Abstract:Low-cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior of nickel-based precipitation-strengthened superalloy GH4145/SQ was investigated systematically under fully reversed total strain amplitude control conditions at 538°C in laboratory air. It was shown that the alloy exhibited a pronounced initial fatigue hardening followed by continuous fatigue softening to failure at high strain amplitudes, while at low strain amplitudes the initial hardening was followed by a well-defined saturation stage. Microstructure observations using optical and transmission-electron microscopy revealed that slip band density increased with increasing total strain amplitudes and the size of the γ′precipitates tended to reduction due to repeated shearing by the dislocations with continuous cyclic straining. The above changes in microstructures during cycling were essentially responsible for the fatigue hardening–softening behavior of the alloy. Both optical and SEM micrographs indicated that at low strain amplitudes crack propagation was basically transgranular, while at high strain amplitudes crack propagation was essentially intergranular. Bilinear behavior with a change of slope at a plastic strain amplitude of about 0.2pct was observed in cyclic stress–strain (CSS), Coffin–Manson (C–M) and plastic strain energy–life plots. A change in the number of operating slip systems and the fracture modes with the strain amplitude employed was used to explain this two-slope characteristic. In both the companion specimens test (CST) and the incremental step test (IST) methods the alloy exhibited non-masing type behavior. It was suggested that, for the first approximation, the half-life plastic strain energy could be calculated directly according to the equation without reckoning in the non-masing behavior.
Strain Ratio Effects on Low-Cycle Fatigue Behavior and Deformation Microstructure of 2124-T851 Aluminum Alloy

Abstract:The low-cycle fatigue tests of 2124-T851 aluminum alloy with strain ratios of −1, −0.06, 0.06 and 0.5 were conducted under constant amplitude at room temperature. Microstructural and fractographic examinations of the material after fatigue tests were performed by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Firstly, the results showed that the material exhibited cyclic softening characteristic as a whole. The degree of softening decreased linearly with the increasing strain amplitude and the decreasing strain ratio. The lower fatigue life and ductility of the material corresponded to the larger strain ratios. Secondly, microstructure observations revealed that the density and length of slip bands increased with the increasing strain ratio at the given strain amplitude, and so did the volume fraction and size of coarse constituents, which were responsible for the reduction of fatigue life and ductility of the material. Finally, the SEM micrographs revealed that multiple crack initiation sites took place on the fracture surfaces at different strain ratios. The reduction of stable crack growth area with the increasing strain ratio was observed. Unstable crack growth region was only observed under R≠−1.

Abstract:Low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were performed on Ti-6Al-4V alloy at room temperature. The fatigue hardening/softening of the Ti-alloy were determined. Both the back stress (X) and the friction stress (σF) were evaluated from analysis of fatigue hysteresis loops and their cycle-dependent behaviors during fatigue tests were obtained experimentally. It is shown that the cyclic stress response or the fatigue hardening/softening of the Ti-alloy actually results from the competition effect of the back and the friction stress behaviors during fatigue cycling. A two-slope behavior in both the εpa-2Nf and the X-2Nf plots was also obtained. The micro-mechanisms associated with the back and friction stress behaviors as well as the two-slope behavior in the εpa-2Nf and X-2Nf plots were further discussed with the help of OM and TEM observations of fatigue failure specimens at representative strain amplitudes. In this study, the DIC technique was also introduced to characterize quantitatively the cyclic deformation heterogeneity of the Ti-alloy at the grain scale.

Abstract:AbstractIn the present study, 5052 Al alloy was processed through different rolling methods to obtain ultrafine grains and its high-cycle fatigue behavior were investigated. The solution-treated Al-Mg alloys (AA 5052) were deformed through different methods such as cryorolling (CR), cryo groove rolling (CGR) and cryo groove rolling followed by warm rolling (CGW), up to 75% thickness reduction. The deformed samples were subjected to mechanical testing such as hardness, tensile and high-cycle fatigue (HCF) test at stress control mode. The CGW samples exhibit better HCF strength when compared to other conditions. The microstructure of the tested samples was characterized by optical microscopy, SEM fractography and TEM to understand the deformation behavior of deformed Al alloy. The improvement in fatigue life of CR and CGR samples is due to effective grain refinement, subgrain formations, and high dislocation density observed in the heavily deformed samples at cryogenic condition as observed from SEM and TEM analysis. However, in case of CGW samples, formation of nanoshear bands accommodates the applied strain during cyclic loading, thereby facilitating dislocation accumulation along with subgrain formations, leading to the high fatigue life. The deformed or broken impurity phase particles found in the deformed samples along with the precipitates that were formed during warm rolling also play a prominent role in enhancing the fatigue strength. These tiny particles hindered the dislocation movement by effectively pinning it at grain boundaries, thereby improving the resistance of crack propagation under cyclic load.

Abstract:Anisotropy is a phenomenon that always exists in the rolled plates of aluminum alloys and may affect the uniformity to some extent. Previous studies mainly focus on the anisotropy with respect to the tensile properties, whereas the anisotropy effect on high‐cycle fatigue (HCF) behavior is often ignored. Therefore, the effect of anisotropy on HCF property along the rolling direction (RD) and the transverse direction (TD) of a 7xxx aluminum alloy super‐thick plate is mainly investigated in this study. The results show a similar microstructure at different thicknesses, and the HCF properties are close as well. The fatigue fracture morphologies show that the fatigue crack sources are all located on the surfaces of the RD and TD specimens. By considering the differences in the HCF properties, there is only a slight anisotropy effect at the center thickness of the plate, which can be attributed to the tensile anisotropy caused by textures. Besides, the fatigue damage degree along the TD is slightly higher than that along the RD at the center thickness. The reason can be explained by two aspects: one is the higher probability of defect occurrence along the TD compared with that along the RD which is analyzed by our previously proposed Y‐T‐F model, and the other is the influence of the textures. The combination of hard and soft orientations may cause fatigue damage localization easily in the soft‐oriented grains which accelerates the fatigue failure. This article is protected by copyright. Anisotropic Low Cycle Behavior of the Extruded 7075 Al Alloy

Abstract:The quasi-static and low cycle fatigue tests of extruded 7075 Al alloy (Φ200 mm) were investigated in three directions: the extrusion direction (ED), the radial direction (RD), and 45° with ED (45°). Grain morphology analysis, texture measurement, and fatigue fracture characterization were conducted to discuss the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties. The experimental results showed that the ED specimen had higher ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and low cycle fatigue (LCF) properties, which were mainly attributed to the following three causes. First, the grain boundaries (GBs) had an obvious effect on the crack growth. The number of GBs in the three directions was different due to the shape of the grains elongated along the ED. Second, the sharp texture and the small Schmidt factor along the ED explained the higher ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the ED specimens. Third, fatigue fracture observation showed that the ED specimen had a narrow fatigue striation spacing, which indicated that the plastic deformation of the ED specimen was the smallest in each cycle. In addition, two fatigue prediction models were established to predict the LCF life of extruded 7075 Al alloy, based on the life response behavior of the three directions under different strains.

Multiaxial Fatigue Behaviour of A356-T6

Abstract:Aluminum alloy A356-T6 was subjected to fully reversed cyclic loading under tension, torsion and combined loading. Results indicate that endurance limits are governed by maximum principal stress. Fractography demonstrates long shear mode III propagation with multiple initiation sites under torsion. Under other loadings, fracture surfaces show unique initiation sites coincidental to defects and mode I crack propagation. Using the replica technique, it has been shown that the initiation life is negligible for fatigue lives close to 1E6 cycles for combined loading. The natural crack growth rate has also been shown to be comparable to long cracks in similar materials.

Abstract:Purpose The majority of machine component failures are caused by load conditions that change with time. Under those circumstances, the component can function effectively for a long time but then breaks down unexpectedly and without warning. Therefore, the study of fatigue considerations in design becomes important. Also, to determine the component's long-term tenability, fatigue behavior must be investigated. This paper aims to investigate the fatigue life of aluminum 6061-T6 alloy under uniaxial loading using experiments and finite element simulation. Design/methodology/approach Both base metal (BM) and friction stir welding (FSW) configurations have been used to analyze fatigue behavior. The experimental tests were carried out using Instron-8801 hydraulic fatigue testing machine at frequency of 20 Hz and load ratio of 0.1. The yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, amplitude stress and fatigue life were used as input in simulation analysis software. Based on the findings of the tensile test, the maximum stress applied during the fatigue testing was estimated. Simulated and experimental results were also used to plot and validate the S-N curves. The fracture behavior of specimens was also examined using fractographic analysis. Findings The fractured surfaces indicate both brittle and ductile failure in the specimens. However, dimples dominated during the final fracture. The comparison between experimental and simulation results illustrates that the difference in fatigue cycles increases with an increase in the yield strength of both BM and FSWed specimens. This disparity is attributed to many factors such as scratches, rough surfaces and microstructural behavior. Aluminum 6061-T6 alloy is considered a noteworthy material where high strength with reduced weight contributes to the crash-worthy design of automobile structures. Originality/value The current study is significant in the prediction of the fatigue life of aluminum 6061-T6 alloy using experiments and simulation analysis. A good correlation was found when the experimental and simulation analysis were compared. The proposed simulation analysis approach can be used to anticipate a component's fatigue life.

Abstract:Al2618 high-strength aluminum alloy was subjected to precipitation hardening at T6 tempering conditions to improve its mechanical properties for employing it as the spacecraft skin material. Nine specimens of Al2618 artificially aged alloy were prepared according to the ASTM-E606/E606M-12 standard and tested through the S-N curve method. It resulted in the fatigue strength of Al2618 being 150 MPa, which is better than the existing Al2024-T3 alloy by about 8.7%. An increment of 59.9% and 3.2% of fatigue life and fatigue strength for the infinite fatigue life of the alloy was identified through the Basquin Equation and Kohout-Věchet method, respectively, in correspondence with Al2024-T3. The fractographic analysis of the broken materials was investigated with the support of SEM images; the failure mechanism and causes for the failures were discussed.

Abstract:Aluminum alloys are attractive for use in structural materials in the aerospace industry, such as for wings and fuselages, due to their high specific strength. The 7075-T6 aluminum alloy is the most competitive alloy in this field because of its good resistance to corrosion and excellent relative density. Ductile damage initiation and evolution in the 7075-T6 aluminum alloy are considered and analyzed under static tension and fully reversed constant amplitude low-cycle fatigue. The damage criteria are implemented with an explicit dynamic finite element model. The static tensile damage data are compared with published experimental results. The S–N curve and surface damage under fatigue are well predicted. Hysteresis loops and strain amplitudes are measured. Moreover, the effects of cycle frequency inputs of 10 Hz and 100 Hz are studied. It is determined that increasing the average input frequency and stress amplitude affects both the fracture surface and the fatigue life. An analysis of the hysteresis loop during loading shows that the material is involved in strain hardening during the first hundred cycles and then softens before failure occurs.

Abstract:Materials for lightweight vehicle structures play an increasingly important role in both economic and environmental terms; high-strength steels and aluminum alloys are suitable for this role. Resistance spot welding (RSW) and conventional clinching (CCL) methods can be used for joining vehicle bodies and can also be applied for aluminum/steel hybrid joints. Whereas vehicle structures are subjected to cyclic loading, damages can occur due to high-cycle fatigue (HCF) during long-term operation. Systematic HCF test results are rarely found in the literature, while HCF loading basically determines the lifetime of the hybrid joints. The base materials 5754-H22, 6082-T6, and DP600 were used for similar and hybrid RSW and CCL joints, and HCF tests were performed. The number of cycles-to-failure values and failure modes were studied and analyzed. Based on the experimental results, HCF design curves belonging to a 50% failure probability were calculated for all cases, and the curves were compared. Clear relationships were found between the failure modes and fatigue cycle numbers for both joining methods. Considering the steel/steel joints as a base, the load-bearing capacity of the hybrid joints is lower (48.7% and 73.0% for RSW, 35.0% and 38.7% for CCL) and it is even lower for the aluminum/aluminum joints (39.9% and 50.4% for RSW, 31.7% and 35.0% for CCL). With one exception, the load-bearing capacity of the CCL joints is higher than that of the RSW joints (156.1–108.3%).

Abstract:The work reports an extensive experimental campaign for the aluminium lithium alloy Al-Li 2198-T851. Static, fatigue and fatigue crack-growth behaviour was investigated through tests on laboratory specimens manufactured along the longitudinal and transversal orientation with respect to the rolling direction. Microstructure was observed through macro-graphic evaluations and a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).It was found that the 2198-T851 provided enhanced mechanical properties with respect to 2024-T3 for both transversal and longitudinal rolling direction. Nonetheless, a significantly different behaviour was observed for the transversal direction that provided mechanical performances from 5 to 30 % lower than those measured longitudinally.

Abstract:The new fatigue data sheet, No. 133, discloses low- and high-cycle fatigue properties of A2017-T4 aluminium alloys. Two types of low-cycle fatigue tests were conducted under strain-controlled conditions. One comprised incremental step tests to clarify cyclic stress-strain curves. The other comprised constant- strain amplitude tests to clarify the fatigue lives. The aluminium alloys revealed strong cyclic hardening that resulted in very high cycle yield stresses. The cyclic yield stresses were higher than those of titanium alloys and steels. Constant-strain amplitude tests showed plastic strain amplitudes to be smaller in most cases than elastic strain amplitudes. These appeared to be attributable to the small elongation, low elastic modulus and strong cyclic hardening of the aluminium alloys. Three heats of A2017-T4 revealed equivalent fatigue lives when their fatigue strengths were evaluated by strain amplitude. Evaluation by stress amplitude, in contrast, resulted in differences between heats, likely caused by the effects of cyclic yield stress. The high-cycle fatigue tests up to 10 8 cycles were uniaxial and carried out under load-controlled conditions. Many specimens fractured at over 10 7 cycles, so fatigue limits were not confirmed. The high-cycle fatigue strengths were proportional to the tensile strengths. The 10 7 -cycle fatigue strengths were close to those of austenitic stainless steels and normalized carbon steels, while the 10 8 -cycle fatigue strengths were lower. In short, the fatigue strengths deceased at over 10 7 cycles, showing the need for gigacycle fatigue tests. These will be described in the next issue. GRAPHICAL
Effects of aging temperature on microstructure and high cycle fatigue performance of 7075 aluminum alloy

Abstract:The hardness, the tensile and the high-cycle fatigue (HCF) performances of 7075 aluminum alloy were investigated under temper T651, solution treated at 380 °C for 0.5 h and aged at different temperatures (150, 170, 190 °C) for 10 hours. The optimal microstructures and the fatigue fracture surfaces were observed. The results show that the hardness and the tensile performances are at their optimum at T651, but the fatigue life is the shortest. The hardness and the elongation are the lowest after solution treatment. With the aging temperature increasing (150-190 °C), the HCF is improved. The crack is initiated from the impurity particles on the subsurface. Treated at 170 °C,the area of the quasi-cleavage plane and the width of parallel serrated sections of the crack propagation are the largest. With increasing aging temperature, the dimple size of finally fracture surfaces becomes larger and the depth deeper.

Abstract:Axial loading fatigue tests were conducted with two stress ratios to investigate fracture surface behavior and associated failure analysis governing crack nucleation of TC11 titanium alloy at two working temperatures, spanning high-cycle and very high-cycle fatigue regimes. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, and electron-backscattered diffraction techniques were employed to analyze the cracking mechanism. The interior failure is attributed to the cleavage of the large equiaxed α p -grains and facet-facet cluster area-fisheye formation. Moreover, the crack growth threshold values and the transition sizes from small to long cracks decrease with temperature rise. In addition, small cracks follow the path that requires minimum energy for propagation as per the microstructural orientation and are governed by maximum shear stress, resulting in the formation of crystallographic facets. Based on the analysis above, the interior fracture mechanism was summarized as related to the microstructure characteristics. Considering the fatigue cracking behavior and microstructural features, a model for predicting crack nucleation life is developed, exhibiting a better consistency between predicted and experimental fatigue lives.

Abstract:Aluminum alloys as building materials are more sensitive to stress concentrations and crack development.Heat treatment,artificial aging,and extrusion molding reduce the fatigue strength and fatigue resistance of aluminum alloy.This paper investigates the fatigue properties of two typical aluminum alloys, 6061-T6 and 6005-T5,by conventional fatigue tests.The plate specimens were tested for cyclic tensile loading with fatigue lives from 104 to 2×106 cycles.The S-N curves show that the fatigue strength of these aluminum alloys is proportional to their tensile strength with the higher strength alloy having higher fatigue strength.

Abstract:The study investigates fatigue failure, a common phenomenon in machine elements subjected to cyclic stresses. The analysis emphasizes that the actual stress experienced by materials often falls below their tensile and yield strengths due to repetitive variable stresses, leading to fatigue damage. Fatigue life is measured by the number of cycles endured before failure. This paper focuses on the aluminum alloy of AlSi10MgMn, extensively used in manufacturing due to its strength, low density, and corrosion resistance. Experimental procedures encompassed tensile testing, microstructural examination, SEM analysis, and fatigue testing. Tensile tests provided initial stress values for fatigue testing. Microstructure analyses verified that heat-treated samples exhibited precipitates. SEM analysis disclosed microstructural characteristics, while fracture surface examinations demonstrated higher fatigue resistance in heat-treated specimens. Hardness measurements were conducted, with heat-treated samples showing higher values. Theoretical calculations based on stress and cycle numbers were compared to experimental fatigue results. The derived equations aligned well with the tests. Ultimately, the study underlines the importance of heat treatment on material behavior and fatigue resistance, shedding light on alloy performance and durability enhancement.

Abstract:The purpose of this investigation was to study the low-cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior of a newly developed high-pressure die-cast (HPDC) Al-5.5Mg-2.5Si-0.6Mn-0.2Fe (AlMgSiMnFe) alloy. The effect of heat-treatment in comparison with its as-cast counterpart was also identified. The layered (α-Al + Mg2Si) eutectic structure plus a small amount of Al8(Fe,Mn)2Si phase in the as-cast condition became an in-situ Mg2Si particulate-reinforced aluminum composite with spherical Mg2Si particles uniformly distributed in the α-Al matrix after heat treatment. Due to the spheroidization of intermetallic phases including both Mg2Si and Al8(Fe,Mn)2Si, the ductility and hardening capacity increased while the yield stress (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) decreased. Portevin–Le Chatelier effect (or serrated flow) was observed in both tensile stress–strain curves and initial hysteresis loops during cyclic deformation because of dynamic strain aging caused by strong dislocation–precipitate interactions. The alloy exhibited cyclic hardening in both as-cast and heat-treated conditions when the applied total strain amplitude was above 0.4%, below which cyclic stabilization was sustained. The heat-treated alloy displayed a larger plastic strain amplitude and a lower stress amplitude at a given total strain amplitude, demonstrating a superior fatigue resistance in the LCF regime. A simple equation based on the stress amplitude of the first and mid-life cycles ((Δσ/2)first, (Δσ/2)mid) was proposed to characterize the degree of cyclic hardening/softening (D): D=±(Δσ/2)mid − (Δσ/2)first(Δσ/2)first, where the positive sign “+” represents cyclic hardening and the negative sign “−“ reflects cyclic softening.

Abstract:The detecting and evaluating fatigue performance of aluminum alloys with wide applications have important engineering significance. Three types of aluminum alloys, 1060, 3003 and 6063, were selected to conducted research on tensile and high cycle fatigue properties. It can be found that the relationship between the tensile strength and fatigue strength is not monotonically increasing, the mechanism was also analyzed. The fracture surface and microstructure before and after fatigued were analyzed using scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope, the effect of "localized reinforcement" can make the fatigue strength of alloy higher, and the evolution of dislocations under cyclic loading have a significant impact on the tendency of muti-source cracking and fatigue performance. Meanwhile, the positions of knee points and the scatter of the fatigue S-N curves were effect by the strength of materials.

Abstract:High cycle fatigue (HCF) behavior of Ni superalloy 617M is investigated at 973 K and R‐ratio −1 on a resonance‐based fatigue testing system at 85 Hz frequency. The alloy experiences an abrupt drop in fatigue life within a narrow domain of 2.5–5 MPa near its fatigue strength at 320 MPa. Electron microscopy and diffraction techniques were employed to thoroughly analyze the nominal fatigue damage. The characterization revealed the significance of precipitation of secondary phases M23C6, Ti (C, N), and γ′ phase in dictating the HCF strength of the alloy. Cyclic loading at high temperature causes γ‐matrix hardening and secondary phase precipitation synergistically strengthening the material beyond its yield strength. Conjunctively, dynamic strain aging was also seen to play a major role in the evolution of fatigue damage. The work highlights the collective contribution of γ′‐phase precipitation, carbides, and dynamic strain aging and their influence on the HCF behavior of alloy 617M.
