02 OK576278 Using Different Agricultural Wastes

Abstract:Polyhydroxybutyrates (PHBs) are macromolecules synthesized by bacteria. Because of their fast degradability under natural environmental conditions, PHBs were selected as alternatives for the production of biodegradable plastics. Sixteen PHB-accumulating strains were selected and compared for their ability to accumulate PHB granules inside their cells. Isolate AS-02 was isolated from cattle manure and identified as Bacillus wiedmannii AS-02 OK576278 by means of 16S rRNA analysis. It was found to be the best producer. The optimum pH, temperature, and incubation period for the best PHB production by the isolate were 7, 35 °C, and 72 h respectively. PHB production was the best with peptone and glucose as nitrogen and carbon sources at a C/N ratio of (2:1). The strain was able to accumulate 423, 390, 249, 158, and 144 mg/L PHB when pretreated orange, mango, banana, onion peels, and rice straw were used as carbon sources, respectively. The extracted polymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and GC-MS spectroscopy, which confirmed the structure of the polymer as PHB. The isolate B. wiedmannii AS-02 OK576278 can be considered an excellent candidate for industrial production of PHB from agricultural wastes.

Abstract:Biopolymers are gaining increased attention in the industry due to their unique characteristics, including being cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable. It is also worth noting that natural polymers can be obtained in significant quantities from various renewable sources, whereas synthetic polymers are derived from non-renewable petroleum resources. Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) using biopolymers such as galactomannan, xanthan, welan gum, acacia gum, carboxy methyl cellulose, and corn starch is a developing trend and is projected to replace synthetic polymers (hydrophobically associated polyacrylamides) in the nearby future. The choice of polymers to be utilized in EOR technologies should be based on their cost and availability in addition to their functional properties. Biopolymers in enhanced oil recovery serve to enhance the mobility ratio by increasing the viscosity of displacing fluid and reducing permeability. Even though biopolymers have a tough structure and long polysaccharide chains that make them suitable for enduring severe reservoir conditions, they are highly susceptible to bacterial destruction. In this comprehensive review, we have illustrated the different techniques used to enhance the performance of biopolymers (xanthan gum, guar gum, and starch) in enhanced oil recovery and create new composites that can overcome the challenges faced by these biopolymers under reservoir conditions. We have found that the most famous and favorable techniques used in this approach are, grafting copolymerization, nanocomposites functionalization, amphiphilic style, and hydrogel formation. The review also discussed some other biopolymers (carboxy methyl cellulose, welan gum, and acacia gum) that can be utilized to improve oil recovery and evaluated how widely they have been applied in this field. In this review, we have addressed several important issues (knowledge gaps) that have not been covered in recent studies. We have also provided recommendations and prospects for the successful future implementation of these composites in the EOR field. In conclusion, we hope that this review will help in better understanding the use of these modified biopolymers for enhanced oil recovery (EOR).

Abstract:Crude oil plays an important role in the energy supplement and is being considered as one of the most important and strategic resources of energy in the world and it acts as the main source of energy in most of the industries. With the increasing demands for crude oil, the need for more efficient production methods has risen day to day. Synthetic polymers have a wide range of applications in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) Methods as a thickening agent, but their functionality is prone to fail in a harsh environment such as high temperature, high salinity, or shear stress. Biopolymers with firm structure, high resistance, and high thickening effect are completely eco-friendly and capable of being considered one of the best alternatives for synthetic polymers. These high molecular weight macromolecules with stable structure are able to maintain their functionality in the high range of temperatures (up to 100°C) and can improve the oil recovery rate up to 80%. Rheological behaviors of three types of biopolymers with microbial sources were studied through this paper and their strain, structure, and effect on the oil recovery rates were put under the spotlight. Abstract:Improving oil production for high-salinity reservoirs using polymer flooding is challenging due to chemical and mechanical degradations. This study developed two biodegradable biopolymers based on graft copolymerization of guar gum (GG) with two different co-monomers, which are acrylamide (Am) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), and cross-linked by N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) to face these challenges. The newly synthesized guar gum-based hydrogels, GG-g-poly(Am-AMPS) (GH) and GG-g-poly(Am-AMPS)/Biochar (GBH composite), were evaluated as potential candidates for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) under high-salinity conditions. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of the synthesized hydrogels were investigated, and their rheological properties were measured at room temperature. Both GH and GHB display a shear-thinning performance. In polymer flooding experiments, guar gum hydrogel (GH) and guar gum/biochar composite hydrogel (GHB) showed a remarkable influence on delaying the water breakthrough and proved to be effective biopolymers for enhanced oil recovery in high-salinity reservoirs. At the optimum concentration of 5 g/L, GH flooding achieved maximum oil recoveries of 70.53 and 72.11% in secondary and tertiary recovery processes, respectively. Meanwhile, the waterflooding process achieved an ultimate oil recovery of 58.42%. GHB flooding at optimum concentration, 2 g/L, increased the amount of oil recovery by 8.95% in tertiary recovery compared to waterflooding. Furthermore, GH (5 g/L) and GHB (2 g/L) slightly enhanced the rock water wettability as confirmed by contact angle measurements for GH and the relative permeability saturation curves for GH and GHB.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Herein, the image shows how to evaluate the polymer application in enhanced oil recovery. These stages involve polymer production through bacterial activity in the source of sucrose, determination of viscosity, and flow behavior at different concentrations, temperatures, and salinities, contact angle tests to describe the rock wettability alteration, compatibility tests with salinity, and a core flooding test. In this research, it was attempted to describe in vitro the efficiency of a natural polymer synthesized from sugarcane waste by bacteria for application in enhanced crude oil recovery. Necessary experiments were carried out with the main targets of extraction and description of the polymer and its effectiveness in enhanced oil recovery. It is shown that in the polymer concentrations of 1, 2, 5, and 8 wt%, the viscosity is equal to 26.08, 76.51, 100.94, and 168.36 mPa s. A shear‐thinning flow behavior is observed at initial shear rates. The sandstone wettability alteration is observed through the contact angles at concentrations of 1, 2, 5, and 8 wt% that are 85.93°, 72.19°, 76.51°, and 71.09°, respectively. Based on salinity compatibility, the polymer work up to a salinity of 90 000 ppm and based on viscosity tests, up to a salinity of 120 000 ppm. Regarding the performance of the polymer solution against temperature, it shows an acceptable performance in increasing the viscosity at the highest temperature of 75 °C. The water cut reaches its minimum of 8%, and then increases. By injecting 3.3 Pore volum (PV), the oil recovery reaches 81.4%. In a polymeric slug injection program, the oil recovery factor reaches 74.8%.Similarly, the water cut starts to decrease after the injection of polymer, and finally, after the injection of 0.9 PV including 0.5 PV of the polymer solution and 0.4 PV of water, reaches its minimum during the experiment, i.e., 22%.

Synthesis and viscometric behavior of a novel associative polymer for enhanced oil recovery

Abstract:P flooding is a highly beneficial EOR technique to improve oil displacement. A large number of polymers have been developed to overcome some limitations of conventional polymers to enhance oil recovery. Hydrophobically modified water soluble polymers are a type that has been introduced to oil field application for the past two decades. The main characteristics of these polymers are their significant enhancement of water viscosity compared with the conventional polymers such as hydrolyzed poly acrylamide (HPAM) and their salinity tolerance that would be more important in the real application. In this study, Hydrophobically associative polymer poly-phenylacrylamide (PPAM) were prepared by an aqueous micellar copolymerization technique from acrylamide and a small amount of n-phenylacrylamide as hydrophobe monomer. The properties of poly-phenylacrylamide were investigated in aqueous solution under various conditions. The results showed that the solution properties were strongly affected by the microstructure of copolymer. The copolymers with hydrophobic microblocky structure exhibited large viscosity enhancement due to the inter-molecular hydrophobic association. The hydrophobic association thickening behaviors were also dependent on the number and length of the hydrophobic block in polymer chain. Non-linear viscosity relationship was found as increasing hydrophobe content, and a maximum appeared as a result of the competitive effect between interand intra-molecular hydrophobic associations. A rapid viscosity enhancement was observed upon the addition of SDS below its critical micelle concentration. Solution properties were further studied as a function of the polymer concentration, salinity, shear rate and temperature.

Abstract:Polysaccharide biopolymers are biomacromolecules derived from renewable resources with versatile functions including thickening, crosslinking, adsorption, etc. Possessing high efficiency and low cost, they have brought wide applications in all phases of petroleum recovery, from well drilling to wastewater treatment. The biopolymers are generally utilized as additives of fluids or plugging agents, to correct the fluid properties that affect the performance and cost of petroleum recovery. This review focuses on both the characteristics of biopolymers and their utilization in the petroleum recovery process. Research on the synthesis and characterization of polymers, as well as controlling their structures through modification, aims to develop novel recipes of biopolymer treatment with new application realms. The influences of biopolymer in many petroleum recovery cases were also evaluated to permit establishing the correlations between their physicochemical properties and performances. As their performance is heavily affected by the local environment, screening and testing polymers under controlled conditions is the necessary step to guarantee the efficiency and safety of biopolymer treatments.
Extraction, characterization, and evaluation of galactomannan from Barbatimão Verdadeiro as a potential additive for enhanced oil recovery fluids

Abstract:Polymers play a crucial role in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) by increasing the viscosity of injection fluids and enhancing oil displacement. The widely used polymer, partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM), faces performance degradation in high-salinity and high-temperature environments. This study explores galactomannan from Stryphnodendron polyphyllum seeds as an alternative viscosifying agent for EOR fluids. An extraction process for galactomannan from Barbatimão Verdadeiro seeds was developed, yielding 23.3% m/m. The biopolymer was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). Rheological behavior was tested in brines of different salinities, and injectivity/filterability tests were performed following API RP 63:1990 standards. The galactomannan obtained from Stryphnodendron polyphyllum exhibited a mannose-to-galactose ratio of 1.32. Rheological analysis showed pseudoplastic behavior, with viscosities of 38 cP in brine solutions at 7.37 s −1 and 60 °C. Filterability tests demonstrated satisfactory injectivity with factors of 1.09 (8 μm) and 0.67 (1.2 μm). Compared to HPAM, galactomannan exhibited superior viscosity retention in high-salinity conditions, where HPAM dropped to 6 cP. The galactomannan extracted from Stryphnodendron polyphyllum seeds is a promising biopolymer for EOR applications, offering superior performance under harsh conditions compared to traditional HPAM. Its resilience to high salinity and temperature makes it a viable alternative for pre-salt and offshore fields, contributing to more sustainable and efficient oil recovery.

Abstract:This research explores the utilization of a hydrocolloid sourced from Plantago ovata seeds as a natural polymer for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) process. The rheology of solutions and the effects of time and temperature on the efficiency were determined. P. ovata mucilage (POM) was used in combination with alkali/sulfate-treated smart water. POM retention and salt tolerance were also estimated. Based on the obtained results, the colloid of 1000 ppm of POM has a viscosity equal to 95.03 mPa·s, which is considered for EOR in combination with smart water. POM does not undergo damage and molecular destruction at reservoir temperature. The POM solutions have non-Newtonian behavior. The use of POM up to a salinity of 60,000 ppm is considered permissible in terms of compatibility. Dilution of seawater decreases interfacial tension and contact angle by 55.9 and 51.4% and to final values of 12.36 mN/m and 81.16°, respectively. When MgSO4 is added, these values reach 73.6 and 61.1% equivalent to the final results of 7.39 mN/m and 65.41°, respectively. The reduction of these two parameters in the presence of an alkaline agent reaches 88.6 and 61.0% with the final values of 3.19 mN/m and 65.48° and finally reaches 97.3 and 71.4% based on the optimum points of 0.73 mN/m and 48.05° with the addition of POM. Injection of only 0.5 PV of polymeric fluid at a concentration of 1000 ppm of POM increases the EOR more than twice compared to smart water injection.

Abstract:Due to increasingly stringent global environmental regulations, the petroleum industry must find practical, affordable, and environmentally compliant biopolymers. This study is focused on developing such a biopolymer from orange peels, which exhibits viscous properties and stability in high-salinity and high-temperature (HSHT) reservoirs. The extraction process involved drying, crushing, and grinding orange peels into particulate sizes. These preprocessed peels were then heated in a mixture of water and hydrochloric acid (HCl) before vacuum extracting the yield solution—biopolymer. Parameters that could influence the yield viscosity of the biopolymer, like extraction solvent salinity, HCl concentration, orange peel concentration, peel part—whole or albedo, peel size, and heating, were studied. The highest yield viscosity obtained was 75 cp at a shear rate of 5 s −1 and temperature of 25 °C; this decreased to 20 cp at 90 °C at the same shear rate. The viscosity was 47 cp at 65 s −1 at 25 °C, which decreased to 10 cp at the same shear rate, demonstrating a shear thinning behavior. These results were obtained for powdered whole orange peels with 8% concentration, water salinity of 37,000 ppm, and 5 ml/L of HCl. An environmentally friendly and sustainable enhanced oil recovery (EOR) biopolymer has been successfully extracted from citrus wastes with a viscosity suitable for EOR applications in HSHT reservoirs.

Abstract:Abstract Chemical enhanced oil recovery (CEOR) plays a major role in sustaining production, extending the life of field and improves the recoverable reserves which is of economic benefit. The injected polymer will eventually propagate to the production wells where it is co-produced with production fluids. The presence of polymer in the back produced water may increase the residual oil levels and suspended solids in the produced water. This causes production systems bottlenecks, have a detrimental effect on water treatment processes, and increase in Oil in Water levels higher than admissible specs for discharge or reinjection. Several CEOR projects are introduced to producing fields where an established water treatment process already exists. These processes are initially designed to perform under a set of fluid and operating conditions. Polymer breakthrough can change the back produced water characteristics and impact the performance of the process. Upgrading of processes may require substantial investment. Chemical additives are widely considered as pragmatic alternative to improve water quality to desired levels. The selection of chemicals is very important as there are other associated challenges to be considered e.g. of the use of inorganic coagulants such as polyaluminum chloride (PAC) has been shown in studies to generate significant amounts of viscous sludge with low dry solids creating, sludge handing and equipment issues in the field. In this study, a new product combination has been developed to solve some of the drawbacks of traditional chemical such as sludge production while maintaining the performance of treatment. The composition of the product was determined through series of lab experiments and using design of experiments (DOE) methodology. The experiments were initially performed using a synthetic mixture of 400 parts per million (ppm) of hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM with hydrolysis degree ~ 30%) in saline water. The results were benchmarked to PAC and shown to produce a lower amount of sludge (25-50%) with the same performance in the same range of dosage (300-400 ppm). The sludge generated from the new combined product was also less viscous compared to the benchmark product. The investigation also revealed that a composition containing both inorganic/organic coagulant and cationic polymer improved performance. Results were validated with a field sample containing approx. 300 ppm of HPAM polymer. It was found that to generate less sludge and remove maximum total suspended solids, complete removal of polymer is not required. This new product offers several benefits including a reduction in the operating costs (product dosage is about half of benchmark product, polyaluminum chloride), reduction in the chemical footprint, improves the operational efficiency of the water treatment process and allows to operate within their environmental specifications.

Abstract:ABSTRACT. Currently, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technology is being interested in the Indonesian state as an advanced technology that can recover oil remaining in the reservoir. The discovery of new resources and EOR efforts are predicted to result in increased oil production. This paper provides a review of main types of EOR methods, which are gas injection, thermal injection, and chemical injection; mechanism of polymer flooding; and biopolymer materials for EOR, attention were given to xanthan gum, cellulose, guar gum, and lignin. Polymer flooding is a low-cost chemical injection method with a high rate of success. Polymer flooding has several advantages, including improving oil recovery by minimizing residual oil saturation, decreasing water output from oil well, and requiring less water compared with water flooding. Since the use of polymer flooding in the EOR activities, there is a lot of potential that biopolymers are materials that play a significant role in the application of EOR technology, because environmentally friendly properties and have advantages over synthetic polymers. Biopolymer can be modified to nano materials or grafted with synthetic polymer to improve its properties and stability. It have shear, salinity, and temperature resistance, long-term stability, and large availability, so it making the right choice for applications in oil recovery. Abstract:A novel hyperbranched polymer was synthesized using acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA), N -vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP), and dendrite functional monomer as raw materials by redox initiation system in an aqueous medium. The hyperbranched polymer was characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, 1 H NMR spectroscopy, 13 C NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The viscosity retention rate of the hyperbranched polymer was 22.89% higher than that of the AM/AA copolymer (HPAM) at 95°C, and the viscosity retention rate was 8.17%, 12.49%, and 13.68% higher than that of HPAM in 18000 mg/L NaCl, 1800 mg/L CaCl 2 , and 1800 mg/L MgCl 2 ·6H 2 O brine, respectively. The hyperbranched polymer exhibited higher apparent viscosity (25.2 mPa·s versus 8.1 mPa·s) under 500 s −1 shear rate at 80°C. Furthermore, the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) of 1500 mg/L hyperbranched polymer solutions was up to 23.51% by the core flooding test at 80°C.

Abstract:In this investigation, a unique idea of using a green surfactant derived from Acacia concinna (AC) plant and a hydrophobically modified copolymer consisting of acrylamide and styrene (HSPAM) for chemical enhanced oil recovery (CEOR) was studied. Firstly, the characteristics of AC green surfactant were comprehensively examined using different standard analyses, such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. The thermal stability test of the AC green surfactant demonstrated an acceptable 1.93% weight loss at the 80 °C (reservoir temperature). Additionally, 1 H NMR and FT-IR investigations proved the structure of the saponin compound as the surfactant agent. Then, the compatibility tests revealed no precipitation at various concentrations of different salts. The efficiency of the AC green surfactant and HSPAM was examined with three different salts, including K 2 SO 4 , MgSO 4, and NaCl, as three common salts present in the formation brine (FB) with salinities up to 97,000 ppm. Different experiments, including contact angle and interfacial tension (IFT) measurements, zeta potential measurements, emulsion and core flooding experiments were conducted and the efficiency of these materials for CEOR purposes was examined. The IFT results revealed that 1000 ppm is the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of AC green surfactant in deionized water (DIW). Based on the measured IFT and contact angle values, the most effective salt was K 2 SO 4 , followed by NaCl, and MgSO 4 . The addition of 2000 ppm of HSPAM polymer as the optimum concentration of HSPAM was very efficient in improving the performance of AC green surfactant and producing a higher quality of Winsor type III emulsion. The maximum oil recovery factor of 71.17% was achieved when 1000 ppm of AC green surfactant was injected as the tertiary recovery, and the value was further increased to 77.92% when 2000 ppm of HSPAM and 1000 ppm of AC green surfactant were injected as the tertiary recovery.

Abstract:This study focuses on the synthesis of a series of mixtures of a partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM), noted (H), and a cladode Opuntia ficus-indica mucilage (M). The main objective is to minimize the exclusive dependence of HPAM in the field of tertiary oil recovery, specifically in the process known as EOR. This study showed that a combination of 20% mucilage and 80% HPAM, for a total concentration of 800 ppm in solution, gives rheological performance equivalent to a solution of HPAM alone at 6000 ppm. The resulting mixture which is characterized by viscoelastic liquid behavior, exhibits remarkable flow and elasticity properties. This characteristic is considered favorable for extracting trapped oils from pores under effect of the normal stress. Spectral analysis revealed the presence of silica groups in the mixture, elements widely used in researchers in association with HPAM. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that mucilage decomposition only occurs at temperatures above 200 °C. As the main conclusion, all the physicochemical and rheological data argue in favor of the integration of mucilage in HPAM in order to minimize its concentration in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) applications.

Abstract:Abstract Cellulose-based polymers have garnered significant attention as potential candidates for use in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The challenge in the design of EOR polymers is the need for materials with a high low critical solution temperature (LCST) and the ability to withstand harsh environmental conditions. In this study, cellulose-methylcellulose graft copolymers were prepared with different cellulose to methylcellulose weight ratios. The copolymerization was carried out using gamma radiation doses of 5, 15, and 25 kGy, respectively. The LCST of the copolymers were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry analysis. The effect of salt addition on the LCST of the materials was studied using different phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) concentrations. The results showed that the cellulose monomer concentration increase from 0.1 to 0.5% in 2% methylcellulose dispersed in water reduced the LCST from 59 to 54°C. The hydrophobic nature of cellulose moieties induced the aggregation of the copolymers into core-shell micelles. Besides, higher gamma radiation doses lowered the LCST of the copolymers. The increase in the salt concentration in the PBS medium tended to decrease the LCST due to disrupted hydration structure of the polymer chains. This work revealed that cellulose-methylcellulose copolymers could be used in chemical EOR due to their high phase transition temperatures, preventing pore clogging and enhancing oil production in the producing wells.
