Abstract:We synthesized a range of sulfonated polyaryletherketone (x%SCBI-SPAEK-6F) with pendant benzimidazole side groups at a tunable molar percentage (x within 5-15%) for potential application as proton exchange membrane (PEM). A systematic study had been undertaken to study the performance and the underlying structure-properties relationship of PEMs fabricated by those novel amphoteric polymers. It was found that the dimensional stability, oxidative stability and methanol resistance performance of x%SCBI-SPAEK-6F membranes were significantly improved with the increase of the benzimidazole content due to the acid-base interaction. In particular, the 5%SCBI-SPAEK-6F membrane exhibited a relative selectivity (10.5 x 10(3) S s cm(-3)) almost 20 times higher than that of Nafion117 membrane at 75 degrees C, demonstrating the significant promoted proton conductivity (0.35 S cm(-1)) and reduced methanol penetration (6 x 10(-7) cm(2) s(-1)) by the ionic barrier. With such superior performance, these polymers are promising for the fabrication of practical proton exchange membranes in commercial fuel cells.

Abstract:Improved proton conductivity and high durability are now a high concern for proton exchange membranes (PEMs). Therefore, highly proton conductive PEMs have been synthesized from branched sulfonimide-based poly(phenylenebenzophenone) (SI-branched PPBP) with excellent thermal and chemical stability. The branched polyphenylene-based carbon-carbon backbones of the SI-branched PPBP membranes were attained from the 1,4-dichloro-2,5-diphenylenebenzophenone (PBP) monomer using 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene as a branching agent (0.1%) via the Ni-Zn catalyzed C-C coupling reaction. The as-synthesized SI-branched PPBP membranes showed 1.00~1.86 meq./g ion exchange capacity (IEC) with unique dimensional stability. The sulfonimide groups of the SI-branched PPBP membranes had improved proton conductivity (75.9–121.88 mS/cm) compared to Nafion 117 (84.74 mS/cm). Oxidation stability by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fenton’s test study confirmed the significant properties of the SI-branched PPBP membranes. Additionally, a very distinct microphase separation between the hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties was observed using atomic force microscopic (AFM) analysis. Abstract:The development of high conductivity proton exchange membranes (PEM) with efficient ion channels is a focus of fuel cell research. In this work, PEMs based on sulfonated polyimide are prepared by a simple synthesis route. The conformational change of the polymer depends on the type of polymeric chemical structure, leading to the formation of nanoscale cavities and ion channels for rapid proton transport, as evidenced by micropore porosities tests and proton conductivity tests. CO 2 adsorption and desorption curves determined that the pore distribution of the polymer is 0.3–1.5 nm, and the specific surface area is up to 106.644 m 3 g −1 , and the microphase separation channels are measured by X-ray diffraction. The introduction of microporous structures and microphase separation channels work together to make excellent electrochemical performance. The proton conductivity of SPI-B40 with the ion-exchange capacity (IEC) of 1.76 mmol g −1 is up to 0.146 S cm −1 at 80 °C, and the power density can reach 869 mW cm −2 .

Developments of Highly Proton-Conductive Sulfonated Polymers for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Abstract:This review paper covers recent publications on the developments of highly proton-conductive sulfonated polymers for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The PEMs presenting proton conductivities exceeding that of Nafion membranes are especially focused on. The proton conductivities of PEMs have been correlated to their ion exchange values and morphological phase-separation. Formation of ionic channels is an effective approach to develop highly proton-conductive PEMs. The approaches could be grouped into (1) developments of microphase-separation with block copolymers, (2) side-chain and grafted sulfonated polymers, and (3) locally and densely sulfonated polymers. Formation of nanocomposites of PEMs with nanofillers has also shown great ability to increase the proton conductivities of the existed PEMs. Besides proton conductivities, the formation of nanocomposites also improves some PEM properties including mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and oxidative stability. The discussed publications have provided promising PEMs for the development of high performance fuel cells.
Fabrication of -SO3H-functionalized polyphosphazene-reinforced proton conductive matrix-mixed membranes

Abstract:Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) have emerged as very promising membranes for automotive applications because of their notable proton conductivity at low temperatures. These membranes find extensive utilization in fuel cells. Several polymeric materials have been used, but their application is constrained by their expense and intricate synthetic processes. Affordable and efficient synthetic methods for polymeric materials are necessary for the widespread commercial use of PEM technology. The polymeric combination of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and 4,4-diamino-2,2-biphenyldisulfonic acid facilitated the synthesis of PP-(PhSO3H)2, a polyphosphazene with built-in -SO3H moieties. Characterization revealed that it was a porous organic polymer with high stability. PP-(PhSO3H)2 exhibited a proton conductivity of up to 8.24 × 10-2 S cm-1 (SD = ±0.031) at 353 K under 98% relative humidity (RH), which was more than two orders of magnitude higher than that of its -SO3H-free analogue, PP-(Ph)2 (2.32 × 10-4 S cm-1) (SD = ±0.019) under identical conditions. Therefore, for application in a PEM fuel cell, PP-(PhSO3H)2-based matrix-mixed membranes (PP-(PhSO3H)2-MMMs) were fabricated by mixing them with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) in various ratios. The proton conductivity could reach up to 6.11 × 10-2 S cm-1 (SD = ±0.0048) at 353 K and 98%RH, when the weight ratio of PP-(PhSO3H)2 : PAN was 3 : 1, the value of which was comparable with those of commercially available electrolytes used in PEM fuel cells. PP-(PhSO3H)2-MMM (3 : 1) had an extended lifetime of reusability. Using phosphazene and bisulfonated multiple-amine modules as precursors, we demonstrated that a porous organic polymer with a highly effective proton-conductive matrix-mixed membrane for PEM fuel cells could be produced readily by an intuitive polymeric reaction.

Abstract:This study demonstrates the use of 1,5-naphthalenedisulfonic acid as a suitable building block for the efficient and economic preparation of alternating sulfonated polyphenylenes with high ion-exchange capacity (IEC) via Suzuki polycondensation. Key to large molar masses is the use of an all-meta-terphenyl comonomer instead of m-phenyl, the latter giving low molar masses and brittle materials. A protection/deprotection strategy for base-stable neopentyl sulfonates is successfully implemented to improve the solubility and molar mass of the polymers. Solution-based deprotection of polyphenylene neopentyl sulfonates at 150 °C in dimethylacetamide eliminates isopentylene quantitatively, resulting in membranes with high IEC (2.93 mequiv/g) and high proton conductivity (σ = 138 mS/cm). Water solubility of these copolymers with high IEC requires thermal cross-linking to prevent their dissolution under operating conditions. By balancing the temperature and time of the cross-linking process, water uptake can be restricted to 50 wt %, retaining an IEC of 2.33 mequiv/g and a conductivity of 85 mS/cm. Chemical stability is addressed by treatment of the membranes under Fenton's conditions and by considering barrier heights for desulfonation using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The DFT results suggest that 1,5-disulfonated naphthalenes are at least as stable as sulfonated polyphenylenes against desulfonation.

Abstract:The proton exchange membrane (PEM) with high sulfonation degree (DS) exhibits high proton conductivity but poor dimensional stability and mechanical properties. In order to improve dimensional stability and strength of PEM as well as maintaining excellent proton conductivity, we proposed to modify pre-oxidized polyacrylonitrile nanofibers (PPNF) through amino functionalization with NH2-UiO-66 (NU6). Compared with primary sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK), the dimensional stability of 1.3% NU6 @PPNF-SPEEK composite membrane increase 30% due to the chemical crosslinking structure of PPNF. The acid-enriched layers, which provide an efficient proton transport channel, form along the fibers because of interaction between NU6 and –SO3H, since then composite membranes exhibit higher proton conductivity. Most importantly, this study firstly revealed the mechanism of formation process of sulfuric acid-rich layer through FTIR and EDS, which could provide a strategy for constructing and adjusting the proton transport channel efficiently. In summary, with excellent proton conductivity, outstanding dimensional stability and great mechanical properties in hydrated condition has been successfully fabricated.

Abstract:Herein, fully hydrocarbon-based ionomer catalyst coated membranes based on sulfo-phenylated polyphenylene biphenyl (sPPB-H + ) are evaluated in a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer cell at 70°C. In conjunction with catalyst layers incorporating Nafion ® D520 ionomer, sPPB-H + membranes require a lower applied potential than reference Nafion ® NR112 recast membranes of equal thickness, e.g., 1.66 V vs. 1.75 V at 1 A cm -2 . Initially, sPPB-H + membranes yield substantially lower gas crossover compared to the CCMs containing NR112 membrane, however, increasing gas crossover and a higher rates of voltage evolution is measured during a stability test at 1 A cm -2 . A reinforced and commercialized membrane of similar chemistry (Pemion ® ) is also evaluated, demonstrating smaller changes to the initial gas crossover owing to higher mechanical stability. Employment of sPPB-H + as the catalyst layer binder is also investigated, where the highest efficiency for all-sPPB-H + CCMs is achieved when the anode and cathode ionomer content are 20 wt%, which from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is predominately attributed to changes in the proton conductivity within the catalyst layer. Despite this advancement, high ionomer swelling and catalyst delamination led to shorter electrolyzer lifetimes for the all hydrocarbon and non fluorinated membrane electrode assembly, informing future ionomer development.

Facile Fabrication and Characterization of Improved Proton Conducting Sulfonated Poly(Arylene Biphenylether Sulfone) Blocks Containing Fluorinated Hydrophobic Units for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Applications

Abstract:Sulfonated poly(arylene biphenylether sulfone)-poly(arylene ether) (SPABES-PAE) block copolymers by controlling the molar ratio of SPABES and PAE oligomers were successfully synthesized, and the performances of SPABES-PAE (1:2, 1:1, and 2:1) membranes were compared with Nafion 212. The prepared membranes including fluorinated hydrophobic units were stable against heat, nucleophile attack, and physio-chemical durability during the tests. Moreover, the polymers exhibited better solubility in a variety of solvents. The chemical structure of SPABES-PAEs was investigated by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The membrane of SPABES-PAEs was fabricated by the solution casting method, and the membranes were very flexible and transparent with a thickness of 70–90 μm. The morphology of the membranes was observed using atomic force microscope and the ionic domain size was proved by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurement. The incorporation of polymers including fluorinated units allowed the membranes to provide unprecedented oxidative and dimensional stabilities, as verified from the results of ex situ durability tests and water uptake capacity, respectively. By the collective efforts, we observed an enhanced water retention capacity, reasonable dimensional stability and high proton conductivity, and the peak power density of the SPABES-PAE (2:1) was 333.29 mW·cm−2 at 60 °C under 100% relative humidity (RH).

Abstract:New composite proton exchange membrane was prepared by mixing a 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solution of sulfonated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (SPPO) in sodium form and brominated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (BPPO) for hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance, then casting the solution as a thin film, evaporating the solvent, and treating the membrane with aqueous hydrochloric acid. The resulting membranes were subsequently characterized using FTIR-ATR, SEM-EDXA, and TGA instrumentation as well as measurements of basic properties such as ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, proton conductivity, methanol permeability, and single cell performance. Water uptake, IEC, proton conductivity, and methanol permeability all increased with a corresponding increase of SPPO content. By properly compromising the conductivity and methanol permeability, membranes with 60-80 wt % SPPO content exhibited comparable proton conductivity to that of Nafion (R) 117, with only half the methanol permeability, thereby demonstrating higher single cell performance. Abstract:Proton exchange membrane (PEM) is pivotal for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In the present work, a block copolymer with hydrophilic alkyl sulfonated side groups and hydrophobic flexible alkyl ether side groups, poly(5'-hexyloxy-1',4-biphenyl)-b-poly(2',4'-bispropoxysulfonate-1',4-biphenyl) (HBP-b-xBPSBP), is designed and synthesized by copolymerization of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic oligomers. The oligomers are synthesized via a Pd-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling of 1,3-dibromo-5-hexyloxybenzene, and 3,3'-[(4,6-dibromo-1,3-phenylene)bis(oxy)]bis(propane-1-sulfonate) or 1,4-bis(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)benzene. The good solubility and film-forming characteristics are achieved via the introduction of flexible hexyloxy side groups, and high ion exchange capacity (IEC) is achieved via the introduction of high density of alkyl sulfonated side groups. The HBP-b-0.5BPSBP has the highest IEC of 3.17 mmol/g, the highest proton conductivity of 43.5 mS/cm at 95 °C and 90% relative humidity (RH) and low methanol permeability of 6.45×10-7 cm2 /s. Meanwhile, crosslinked HBP-b-xBPSBP exhibits promising water uptake, swelling ratio and low methanol permeability. These characteristics are attributed to the crosslinked structure and the hydrophilic/hydrophobic nanophase separation morphology promoted by the poly(m-phenylene) main chains, flexible alkyl ether groups, and alkyl sulfonated side groups.

Abstract:A novel type of hybrid membrane was fabricated by incorporating sulfonated polystyrene (S-PS) electrospun fibers into Nafion for the application in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. With the introduction of S-PS fiber mats, a large amount of sulfonic acid groups in Nafion aggregated onto the interfaces between S-PS fibers and the ionomer matrix, forming continuous pathways for facile proton transport. The resultant hybrid membranes had higher proton conductivities than that of recast Nafion, and the conductivities were controlled by selectively adjusting the fiber diameters. Consequently, hybrid membranes fabricated by ionomers, such as Nafion, incorporated with ionic-conducting nanofibers established a promising strategy for the rational design of high-performance proton exchange membranes.

Abstract:Based on the preparation of chloromethylated polysulfone(CMPS), two types of sulfonated polysulfone, naphthalenesulfonic acid type sulfonated polysulfone(PS-NS) and pyrenesulfonic acid type sulfonated polysulfone(PS-TS) were successfully obtained via nucleophilic substitution with 2-naphthol-6,8-disulfonic acid dipotassium(NS) and 8-hydroxy-1,3,6-pyrene trisulfonic acid sodium(TS) as reagents, respectively. The PS-NS and PS-TS Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) were obtained by solution casting method after characterizing their structure by FT-IR and 1 H-NMR. The impact of phenyl side chain on performance including water uptake(WU), swelling ratio(SR) and proton conductivity(PC) of PEMs were explored. Atomic force microscopy(AFM) shows that the phase separation structures of PS-NS and PS-TS PEMs are distinct due to the positioning of the hydrophilic sulfonic acid groups far away from the hydrophobic main chain. So the PS-NS and PS-TS PEMs keep excellent size stability, oxidative stability and methanol permeability at high WU. At the same bonding amount(BA) of sulfonic acid, due to less hydrophilic chain segment and a larger number of sulfonic acid groups in the hydrophilic chain segment, which is conducive to the aggregation of ion cluster. The PS-TS present better size stability and anti-oxidative at high WU. The SR of PS-TS-3 PEM was only 20.3 and 48.1%. Meanwhile, the methanol permeability was only 7.54 × 10 −7 cm 2 ·s −1 at room temperature, much lower than commercialization Nafion115 PEM (16.8 × 10 −7 cm 2 /s at room temperature). The research results are of great significance for the design and preparation of high-performance membrane materials.

Abstract:Glassy hydrocarbon-based membranes are being researched as a replacement for perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). Here, naphthalene containing poly(arylene ether ketone) was introduced into the poly(p-phenylene)-based multi-block copolymers through Ni(0)-catalyzed coupling reaction to enhance π-π interactions of the naphthalene units. It is discovered that there is an optimum input ratio of the hydrophilic monomer and NBP oligomer for the multi-block copolymers with high ion exchange capacity (IEC) and polymerization yield. With the optimum input ratio, the naphthalene containing copolymer exhibits good hydrogen gas barrier property, chemical stability, and mechanical toughness, even with its high IEC value over 2.4 meq g−1. The membrane shows 3.6 times higher proton selectivity to hydrogen gas than Nafion 212. The PEMWE single cells using the membrane performed better (5.5 A cm−2) than Nafion 212 (4.75 A cm−2) at 1.9 V and 80 °C. These findings suggest that naphthalene containing copolymer membranes are a promising replacement for PFSA membranes in PEMWE.

Abstract:Fuel cells represent a clean alternative to current technologies for utilizing hydrocarbon fuel resources. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have acquired due importance as they are best suited for applications where a quick start up is required such as in automobiles. The prime requirements of fuel cell membranes are high proton conductivity, low methanol/water permeability, good mechanical and thermal stability and moderate price. To satisfy the requiement of PEMFC, many new proton exchange membranes were developed. This paper reviews recent progress in the development of sulfonated block copolymers as membrane materials to replace the perfluorinated sulfonated membrane (e. g. Nafion) for fuel cell applications to improve the performances of fuel cells. Special attention is paid to sulfonated poly(arylene ether), sulfonated polyimide and sulfonated styrene based block copolymers, which have advantageous properties as compared to that of Nafion and analogous random copolymers of the same overall composition. Finally, the development trend of sulfonated block copolymers is prospected.
Enhanced Proton Transfer in Proton-Exchange Membranes with Interconnected and Zwitterion-Functionalized Covalent Porous Material Structures.

Abstract:Excellent proton-conductive accelerators are indispensable for efficient proton-exchange membranes (PEMs). Covalent porous materials (CPMs), with adjustable functionalities and well-ordered porosities, show much promise as effective proton-conductive accelerators. In this study, an interconnected and zwitterion-functionalized CPM structure based on carbon nanotubes and a Schiff-base network (CNT@ZSNW-1) is constructed as a highly efficient proton-conducting accelerator by in situ growth of SNW-1 onto carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and subsequent zwitterion functionalization. A composite PEM with enhanced proton conduction is acquired by integrating CNT@ZSNW-1 with Nafion. Zwitterion functionalization offers additional proton-conducting sites and promotes the water retention capacity. Moreover, the interconnected structure of CNT@ZSNW-1 induces a more consecutive arrangement of ionic clusters, which significantly relieves the proton transfer barrier of the composite PEM and increases its proton conductivity to 0.287 Scm(-1) under 95% RH at 90 degrees C (about 2.2 times that of the recast Nafion, 0.131 Scm(-1)). Furthermore, the composite PEM displays a peak power density of 39.6 mWcm(-2) in a direct methanol fuel cell, which is significantly higher than that of the recast Nafion (19.9 mWcm(-2)). This study affords a potential reference for devising and preparing functionalized CPMs with optimized structures to expedite proton transfer in PEMs.
Investigation on sulfonated PVC/polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)/polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) polymer blends as proton-conducting membrane

Abstract:The design and development of cost-effective and increased methanol permeable and proton-conductive membranes are critical concerns in the fabrication of polymeric electrolyte membranes (PEM). A solution-casting process was used to create a low-cost PEM based on sulfonated polyvinyl chloride (SPVC)-Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) blended with varying concentrations of Poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS). The contact angle, oxidative stability, swelling ratio, water uptake, and methanol uptake of SPVC/PMMA/PSS membranes were investigated as a function of PSS molar ratio. FT-IR examination, 1 H NMR spectra, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscope micrographs were additionally utilized for confirming the chemical structure, morphology, and thermal stability of SPVC/PMMA/PSS membranes. Furthermore, the ion exchange capacity (IEC), proton conductivity, and methanol permeability of SPVC/PMMA/PSS membranes were investigated depending on the PSS concentration. The results showed a significant increase in proton conductivity from 1.80 × 10 –2 for SPVC/PMMA/1%PSS to 4.7 × 10 –2 S/cm for SPVC/PMMA/5%PSS at ambient temperature. On the other hand, the methanol permeability (P = 8.53 × 10 –8 cm 2 /s) was noticeably lower than that of Nafion 117 (3.39 × 10 –6 cm 2 /s). Additionally, the IEC of the manufactured membrane was 1.38 ± 0.7 meq g −1 for SPVC/PMMA/5%PSS compared to 0.91 meq g −1 for Nafion 117 membranes. The maximum water uptake of the synthesized membranes was 48.37 ± 2.27%, whereas Nafion 117 membrane absorption was 65.44%. According to conductivity studies and the membrane efficiency factor, the ideal PSS content in a polymer matrix is 4 wt.%. Finally, the developed SPVC/PMMA/PSS polyelectrolytic membranes show improvements in essential properties such as methanol permeability, proton conductivity, and IEC when combined with low-cost materials, making them an attractive contender as PEM for DMFCs.

Abstract:Developing a low-cost and effective proton-conductive electrolyte to meet the requirements of the large-scale manufacturing of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells is of great significance in progressing towards the upcoming "hydrogen economy" society. Herein, utilizing the one-pot acylation polymeric combination of acyl chloride and amine precursors, a polyamide with in-built -SO3H moieties (PA-PhSO3H) was facilely synthesized. Characterization shows that it possesses a porous feature and a high stability at the practical operating conditions of PEM fuel cells. Investigations of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements revealed that the fabricated PA-PhSO3H displays a proton conductivity of up to 8.85 × 10−2 S·cm−1 at 353 K under 98% relative humidity (RH), which is more than two orders of magnitude higher than that of its -SO3H-free analogue, PA-Ph (6.30 × 10−4 S·cm−1), under the same conditions. Therefore, matrix-mixed membranes were fabricated by mixing with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) in different ratios, and the EIS analyses revealed that its proton conductivity can reach up to 4.90 × 10−2 S·cm−1 at 353 K and a 98% relative humidity (RH) when the weight ratio of PA-PhSO3H:PAN is 3:1 (labeled as PA-PhSO3H-PAN (3:1)), the value of which is even comparable with those of commercial-available electrolytes being used in PEM fuel cells. Additionally, continuous tests showed that PA-PhSO3H-PAN (3:1) possesses a long-life reusability. This work demonstrates, using the simple acylation reaction with the sulfonated module as precursor, that low-cost and highly effective proton-conductive electrolytes for PEM fuel cells can be facilely achieved.

Abstract:Developing a facile strategy to construct low-cost and efficient proton-conductive electrolytes is pivotal in the practical application of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Herein, a polyamide with in-built -SO3H moieties, PA(PhSO3H)2, was synthesized via a simple one-pot polymeric acylation process. Therefore, after mixing with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) at different ratios, PA(PhSO3H)2-based matrix-mixed membranes were subsequently made and the analysis results revealed that the proton conductivity can reach up to 5.82 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 353 K and 98% RH when the weight ratio of PA(PhSO3H)2 : PAN is in 3 : 1 (labeled as PA(PhSO3H)2-PAN(3 : 1)), the value of which is comparable even to those of commercially available electrolytes that are used in PEM fuel cells. In addition, continuous testing shows that PA(PhSO3H)2-PAN(3 : 1) possesses long-life reusability.
