Abstract:For the preventive maintenance engineering of special pavements such as ultra-thin friction courses and bridge deck pavements, the performance requirements of the utilized high-viscosity asphalt, including the resistance to permanent deformation, cracking ability, durability, and recyclability, are becoming increasingly stringent. In this study, based on the click reaction principle of carbon-carbon double (CC) bond, hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) were selected as the raw materials to synthesize thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), and then 4,4’-disulfanediyldiphenol (DSDDP) was introduced as the chain extender to design a high-viscosity thermoplastic polyurethane modified asphalt (PUA). Subsequently, the mechanical and rheological properties of PUA under different types of chain extenders and polyurethane (PU) contents were tested, and the microstructure and modification mechanism were investigated at multiple scales. The results indicated that after the introduction of DSDDP, the basic physical properties and viscosity of PUA were greatly enhanced, the fluidity was significantly reduced, and excellent deformation and cracking resistance were achieved at various temperatures. The microscopic tests revealed that the viscosity enhancement effect mainly originated from the click reaction between the disulfide (S-S) bonds in DSDDP and the CC bonds on the soft segments of PU, which can further crosslink the linear PU molecular chain and form a dense spatial network structure to restrict the flow of macromolecules. The dynamic exchange of some S-S bonds facilitates the repetitive opening of the PUA network structure at high temperatures, so the PUA still exhibits thermoplasticity at high temperatures, which verifies the feasibility of the proposed design. Moreover, the addition of DSDDP reduced the degree of microphase separation of PUA, so the designed PUA can effectively adapt to various temperature environments. Overall, the findings of this study can boost the application of this novel PUA in the thin surface layers of high-performance pavements.

Abstract:One problem of polymer-modified asphalts (PMAs) is the poor compatibility between polymer and asphalts. In this article, the effects of palygorskite clay (PC) and organomodified palygorskite clay (OPC) on the Theological and morphological properties of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) modified asphalts are investigated. The dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) of PC and SBR/PC (OPC) modified asphalts before and after ageing has been characterized by dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). The results indicate that the degree of SBR modification is a function of asphalt-polymer compatibility. When the polymer concentration is higher, it produces a highly elastic network which increases the viscosity, complex modulus, and elastic response of the mixture, particularly at high service temperatures. However, ageing of the SBR and SBR-PC mixtures result in a decrease in the elastic response of the modified asphalts. It also have been confirmed that the morphology observed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed the better compatibility between SBR/PC and asphalt. The storage stability of binder is improved significantly. Compared with PC, OPC shows better effect in improving viscoelastic properties and rutting resistance of the mixture, which contributes to the better improvement of interfacial adhesion based on larger size between layers in OPC-modified asphalts. Comparative Analysis of Rheological and Microscopic Performance of SBS Modified Asphalt Based on Field Aging and Laboratory Aging

Abstract:In this study, the correlation and difference of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) modified asphalt rheological and microscopic performance under field aging and laboratory aging were analyzed. The asphalt recovery experiment obtained SBS modified asphalt after construction aging (CA), 1 year field aging (1A), and 5 years field aging (5A) as field aging samples. The SBS modified asphalt samples were obtained by laboratory aging methods: ultraviolet aging (UV), rotating film oven test (RTFOT), and pressure aging vessel (PAV). Dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR) experiments were applied to test the SBS modified asphalt rheological performance, and infrared spectroscopy (IR) and fluorescence microscopy (FM) were applied to test the SBS modified asphalt microscopic performance. By contrasting the SBS modified asphalt correlation and difference in rheological and microscopic performance during field aging and laboratory aging, the conclusion demonstrates that the degree of rheological and microscopic performance after CA treatment is not significantly different from that after RTFOT treatment. However, from the micro performance analysis, the micro performance indexes of PAV (10H) and PAV (20H) were significantly lower than those of 1A and 5A, and the rheological and micro properties are different after accelerated aging. This suggests that accelerated aging can recover and simulate the behavior in the early stages of field aging, but with increasing age, accelerated aging cannot fully simulate the aging behavior in more complex situations, resulting in a lower degree of accelerated aging than in the mid- to late-stage field aging.
Properties of polymer modified asphalt by polyphosphoric acid through molecular dynamics simulation and experimental analysis

Abstract:Polyphosphoric acid (PPA) plays an important role in improving the performance of polymer modified asphalt binders. This study aims to understand the modification mechanism of PPA in styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) modified asphalt and investigate the rheological and chemical properties after modification based on molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and experimental analysis. Unaged and aged SBR asphalt binders with six PPA contents (0, 0.3%, 0.6%, 0.9%, 1.2%, and 1.5%) were prepared and tested. Four modified asphalt system models in different modifying and aging states were constructed in the molecular dynamics process. The calculated molecular dynamics parameters were used to observe intermolecular behaviors and system phenomena. Dynamic shear rheometry (DSR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were used to characterize rheological and chemical properties respectively. The results showed that the addition of PPA increased the complex modulus (G*) to promote elasticity and stiffness, and then enhanced the rutting resistance of the SBR asphalt binder. Multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) results revealed that PPA/SBR asphalt had a better high-temperature performance than SBR asphalt due to its excellent creep recovery capability. Besides, the interaction between PPA and asphalt introduced phosphorus-containing functional groups into asphalt. In addition, analysis of the free volume and mean square displacement (MSD) displayed larger and higher molecular weight in PPA/SBR asphalt hindered the diffusion and mobility of the system. The radial distribution function (RDF) and radius of gyration (R g ) were calculated to observe that PPA provided a more ordered and more stable molecular structure. The electron density and potential were estimated to explore the adsorption mechanism of PPA to asphalt or SBR molecules and explain the source of stability and orderliness of the unaged and aged PPA/SBR/asphalt system.

Abstract:Styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) is one of the most widely used polymer modifiers for the improvement of the durability of asphalt pavement. SBS functionalization can improve the low-and high-temperature performance and aging resistance of asphalt binders. This paper systematically explores the feasibility of the activation energy of viscous flow (Ea) in evaluating the rheological and aging behavior of functionalized SBS-modified asphalt binders, including SBS-, styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS)-, SEBS-grafted maleic anhydride (MAH)-, and SBS/organic montmorillonite (OMMT) nanocomposites- modified asphalts (SBS-A, SEBS-A, MAH-A, and OSBS-A for short). The Ea values of different functionalized materials were calculated by Arrhenius equation based on Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) and Rotational Viscosimeter (RV) tests, which means that the viscous flow behavior were analyzed at different temperature ranges. Ea based on RV test, the rutting factor and rutting factor aging index came to the same conclusion, that is, SEBS-A and OSBS-A with higher Ea values (lower temperature sensitivity) show excellent rheological properties and better aging resistance, followed by SBS-A, MAH-A, and base asphalt (BA). Besides, Ea based on DSR test was higher than Ea based on RV test, which is related to physical phase (visco-elastic phase and viscous phase). From the perspective of the viscous flow behavior of the binders, Ea based on RV test provides scientific and effective methods for probing the effect of SBS functionalization and designing high capability materials for pavement.
Research on Performance of SBS-PPA and SBR-PPA Compound Modified Asphalts

Abstract:Although several studies indicated that the addition of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) and Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) bring a lot of benefits on properties of asphalt binders, high production costs and poor storage stability confine the manufacture of better modified asphalt. To reduce the production costs, polyphosphoric acid (PPA) was applied to prepare better compound modified asphalt binders. In this research, five PPA (0.5%, 0.75%, 1.0%, 1.25% and 1.5%) and two SBR/SBS (4% and 6%) concentrations were selected. Dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) tests were performed to evaluate the rheological properties of the compound modified asphalt. Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) test was performed to evaluate the aging properties of the compound modified asphalts. The results indicate that SBS/SBR modified asphalts with the addition of PPA show better high-temperature properties significantly, the ability of asphalt to resist rutting is improved, and the elastic recovery is increased. However, the low-temperature properties of the compound modified asphalts are degraded by increasing the creep stiffness (S) and decreasing the creep rate (m). At the same time, RTFO tests results show that PPA was less prone to oxidation to improve the anti-aging ability of modified asphalts. Overall, the combination of 4% SBS and 0.75–1.0% PPA, the combination of 4% SBR and 0.5–0.75% PPA is recommended based on a comprehensive analysis of the performance of compound modified asphalt, respectively, which can be equivalent to 6% SBS/SBR modified asphalt with high-temperature properties, low-temperature properties, temperature sensitivity and aging properties.

Abstract:Polyphosphoric acid (PPA) modifier, which can effectively improve the rheological properties of asphalt, is widely used in pavement engineering. In order to accurately evaluate the low-temperature performance of PPA-modified asphalt, in this study, PPA-modified asphalt and PPA/SBR-modified asphalt were prepared. The modification mechanism was explored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Bending Beam Rheology (BBR) test was carried out, and four indexes, including K index, viscous flow (η1), low-temperature integrated flexibility (Jc), and relaxation time (λ), were obtained by combining the Burgers model. The optimal low-temperature performance evaluation index of modified asphalt was determined by the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The test results show that PPA addition to asphalt will produce chemical reactions, which can effectively improve the compatibility between SBR and neat asphalt. In the multi-index evaluation based on K, η1, Jc, and λ, the same optimum content of PPA was obtained. AHP analysis further demonstrates that Jc is the optimal evaluation index for laboratory research on the low-temperature performance of PPA-modified asphalt, and λ index is the ideal evaluation index for the low-temperature performance of asphalt in engineering applications.

Abstract:In order to address the high preparation cost of styrene–butadiene–styrene block copolymer (SBS) modified asphalt, four kinds of polyphosphoric acid (PPA) content (0%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1% PPA by weight of the matrix asphalt) were selected to prepare composite modified asphalt with better high-temperature performance. The physical properties of composite modified asphalt were evaluated by conventional performance tests. The rheological properties of composite modified asphalt were evaluated by dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) test and bending beam rheometer (BBR) test. The synergistic modification mechanism of PPA and SBS was revealed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy test. The results show that with the increase of PPA content, the penetration of PPA/SBS composite modified asphalt is reduced by 20.92%, 25.07% and 28.94%, respectively, compared with matrix asphalt, and the softening point is increased by 5.46%, 22.69% and 34.03%, respectively. In addition, PPA can improve the thermal oxidative aging resistance of asphalt. PPA can improve the shear resistance, high-temperature performance and temperature sensitivity of asphalt. At 82 °C, compared with SBS modified asphalt, the phase angle of PPA/SBS composite modified asphalt decreased by 8.63%, 13.23% and 19.24%, respectively, and G*/sinδ increased by 41.97%, 67.62% and 70.97%, respectively. SBS mainly exists in asphalt in the form of physical blending, and PPA has a new chemical reaction with asphalt, which increases the macromolecules and chain hydrocarbon components in asphalt, and the macroscopic performance is the improvement of high-temperature performance of asphalt. However, PPA has a negative effect on the low-temperature performance of the SBS modified asphalt.

Abstract:Cholangiocarcinoma is a highly‐malignant adenocarcinoma originating from cholangiocytes. Current concepts support escape from immune surveillance using aberrant expression of Fas ligand (FasL) and dysregulation of receptor (FasR) signaling as a potential mechanism for tumor progression. Our aims were to determine if altered expression of FasR and FasL or changes in expression of FLICE inhibitor (I‐FLICE) allow cholangiocarcinoma cells to escape immune surveillance. Human cholangiocarcinoma cell lines were evaluated for the functional expression of FasR and FasL by (1) quantitating apoptosis after incubation of cells with agonistic antibodies and (2) an in vitro cell death assay involving coculture of cholangiocarcinoma cells with Fas‐sensitive thymocytes. I‐FLICE antisense treatment was performed by stable transfection with complementary DNA (cDNA) for I‐FLICE in the reverse orientation. We found that normal cholangiocytes in vivo express FasL. Human cholangiocarcinoma cell lines express both FasL and FasR and I‐FLICE. FasL expressed by cholangiocarcinomas in vitro induced lymphocyte cell death (70% after 24 hours). Despite the expression of FasR, exposure of the cells to agonistic antibodies (500 ng/mL) induced only minimal apoptosis in the Jurkat cells. Antisense treatment of cholangiocarcinomas in vitro with I‐FLICE reduced protein expression of I‐FLICE by 90% to 95% and increased Fas‐mediated apoptosis 2‐fold. We concluded that cholangiocarcinomas escape immune surveillance either by disabling FasR signaling through the expression of I‐FLICE and/or increased FasL expression to induce apoptosis of invading T cells. Reduction of I‐FLICE expression in cholangiocarcinoma cells restored Fas‐mediated apoptosis. Therapeutic maneuvers to inhibit expression of I‐FLICE may aid in the treatment of cholangiocarcinoma.
High-Temperature Characteristics of Polyphosphoric Acid-Modified Asphalt and High-Temperature Performance Prediction Analysis of Its Mixtures

Abstract:To promote the application of economical and sustainable polyphosphoric acid (PPA)-modified asphalt in road engineering, styrene-butadiene block copolymer (SBS), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), and PPA were used to prepare PPA/SBS and PPA/SBR composite-modified asphalts, which were tested and the data analyzed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) tests were carried out to study the modification mechanisms of the composite-modified asphalts, and the high-temperature performance of the PPA-modified asphalt and asphalt mixtures was analyzed by dynamic shear rheology (DSR) tests and wheel tracking tests. A gray correlation analysis and a back-propagation (BP) neural network were utilized to construct a prediction model of the high-temperature performance of the asphalt and asphalt mixtures. The test results indicate that PPA chemically interacts with the base asphalt and physically integrates with SBS and SBR. The PPA-modified asphalt has a higher decomposition temperature than the base asphalt, indicating superior thermal stability. As the PPA dosage increases, the G*/sinδ value of the PPA-modified asphalt also increases. In particular, when 0.6% PPA is combined with 2% SBS/SBR, it surpasses the high-temperature performance achieved with 4% SBS/SBR, suggesting that PPA may be a good alternative for polymer modifiers. In addition, the creep recovery of PPA-modified asphalt is influenced by the stress level, and as the stress increases, the R-value decreases, resulting in reduced elastic deformation. Furthermore, the BP neural network model achieved a fit of 0.991 in predicting dynamic stability, with a mean percentage of relative error (MAPE) of 6.15% between measured and predicted values. This underscores the feasibility of using BP neural networks in predictive dynamic stability models.

Abstract:As an environmentally friendly alternative for the production of high-performance modified asphalt by chemical reactions, a liquid-state polyurethane-precursor-based reactive modifier (PRM) was developed and employed in the asphalt modification. In contrast to the traditional solid bitumen modifier, for example, rubber and thermoplastic elastomers, the PRM as a liquid modifier has more significant advantages in reducing energy consumption and improving asphalt performance, which has attracted widespread attention. However, the aging resistance and its mechanism are not clear. In view of this, the aging performance of two PRM-modified bitumen (PRM-70 and PRM-90), under the short-term thermo-oxidative aging, long-term thermo-oxidative aging, and ultraviolet (UV) aging conditions, was investigated through chemical and mechanical methods. The results show that the PRM-90 is more susceptible to the thermos-oxidative aging and UV aging. The use of low-penetration-grade bitumen and ensuring an adequate reaction are beneficial to enhance the aging resistance of PRM-modified bitumen. The impact of aging on high-temperature performance of PRM-modified bitumen is great, followed by the low-temperature performance and the anti-fatigue performance. The mechanic-relevant rheological aging index (RAI) and fracture energy index (FEI) are recommended to evaluate aging properties for PRM-modified bitumen. This study not only provides support for further research on the relationship between the aging properties and mechanical performance of PRM-modified bitumen, but also provides a reference for conducting mechanism analysis.

Abstract:The influence of self‐healing accelerators on the high and low temperature performance and aging behavior of asphalt binder under vehicle loads and harsh environments. Polymer modified asphalt containing dynamic chemical bonds has the potential to increase the service life of asphalt pavement due to its excellent self‐healing ability. The effect of this self‐healing accelerator with dynamic chemical bond on the rheological properties and aging resistance of asphalt binder is still unclear. In this study, a self‐healing polyurea elastomer (PUA) modified asphalt containing dynamic disulfide bonds was prepared. The high‐ and low‐temperature performance and fatigue resistance of PUA modified asphalt were studied through multiple stress creep, low‐temperature bending beam rheometer, mechanical glass transition temperature, and linear amplitude scanning tests. Moreover, considering the service environment of asphalt over a wide temperature range (−30–70°C), three rheological aging indices (RAI) were proposed. At the same time, the aging resistance of PUA modified asphalt was evaluated by chemical aging index (CAI) based on carbonyl and sulfoxide groups. Finally, a linear relationship is established between RAI and CAI over a wide temperature range. The experimental results show that self‐healing accelerators can increase the resistance to permanent deformation of asphalt by 47.41% and the fatigue resistance by 88.54%. The S value of PUA modified asphalt decreased by at most 33.21% and the m value increased by at most 35.23% compared with BA at −18°C. Moreover, PUA can improve the long‐term thermal oxygen aging resistance of asphalt binders by at least 38.33% over a wide temperature range. Abstract:To improve the thermal-aging stability and rheological performance of styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR)-modified asphalt, phenolic resin (PF) was introduced in the process of preparing SBR-modified asphalt by melt blending. The effect of PF and SBR on the high and low-temperature rheological performance of the asphalt binder before and after aging was evaluated by a temperature and frequency sweep using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and fluorescence microscopy (FM) were used to further investigate the effect of PF and SBR on the thermal stability and morphological characteristics of the asphalt binder. The results showed that the addition of PF can enhance the high-temperature deformation resistance and short-term aging resistance of SBR-modified asphalt. Moreover, PF and SBR form an embedded network structure within the asphalt binder and alleviate the deterioration of the polymer during the aging process. Compared with SBR-modified asphalt, the chemical system of composite-modified asphalt is more stable, and it can remain stable with an aging time of less than 5 h.

Abstract:To evaluate the thermal stability of composite polymer-modified asphalt, thermoplastic elastomer styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR)/polypropylene (PP) pellets were prepared using a hot-melt blending technique, with butyl rubber powder and waste polypropylene pellets as raw materials. The effects of different evaluation indexes on the thermal stability of SBR/PP-modified asphalt were investigated using a frequency scan test and a multi-stress creep recovery (MSCR) test, and the compatibility of SBR/PP particles with asphalt was studied using the Cole–Cole diagram and microstructure images. The tests show that, firstly, the performance grade (PG) classification of asphalt can be improved by adding an SBR/PP thermoplastic elastomer to enhance the adaptability of asphalt in high- and low-temperature environments, and the evaluation separation index can reflect the high-temperature storage stability of composite-modified asphalt more reasonably. Additionally, the larger the rubber-to-plastic ratio the worse the high-temperature thermal stability of composite-modified asphalt. Moreover, the addition of additives to the composite particles can promote the SBR/PP particles in the asphalt to be more uniformly dispersed, forming a more desirable microstructure and improving the thermal stability of composite-modified asphalt. Ultimately, the semicircular curve of the Cole–Cole diagram can reflect the compatibility characteristics of the two-phase structure of SBR/PP-modified asphalt, which can be used as an auxiliary index to evaluate the compatibility of polymer-modified asphalt.

Abstract:The superior performance of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt makes it widely used in asphalt pavement construction. However, SBS-modified asphalt pavement still faces an aging problem. Aging causes the performance of asphalt materials to decline and many pavement diseases. The dosage of SBS commonly used in industry is generally between 3% and 4.5%, and the performance of SBS with a high dosage needs to be explored. Therefore, in this paper, 12 modified binders were prepared with blending amounts of 3%, 5%, and 7% and the type of modifiers as linear and star. The softening point increment (SPI), viscosity aging index (VAI), rutting factor index (RFI), complex modulus aging index (CMAI), and phase angle aging index (PAAI) were used to study the antiaging performance of SBS-modified asphalt. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) were used to study the microscopic and structural changes that occur during the aging process of modified asphalt. The result shows that when the amount of the same type of modifier is 3%–7%, the higher the amount of modifier, the better the performance of the modified asphalt. At the same content, a star modifier is not necessarily better than a linear modifier. For the same type of modifier, the larger the amount, the better the antiaging performance of the modified asphalt. Given an increase in aging time, the deterioration of the asphalt performance will deepen. Aging leads to the enhanced high-temperature performance of asphalt. The macroscopic performance of asphalt aging can be explained by the microscopic view. The aging process of modified asphalt is the cumulative process of oxidation products.

Abstract:In road engineering, SBS modifier has been widely applied in China to enhance the quality of asphalt pavement. However, without considering the physical and chemical properties of SBS modifier and the asphalt substrate, alternative polymerization methods for asphalt modification that offer better performance and economic benefits have not been explored. In this study, an approach was taken to compound modify the base asphalt by incorporating Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR). The high and low temperature rheological properties of the modified asphalt were examined using tests such as Rotational Viscosity (RV) test, Dynamic Shear Rheological test (DSR), Multiple Stress Creep Rheological test (MSCR), and Bending Beam Rheological test (BBR). The modification mechanism of the mixed modified asphalt, combining SBR and TPU, was investigated through fluorescence microscope testing. The RV test revealed that the inclusion of TPU and SBR enhanced the viscosity of the asphalt to a certain extent, affording it favorable workability during construction and improved resistance against high temperature deformation. DSR and MSCR tests demonstrated that the incorporation of TPU significantly bolstered the external load resistance, deformation recovery, rutting resistance, and overall stability of the SBR modified asphalt under high temperature conditions; The BBR test proves that the composite modified asphalt has excellent low temperature crack resistance. The FM tests have shown that TPU are effective in reducing the segregation that may occur in SBR-modified asphalt, thus improving the performance of the composite modified asphalt.

Abstract:Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS) polymer-modified asphalt binders have become widely used in asphalt pavement because of their advantages in high- and low-temperature performance and fatigue resistance. Asphalt pavement is inevitably exposed to sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) radiation during its construction and service life. However, consideration of the aging effect of UV radiation is still limited in current pavement design and evaluation systems. In order to evaluate the impact of UV radiation on the aging properties of SBS-modified asphalt binders, UV aging tests were performed on Rolling Thin Film Oven Test (RTFOT)-aged samples with different UV radiation intensities and aging times. Sixteen different groups of tests were conducted to compare the rheological properties and functional group characteristics of SBS-modified asphalt binders. Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR), Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR), FTIR, and SEM tests were conducted to evaluate the aging mechanisms in various UV aging conditions. The results found that UV radiation seriously destroys the network structure formed by the cross-linking effect in SBS-modified asphalt binders, which aggravates the degradation of SBS and results in a great change of rheological properties after UV aging. The nature of SBS-modified asphalt binder aging resulted from the degradation of SBS and the changes of asphalt binder base composition, which lead to the transformation of colloidal structure and the deterioration of asphalt binder performance. The tests also found that continuous UV radiation can increase shrinkage stress in the asphalt binder surface and leads to surface cracking of the asphalt binder.

Abstract:Polyurethane (PU) is one of the common polymer modifiers used for asphalt, and the PU modified asphalt currently plays a fundamental role in road constructions. However, most of the PU as the modification could bring about an increasement in viscosity and rigidity to asphalt binders, thus leading to insufficient ductility and deformation compatibility for the materials to some extent. In the present study, a composite polymer material synthesized with polyurethane and polyurea (PU-PUa) was introduced as a modifier to the asphalt binder in an attempt to integrate their individual advantages into the asphaltic material. The curing time, tensile strength, and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests were conducted to determine the optimal proportion of the PU and PUa in the compound polymer, and its formation mechanism was also discussed. The fundamental properties of the asphalt binders modified with various contents of PU-PUa (5%, 10%, and 15% by weight), such as the storage stability, rheological properties, creep recovery capacity, and fatigue resistance, were investigated through the thermal storage, dynamic rheological, stress creep recovery (MSCR), and linear amplitude sweep (LAS) tests. Furthermore, in order to understand the adhesion property of the PU-PUa modified asphalt on aggregates, the pull-off tests considering both dry and water immersion conditions were performed. The test results showed that the PU-PUa could be effectively used to modify asphalt binders, and 7:3 was found to be the best proportion of the PU and PUa. The addition of PU-PUa could promote the high temperature performance, enhance the recovery ability for creep, and extend the fatigue life of the asphalt binders (for both 70# and SBS asphalt). The optimal content of PU-PUa for the modification was found to be 10% based on the storage stability and mechanical performance of the modified asphalt binders.

Abstract:To promote the application of environmentally-friendly and sustainable bio-asphalt (BA) in road engineering, polyphosphoric acid (PPA) and styrene–butadienestyrene (SBS) were used to prepare BA/PPA/SBS composite modified asphalt. The mechanical properties of composite modified asphalt and the interaction mechanism of each modifier were investigated through conventional property, rheological property, infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopy test, and gravimetry analysis for SARAs fractions. The conventional property test results show that PPA and BA improve the storage stability of SBS modified asphalt, and the composite modified asphalt with lower SBS content still has excellent performance. The rheological property test results show that the decrease of SBS content has negative effect on the rheological property of asphalt. But in general, the composite modified asphalt has good high-temperature deformation resistance. The IR-spectra of BA before and after reacting with PPA indicates that the chemical composition of the BA in this study was mainly sugar alcohols, and the esterification reaction occurred during reaction with PPA. By comparing the fluorescence images, it was found that the BA significantly improve the dispersion and compatibility of SBS particles in asphalt. The SARAs fractions analysis shows that the composite modified asphalts have higher content of asphaltenes and aromatics.
