Abstract:Hong-Ou-Mandel effect is an important demonstration of particle indistinguishability, when identical single photons interfere at a beamsplitter to generate the two-photon entangled NOON state. On the other hand, NOON states with $N\ge3$ photons have long been conjectured beyond the deterministic generation of photon interference. To characterize the separation, we introduce the notion of genuine non-Gaussian entanglement (NGE), which cannot be generated via a generalized Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment, with Gaussian protocols extending the beamsplitter and separable input states replacing the single photons. We establish a resource theory to characterize such quantum correlations beyond Hong-Ou-Mandel and prove that NOON states with $N\ge 3$ are indeed among the NGE class. With the generalized Hong-Ou-Mandel protocol as free operations, we introduce two monotones to characterize genuine non-Gaussian entanglement: one derived from the entanglement entropy and the other from the minimal extension size required to convert a state into a free state. Finally, we demonstrate that the tomography process of pure free states can be performed efficiently, while all learning protocols of states with genuine non-Gaussian entanglement require exponential overheads connected to the monotone. This implies that states generated in Boson sampling are efficiently learnable despite its measurement statistics being hard to sample from.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to distinguish and characterize high - order non - Gaussian entanglement (NGE) in quantum entangled states. Specifically, the authors focus on how to generate and quantify NOON states of multi - photons (\(N \geq 3\)) and other types of non - Gaussian entangled states beyond the traditional Hong - Ou - Mandel (HOM) effect. The HOM effect is an important quantum interference phenomenon. When two identical single photons interfere on a beam splitter, a two - photon NOON state (\(|02\rangle+|20\rangle\)) can be deterministically generated, which is a classic example of quantum entanglement. However, for the case of \(N \geq 3\), generating NOON states becomes more complicated because these states cannot be deterministically generated through simple single - photon interference experiments. To meet this challenge, the authors introduce the concept of "genuine non - Gaussian entanglement" (NGE). Entangled states of this type cannot be generated by generalized HOM experiments, that is, they cannot be generated by Gaussian protocols (such as beam - splitter operations) and separable input states (such as single photons). They establish a resource theory to characterize this quantum correlation beyond the HOM effect and prove that NOON states with \(N \geq 3\) do belong to the NGE class. In addition, the paper also proposes two measurement methods to quantify NGE: 1. **Entanglement - entropy - based measurement**: Defined as the average of the minimized local von Neumann entropy after all Gaussian unitary transformations. 2. **Measurement based on minimum expansion size**: Defined as the minimum expansion size required to convert a state into a free state. Finally, the authors show that the tomography process of pure Gaussian entangled states (GE) can be efficiently completed, while the learning protocols for all states with genuine non - Gaussian entanglement require exponential costs, which are related to the measurement values. This result indicates that although the state measurement statistics in Boson sampling are difficult to simulate, its tomography process is efficient. Overall, this paper provides a new framework for understanding and characterizing multi - photon entangled states by introducing the NGE concept and the corresponding resource theory.
