Abstract:Abstract: Calcium release units (CRUs) are constituted of specialized junctional domains of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (jSR) that bear calcium release channels, also called ryanodine receptors (RyRs). In cardiac muscle, CRUs come in three subtypes that differ in geometry, but have common molecular components. Peripheral couplings are formed by a junction of the jSR with the plasmalemma; dyads occur where the jSR is associated with transverse (T)‐tubules; corbular SR is a jSR domain that is located within the cells and bears RyRs but does not associate with either plasmalemma or T‐tubules. Using transmission electron microscopy, this study followed the formation of CRUs and their accrual of four components: the L‐type channel dihydropyridine receptors (DHPRs) of plasmalemma/T‐tubules; the RyRs of jSR; triadin (Tr) and junctin (JnC), two homologous components of the jSR membrane; and calsequestrin (CSQ), the internal calcium binding proteins. During differentiation, peripheral couplings are formed first and the others follow. RyRs and DHPRs are targeted to subdomains of the CRUs that face each other and are acquired in a concerted manner. Overexpressions of either junction (JnC or Tr) and of CSQ, singly or in conjunction, shed light on the specific role of JnC in the structural development, organization, and maintenance of jSR cisternae and on the independent synthetic pathways and targeting of JnC and CSQ. In addition, the structural cues provided by the overexpression models allow us to define sequential steps in the synthetic pathway for JnC and CSQ and their targeting to the CRUs of differentiating myocardium.
Effect of 2% chlorhexidine on resin bond strength and mode of failure using two different adhesives on dentin: An in vitro study

Abstract:Aim: To evaluate the shear bond strength and failure mode of total-etch and self-etch bonding agents on human dentin with and without application of 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX). Materials and Methods: Eighty extracted premolars were chosen and stored in 10% formalin until use. Samples were mounted in cold cure acrylic resin and the occlusal enamel perpendicular to long axis of each tooth was removed using a low-speed diamond saw under water coolant. The prepared teeth were randomly divided into four groups of 20 samples each according to the adhesive system used. Groups 1 and 2 were the control group in which total-etch and self-etch adhesives were applied as per manufacturer's instructions, Groups 3 and 4 were the experimental groups in which 2% CHX was applied and blot dried prior to the application of total-etch and self-etch adhesives. A custom-designed rig was fabricated to place composite on samples. The customized rig comprised a cylindrical mold with height of 3mm and internal diameter of 2.5mm. Resin was placed in increments of 1mm and was cured after each increments. After the composite placements, samples were placed in distilled water at 37°C for 24h. The samples were then thermocycled between 5°C and 55°C in water with a dwell time of 30s in each temperature to a total of 10,000 cycles. The shear test was performed using universal testing machine and fracture modes were evaluated using stereomicroscope. Results: Both the experimental total-etch and self-etch groups showed better shear bond strength than the control groups, which was statistically significant, and also the least mode of failure at the adhesive interface was observed in both the experimental groups. Conclusion: 2% Chlorhexidine gluconate effectively improved the shear bond strength and helped maintaining the durability of adhesive interface in both total-etch and self-etch adhesives.

In the orthodontic context, however, there have been debatable results in the published literature as to how significantly the use of primer affects the bond strength between the bracket and the tooth surface. Aims: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the shear bond strength of two commercially available direct bonding systems with and without using liquid primer and to record their adhesive remnant index scores. Settings and Design: A total of 100 natural human teeth, extracted for orthodontic therapies, had been selected as specimens for the study. They were equally divided into four categories. Two commercially available products were used to bond metallic orthodontic brackets to the teeth, both with the use of and without the use of a primer to test the shear bond strengths of the four types of adhesive-tooth complexes created. Shear bond strength was measured using universal testing machine, and Student’s t-test was applied for the comparison of the results. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 extracted human premolar teeth were divided into two groups: Group I and Group II, each of which contained two subgroups (with one subgroup pretreated with a primer and the other, not pretreated with the primer). All the teeth were divided equally among the subgroups and were mounted on color-coded acrylic blocks to aid in identification. Group I was bonded with Transbond XT Light Cure Adhesive (3M Unitek Orthodontic Products, Monrovia, California) and Group II was bonded using Phase II two-paste system (Reliance Orthodontic Products, Itasca, Illinois). The shear bond strength of Transbond XT Light Cure Adhesive used with Transbond XT primer and Phase II orthodontic two-paste system used with liquid primer was compared with that of those used without a liquid primer, respectively. The shear bond strength was evaluated using universal testing machine and the adhesive remnant scores were evaluated subsequently. The Student’s t-test was applied for comparison of the two groups. Statistical Analysis: Descriptive statistics, such as mean, standard deviation, and a standard error, were calculated for Transbond XT used with and without primer and for Phase II two-paste system used with and without a liquid resin. The Student’s t-test was applied for comparison of the two groups. Results: In Group I, the mean bond strength of Transbond XT without primer (12.5272MPa, 95% CI: 11.76–13.68) was compared to that of Transbond XT with XT primer (13.2028MPa, 95% CI: 12.39–14.06). In Group II, the mean shear bond strength of Phase II two-paste system without primer (10.66MPa, 95% CI: 10.13–11.18) was compared to that of Phase II two-paste system with primer (10.66MPa, 95% CI: 10.13–11.18), and the values were statistically insignificant. Conclusion: The shear bond strength of the brackets bonded with Transbond XT and Phase II without using the liquid primer was sufficient enough to withstand the masticatory forces, which implies the elimination of liquid primer during bonding. Clinical Significance: The development of the acid-etch technique and Bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate-based liquid resin has changed the practice of orthodontics over the years more than any other single principle formulated. Despite its wide popularity, the cytotoxicity, which stems from the use of liquid primer, needs attention.
Optimal Enamel Conditioning Strategy for Rebonding Orthodontic Brackets: a Laboratory Study.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To compare the conventional etching and primer method (CEP) and the self-etching primer method (SEP) in rebonding brackets.METHODS:Forty human maxillary second premolars extracted for orthodontic purpose were randomly divided into 4 equal groups. Group 1 and Group 2 were bonded using the CEP method; Group 3 and Group 4 using the SEP method. All the brackets were debonded and 40 new brackets were rebonded with four different protocols after surface cleaning: Group 1: CEP + adhesive; Group 2: CEP without etch step + adhesive; Group 3: SEP + adhesive; Group 4: non-acidic primer + adhesive. Then, the shear bond strength (SBS) of each group was tested and the measurements of adhesive remnant index scores (ARI) and SEM examination were performed.RESULTS:The mean SBSs for Group 1, 2, 3 and 4 were 14.18, 6.57, 11.90, 5.91 MPa, respectively. Statistical differences of the SBS existed between Group 1 and 2 (P < 0.05) and between Group 3 and 4 (P < 0.05). No difference was found between Group 1 and 3, or Group 2 and 4.CONCLUSION:Omission of the acid-etching step in rebonding orthodontic brackets may be adequate for the clinical requirement. No differences in SBS and ARI of the rebonded brackets were showed between CEP and SEP methods.
Comparison of a recently developed nanofiller self-etching primer adhesive with other self-etching primers and conventional acid etching

Abstract:The purpose of this ex vivo study was to compare the bond strengths and modes of failure of brackets bonded with three self-etching products [Adper Prompt L-Pop (3M Espe), Futurabond NR (Voco) and Transbond Plus (3M Unitek)] and a conventional 38 per cent phosphoric acid-etching system Etch-Rite (Pulpdent Corp.) at two different time points. Ninety-six defect-free premolars were randomly allocated to eight groups (n = 12). The etching procedure was carried out according to the manufacturers' instructions. The shear bond strengths (SBSs) were measured after storage in distilled water for 12 and 24 hours. The brackets were debonded using a universal testing machine with a cross-head speed of 0.5 mm/minute. Multiple comparisons of the SBSs for the different etching types were performed using analysis of variance. The chi-square test was used to evaluate differences in adhesive remnant index (CARI) scores among the groups. The differences between SBSs analysed at 12 and 24 hours were not significantly different. Although a significant difference (P < 0.01) was observed with conventional and self-etching primer (SEP) adhesive systems, SEP revealed bond strengths higher than clinically accepted limits (6-8 MPa). SEP systems can achieve successful orthodontic bond strengths. The rate of development of the bond strength must be determined to ensure sufficient maturation of orthodontic adhesives before functional loading.
In vitro Analysis of Shear Bond Strength and Adhesive Remnant Index of Stainless Steel Brackets with Different Adhesive Systems to Enamel.

Abstract:AIM This study aimed at evaluating and comparing the bond strength of stainless steel brackets bonded with multiple orthodontic adhesives. MATERIALS AND METHODS About 60 premolars extracted to create space during orthodontic treatment were included in the present study. Premolar stainless steel brackets of size 0.022" slot with the surface area of bracket base of 11.15 mm2 were used. The premolars were divided randomly into three groups of 20 in each. Group I: Conventional Acid Etching (Transbond XT); group II: Seventh-generation adhesive materials (Xeno V); and group III: Flowable composite (Filtek Z350 XT). Calculation of Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) was done and shear bond strength was assessed. The probability level of 0.05 was considered as clinically significant. RESULTS The shear bond strength was highest in group II (17.46 ± 1.36), which was followed by group I (15.33 ± 2.78) and the least was shown by group III (13.96 ± 1.44). A statistically significant difference was found between group I vs II, group II vs III, and group III vs II. Utmost prevalence of about 35% was found in Transbond XT with an ARI score of 3 (followed by all adhesive left on the tooth), Filtek Z350 XT with 20%, and the least was found with Xeno V, about 5%. The probability was found to be p = 0.025 among different groups, which is statistically significant according to chi-square test. CONCLUSION The study concluded that the adhesive materials of the seventh generation showed higher shear bond strength than that of the flowable composite and conventional acid etching. The ARI indicated that a minimum amount of the residual adhesive was found on the surface of the enamel after debonding. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study helps orthodontists to select appropriate adhesive and orthodontic brackets for the benefit of the patient and to distinguish the distribution of stress homogeneously within the layer of cement while loading and subsequently minimizing the damage to the enamel during the debonding of orthodontic brackets.

Enamel Deproteinization or Sandblasting for Enamel Reconditioning Before Acid Etching to Enhance the Shear Bond Strength of Metallic Brackets in a Third Bonding: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:Background: Enamel conditioning with 37% phosphoric acid is the most common technique during orthodontic bracket bonding procedures. However, due to the repeated de-bonding of the orthodontic brackets during treatment, other methods were needed to condition the enamel surface and increase the bond strength. This study aimed to compare the effect of conditioning the enamel surface by sandblasting with aluminum oxide particles or 5.25% sodium hypochlorite gel in combination with acid etching compared to acid etching alone on shear bond strength (SBS). Material and methods: One hundred eight extracted upper premolars were randomly divided into three groups according to the conditioning enamel surface method. After the first and second bonding of metal brackets, new metal brackets were bonded with a total-etching adhesive after enamel conditioning using different methods: acid etching only (37% phosphoric acid for 30 seconds) (AE group), sodium hypochlorite associated with acid etching (5.25% NaOCl gel for 60 seconds and then acid etching for 30 seconds) (NaOCl-AE group), and sandblasting associated with acid etching (sandblasting for five seconds and then acid etching for 30 seconds) (SB-AE group). The shear bond strengths of the brackets were tested with a universal testing machine. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD) tests were used to detect significant differences in shear bond strength among groups at the third bonding. Repeated-measure ANOVA and Bonferroni's tests were used to detect significant differences in shear bond strength among the bonding attempts within each group. Results: 5.25% sodium hypochlorite associated with the acid etching method produced significantly greater shear bond strength than sandblasting associated with acid etching and acid etching only methods at the third bonding (16.40 ± 5.80 MPa, 13.60.47 ± 6.40 MPa, and 9.90 ± 4.40 MPa, respectively; P < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference between the AE and SB-AE groups (P = 0.247). In addition, we found a significant decrease in the shear bond strength within each group after each bonding attempt. Conclusion: Conditioning the enamel surface with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite associated with acid etching produced greater bond strength than conditioning by sandblasting associated with acid etching and acid etching only at the third bonding. The bond strength of the metal bracket decreased with increasing bonding attempts, even with the application of enamel surface conditioning methods.

Abstract:Orthodontic treatment frequently requires bonding brackets onto various types of surfaces like enamel, metal restorations, composites, ceramics, zirconia, acrylic temporaries etc. The development of new materials and techniques, simplifies the clinical procedures. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the SBS of all surface bonding Primer (Assure plus Primer) compared with conventional primer (Transbond XT) onto tooth, acrylic temporary crown and Zirconia crown surfaces using metal and ceramic brackets. 120 samples were divided into 3 Groups - Tooth surfaces (n=40), Acrylic temporary crown (n=40) and PFM crown surfaces (n=40). Subgroup A surfaces were primed with Transbond XT and bonded using Transbond XT adhesive paste to metal brackets and ceramic brackets. Subgroups B were primed with Assure Plus and bonded using Transbond XT adhesive paste. After debonding procedure, SBS was assessed. Group-III showed higher SBS values compared to Group-II and Group-I. The least SBS was seen in Group I, Subgroup-I B, Assure Plus Primer and metal brackets combination and the highest was seen in Group-III, Subgroup-III B, Assure Plus Primer and ceramic brackets combination.
Effect of Chlorhexidine Application in a Self-Etching Adhesive on the Immediate Resin-Dentin Bond Strength.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To investigate whether the application of chlorhexidine in a two-step self-etching adhesive has an adverse effect on the immediate resin-dentin bond strength.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Different amounts of 20 wt% chlorhexidine digluconate were added directly to the Clearfil SE Bond primer to prepare mixtures of 4 different concentrations of chlorhexidine: 0.05 wt%, 0.1 wt%, 0.5 wt%, and 1.0 wt%. Sixteen extracted third molars were randomly divided into 4 groups. Each group corresponded to one of the 4 chlorhexidine concentrations. Each of the 16 teeth was sectioned into halves. One half was customarily bonded with Clearfil SE Bond without chlorhexidine, and the other half was bonded with Clearfil SE Bond containing different concentrations of chlorhexidine. Microtensile bond strengths were tested immediately after specimen preparation. The modes of fractures were examined under a stereomicroscope.RESULTS:No significant difference of immediate resin-dentin bond strength was observed between the control groups and any of the experimental groups containing chlorhexidine (p > 0.05).CONCLUSION:The addition of chlorhexidine to a two-step self-etching adhesive primer (Clearfil SE Bond primer) has no adverse effect on the immediate resin-dentin bond strength when the chlorhexidine concentration in the primer is lower than or equal to 1.0 wt%.
Effect of Preventive Dental Products on Bonding Force: An in vitro Study

Abstract:Aim: Testing the effect of Fluoride, chlorhexidine, and molecular iodine applications on the mean micro-shear bond strength (SBS) of enamel in an attempt to preserve enamel integrity during the bonding process. Materials and methods: The study was an observational case-control one in which 150 human teeth were classified into 10 groups according to the product kind and the prescribed treatment. Each group consisted of 15 teeth. Group C was the control group. Groups FP, FV, and OS utilized products that could be utilized in a professional dental setting. Group FP was treated with 1.23% NaF prophy paste, Group FV was treated with 5% NaF varnish, and Group OS was treated with Opal® Seal Fluoride releasing primer and sealant. Groups L, LF, CHX, and I were treated with mouth rinses. Group L was treated with Listerine Zero Fluoride-Free Mouthwash, Group LF with Listerine Zero 0.02% NaF Mouth Rinse, Group CHX with 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate, and Group I with ioRinse RTU 100 ppm molecular iodine rinse. Groups TP and G utilized alternative remineralization products. Group TP was treated with Fluoro Calcium Phosphosilicate bioglass containing toothpaste, and Group G was treated with Curodont Protect remineralizing tooth gel. One-way ANOVA test was utilized to perform all statistical analysis in this study. Results: For mean micro-SBS, no significant difference (P > 0.05) between any of the experimental groups was observed when compared to the control group. There was a significant difference (P < 0.05) between Opal Seal versus Listerine Total, Opal Seal versus Peridex, Listerine versus Listerine Total, and Listerine versus Peridex. All other experimental group comparisons revealed a nonsignificant difference (P > 0.05). Conclusions: As the null hypothesis (H0) assumes that changes observed in an experiment are due to chance, hence, the outcomes of this study are coherent with (H0) since the aforementioned application methods did not significantly impact the SBS of orthodontic resin cement to enamel.
Comparative evaluation of the effect of two natural collagen cross-linkers on microtensile bond strength of self-etch adhesive system to dentin after contamination with blood and hemostatic agent: An in vitro study

Abstract:Background: Cavity preparation often causes gingival bleeding which can be controlled by hemostatic agents (HAs). These along with blood act as contaminants and hamper the bonding mechanism. Collagen cross-linkers (CCLs) are agents known to increase the bond strength (BS) to dentin. Hence, the purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the effect of two different CCLs, proanthocyanidin (grape seed extract [GSE]) and hesperidin on the microtensile BS (μTBS) of a self-etch adhesive (SEA) system to dentin which was contaminated with blood and a HA. Materials and methods: Thirty-six extracted human molars were collected, and their occlusal surfaces were sectioned to expose the dentin. The teeth were randomly divided into four groups: Group I - Control, Group II - Contamination with blood and HA, Group III - Application of GSE after contamination, and Group IV - Application of hesperidin extract after contamination. The SEA was applied, followed by the use of a nanocomposite. Dentin-composite rods were obtained from each group, and μTBS testing was done. The fracture pattern was visually classified as an adhesive failure at the interface, cohesive failure in composite, or dentin. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was done for two samples from each group. Statistical analysis was done using the Student's unpaired "t" and ANOVA test. Results: Group II showed a statistically significant reduction in μTBS in comparison to Group I. This was overcome in Groups III and IV. Hesperidin showed marginally better results than GSE. Conclusions: The use of GSE and hesperidin increases the μTBS of composite resin to dentin postcontamination with blood and ViscoStat Clear with Single Bond Universal Adhesive.
Effects of Antioxidants on the Shear Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets Bonded to Bleached Human Teeth: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different concentrations of sodium ascorbate (SA), green tea (GT), and chamomile (CM) on the shear bond strength (SBS) of metal orthodontic brackets bonded to teeth bleached with 40% hydrogen peroxide (HP). Materials and methods: Ninety-four sound premolars were divided into eight groups: group I (control + no bleaching), group II (bleaching + immediate bonding), group III (bleaching + 10% SA), group IV (bleaching + 35% SA), group V (bleaching + 0.5% GT), group VI (bleaching + 1% GT), group VII (bleaching + 0.5% CM), and group VIII (bleaching + 1% CM). In groups III-VIII, teeth were treated with the antioxidants for 10 minutes after bleaching with 40% HP, but before bonding. All the specimens were bonded with the resilience adhesive, and the SBS was tested with a universal testing machine (Instron 5965). The cross-head speed to break the bond was 1 mm/minute. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) was tested under 50× magnification. One-way analysis of variance, Tukey's post hoc, and Chi-squared tests were used for analysis (p ≤ 0.05). Results: The differences in SBS among the eight tested groups were highly significant (p < 0.001). Comparison of the eight groups using Tukey's post hoc test revealed significantly lower SBS (p < 0.001) in test groups II, III, IV, and VIII than in group I. Adhesive remnant index scores showed significant intergroup differences (p = 0.005). Most groups had a failure score of 1 (<50% of the bonding material adhering to the tooth), whereas groups II and VIII showed a failure score of 0 (no material adhering to the tooth). Conclusion: Bond strength can be enhanced by using 0.5% or 1% GT or 0.5% CM to allow bracket bonding immediately after bleaching. Clinical significance: The use of antioxidants would allow clinicians to bleach teeth before orthodontic treatment without delaying bonding.
Enamel deproteinization before acid etching and its effect on the shear bond strength--an in vitro study

Study design: Forty human sound permanent molars which were extracted for periodontal reasons were used in the experimental protocol as under: Group-A (20 teeth):-A 5X4 mm window of the enamel surface was etched with 37% H3PO4 gel for 15 seconds, washed with distilled water and air dried. A single coat of Adper Single Bond 2 adhesive was applied and photo polymerized for 20 seconds and Filtek Z-350 XT composite resin block of length 5 mm, width 4 mm and height 5mm respectively was built and photo polymerized in increments for 20 seconds each. Group-B (20 teeth):--Similarly the enamel surface was treated with 5.25% NaOCl for 60 seconds, washed with distilled water and then etched with 37% H3PO4 gel for 15 seconds, washed with distilled water and air dried. The shear bond strength of all the samples were measured (in MPa) on Instron Mechanical Testing Machine. Results: The mean shear bond strength value for Group-A was 13.51 +/- 5.726 MPa and for Group-B being 15.06 +/- 6.220 MPa. No statistically significant difference in the shear bond strengths was observed between the two groups. Conclusions: No significant effect of sodium hypochlorite enamel deproteinization on the shear bond strength of Adper Single Bond 2 adhesive and Filtek Z-350 XT composite resin before acid etching was observed in this study.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Cavity preparation is a surgical procedure that attempts to remove all infected dentin.1 Bacteria left beneath the filling material is greatest threat to the pulp. To reduce the potential for residual caries development and sensitivity, an antibacterial solution with the ability to disinfect the prepared tooth surface would be of help.2 So this study was conducted to evaluate and compare the effect of dentin disinfection with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (Consepsis) and 0.3% iodine (Ora5) on shear bond strength (SBS) of self-etch adhesives to dentin.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Buccal surfaces of 36 caries-free permanent third molars were ground to expose dentin. All specimens were mounted on acrylic block, divided randomly into three groups, namely group I (control), group II (Con-sepsis), and group III (Ora5). After the application of cavity disinfectant and bonding procedures as per manufacturer's instructions, composite cylinders were built. Then SBS was measured using universal testing machine.RESULTS: Statistical analysis of the measurements were made using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), which showed that when cavity disinfectants (Consepsis and Ora5) were used there was significant reduction in SBS of composite to dentin when compared with that of control group.INTERPRETATION AND CONCLUSION: The results indicate that the use of commercially available cavity disinfectants, Consepsis containing 2% chlorhexidine gluconate and Ora5 containing 0.3% iodine and 0.15% potassium iodide with self-etch adhesive (Adper Prompt), would significantly lower SBS of composite to dentin.HOW TO CITE THIS ARTICLE: Suma NK, Shashibhushan KK, Reddy VVS. Abstract:This in vitro study assessed the effect of different primers on the shear bond strength (SBS) and adhesive remnant index (ARI) of orthodontic brackets bonded to reinforced polyetheretherketone (PEEK) substrate. A total of 40 specimens were randomly distributed to two groups based on the primer used for orthodontic bonding: group 1 (control)-Transbond XT adhesive with Visio.link primer and group 2 (test)-orthodontic adhesive (Transbond XT) with traditional orthodontic primer. After bonding, specimens were thermocycled followed by SBS testing and ARI scoring of debonded specimens. Data were analyzed using the unpaired independent t-test and the Chi-square test. Group 1 specimens showed significantly higher SBS values (21.38 ± 1.48 MPa) compared to group 2 specimens (18.63 ± 1.29 MPa) (p < 0.0001). Adhesive remnant index scores showed no significant variations in bond failure modes and distributions between groups. The SBS obtained by the tested primers exceeded the clinically recommended value. Consequently, there is a comparable clinical application for both tested primers in orthodontic bonding, especially the traditional orthodontic primer, where the availability of Visio.link in clinical practice is not ensured.

Abstract:Background: In the search for alternatives to increase the bond strength of brackets, when necessary, this study proposes to apply the enamel deproteinization protocol to eliminate the proteins in the surface enamel to achieve better etching patterns and thereby increase bond strength. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of sodium hypochlorite as a deproteinizing agent on the bond strength of metal brackets. Material and methods: Forty bovine teeth were randomly and equally divided into two groups. The experimental group (n=20) underwent a deproteinization treatment with sodium hypochlorite at 5.25% for 60 seconds prior to acid etching of the enamel with 37% phosphoric acid and bracket bonding with Transbond XTTM resin. The control group (n=20) underwent enamel etching with 37% phosphoric acid and bracket bonding with Transbond XTTM resin. Shear strength and the adhesive remnant index were evaluated and the Students t and Chi-square tests were used (P<0.05). Results: The bond strength values of the control group (27.72±6.42 Mpa) were not significantly lower compared to the experimental group (29.21± 7.96 Mpa) (p=0.259). The adhesive remnant index showed a similar behavior in both groups, with the amount of adhesive remaining on the enamel being less than 50% in most samples of both the control and experimental group. Conclusions: Deproteinization treatment of bovine tooth enamel with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite for 60 seconds prior to enamel acid etching does not improve the bond strength of a resin in orthodontic bracket bonding. Abstract: Background: Contamination is a common problem in pediatric restorative dentistry and there are a few studies that investigate blood contamination, hemostatic agents, and tooth dentin. Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of blood contamination and hemostatic agents on the bond strength of two different bonding systems with the dentin of primary teeth. Materials and Methods: Buccal and lingual dentin surfaces of 40 primary second molar teeth were used for this study. Specimens were divided into 4 groups according to the contamination and hemostatic agents (Blood-B, Ankaferd Blood Stopper-A, ViscoStat-V, Control-C) and then every group was further divided into two subgroups according to the bonding systems (Clearfil SE Bond-I, All Bond Universal-II, n = 10 per group). A bulk-fill composite resin was built-up on the surfaces. The specimens were tested in the micro shear mode at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min on a universal test machine. Statistical analysis was performed with ANOVA and Tukey's tests at P < 0.05. Results: Significant differences have been detected in the micro shear bond strengths only between the Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS) (AI = 13.72 ± 4.47 and AII = 9.12 ± 4.4) and control groups (CI = 22.78 ± 10.86 and CII = 16.49 ± 6.55) without regards to the bonding systems. The highest scores were obtained in the control groups. Clearfil SE Bond showed better performance than All Bond Universal in all groups. Conclusion: It was determined that only the ABS contamination groups showed statistically significant decreases in the bond strengths when compared with control groups.

Abstract:Aims and objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of chitosan, Ankaferd Blood Stopper ® (ABS, Ankaferd Health Products Ltd, Turkey), and ferric sulfate (FS) on the shear-bond strength of the self-etch adhesive to primary tooth dentin. Materials and methods: The occlusal surfaces of 80 extracted human primary teeth (stored in a 0.5% chloramine-T solution at 4 o C) were ground flat, exposing the dentin. The teeth were divided into 4 groups: chitosan, ABS, FS, and control. Hemostatic agents were applied to the teeth, and then they were rinsed with distilled water and air dried. In the control group, the teeth were only rinsed with distilled water and slightly air dried. A self-etch adhesive was applied, and the composite cylinder was created on all the samples. Shear-bond strength was tested with a universal testing machine. Failure mode analysis was performed using scanning electron microscopy. Results: The study revealed no statistically significant difference between the hemostatic agent and control groups in terms of bond strength ( P >.05). The highest bond strength was observed in the chitosan group. In this group, a statistically significant difference between chitosan and ABS was observed ( P <.05). The adhesive failure was the predominant failure mode in all the groups. Conclusions: These findings suggest that chitosan, ABS, and FS have no adverse effects on the bonding of the self-etch adhesive to primary teeth dentin.
