Abstract:Objective o research the effects of different recovery ways on muscle activity and comfort level based on maximum voluntary contraction force,EMG signal and muscle temperature after the multifidus and erector spinae muscles are getting fatigued.Methods Twelve subjects took different recovery ways which include meditation, active exercise, electrical stimulation and low, medium and high frequency vibration after their multifidus and erector spinae muscles were getting acute fatigued.Results One way ANOVA shows that different ways of recovery do not affect MVC significantly, but have effect on AEMG of erector spinae muscle.AEMG of erector spinae muscle is higher than others when electrical stimulation and mechanical vibration are used.Active exercise can make the temperature of multifidus and erector spinae muscles higher.Different ways of recovery have no significant influence on fatigue perceptions.Conclusion Active exercise is the best way to recover from muscle fatigue, especially has positive effect on maintaining body temperature.Short term electrical stimulation and mechanical vibration have no effects on recovery of muscle strength, but influence muscle fiber recruitment and threshold, thus they may accelerate muscle fatigue.

Abstract:Background: The effect of stimulation with different vibration frequencies on delayed muscle soreness (DOMS) has not yet been determined. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of medium- and high-frequency vertical vibration stimulation on DOMS in track and field athletes. Methods: A total of 38 elite men's track and field athletes were recruited during the off-season. Through the digital randomization method, the participants were divided into three groups. Two-knee DOMS modeling was performed on the medium-frequency group (MFG, 25 Hz, n = 13), high-frequency group (HFG, 50 Hz, n = 12) and control group (CG, 0 Hz, n = 13). The three groups were matched in age, height and body mass. Vertical vibration stimulation was performed for 10 min on the MFG and HFG. Visual analog score (VAS); interleukin-6 (IL-6), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatine kinase (CK) levels and knee extension peak torque (PT) were determined immediately and at 24, 48, and 72 h after vibration. Results: The 48 and 72 h VASs of the HFG were lower than those of the MFG and CG. The immediate and 24 and 48 h IL-6 concentrations in the HFG were lower than those in the CG. The 24 h IL-6 concentration in the HFG was lower than that in the MFG and that in the MFG was lower than that in the CG. LDH concentrations at different time points did not differ amongst groups. Immediate and 24 h CK concentrations were lower in the HFG than in the CG. The immediate and 24, 48, and 72 h knee extensions at 60°/s PT were lower in the HFG than in the CG. The immediate and 24 and 48 h knee extension at 60 °/s PT in the MFG were lower than those in the CG. The 24 h knee extension (240°/s peak torque) value in the HFG was lower than that in the CG. Conclusion: Stimulation with 50 Hz (amplitude of 3 mm) vibration can reduce the muscle pain, IL-6 and CK concentrations and knee extension loss caused by DOMS. However, stimulation with 25 Hz (amplitude of 3 mm) vibration had poor effects. Results suggested that high-frequency vibration training is an effective strategy for relieving DOMS after intensive training.

The Effect of Vibration Massage on Fatigue of the Upper Trapezius Muscle during Different Tasks

Abstract:Background: Vibratory massage is now widely used to alleviate muscle fatigue. The effects of different vibration massage intensities on left and right upper trapezius (UT) fatigue have not been examined. Therefore, the present study first examined whether a vibration massage intervention had an effect on UT muscles and second compared the effects of 2 different levels (36 Hz and 46 Hz) of vibratory massage on the right and left oblique muscles under 3 different fatigue conditions. Methods: A total of 23 participants (12 female, 11 male; age: 26.5 ± 3.9 year, height: 170.5 ± 1.6 cm, mass: 57.5 ± 1.5 kg, BMI: 24.3 ± 1.6 kg/m2) were randomly divided into intervention and control groups. The 2 groups of subjects completed isometric contraction fatigue tasks of 30 s of fatigue, 60 s of fatigue and 90 s of fatigue in turn. The specific task of isotonic contraction was performed by subjects holding a 1 kg dumbbell in each hand and performing a straight arm weighted lateral supination exercise. After each exercise, the intervention group was randomized to apply a massage device with a vibration intensity of 36 Hz or 46 Hz on the left and right UT muscles for 5 min each. The control group did not receive any treatment. Both groups then repeated the same fatigue task as before. Then, the effects of different vibration massage interventions on UT muscles were derived by analyzing the changes in maximal voluntary contraction percentage (MVC%) of surface electromyography (sEMG) signals before and after the intervention, and the most effective vibration massage program for relieving left and right UT fatigue was summarized. Then, four classification algorithms were used to label and classify the collected sEMG data, and finally a UT muscle fatigue identification and vibration massage model was constructed. Results: After using the vibration massage level 1 (36 Hz) intervention, the MVC% of the right UT muscle showed significant reductions in the 30 s fatigue task, the 60 s fatigue task and the 90 s fatigue task (R1: p = 0.022, R2: p = 0.005, R3: p = 0.049). After using the vibration massage level 3 (46 Hz) intervention, the MVC% of the right UT muscle showed a significant decrease in both the 60 s fatigue task and the 90 s fatigue task (R2: p = 0.033, R3: p = 0.028). Significant decreases in MVC% for the left UT muscle were found only in the 90 s fatigue task (L3: p = 0.040). Then, by comparing the different performances of four commonly used classification algorithms, it was found that the bagging (accuracy = 0.860) algorithm had higher accuracy. Therefore, the bagging algorithm was used for the UT fatigue identification and vibration massage models. Conclusions: This was the first study to show the impacts of different levels of vibration massage on fatigue alleviation in the left and right UT muscles. Furthermore, the bilateral UT fatigue identification and vibration massage model developed in this study can help people to choose the most appropriate massage protocol for quick relief and relaxation of the UT muscles under three different fatigue tasks.
Effectiveness and electrophysiological mechanisms of focal vibration on upper limb motor dysfunction in patients with subacute stroke: A randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Upper limb motor dysfunction is a common complication after stroke, which has a negative impact on the daily life of the patients. Focal vibration (FV) has been used to improve upper limb motor function in acute and chronic stroke patients, but its application in subacute stroke patients has not been extensively explored. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the therapeutic effect of FV on upper limb motor function in subacute stroke patients and its underlying electrophysiological mechanism. Twenty-nine patients were enrolled and randomized into two groups: a control group and a vibration group. The control group were treated with conventional therapy including passive and active physical activity training, standing and sitting balance exercises, muscle strength training, hand extension and grasping exercises. The vibration group were given conventional rehabilitation and vibration therapy. A deep muscle stimulator (DMS) with a frequency of 60 Hz and an amplitude of 6 mm was used to provide vibration stimulation, which was sequentially applied along the biceps muscle to the flexor radialis of the affected limb for 10 min, once a day, and 6 times a week. Both groups received treatments for 4 consecutive weeks. In the vibration group, the motor evoked potential (MEP) latency and the somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) latency were significantly shortened (P < 0.05) immediately and 30 min after vibration; the SEP amplitude and MEP amplitude were significantly increased (P < 0.05) immediately and 30 min after vibration. The MEP latency (P = 0.001) and SEP N20 latency (P = 0.001) were shortened, and the MEP amplitude (P = 0.011) and SEP N20 amplitude (P = 0.017) were significantly increased after 4 weeks in the vibration group. After 4 consecutive weeks, the vibration group showed significant improvements in Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) (P = 0.037), Brunnstrom stage for upper extremity (BS-UE) (P = 0.020), Fugl-Meyer assessment for upper extremity (FMA-UE) (P = 0.029), Modified Barthel Index (MBI) (P = 0.024), and SEP N20 (P = 0.046) compared to the control group. The Brunnstrom stage for hand (BS-H) (P = 0.451) did not show significant differences between the two groups. This study showed that FV was effective in improving upper limb motor function in subacute stroke patients. The underlying mechanism of FV may be that it enhances the efficacy of sensory pathways and induces plastic changes in the sensorimotor cortex.

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to assess and grade muscle fatigue, and then reveal the different recovery effects of the three methods of natural recovery, electrical stimulation of acupoints, and electrical stimulation of non-acupoints based on the classification and changes in characteristics. Muscle fatigue mainly refers to the weakness of muscles and the weakening of working ability after long-term or high-intensity use. It is a problem that people often encounter in daily life. In this study, 20 subjects participated in the study. By collecting surface EMG signals, and then extracting time-domain features and frequency-domain features, three algorithms of KNN, LR, and SVM were used to classify muscle fatigue into three categories: good, transitional fatigue, fatigue. The average accuracy of KNN algorithm reached 83.2%, the average accuracy of LR reached 84.7%, and the average accuracy of SVM reached 88.6%. Afterwards, the SVM classifier was used to evaluate the subsequent three recovery effects. The experiment found that electrical stimulation of acupuncture points has a better recovery effect than natural recovery and electrical stimulation of non-acupuncture points, and has a more active recovery promotion effect.
Effect of Weight Bearing Vibration Stimulation on Surface Myoelectric Activation of Lower Limb Muscle Groups

Abstract:This paper aims to find the optimal vibration frequency and weight bearing of vibration stimulation. Methods: (1) Half squat, no weight bearing, 30% body weight, and 50% body weight, vibration frequencies 0 Hz, 30 Hz, 40 Hz, and 50 Hz; (2) Seven muscles: rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, and medial and lateral gastrocnemius. The results show that no weight bearing vibration was a significant change in the activation of the tibialis anterior and medial gastrocnemius muscles. 30% weight bearing activated the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, and gastrocnemius medialis more significantly. 50% weight bearing and 40 Hz vibration had the most significant activation of the medial peroneal muscle. 30% weight bearing and 40 Hz vibration stimulated vastus medialis, biceps femoris, and lateral activation was better. 50 Hz vibration stimulation and 30% weight bearing activated the vastus medialis, biceps femoris better. Conclusion: (1) the activation of lower limb muscle groups tends to increase under weight bearing vibration conditions, especially in the quadriceps femoris muscle, and the vibration frequency is better at about 40 Hz. (2) under the stimulation conditions of changing vibration frequency, small load weight bearing had better activation of lower limb muscles at low vibration frequency, and large load weight bearing had better activation of lower limb muscles with increasing vibration frequency

Abstract:Background: Physiological exercise-induced fatigue is a potential risk factor to human body in motion which can restrict the effectiveness of training and resulting muscle and joint strain. Both ancient texts and modern clinical reports have shown that moxibustion at CV8 alleviates exercise-induced fatigue. However, the pathophysiological mechanism of action is still unclear. Objective: To investigate the effect of moxibustion on mitochondrial energy metabolism in skeletal muscle of fatigued rats. Materials and Methods: In this study, rats treated with moxibustion for 8 weeks to assess its efficacy in enhancing energy metabolism in skeletal muscle. Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), prohibitin-1 (PHB1), FoF1-ATPase and mitochondrial morphology of the biceps femoris were analyzed to explore evidence of moxibustion in long-term exercise. Results: Our research indicated that moxibustion could reduce the levels of biceps MDH, PHB1 and FoF1-ATPase in fatigued rats, and increased SDH and ATP levels. The electron microscopy showed that the mitochondrial morphology in the untreated and non-acupoint groups swollen, the cristae either decreased or fractured, but the degree of CV8 group was significantly lower than the other two groups. Conclusions: Moxibustion at CV8 relieves motor fatigue by regulating the energy metabolism of skeletal muscle and is a safe and effective non-drug treatment.

Abstract:Background Acupuncture as a traditional Chinese medicine therapy relies on unique theories to alleviate fatigue. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of acupuncture on exercise‐induced fatigue utilizing transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Methods A total of 20 participants with regular exercise habits were recruited for this study. Abstract:Vibration exercise (VE) has shown promising results for improving muscle strength and power performance when superimposed on high-level muscle contraction. However, low-level contraction may be more preferable in many rehabilitation programs due to the weakness of the patients. Unfortunately, the effects and underlying physiological mechanisms of VE superimposed on low-level contraction are unclear. This study aims to investigate the fatiguing effects and motor unit (MU) firing patterns during VE with low-level muscle contraction. Twenty-one healthy participants performed 60-s isometric contraction of the upper limb under a baseline force at maximum voluntary contraction and superimposed vibration with an amplitude of baseline and different frequencies at 0 Hz (control), 15, 25, 35, and 45 Hz. High-density surface electromyography (EMG) was recorded on the biceps brachii. The decay in muscle fiber conduction velocity, calculated in 3-s sliding windows, was employed as an indicator of myoelectric fatigue. MU firing patterns were obtained by decomposing the high-density EMG into MU spike trains. VE, particularly at 25 Hz, produces increased myoelectric fatigue as compared to the control condition. Besides, synchronized MU discharges are observed at the vibration frequency for 15- and 25-Hz VE and the sub-harmonics for 35- and 45-Hz VE. Furthermore, VE-induced increase in MU synchronization (as compared to control) seems to decrease with myoelectric fatigue. Significance: Our findings suggest that VE may be a suitable modality for rehabilitation programs, providing useful insights for subscribing appropriate VE training protocols.

Does vibration benefit delayed-onset muscle soreness?: a meta-analysis and systematic review.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a symptom of exercise-induced muscle injury that is commonly encountered in athletes and fitness enthusiasts. Vibration is being increasingly used to prevent or treat DOMS. We therefore carried out a meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of vibration in patients with DOMS. METHOD:We searched nine databases for randomized controlled trials of vibration in DOMS, from the earliest date available to 30 May 2018. Visual analogue scale (VAS) and creatine kinase (CK) levels were set as outcome measures. RESULTS:The review included 10 identified studies with 258 participants. The meta-analysis indicated that vibration significantly improved the VAS at 24, 48, and 72 hours after exercise, and significantly improved CK levels at 24 and 48 hours, but not at 72 hours. CONCLUSION:Vibration is a beneficial and useful form of physiotherapy for alleviating DOMS. However, further studies are needed to clarify the role and mechanism of vibration in DOMS.
Effect of Moxibustion at Shénquè ( CV 8) on Anti-Exercise-induced Fatigue in Exhaustive Rats in Varying Degrees

Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of moxibustion at Shenque (CV 8) on the anti-exercise-induced fatigue in rats after exhaustive exercise in varying degrees. Methods Seventy-two SD rats were randomly divided into 3 groups according to the random number table method, including blank group, model group and moxibustion group. The model group and moxibustion group were divided into 4 subgroups respectively, that was 1 time, 4 times, 7 times and 10 times subgroup. There were 9 groups with 8 rats in each group. Except blank group, all the rats were established into exhaustive models through swimming. Mild moxibustion at CV 8 was carried out for 15 min in the rats in moxibustion group aft er modeling for once every other day. The concentration of serum glucose (GLU), malonaldehyde (MDA) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) as well as the activity of aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT) and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH)were detected 24h after the exhaustive exercise by adopting full-automatic analyzer. Results The exhaustive time of rats were long at first but shorter later. The exhaustive time of rats in the model group (4 times) were obviously longer than that in the model group (1 time) (P<0.01), the exhaustive time of rats in the model group (7 times) and model group (10 times) were obviously shorter than that in the model group (1 time) (P<0.01), and the exhaustive time of rats in the moxibustion group (7 times) and moxibustion group (10 times) were obviously longer than that in the model group with the same number of times (P<0.01), the serum GLU level of rats in the model group (7 times) and model group (10 times) increased when compared with the blank group (P<0.01), and the serum MDA and BNU levels as well as the activity of AST, ALT and LDH of rats in the model group (4 times), model group (7 times) and model group (10 times) increased when compared with the blank group (P<0.05 or P<0.01), the serum GLU, MDA and BNU levels as well as the activity of AST and ALT of rats in the moxibustion group (7 times) and moxibustion group (10 times) reduced when compared with the model group with the same number of times (P<0.05 or P<0.01), and the serum LDH activity of rats in the moxibustion group (4 times), moxibustion group (7 times) and moxibustion group (10 times) reduced when compared with the model group with the same number of times (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Conclusion Moxibustion at CV 8 can reduce the serum MDA and BNU levels as well as the activity of AST, ALT and LDH of organism in a status of long-term fatigue, effectively improve the symptom of long-term fatigue, providing a certain experimental basis for the clinical application of moxibustion at CV 8 in the process of anti-exercise-induced fatigue in the future.

Abstract:Introduction: Beneficial effects have been observed for mechanical vibration stimulation (MVS), which are mainly attributed to tonic vibration reflex (TVR). TVR is reported to elicit synchronized motor unit activation during locally applied vibration. Similar effects are also observed in a novel vibration system referred to as functional force stimulation (FFS). However, the manifestation of TVR in FFS is doubted due to the use of global electromyography (EMG) features in previous analysis. Our study aims to investigate the effects of FFS on motor unit discharge patterns of the human biceps brachii by analyzing the motor unit spike trains decoded from the high-density surface EMG. Methods: Eighteen healthy subjects volunteered in FFS training with different amplitudes and frequencies. One hundred and twenty-eight channel surface EMG was recorded from the biceps brachii and then decoded after motion-artifact removal. The discharge timings were extracted and the coherence between different motor unit spike trains was calculated to quantify synchronized activation. Results and discussion: Significant synchronization within the vibration cycle and/or its integer multiples is observed for all FFS trials, which increases with increased FFS amplitude. Our results reveal the basic physiological mechanism involved in FFS, providing a theoretical foundation for analyzing and introducing FFS into clinical rehabilitation programs.

Abstract:ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of moxibustion at Shenque (CV 8) on fatigue in rats with chronic exercise-induced exhaustion.MethodsThirty male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into a blank group, a model group and a moxibustion group, 10 rats in each group. Except rats in the blank group, the remaining rats were subjected to create long-term exhaustion models by repeated swimming. After successful modeling, rats in the moxibustion group received mild moxibustion at Shenque (CV 8) for 15 min, once every other day with a total of 10 times. Rats in the model group and the blank group did not receive moxibustion. At the end of the treatment, the exhausted times, and the body weight of rats before and after the experiment were compared among groups. The levels of blood malondialdehyde (MDA) and urea nitrogen (BUN), as well as the activities of aspartate transarninase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were also measured by the automatic biochemical analyzer, 24 h after the exhausting excise.ResultsThe 10th swimming time was significantly longer in the moxibustion group than that in the model group (P<0.01). The increase rate of the body weight was lower in the rats of the moxibustion group than that in the model group before the 7th and the 10th exhausting excise (P<0.05, P<0.01). The levels of serum MDA and BUN, as well as the activities of AST, ALT and LDH in the model group were higher than those in the blank group (all P<0.01). The levels of serum MDA and BUN, as well as the activities of AST, ALT and LDH in the moxibustion group were lower than those in the model group (P<0.01).ConclusionMoxibustion at Shenque (CV 8) can decrease the serum levels of MDA and BUN, as well as activities of AST, ALT and LDH in the long-term fatigue rats, thus to improve the symptoms of fatigue.

Using nonlinear dynamics analysis to evaluate time response of cupping therapy with different intervention timings on reducing muscle fatigue

Abstract:Background: Cupping therapy has been indicated effective in reducing muscle fatigue after 24 h based on the spectral analyses of surface electromyography (sEMG). However, there is no sufficient evidence showing changes of sEMG nonlinear indexes at more time points after cupping therapy. Furthermore, it is unclear whether the intervention timings of cupping therapy affect the recovery from muscle fatigue. The purpose of this study was to use the sEMG nonlinear analysis to assess the difference of time response of cupping therapy between different intervention timings after muscle fatigue. Materials and methods: This randomized controlled trial recruited 26 healthy volunteers. Cupping therapy (-300 mmHg pressure for 5 min by the 45 mm-diameter cup) was applied before (i.e., pre-condition) or after (i.e., post-condition) muscle fatigue induced by performing repeated biceps curls at 75% of the 10 repetitions of maximum (RM) on the non-dominant upper extremity. Subjects were randomly allocated to the pre-condition group or the post-condition group. The sEMG signals during the maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVC) of the biceps were recorded at four time points (i.e., baseline; post 1: immediate after cupping-fatigue/fatigue-cupping interventions; post 2: 3 h after cupping-fatigue/fatigue-cupping interventions; post 3: 6 h after cupping-fatigue/fatigue-cupping interventions). Two nonlinear sEMG indexes (sample entropy, SampEn; and percent determinism based on recurrence quantification analysis, %DET) were used to evaluate the recovery from exercise-introduced muscle fatigue. The Friedman test followed by the Nemenyi test and the Mann-Whitney U test were applied in statistics. Results: The SampEn and %DET change rate did not show any significant differences at four time points in the pre-condition group. However, there were significant delayed effects instead of immediate effects on improving muscle fatigue in the post-condition group (SampEn change rate: baseline 0.0000 ± 0.0000 vs. post 2 0.1105 ± 0.2253, p < 0.05; baseline 0.0000 ± 0.0000 vs. post 3 0.0627 ± 0.4665, p < 0.05; post 1-0.0321 ± 0.2668 vs. post 3 0.0627 ± 0.4665, p < 0.05; and %DET change rate: baseline 0.0000 ± 0.0000 vs. post 2-0.1240 ± 0.1357, p < 0.01; baseline 0.0000 ± 0.0000 vs. post 3 0.0704 ± 0.6495, p < 0.05; post 1 0.0700 ± 0.3819 vs. post 3 0.0704 ± 0.6495, p < 0.05). Moreover, the SampEn change rate of the post-condition group (0.1105 ± 0.2253) was significantly higher than that of the pre-condition group (0.0006 ± 0.0634, p < 0.05) at the post 2 time point. No more significant between-groups difference was found in this study. Conclusion: This is the first study demonstrating that both the pre-condition and post-condition of cupping therapy are useful for reducing muscle fatigue. The post-condition cupping therapy can e ffectively alleviate exercise-induced muscle fatigue and there is a significant delayed effect, especially 3 h after the interventions. Although the pre-condition cupping therapy can not significantly enhance muscle manifestations, it can recover muscles into a non-fatigued state.
Electromyographic assessment of muscle fatigue during isometric vibration training at varying frequencies

Abstract:Resistance exercise is essential to improve or maintain muscle performance. Vibration training has been suggested as an alternative option for muscle conditioning, aiming especially at improving muscle strength and power. Several studies link the effects of vibration training to enhanced neuromuscular stimulation, measured by electromyography (EMG) and typically ascribed to involuntary reflex mechanisms. However, the underlying mechanisms are still unclear, limiting the use of vibration training. This paper proposes additional methods to analyze the mechanisms involved in vibration training. A dedicated measurement setup was realized to relate vibration parameters to muscle fatigue in the biceps brachii. Fatigue is estimated by EMG mean frequency and conduction velocity assessments as well as by maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) force measurements. A modified maximum likelihood algorithm is proposed for the conduction velocity estimation based on high-density EMG recording. Five volunteers performed four isometric contractions of 50 s at 80% MVC with no vibration (control) and with superimposed vibration at 20, 30, and 40 Hz. Fatigue was estimated from the decay of force, EMG mean frequency, and EMG conduction velocity. 30-Hz vibrations represented the most fatiguing stimulus. Our preliminary results also show a better correlation between force and conduction velocity decay than between force and mean frequency decay, indicating the former as a better EMG indicator of fatigue. The proposed methods provide important advancements for the analysis of vibration exercise and guidance towards the definition of optimal training protocols.
Acute Effects of Vibration Foam Rolling with Light and Moderate Pressure on Blood Pressure and Senior Fitness Test in Older Women

Abstract:Vibration foam rolling (VR) can improve flexibility and sports performance. However, blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and senior fitness test (SFT) responses induced by an acute VR session in older women are currently unknown. Fifteen healthy women (72.90 ± 4.32 years) completed three separated randomly sequenced experimental visits. During each visit, they started with a warm-up protocol (general warm up (GW): walking + static stretching (SS), SS + VR with light pressure (VRL), or SS + VR with moderate pressure (VRM)), and completed BP, HR, SFT measurements. The systolic BP increased significantly after all three warm up protocols (p < 0.05). Both VRL and VRM protocols induced statistically significant improvements (effect size range: 0.3–1.04, p < 0.05) in the senior fitness test (back scratch, 30 s chair stand, 30 s arm curl, and 8 foot up and go), as compared to the GW. In addition, the VRM showed greater improvement for the 2 min step test when comparing with the VRL. Therefore, including VR in a warm-up protocol can result in superior SFT performance enhancement than the GW does in healthy older women.

Abstract:Background: Fatigue is the most common symptom in head and neck cancer patients who receive concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). However, evidence of the effects of acupoint interventions on fatigue and heart rate variability in these patients is unclear. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of an acupoint intervention on fatigue and heart rate variability in head and neck cancer patients receiving CCRT. Methods: This randomized controlled trail applied repeated measures, and used permuted block randomization to randomly assign the participants into the acupoint and control groups. Participants in both groups received usual care. In addition, participants in the acupoint group received transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation and auricular acupressure for a period of six weeks. Data were collected using the brief fatigue inventory and a heart rate variability device at baseline and during the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th weeks of the study. Results: The generalized estimating equation analysis found a significant group-by-time interaction for fatigue on the 6th week of acupoint stimulation (p = .036). No significant differences in group-by-time interaction were found for the standard deviation of normal to normal intervals (SDNN), low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF), or LF/HF ratio (p > .05). Conclusions / implications for practice: This study supports the accessibility and feasibility of the acupoint intervention. No adverse effects were observed. The six-week transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation and auricular acupressure may be used to improve fatigue in head and neck cancer patients currently receiving CCRT.
