Abstract:Whistler waves generated in fast magnetic reconnection processes of collisionless high beta plasmas are reviewed in experiments and satellite observations, as well as in theory and simulation, and further studied in the two-fluid theory. It is found that low frequency whistler waves can be excited in the ion inertial range of the reconnection region. The wave is found right-handed polarized with a quadrupolar out-of-plane magnetic perturbation, in accord with satellite observations in the geomagnetosphere.

Abstract:Whistler waves are a type of low-frequency electromagnetic wave common in nature, which is usually associated with energetic electron phenomena. This study presents experimental observations of low-frequency whistler wave instabilities driven by energetic electrons through wave–particle interactions on EXL-50. The energetic electrons are generated by electron cyclotron waves (ECWs) through stochastic heating [Wang et al., J. Plasma Phys. 89, 905890603 (2023)] and do not match the characteristics of the runaway electrons [Shi et al., Nucl. Fusion 62, 086047 (2022)]. In the steady-state plasma of the Energy iNNovation XuanLong-50 (EXL-50), whistler waves within the 30–120 MHz frequency range were observed during electron cyclotron resonance heating. These waves displayed multiple frequency bands, and the frequencies of waves were directly proportional to the Alfvén velocity. Furthermore, it was interesting to find that superposition of lower hybrid wave into ECW resulted in the suppression of these whistler waves. The experimental results may indicate that the whistler waves are driven by energetic electrons (excluding runaway electrons). These discoveries carry significant implications for several areas of research, including the investigation of wave–particle interactions, the development of radio frequency wave current drivers, their potential impact on the electron dynamics in future fusion devices, and even the presence of unusually low-frequency whistler waves in Earth's radiation belts.

Abstract:Utilizing the 2.5D Particle-in-Cell (PIC) method, we observe that large-amplitude whistler waves are present near the separatrix on the magnetospheric side and in the outflow region during asymmetric magnetic reconnection. Minimum variance analyses confirm their quasi-parallel and anti-parallel propagation to the background magnetic field, respectively, and their accuracy is validated through parallel Poynting fluxes ( S ∥ ). The excited whistler waves have intermittent property due to the evolution and movement of the reconnection layer. Wave-Particle Interaction Analysis (WPIA) reveals a pronounced energy conversion between the waves and electrons. Our simulation results demonstrate that whistler waves near the separatrix are excited by the cyclotron resonance duo to the instability of electron beam by analyzing the electron velocity distribution functions (VDFs). Meanwhile, the electrostatic oscillation is generated by the positive parallel drift of electron beam. However, the whistler waves in the outflow region are excited by the Landau resonance duo to anisotropic instability distributions of electron beam-mode.

Abstract:A variety of plasma waves have been observed in the separatrix region during magnetic reconnection, and their roles on reconnection and exciting mechanisms are still controversial. In this paper, we report the whistler wave with a very narrow frequency band just above half of the electron cyclotron frequency in the separatrix region. This whistler wave is accompanied with the electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves. The ECH waves have frequencies between the first and fifth harmonic of electron cyclotron frequency fce. The wave normal angle of the whistler waves is similar to 20 degrees-similar to 40 degrees, meaning the quasi-parallel propagation, while the ECH waves propagate perpendicular to the background magnetic field with theta similar to 87 degrees +/- 2 degrees. In the separatrix region, the electrons have a loss-cone distribution while these two kinds of waves are observed. Based on the linear theory, such an electron distribution is unstable for both whistler waves and ECH waves. It indicates that these two kinds of waves are generated by the electron loss-cone instability.

Abstract:The role of whistler-mode waves in the solar wind and the relationship between their electromagnetic fields and charged particles is a fundamental question in space physics. Using high-temporal-resolution electromagnetic field and plasma data from the Magnetospheric MultiScale spacecraft, we report observations of low-frequency whistler waves and associated electromagnetic fields and particle behavior in the Earth's foreshock. The frequency of these whistler waves is close to half the lower-hybrid frequency (similar to 2 Hz), with their wavelength close to the ion gyroradius. The electron bulk flows are strongly modulated by these waves, with a modulation amplitude comparable to the solar wind velocity. At such a spatial scale, the electron flows are forcibly separated from the ion flows by the waves, resulting in strong electric currents and anisotropic ion distributions. Furthermore, we find that the low-frequency whistler wave propagates obliquely to the background magnetic field ( B (0)), and results in spatially periodic magnetic gradients in the direction parallel to B (0). Under such conditions, large pitch-angle electrons are trapped in wave magnetic valleys by the magnetic mirror force, and may provide free perpendicular electron energy to excite higher-frequency whistler waves. This study offers important clues and new insights into wave-particle interactions, wave generation, and microscale energy conversion processes in the solar wind.

Abstract:It is shown by multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations that intense secondary whistler waves with special vortexlike field topology can be excited by a relativistic laser pulse in the highly magnetized, near-critical density plasma. Such whistler waves with lower frequencies obliquely propagate on both sides of the laser propagation axis. The energy conversion rate from laser to whistler waves can exceed 15%. Their dispersion relations and field polarization properties can be well explained by the linear cold-plasma model. The present work presents a new excitation mechanism of whistler modes extending to the relativistic regime and could also be applied in magnetically assisted fast ignition.

Abstract:A 2(1)/(2)-dimensional electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation code is used to investigate the wave phenomena in the plasma sheet of collisionless magnetic reconnection. The results show that these waves have the following characteristics: they are right-hand circularity polarized, with propagation direction nearly parallel to local magnetic field, and frequency between 0.07 and 0.17 times of local electron cyclotron frequency. Therefore we conclude that such waves are Whistler waves, and their possible excitation mechanisms are also discussed.

Abstract:We investigate electrostatic waves in a magnetopause reconnection event around a secondary electron diffusion region. Near the current sheet mid‐plane, parallel electron beam‐mode waves are modulated by whistler waves. We conclude that the anisotropy of energized electrons in the reconnection exhaust excites whistler waves, which produce spatially modulated electron beams through nonlinear Landau resonance, and these beams excite beam‐mode electrostatic waves. In the separatrix region, parallel propagating electrostatic waves associated with field‐aligned electron beams and perpendicular propagating electron cyclotron harmonic waves with loss cone distributions exhibit modulation frequencies in the lower‐hybrid wave (LHW) frequency range. We infer that LHWs scatter electrons to produce beams and alter loss cones to modulate electrostatic waves. The results advance our understanding about the regimes and mechanisms of electrostatic waves in reconnection, with an emphasis on their coupling with lower‐frequency electromagnetic waves.

Abstract:Abstract The whistler-mode wave extending from the fast-magnetosonic wave branch is a fundamental perturbation of electromagnetic fields and plasmas in various environments including planetary space, laboratory, and astrophysics. The origin and evolution of the waves is a long-standing question due to the limited instrumental capability in resolving highly variable plasma and electromagnetic fields. Here, we analyze observational data with a high time resolution from the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft in front of the terrestrial bow shock (e.g., foreshock). We develop a novel approach to extract the three-dimensional fluctuating electron velocity distributions (δf e( V )) from their background (f e0( V )), and have successfully captured the coherent resonance between fluctuating electrons (δf e( V )) and wavelike electromagnetic fields (δ B , δ E ) at an unprecedentedly high frequency (>1 Hz) for investigating wave–particle interactions. We provide that the unstable whistler wave grows rapidly over a timescale that is much shorter than the proton gyro-period. Regarding the energy origin for the waves, we find the ion distributions consisting of the solar wind ion flows and the ion beams reflected from the shock play crucial roles in providing the free energy and determining the eigenmode disturbances of fields and electrons. The quantification of wave growth rate and the characterization of wave–particle interactions for the instability driver can significantly advance the understandings of wave evolution and energy conversion between multisource multispecies particles and wave electromagnetic fields.

Low-frequency Waves in Magnetic Reconnection

Abstract:The characteristics of low-frequency waves in magnetic reconnection are studied using two-dimensional hybrid simulation code. In a coordinate system moving with fluid, the time series of a magnetic field perpendicular to the magnetic reconnection plane, B y , is transformed into the power spectrum via fast Fourier transformation, while the wave propagation direction and polarization are determined by minimum variance analysis of the electric field. The results show that low-frequency Alfvén ion-cyclotron waves dominate the reconnection area. These waves have frequencies 0–1Ωp (where Ωp is the local proton gyro frequency) and all are left-handed circularly polarized. Among these waves, large-amplitude turbulence, with frequencies of 0–0.6Ωp and isotropic propagation, dominates the outflow regions. This can cause the reversal of B y in the quadrupole structure. In the inflow regions, dominant waves, propagating mainly parallel to the ambient magnetic field, have higher frequencies and smaller amplitudes. The frequency of the main peak of wave energy is usually higher than 0.5Ωp.

Abstract:Based on Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms waveform data, Gao, Lu, et al. (2016) have reported two special multiband chorus events, where upper band waves are located at harmonics of lower band waves. And they proposed a new generation mechanism to explain this multiband chorus wave, named as lower band cascade. With a 1‐D particle‐in‐cell (PIC) simulation model, we have investigated the lower band cascade of whistler waves excited by anisotropic hot electrons. During each simulation, lower band whistler mode waves are firstly excited by the anisotropy of hot electrons. Later, upper band harmonic waves are generated through the nonlinear coupling between the electromagnetic and electrostatic components of lower band waves, which supports the scenario of lower band cascade. Moreover, the peak wave number (or frequency) of lower band waves will continuously drift to smaller values due to the decline of the anisotropy of hot electrons. While the peak wave number of upper band harmonic waves will be kept nearly unchanged, but their amplitude continues to decrease after their saturation. We further find that the magnetic amplitude of upper band harmonic waves tends to increase with the increase of the wave normal angle of lower band waves or the anisotropy of hot electrons. Besides, the amplitude ratio between upper band and lower band waves is positively correlated with the wave normal angle of lower band waves but is anticorrelated with the anisotropy of hot electrons. Our study has provided a more comprehensive understanding of the lower band cascade of whistler waves.

Abstract:Whistler-mode waves play an important role in the inner magnetospheric particle dynamics. The direction and efficiency of energy transfer between waves and particles strongly depend on the wave frequency distribution characteristics. Recent observations have drawn attention to the low-frequency whistler-mode chorus waves below 0.1 times the equatorial gyrofrequency fce of electrons outside the plasmasphere. Here, on the basis of the analysis of the Van Allen Probes wave data, we describe a new type of low-frequency hiss-like whistler-mode wave around or below 0.1 fce. We show that two normal chorus wave bands split by the 0.5 fce gap can produce the low-frequency hiss-like whistler-mode waves through the nonlinear three-wave interaction.
Plasma waves around separatrix in collisionless magnetic reconnection with weak guide field

Abstract:Electrostatic and electromagnetic waves excited by electron beam around the separatrix region are analyzed in detail during the collisionless magnetic reconnection with a weak guide field by using 2-D particle-in-cell simulation with the adaptive mesh refinement. Broadband electrostatic waves are excited both in the inflow and outflow regions around the separatrices due to the electron bump-on-tail, two-stream, and Buneman instabilities. In contrast, the quasi-monochromatic electromagnetic waves are excited only in the inflow side of the separatrices due to a beam-driven whistler instability. The localization of the whistler waves is attributed to the nonuniformity of the out-of-plane magnetic field B-y. The whistler instability is suppressed in the outflow side where B-y is too small for the oblique propagation. The electrostatic waves with distinct speeds can explain the in situ spacecraft observations. From the causality point of view, the waves are generated as the consequence of the electron bulk acceleration to thermalize the particles through wave-particle interactions. These simulation results provide guidance to analyze high-resolution wave observations during reconnection in the ongoing and upcoming satellite missions, as well as in dedicated laboratory experiments.

Abstract:Whistler-mode waves can modulate the electron distributions through wave-particle interactions in the Earth's inner magnetosphere. In this paper, we have investigated the effects of the whistler waves on the electron distributions by a combination of EMHD and test-particle simulations. Our simulations show a parallel whistler wave becomes gradually oblique during its propagation from the magnetic equator to higher latitudes. Such a whistler wave causes distinct flux increases of tens of keV electrons at large pitch angles to form electron butterfly distributions. This whistler wave traps numerous resonant electrons and transports them from lower latitudes to higher latitudes through nonlinear Landau trapping. Meanwhile, these trapped electrons are efficiently accelerated to higher energies contributing to the rapid formation of electron butterfly distributions at higher latitudes. Our study suggests nonlinear Landau trapping is a potential formation mechanism of the electron butterfly distributions observed in the Earth's inner magnetosphere.
