Abstract:R134a will be phased out soon due to its high GWP. Replacing R134a with a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) and non- or slightly flammable fluids in the systems in stock should maintain the same level of system performance. This study focuses on the drop-in alternatives for R134a regarding a Mobile Air-Conditioning system. A simulation model coupled with a microchannel heat exchanger model is developed and validated for calculating the system Coefficient of Performance (COP) and capacity of the Mobile Air-Conditioning system. A comprehensive method is developed to evaluate the alternative candidates combining the performance simulation and the flammability estimated of mixtures. The evaluation includes the system performance, environmental impact, and flammability of alternative mixtures. 15 pairs of binary mixtures from six pure fluids (R134a, R1234yf, R1234ze(E), R32, R227ea, and R152a) with 99 compositions are evaluated as R134a drop-in replacements, and the results are discussed. There is no perfect mixture found that is nonflammable, has low GWP, and has higher system efficiency and capacity than R134a in this study. Using R152a as a drop-in replacement of R134a can increase the system efficiency and capacity, but R152a is flammable. By adding R134a or R227ea to R152a can reduce the flammability of the mixture. R152a/R134a, R152a/R1234yf, and R32/R152a have higher COP and capacity than R134a, but they are not safe or environmental friendly enough. The mixtures for replacing R134a as drop-in alternatives with low Global Warming Potential (less than 150 or 700), nonflammable or slightly flammable are listed and discussed. The method developed in this study can be extended to evaluate alternatives for replacing other working fluids in any thermal application that will be restricted.

Abstract:In this study, a modified refrigeration cycle (MRC) using refrigerant mixture R170/R290 was proposed for applications in low-temperature freezers. Different from traditional auto-cascade cycle (ARC), additional recuperator and expansion valve are set between condenser and separator to realize phase separation at an intermediate pressure. The MRC can significantly improve volumetric refrigeration capacity (q(ev)) and the coefficient of performance (COP) especially in low evaporating temperature condition. As evaporating temperature is set at -60 degrees C, using MRC system can acquire 18% and 35% COP and q(ev) improvements, and the compression ratio in MRC reduced 23% in comparison to ARC. In general, decreasing both separating temperature and quality of condenser outlet will benefit the performance of MRC. Besides, there exist an appropriate mixture quality at evaporator outlet to obtain the best COP and q(ev) under the given condition. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd and IIR. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The performance of auto-cascade refrigerator operating with two vapor-liquid separators and six binary refrigerants (R23/R134a, R23/R227ea, R23/R236fa, R170/R290, R170/R600a and R170/R600) was investigated with a new approach at the temperature level of 60 C. The results show that the pressure ratio, the composition of mixed refrigerants, the main stream ratio and the pressure level are the main factors affecting COP, which deserve a good balance in the optimization. The overall and local matching of heat capacity rates of the hot and cold refrigerants in the recuperators are both important for the improvement of COP. Among these binary refrigerants, the 0.55 mol fraction of R23 for R23/R236fa and R170 for R170/R600 are the most prospective compositions in the nonflammable refrigerants and natural refrigerants for medium suction pressure compressors, respectively. The new approach employed in this paper also suggests a promising application to the optimization of the performance with multi-component refrigerants and different temperature levels. Experimental study of ternary mixture R32/R125/R161 as alternative refrigerant to R407C

Abstract:A ternary non-azeotropic mixture of R32/R125/R161 as an alternative refrigerant to R407C was studied. The physical characteristics of R32/R125/R161 are similar to those of R407C. Its ozone depleting potential (ODP) is zero and its global warming potential (GWP) is smaller than that of R407C. Without any modification to the system components, experimental tests were performed on a vapor compression refrigeration set with a rotor compressor, which was originally designed for R407C. Experimental results indicate that power consumption, volumetric refrigerating capacity, refrigerating capacity and coefficient of performance (COP) increased, while pressure ratio and discharge temperature decreased with increasing evaporation temperature at different condensation temperature for R32/R125/R161 and R407C. At the same condensation temperature and evaporation temperature, volumetric refrigerating capacity, refrigerating capacity and COP of R25/R125/R161 were superior to those of R407C, and pressure ratio and power consumption of R25/R125/R161 were lower than those of R407C, and discharge temperature was slightly higher than that of R407C at the same working conditions. In addition, COP and volumetric refrigerating capacity increased with increasing subcooled temperature at the same condensation temperature. Therefore, the new refrigerant R32/R125/R161 can be considered as a promising alternative refrigerant to R407C.
Performance studies of low GWP refrigerants as environmental alternatives for R134a in low-temperature applications

Abstract:Climate change is an important environmental issue that is causing global temperatures to rise. The primary environmental targets are to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change. The refrigeration system is a major emitter of greenhouse gases because it uses refrigerants with a high global warming potential. Due to its excellent thermophysical properties, the R134a is the most commonly used refrigerant in refrigeration systems; however, its high GWP will need to be disposed of earlier. To achieve global environmental objectives, conventional refrigerants need to be replaced with environmentally friendly and energy-efficient refrigerants. In the present work, a mathematical simulation has been carried out to check the performance of low-GWP refrigerant mixtures as environmentally friendly alternatives for R134a in a low-temperature system. In this study, a 190-L domestic refrigerator has been considered a low-temperature system. This simulation was performed using the MATLAB software, and the REFPROP database was used to obtain thermophysical properties of the refrigerants. The results showed that the COP of HFO mixtures decreased by 4-20% compared to R134a. The exergy efficiency of the R1234ze/R134a mixture improves by 4 to 16% as compared to the other mixtures and its performance is very similar to the R134a. Due to the environmentally friendly properties and flammability aspects, R1234ze/R134a (90/10) could be a good substitute for R134a in lower temperature applications and to satisfy the Montreal and Kyoto Protocol expectations.

Abstract:Due to the impact of global warming and climate change, more and more people are starting to have a clearer understanding and vigilance about greenhouse gases. To prevent further deterioration of the global environment, this study examines the coefficients of performance of 21 currently available refrigerants with very low global-warming potential and zero ozone-depleting potential under evaporation temperatures of 10, −20, −40, and −60 °C and condensation temperatures of 30, 40, and 50 °C, respectively. It is found that the use of pure refrigerant in a two-stage refrigeration system to replace the single-stage refrigeration system, in addition to mixing it into an appropriate mixture, can effectively improve the performance coefficient of the refrigeration system. For single-stage vapor compression refrigeration systems, R1234ze(Z), R601, and R1233zd(E) have the best refrigeration performances among the environmentally friendly refrigerants studied, while R441A performs the worst for Teva = 10 °C and −20 °C. Moreover, RE170 has the highest COP of the refrigeration system for Teva = −40 °C and −60 °C. However, R1234yf performs worse in COP when the evaporation temperature is lower, and it ranks last for Teva = −60 °C. When a double-stage vapor compression refrigeration system is employed instead, the percentage increase in the COP of the system using R1234yf becomes the largest for Teva = −40 °C and −60 °C. However, the growth rate of R717 ranks last for Teva = −60 °C. For an R717/R1234yf mixture at an optimum mass fraction of 0.25, the COP of the refrigeration system can be increased up to 25.8% despite an increase of 15.2% in operating pressure compared to R1234yf. The discharge temperature may rise; however, there will be no overheating problem for the compressor.

Abstract:This paper presents a modified vapor–compression refrigeration cycle (MVRC) for applications in domestic refrigerator/freezers using zeotropic mixture R290/R600a. In the MVRC cycle, an ejector and a phase separator are added based on a traditional vapor–compression refrigeration cycle (TVRC) to improve the cycle performance. The coefficient of performance COP, volumetric cooling capacity, exergy loss and exergy efficiency are theoretically investigated for the MVRC cycle and compared with the TVRC cycle. The results show that the MVRC cycle outperforms the TVRC cycle under all given operating conditions and the advantage is more obvious at lower evaporating temperature, lower subcooling temperature and higher condensing temperature. Specifically, the COP and volumetric cooling capacity can be improved maximally by 16.71% and 34.97%, respectively. The exergy efficiency can be raised maximally by 6.71% and the total exergy loss can be reduced maximally by 24.47%. The further simulation results indicate that there exists an optimal mixture composition for the MVRC cycle that could obtain the maximum COP.

Abstract:In this study, a finite volume, steady-state evaporator model that includes rectangular minichannel and microchannel tubes with louvered fins was developed and validated. The model was then used to compare the thermal-hydraulic performance of experimental ternary refrigerant mixtures to more traditional refrigerants — namely, R-125/R-143a/R-161 (45%/40%/15%) versus R-404a and R-125/R-32/R-161 (34%/15%/51%) versus R-22. R-125/R-143a/R-161 (45%/40%/15%) exhibited significantly higher heat transfer per unit area than R-404a with only a small accompanying increase in the refrigerant-side pressure drop for the cases studied. Similarly, R-125/R-32/R-161 (34%/15%/51%) exhibited significantly higher heat transfer per unit area than R-22 with a minimal difference in refrigerant-side pressure drop. Both refrigerant mixtures also possess lower global warming potentials (GWPs). Based on these criteria (i.e. increased thermal performance and reduced GWPs), both mixtures would serve as suitable replacements for R-404a and R-22 in applications where the slight flammability of these blends was not a concern.

Abstract:R32 has superior environmental performance,such as ODP is zero,GWP is less than that of R410A,etc.It has been gradually recognized to have potential to substitute R410A.Carries out the experimental study on the cycle performances of R410A and R32.The results show that the pressure ratios are almost the same,the compressor power consumption of R32 are slightly higher than that of R410A,the refrigerating capacity is slightly superior to that of R410A and their COP are very close,but the discharge temperature of R32 is higher than that of R410A under different working conditions.In a word,R32 has good thermophysical properties and friendly environmental performance,which make it as a potential alternative refrigerant to R410A.
Future refrigerants with low global warming potential for residential air conditioning system: a thermodynamic analysis and MCDM tool optimization

Abstract:Increasing CO2 emission due to the practicing of high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant like R22 in split air conditioning (AC) units needs the best substitute to match with environment and safety protocols along with good energy efficiency. In this study, 14 alternative refrigerants have been chosen to replace R22 in a 1.5 TR capacity of split AC from the existing studies. The performance of each refrigerant has been analysed thermodynamically and compared their results with R22 by accounting for discharge temperature, power consumption, coefficient of performance (COP), total equivalent warming impact (TEWI) index, and life-time cost. Overall from this theoretical analysis, it was observed that the best refrigerant for each considered measure is not unique; for example, R290 was best in terms of refrigerant charge and discharge pressure, while R444B was chosen to be superior in terms of COP, TEWI, and life-time cost. Therefore, a multi-criteria decision-making methodology tool-based optimization has been carried out for selecting a single superior refrigerant for the future by considering thermal properties, COP, TEWI, and life-time cost. Results of the evaluation based on the distance from average solution envisage R290 and R1123 as superior and worst choices to replace R22.

Abstract:The optimization of the performance of a single-stage Linde-Hampson refrigerator (LHR) operating with six different binary refrigerants (R23/R134a, R23/R227ea, R23/R236ea, R170/R290, R170/R600a and R170/R600) with ozone depletion potentials (ODPs) of zero was conducted using a new approach at the temperature level of −60 °C. Among these binary refrigerants, the 0.55 and the 0.6 mole fractions of R23 for R23/R236ea are the most prospective nonflammable ones for the medium and low suction pressure compressors, respectively. For these two kinds of compressors, the 0.6 and the 0.65 mole fractions of R170 for R170/R600, respectively, are the most prospective binary refrigerants with low global warming potentials (GWPs). The results of optimization of pressure levels indicate that the optimum low pressure value for coefficients of performance (COP) is achieved when the minimum temperature differences occur at both the hot and the cold ends of the recuperator at a specified composition and pressure ratio. Two useful new parameters, the entropy production per unit heat recuperated and the ratio of heat recuperating capacity to the power consumption of the compression, were introduced to analyze the exergy loss ratio in the recuperator. The new approach employed in this paper also suggests a promising application even to the optimization of the performance with multi-component refrigerants.
Theoretical assessment of new low global warming potential refrigerant mixtures as eco-friendly alternatives in domestic refrigeration systems

Abstract:Refrigerants of low global warming potentials (GWPs) of ≤ 150 are required by regulations as working fluids in domestic refrigeration systems. Therefore, this study theoretically investigated the performance of five new refrigerant mixtures (R440A, R441A, R444A, R445A and R451A) with zero ODP and GWPs of less than 150. The results showed that all the investigated refrigerants exhibited very low pressure ratios and discharge temperatures in comparison with R134a with average discharge temperatures of R451A and R440A lower by 8 and 7% respectively, than that of R134a. R451A and R440A have similar vapour specific volume and pressure-temperature characteristics with those of R134a which confirmed that they could be used as replacement for R134a. R440A and R451A have advantages of better COPs and volumetric cooling capacity (VCC) in comparison with R134a. Their average COPs are higher by 14 and 5% respectively, than that of R134a. The specific power consumptions (SPCs) of R441A and R445A are significantly higher by average of 57 and 44% respectively; while those of R440A and R451A are lower by average of 8 and 4% respectively, in comparison with R134a. In general, in terms of all the performance parameters considered, R441A and R445A consistently performed poorly, while R440A and R451A achieved better performance than R134a in all aspects. Beside the flammability of these two refrigerants, in which their use require following the established rules and regulations for the safety precautions, they can serve as long term eco-friendly substitute refrigerants for R134a in domestic refrigerators.
Cycle Performance Studies on a New HFC-161/125/143a Mixture As an Alternative Refrigerant to R404A

Abstract:In this paper, a new ternary non-azeotropic mixture of HFC-161/125/143a (0.15/0.45/0.40 in mass fraction), as a promising mixed refrigerant to R404A, is presented. The ozone depletion potential (ODP) of the new refrigerant is zero and its basic thermodynamic properties are similar to those of R404A, but its global warming potential (GWP) is much smaller than those of R507A and R404A. Meanwhile, theoretical calculations show that, under the working condition I (the average evaporation temperature: −23 °C, the average condensing temperature: 43 °C, the superheat temperature: 28 °C, the subcooling temperature: 5 °C), the volumetric refrigerating effect and specific refrigerating effect of the new mixture are 2.33% and 15.48% higher, respectively, than those of R404A. The coefficient of performance (COP) of the new mixture is 5.19% higher than that of R404A and the pressure ratio of the new mixture is 0.82% lower than that of R404A. Equally, under the working condition II (the average evaporation temperature: −40 °C, the average condensing temperature: 35 °C, the superheating temperature: 30 °C, the subcooling temperature: 5 °C), the volumetric refrigerating effect and specific refrigerating effect of the new mixture are 2.24% and 20.58% higher, respectively, than those of R404A. The COP of the new mixture is 4.60% higher than that of R404A and the pressure ratio of the new mixture is similar to that of R404A. The performances of the new mixture and R404A are compared in a vapor compressor refrigeration apparatus originally designed for R404A under several working conditions (condensing temperatures: 35–45 °C, evaporation temperatures: −40–−20 °C). Experimental results show that the new mixture can obtain a higher COP, by 6.3% to 12.1%, and a lower pressure ratio, by 1.8% to 6.6%, compared to R404A; although the discharge temperature of the new mixture is slightly higher than that of R404A. The advantages of the new mixture will be further verified in the actual system.

Abstract:The theoretical simulation and thermodynamic analyses of the Linde-Hampson refrigeration system using multiple eco-friendly zeotropic refrigerants are conducted to compare the optimal COP, volumetric refrigerating capacity and irreversibility distribution at the cold space temperature of-45 degrees C to-25 degrees C. The genetic algorithm is employed on the global optimization of Linde-Hampson refrigeration system to find out the optimal operating pressures and proportions of mixed refrigerants. By comparison, the most potential binary and ternary re-frigerants are selected as R744/R1234ze(Z) and R744/R1234ze(E)/R1234ze(Z), respectively. The temperature glide of ternary refrigerant is mainly regulated by the proportions of the middle-boiling-point and high-boiling -point components. The temperature glide of zeotropic refrigerants should well match the temperature span between heat reservoirs, since the matching degree plays an essential role in system performance, and it can be regarded as an important basis for the selection of mixed refrigerants. The results of comparison with the R744 two-stage compression transcritical refrigeration system and the cascade refrigeration system using R744 and R1234yf show that the Linde-Hampson system using suitable mixed refrigerants can obtain the greatest COP and can be considered as a supplement and alternative. The research results will provide a reference to the appli-cations of the Linde-Hampson refrigeration system using eco-friendly zeotropic refrigerants for freezing process in considerations of environmental protection, safety, and efficiency.

Abstract:The performance of an auto-cascade refrigerator with a liquid-gas separator using six pairs of binary refrigerants with ozone depletion potential(ODP) of zero was optimized by a new approach at the temperature level of-60℃.The optimization results show that the refrigerant composition(the component and mole fraction) and operation pressure condition(the pressure level and pressure ratio) are the main parameters which determine the COP of the cycle.The 0.55 and 0.6 mole fractions of R23 for R23/R236ea are the most prospective nonflammable refrigerant among the R23/R134a, R23/R227ea,R23/R236ea at pressure ratios of 7 and 10,respectively.The 0.65 and 0.7 mole fractions of R170 for R170/R600 are the most prospective natural binary refrigerant among the R170/R290, R170/R600a and R170/R600 at pressure ratios of 7 and 10,respectively.
Thermodynamic Investigation on Low GWP Drop‐in Alternatives to HFC‐245fa in Ejector Refrigeration Cycle for Air Condition Application

Abstract:The ejector refrigeration cycle (ERC) with HFC-245fa can achieve high efficiency and reliability for air conditioning applications. However, because of its high global warming potential (GWP), HFC-245fa needed to be phased out according to recent relative regulations. In this study, four promising alternatives to HFC-245fa were investigated and evaluated, including HC-600, HCFO-1233zd(E), HFO-1336mzz(Z), and HCFO-1224 yd(Z). Besides their low GWP, these alternatives also have similar vapor pressure curves to HFC-245fa, which represents a possibility for refrigerant drop-in replacement in ERC. Thermodynamic real gas modeling of the ERC was adopted in this study for more accurate results, and a critical performance evaluation and comparison with those candidates in ERC were carried out. The results indicate that HCFO-1233zd(E) and HCFO-1224 yd(Z) are outstanding candidates for ERC according to the higher coefficient of performance, entrainment ratio, exergy efficiency, and lower pump power consumption, and the COP relative differences of these two refrigerants would reach 5.5% and 4.6%. HFO-1336mzz(Z) consumes 33% less power at the pump than HFC-245fa under the same conditions and refrigeration capacity. Minimal pump power consumption is its advantage. Although HC-600 is prominent, with the largest coefficient of performance and entrainment ratio, its flammability is not conducive to its popularization. Machine learning is available to predict the performance of ejectors employing different refrigerants. This paper helps to properly select refrigerants for ERC and to pre-evaluate the refrigerants' application under different working conditions.

Abstract:The Kyoto Protocol has stipulated array of national policies to combat the climate change. To tackle the global warming, governments embraced Paris Agreement and Kigali Amendment which deal with the reduction of greenhouse gas emission. For example, the European F-gas regulation and the Japan METI now enforce refrigerants below 150 GWP for automobile industry and below 750 GWP for the residential air-conditioning applications. To invent a perfect refrigerant that meets performance requirement, environmental requirements, and safety standards is considered extremely difficult. On the other hand, some existing refrigerants exhibit excellent performance with safe operation but record high-GWP while refrigerants such as R1234yf and R744 possess almost 0 GWP. Thus, these refrigerant blends might serve as urgent solutions with minimum performance compromise. This paper evaluates the performance of binary and ternary blends using several promising refrigerants. Exploiting the excellent performance of R32 as the base refrigerant, R1123, R1234yf, R1234ze(E), and R744 are utilized in the blends. The performance indicators employed here are (i) GWP, (ii) temperature glide, (iii) volumetric capacity, and (iv) coefficient of performance. The advantages to reduce the irreversible heat loss by glide matching and energy saving potential for the blends are also discussed. Results showed that some refrigerant blends considering GWP 200 and 300 could successfully replace the widely used R410A in a residential air conditioner. Abstract:This study presents a comparative energy, exergy, and life cycle climate performance (LCCP) analysis of various refrigerants in a cascade refrigeration system (CRS). The refrigerants analyzed in the low-temperature cycle (LTC) include R-23, R-116, R-41, R-170, R-1150, and R-1132a whereas high-temperature cycle (HTC) utilizes R-404A, R-455A, R-454C, R-459B, R-161, R-290, R-1270, and R-1234yf. For the first time for CRS, LCCP analysis is conducted and fourth generation low GWP and less flammable prospective refrigerants R-1132a, R-455A, R-454C, R-459B are analyzed. The study aims to find a refrigerant pair that outperforms R-23/R-404A in terms of thermodynamic efficiency while also considering environmental impact and safety considerations. Among the 48 refrigerant groups analyzed, the study reveals that R-170/R-161 and R-41/R-161 demonstrate superior performance in terms of thermodynamic efficiency and environmental impact assessment whereas the largest exergy destruction components are HTC/LTC compressors. However, if flammability is a major concern, the recommended refrigerant pair is R-1132a/R-1234yf, as it is a suitable alternative in terms of safety considerations while still maintaining favorable thermodynamic and environmental performance.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new approach to the performance optimization of an auto-cascade refrigerator (ACR) operating with a rectifying column and six types of binary refrigerants (R23/R134a, R23/R227ea, R23/R236fa, R170/R290, R170/R600a, and R170/R600) at a temperature level of −60 °C. Half of the six binary refrigerants are nonflammable, of which the 0.5 and the 0.6 mole fractions of R23 for the R23/R236fa possess the most prospective composition for the medium and low suction pressure compressors, respectively. The remaining three binary refrigerants are flammable but with low global warming potentials, of which the 0.6 mole fraction of R170 for the R170/R600 is the most prospective one. The results show that the overall matching as well as local matching of heat capacity rates of hot and cold refrigerants in the recuperators are important for the improvement of coefficient of performance of the cycle, which can be adjusted through the simultaneous optimization of the pressure level and composition. The new approach proposed also offers a wider range of applications to the optimization in performance of the cycle using multi-component refrigerants.

Abstract:The energy and exergy of low-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Refrigerants with a modest GWP 100 of ≤ 150 can be sufficient for bringing down emissions which were concerned for the automotive air-conditioning system. Three types of low-GWP refrigerants, R152a, R1234yf, and R1234ze(E), were examined with particular reference to the current high-GWP of R134a. The effect of different evaporating and condensing temperatures in addition to compressor speed was considered. The purpose was to bring a clear view of the performance characteristics of possible environment friendly alternatives of R134a. The analysis was carried out with compressor power, cooling capacity, coefficient of performance, exergy destruction, and exergy efficiency. It was noted that the total exergy destruction of R1234yf was reduced by 15% compared to that of R134a. The refrigerant R1234ze(E) has the highest energetic and exergetic performance compared with the other investigated refrigerants.
