Abstract:Heat can flow from cold to hot at any phase separation. Therefore Lynden-Bell's gravo-thermal catastrophe must be reconsidered. The original objects of Thermodynamics, the separation of phases at first order phase transitions, like boiling water in steam engines, are not described by a single canonical ensemble. Inter-phase fluctuations are not covered. The basic principles of statistical mechanics, especially of phase transitions have to be reconsidered without the use of the thermodynamic limit. Then thermo-statistics applies also to nuclei and large astronomical systems. A lot of similarity exists between the accessible phase space of fragmenting nuclei and inhomogeneous multi stellar systems.

Abstract:Conventional thermo-statistics address infinite homogeneous systems within the canonical ensemble. (Only in this case this is equivalent to the fundamental microcanonical ensemble.) However, some 170 years ago the original motivation of thermodynamics was the description of steam engines, i.e. boiling water. Its essential physics is the separation of the gas phase from the liquid. Of course, boiling water is inhomogeneous and as such cannot be treated by conventional thermo-statistics. Then it is not astonishing, that a phase transition of first order is signaled canonically by a Yang-Lee singularity. Thus it is only treated correctly by microcanonical Boltzmann-Planck statistics. It turns out that the Boltzmann-Planck statistics is much richer and gives fundamental insight into statistical mechanics and especially into entropy. This can be done to a far extend rigorously and analytically. As no extensivity, no thermodynamic limit, no concavity, no homogeneity is needed, it also applies to astro-physical systems. The deep and essential difference between ``extensive'' and ``intensive'' control parameters, i.e. microcanonical and canonical statistics, is exemplified by rotating, self-gravitating systems. In the present paper the necessary appearance of a convex entropy S(E) and negative heat capacity at phase separation in small as well macroscopic systems independently of the range of the force is pointed out. Thus the old puzzle of stellar statistics is finally solved, the appearance of negative heat capacity which is forbidden and cannot appear in the canonical formalism.

Abstract:Boltzmann's principle S=k ln W allows to extend equilibrium thermo-statistics to ``Small'' systems without invoking the thermodynamic limit. The clue is to base statistical probability on ensemble averaging and not on time averaging. It is argued that due to the incomplete information obtained by macroscopic measurements thermodynamics handles ensembles or finite-sized sub-manifolds in phase space and not single time-dependent trajectories. Therefore, ensemble averages are the natural objects of statistical probabilities. This is the physical origin of coarse-graining which is not anymore a mathematical ad hoc assumption. From this concept all equilibrium thermodynamics can be deduced quite naturally including the most sophisticated phenomena of phase transitions for ``Small'' systems. Boltzmann's principle is generalized to non-equilibrium Hamiltonian systems with possibly fractal distributions ${\cal{M}}$ in 6N-dim. phase space by replacing the conventional Riemann integral for the volume in phase space by its corresponding box-counting volume. This is equal to the volume of the closure $\bar{\cal{M}}$. With this extension the Second Law is derived without invoking the thermodynamic limit. The irreversibility in this approach is due to the replacement of the phase-space volume by the volume of its closure $\bar{\cal{M}}$. The physical reason for this replacement is that macroscopic measurements cannot distinguish ${\cal{M}}$ from $\bar{\cal{M}}$. Whereas the former is not changing in time due to Liouville's theorem, the volume of the closure can be larger. In contrast to conventional coarse graining the box-counting volume is defined in the limit of infinite resolution. I.e. there is no artificial loss of information.

Abstract:Equilibrium statistics of finite Hamiltonian systems is fundamentally described by the microcanonical ensemble (ME). Canonical, or grand-canonical partition functions are deduced from this by Laplace transform. Only in the thermodynamic limit are they equivalent to ME for homogeneous systems. Therefore ME is the only ensemble for non-extensive/inhomogeneous systems like nuclei or stars where the $\lim_{N\to \infty,\rho=N/V=const}$ does not exist. Conventional canonical thermo-statistic is inapplicable for non-extensive systems. This has far reaching fundamental and quite counter-intuitive consequences for thermo-statistics in general: Phase transitions of first order are signaled by convexities of $S(E,N,Z,...)$ \cite{gross174}. Here the heat capacity is {\em negative}. In these cases heat can flow from cold to hot! The original task of thermodynamics, the description of boiling water in heat engines can now be treated. Consequences of this basic peculiarity for nuclear statistics as well for the fundamental understanding of Statistical Mechanics in general are discussed. Experiments on hot nuclei show all these novel phenomena in a rich variety. Abstract:Thermodynamics allows the application of Statistical Mechanics to finite and even small systems. As surface effects cannot be scaled away, one has to be careful with the standard arguments of splitting a system into two or bringing two systems into thermal contact with energy or particle exchange: Not only the volume part of the entropy must be considered. The addition of any other macroscopic constraint like a dividing surface, or the enforcement of gradients of the energy/particle reduce the entropy. As will be shown here, when removing such constraint in regions of a negative heat capacity, the system may even relax under a flow of heat against the temperature slope. Thus Clausius formulation of the Second Law: "Heat always flows from hot to cold" can be violated. However, the Second Law is still satisfied and the total Boltzmann-entropy is rising. In the final chapter the general microscopic mechanism leading to the convexity of the microcanonical entropy at phase separation is discussed. This is explained for the liquid--gas and the solid--liquid transition.

Abstract:A comparison is made of the traditional Loschmidt (reversibility) and Zermelo (recurrence) objections to Boltzmann's H-theorem, and its simplified variant in the Ehrenfests' 1912 wind-tree model. The little-cited 1896 (pre-recurrence) objection of Zermelo (similar to an 1889 argument due to Poincare) is also analysed. Significant differences between the objections are highlighted, and several old and modern misconceptions concerning both them and the H-theorem are clarified. We give particular emphasis to the radical nature of Poincare's and Zermelo's attack, and the importance of the shift in Boltzmann's thinking in response to the objections as a whole.

Abstract:Charged Higgs boson production in association with a top quark could be the first indication of the existence of Higgs particles. The Tevatron Run-II started data-taking in April 2001 at a centre-of-mass energy of 1960 GeV and could probe the existence of a charged Higgs boson beyond the current mass limit. We study the ppbar -> tbH^+/- production process with Monte Carlo simulations in HERWIG and PYTHIA, comparing expected cross sections and basic selection variables.

Abstract:Ludwig Boltzmann had a hunch that irreversibility exhibited by a macroscopic system arises from the reversible dynamics of its microscopic constituents. He derived a nonlinear integro-differential equation - now called the Boltzmann equation - for the phase space density of the molecules of a dilute fluid. He showed that the Second law of thermodynamics emerges from Newton's equations of motion. However Boltzmann realized that stosszahlansatz, employed in the derivation, smuggles in an element of stochasticity into the transport equation. He then proposed a fully stochastic description of entropy which laid the foundation for statistical mechanics. Recent developments, embodied in different fluctuation theorems, have shown that Boltzmann's hunch was, in essence, correct.

Abstract:In the comment by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://T.Dauxois" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> et al.,(<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/0605445" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/0605445">cond-mat/0605445</a>), the authors question our application of the nonextensive statistical mechanics proposed by Tsallis, to explain the anomalous dynamics of the Hamiltonian Mean Field (HMF) model. More specifically they claim that the explanation of the metastability found in the out-of-equilibrium dynamics is only a fitting procedure and is also in contrast with a previous application. This criticism mostly relies on recent studies based on the Vlasov approach, where the authors claim to explain the anomalous behaviour of the HMF model in terms of a standard formalism. In order to reply to this comment we want to stress a few numerical facts and conclude with some final considerations. A recent paper by P-H. Chavanis (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/0604234" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/0604234">cond-mat/0604234</a>) is also important to clarify the question here debated.

Abstract:Materials that are constantly driven out of thermodynamic equilibrium, such as active and living systems, typically violate the Einstein relation. This may arise from active contributions to particle fluctuations which are unrelated to the dissipative resistance of the surrounding medium. We show that in these cases the widely used relation between informatic entropy production and heat dissipation does not hold. Consequently, fluctuation relations for the mechanical work, such as the Jarzynski and Crooks theorems, are invalid. We relate the breaking of the correspondence between entropy production and heat dissipation to departure from the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. We propose a temperature-like variable which restores this correspondence and gives rise to a generalized second law of thermodynamics, whereby the dissipated heat is necessarily nonnegative and vanishes at equilibrium. The Clausius inequality, Carnot maximum efficiency theorem, and relation between the extractable work and the change of free energy are recovered as well.

Abstract:In his Comment [1], Philip Strasberg (PS) argues from the analysis of different examples that the framework we have presented in [2] does not recover known results of macroscopic textbook thermodynamics. Here, we show that such apparent contradictions disappear when the necessary assumptions the aforementioned known results pre-suppose are applied. Those assumptions concern the control ability of the observer, the nature of the described degree of freedom, or the scale of the systems. The ability to relax those assumptions is precisely a motivation of our framework, which can explore the capacity of quantum systems to exchange work and heat even at scales not captured by textbook thermodynamics. We take the opportunity of this reply to further expand on the use of our framework and its connections with traditional thermodynamics.

Abstract:Does thermodynamics still hold true for mecroscopic small systems with only limited degrees of freedom? Do concepts such as temperature, entropy, work done, heat transfer, isothermal processes, and the Carnot cycle remain valid? Does the thermodynamic theory for small systems need modifying or supplementing compared with traditional thermodynamics applicable to macroscopic systems? Taking a single-particle system for example, we investigate the applicability of thermodynamic concepts and laws in small systems. We have found that thermodynamic laws still hold true in small systems at an ensemble-averaged level. After considering the information erasure of the Maxwell’s demon, the second law of thermodynamics is not violated. Additionally, ‘small systems’ bring some new features. Fluctuations in thermodynamic quantities become prominent. In any process far from equilibrium, the distribution functions of thermodynamic quantities satisfy certain rigorously established identities. These identities are known as fluctuation theorems. The second law of thermodynamics can be derived from them. Therefore, fluctuation theorems can be considered an upgradation to the second law of thermodynamics. They enable physicists to obtain equilibrium properties (e.g. free energy difference) by measuring physical quantities associated with non-equilibrium processes (e.g. work distributions). Furthermore, despite some distinct quantum features, the performance of quantum heat engine does not outperform that of classical heat engine. The introduction of motion equations into small system makes the relationship between thermodynamics and mechanics closer than before. Physicists can study energy dissipation in non-equilibrium process and optimize the power and efficiency of heat engine from the first principle. These findings enrich the content of thermodynamic theory and provide new ideas for establishing a general framework for non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

Abstract:Recently, Elouard and Lombard Latune [PRX Quantum 4, 020309 (2023)] claimed to extend the laws of thermodynamics to "arbitrary quantum systems" valid "at any scale" using "consistent" definitions allowing them to "recover known results" from the literature. I show that their definitions are in conflict with textbook thermodynamics and over- or underestimate the real entropy production by orders of magnitude. The cause of this problem is traced back to problematic definitions of entropy and temperature, the latter, for instance, violates the zeroth law. It is pointed out that another framework presented in PRX Quantum 2, 030202 (2021) does not suffer from these problems, while Elouard and Lombard Latune falsely claim that it only provides a positive entropy production for a smaller class of initial states. A simple way to unify both approaches is also presented.

Second law of thermodynamics: A case study searching for quantum non-thermodynamic phenomena

Abstract:Recent research on the fundamentals of statistical mechanics has led to an interesting discovery: With locally nonchaotic barriers, as Boltzmann's H-theorem is inapplicable, there exist nontrivial non-thermodynamic systems that can produce useful work by absorbing heat from a single thermal reservoir without any other effect, thereby breaking the boundaries of the second law of thermodynamics. The previous analyses used classical mechanical models. In the current investigation, the study is extended to quantum mechanics. First, we confirm that the Fermi-Dirac distribution and the Bose-Einstein distribution are inherently consistent with the heat-engine statement of the second law of thermodynamics. It reiterates the robustness of the overall framework of quantum statistical mechanics. Next, we perform thermodynamic analysis on a set of simple-step scattering problems. The result suggests that a bound state has a strong tendency to adhere to the second law of thermodynamics, while an unbound state may not. It implies that non-thermodynamic phenomena favor unquantized energy.

Abstract:When a second-order phase transition is crossed at fine rate, the evolution of the system stops being adiabatic as a result of the critical slowing down in the neighborhood of the critical point. In systems with a topologically nontrivial vacuum manifold, disparate local choices of the ground state lead to the formation of topological defects. The universality class of the transition imprints a signature on the resulting density of topological defects: It obeys a power law in the quench rate, with an exponent dictated by a combination of the critical exponents of the transition. In inhomogeneous systems the situation is more complicated, as the spontaneous symmetry breaking competes with bias caused by the influence of the nearby regions that already chose the new vacuum. As a result, the choice of the broken symmetry vacuum may be inherited from the neighboring regions that have already entered the new phase. This competition between the inherited and spontaneous symmetry breaking enhances the role of causality, as the defect formation is restricted to a fraction of the system where the front velocity surpasses the relevant sound velocity and phase transition remains effectively homogeneous. As a consequence, the overall number of topological defects can be substantially suppressed. When the fraction of the system is small, the resulting total number of defects is still given by a power law related to the universality class of the transition, but exhibits a more pronounced dependence on the quench rate. This enhanced dependence complicates the analysis but may also facilitate experimental test of defect formation theories.

Detecting temperature fluctuations at equilibrium

Abstract:Gibbs and Boltzmann definitions of temperature agree only in the macroscopic limit. The ambiguity in identifying the equilibrium temperature of a finite sized `small' system exchanging energy with a bath is usually understood as a limitation of conventional statistical mechanics. We interpret this ambiguity as resulting from a stochastically fluctuating temperature coupled with the phase space variables giving rise to a broad temperature distribution. With this ansatz, we develop the equilibrium statistics and dynamics of small systems. Numerical evidence using an analytically tractable model shows that the effects of temperature fluctuations can be detected in equilibrium and dynamical properties of the phase space of the small system. Our theory generalizes statistical mechanics to small systems relevant to biophysics and nanotechnology.

Resolving the Debate Between Boltzmann and Gibbs Entropy: Relative Energy Window Eliminates Thermodynamic Inconsistencies and Allows Negative Absolute Temperatures

Abstract:Small systems consisting of a few particles are increasingly technologically relevant. In such systems, an intense debate in microcanonical statistical mechanics has been about the correctness of Boltzmann's surface entropy versus Gibbs' volume entropy. Both entropies have shortcomings -- while Boltzmann entropy predicts unphysical negative/infinite absolute temperatures for small systems with unbounded energy, Gibbs entropy entirely disallows negative absolute temperatures, in disagreement with experiments. We consider a relative energy window, motivated by the Heisenberg energy-time uncertainty principle and eigenstate thermalization in quantum mechanics. The proposed entropy ensures positive, finite temperatures for systems without a maximum limit on their energy and allows negative absolute temperatures in bounded energy systems, e.g., with population inversion. It also closely matches canonical ensemble predictions for prototypical systems, thus correctly describing the zero-point energy of an isolated quantum harmonic oscillator. Overall, we enable accurate thermodynamic models for isolated systems with few degrees of freedom.
