Abstract:In order to improve various properties of medical titanium alloys, Ti-3Zr-2Sn-3Mo-25Nb titanium alloy specimens were subjected to microarc oxidation (BMAO) in 0.1 mol/l sodium tetraborate electrolyte to cover the substrate with a micro-nano double-graded structured coating. The effect of oxidation time on the microstructure, physical phase, hardness, corrosion resistance, and wettability of the micro-nano film layer was investigated. The results show that the microporous size of the film increases with the increase in oxidation time, and the hardness of the BMAO film increases with the increase in oxidation time; the corrosion resistance of the BMAO film is better than that of the substrate, and the self-corrosion potential is the largest at 14 min of oxidation time, reaching -0.1349 V, which is 65% higher than that of the substrate, and the self-corrosion current is the lowest, at 1.1376 x 10(-9) A cm(-2), which is one order of magnitude lower than that of the substrate; the micro-nano film layer exhibits superhydrophilicity, which increases and then decreases with time, and the contact angle is the smallest at 6 min of oxidation time, 4.4 degrees, which is one order of magnitude lower than that of the substrate, 73.75 degrees.

Abstract:The oxide films were prepared by thermal oxidation on the surfaces of Ti6Al7Nb(TAN) and Ti6Al4V(TAV) alloys and characterized by optical microscopy,Vickers hardness test,X-ray diffractometry(XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).The results indicate that the film on the surface of TAN is thinner than that on TAV and has stronger adhesion with substrate.The hardness of films on both alloys increase with elevating temperature or extending time at high temperature.However,due to the multilayered porous structure,the hardness decreases when temperature rises up to 1000℃ for TAN or 900℃ for TAV.The surface analysis of films oxidized for 1h under different temperatures shows that the oxidation behaviour of Nb is more sensitive to temperature than that of V.Both Nb and V play an important role in the oxidation process of TAN and TAV alloys,respectively.

Abstract:Micro-arc oxidation is a technique used to modify the surface of metals by anodic oxidation. The process changes the material's surface characteristics to improve its wear, corrosion, and tribocorrosion resistance. Additionally, the technique allows for incorporating elements that contribute to osseointegration when the material is intended for biomedical applications. The main objective of this study is to enhance the surface of the Ti-25Ta binary alloy, which has the best mechanical compatibility among the alloys of the Ti–Ta system, by using the micro-arc oxidation method. The surface treatment was performed to promote the incorporation of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, followed by heat treatments to modify the crystalline phases of the coating to increase the hardness of the oxide layer, improving adhesion and wear resistance. The structural and microstructural characterization, performed by X-ray diffraction and microscopy (scanning electron and confocal), showed that ceramic coatings are initially composed of TiO 2 (anatase and rutile) and calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ). Increasing the heat treatment temperature to 600 °C induced rutile formation. For temperatures above 600 °C, the calcination of the CaCO 3 compound occurs, forming calcium oxide and calcium titanate in the form of perovskite (CaTiO 3 ). Regarding the morphology, the high temperatures increased the crystallinity, decreased the number of surface pores and thickness of the MAO layer, and increased the hardness value of the coating, consequently improving the wear resistance of the Ti-25Ta alloy.

The structural changes and microstructures on the MAO surfaces were analyzed using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical composition to verify whether silver, copper, and zinc were incorporated via energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and surface characteristics such as wettability and hardness of the coatings were also investigated. From the EDS mapping results, it is observed that the MAO process was effective in incorporating the ions present in the electrolyte. Regarding X-ray diffraction patterns, the TiO2 phases formed in the Ti-25Ta alloy has a mixture of anatase and rutile, making the MAO surface hydrophilic. The Ag element surface is thicker than the films containing Cu and Zn, as the Ag ions have high electrical conductivity, accelerating the oxidation process during surface treatment. Regarding hardness, coating containing Cu have a higher hardness value.

Abstract:Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) is a surface modification technique used to improve the surface properties of titanium alloys, such as corrosion, wear resistance, and osseointegration. In addition to promoting the growth of a porous oxide coating on the sample’s surface, it is also possible to incorporate bioactive elements into this coating, such as calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, as well as elements with antimicrobial action, such as zinc. Thus, this study aimed at the surface modification of the β Ti-30Nb-5Mo alloy by the MAO method, incorporating calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc to improve osseointegration and promote bactericidal character in the produced coating. The results showed that the porosity, roughness, and crystallinity of the coating tend to increase with increasing Zn concentration in the electrolyte, while the contact angle decreases. The antimicrobial activity was promoted against the E. faecalis and P. aeruginosa bacteria strains and the C. albicans fungus. Incorporating Zn on the surface also did not negatively affect adiposetissue-derived mesenchymal stem cell differentiation, and promoted more significant growth of these cells on the samples’ surface.

Abstract:Investigation results of micro-arc coating on the (Ti-7Nb-6Al) alloy were presented. It has potential clinical value in applications such as dental implant, knee, and hip prostheses. An electrolyte solution of ( Na2CO3 + Na2SiO3). The micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique was employed for in situ oxidation of Ti-6Al-7Nb surface. The wettability of a porous TiO2 covering made up of anatase and rutile phases was investigated. The test findings revealed that the possibility of deposition of ceramics coatings on the surface of Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy by using voltages (400V )at different deposition times (7, 15, and 30) min. The results indicate that ceramics layer of titanium oxide (TiO2) which is formed during coating porous and homogenous distribution. The bioactive composition of the oxide layers can be suitable for use as advanced biomedical implants. The coatings also revealed an increased surface roughness, porosity, microhardness, surface wettability and corrosion resistance of the Ti-6Al-7Nb substrate reaches to (CR= 0.1114×10−3mpy) in Ringer’s solution and (CR= 1.03×10−3mpy) in Saliva’s solution with increased deposition time.

Abstract:Micro Arc Oxidation (MAO) is an electrochemical approach for the surface treatment usually applied on so called valve metals such as Al, Mg and Ti. MAO is usually carried out an aqueous electrolyte, which involves a bath cooling and leads to the creation of surface contained components originated in the electrolyte. In current work, we applied a different approach of ceramic surface formation on Ti alloy used in biomedical applications. Here, MAO process conducted in molten nitrate salt at 280 deg C. The developed surface morphology, chemical and phase composition, and corrosion resistance were investigated and described in the work.

Abstract:Medium energy (40--65 MeV) ..gamma.. rays following radiative capture of 50 MeV polarized protons on /sup 11/B were studied for the first time by using a NaI detector ensemble with good energy resolution and small background counts. Discrete ..gamma.. rays feeding the ground 0/sup +/, 4.44 MeV 2/sup +/, and 9.64 MeV 3/sup -/ states, and prominent ..gamma.. peaks feeding the 19 and 22 MeV excitations region in /sup 12/C were identified. The analyzing powers of the radiative capture were found to depend on the microscopic configurations of the final states.

Abstract:For bone implants, β‑titanium alloy is promising mainly due to its low modulus of elasticity; the disadvantage may be the insufficient wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant properties. Bulk β-Ti39Nb alloy and magnetron sputtered β-Ti39Nb alloy were surface modified by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique in an alkaline solution. The aim was to define in detail the relationships between the chemical composition of the surfaces, their morphology, and the tribological and corrosion properties. The structural properties, phase and chemical composition of the coating, tribological and corrosion properties were studied in detail using SEM, EDX, XRD, XPS and EDX analysis. The particles released during tribological measurements were evaluated using SEM/EDX particle analysis followed by statistical treatment of the particle parameters (material, size, area) using multiple factor analysis and principal component analysis. The results show that increased wear resistance was achieved for both magnetron-sputtered layers and bulk materials. The friction coefficient for the MAO-Al2O3 friction pair samples ranged from 0.5 to 0.6 in phosphate-buffered solution. For powder metallurgy-prepared bulk β-Ti39Nb, MAO represents an effective tool to reduce the high friction coefficient from 1.0 to 1.1 to values of 0.4–0.5. The results of the particle analysis confirm that with increasing MAO process time, there is an increase in the number of released particles with increased Si content, which correlates well with the results of tribological tests. The evaluated tribological parameters wear rate, track width, and the chemical elements Si and Ti have a significant weak positive correlation, confirming that the presence of these elements in MAO coatings affects the resulting tribological parameters. Multivariate analysis revealed the greatest correlation of the resulting particle composition with the tribological attributes and original material and, to a lesser extent, with the process time.

Abstract:Titanium alloy produced by selective laser melting (SLM) requires surface treatment to improve its bioactivity. In this study, Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) was applied on TC4 alloy produced by SLM with a homogeneous coating of microporous TiO2 and significant amounts of Ca and P. The microstructure, thickness, roughness, and composition of the MAO coating with different oxidation times were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The adhesion strength of the MAO coating was obtained by scratch testing. The corrosion behavior of the MAO coatings was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The bioactivity of the coatings was carried out by immersion test in simulated body fluid (SBF). The results showed that the thickness of the MAO coatings, roughness and pore size gradually increase as a function of the oxidation time, which at the same time increases the rutile phase constituent. The coating prepared by 15 min exhibited the best adhesive strength, which mainly consists of TiO2, CaO, CaHPO4 and Ca3(PO4)2. The corrosion resistance and bioactivity of MAO coatings could be improved by changing the oxidation time, and MAO coating formed at 15 min has the best corrosion resistance and bioactivity. The whole MAO process on SLM-produced TC4 alloy can be divided into four stages through “anodic oxidation → film puncturing → micro-arc oxidation → arc light stage” according to voltage change and microstructure evolution. In addition, a large amount of grain boundary interfacial area in SLM-produced TC4 alloy may participate in the MAO reaction to form a large number of discharge channels and share the total energy to decline energy density.

Abstract:The aim of this work was to explore the effect of microscopic surface topographies of the Ti-6Al-4 V alloy on the coating growth behaviour during the initial stages of micro-arc oxidation (MAO). Firstly, MAO treatments were carried out on the surfaces of Ti-6Al-4 V alloys with different surface morphologies for 5, 10 and 15 min respectively. Second, the effects of substrate topographies on the roughness, porosity, thickness, and microstructure of the coatings were studied. Then, the corrosion resistance of the MAO-treated titanium alloys was assessed by electrochemical analysis. Finally, the formation mechanisms and morphological results of the oxide layer were discussed and illustrated graphically. The results showed that the surface morphologies of the substrate affected the micro-arc discharge behaviour during the process of oxidation. Notably, rough areas on the substrate surface facilitated the breakdown of the passivation film, which was evidenced by the early appearance of plasma discharges in these areas. However, surface morphology with uneven distribution of pores observed in the oxide layer formed by the rough substrate. The coatings grown on the grooves were more porous than those grown in other areas, due to the non-uniformity of the micro-discharge on the rough substrate surface.

Abstract:Due to the presence of multi-principal elements, the multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) are supposed to undergo competing oxidation reactions during micro-arc oxidation (MAO). In this work, Ti–Nb–Zr medium entropy alloy (MEA, MAO-Free) was MAO-treated at various applied voltage. For Ti–Nb–Zr MEA treated at 250 V (MAO-250 V), the coating microstructure was characterized by amorphous oxides of Ti, Nb and Zr from the substrate and amorphous compounds of CaO, Ca(OH)2, SiO2 and CaSiO3 from the electrolyte, which distributed homogeneously in coating matrix. Different from the microstructure of MAO-250 V group, tetragonal-ZrO2 nano-crystals dispersed in amorphous coating matrix were noticed for that treated at 300 V (MAO-300 V). For specimen treated at 350 V (MAO-350 V), the coating matrix exhibited higher crystallinity by composing of major tetragonal-ZrO2 and minor rutile-TiO2, with the presence of nano-sized amorphous regions. The pore size, porosity, surface roughness and hydrophilicity of coatings increased with the increase of applied voltage. An order of MAO-300 V > MAO-250 V > MAO-Free > MAO-350 V group was identified for the wear resistance. Moreover, the MAOed coatings exhibited comparable corrosion resistance and cyto-compatibility to MAO-Free group. Together, the results indicate that the MAO-300 V group with favorable wear resistance, corrosion resistance and cyto-compatibility is promising for biomedical applications.

Abstract:This paper reported a surface modification method to improve corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of a Ti3Zr2Sn3Mo25Nb alloy (named as TLM). A 100-μm-thick layer with an average grain size of 70 nm was created on the alloy surface through sliding friction treatment (SFT), followed by a micro-arc oxidation treatment (MAO) to create a porous coating. Phase composition, morphology, structural characteristics, and elemental characteristics of the MAO coating were inspected by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Corrosion resistance of the MAO coating was tested by electrochemical method, and the biocompatibility of the MAO coating was evaluated by cell adhesion and proliferation, and protein adsorption tests. It has found that the surface morphology and chemical composition of the MAO coating produced on the SFT surface (NG-MAO) were not significantly different from those of the MAO coating formed on the original TLM substrate without SFT (CG-MAO). However, the corrosion current density of the NG-MAO coating in 0.9% NaCl solution (PS) and simulated body fluid (SBF) solution decreased 43.4 and 46.7%, respectively, as compared to the CG-MAO coating. The polarization resistance of the NG-MAO coating was also 122% higher than that of the CG-MAO coating in PS. And the protein adsorption capacity and cell proliferation have been significantly increased on the NG-MAO coating compared to its counterpart, the CG-MAO coating.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) is a versatile surface-modification method that promotes higher wear and corrosion resistance, osseointegration, and biological activity to titanium alloys' surfaces. This study aimed to modify the surface of a recently developed metastable β Ti alloy, which exhibits more favorable mechanical properties for implant applications compared to some commercial Ti alloys, by incorporating Ag into the coatings to introduce a bactericidal function to the surface. The Ti-30Nb-5Mo alloy, with lower elastic modulus, was treated by the MAO method using electrolyte solutions containing calcium acetate, magnesium acetate, β-glycerol phosphate, and varied concentrations of silver nitrate (1.5 mM, 2.5 mM, and 3.5 mM). With an increase in the concentration of silver ions in the electrolyte, the galvanostatic period during the MAO process decreased from 1.7 s to 0.5 s. The Ca/P ratio increased from 0.72 up to 1.36. X-ray diffraction showed that the MAO coatings were formed by rutile and anatase TiO2 main phases and calcium phosphates. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis detected the presence of amorphous Nb2O5, CaCO3, and MgCO3, and metallic and oxide forms of Ag. The increase in Ag in the electrolyte decreased the coating thickness (from 14.2 μm down to 10.0 μm), increased the contact angle (from 37.6° up to 57.4°), and slightly increased roughness (from 0.64 μm up to 0.79 μm). The maximum inhibition of Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans strains growth was of 43%, 43%, and 61%, respectively. The Ag did not negatively affect the differentiation of adipose-tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells. Therefore, the treatment of the surface of the innovative Ti-30Nb-5Mo alloy by the MAO method was effective in producing a noncytotoxic porous coating with bactericidal properties and improved osseointegration capabilities.

Abstract:To explore the effect of calcium concentration in the electrolyte solution on the physicochemical properties and biocompatibility of coatings formed by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) on titanium surfaces.The surfaces of pure titanium plates were modified by MAO in an electrolytic solution containing calcium acetate (CA; C4H6CaO4) at concentrations of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, or 0.3 M and β-glycerophosphate disodium salt pentahydrate (β-GP; C3H7Na2O6P·5H2O) at a fixed concentration of 0.02 M. Surface topography, elemental characteristics, phase composition, and roughness were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction, and a surface roughness tester, respectively. To assess the cytocompatibility and osteoinductivity of the surfaces, MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts were cultured on the surfaces in vitro, and cell morphology, adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation were observed.The porous MAO coating was composed primarily of TiO2 rutile and anatase. The amount of TiO2 rutile, the Ca/P ratio, and the surface roughness of the MAO coating increased with increasing CA concentration in the electrolyte solution. Ca3(PO4)2, CaCO3, and CaTiO3 were formed on MAO-treated surfaces prepared with CA concentrations of 0.2 and 0.3 M. Cell proliferation and differentiation increased with increasing CA concentration, with MC3T3-E1 cells exhibiting favorable morphologies for bone–implant integration.MAO coating improves the surface characteristics and cytocompatibility of titanium for osseointegration. Higher CA concentration in the MAO electrolyte solution has a positive effect on the surface properties, chemical composition, and cell response.
Coating Formation on Ti-6Al-4V Alloy by Micro Arc Oxidation in Molten Salt

Abstract:Micro Arc Oxidation (MAO) is an electrochemical surface treatment process to produce oxide protective coatings on some metals. MAO is usually conducted in an aqueous electrolyte, which requires an intensive bath cooling and leads to the formation of a coating containing impurities that originate in the electrolyte. In the current work, we applied an alternative ceramic coating to the Ti-6Al-4V alloy using the MAO process in molten nitrate salt at a temperature of 280 °C. The obtained coating morphology, chemical and phase composition, and corrosion resistance were investigated and described. The obtained results showed that a coating of 2.5 µm was formed after 10 min of treatment, containing titanium oxide and titanium‒aluminum intermetallic phases. Morphological examination indicated that the coating is free of cracks and contains round, homogeneously distributed pores. Corrosion resistance testing indicated that the protective oxide coating on Ti alloy is 20 times more resistive than the untreated alloy.
Influence of titanium carbide particles on the characteristics of microarc oxidation layer on Ti6Al4V alloy

Abstract:The Microarc Oxidation (MAO) layer on titanium alloy was mainly composed of TiO2, and there were some defects, such as holes and cracks, which made the performance of the MAO layer not ideal. To enhance the properties of the MAO layer, titanium carbide (TiC) particles were added to the electrolyte of a phosphate–silicate system as an additive. Consequently, the MAO layers containing the TiC phase on Ti6Al4V alloy were produced. The MAO process, composition, microstructure, and hardness of the MAO layer were comprehensively analyzed. Their frictional performance was assessed under reciprocating friction conditions without lubrication. The findings suggested that added TiC particles in the electrolyte played a significant role in creating the MAO layer, enhancing its thickness. The electrolyte without TiC particles produced an MAO layer primarily composed of TiO2 in two different mineral forms (rutile and anatase). Adding TiC particles resulted in the presence of TiC within the MAO layer, thereby facilitating the formation of a reinforced oxide layer. This addition also led to an improvement in the densification of the layer and a reduction in porosity. Notably, corrosion resistance testing indicated that incorporating 6 g/L TiC into the electrolyte resulted in superior performance compared with that obtained from the base electrolyte alone by achieving 1.4 times higher corrosion resistance. Moreover, a hardness value of 690 HV for the MAO layer was attained at a content level of 9 g/L TiC, demonstrating a significant 65% enhancement compared to the base oxide layer. This finding also demonstrated significantly enhanced friction property with a wear-volume reduction to 0.81 mm3. The findings on the relationship between the preparation of the MAO layer and its structure and properties can provide valuable guidance for designing and preparing the MAO layer.

Abstract:Implants subjected to tribocorrosion release metallic ions and solid wear debris, which can cause a peri-implant disease, bone loss, and eventually implant loosening. TiO 2 coatings have a wide application range owing to their biocompatibility. In this study, the Ti–29Nb–13Ta–7.1 Zr alloy was fabricated using powder metallurgy technique. The samples were electrochemically oxidized to produce self-standing TiO 2 nanotubular arrays followed by annealing for 1 h at 450 °C to improve their crystallinity. The prepared TiO 2 coatings were characterized by SEM, X-ray diffraction, and EDX, and the wettability, tribomechanical characteristics, and corrosion behavior of bio-functionalized TiO 2 nanotubes were investigated. Atomic force microscopy observations were conducted to examine wear scars, and the wear volume was measured via 2D profilometry. Microhardness and nanoindentation tests were performed to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of TiO 2 nanotubes such as microhardness, nanohardness, and modulus of elasticity. The thickness and diameter of the observed TiO 2 nanotubes are 2 μm and 90.94 nm, respectively. The obtained results revealed that the deposition of a biofunctionalized Ti/TiO 2 nanotube layer enhanced the hydrophilicity, tribomechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of the Ti–29Nb–13Ta–7.1Zr alloy. The COF of Ti alloy was 0.51 and it decreased to 0.28 after anodization and annealing at 450 °C. The contact angle of the Ti sample was 79.9° and it decreased to 45.6° after annealing at 850 °C. However, after the anodic oxidation and annealing at 450 °C, the contact angle decreased to 45.6°.

Abstract:Titanium (Ti) and its alloys are widely recognized as preferred materials for bone implants due to their superior mechanical properties. However, their natural surface bio-inertness can hinder effective tissue integration. To address this challenge, micro-arc oxidation (MAO) has emerged as an innovative electrochemical surface modification technique. Its benefits range from operational simplicity and cost-effectiveness to environmental compatibility and scalability. Furthermore, the distinctive MAO process yields a porous topography that bestows versatile functionalities for biological applications, encompassing osteogenesis, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. In this review, we undertake an examination of the underlying mechanism governing the MAO process, scrutinize the multifaceted influence of various factors on coating performance, conduct an extensive analysis of the development of diverse biological functionalities conferred by MAO coatings, and discuss the practical application of MAO in implants. Finally, we provide insights into the limitations and potential pathways for further development of this technology in the field of bone implantation.
