Abstract:Parent-targeted oral health awareness campaigns should place a strong emphasis on issues like the value of deciduous teeth and how to treat them, frequent dental checkups, and dietary habits. The current study's objective is to evaluate parents' knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes regarding their children's oral health and how those factors affect the prevalence of dental caries in 5- to 10-year-old children in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Parents of school-aged children aged 5 to 10 who came to our hospital were the subjects of a cross-sectional questionnaire survey. The study included 209 children in all, together with their parents. Utilizing DMFT and the deft index, clinical examinations of children were conducted. Parents were given a self-designed questionnaire to evaluate their understanding, attitudes, and practices about their children's dental health. SPSS version 24 was used for the statistical analysis. A p-value of 0.05 or less was regarded as statistically significant when using the ANOVA test to examine the relationship between dental caries status and KAP. The mean deft and DMFT were 6.46 ± 1.6 and 1.56 ± 2.8, respectively. Most parents (72.2%) demonstrated adequate knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. Parental KAP and mean DMFT/DEFT did not differ significantly. The study's participants had reasonable KAP for the oral health of their children. The significance of deciduous teeth and their treatment, frequent dental appointments, and dietary behaviors are among the knowledge gaps in oral health.
Socioeconomic Factors Associated With the Risk and Prevalence of Dental Caries and Dental Treatment Trends in Children: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) Data, 2016-2019

Abstract:Introduction In the United States of America, early childhood caries (ECC) is the most common chronic childhood disease of early onset, with dental caries being the most prevalent chronic disease among children aged 6-19 years. Children without an established medical home, from low-income households, and who are uninsured have historically shown to be prone to dental caries and attribute to higher health care costs. Early recognition of these risk factors by a pediatrician helps prevent the development of medical and psychosocial complications in the child. Methods The cross-sectional data of the prevalence of dental caries and dental treatment trends in children and three socioeconomic risk factors, namely establishment of a medical home, household income, and child's health insurance, were accessed from the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) for the years 2016-2019. The association of the risk factors with the prevalence of dental caries and with the prevalence of dental treatment were analyzed using two-sample proportion tests and chi-square (χ<sup>2</sup>) tests for dichotomous categorical variables and non-dichotomous categorical variables, respectively. Standardized residuals were calculated and analyzed as well. Furthermore, the odds ratios were calculated and utilized to quantify the influence of each category on the highly associated category with having teeth decay and not receiving dental treatment under each socioeconomic risk factor. Results The results of this study revealed that the three socioeconomic factors considered have statistically significant associations with tooth decay and dental treatment. The prevalence and associative risk of tooth decay and untreated caries were the highest in the children without a medical home. Additionally, the odds of having tooth decay was >50% higher for the children from the lowest household income category (0-99% federal poverty level [FPL]) compared to those from the high household income categories (200-399% FPL and >400% FPL). Public insurance coverage was associated with the highest prevalence of dental caries and not receiving fluoride treatment. Furthermore, the likelihood of not availing dental treatment is nearly two times or more higher for the uninsured children than children having public insurance, or private insurance, or a combination of both. Conclusion Our study findings reveal that children belonging to certain socioeconomic risk categories are at a higher risk of developing dental caries and not receiving dental treatment. As a consequence, the study implies that increased support and expansion of public health insurance will benefit oral health care for the children. Pediatricians play an integral part in developing a medical home for the child by providing preventative dental care and establishing continued care through dental referrals.
[The relationship between dental caries of deciduous teeth and anxiety of mothers associated with child-care]

Abstract:Aim: The incidence of caries in children is closely related to daily habits and may also be influenced markedly by a mother's attitude to child-care. For example, if a mother has a mental health problem such as child-care anxiety, this may prevent her obtaining advice on the daily health requirements of her children including the need to brush the teeth regularly. It is therefore important that mothers receive guidance in order to minimize the incidence of caries. This study examined the effect of child-care anxiety in mothers on the prevalence of caries in 3-year-old children. Methods: The subjects were 503 pairs of mothers and their children who attended a check-up at a community health center in Gifu City when the children were aged 3-years. The mothers answered a questionnaire about child-care, while the children had a dental examination and caries activity test (Cariostat). The prevalence of caries and the Cariostat score were examined by binomial logistic regression analysis. The relationship between child-care anxiety of the mothers and children's caries or Cariostat score were analyzed using Covariance Analysis, that incorporated additional multiple indicator models including snack behavior, social-support and food faddism of the children. Results: 1. The rate of caries disease increased with high Cariostat scores and was statistically significant at scores greater than 2.0. 2. Covariance analysis demonstrated both the models of children's caries and Cariostat score provided a good fit to the actual data, the former model having a GFI = 0.951 and RMSEA = 0.046, and the latter a GFI = 0.952 and RMSEA = 0.046. 3. It was found that anxiety over child-care directly affected snack behavior, while itself being influenced directly by both social-support and food fads of the children. 4. Snack behavior influenced Cariostat score, but not the prevalence of child caries. Conclusions: We suggest it is necessary to provide guidance to mothers with a background of child-care anxiety in order to prevent a high rate of caries in their children. It may be possible to detect mothers with child-care anxiety that leads to bad snack behavior by obtaining information on the child's social-support and food fads. Our study showed that offering social support was an effective means of preventing habits that may predispose to the development of dental caries. Furthermore, we found the Cariostat score was an effective test for assessing the influence of child-care on caries incidence.

Abstract:Aim: To compare how parents' attitudes, knowledge, and sociodemographic characteristics influence untreated early childhood caries in infants and preschoolers in Brazil and Colombia. Background: Dental caries is a prevalent chronic disease affecting children worldwide. However, little research has explored the connection between parents' knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about oral health and the occurrence of dental caries in their children's primary teeth. Materials: Oral health information was evaluated in children aged 3 to 5 years with a questionnaire covering sociodemographic and socioeconomic variables, family information and questions about health knowledge and child's and parents' oral health. In addition, oral examinations have been carried out to determine the prevalence of untreated dental caries. A p-value of 0.05 and 95% reliability level were considered statistically significant. Conclusion: Untreated caries in infants and preschoolers are influenced by socioeconomic status, maternal education, sugar consumption, oral hygiene, and parents' beliefs about primary dentition.

Abstract:BackgroundDental caries is a major public health problem in many countries. Since the last territority-wide dental survey of Hong Kong preschool children was conducted in 2001, a survey to update the information is necessary. This study aimed to describe the dental caries experience of preschool children in Hong Kong and factors affecting their dental caries status.MethodsA stratified random sample of children from seven kindergartens in Hong Kong was surveyed in 2009. Ethical approval from IRB and parental consent was obtained. Clinical examinations of the children were performed by two calibrated examiners using disposable dental mirrors, an intra-oral LED light and ball-ended periodontal probes. A questionnaire to investigate possible explanatory factors for caries status was completed by the children’s parents. Caries experience was recorded using the dmft index. Multifactor-ANOVA was used to study the relationship between dental caries experience, and the background and oral health-related behaviours of the children.ResultsSeven hundred children (53% boys), mean age 5.3 ± 0.7 years were examined. The mean dmft score of the surveyed children was 2.2 and 51% of them had no caries experience (dmft = 0). Most (>95%) of the decayed teeth were untreated. Statistically significant correlations were found between dental caries experience of the children and their oral health-related habits, family income, parental education level and parental dental knowledge.ConclusionsEarly childhood dental caries was prevalent among the preschool children in Hong Kong. Their caries experience was associated with their oral health-related behaviours, socio-economic background, and parental education and dental knowledge.

Abstract:(1) Background: Childhood obesity and dental caries are common chronic conditions with multiple contributing factors, linked to negative health consequences and significant expenses in healthcare. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between obesity and dental caries in school-aged children; (2) Methods: Data from 3323 6–12-year-old children from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2016 were analyzed. The NHANES was conducted at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States. The CDC standard was used to define obesity. Dental caries was measured during clinical examinations and summarized using DMFT scores for caries experience and prevalence (dt > 0) for untreated caries. The study examined the correlation between obesity and dental caries using regression models that considered demographic variables, family socioeconomic status, and the child's intake of added sugars as controlling factors; (3) Results: The association between obesity and dental caries was not significant in either unadjusted or adjusted models; and (4) Conclusion: The data indicate that untreated caries and caries experiences are not directly correlated with childhood obesity. There are, however, common causes of poor dental health and childhood obesity: culture, poverty level, lifestyle, and family traditions and habits. Dentists must be aware of factors influencing the development of childhood caries so that they can intervene as early as possible.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Parents have an important role in making decisions about their children's oral health. The purpose of the authors' study was to determine parental perceptions of their children's oral health status and factors correlated with these perceptions of health.METHODS: The authors analyzed data for 3,424 children (2-5 years of age) from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. They based the dependent variable on a question asked of primary caregivers: "How would you describe the condition of [child's name]'s natural teeth?" Explanatory variables included demographic variables, dental visits, perception of child's general health, need for dental care and presence of tooth caries.RESULTS: Eighty-nine percent of parents rated their child's oral health as excellent, very good or good, and 11 percent rated it as fair or poor (mean = 2.7 on a five-point scale, with 1 being excellent and 5 being poor). Tooth caries, perceived need for dental cleaning and treatment, lower income and poorer general health perceptions were associated with poorer parental ratings.CONCLUSIONS: Actual disease and perceived need are associated significantly with parents' perceptions of their children's oral health.PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Understanding parents' perceptions of their children's oral health and factors that motivate these perceptions can help dentistry overcome barriers that parents encounter in accessing dental care for their children.

Abstract:Objective This cross-sectional study aims to assess parents' knowledge, attitude, and practices toward the oral health of their children with primary dentition. Patients and methods The study was performed in the Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University. Data were obtained through 301 questionnaires translated from English to Arabic, for the assessment of the parents' knowledge, attitude, and practices scores and via clinical examination of the children for the assessment of caries prevalence by calculation of their dmf scores. Results The majority of parents (90%) had adequate knowledge scores with a significantly strong negative correlation to dmf scores of their children. For attitude score, 100% of parents reported adequate attitude score, with insignificant weak negative correlation to dmf scores of their children. Finally, the practice score was adequate in only 44.52% of parents, with a significantly strong negative correlation to dmf scores of the children. Conclusions The majority of parents had adequate knowledge and attitude, although having inadequate practice. The mean dmf score of the children was significantly affected by parents' knowledge, but weakly affected by their beliefs and attitudes. The poor practice of parents revealed in the present study had a strong negative influence on their children's caries prevalence.
[Difference Between Dental Caries and Oral Health Behavior of Family in Primary Dentition].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the dental caries status in the primary dentition of 5-year-old children and analyze the difference of oral health behavior of family between urban and rural in Liaoning province.METHODS:The representative samples were selected by multi-stage, stratified and random sampling from Liaoning province. Dental caries of 792 children at five years were recorded according to World Health Organization criteria. The questionnaries were finished by 396 parents of the children and analyzed the oral health behavior of family in urban and rural by chi-squre test.RESULTS:The prevalence and dmft of dental caries of 5-year-old children in Liaoning province was 73.86% and 4.38, respectively. The prevalence of dental caries in 5-year-old children was 64.14% in urban and 83.59% in rural. There was significant difference on the consumption of sweets, chocolate, water with sugar and beverage between the children in urban and rural. More urban children had good toothbrushing behavior such as the time of beginning brush tooth, the frequency of brushing and daily use of fluoridated toothpaste compared with the rural children. The parents in urban had high level of education and incomes and there were more children in urban have regular dental visit pattern than in rural.CONCLUSION:This study has shown that there is an urgent need for the implementation of a systematic education on oral health behavior of family on rural children in Liaoning province.

Abstract:Sodium propionate (2.5 mmol/kg) was infused rapidly via a jugular vein into each of 13 multiparous Holstein cows at 7 wk postpartum for observation of clearance of propionate. Associated concentration changes of acetate and glucose in blood plasma and glucagon and insulin in blood serum were quantified. This dose elevated concentrations of propionate, which declined subsequently at an exponential rate (.108 min-1). Concentrations of glucagon and insulin were increased in the sampling immediately following infusion, yet subsequent decline of insulin concentrations acted to decrease the molar ratio of insulin:glucagon as propionate returned to preinfusion concentrations. Analysis of sample means disclosed a negative correlation -.82 between glucose and molar ratio of insulin:glucagon. These experimental observations suggest that a supraphysiological dose of propionate has an immediate effect on the pancreas to alter endocrine secretion in the lactating cow.

Abstract:Aim: This study aimed to investigate the associations between feeding and oral hygiene practices during the first year of life and caries prevalence in preschool children. Materials and method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 420 children between the age-group of 3-5 years in Navi Mumbai, India. Dental caries experience was recorded using WHO criteria. A validated questionnaire with 34 questions was used for collecting information regarding feeding and oral hygiene practices. The data collected were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Chi-square test. Results: Caries prevalence was high and statistically significant (p < 0.05) among those who were breastfed, fell asleep with a bottle in the mouth, fed with additional sugar in bottled milk, those who had a frequent sweet intake, and where infant's teeth were not cleaned soon after eruption. Conclusion: Determining the role of feeding practices on early childhood caries and intervention during early childhood seems to be the most appropriate action to ensure healthy dental habits throughout life. Clinical significance: A future direction for dentists to target preventive interventions in early childhood and incorporate cariogenicity of frequent infant feeding into sound recommendations for parents and caregivers. Are we adequately managing the oral health needs of children: a survey of the experience of general dentists and self-assessed confidence in pediatric dentistry

Abstract:Childhood caries is a public health problem with a significant burden on the community. The specialist dental workforce cannot adequately manage all treatment needs in children. Therefore, the general dental community remains critical in delivering care to children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the self-rated confidence of general practitioners in treating children. A cross-sectional survey was designed that involved general dentists in various primary care centers in Jordan. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire about their experience and self-perceived level of confidence in performing various procedures in children using the Likert scale. Descriptive statistics, t-tests and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for data analysis. A total of 150 general dentists completed the questionnaire. The overall confidence score was high (3/4). Most respondents (86.7%) reported high confidence in providing prophylaxis and preventive treatment. The lowest level of confidence was reported for dental trauma and interceptive orthodontics. No statistically significant gender disparity was found except for the management of dental trauma in which males were significantly more confident than females. Regarding years of experience, confidence levels in dental trauma management were significantly higher among dentists with 5-10 years of experience compared to the recently graduated and the longest qualified dentists (p = 0.008). Similarly, for interceptive orthodontics, participants with 5-10 years of practice were significantly more confident compared to dentists in the other groups (p = 0.021). One-third of participants (30.1%) were not willing to treat children and considered them disruptive to their practice. Overall, This study revealed low levels of confidence in dental trauma management and interceptive orthodontics in children. Modification of dental curricula to increase clinical exposure should positively reflect on future levels of confidence. Strategies should be implemented to encourage general dentists to treat children to ensure equitable access for all.
Important considerations for radiochromic film dosimetry with flatbed CCD scanners and EBT GAFCHROMIC® film.

Abstract:In this study, we present three significant artifacts that have the potential to negatively impact the accuracy and precision of film dosimetry measurements made using GAFCHROMIC® EBT radiochromic film when read out with CCD flatbed scanners. Films were scanned using three commonly employed instruments: a Macbeth TD932 spot densitometer, an Epson Expression 1680 CCD array scanner, and a Microtek ScanMaker i900 CCD array scanner. For the two scanners we assessed the variation in optical density (OD) of GAFCHROMIC EBT film with scanning bed position, angular rotation of the film with respect to the scan line direction, and temperature inside the scanner due to repeated scanning. Scanning uniform radiochromic films demonstrated a distinct bowing effect in profiles in the direction of the CCD array with a nonuniformity of up to 17%. Profiles along a direction orthogonal to the CCD array demonstrated a 7% variation. A strong angular dependence was found in measurements made with the flatbed scanners; the effect could not be reproduced with the spot densitometer. An IMRT quality assurance film was scanned twice rotating the film 90° between the scans. For films scanned on the Epson scanner, up to 12% variation was observed in unirradiated EBT films rotated between 0° and 90°, which decreased to approximately 8% for EBT films irradiated to 300cGy. Variations of up to 80% were observed for films scanned with the Microtek scanner. The scanners were found to significantly increase the film temperature with repeated scanning. Film temperature between 18 and 33°C caused OD changes of approximately 7%. Considering these effects, we recommend adherence to a strict scanning protocol that includes: maintaining the orientation of films scanned on flatbed scanners, limiting scanning to the central portion of the scanner bed, and limiting the number of consecutive scans to minimize changes in OD caused by film heating.

Abstract:Introduction Dental caries continues to be a public healthcare problem due to its high prevalence and morbidity. It was proposed to evaluate caries indicators in relation to healthcare access and hygienic‐dietary habits in Spanish preschoolers. Materials and Methods A cross‐sectional study was carried out on a random sample consisting of 343 patients ranging from 3 to 5 years of age in the primary care setting, the main measurements were: dental care access, hygienic‐dietary habits, and caries registration according to WHO criteria. Results The prevalence of caries was 35.3% and mean ± standard deviation (SD) dft was 1.51 ± 2.93. Preschoolers who had ever visited the dentist had a higher dft occurrence than those who had never attended the dentist. The lower prevalence of caries was significantly associated with the frequency of two daily brushings versus non‐daily brushing (p = 0.007; 25.3% vs. 47.1%) and was 10.7% lower in patients who had the habit of night brushing (p = 0.041). The consumption of sugary liquids between meals implied a higher dft index. Conclusions The high prevalence of early childhood caries and the dental care access associated with poor oral health suggest the need to implement a multidisciplinary oral healthcare program that involves both healthcare and dental healthcare professionals in Primary Health Care Units without forgetting the participation of the community and local administrations.

Abstract:Objective. To study the structure of the dental status of children aged 1 to 6 years. To identify gender differences in the rates of dental morbidity in children of early and preschool age. Materials and methods. To achieve this goal, a cross-sectional epidemiological study (cross-sectional studies) was conducted to study the dental morbidity of the Moscow child population aged 1 to 6 years. Clinical research methods were carried out to determine the dental status of the subjects. The received materials were processed statistically using the Statistica software. For statistical analysis of the prevalence of caries depending on age, the 2 criterion was used for contingency tables. To analyze the relationship between the prevalence of caries among boys and girls, Pearson’s 2 test was used with Yates’ correction for continuity. Categorical variables are presented as absolute and relative frequencies. Results. An analysis of the data obtained as a result of a cross-sectional epidemiological study (cross-sectional studies) of the children’s population of Moscow aged 1 to 6 years showed that the need for oral cavity sanation increases with age, the rate of previously sanitized children in different age periods are changing, there is a decrease in the rate of natural sanation. The prevalence of caries increases as children grow older. A statistically significant dependence of the prevalence of caries on the age group was revealed (2=55.86, df=5, p<0.001). Absolute and relative (%) caries prevalence rates are higher in girls in all age groups and lower in boys. Comparative Evaluation of Total Antioxidant Capacity and pH of Saliva in Children with and without Early Childhood Caries

Abstract:Background: Early childhood caries (ECC), a type of tooth decay that affects preschool children, is a complex chronic disease resulting from an imbalance of multiple risk factors and protective factors of tooth decay, over time. The antioxidant system in saliva is one of its defense mechanisms against disease agents. The pH of saliva also affects the integrity of the oral cavity, hence caries susceptibility. Objective: The study assessed and compared the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and pH of saliva in children with and without ECC. Methods: Unstimulated whole saliva, using the passive drool method was obtained from children with and without ECC, matched for age and gender. The samples were analyzed for TAC using the phosphomolybdenum assay technique, and pH with a hand-held digital pH meter. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21. Association between categorical variables was determined using Chi-square, while analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the means. The level of significance (p-value) was set at 5% (0.05). Results: A total of 68 children were examined (34 with ECC and 34 without ECC). The mean TAC in the ECC group was (0.53± 0.2) which was higher than the mean TAC of (0.36± 0.1) in the group without ECC. The mean pH (6.17±0.5) in the ECC group was lower than the mean pH (6.74± 0.5) in the caries-free group. The difference was statistically significant, p value<0.001. Conclusion: The saliva samples of children with ECC contained higher mean TAC and lower pH values compared to those without, who had lower mean TAC and higher pH values. This suggests a relationship between antioxidant production and cariogenesis. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between TAC and the pH of saliva in children with ECC.

Abstract:The goal of this study was to describe medical providers' fluoride-related beliefs and practices, experiences with fluoride-hesitant caregivers, and barriers to incorporating oral health activities into their practice. In this cross-sectional study, we specifically tested the hypothesis of whether these factors differed between pediatric and family medicine providers. A 39-item online survey was administered to a convenience sample of pediatric and family medicine providers in Washington state and Ohio (U.S.A.). Responses to the fluoride survey were compared between pediatric and family medicine providers with a chi-square test (α = 0.05). Of the 354 study participants, 45% were pediatric providers and 55% were family medicine providers. About 61.9% of providers believed fluoridated water was highly effective at preventing tooth decay while only 29.1% believed prescription fluoride supplements were highly effective. Nearly all providers recommend over-the-counter fluoride toothpaste (87.3%), 44.1% apply topical fluoride in clinic, and 30.8% prescribe fluoride supplements. Most providers reported fluoride hesitancy was a small problem or not a problem (82.5%) and the most common concerns patients raise about fluoride were similar to those raised about vaccines. Lack of time was the most commonly reported barrier to incorporating oral health into practice, which was more commonly reported by family medicine providers than pediatric providers (65.6% vs. 50.3%; p = .005). Pediatric and family medicine providers have early and frequent access to children before children visit a dentist. Improving the use of fluorides through children's medical visits could improve pediatric oral health and reduce oral health inequities, especially for vulnerable populations at increased risk for tooth decay.

Abstract:BACKGROUND In the United Kingdom, child maltreatment is an area of increased awareness and concern. AIM To compare the dental health of children subject to child protection plans with controls. DESIGN Children had to be aged between two and 11 years, medically healthy, and subject either to a child protection plan or attending the paediatric outpatient orthopaedic or general surgery clinics (control group). All children had a standardized oral examination. RESULTS Seventy-nine children were examined in each group. Children with child protection plans had statistically higher levels of primary tooth decay than controls (mean dmft 3.82 and 2.03, Mann-Whitney U test P = 0.002). After adjusting for socioeconomic status, the incidence rate ratios for the occurrence of dental caries in the primary dentition in children with a child protection plan was 1.76 (95% CI: 1.44-2.15) relative to the controls. There was no statistical difference in the levels of permanent tooth decay between the study and control groups (mean DMFT 0.71 and 0.30, respectively). The care index was significantly lower (P = 0.008, Mann-Whitney U test) in the study group (1.69%) compared to the control group (6.02%). CONCLUSIONS Children subject to child protection plans had significantly higher levels of dental caries in the primary dentition.

Abstract:Purpose: Dental health is associated with the growth and development, physical or psychological, of children. Although numerous preventive measures are available, dental caries among primary schoolchildren remains a public health concern in China. Understanding the disparity of children's dental health between rural and urban areas in China could provide further insight into the prevention of caries. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the oral health of pupils aged 6-12 years in Pudong District (Shanghai) and Lichuan (Jiangxi Province) in China. A questionnaire survey was performed among children's guardians to identify the potential risk factors for childhood dental caries. Results: A total of 1922 primary schoolchildren were included in this study, with 815 from Pudong and 1107 from Lichuan. The mean age of children from Pudong was 8.57 (SD = 1.61), which was statistically significantly lower than their counterpart from Lichuan (9.36 ± 1.75). The prevalence of caries in Pudong and Lichuan was 63.4% and 75.0%, respectively. Statistically significant differences of demographical and behavioural features were observed between schoolchildren in Pudong and Lichuan. In general, Lichuan children had a higher caries risk compared with their Pudong counterparts (OR = 3.43, 95%CI 2.65-4.28). Moreover, the non-parental caregivers, low family income, low parental educational level, as well as bad dietary habits, were identified as risk factors for caries. Conclusions: Childhood caries in the rural area was far more severe than that in the urban area. This disparity was determined by several factors such as the high proportion of left-behind children in the rural area (e.g. children who remain in rural regions of China while their parents leave to work in urban areas). Our government should put the prevention of caries among rural children at a higher priority in the near future to narrow the gap between rural and urban areas.
