Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have recently gained increasing attention as promising alternatives to conventional water and wastewater treatment technologies. As an AOP, there has been a growing interest in UV/chlorine due to its multiple disinfection modes and ability to maintain chlorine residuals in drinking water distribution systems. Compared to the popular UV/H2O2 AOP treatment process, UV/chlorine AOP possesses several advantages including a higher radical production efficiency and a lower power demand. The process has recently been applied for the degradation of a wide range of natural and synthetic organic as well as inorganic compounds including pharmaceutical and personal care products, natural organic matter, herbicides and insecticides, taste and odor, and different types of water and wastewaters. The focus of the present work is to review and evaluate the efficiency of the UV/chlorine process on the oxidation of these pollutants. A critical overview is provided of the fundamentals of UV/chlorine, controlling factors of the process performance, and a comparison with other UV-based AOPs. The formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), one of the concerns associated with UV/chlorine treatment, is discussed and strategies to tackle this obstacle are provided for future studies and applications.

Abstract:Contamination of water by toxic and/or recalcitrant species has great environmental impacts. In this context, Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) - technologies that principally use the hydroxyl radical (HO●) for oxidation - have emerged as promising alternatives in treating urban and industrial wastewaters. This study reviewed the literature on POAs and presented data regarding the efficiency of these processes in pollutant degradation, comparing the theoretical reasoning and its industrial applications. The fundamentals and major applications of AOPs (chemical, photochemical, electrochemical, sonochemical and ozone-based processes), as well as their advantages and disadvantages, are described in this review. AOPs have been considered an effective alternative from a technical, economic and environmental viewpoint for the degradation of pollutants in effluents and industrial wastewater, despite having limitations such as high cost of available energy sources, development of new low-cost catalytic materials and construction of full-scale reactors. It is greatly important to the industrial application of AOPs to optimize the effectiveness of these factors.
Formation and control of disinfection byproducts and toxicity during reclaimed water chlorination: A review.

Abstract:Chlorination is essential to the safety of reclaimed water; however, this process leads to concern regarding the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and toxicity. This study reviewed the formation and control strategies for DBPs and toxicity in reclaimed water during chlorination. Both regulated and emerging DBPs have been frequently detected in reclaimed water during chlorination at a higher level than those in drinking water, indicating they pose a greater risk to humans. Luminescent bacteria and Daphnia magna acute toxicity, anti-estrogenic activity and cytotoxicity generally increased after chlorination because of the formation of DBPs. Genotoxicity by umu-test and estrogenic activity were decreased after chlorination because of destruction of toxic chemicals. During chlorination, water quality significantly impacted changes in toxicity. Ammonium tended to attenuate toxicity changes by reacting with chlorine to form chloramine, while bromide tended to aggravate toxicity changes by forming hypobromous acid. During pretreatment by ozonation and coagulation, disinfection byproduct formation potential (DBPFP) and toxicity formation potential (TFP) occasionally increase, which is accompanied by DOC removal; thus, the decrease of DOC was limited to indicate the decrease of DBPFP and TFP. It is more important to eliminate the key fraction of precursors such as hydrophobic acid and hydrophilic neutrals. During chlorination, toxicities can increase with the increasing chlorine dose and contact time. To control the excessive toxicity formation, a relatively low chlorine dose and short contact time were required. Quenching chlorine residual with reductive reagents also effectively abated the formation of toxic compounds.
Toxicity Changes of Wastewater During Various Advanced Oxidation Processes Treatment: an Overview

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been widely applied for the advanced treatment of recalcitrant wastewater. However, the toxicity changes during AOPs are still unclear because in some cases the intermediate products could exhibit equivalent or even higher toxicity compared with the original pollutants. Therefore it is necessary to evaluate the toxicity evolution during AOPs. This review mainly focused on the toxicity changes of wastewater during various AOPs treatment, including Fenton/Fenton-like oxidation, ozonation/catalytic ozonation, persulfate radical-based oxidation, photocatalytic oxidation, ionizing radiation, electro-catalytic oxidation, ultrasound oxidation and wet oxidation. Firstly, the toxicity assessment methods were summarized, including acute toxicity (such as luminescent bacteria assay, fish assay, water flea assay and algae assay), genetic toxicity (Ames assay, SOS/umu assay, comet assay and micronucleus assay), estrogenic activity, immunity toxicity, and endocrine disrupting effect (such as yeast two-hybrid assay and fish endocrine disrupting assay), the applications of these methods in determining the toxicity changes of wastewater during AOPs treatment were summarized and analyzed in detail. Secondly, the toxicity prediction by computational simulation was introduced, mainly focusing on two common software, including TEST and ECOSAR. Thirdly, the strategies for eliminating the toxicity of wastewater after AOPs treatment were proposed. Finally, the concluding remarks and perspectives were presented for further study. This review will deepen to understand the toxicity evolution of wastewater during AOPs.

Abstract:Increasing water scarcity caused by population growth, climate change, pollution from natural and anthropogenic sources, etc. is likely to impact the occurrence of water-associated infectious diseases. Nowadays, access to clean and safe water is a growing concern worldwide. Therefore, disinfection of drinking water is a vital step in public treatment systems as it ensures the removal of various contaminants, including pathogenic microorganisms (protozoa, viruses, bacteria, and intestinal parasites) that give rise to waterborne diseases. Nevertheless, undesirable disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are formed during disinfection as a result of reactions between chemical disinfectants and natural organic matter (NOM), and/or anthropogenic contaminants, and/or bromide/iodide that are present in the raw water. The chemical complexity and heterogeneity of matters in the raw water makes the characterization and the mechanism of DBPs formation quite difficult and ambiguous regardless of the previous hundreds of studies on DBPs generation. As chlorination is still the most economic and most often used disinfection method, and beside chlorination, the application of chlorine dioxide is becoming more widespread, this paper investigates the possible DBPs generated using chlorine and chlorine dioxide with highlighting their adverse health effects. It overviews the reactions of those disinfectants with inorganic and organic compounds. It is important to note that in order to better understand the performance of disinfectants in water treatment, further investigations on the mechanisms of them with inorganic and organic compounds found in water are critically needed.

Abstract:The disinfection of microbial pathogens plays an important role in control of waterborne diseases and health issues. Recently, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are applied as powerful and effective technologies for wastewater purification and pathogen elimination. This review will showcase the recent endeavors in the fields and provide a comprehensive understanding of pathogens inactivation by diverse AOPs (i.e., Fenton processes, photocatalysis, electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs), sonolysis, ozonation, and persulfate-based AOPs). The mechanisms of AOPs-based disinfection include the destruction of cell envelope, enzymes, and intracellular substances via diverse reactive oxygen species (ROS). The primary ROS are HO•, SO4•−, O2•−, 1O2, and O3, which exhibit different oxidative capacities, and can react with cell envelope to destroy the permeability of cell membrane. Specifically, this review emphasizes on the performances and mechanisms of different AOPs systems in microbial inactivation as well as perspectives in practical applications of disinfection in terms of feasibility, operating cost, and sustainability.

Abstract:Water quality management will be a priority issue in the near future. Indeed, due to scarcity and/or contamination of the water, regulatory frameworks will be increasingly strict to reduce environmental impacts of wastewater and to allow water to be reused. Moreover, drinking water quality standards must be improved in order to account for the emerging pollutants that are being detected in tap water. These tasks can only be achieved if new improved and sustainable water treatment technologies are developed. Nanomaterials are improving the ongoing research on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This work reviews the most important AOPs, namely: persulfate, chlorine and NH2Cl based processes, UV/H2O2, Fenton processes, ozone, and heterogeneous photocatalytic processes. A critical review of the current coupling of nanomaterials to some of these AOPs is presented. Besides the active role of the nanomaterials in the degradation of water contaminants/pollutants in the AOPs, the relevance of their adsorbent/absorbent function in these processes is also discussed.

Abstract:Oxidative treatment of drinking water has been practiced for more than a century. UV-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs) have emerged as promising oxidative treatment technologies to eliminate recalcitrant chemicals and biological contaminants in drinking water. UV-AOPs inevitably alter the properties of natural organic matter (NOM) and affect the disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation in the post-disinfection. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review on the effects of UV-AOPs on the changes of NOM properties and the consequent impacts on DBP formation in the post-chlorination process. A tutorial review to the connotations of NOM properties (e.g., bulk properties, fractional constituents, and molecular structures) and the associated state-of-the-art analytical methods are firstly presented. The impacts of different radical-based AOPs on the changes of NOM properties together with the underlying NOM-radical reaction mechanisms are discussed. The impacts of alteration of NOM properties on DBP formation in the post-chlorination process are then reviewed. The current knowledge gaps and future research needs are finally presented, with emphases on the needs to strengthen the comparability of research data in literature, the accuracy in quantifying the reactive moieties of NOM, and the awareness of unknown DBPs in oxidative water treatment processes. The review and discussion improve the fundamental understanding of NOM-radical and NOM-chlorine chemistry. They also provide useful implications on the engineering design and operation of next-generation drinking water treatment plants.

Abstract:In recent years, electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) combined with ozonation have been widely utilized in water/wastewater treatment due to their excellent synergistic effect, high treatment efficiency, and low energy consumption. A comprehensive summary of these ozone-based EAOPs is still insufficient, though some reviews have covered these topics but either focused on a specific integrated process or provided synopses of EAOPs or ozone-based AOPs. This review presents an overview of the fundamentals of several ozone-based EAOPs, focusing on process optimization, electrode selection, and typical reactor designs. Additionally, the service life of electrodes and improvement strategies for the stability of ozone-based EAOPs that are ignored by previous reviews are discussed. Furthermore, four main application fields are summarized, including disinfection, emerging contaminants treatment, industrial wastewater treatment, and resource recovery. Finally, the summary and perspective on ozone-based EAOPs are proposed. This review provides an overall summary that would help to gain insight into the ozone-based EAOPs to improve their environmental applications.

Abstract:Many micropollutants are refractory to conventional wastewater/water treatment processes, causing attention to their potential adverse effects on aquatic environment and human health. The synchronous use of ultraviolet and chlorine (UV/chlorine) is an emerging advanced oxidation process drawing increasing interest, due to its relatively low cost and the effectiveness in degradation of refractory micropollutants via generating various reactive species, such as hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) and reactive chlorine species (RCS). This review documented the latest research on micropollutant degradation in the UV/chlorine process, and factors affecting the degradation efficiencies of target micropollutants, including UV fluence rate, chlorine dosage, pH, water matrix, and the reactivity of different radicals. Most recently, concerns have been raised over the formation of toxic transformation products and disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in the UV/chlorine process. The toxicity variation of micropollutants during the UV/chlorine treatment, and the multiple effects of the UV/chlorine process on the formation of DBPs were also reviewed. It was found that the toxicity variations of micropollutants in the UV/chlorine treatment were related to the compound-specific reactivity toward center dot OH and RCS. Further studies on the cost-effectiveness of the UV/chlorine process regarding micropollutant degradation without increasing the associated toxicity might be warranted.

Abstract:Natural organic matter (NOM), as a ubiquitous component in aqueous environments, has raised continuous scientific concerns due to its role as an organic precursor to disinfection by-products (DBPs) in the subsequent chlorination process. Selective oxidants, including ozone (O3), chlorine dioxide (ClO2), permanganate (Mn(VII)), and ferrate (Fe(VI)) are widely used in the preoxidation stage in drinking water treatment. The selective reactivity of those oxidants toward NOM is expected to alternate NOM properties and consequently DBP formation in postchlorination. Despite extensive studies on the interactions of NOM with selective oxidants, there is currently a lack of an overview of this area. To fill this gap, this study presents the current knowledge of the modification of NOM properties by selective oxidants and its impact on DBP formation in postchlorination. The NOM property changes in three aspects, including bulk property (e.g., total organic carbon, ultraviolet absorbance), fractional constituent (e.g., molecular size, hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity), and elemental composition (e.g., functional group) by the four selective oxidants (i.e., O3, ClO2, Mn(VII), and Fe(VI)) were discussed. Thereafter, the impacts of alteration of NOM properties by those selective oxidants on DBP formation in the subsequent chlorination were summarized, wherein the key influencing factors were discussed. Finally, the future perspectives in this area were forwarded, which highlighted the significance of process optimization, the attention to the less studied but more toxic DBPs, and the need for the identification of unknown DBPs. This review presented a state-of-the-art knowledge pool of the fate of NOM in oxidation and chlorination processes, promoted our understanding of the relationship between NOM properties and DBP formation, and identified further research needs in this area.

Abstract:High oxidation potential as well as other advantages over other tertiary wastewater treatments have led in recent years to a focus on the development of advanced oxidation processes based on sulfate radicals (SR-AOPs). These radicals can be generated from peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and persulfate (PS) through various activation methods such as catalytic, radiation or thermal activation. This review manuscript aims to provide a state-of-the-art overview of the different methods for PS and PMS activaton, as well as the different applications of this technology in the field of water and wastewater treatment. Although its most widespread application is the elimination of micropollutants, its use for the disinfection of wastewater is gaining increasing interest. In addition, the possibility of combining this technology with ultrafiltration membranes to improve the water quality and lifespan of the membranes has also been discussed. Finally, a brief economic analysis of this technology has been undertaken and the different attempts made to implement it at full-scale have been summarized. As a result, this review tries to be useful for all those people working in that area.

Abstract:Poly(A)-RNA enriched for type I procollagen sequences was isolated from normal human fibroblasts and used as template to synthesize double-stranded cDNA with avian myeloblastosis virus (AMV) reverse transcriptase. After the ends had been blunted with nuclease S1 and dGMP tails had been added with terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase, the double-stranded cDNA was annealed with pBR322 DNA that had previously been cleaved with EcoRI, blunted with AMV reverse transcriptase, and dCMP-tailed with terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase. The chimeric molecule was used to transform Escherichia coli strain HB101. Ninety-five recombinant clones were obtained and screened by dot hybridization analysis using 32P-labeled cDNA synthesized from the original poly(A)-RNA collagen-enriched population. Three positive clones were isolated and further characterized by blot hybridization techniques and by EcoRII digestion. One clone with an insert of 2.2 kilobases was shown to contain sequences encoding for the pro-alpha 2 chain of human type I procollagen. DNA sequence analysis of a 172-nucleotide fragment demonstrated that the cloned cDNA extends from amino acid position 450 of the alpha 2 chain to the middle of the COOH-terminal propeptide.

Abstract:Abstract Disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation during the treatment of raw Colorado River Water (CRW) using aqueous chlorine and ultraviolet (UV) light advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) was investigated. Here, CRW was combined with aqueous chlorine from two distinct sources (electrochemically-generated Mixed Oxidant Solution (MOS) and commercial sodium hypochlorite) and then exposed to ultraviolet C (UV-C) and ultraviolet A (UV-A) light. The impact of the treatment process on the structure of (NOM) in the CRW was examined, as well as the resulting production of various halogenated organic Disinfection By-Products (DBPs). Both AOP conditions tested resulted in destruction of chromophoric components of the NOM, while formation of total amounts of haloacetic acids and trihalomethanes was far below the US EPA regulated maximum contaminant level values for these contaminants, even though the UV and chlorine doses used in these studies were much higher than the typical doses used in an actual treatment process.

Abstract:Mixing oxidant of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) and chlorine (Cl2) often applied in water disinfection. Two secondary wastewater effluents at different ammonium-N levels (0.1 and 1.6 mg N L-1) were treated with the mixing oxidant (ClO2/Cl2) to evaluate the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and the associated cytotoxicity of treated wastewaters. The total chlorine concentrations of ClO2 and Cl2 were maintained at 10 mg L-1 as Cl2 with varied mixing ratios of ClO2 to Cl2. The formation of 37 halogenated DBPs, including nitrogenous, brominated and iodinated analogues, and 2 inorganic DBPs (chlorite and chlorate) was examined. The sum concentrations of the halogenated DBPs were reduced remarkably with decreasing Cl2 percentages, but each individual DBP group had distinct features. The regulated trihalomethanes reduced the most when ClO2 was present in chlorination, but decreasing Cl2 percentage from 70% to 30% was not quite effective to reduce the formation of iodinated trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids and haloacetontriles in low ammonium-N wastewater. The bromine and iodine substitution factors tend to increase with decreasing Cl2 percentages, indicating that destruction of DBP precursors by ClO2 favored bromine and iodine incorporation. Additionally, decreasing Cl2 percentages in the mixing oxidant (ClO2/Cl2) was often accompanied with lower chlorate formation but higher chlorite formation. The toxicity of treated wastewaters was evaluated through two approaches: the calculated cytotoxicity based on the concentrations of detected DBPs and the experimental cytotoxicity using the Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. The calculated cytotoxicity decreased with decreasing Cl2 percentages, with haloacetonitriles and haloacetaldehydes as predominate contributors. However, the experimental cytotoxicity tests showed that treatment of high ammonium-N wastewater with ClO2/Cl2 exhibited considerable higher (> 3 times) cytotoxicity potency than using single disinfectant.

Among the various technologies for the purification of water, ultraviolet photolysis of chlorine (UV/chlorine), an emerging advanced oxidation process (AOP), has multiple functions for the control of contaminants via the production of hydroxyl radicals (HO·) and reactive chlorine species (RCS), such as Cl·, ClO·, and Cl2·-.This Account centers around the radical chemistry of RCS and HO· in different water matrices and their roles and mechanisms in the abatement of contaminants. The concentrations of Cl·, ClO·, and Cl2·- are comparable to or higher than those of HO· (10-14 to 10-13 M). The reactivities of RCS are more selective than HO· with a broader range of second-order rate constants (k). The k values of Cl· toward most aromatics are higher or similar as compared to those of HO·, while those of Cl2·- and ClO· are less reactive but more selective toward aromatics containing electron-donating functional groups. Their major reaction mechanisms with Cl· are electron transfer and addition, while those with ClO· and Cl2·- primarily involve electron transfer. As for aliphatics, their reactivities with both HO· and RCS are much lower than those of aromatics. The reaction mechanisms for most of them with Cl· and Cl2·- are hydrogen abstraction, except for olefins, which are addition. In addition, RCS greatly contribute to the inactivation of microbial contaminants.Toward future application, the UV/chlorine process has both pros and cons. Compared with the traditional HO·-based AOP of UV/H2O2, UV/chlorine is more efficient and energy-saving for oxidation and disinfection, and its efficiency is less affected by water matrix components. However, the formation of toxic byproducts in UV/chlorine limits its application scenarios. In dissolved organic matter (DOM)-rich water, the formation of halogenated byproducts is enhanced in UV/chlorine. In the presence of ammonia, reactive nitrogen species (RNS) (e.g., ·NO and ·NO2) are involved, and highly toxic nitro(so) products such as nitro(so)-phenolics and N-nitrosodimethylamine are generated. For a niche application, the UV/chlorine process is recommended to be utilized in water with low levels of DOM and ammonia.Strategies should be developed to make full use of highly reactive species (RCS and HO·) for the abatement of target contaminants and to reduce the formation of toxic byproducts. For example, the UV/chlorine process can be used in tandem with other treatments to create multiple barriers for the production of safe water. In addition, halogen radicals are very important in ecosystems as well as other areas such as medical therapy and organic synthesis. UV/chlorine is the most efficient homogeneous system to generate halogen radicals, and thus it provides a perfect system to investigate the fates of halogen radicals for interdisciplinary research.

Abstract:Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is an alternative to chlorine in water treatment due to its more limited formation of chlorinated disinfection by-products (DBPs). However, on-site generation of ClO2 often involves the production of free chlorine, unreacted reagents or side-reaction products. The disinfectant is thus a mixture of ClO2 and chlorine. The focus of this study was on the role of the mixed ClO2/chlorine oxidant in the changes of the precursors of DBPs including trihalomethanes (THMs), chloral hydrate (CH), haloketones (HKs), haloacetonitriles (HANs), halonitromethanes (HNMs), chlorite and chlorate. The influence of bromide ions in water was also included. The ratio of ClO2 to chlorine was found to significantly affect the DBPs formed, depending on the water sample's properties. In the three waters tested, THMs formation was the least at a ClO2 to chlorine mass ratio of 1 : 0.5 or 1 : 0.8. Both decreases and increases in the formation of CH and HKs after ClO2/chlorine pre-oxidation were observed compared with using ClO2 alone. The formation of HANs and TCNM was the least at a ClO2 to chlorine mass ratio of 1 : 0.5 or 1 : 0.8, although in the GM water sample no trend was apparent. In the presence of bromide, more bromine incorporation was found after ClO2/chlorine pre-oxidation than when ClO2 alone was used or without pre-oxidation at all. With an increase in the chlorine fraction in the mixed oxidant, less chlorite was formed; chlorate formation was enhanced instead. Therefore, the ratio of ClO2 to chlorine needs to be monitored and adjusted to obtain the best control of DBP formation.

A novel solar-activated chlorine dioxide process for atrazine degradation in drinking water

Abstract:New technologies using advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) with low energy-input to address the presence of micro-contaminants and the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are required for drinking water safety. In this work, the activation of chlorine dioxide with solar (solar/ClO 2 process), a type of renewable and inexhaustible energy, was developed to degrade atrazine (ATZ) and control the formation of DBPs. Results revealed that solar/ClO 2 process was effective in degrading ATZ. Hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and chlorine radicals (Cl•) produced in solar/ClO 2 process were found to be the predominant agents for ATZ degradation with contribution rates of 55.9% and 44.1%, respectively, based on radical quenching tests and competition kinetics. Reaction pH did not affect the total amount of Cl• and •OH (i.e., [•OH] exp ) and [Cl•] exp ), while the conversion of Cl• to •OH was responsible for the depressed ATZ degradation efficiency with the increasing pH in solar/ClO 2 process. The presence of bicarbonate (HCO 3 − ), chloride (Cl − ) and humic acid (HA) retarded the ATZ degradation mainly due to they decreased [•OH] exp ) and [Cl•] exp . Using the UPLC-MS/MS analysis, six degradation intermediates of ATZ were tentatively identified, and the three-stage degradation pathway as well as the stepwise detoxification of ATZ were confirmed by the condensed Fukui function (CFF) calculation and ECOSAR prediction. Applying solar/ClO 2 as a pretreatment of HA-containing water, the formation of DBPs during post-chlorination was significantly reduced. However, the presence of ATZ during solar/ClO 2 pretreatment of HA significantly lowered the control efficiency of DBPs. The major degradation intermediate, i.e., deethyldeisopropylhydroxyatrazine (DEIHA), of ATZ could incorporate into HA and therefore providing more precursors for DBPs. The acute toxicity recorded by the behavior of zebrafish larvae revealed that using chloramine instead of chlorine downstream the solar/ClO 2 pretreatment of ATZ and HA could significantly reduce the acute toxicity by decreasing the formation of total DBPs. This study demonstrated the great potential of applying solar/ClO 2 process followed by chloramination to simultaneously degrade micro-contaminants and reduce DBPs formation as well as toxic risk in practical applications.
