Abstract:We quantify the measurement-induced nonlocality [Luo and Fu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 120401 (2011)] from the perspective of the relative entropy. This quantification leads to an operational interpretation for the measurement-induced nonlocality, namely, it is the maximal entropy increase after the locally invariant measurements. The relative entropy of nonlocality is upper bounded by the entropy of the measured subsystem. We establish a relationship between the relative entropy of nonlocality and the geometric nonlocality based on the Hilbert-Schmidt norm, and show that it is equal to the maximal distillable entanglement. Several trade-off relations are obtained for tripartite pure states. We also give explicit expressions for the relative entropy of nonlocality for Bell-diagonal states.

Abstract:Nonlocal measurement, or instantaneous measurement of nonlocal observables, is a considerably difficult task even for a simple form of product observable since relativistic causality prohibits interaction between spacelike separate subsystems. Following a recent proposal for effectively creating the von Neumann measurement Hamiltonian of nonlocal observables [Brodutch and Cohen, Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 070404 (2016)], here we report a proof-of-principle demonstration of nonlocally measuring a product observable using linear optics without the violation of relativistic causality. Our scheme provides a feasible approach to perform nonlocal measurements via quantum erasure with linear optics.

Abstract:We use hyper-entanglement to experimentally realize deterministic entanglement swapping based on quantum Elegant Joint Measurements. These are joint projections of two qubits onto highly symmetric, iso-entangled, bases. We report measurement fidelities no smaller than 97.4%. We showcase the applications of these measurements by using the entanglement swapping procedure to demonstrate quantum correlations in the form of proof-of-principle violations of both bilocal Bell inequalities and more stringent correlation criteria corresponding to full network nonlocality. Our results are a foray into entangled measurements and nonlocality beyond the paradigmatic Bell state measurement and they show the relevance of more general measurements in entanglement swapping scenarios.

Abstract:We propose a generalized form of entangled coherent states (ECS) and apply them in a multi-arm optical interferometer to estimate multiple phase shifts. We obtain the quantum Cramer-Rao bounds for both the linear and nonlinear parametrization protocols. Through analysis utilizing simultaneous estimation. we find that this generalized form of ECS gives better precision than the generalized NOON states (2013 Phys. Rev. Lett. 111 070403). Moreover, when compared with the independent estimation both the linear and nonlinear protocols have the same advantage in the relation to the number of parameters.

Abstract:Nonlocality, manifested by the violation of Bell inequalities, indicates quantum entanglement in the underlying system. A natural question that arises is how much entanglement is required for a given nonlocal behavior. In this paper, we explore this question by quantifying entanglement using a family of generalized Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt-type Bell inequalities. We focus on two entanglement measures, entanglement of formation and one-way distillable entanglement, which are related to entanglement dilution and distillation, respectively. We also study the interplay among nonlocality, entanglement, and measurement incompatibility. The result reveals that the relationship between entanglement and measurement incompatibility is not simply a trade-off under a fixed nonlocal behavior. In addition, we consider two realistic scenarios non-maximally entangled states and Werner states and apply our entanglement quantification results. By optimizing the Bell inequality for entanglement estimation, we derive analytical results for the entanglement of formation.

Abstract:Entanglement and the wave function description are two of the core concepts that make quantum mechanics such a unique theory. A method to directly measure the wave function, using weak values, was demonstrated by Lundeen et al. [Nature 474, 188 (2011)]. However, it is not applicable to a scenario of two disjoint systems, where nonlocal entanglement can be a crucial element, since that requires obtaining weak values of nonlocal observables. Here, for the first time, we propose a method to directly measure a nonlocal wave function of a bipartite system, using modular values. The method is experimentally implemented for a photon pair in a hyperentangled state, i.e., entangled both in polarization and momentum degrees of freedom.
Classification of joint quantum measurements based on entanglement cost of localization

Abstract:Despite their importance in quantum theory, joint quantum measurements remain poorly understood. An intriguing conceptual and practical question is whether joint quantum measurements on separated systems can be performed without bringing them together. Remarkably, by using shared entanglement, this can be achieved perfectly when disregarding the post-measurement state. However, existing localization protocols typically require unbounded entanglement. In this work, we address the fundamental question: "Which joint measurements can be localized with a finite amount of entanglement?" We develop finite-resource versions of teleportation-based schemes and analytically classify all two-qubit measurements that can be localized in the first steps of these hierarchies. These include several measurements with exceptional properties and symmetries, such as the Bell state measurement and the elegant joint measurement. This leads us to propose a systematic classification of joint measurements based on entanglement cost, which we argue directly connects to the complexity of implementing those measurements. We illustrate how to numerically explore higher levels and construct generalizations to higher dimensions and multipartite settings.

Abstract:Nonlocality, manifested by the violation of Bell inequalities, indicates entanglement within a joint quantum system. A natural question is how much entanglement is required for a given nonlocal behavior. Given a Bell-inequality violation, we derive analytical lower bounds on the entanglement of formation, a measure related to entanglement dilution. The bounds also lead to an analytical estimation of the negativity of entanglement. In addition, we consider one-way distillable entanglement tied to entanglement distillation and derive tight numerical estimates. With the additional assumptions of qubit-qubit systems, we find that the relationship between entanglement and measurement incompatibility is not simply a trade-off under a fixed nonlocal behavior. Furthermore, we apply our results to two realistic scenarios --- non-maximally entangled and Werner states. We show that one can better utilize the nonlocal statistics by optimizing the Bell inequality for better entanglement estimation.

Abstract:We present a significantly improved scheme of entanglement detection inspired by local uncertainty relations for a system consisting of two qubits. Developing the underlying idea of local uncertainty relations, namely correlations, we demonstrate that it's possible to define a measure which is invariant under local unitary transformations and which is based only on local measurements. It is quite simple to implement experimentally and it allows entanglement quantification in a certain range for mixed states and exactly for pure states, without first obtaining full knowledge (e.g. through tomography) of the state.

The precise quantitative relation between two different measurement contexts can thus be characterized by the inner products of nonorthogonal states in that Hilbert space. Here, we use measurement outcomes that are shared by different contexts to derive specific quantitative relations between the inner products of the Hilbert space vectors that represent the different contexts. It is shown that the probabilities that describe the paradoxes of quantum contextuality can be derived from a very small number of inner products, revealing details of the fundamental relations between measurement contexts that go beyond a basic violation of noncontextual limits. The application of our analysis to a product space of two systems reveals that the nonlocality of quantum entanglement can be traced back to a local inner product representing the relation between measurement contexts in only one system. Our results thus indicate that the essential nonclassical features of quantum mechanics can be traced back to the fundamental difference between quantum superpositions and classical alternatives.

Abstract:The structures of nonlocal sets of orthogonal product states are of great significance to understanding the essence of quantum nonlocality. Recently, Zhen et al. [Phys. Rev. A 106:062432, 2022] propose general constructions of nonlocal sets with smaller size in multipartite systems. In this paper, we first give a novel method to construct a nonlocal set of orthogonal product states in quantum systems for and . The new set has the same number of elements with zhen et al.'s set in a same quantum system while its structure is different from that of zhen et al.'s set. Then, we generalize this construction method to quantum system and construct a nonlocal set of states with members which is lower than that of zhen et al.'s set, where . Comparing with the previous works, the nonlocal sets we constructed have fewer elements and good symmetric properties. This contributes to further research on the structures of nonlocal sets in multipartite systems.

Abstract:Using the concept of non-degenerate Bell inequality, we show that quantum entanglement, the critical resource for various quantum information processing tasks, can be quantified for any unknown quantum state in a semi-device-independent manner, where the quantification is based on the experimentally obtained probability distributions and prior knowledge of the quantum dimension only. Specifically, as an application of our approach to multi-level systems, we experimentally quantify the entanglement of formation and the entanglement of distillation for qutrit-qutrit quantum systems. In addition, to demonstrate our approach for multi-partite systems, we further quantify the geometric measure of entanglement of three-qubit quantum systems. Our results supply a general way to reliably quantify entanglement in multi-level and multi-partite systems, thus paving the way to characterize many-body quantum systems by quantifying the involved entanglement.
Genuine non-Gaussian entanglement: quantum correlations beyond Hong-Ou-Mandel

Abstract:Hong-Ou-Mandel effect is an important demonstration of particle indistinguishability, when identical single photons interfere at a beamsplitter to generate the two-photon entangled NOON state. On the other hand, NOON states with $N\ge3$ photons have long been conjectured beyond the deterministic generation of photon interference. To characterize the separation, we introduce the notion of genuine non-Gaussian entanglement (NGE), which cannot be generated via a generalized Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment, with Gaussian protocols extending the beamsplitter and separable input states replacing the single photons. We establish a resource theory to characterize such quantum correlations beyond Hong-Ou-Mandel and prove that NOON states with $N\ge 3$ are indeed among the NGE class. With the generalized Hong-Ou-Mandel protocol as free operations, we introduce two monotones to characterize genuine non-Gaussian entanglement: one derived from the entanglement entropy and the other from the minimal extension size required to convert a state into a free state. Finally, we demonstrate that the tomography process of pure free states can be performed efficiently, while all learning protocols of states with genuine non-Gaussian entanglement require exponential overheads connected to the monotone. This implies that states generated in Boson sampling are efficiently learnable despite its measurement statistics being hard to sample from.

Abstract:In recent years, researchers focused their attention on the construction of nonlocal product states in multipartite quantum systems. This paper proposes a novel partitioning method for multipartite quantum systems, aiming to improve the operation efficiency. Firstly, we divide 2n subsystems into n parts two by two and implement orthogonality-preserving local measurement on the partitioned composite systems. Subsequently, based on the partitioning mode, nonlocal orthogonal product states in ( C 3 ) ⊗ 6 and ( C 4 ) ⊗ 6 are given. Finally, we construct nonlocal orthogonal product states in ( C d ) ⊗ 2 n and discuss the cases where d is odd and even. Our results demonstrate the phenomenon of nonlocality without entanglement in a 2n-partite system.

Abstract:Entanglement has been recognized as being crucial when implementing various quantum information tasks.Nevertheless,quantifying entanglement for an unknown quantum state requires nonphysical operations or post-processing measurement data.For example,evaluation methods via quantum state tomography require vast amounts of measurement data and likely estimation.Although a direct entanglement determination has been reported for the unknown pure state,it is still tricky for the mixed state.In this work,assisted by weak mea-surement and deep learning technology,we directly detect the entanglement(namely,the concurrence)of a class of two-photon polarization-entangled mixed states both theoretically and experimentally according to the local photon spatial distributions after weak measurement.In this way,the number of projective bases is much smaller than that required in quantum state tomography.
Many-Body Entropies and Entanglement from Polynomially Many Local Measurements

Abstract:Estimating global properties of many-body quantum systems such as entropy or bipartite entanglement is a notoriously difficult task, typically requiring a number of measurements or classical postprocessing resources growing exponentially in the system size. In this work, we address the problem of estimating global entropies and mixed-state entanglement via partial-transposed (PT) moments and show that efficient estimation strategies exist under the assumption that all the spatial correlation lengths are finite. Focusing on one-dimensional systems, we identify a set of approximate factorization conditions (AFCs) on the system density matrix, which allow us to reconstruct entropies and PT moments from information on local subsystems. This identification yields a simple and efficient strategy for entropy and entanglement estimation. Our method could be implemented in different ways, depending on how information on local subsystems is extracted. Focusing on randomized measurements providing a practical and common measurement scheme, we prove that our protocol requires only polynomially many measurements and postprocessing operations, assuming that the state to be measured satisfies the AFCs. We prove that the AFCs hold for finite-depth quantum-circuit states and translation-invariant matrix-product density operators and provide numerical evidence that they are satisfied in more general, physically interesting cases, including thermal states of local Hamiltonians. Abstract:Entanglement, the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox and Bell’s failure of local-hiddenvariable (LHV) theories are three historically famous forms of “quantum nonlocality”. We give experimental criteria for these three forms of nonlocality in multi-particle systems, with the aim of better understanding the transition from microscopic to macroscopic nonlocality. We examine the nonlocality of N separated spin J systems. First, we obtain multipartite Bell inequalities that address the correlation between spin values measured at each site, and then we review spin squeezing inequalities that address the degree of reduction in the variance of collective spins. The latter have been particularly useful as a tool for investigating entanglement in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). We present solutions for two topical quantum states: multi-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states, and the ground state of a two-well BEC.
Localizing multipartite entanglement with local and global measurements

Abstract:We study the task of localizing multipartite entanglement in pure quantum states onto a subsystem by measuring the remaining systems. To this end, we fix a multipartite entanglement measure and consider two quantities: the multipartite entanglement of assistance (MEA), defined as the entanglement measure averaged over the post-measurement states and maximized over arbitrary measurements; and the localizable multipartite entanglement (LME), defined in the same way but restricted to only local single-system measurements. We choose the $n$-tangle, the genuine multipartite entanglement concurrence and the concentratable entanglement (CE) as the underlying seed measure, and discuss the resulting MEA and LME quantities. First, we prove easily computable upper and lower bounds on MEA and LME and establish Lipschitz-continuity for the $n$-tangle and CE-based LME and MEA. Using these bounds we investigate the typical behavior of entanglement localization by deriving concentration inequalities for the MEA evaluated on Haar-random states and performing numerical studies for small tractable system sizes. We then turn our attention to protocols that transform graph states. We give a simple criterion based on a matrix equation to decide whether states with a specified $n$-tangle value can be obtained from a given graph state, providing no-go theorems for a broad class of such graph state transformations beyond the usual local Clifford plus local Pauli measurement framework. We generalize this analysis to weighted graph states and show that our entanglement localization framework certifies the near-optimality of recently discussed local-measurement protocols to transform uniformly weighted line graph states into GHZ states. Finally, we demonstrate how our MEA and LEA quantities can be used to detect phase transitions in transversal field Ising models.

Abstract:Quasi-local integrals of motion are a key concept underpinning the modern understanding of many-body localisation, an intriguing phenomenon in which interactions and disorder come together. Despite the existence of several numerical ways to compute them - and astoundingly in the light of the observation that much of the phenomenology of many properties can be derived from them - it is not obvious how to directly measure aspects of them in real quantum simulations; in fact, the smoking gun of their experimental observation is arguably still missing. In this work, we propose a way to extract the real-space properties of such quasi-local integrals of motion based on a spatially-resolved entanglement probe able to distinguish Anderson from many-body localisation from non-equilibrium dynamics. We complement these findings with a new rigorous entanglement bound and compute the relevant quantities using tensor networks. We demonstrate that the entanglement gives rise to a well-defined length scale that can be measured in experiments.
